His teaching style is always on high energy. He speaks loudly and teaches fast, which keeps you awake, but can be confusing. His teaching style is like a freight train.
Highly Compentent. Laumakis knows what he's talking about. He moves a little fast, but his lectures are usually interesting. His grading policies are also pretty fair, I liked him.
Entusiastic teacher to say the least, always makes class a high energy experience. One negative- Notes are sloppy and hard to follow when it comes time to study. Great guy, very helpful, always willing to make sure you understand.
you have to understand what is going on to do well, this can be done by only paying attention in lecture and participating in discussion, he loves discussion. really cool guy
He is awful!!! Do not take him - one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He is very cocky and thinks he is always right! He is an awful terrible person!
he is a horrible teacher. He is a hard grader, expects you all to be phil majors and get it perfectly right. notes are terrible, tests are hard. he is very enthusiastic but not a good teacher. thinks too highly of himself.
cool dude
great energy
makes things interesting, not boring, which is needed for philosophy
Really funny guy. His lectures are very interesting and funny (even though I am not big on studying philosophy). Tests are not that hard, as long as you listen in class. Very easy to get a 'B' on papersbut very hard to get an 'A'. Overall, awesome prof and class. I took him for both sections.
He's a great teacher, the people who disliked him just misunderstood him completly.
Awesome! Best prof! Phil is naturally confusing but Steve is great at teaching and sometimes can be confusing but ALWAYS welcome for questions! So just ask!!
Steve is a good teacher. I have little interest in Philosophy and even though some of the concepts bug me, he makes sure that the info is clarified. Although he obviously thinks Phil is the best thing on earth, he uses humor and energy to get the non-lovers interested, too.
Very funny guy. He makes lectures interesting and he uses humor to explain concepts, which makes understanding the material easier. Tough grader, but you can hand in as many rough drafts of a paper you want until you get it right. He's very willing to help and answer questions in or out of class.
Dr. Laumakis makes class super entertaining with his energetic teaching style. Notes on board are sloppy but very helpful with papers (2 assigned per semester). Can get participation points through discussion boards on BlackBoard. I highly recommend him, he captivated my interest every class period!
steve is the man. he's really passionate about teaching (more than many profs can say). funny. finds a way to convey complex concepts in an understandable way without dumbing them down. he's a guy i'd gladly sit and drink a beer with. beer test ranking... why isn't that a field on here?

Dr. Steve is preaches from a soapbox of availability and understanding however my actual experience in the class was nowhere near my expectations. He's a flake and he lives pretty high in his ivory tower - I wouldn't take another class with him given the choice.
Dr L Rules. Thats all I have to say.
Steve makes Philosophy a ton of fun. It could be really boring stuff, but his classes are interesting, and the energy he brings to the material makes the subject matter a lot more understandable. He loves the subject, and that is evident in each class.
Steve is a really fun guy. He knows his stuff. However, he really let me down at the end of the semester. He gave a badly written test and didn't curve it-- which brought the entire class' GPA down. He blew of the last day of class and cut down his office hours for finals week. Not cool. Knows his stuff... but very moody. He really let us dow
Steve is a great guy and his class is never boring. He is a hard grader on papers, but the tests aren't that bad as long as you study. Participate alot in class and take notes.
Steve is very laid back, but he is tough when it comes to grading. He is very nice and will help you if you need it, and excuses will not work with him. Make sure you do the reading or it will bite you in the butt. Overall he was a very good prof and I would take his class again if I had the choice.
Extremely hard grading in general but as long as you study and go to class, the test will be easy. I can't stress enough that going to class will make this class so much easier. Made every class a joy to listen to, never got bored or dozed off.
There's no doubt that he brings a truck load of enthusiasm to class everyday. He's hilarious. I did find some of his lectures a bit confusing, he goes off on these tangents and my notes end up being really confusing. Additionally, he doesn't answer questions very clearly...I always ended up more confused. Great person...ok professor
Steve is great! I'm sad he is getting a bad rap on here. He loves this stuff, and his books. Lots of reading, BUT if you listen and have skill at taking notes, you'll do fine. I haven't read, and I'm getting a B+, and all thats left is the final. Class discussion is wide open, and he is willing to explain any cloudy points. Lots of fun too.
i took his 100 person class and it was amazing. He rarely took attendance, but everyone still came to class because he was so good. He is hilarious and also relates his humor to the material, making it a lot easier to remember. Took easy weekly 10 pt T/F quizzes and had 4 tests total. No midterm. Take this class he will blow your mind!
