Took Leone for 1A, 1B, and 1C if that tells you anything at all. Not only is he great to look at, he is an awesome teacher. Easy tests, papers aren't too difficult and he's always willing to help out whenever needed--proofreading paper, office hours, etc
Great teacher, actually teaches you something, and makes class interesting. Has high expectations but helps you achieve. If you hate english he is the guy to take because he will make you enjoy it... I have had no teacher more passionate about education
Mr. Leone has a noticeable passion for what he does. This is what makes him such a great teacher. He is the only English teacher I have had who actually teaches important skills and makes it very interesting.
one of the best
Best English class I took in college. He made the instructions completely clear in class, and he had plenty office hrs to help with brainstorming and proof reading. I thoroughly enjoyed his class.

Liked him a lot, he pushes back dates though so you have to make your own schedule instead of following his
You better pretend to agree with him if you want a good grade. He talks down to you most of the time. You can learn a few things if you can get past the fact that he is so full of himself. Get on his good side and be careful if you take this class...it's stifling.
He's a GENIUS and just a human at the same time. His class was great fun if you did the reading on schedule.
I got an "A" in his class but I earned it. He lets you revise any papers that had a low score but doesn't give them back to you until the end of the semester when you're working on your research paper. You do nothing for most of the semester then BAM! He dumps a majority of the work on you in the last half of the semester. VERY DIFFICULT!
Professor Leone actually cares about what he lectures. It makes it that much more interesting to be in class. And when I started to fall behind, he didn't hesitate to help me out. A teacher who does that, I always appreciate.
Good Class
Loved Mr. Leone, took 3 classes with him, worked extremely hard for the grades i got, but he taught me more than any other prof. so far! Keep on top of your work, and dont try to BS your way through the class, because he will notice.
I took Leone as my first class in college. Everything he teaches has a purpose, and what he teaches is very informative and applicable to the homework and tests. The class is not easy but I found it interesting. He is very helpful and wants you to pass. But you have to study, and listen in class. Overall good teacher-
Mr. Leone is an awesome professor. He has taught me more than any other teacher, even now that I'm at a 4 year school. I still find myself explaining points in classes that he had once explained to me. Listen and take good notes, you really have to work for your grade. Best Prof. I have ever seen!
Discussion based classes. Lots of short essay writing. Great in-class time though
Mr. Leone is a great teacher. You have to work hard for your grade. Not an easy A.
He is a really great teacher, with a unsuspected good taste in music. He is naturally very funny and is a good entertainer. The final was a dramatic reading of Hamlet and a essay were you use all your prior gained knowledge from the class. Take good notes of what he says !! you can use them
I loved this class (Intro to the Novel). Mr. Leone was always interesting and gave me a really great understanding of the books we were reading. If you read the books, spend time on the essays, and study for the tests (easy) then you will get a good grade. Talk to him during office hours- he's cool and helpful! HIGHLY recommend this prof.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! im shocked at all the positive comments. belittles students when they ask questions and is very unclear in lectures. students in my class always complained about him.
This guy is a real teacher. He wants students to actually think and learn for themselves. If you ask him for help he wants to help. He changes the schedule a lot usually for extensions on papers. Be willing to try and you will see dividends on your effort. It is a critical thinking class so leave your bias at home and prepare to think!GOOD TEACHER.
Leone keeps a professional image but is rather distant to students. The class was difficult but mostly because he didn't explain what's expected. Has a particular thing he looks for in every paper. He is a tough grader. Be prepared to spend at least 10 hours on each paper to get an A. Lots of people dropped after papers were handed back...
A super slow & HARD grader. By the time I turned in my 4th paper, I had yet to get a grade back on my first, so I had no idea what he was looking for, but classmates were getting theirs back with Cs & Ds. There are 5 books for the semester?we read 3 in the last month and a half of class. LOTS of reading, writing & class presentations.dont reccomend
take home tests are 2 short answers and an essay for each book, some books have in-class reading tests as well, but you have to put off reading just to finish all the essays. his comments are helpfull if you get them, but dont hold your breath. i had to beg and wait outiside his office 2 hours the week before finals to get just my first papers back
I am a math person & was dreading this class. I ended up loving the class & actually came to like literature. I took the class during the summer & the 3 hour lectures flew right by (no joke). I got a lot out of it, but I wish I could've taken it for fun without a grade because the class was't easy (higher standards than most students are used to).
if english is something you enjoy being challenged in, like me, then Leone is the teacher for you. he challeges students to do their absolute best. i passed the ap english test, yet got a c for the first paper i wrote for him, which shows his hard grading style.if you go into his office hours, he helps you greatly, and he gives many time extensions!
