Take his classes!
Prof. Long explains everything really well and seems to really want his students to understand the information and love the topic as much as he does. He is also very funny-he puts in these hilarious slides or tells funny stories almost every class. DEFINITELY take from Professor Long if you can-he's awesome!

Always wants to hear back from his students, including a weekly review and lots of discussion. Even his lectures are fun, with lots of little joke slides. Don't run, or you'll trigger his chase instinct.
He is a great guy, always making lectures engaging and fun. I actually enjoy going to his class, it can defintiely make you smile
Awesome professor! Very funny and really knows his stuff. Is genuinely interested in his students and is very willing to help. Definitely take his class!!!
His class is a lot of fun. He wants students to understand the material, and presents it in a fun way. Definitely take his class!
i <3 him
My favorite class this semester! He REALLY values his students' input and tries to be the best professor ever! He is entertaining and presents the material in a clear and understandable way. DEFINITELY take his class!
He as awesome! one of the best professors i ever had! always trying to help and make his classes fun! take it!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Funny and interesting and fair, I strongly recommend him.
Loved his class. Teaching style is engaging and fun, keeps the student interested. Definitely take his class!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Explains every concept in detail and wants his students to learn and understand what they are doing. Definitely loves his work. Genuine great guy willing to help out if you need help with anything. Very accessible and reasonable work load. I only wish he taught more classes so I could have him again!
?Well, like I said, my rugged good looks are a weapon of mass destruction and even Jack Bower can?t stop me.? - Dr.Long I don't know if I even need to say anything else, but I will say that Dr. Long's passion for his job is clearly evident and he is one of the most available Profs at Richmond!!
This professor taught me more than any teacher I have had thus far. Extremely helpful.
Dr. Long is awesome!!! I love going to his class. He cares so much about his students. You can tell he's incredibly passionate about international politics...and his enthusiasm is inspiring me to consider it as a career. I will definitely take more classes with him during my four years. Highly recommended!!
Dr. Long is awesome!!! I love going to his class. He cares so much about his students. You can tell he's incredibly passionate about international politics. I will definitely take more classes with him during my four years. Highly recommended!! OH, and ignore the comment below this... UR doesn't even have a class called PLSC 100.
Great Professor! Super reasonable, entertaining, helpful, reduced the work-load of our class when we asked, take his classes!
Looks like Stephen Colbert!!! Also an awesome teacher, so awkwardly funny and makes class really enjoyable!
SLONG. Love the Converses. Great professor, except the only grades you get are a midterm, final and policy brief,so if you're a great paper-writer you don't really get a chance to shine. His midterm/final are VERY straight-forward. Go to lecture, read the Friday readings and go to the review sessions and you'll do very well.
Extremely reasonable, especially when it comes to paper writing. He changed the class this year to make it harder, but I like it just as much as people who have taken it before. Made me want to major in political science.
He is knowledgeable and you learn a lot, but it takes awhile to get grades back, which in the end hurt my grade because of the scale he uses.
Long is a great professor! The way he structures his class is great because you know exactly what to expect and it's up to determine when you turn in your work. He's a tough grader but if you do the reading and study for the exams your grades will reflect your work
Professor Long, we all know you're reading this! We all love you! Amazing teacher. Funny, smart, and extremely helpful at ANY time. Great part of the Richmond family. Read as many articles as you can, interact in class, and go to exam reviews. Class is very interested and Long makes it even better! Have a good Summer Professor!
Very interesting class. I like Dr. Long's teaching style. He usually lectures using .ppt. I like that he doesn't waste too much of class time asking students what they think about the material. I'm just going to say it; student participation is overrated. He's obsessed with writing. If you're a good writer, you'll do well in class.
Very understanding and helpful!
Good Professor. Entertaining lectures. Tips: Work really hard on papers & policy memo. He grades these hard and they're worth a lot. His directions on policy memo are pretty vague and he doesn't really guide students in the making of the memo.