Steve is an outstanding teacher. The subject matter in Philosophy 115 can be difficult and at times boring but Steve keeps class interesting and easy to participate in. Take this class if you want to learn a lot of information in a laid back style that is easy to take in information. Best professor I have had at St Thomas yet.
I took the large lecture from him (about 100 people) and it was one of the best classes I've ever been in. He's an amazing professor and I actually looked forward to class! 4 Multiple Choice tests and 10point quizzes each Friday. I never read any of the books or articles and still got an A- because his lectures are so good.
Laumakis is a very strict grader when it comes to papers. WATCH OUT for every small detail because he's smart...and he will find your mistakes. He grades papers harder than my english teachers do. But his class is semi interesting and he is always full of energy, and has a great sense of humor... its just a tough course
I took the 100 person class. It is definitely a change from the typical UST class. It's tough to ask questions but he'll answer them if you ask. There's 4 tests that are each 20% of your grade. They're MC and T/F. Not too difficult but not an easy class. Great guy tho, lots of personality.
Laumakis is an incredible professor -- full of energy, very clear/concise, and great lectures. I think it's funny that a few reviews on here have suggested that he's "cocky" and "high in his ivory tower." This is not the case at all; but his Jersey accent can be somewhat intimidating at times. To be straightforward, Steven makes philosophy fun.
I took the 100-person class with Steve, he's an easy-going guy with a lot of personality. I thought philosophy was going to be boring, but he definitely made it worth going to!
Steve is a great professor! He's so funny and easy to listen to. He's a tough grader but always willing to help you out if you ask. His Hawaiian shirts are classic as well, especially in the middle of winter.
Makes class interesting. Highly recommend him for your intro PHIL class.
Laumakis is a great professor who makes philosophy interesting for all students. Makes the material very easy to understand and encourages students to see him during office hours. Test are hard if you don't study much.
Dr. Lamaukis is an amazing professor. He made philosophy fun and very easy to learn. He's great at presenting the material in a way that everyone will understand. My class had 100 students which was intimidating at first, but it is one of my favorite classes yet. Must take him before you leave! Also a bonus - he's hilarious!
If you have the chance to take a class with Steve, do it! He is so willing to help, the material is a little hard to grasp, but he will help you out for sure. He is incredibly intelligent, and borderline hilarious. I'm doing okay in the class grade wise, but it is my favorite class because this professor is the best I have ever experienced.
GREAT TEACHER! He made me want to come to class and got me so interested in philosophy. It has been the only class in my entire school career that made me think in such a new way. He is hilarious and very willing to help. He makes learning confusing things as simple as possible and kept me entertained. I didn't miss a single class!
There once was a man who could teach...my grade was easy to reach...the prof was fun....i'm sad that it's all done...I really think Steve is a Peach.
Dr. Laumakis is a great prof! I am taking the ethics in Hawai'i course right now and it is just a blast. Laumakis brings an energy and passion to his lectures that no other prof has matched yet! He is funny and it is impossible to not enjoy his lectures. He is extremely helpful and always willing to help.I definitely recommend everyone take him!
Laumakis is funny and loves philosophy! He is extremely well informed and always answered students' questions clearly and accurately. He really knows his stuff and does not care what his students think of him because he knows how good at teaching he is (been doing it for a while). Exams can be tough but keep up with reading and attend ALL lectures.
Awesome Prof! Very nice and makes a class I thought was going to be very boring, interesting. Quiz every friday but they are very easy and test every three weeks. All multiple choice no essays and no papers. Hes the man!
Not unexpectant for a Catholic school, but PHilosophy is not Philosophy but Theological Philosophy. You will be deeply disappointed if you are not religious and would love more meaninful philisophy. He is a a good guy actually, but horrible at understanding what Philosophy really is. =( I was deeply dissapointed since Im an naturalist!
I don't know what the person was talking about when they said it's religious philosophy. I'm agnostic leaning towards atheism and Laumakis is my favorite prof ever. Seriously. How many different ways are there to say awesome? Not enough.
