I'm taking him for liberal arts chemistry online and not sure what to think. The class just started, I'm new to online classes as well. Anyone have more info, please reply here.
weekly quiz with alot of equations. Moderate studying and I received a B. Overall, a fair and good professor and fairly easy course.
Took for online Chemistry. It was very easy and he is willing to help in anyway. Make sure to do the practice work sheets that he gives you.
I wish he wrote the text book. His notes are very clear. His practice assignments help alot. The best professor for an online class.
The professor was not helpful at all, anytime you ask for help and tell him that you don't understand he stated that just read the book. If you don't undrstand it how is reading the book going to help. I would not recommend that you take this class unless you don't mind doing on thing on yuour own.
He is hard to understand. He doesn't make things clear. It was a lot of work since, you had to know everything from the begining to the end throughout the whole course. I took this course in the classroom and i recommend taking another teacher.
He looks nuts, and from outer world, nut his class was interesting, he knows a lot and teach you a lot. If you have little previous chem it will be easy class for you. Lot of calculations and conversions. Overall he is a cool guy.
this was supposed to be an intro to chem but was nothing like that.dont take this guy in classroom,he doesnt cover all material on exams and doesnt help in labs. i had to constantly get help from tutors to survive this class.he says you should be able to read bk & know material.
I learned so much about Chemistry in this class. You definitely work for your grade but the instructor is undersatnding. Grade is based on quizzes and tests.
Avoid at all costs. Not helpful. Unnecessarily hard equations on quizes and tests. Can't be bothered to use punctuation and capitalization if he responds to questions on bulletin board.

!!!AVOID!!! I am taking this class online. The prof. is a self important jerk who can't be bothered to respond to emails or grade tests in a timely manner. Not at all helpful. Tests and quizzes are extremely difficult, discussion board requirements ridiculous. Not what you would expect for an on-line chem class for liberal arts majors! Awful.
He has provided me with the worst online course that I have ever taken in my life. He provides not assistance and his grading methodology is way to subjective. He has been gone for a cumulative amount of approximately half the class now, and has yet to reply to ANY e-mails. I personally feel this was a waste of my money and I DO NOT recommend him.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. The teacher does not help you out on anything. He may read your emails but he never responds to them. I have not been able to communicate with him this entire semester. He has been gone about half of the semester. NEVER take this class unless you want to waste your money and not learn anything.
I don't believe this is the typical "Chemistry for Liberal Arts" class. LOTS of math! Many many equations. Online course provides sufficient time for quizzes/tests. If you really apply yourself an A or B is achievable, however, I don't feel that I've learned as much as I thought I would. Does not respond to emails as well as he should.
Minus the unforseen heath problems I would say that this professor is VERY knowledgable. This semester the problem was communication. Would I take him again? I don't know. Would I recommend him? only if you are prepared to WORK for your grade. This is not a give me grade. I think he would be outstanding to have in person just not perhaps online.
Dr. Lucas has done a commendable job especially given that this is an online class that can typically be challenging for students. This has been only my third online class and thus far the most rewarding. Two enthusiastic Thumbs Up, Dr. Lucas!! Keep up the good work.
gives worksheets to work on through out the semester. Quizzes can be on anything at any time not just the week's material. Unless you have a strong background in math and science - would not recommend.
i have always had a hard time with chemistry because i have to remember everything about the course from the beginning. the teacher responded well to my emails, he is very fair and reminds us to constantly study. i have gotten distracted and often slide away. i probably would have done better with his face-to-face class instead of online.
He is a good prof, Chemistry is a hard course, so you just have to study all the time , I took it online and didnt have a problem at all, He is always willing to help!! Take him you will be fine
Don't waste your money, you will teach yourself everything. When you ask for help this prof tells you to look at the book or read the notes, neither of these help very much. Labs are done on your own too, he says OK do your lab! What a joke! Pick anohter teacher you'll be better off.