Class lectures are interesting for lectures and the discussions are good. More questions posed to students during lectures would be nice. I think it would be cool to spend a bit more time on current events. Very helpful with writing, but grades are tough. Hopefully the exams are reasonable with emphasis on class discussion, not just outside reading
Dr. Long, I love your enthusiasm for class! You are so excited to teach and that makes me so excited to learn. Though lectures can be bland, Choose your own Adventure is a way to spice them up. It does seem like getting a good grade could be difficult, because there aren't many assignments, but if you do well on the few assignments you should be ok
If you're looking for personalized attention and a professor who cares, you just found your guy. I still don't get how he manages to dedicate so much time to each student but, if you make the effort, you'll learn more from him than you can possibly imagine. Pay attention to his comments, and you'll truly learn how to write and form real arguments.
Very helpful and knowledgeable; however often dry. Sometimes "quirky". He's a nice guy, but the lectures are boring. You must work to listen instead of him automatically enthralling you. If you put the work in, he will take notice and help you more than most professors.
great guy
Wonderful professor--highly recommended!
Best prof ever!
Interesting class, ALOT of reading and assignments. Can definitely be an overload. Very tough grader!!!
Dr. Long is an amazing professor! His lectures are interesting and he always has slides that allow you to follow along. He is a tough grader on papers but he will help you out a lot. He has a great sense of humor and lots of interesting stories to share.
Professor Long is a very helpful and kind teacher. He is very fair while grading and his tests are straightforward if you are regular in class and do the readings. Also, very helpful during office hours and has a wealth of knowledge to share, which makes the course very interesting. Video lectures are very convenient to revise concepts covered.
I like Professor Long as a person and I enjoy his class thoroughly. His exams are easy, but his papers and policy memos are harder. He gives absolutely no direction on the policy memo, so a student would not understand what they did wrong and what they would need to do for the next one. He also doesn't give helpful feedback on paper drafts.
I've heard that Professor Long's IR classes are great, but this was his first time teaching SSI, and it was not good at all. The assignments are all group work, and his directions are so unclear. The class was not effective at all. I love Dr. Long though--he's a cool guy. Loves talking about his family.
Great teacher all aroundn
good guy. didn't love his class. lectures can be kinda boring but easy enough if you keep up on the reading and participate.
Dr. Long is great, he is always very willing to read drafts of papers before you turn them in, and is flexible and understanding. The class is very interesting, and includes all of the fun topics in Political Science. Easily a solid choice for a class to take.
Pros: Availability, nice guy, good lectures, PPT slides available, helps with essays, cares outside of class Cons: I didn't see a review sheet for midterm, lots of "required" reading which didn't show up on midterm, slightly unclear study expectations. They should tenure this man.
I really like Dr. Long, but his class has a few issues. He assigns way too many papers and then can't grade them all which results in it all overlapping. Other than that, he's a good professor. He actually discussed our readings in class and on the exams so they didn't feel pointless. I will be taking more classes with Dr. Long in the future.
Generally good guy, objective in his teaching style but took off points on exam essays for nonsensical reasons he didn't clearly explain. Also his style of participation makes it necessary to constantly compete and he doesn't let you know that you need to ask a question to get more than 70%. Brought down my grade for no reason.
He is the nicest teacher. Intro to International relations is a difficult but rewarding class. There is a good amount of larger assignments (papers, policy memos, debates) but he is very clear and helpful. There are drafts for the papers which are really helpful. He is always available for extra help. I highly recommend him.
Fridays are rough in Long's class. Every week there will be a reading quiz, and in addition to that, a policy memo, debate, or essay draft. But the rest of the week is easy. Lectures are always pretty interesting, and readings are alright. Reading quizzes are pretty easy to pass and Dr. Long makes time to chat with all his students individually.
One of the best teachers that I've ever had. He is intelligent, likable and passionate about his subject. He gives many challenging assignments (papers, policy memos, debates) but tests are easy. I have learned a great deal about public speaking through his policy memos and debates, as nervous as they made me. Definitely take his classes!
I honestly can't say enough good things about Dr. Long. Great teacher, funny, and helpful. He always spends the first ten minutes of class telling stories about his family. My only criticism is that he doesn't leave many comments on first drafts, then tears apart final papers. But aside from grading, he's great and his class has taught me so much.
I would highly recommend taking a class with Dr. Long. He outlines his expectations clearly and is always willing to help clarify assignments. He is very considerate of students' busy schedules and is willing to talk with you and help you out when he can. His class is very interesting and there are plenty of opportunities to maintain a good grade.