Great prof. Very nice guy, easy to get along with. Knows what he is talking about. Talk baseball with him and he will love it. BTW: Phillies suck! I wouldn't tell him that though.
tests are decently hard. no papers. pretty funny guy, very entertaining
Speaks very fast but uses good analogies. Boring information to learn. Hard tests. Quizzes every Monday, lowest two dropped. If you miss class your SOL, get notes from a friend. If you miss a test day you will have a completely different test all essay, it will kick your butt! overall makes class fun but hard material!
Great guy. I took the lecture class MWF and I enjoyed coming to class. He's a funny guy and class goes by fast. 10 pt quizzes every monday, 4 tests (bubble sheet) including the final that's not cumulative. No papers, very willing to explain more if you need help. Take him!!
Awesome professor! He is very engaging, and makes the lectures really interesting! He's an awesome dude, and he has a huge personality that will keep anyone awake (because he talks really loud). It's all great fun though, such an awesome guy.
Laumakis is the best!! I took him at 800am, and he made the class interesting and entertaining. He's super funny! If you pay attention in class, you don't need to do the readings!
he is a raly interesting teacher and very funny. he will you keep you alert in class how ever he talk really fast and expects that everyone understands what it going on.. tests are very hard study a lot and take alot of notes
Great guy class is pretty easy. 4 tests all multiple choice. dont really have to read most of its on sparknotes. gives helpful notes. couple other small assignments
Laumakis could do a much better job of making Phil 115 relevant to the vast majority of students taking the course solely to fulfill the graduation requirement. He is incredibly knowledgable and passionate, but having taken the course I don't understand why it was required because he didn't emphasize its relevance.
Laumakis is the best. I would take all the PHIL classes from him. He is a great teacher and his course is easy. Insanely small amount of work. No midterm or final. No papers. You don't have to read, as he covers all important parts of the readings in class.
Laumakis is awesome. He is hilarious and keeps the class interesting. The class was easy, and you don't have to do any of the readings because he covers them in full detail in class. Tests/quizzes were pretty easy too. If you show up and pay attention, you will do very well in his class. I definitely recommend taking his class!
TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. He is an amazing professor who knows exactly what he's talking about and his passion makes you excited to learn....and you do learn a ton! I got a B+ in the class but it was my fault for not being prepared on the last two tests. You have to study quite a bit but the material is super interesting anyway.
Not only were his lectures extremely clear, easy to follow, and funny, he gave opportunity for extra credit and his tests and quizzes were all scantron, which made them pretty easy for philosophy. As a PHIL major, I'd recommend someone who spends more time on skills (like Coulter) but for just getting your core, he's awesome.
Great professor.
Laumakis is great. I really enjoyed having him as a professor, he makes class very interesting. He knows what he is teaching and that's what makes it great. He also knows how to make philosophy somewhat fun with his personality. Really cool. His tests are for the most part easy, but you HAVE to have his notes from class to study from.
Great class, great professor. He wants you to buy like 10 little books, you don't have to. He covers what you need to know from them. His tests aren't hard if you take good notes and are all scantron. Don't skip class, if you do just make sure you get the notes from someone. He is a really funny guy and makes the class interesting
This was one of my favorite classes so far! Dr Laumakis is a wonderful teacher but his class is also really really really easy. No papers and tests were all true false or multiple choice. Make sure to show up for lecture though because readings are tough.
Dr. L is amazing, very engaged and knows his stuff. Straightforward approach, and doesn't waste your time. I would absolutely recommend to anyone at UST.
Dr. Laumakis is all over the board, literally. His notes on the board are sometimes not clear and hard to interpret. However, he is very engaged and you can tell he loves his job. While philosophy is not fun, Dr. Laumakis somehow managed to keep me awake.
Best Professor ever. Definitely of my favorites at UST. If you can, take Laumakis (la-may-kiss)! I wasn't excited about philosophy, but he was so passionate and hilarious that I loved coming to class. Do the readings, study for the quizzes, go to class, and you'll be good to go.
Dr. Laumakis can be a massive jerk sometimes but I generally found him amusing. He knows his stuff and has a passion for going through philosophy. However, he goes quick and his notes suck (he tells everyone that at the beginning) so make sure to do the readings ahead of time so you can ask lots of questions. I would have done better if I did so.