He doesnt help, ask a question he flies through it on the board, he tells you to just read your book and that answeres all the questions. The labs are not so bad but thats it, the rest of the class is up to you to ask ?'s he has no lesson plans. The tests are 4hours and HARD. all conversions and its hard to do on your own. Take someone else.
He is the absolute worst. Do not take him NO MATTER WHAT!!! He is rude, stuck in the 1980's and completely stuck on himself. His labs are disorganized. His lecture is non-existent (so are his manners). Choose anyone besides Lucas!
Stay away, this teacher is a self centered jerk who should not be allowed to even get paid for being a teacher. He belittles his students. I learned more about the Xmen in class,he never answers emails, does not even tell you if he recieved your work and gives no help. I did get a B so I am not saying this due to a bad grade. Use money elsewhere.
excellent teacher. makes you work hard, but i learned so much chemistry than in high school. the book is hard to understand sometimes, but he clears it up with online lectures, emails, and personal meetings, even on weekends or at mcdonalds.
i have read the comments of my classmates from last summer. to be honest, they are being very unfair. the course was designed as a hybrid class, meeting for labs but mostly online in blackboard. dr. lucas ensured that 2 extra hours were devoted to problem solving and questions. most of the no one brought problems and just wanted to be let out early
This professor simply tells you to read the text. He is an extremely difficult teacher to learn from.
You guys are crazy! I loved Dr. Lukacs! He knows his stuff like the back of his hand, so you definitely cannot B.S. your way through assignments. He's very funny and good-natured. I got a B, but easily could've gotten an A if I actually read the textbook! :-P
Extremely hard course to take on-line, unless you are a chem wizard! I spent over 20hrs weekly studying, rec'd an A but worked my buns off for it! Not completely happy with communication with this professor, took almost a week to answer one of my emails and by then we had taken a quiz on that material. You are on your own with this professor!
Dr. Lucas is very slow to respond to questions or emails. This is a very difficult course for Chemistry of Liberal Arts. He requires endless hours of studying. I found very little help during this course.
He's a very good teacher. I learned a lot in his class! If you need help he will go over it until you do get it! I definitely recommend him. You have to work for your grade, so you can B.S. your way through assignments. Great teachings.
This teacher was by far the best teacher I've ever had. The material is very hard, but he goes out of his way to teach it to you. YOU CANNOT fluff your answers because he knows his stuff like the back of his hand. Definitely would take him again if given the opportunity. =]
GREAT chemistry teacher. Material is very very very hard but he does a GREAT job explaining. Don't expect an easy "A" though, you definitely have to work for your grade...but he helps if you ever have ANY problems. TAKE him.
Dr. Lukacs was a really great teacher. The labs are a lot of fun, and he really does a good job explaining the material. You cannot "cheese" your way through the course. You have to work for your grade, but I definitely would recommend him. =)
for a hybrid class it might as well have been straight up online. there are only 3 tests they're very hard only can do 1 question at a time and cannot go back to make changes. the guy is cool and funny but covers very little material 1-1.5 hours out of a 4 hour class then lets you go home. would not recommend
Had to hire a tutor to help me on all my tests. very difficult and would not reccommend taking hybrid. covers sometimes three chapters in a week to meet only for two hours of class and not enough time to cover all material
I had never taken chem before him, and I know as much now as I did before I took it! I studied my butt off for this class, and went above and beyond the homework, and I still got a C. He is a nice guy, but not a good teacher. I basically taught myself this material, which isn't right. I payed for a teacher, I shouldn't have had to teach myself!!
For all the negative comments about this professor, you were probably expecting an easy A. Chemistry is not easy to begin with. the professor taught material very well with the amount of time given. Most people didnt even bring questions they just wanted to leave early. Chem is hard but hes a good prof.