Sometimes goes onto long tangents about his family life, or tries to be funny but isn't. Doesn't seem to be open to new ways of thinking, but is extremely helpful outside of the classroom and is there for students. Makes an effort to get to know you and help you with any questions you have, whether or not they are about the class.
Overall a great teacher - his expectations are clear, he makes an effort to get to know his students, is very knowledgeable about the subject, and is very helpful to talk to in regards to the class or school in general.
Too many dad jokes, but overall pretty good. Don't slack or you might not do super duper well (or fail, failing is a possibility).
Fails at leading constructive conversation in class, often electing to talk about his own opinions when he is supposed to be allowing students to do so. In other words, overly lectured in what is supposed to be discussion-based courses. Open to criticism, though, accessible, and generally nice person. Read all assignments carefully!!!
I had Dr. Long for an FYS class, so it likely wasn't as difficult as some of his upper level classes. I thought he was a very solid teacher that genuinely cares about his students. He can be a tough grader at times, but it's always reasonable. I would advise taking one of his classes, especially if you're a political science major.
Could not ask for more out of a senior seminar professor. Greatly accessibility outside of class. Very willing to work with students on their research papers. He is aware of how hard the assignment is and is there to help. Readings were interesting and pertinent to current events, and students had great latitude in picking their research topics.
Dr. Long is a great professor. He is very personable and class is always interesting. He has a great sense of humor. He knows the assignments are hard, and is happy to help every step of the way. Basically, HE IS A GOD!
The work load is heavy. The first essay was difficult for me but as the semester goes, you learn how to get good grades and what Dr. Long is looking for. This class easily became my favorite courses. The lectures go by so fast and are engaging as Dr. Long is a good presenter. The debates were very interesting. You need to put in work but enjoy it.
I had Dr. Long for a senior seminar and could not have wished for a better professor, he was very helpful with my project and was always accessible for questions. I had various difficulties as a humanities (IR) major, and not being familiar with the American school system, but Dr. Long was always there to help. Great class, would 100% recommend.
Dr. Long is awesome. He knows how to structure a class and make it enjoyable while also constructive. Favorite class I have ever had (American Foreign Policy). He expects a lot of his students but you can do well.
He is a great guy and made the lectures very interesting. However, I felt that his grading on papers and debates was not consistent. He didn't give great directions and seemed to grade on different criteria for the same assignments. Other than that, I truly enjoyed the class and would take him again. He definitely sparked an interest in IR for me.
Great professor. Makes a lot of dad jokes but he is great at keeping his classes interesting
Dr. Long is a great professor. This is my third class with him, and I'd honestly want to take another one. His lectures are engaging, his readings are interesting/helpful, and he obviously cares about his students. He's a fair grader, and there are a variety of assignments. If you like political science, you couldn't choose a better professor.
Dr. Long is awesome! Be prepared for lots of dad jokes. Lectures can be kind of dull at times just because he has one of those voices that makes you fall asleep despite the material being engaging. There are lots of group projects which I had a lot of fun with. He's a very fair and clear grader. Overall I highly recommend him and this class.
Dr. Long is great. His voice does not get too monotone where you lose him during lectures, and is very good at keeping the class awake. If you meet with him, he really takes the time to make you feel like he cares and wants you to improve. Can be a tough grader, but there isn't much hw and his performance (so funny) in class makes up for it.
Professor Long is my favorite Professor at UR. His lectures are always very organized and he makes the material easily accessible to students; it is very clear that Professor Long wants his students to learn. He is also extremely accessible outside of class and cares a lot about his students. Big dad energy, and a great professor overall.
dr. long is the best poli sci professor at ur. he's so caring and he takes time to make his lectures interesting. his class is one of the few classes here that makes sure he applies the theory to real world events. his papers/tests are a little challenging, but they're fair. at the end of his class, you'll be a much better writer.
Very engaging and funny guy
Dr. Long has been a highlight of my second semester. He always brings energy to the lecture and is succinct and insightful. He is a fair grader and gives enough assignments that no one assignment has the bulk of your grade riding on it, which I've appreciated. He assigns a fair, but manageable, amount of work each week. Highly recommend.
Dr. Long knows his stuff. Any piece of information you share about anything in the world, he has something to add or comment on. He gives TONS of opportunities for different types of grades with debates, two medium papers, a short policy memo, participation points a midterm, final, and quizes. He is pretty soft spoken but very very well respected.