Laumakis manages to make lectures somewhat interesting, but be prepared. He goes extremely fast, and sometimes his notes can be hard to follow. But if you're ever confused you can just ask questions he's very open to it. Four tests, final is just the last test so nothing is cummulative. You need to study for them but he doesn't try to trick you
Steve is flat out amazing. He made philosophy a class I had no desire to take a class that I looked forward to going to. His lectures are always filled with jokes and funny examples and he takes great pride in making sure us as students understand the content. Also, very easy class, you will get at least a B! Take him!!
Laumakis is my favorite professor at UST. The people that say he's a jerk or that he's mean need to grow up a little bit. He doesn't baby you. His board notes have went from bad to really good, and he's incredibly helpful when you ask questions. He's difficult but fair and gives you every opportunity to do well.
Dr. Laumakis is hilarious, and he loves Philosophy. I would definitely recommend taking him for Phil 115. He takes really good board notes and keeps his lectures entertaining most of the time. He kind of assigns a lot of reading material but if you don't read it all you'll still be fine because he goes over it all during class the next day
Dr. Laumakis is a great professor. He's got some east coast humor, and it definitely shows. He wears Hawaiian shirts every single day for class which is awesome. He really enjoys what he does. If you show up listen and do your work he isn't tough. Weekly quizzes that are actually helpful for exams. Would take a class from him anytime.
DO NOT BUY THE BOOKS FOR THIS CLASS. I did not open a book the whole semester. It is a very easy class if you pay attention and can remember facts. On most tests I could cross examine the answers and figure them out. Funny guy, always wears Hawaiian shirts.
Dr. Laumakis is awesome! He is from the east coast, so he doesn't beat around the bush, he gives it to you straight. I really enjoyed him and his class. Lots of reading but kind and funny! He is more than willing to hep you and explain things in depth one on one. I would really recommend him! 4 tests, extra credit, weekly quizzes, and logic!
An overall great prof. If you pay attention, go to class, and study a little before a test you will be able to get a good grade. He is a really nice guy too. You do not need to read/buy any of the materia because he goes over what you need to know for the test in class. Take him.
Great professor and he is funny. Not always the clearest on instruction but, just ask and he will clarify anything for you. Quite a bit to read and you really need to pick up on the details within the reading. He does give a little bit of extra credit. Although attendance is not mandatory you should plan on being at all classes.
Not particularly interesting, but an easy A. I never once opened a textbook for this class and ended up with a 100 on the final. Show up to class and look at the powerpoint and quiz questions before the exams to study.
He's from Philly and can be rough around the edges, but I thought that made the lectures more interesting and fun. He's really funny and wears a different style/color/themed bowling shirt everyday. The HW is easy and the tests are moderately difficult. If you pay attention and take notes on class you'll do well.
He was funny, energetic, and really kept me engaged at every lecture. Taking him again for my 200 level class.
I really liked that this prof knew just about everyone took the class out of necessity and not desire. My problem with him was with the tests. He sets it up to make it easy, but the true/false is such a big portion of test, and they are so so particular that it will trick you often when you could have probably been better off with fill in the blank
This professor is very lively and real for an 8 am class and provides great examples of what he is trying to explain. There are weekly quizzes on Monday's that can be a pain, but to be fair I don't do the reading. If you are someone that likes to just cram last minute take the class in the lecture hall, he won't call on you and you can do homework.
Although this class was very lecture and reading heavy, I really loved this professor! He was extremely funny and made 8am philosophy not so bad! The material was hard but if you listened in class he did a very good job of explaining everything and went into detail about it all! The tests weren't too bad and they were all very straight forward!
ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PROFESSOR. Lecture every day but everything that will be on the tests he talks about in class, so don't miss. Quiz every Monday but they are very helpful. Don't have to do basically any hw because he goes over everything in lectures. If you are a good student who shows up, takes good notes, and studies, you will succeed!!
Is very clear about expectations and course material. No papers assigned and very minimal homework apart from readings.
Great Prof and is very passionate about Philosophy. Board notes are a little messy but if you pay attention they are easy to follow. Definitely don't skip class because the exams are all based on the lecture. All in all, highly recommend!!
I loved this class. I was not looking forward to it at all, but he managed to turn my MWF 8am phil class into something I looked forward to going to every other day. He is from the east coast so expect that type of humor. Lots of reading but most of it is covered in class, so if you are swamped you can skip it and be ok.
Laumakis was one of my favorite Philosophy profs, if you can take him do so. He goes over everything you need to know for quizzes and tests in class. He cares about students and their learning & has a passion for philosophy. He is probably the only reason I enjoyed philosophy. There's a quiz each week but it's easy. Definitely recommend taking him!