No one expects an easy A. Truth is professor may work better for students with strong Science and Math background if this is not you,DO NOT take this prof. I dropped after 1st week, he's condens when ques asked. Curr with Professor R.Hailey she's excellent & patient. This prof makes material 10x harder than it actally is and enjoys the confusion.
Very good prof. He made chemistry fun and understandable. He focuses heavily on math, but this is to help students do better in the long run. I wish that he taught other chemistry classes! I would take him again in a heartbeat!
DR. LUCAS WAS A VERY FUNNY PROFESSOR AND MADE THE CLASS ENJOYABLE. HIS TEACHING STYLE IS JUST NOT WHAT I WOULD HAD PREFERRED. HE RELYS HEAVILY ON THE TEXT AND FIGURING EQUATIONS ON YOUR OWN. I HAD A TUTOR AND STUDIED MY BUTT OFF AND STILL MADE A C IN HIS CLASS. I WOULD RECOMMEND ANOTHER PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT A BETTER GRADE AND TEACHING STYLE.
When asked a question, he asks if you read the book. Very unclear and patronizing. Stay away from him if you want to learn anything about Chemistry. However, if you already know a lot about chemistry, take this class. It is completely self study. You are on your own. You can do just as well to study the book and take the CLEP test.
To the comment below me, DUH you learned it on your own! Its called a HYBRID class for a reason. The prof would lecture the material and the next week NOBODY would ask questions.Seriously, be FAIR if you are going to rate him!
He's very nice and funny but if you dont have a strong science and math background you will not pass. he answers ???'s w/???'s. Makes things harder than they have to be. Teaches like you should know it already. Wouldn't recommend unless you really already know the material. I didn't learn anything.
Hybrid class.Very nice made learning material easy. Will not return emails or phone calls. Very easy to talk to and will answer questions fully if asked.Would take him again, just wish he would communicate outside of class time.Which he does not.
Dr. Lukacs is an excellant professor. The course work is not easy and requires a lot of studying from the student. He is open to questions and explains the work clearly. In order to do well in this class, you must attend class, pay attention and study. You will not get an easy A, you must earn it.
"&". you know what; this professor is awesome knowledgeable, ready to answer any types of questions. He knows the chemistry material very well, and the methodology he used to make the most difficult course [ Chemistry instrumentation]worth noting.Student presentations made sense of the course. Take this professor if you really need to learn( A+)
Great professor, who lots to teach in the little time availible, so make sure you come to class fully prepare (that includes the first day of class). I learned lots about PChem, and I hope I make it throught to the second half. The software we used during class was very difficult, so don't procrastinate on hw and test asssignments.Gook Luck--- :)
Great teacher in knowledge of how chemistry instruments are used and how they work in the real world.
This course was extremely hard for me. I recommend this class be taken, but not online unless you have had some prior chemistry.
This was an extremely hard class and was very time consuming. I do not recommend taking with other hard classes, but it has been rewarding. Dr. Lucas is a really good professor but he will not do the work for you. The class is hard but you will learn a lot from it.

Dr. Lucas is a really good professor but he will not do the work for you. The class is hard but you will learn a lot from it and you will be amazed at the stuff you know when you're done.
Dr Lucas is an OUTSTANDING professor. If you need this class for Biomed don't cop out and take Russo. You will learn so much more in Lucas' class. There is a VERY HEAVY workload. Don't take with more than 1 other lab course. Make sure you have completed ALL PREREQUISITE courses. You will be LOST if you don't. Otherwise study hard and you'll be fine
Great professor. Not easy. will make you learn or you will not pass.
I can say that I really didn't enjoy this class being the fact of the matter is, he wasn't really helpful. he didn't really try to explain much to the class it was much of you are self teaching yourself everything. now I will say some of his lecture videos were helpful but at the most I feel he be all over the place and it can really throw you off.