This class is HARD!!!! if you feel like taking an easy class and getting good grades then STAY AWAY. If you feel like working your butt off to be givin a c then this is the class for you!
Mr. Leone's class is what made me consider being an English major! He does so much more than just go by the book, he understands that different people have different opinions and even encourages it! Although not the easiest class, I definitely learned a lot, and if you care and put in effort, he will too! USE OFFICE HOURS!
This teach is horrible, we didn't do any work for the first two months of class then the last three weeks he gave out 6 essay assignments. Plus we didn't receive any feed back or guidance from him it was all peer editing. Explanations of assignments always came after project was handed in.
Great teacher, learned so much about english and life through his teachings, recommend him to anyone for 201b atleast, does pile on a lot of work towards end of semester and grades hard, but makes you better
Great class & concepts. Really interesting. He sets up the first half of class teaching the concepts you will present and write about in the second half. Office hours are beneficial - he is patient and funny. Text books are really cheap! I use concepts from this class in all my other classes. Cool guy.
Great class. I learned a ton. Wish I had taken it sooner. Leone is an awesome instructor. You really learn from him. He is direct, patient and funny. Read the packet and think for yourself and you’ll really enjoy this class. Text is super inexpensive! One of the last great professors who wants his students to learn and think for themselves.
very monotone and confusing. he is very smart and wise but he is not a great teacher. class average on all tests is a D. very strict
He writes tons of comments on your paper on how to improve your work and will even let you revise your work for a better grade! what instrcutor does that? Awesome! This class is about learning how to think. read his comments, you'll learn a ton. He'll work with you one on one if you take the time to go to an office hour or catch him after class.
So English has always been my strong suit but I found this teacher to be very frustrating who gave me disappointing grades without really telling me what he wanted. He's a very critical grader and very opinionated, I think his ego consumes his teaching a lot. Though, he is very smart but not the best teacher.
He's an intelligent person but rather unhelpful as a teacher. As an English major I went in expecting to really enjoy this class, but instead found it needlessly difficult and confusing. The class got very little feedback. Although he allows you to "revise" papers we didn't get our first assignment of the year back until finals week. Frustrating.
Currently taking his class- still haven't got our 1st asnmt back & next week is finals. We haven't covered 1/2 of the course outline, took an exam which we prob. learned 30% of. Now we students must pay the price for his poor time management & write 2 papers + group projct all in the next 3 classes we have w/ him. Oh yay! NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS!!
He's a really smart guy but a very tough grader. Also grades very slowly and you don't get anything back until the last 2 weeks of the semester. All the big assignments and revisions of previous assignments are shoved into finals week. If you don't write exactly what he wants, you will not get an A. He's still a good teacher, but quite arrogant.
I love reading but I severely dislike this professor. He's condescending and talks himself up a bit. I had a meeting with him before I dropped the course, I've tried taking this twice with him, and he had a few choice things to say that I found totally unprofessional. Don't waste your time and join a book club.
Learned almost nothing and had little homework first half to ¾ of the semester, than was overloaded with assignments which we were not prepared for. We received our first grades finals week and still had work to turn in after the semester ended. Doesn’t teach much or time manage and grades hard, not a good combo...
I had a great time in Leone's film class. He taught us different ways to look at films and introduced me to some really intriguing concepts and films I've never heard of but are now my favorites. You can tell he is really passionate about film and is interested in the student's thoughts and reasons for why we like certain films. Highly recommend!
His instructions are very vague, but his expectations are extremely specific. This made his class extremely difficult and stressful.
Leone is an excellent professor. He by far the most knowledgeable teacher I've ever had. His instructions for papers can be a little loosely stated but if you ever have any questions about it he will answer it clearly. Also pretty funny guy who has some good stories. Attendance isn't mandatory but don't skip on a workshop day.
The novels are not super long. good Varity and good books. I got way more out of this class than I thought I would. Prof Leone is super helpful if you make an appointment during his office hour. Participate you'll get a lot out of this class.