Dr. Laumakis is a great guy and a great prof. Although the material is difficult at times and his notes can be confusing, overall I enjoyed this class. If you do have him, do not miss class or you will not pass. Even if you get the notes from a friend, they will not make sense unless you are there. Overall a great professor.
Great teacher who thoroughly explains the content of the readings each class. There is a lot of reading assigned, weekly quizzes (true/false, but are pretty hard), 3 thought experiments, and 4 tests. The tests include multiple choice, matching, and true/false, but are very hard; you will definitely need to study.
Pretty easy course if you put the necessary time into it. Attending lecture is pretty much 75% of the work required for the class and he makes it really entertaining. Reading the text is important as he will dismiss class if no one has read it (I was the 1 of like 3 out of 75 that did). The material is dense, but he will explain it to you in class.
Steve delivered a boring subject in a fun and interesting way. Philosophy can be difficult but he is willing to explain and help. Although he talks fast, if you ask he will go back or slow down. Maybe intimidating but fun and helpful when you get to know him. Would recommend.
Some people don't like his personality because he's very brash and has the whole "I'm from the East Coast" attitude but I felt like with how confusing philosophy can be, he explained things super well and had good office hours/study session before the final. It's a class where it's easy to ask questions and participation matters
I really liked Dr. L! He explains the content well and if someone is confused he will explain it until they get it. Make sure you do the readings and assignments so you know what's going on in class. He will hold review sessions and is very easy to contact.
I really enjoyed Dr. L as a professor! He is always willing to help his students succeed. The review sessions he holds are very helpful.
Dr. Laumakis is hilarious! He is aware that most people taking his class are taking it as a general and are not interested in philosophy so he makes it interesting with hilarious stories. The homework is not hard and the weekly quizzes are actually incredibly helpful. He is very clear about what is on his tests and has no trick questions.
funny af, but don't take him if you are easily offended. His board notes are hard to follow sometimes but he made an 8am philosophy lecture amazing. He is really fair and just wants to see your test grades improving. Entirety of your grade is based on MC tests and quizzes.
Dr. L has a very big personality. He started the semester off by reading his fall evaluations and several of them pointed out how much rude he was. However, he makes philosophy easy to understand with stories and analogies. Most of the grade is based on weekly MC quizzes and 4 exams, but he's clear about what is on the exam.
He has a weird grading system but you know a head of time. I had heard some bad stuff about PHIL but it was a cool class. Good in depth lecture
Dr. L is from Philly and keeps it real. He is funny and easy to pay attention to. He talks fast but has clear notes and brings plenty of energy to class. I am an engineering major but he made philosophy worth it and interesting.
If you attend the lectures, and do some of the readings you will be fine!
Great prof, always makes the class laugh and you can tell he really wants his students to do well. I hate philosophy but Dr. L made it so enjoyable and interesting. Wish he taught a 200 level!
Yes, Laumakis is funny, but he's not a great professor. He seems to enjoy coming across as unsympathetic and offers minimal feedback on work. He monopolizes discussion even in seminars and ridicules opinions that differ from his own. He's also constantly furious at A. the eagles, B. other people's driving, or C. the world at large. Chill, dude.
Laumakis is hilarious and extremely intelligent regarding philosophy. Despite that, his lectures are extremely hard to follow. No powerpoints. When he lectures, everything is written on the 6 white boards across the room. His notes are very unorganized and hard to follow. Class could benefit from a more structured lecture. Still a good class.
Laumakis is a really fun guy. There is a good amount of work, but its not challenging. Quite a bit of reading, quiz every week, two papers, and 4 tests. If you put in the effort it really isn't hard to get an A. Dr. L is very laid back about things.
I literally can not speak higher about this professor. Makes a very dull subject very interesting, and his sense of humor is incredible. 4 tests, all MC and T/F, which are a breeze if you show up to class. I would take him for every class if i could! Take his class!!!!!!
He was fine, very lecture heavy. Made class interesting, I wouldn't necessarily say fun though. Not very understanding if you have other things (health problems, etc.) going on in your life. Easy class if you show up. Recommended if you want an easy A.
Lecture heavy, but makes the class fun with his sense of humor and funny stories. There are weekly quizzes and 4 exams which are based off of his board notes (I never read any of the required texts). If you attend class, take notes, and study for exams you'll do just fine. I recommend anyone who's considering taking his class to do so!!