Great guy. He's super funny and makes his lecture-heavy class very interesting. Gives a lot of assignments, but many of them are not difficult if you put in a genuine effort to learn. Cares so much about his students!!
Professor Long is a great professor. Highly recommend taking a class with him.
Dr. Long cares about his job and is always available for not only help in the class but advice and guidance too, particularly if you are at all interested in the political science major. Even if you are not though, he still knows a lot about the college landscape. His class is great, especially if you reach out and try to get to know him better.
Best professor I met in this semester!!! His class is always full of fun, lots of jokes indeed. He knows how to attract students' attention, and we all learned many useful stuff in his class. His GRADING is fair, participation point matters a lot. Not many assignments or work to be done, the only thing u need to do is to enjoy discussion in class!
Dr. Long was the best part of my semester and it was truly a joy taking his class. He gives manageable work, has a clear grading criteria and is always available. Truly loves to teach foreign policy and never fails to uplift us and creates a fantastic environment for student engagement. Is really quirky and understanding, definitely recommend.
Dr. Long is the best professor I have had for my first semester. Really interesting guy to listen to and have an engaging lecture. There are many thoughtful class discussions that he obviously spent a lot of time preparing. All around a really solid professor too because he made me feel like I was valuable as a student. STRONGLY RECOMMEND
Professor Long was my academic advisor and I have had an only positive experiences. I generally dislike my experience at Richmond but Long was certainly a highlight.
Dr. Long is a great teacher, a little boring in terms of teaching style, but his personality makes up for that for the most part!
Very nice and accessible outside of class. Grade dist. based on 2 papers 1 debate 1 policy memo 5 quizzes participation, 1 midterm and 1 final. Lectures could be boring at times but I think it is because I'm already knowledgable about the subject. Convos in class could be a little more interesting but overall not too bad of a class.
Professor Long is one of the best Professors I've had at this university. He obviously knows his material very well and wants his students to succeed. I'd definitely recommend.
I would 100% recommend Dr. Long. He is such a great professor who truly cares about his students. He meets with every student at the beginning of the class, and will help you with any assignment. If you tell him you are going through something he's got your back. Nice feedback on papers too. Great guy and professor, will definitely take again!
the lectures are too boring for my taste, and his voice can be monotonous and makes it hard for you to remember materials. Slides confusing and online video lectures are terrible and non-discernable.
He is lecture heavy but they were great: he presents them through anecdotes which I enjoyed. Super accommodating (for instance, having a more fair paper grading for non-native English speakers). He is pretty funny. He can also lead discussions very well. Assigns a lot of work early on and it gets much lighter later. Overall, 10/10.
Didnt take to him or his course the way my peers generally seem to, but hes about as nice as they come, his class is fair, and hes very inclusive. So given that and the fact that my class was also in a COVID summer, I can certainly understand his reputation.
Dr. Long makes every class worth it. The topic wasn't always the most engaging, but his dad jokes and tangents made up for it. He is one of the few professors that understands we have other classes, so he organizes his big due dates (of which there are few) in off times. Taking him again this semester.
One of the best- if not the best- professor I've had. He understands you have other classes, gives a very manageable workload, and is hilarious! He sets you up for success by posting slides, videos, and is accessible outside class for multiple purposes like assignments, academic advising, mental help. I'm excited to have him again next semester!
Favorite politcal science professor at UR. This is second class I have taken and would strongly recommend his classes. Good balance between papers, tests, and other assignments. Caring and understanding professor who will work with you.
Dr. Long is very nice, and his dad jokes are pretty good. I learned a lot from lectures and I gonna take his class again. I just feel like that the class would've been even better if his grading standards are clearer.
Professor Long is a fantastic professor, albeit slightly obsessed with Rate My Professor (just joking). He is hilarious and engaging in the classes. He is extremely humble and empathetic as well. Read your articles and engage in class; you will undoubtedly do well.
Professor Long is a very kind professor, who genuinely cares about his students. If you stay on top of the work, especially the readings you are likely to receive a solid grade. It is definitely lecture heavy, but he doesn't mind meeting with students for extra help if they need.