I took this class last year and since taking more classes including more English classes I have learned the most from Mr. Leone's class. If any class preps you to be a good writer and understand essays and actually find some enjoyment in the process this is it. follow instructions and think for yourself. Ask questions He'll help you.
Professor Leone is a great English instructor that prepared me for higher levels of reading and writing. If you are unsure about your topic or your writing, then he is there to help. Participation matters in this course as you will be communicating and reading other students papers as well, so be prepared to think and speak for yourself.
For the love of god, do not take this class, I've never been so stressed.
The first 34 of the class was basically a waste of time due to the fact EVERYTHING happens in literally the last 2 weeks. I've been up for 2 days writing - trying to pass I don't think I have ever been this stressed over simply getting a C. Great teacher bad schedule.
He isn't qualified to teach film analysis, and uses terms and concepts incorrectly. Textbook is vague and confusing. Tests require objective answers to subjective questions. There's little lecturing or instruction; class is mostly movies. Poor time management. Expectations were unclear, grades were harsh. Assignments all high-value. Do not advise.
This was a really hard english class. Tests were very tough, but doable. He taught the material well enough, but the coursebook and notes are mandatory. Extensions are nice and easy, and he will help if you go to office hours. His grading is brutal. All based off logical proofs. Don't procrastinate. If possible, take an easier class. A lot of work.
don't take his class. he is the hardest grader ever and only excepts papers his way. he pus off assignments until the last 2 weeks for finals when you are stressed with all your other classes as well. this is a very hard professor and wouldn't i wouldn't recommend taking his class
Very good instructor with an encyclopedic knowledge of film and film history. I came away from the class able to enjoy films more fully by watching them with a critical eye. He can be a tough grader, but if you're involved in the class and speak with him regarding any concerns you have he'll help you get a good grade.
Be prepared to work, but it's for a good reason. Leone knows what he's talking about, and if you want to become a better writer he will definitely get you where you want to be. If you're lazy and tend to procrastinate, this class could be tough for you. But for me, a mild procrastinator, I got through fine, and feel like I'm a 10x better writer.
He's going to make you work, but it is a chill class. IF YOU NEED HELP GO TO HIM. In "Intro to Novel" you should stay on top of your reading. Get ahead if you can. He is a cool dude and great conversation. Do not expect an A from him if you are a lazy student. Do the work, ask for his help, and you will appreciate his class. He cares for students.
He's is an intelligent and likable teacher. Unfortunately, as a Professor I don't recommend. He didn't grade any of our assignments on time, which made it hard to do the next assignment based on little to no feedback. Expectations are HIGH, but not CLEAR. You must take the initiative to ask for assignments/ help and participation matters. NO easy A
I never thought I would actually look forward to an English class. Prof Leone makes sure required texts are all under $20!! He was always willing to answer my questions and look over my paper before I turned it in, even outside of his office hours. Solid instructor.
This prof tought me how to write a solid essay. My grades improved in my other classes due to the things I learned in this one. Take him and learn something. Take notes from the board. Most of the test questions and answers are in his lectures.
I learned more in this class than any others. Interesting content and text. A game changing course for sure. Read the syllabus so you know when everything is due. Go to his office hour if you want your paper looked over before submitting it.
To attend Prof. Leone's english classes is to apprehend how crucial a truly dedicated, and ardently scholarly instructor is to invigorating a similarly devoted and scholary drive within his students. Prof. Leone is definitely just such an instructor. However, you'll only get as much as you give: give it your all, he'll more than meet you halfway.
He was constantly late, then complained about not enough time in class. Papers and our only progress report weren't given back 'til the end of week 16; he gave vague instructions, then got angry and graded harshly when students didn't understand. And forget stating a different interpretation of Shakespeare than his. No discussions, just lectures.
He gave the class 6 papers with only 4 weeks left in the class. He is TERRIBLE! Do not take the class! Seriously, he the harshest grader, and believes his word and interpretation is final. I deeply regret taking this class.
I am more confident in my abilities after taking this class. It is a lot of info and you will write a couple papers. Prof Leone is passionate about his subject and gets great class discussions going. I have never learned more from an English class. Its cool being in a class where you are supposed to think instead of just repeating the book.
Gave us 20 minutes to take a 56 question final. Believes his interpretation is the only correct interpretation. Gave us lots of work with short deadlines, and didn't provide feedback until two weeks before the final. Don't take this class unless you are already very strong with analyzing literature.