Dr. Laumakis is a good choice. You can tell he's taught the class a lot. He presents all the information that you need for the test. That's all though. He does not provide any thought-provoking ideas as one would think a philosophy professor would do. He really likes the Eagles
Laumakis is a great professor. He is always willing to talk to you. Attend his weekly review sessions! They are super helpful. His lectures are fast paced, but he is funny and the content is interesting! The only thing he does not do is put grades in canvas, so you need to talk to him to know and keep up! Totally doable though!
Laumakis is a great professor. His tests are multiple choice and there is nothing on the tests that was not covered in class. He made learning about philosophers entertaining which is not something I ever imagined.
Dr. Laumakis is a really interesting, funny professor. I personally hate the subject of philosophy but he is the best possible professor I could have taken for this class. He gives a lot of real-world examples and keeps you engaged during lectures. His notes are basically all hand-written on the whiteboard. Tests are kind of hard. Take Laumakis!!
Good prof for philosophy but he talked loud and it gave me a headache. He tries to make phil as easy and clear as possible but it still kind of confusing. He does care about his students and wants them to succeed. Compared to other phil profs he is probably the best. Tests and quizzes are all T/F or multiple choice.
He covers most of the readings in class with summaries, but definitely read to get the little things down, as he'll put it on the test. Long lectures, messy handwriting, but very entertaining.
Great professor! Super funny and enthusiastic! His grading isn't all bad, but there's lots of readings. As long as you go to class and take notes (which are btw, all over the place) you'll do just fine! His lectures are heavy, but he tries to make them fun. Attendance is mandatory and it does affect how well you do on your tests and quizzes.
Dr. Laumakis is an hilarious professor! He wears Hawaiian shirts every single day and swears a lot. He is so funny! He really knows philosophy incredibly well and tries to use analogies and real world ideas to help you understand. He talks a little fast, but if you ask him to slow down, he totally will. He loves student feedback and is great!
Dude is hilarious and which made the lectures better. You need to pay a lot of attention to board notes because he tells you everything you need to know and doesn't post notes online. Barely any homework which is nice but you definitely need to study the material. Overall he just wants you to succeed so go to him with questions.
So this man is funny and nice but I don't know if my brain is incapable of comprehending the subject philosophy or if my brain is incapable of comprehending the words coming out of his mouth. Quizzes on every Monday, only 4 tests, only two writing/exercise assignments. I took notes and paid attention and failed every test...
Dr. L is a genuinely hilarious and intelligent man! A lot of it was sarcastic and ironic but I loved it (He read reviews from here on the first day of class xD) The class wasn't a walk in the park, but he told us everything we would need to do and know for the next quiz/test. Don't really need to read if you can just show up and take good notes!
If you ever get confused, don't be afraid to ask. He may seem intimidating, but he wants you to do good and understand the material. Although the class wasn't an easy A for me, I was sad when the semester was over. He makes jokes throughout the class that makes learning the material more fun. Even though it was a hard class, I would take him again!
Dr. L was a hilarious prof for a tougher class! He loves to joke around and made lectures very entertaining. Show up to class to pass. He goes over everything you need to know for the weekly quizzes and encourages good note taking. Can go pretty fast so get ready to write. Overall, not a super hard class and is always willing to help. Take him!!!
The best professor I ever had!
Professor Laumakis was a very nice professor but is extremely lecture-heavy. He does not record his lectures and writes all of his notes on a chalkboard. Class is fine but very hard to follow along to. Unless you pay attention well to random notes on a chalkboard, I would recommend looking other ways. Very nice guy though.
Dr. L is one of the best professors I've ever had! He's hilarious and a super engaging lecturer. Although there is a lot of material covered over the semester, he makes it super interesting and easy to understand. He gives you a really easy to follow grade breakdown the first day of class, so you always know where your grade is at. 10/10!
I am currently taking Dr. L for Environmental Ethics and I absolutely love his class. He is so laid back and funny, and you are on a clear route to an A if you actively participate in class discussion. He lets you determine where some of your grades falls and acknowledges that students do have struggle points. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Dr. L was the WORST teacher I have ever had. He is disrespectful, sexist, and rude. Saying that his rudeness is because "Oh I'm from Philly" doesn't excuse outwardly shaming your students when they ask questions. He favorites his male students and it is extremely obvious. I have never felt so uncomfortable, belittled, and shamed by a professor.