Sets up his class so it's hard to do poorly. Grade is based on many things so it's ok if you don't do too well on 1 assignment. Random quizzes so do the readings. There's a textbook but not needed if you understand lecture contents. Cracks cheesy dad jokes but they lighten the mood. Lecture heavy, not the best for daydreamers. Accessible and kind!
Long is more devoted to his students' success than any other professor I have had. Very kind and a lot of dad humor.
Dr. Long is an engaging lecturer and the absolute champ of dad jokes. He's also pretty amenable to meet outside class. His assignments are fascinating - article critiques, debates, and nuclear policy simulations. I'd also add "Get Ready to Read" and advise against skipping class, if only because his classes are really interesting.
Your homework is to read like three articles a week and potentially have a quiz over them (they are easy if you actually read), you write like 2 or 3 papers that arent too bad (responding to the readings...so READ), you have a debate and a policy memo which he grades fairly lightly. Great professor and really really organized and funny. Take him!!!
Prof. Long is an excellent professor! I had Prof. Long two classes in a row this semester in the morning and I can say I was never bored of either of his classes. His friendly banter and love for teaching go a long way and his genuine care for his students is unlike anything I have ever seen. He is an amazing Prof. and an awesome person. Take Him!
This overview of Prof Long is extremely accurate (all the reviews on RMP). He is an extremely kind human and is very accessible outside of class, Prof Long genuinely wants his students to do well. however, his lectures can get a bit boring and long but he tries to make them engaging with dad jokes.
Definitely learned a lot of interesting things in this class. Lots of very dense reading due weekly, but he is understanding about how much time people can put into the course. Lectures are intriguing but often instead driven by participation. There are 3 papers that are reasonably sized and reasonably graded. Hi Dr. Long.
Dr. Long is nice, funny, and helpful. Some of his grading can be confusing but if you put in the work you will do well in the class. Fine to do bad on one thing, will still do well in the class. Readings due every week but usually pretty short. Not really any discussion but two group projects. Interesting class, great guy! Would recommend.
I'm happy to be Dr. Long's 100th reviewer on RMP! He has been one of my favorite professors at UR. The key to doing well in his class is being able to map out the stories, or causal chains, described in the course, so take detailed notes on paper during his lectures! There were essays, exams, and group projects. Highly recommend!
Really great professor, definitely gives students every chance to succeed. Course is very lecture heavy but the content is interesting. Reading quizzes are extremely easy even if you just skimmed the readings and half the time he'll basically tell you when they're going to be.
Prof. Long is a great guy who genuinely cares about his students' success. His lectures can be dry at times, but he offsets it with dad humor. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of the readings. unstuck AI was a lifesaver for me in this class!
Very funny professor but very lecture heavy class. Lots of assignments outside of class but very doable and he doesn't grade harshly. It is not hard to succeed in this class. Definitely take this class.
Dr. Long was great! His lectures tended to get a bit dry at times, but still made it a great class and he is a very caring professor who wants his students to do well. Exams are kind of hard to study for because there's so much material, but he does offer review sessions and other parts of the grade are weighted fairly enough to offset it.
Dr. Long is quite hilarious and down to earth! His lecture slides are prompt and informative, albeit a bit boring sometimes. Super responsive outside of class. It's okay if you submit some things a little late or you have accommodations -- he just wants to help. Only issue with this class is actually the students who are not as passionate as prof.
Great professor, very knowledgeable. His lectures are great and he'll give you a good amount of reading to do to reinforce the knowledge gained in class. His class is probably one of my favorite poli sci classes I've taken. Very helpful/accessible outside of class too, and provides review sessions before the midterm and final exams.
Dr. Long is great! His FYS course is extremely interesting, and his lectures are fun and engaging even when the topic is very heavy. Totally will be taking him again!
Very engaging professor. Prof. Long is accessible outside of class for help with papers or other general academic advice. Be prepared to participate in weekly topics.
Amazing FYS. Readings can be very long and tedious, but some topics are very interesting and Dr. Long does a great job facilitating conversation. 3 short papers and hes a very chill grader. Also very understanding about deadlines and willing to work with students to help in any capacity. Overall extremely nice prof and engaging personality. 10/10
Professor Long is an amazing professor overall. I genuinely have no critiques about his class. Very helpful both outside and inside the classroom. He is a very knowledgeable and charismatic individual and I could not recommend his FYS enough. The class is overall very easy as long as you put in some effort.