However, he is a tough grader and thinks he has all the answers. He often dismisses students and gets angry. He kept bumping things back on the schedule and all the assignments were crunch-time. It sucked. HARD. The ideas he talks about in lecture are interesting, on the plus. Also as someone mentioned, 20 minutes for a final. That's ridiculous.
If you want an A or B grade, you need to got o his office hours and ask for help on anything. He is great in the one-on-one setting. He is willing to listen if you willing to make the effort and let him know what you are struggling with. He can be a nice guy, but if you only choose to notice when he gets "frustrated" you'll limit learning
Took his Intro to Novel class my first year of college just on a whim. It's still the most challenging, engaging, and rewarding class I've taken so far. Crazy workload for a 3 credit class, but his critiques and feedback really helped make me a better writer and a more confident person. He was always happy to help during office hours, too.
Got me thinking about Shakespeare and more interested in his material. Didn't think I would learn too much but I really did. He respects students opinions and gets them to talk about why they have that opinion. He is all about everyone learning new ways to look at material and offers some great insights. Text was a great price too!
I learned more in this class than in any other English class I have ever taken. The stuff I learned in this classes help in my other class too. Solid class, cool teacher.
Cool guy. Introduced me to concepts about film that make movies way more interesting and enjoyable. And I already loved movies to begin with. Can't go wrong with this class and professor.
Solid class. I'm not an English major but really liked this class and his teaching style.
Professor Leone not only teaches his students how to write but also how to analyze the human condition. Easily the best professor I've had and I am a finance student!
Great professor. I made more friends and connections in this class than I ever have before. The subjects he teaches are never brushed over, he dives into everything and it really helps you learn the subject for real, and its a super fun class! Awesome guy, super respected by all of us. Not an easy A, but honest if you love the class you'll do well.
Professor Leone is a really awesome English teacher. He discusses important problems in our modern society and inspires his students to critically think about those issues. He often gets really into a certain topic and gets behind on the stuff we actually had to get done this semester. The last couple weeks were a little rough since we had to rush.
A solid choice for an English class. Not an easy A though. He really wants you to learn and explore. He'll make you work for it and dive deep. Very smart guy. Knows what he's doing and grades fairly.
Tough class, but you can succeed if you put in the effort. He gives great feedback on papers and really knows how to make people better writers. Not the greatest at keeping up with the schedule so be prepared for a bit of a race at the end of the semester.
This professors tests are some of the most ambiguous ive taken, and although this issue was raised to him he continues to write them in a way that makes them much more difficult than they need to be. They are mostly just full of his opinions or interpretations so if you dont agree or hear him say it you wont do well. I would avoid his class.
Took 201B, Film and Literature, and Film studies. Smart, tough grader, can sometimes fall behind but adpats well, work comes back late, but intriguing class and discussions, knows his stuff and expects good work from his students as he provides good teaching. Good to talk to outside of class for papers.
By far the best professor I have ever taken! I am not an english student and absolutely despised writing prior to taking Professor Leone's class. Put in the work and you will become not only a better writer, but a critical thinker.
You want to actually understand the material and improve your skills? Take Leone! Super interesting class. Here are my pointers: if you need to miss a class let him know ahead of time, try to attend every class because it can me discussion based, but he doesn't put people on the spot, read his notes on your papers and homework - they really help!
TAKE ENGLISH 201A ONLINE. that is all, thank you.
The tests are multiple-choice and based on opinions discussed in class. You'll write an essay on why a certain film is a timeless masterpiece & you can't write a different opinion. Readings teach subjective and objective sides of cinema but classwork focuses heavily on the subjective side. Due to this & things similar to this I don't recommend him.
Highly recommend this professor! His material is somewhat hard, but as long as you attend lectures you'll do fine. As well, he gives great feedback and cares about his students.
Really enjoys what he does, if you read and take notes/attend lectures then tests aren't difficult. Some students don't like him because he is direct, but he is a very understanding, knowledgeable professor and wants his students to succeed. Only downside is he doesn't return papers back in a timely manner.
Took Leone's Film & Lit class, he is an amazing prof. Really passionate about what he is teaching and if you do the work it'll show in your grade. Doesn't return papers back until like the last week of school, but if you email him and ask him for feedback he is more than willing to help you out.
Leone just wants you to regurgitate what he tells you. He doesn't want to think about ideas that he hasn't told you. His lectures are boring. He favors those who become like cult followers. Other than that, he's basically mediocre.