I was looking forwards to this class with Dr. Laumakis, but unfortunately it wasn't what I hoped. The class is structured around weekly 10 point quizzes bases on the prior week's lectures. This professor was sexist and made this clear in his class period and lectures. He also has office hours at 7:30am making it difficult to go to them.
Laumakis is completely out of touch as a professor He disrespects, discriminates, taunts, and belittles students He expects you to fail & doesn't take criticism well Lectures are unbearable, as he spews the info onto you continuously with no clear end, & it's all written poorly on whiteboard He's also made very disturbing & uncomfortable comments
Dr. L. is a great prof! Students who complain about him being sexist are clueless. His so-called sexist remarks are actually attributable to other philosophers who he taught us about, not what he is claiming, so wake up people! If you want an entertaining and very knowledgeable prof who cares about your learning, then take Dr. L:)
He is angry bc the school is no longer providing him with any pay increases but rather putting their money towards the athletic department. Which is completely fair, but he takes it out on his students. He teaches super fast and doesn't explain things that well. Not easy to get help from outside of class. He makes you feel stupid in/out of class.
The class is mainly quiz based. His class is really mainly just lecture. Participation is 20% of your grade but he is accommodating with extra assignments if you don't speak up in class. He is hard to catch for office hours & leaves campus by noon. He takes a letter grade off for 3+ grammar mistakes on papers. Harder than you think it'll be.
He's not a bad professor, he's just passionate about philosophy. Quizzes every week. He talks the whole class and expects us to understand everything right after he says it. not very understanding that we are people with real lives or that some of us are just here for a credit. moves quickly. forces participation
Dr. Laumakis is an expert in his field, and it is evident each day in class. He offers ample resources on the material he lectures and gives many examples to try and get students to understand. His lectures can be hard to follow sometimes but have important information that won't really be received if you do not pay attention to lectures.
Weekly quizzes on the reading assignments. He's a very animated teacher but is unclear with expectations on papers. His tests were detail-oriented but not too bad overall. He is helpful if you go to his office hours.
Dr. Laumakis seems like he cares more about spewing out all of the course content rather than student comprehension of the curriculum. Lectures are long and hard to sit through. Constant abbreviations make it hard for students to follow along with his notes. Overall Dr. Laumakis came across as rude, blaming it on his roots in Philadelphia.
The syllabus for this class is very difficult, tests make up 80% of your grade. But, I would encourage you to take this class. Dr. Laumakis really knows what he is talking about & he is very engaging in class. Although I did not do the best in this class, I am glad that I had the opportunity to take it with Dr. Laumakis.
Super funny professor, and interesting lectures. However, can be difficult to pay attention to when his class is ONLY lectures. I'll miss his funny jokes, but this was a hard class, do not be mistaken. If you're trying to get through philo with an easy A, I'd advise you to take a different prof.
For being a writing intensive class, there is relatively little writing, but he is a harsh grader. He doesn't offer feedback before you submit papers. He takes off a full letter grade for every 3 grammar mistakes. His lectures are disorganized and he doesn't stop to make sure that students understand the content.
He's endearing- for the first three weeks. Has one formula: assign reading (from his own (bad and expensive) textbook, select from a pool of about six jokes, mention Dahmer a questionable amount, and dumb the content down so much for the fy's that it adheres to only one way of thinking. Like a hs class. I was not learning philosophy, but Laumakis.
Took over summer. Very hands off with no deadlines except for the very end of the session, but probably because it was an asynchronous short term. Makes you purchase his $80 book to do his chapter quizzes, relatively easy but dumb. Pretty straightforward though, but horrible grader on anything written, but would recommend for asynchronous.
The beginning of this course, I questioned the negative reviews as he seemed like a nice, funny guy. However, if you want to do well in this class I recommend becoming a regular with the philosophy tutors. Professor Laumakis is not clear with what he looks for in assignments, and is not clear with what is going to be on the midterm/final.
Professor Laumakis can be a polarizing figure, but if you engage with his system, it can work well. The lectures are dense but insightful. Use unstuck study, the textbook, and study sessions to succeed in this challenging yet rewarding course.
All he does is lecture and it not really teaching the class, he just talks and expects you to know what is going on.