I have no idea what people are saying about his classes being a "cult following" (?). If you do not go to class/attend (or at least review) the lectures you won't do well. However I think that is pretty much to be expected for any COLLEGE level course. Half the people who leave these reviews should never have even walked on campus.
I definitely think this class wasn't meant for distanced learning. The lectures weren't mandatory but I wish they had been because I wasn't learning enough from the class posts. Majority of the class was discussion posts that were left ungraded until the last week of class. I emailed the professor for help multiple times and didn't get a response.
I do not recommend Leone as a professor. He did not grade any of our work until finals week, gave very little feedback but still graded very hard. I was excited to learn about film and be introduced to new movies but I ended up wishing I hadn't wasted my time and money on his class. One of my worst professor experiences!
Never gives grades back, is very condescending, and thinks he's profound. He's not.
Mr. Leone's ENGL 237 summer class was not what I was expecting. I expected it to be on the same level as a music/art appreciation class, but it was not. This class isn't heavy on work; this class is mostly discussion based. There is one major thesis, and that's it. He is a very hard grader. Expect him to absolutely roast you in the feedback.
Awesome material and I learned way more than I expected. I can look at films in a totally different and more enriching way! You must participate, read, and study for the exam, don't wing it.
I wish I took this class sooner. Prof Leone gets your English writing and critical reading skills polished! I already do better in other classes since I took Prof Leone's 201A. Take this class if you want to be successful in college. Speak up in class discussions. You are graded on participation too.
Most frustrating professor,He pushed out so many heavy point assignments, then never graded anything. He hasn't graded things since September 11th and it's currently December 1st. The few assignments he dud grade were graded a month and a half after its due then put harsh feedback after not responding or helping in the right time. DONT TAKE CLASS
Leone was very accessible and helpful. I had internet issues for the last bit of class, and he was willing to work with me. I took as a summer class, which was about two movies a week. Lots of discussion posts. Movies were mostly interesting, although a few silent films made it hard to focus. Cheap textbook. Good professor, tough class.
A great professor who clearly cares about film and his students, I learned so much in his class and he made time outside of it to talk to and give advice to me and many other students in his class. He does grade late but that's the only downside, if you love film and want to learn a lot I'd definitely recommend this class!
This class was so insanely stressful, literally kept me up at night. I love film, but this class made it hard to feel motivated with it because of the amount of essays he had us to. We HAD to write essays on certain films and why they're masterpieces when they're not, it was very hard. There was THREE different finals, and graded things last min.
Steve is a tough grader who can come off as vague or like a smart ass. It is clear that he cares about the workload of his course, and with communication changed multiple due dates/rearranged the schedule towards what students were asking for. Lots of homework, reading, and writing. Work together, and advocate for your needs.
Leone is a great teacher because of how serious he can be. At first there was a period of adjusting towards thinking objectively- once I was able to be objective he seemed like less of an asshole! Lots of homework, but so necessary towards the content of the course. I loved this class despite the hard work necessary.
Professor Leone's class is challenging but engaging. He expects a lot, but if you put in the work, you'll learn a ton. The films are interesting, and unstuck ai was a lifesaver for prepping.
Took this professor for English 237 and English 201A and in both cases only 2-3 assignments were graded heading into or around finals week so I didn't know my actual grade until the final. Really annoying because I had no clue wether I was actually failing or passing or if I was doing the right things on assignments.
Wow, can a professor get more horrible. I already don't like eng, but it's a gen-ed class, so I do it, and every year I've had eng, I get my work done. Even if the workload is difficult, I understand I need to get this done. this professor graded everything last minute, not a care in the world, and would put 0's down for stuff I already finished.
Highly egotistical, cannot accept being wrong in any situation. Students in my class will ask questions, and he will avoid them if it's difficult or he doesn't understand. Really likes to talk about himself, any question about him will last maybe 10-30 minutes. Class work is good, except he does film analysis. This is an English class, not that.
He was constantly rude and very pretentious. He was rude to students and never willing to have a constructive conversation.
He is a professor who only wants to hear what he thinks. He has said demeaning things to me unprovoked. Didn't receive a single grade until 3 weeks before the semester ended and he graded really harshly. Waits till the last minute to grade, and doesn't give chances to improve work or offer extra credit. Please don't take this class