One of the best teachers I've had in my first year of college. You have to work hard for your grade but that's what learning is all about. He's a fun teacher, he's there when you need help and I love how he relates our discusssion into real life. Come to his class and get out of it with learnings not just about Chemistry but about real life as well.
if you are able to teach yourself then this is the class for you. if you need a little more guidance than find different professor. this professor is a strong believer in knowledge. keyword to know about this class is hybrid that's what it means you will do all of the lectures on your own.

you will do all of the lectures on your own work hard be aggressive.
work hard be aggressive.
be aggressive.
This professor is very passionate about what he does. He does expect for you to know it as if it were him. If you can teach your self with lectures along this is the teacher for you. If not go elsewhere.
Great guy, however, I find the class to be tougher than most of college classes I've taken. Most of it is self-teaching. Make sure you listen to the podcasts. Lots of labs. When there's extra credit, take it. Study as much as you can for the tests and quizzes. If you don't understand something, ask him. Follow directions and you'll be okay.
I needed an A in his class to get into nursing school. He made me work for it. I asked a lot of questions and visited him alot. I don't think anyone else worked in the small class I was in. I think I was the only one to pass. I got an A anyway.
I took this class because I needed it for pharmacy school, and I don't regret taking this class with professor Lucas. he is wonderful, smart, helpful, and he answers all of our questions. I recommend him.
He makes chemistry easier to understand with his podcast but if you do not watch them and do not ask questions you will fail.
He has lectures on an online podcast, allowing you to watch more than once and pause for slow learners. He was enthused and if he sees your are trying to understand he is lenient with the grading. best practice problems are in the book, which you must find. Only grades were 13 labs, 2 tests, 4 quizzes, 4 bingos. Appreciated his teaching.
This class was one of the most difficult courses I've taken. Dr Lukacs has a very clear idea of the work he wants to see from you. Watch the podcasts, and go to him with any questions BEFORE you complete your lab reports. Passing this class will not come easy, but he encourages seeking guidance when unsure and is helpful. Be prepared to work!
He's very specific with what he expects from you but is willing to answer questions. His online lectures are very good, but you will have to take good notes and study. You will have to read your textbook. You will have lots of labs, but if you need help he gets you back on track. Great prof.
This class is a toughy, even if you have had chemistry before. Participation is KEY, ask questions and engage. If you show you care about your grade and practice practice paractice youll do fine. Quizzes are the hardest thing youll face, but they pretty much depict exactly what the test is like. WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING DURRING LECTURES.
Dr. Lucas was a solid choice. The online lectures and podcasts are very thorough and the majority of the tests and quizzes comes from that material. You should definitely read the chapters and do the practice tests in the back of the chapters. I worked very hard for my A probably investing 4+ hours per week into this class at home.
Dr. Lucas is a tough professor, but in the best way. He explains everything very thoroughly, but expects you to remember everything he says in order to do well on tests. He gave us 4 take home tests (that were tough), but helped you anytime you needed it. One lab practical exam and a number of formal lab reports. He is very particular, but great!
He is a forgiving grader. Studying is required and a lot of it. The course is straight forward and as long as you study and listen to lectures, and practice you will have no issues.
I wish I would not have taking this professor, I did not learn anything. He does not help. He will answer a question in the most confusing way possible and then spend the next 30 minutes wasting your time leaving you worse off then before you asked the question. The podcasts are useless and outdated.
The class is alright with this professor. He provides pretty good lectures through his own website that help you to better understand the information after reading the chapters in the textbook. You really have to work hard for the grade as he warns you at the beginning of the class. He can be a bit aggressive at times but I think he means well.
One thing I like about professor Lukas is, the confidence he has on his subject which means he has enough knowledge what he teaches about. I found out that he is well prepared. That is as a student the most important thing for me beside anything. He is also friendly and humble person.
Dr. Lucas is incredibly smart. He knows what he is doing not only in science but also in teaching. Passing his class is simple, work hard, study hard, and you will get a good grade. He makes this very clear. If you try to work out a problem and get the answer wrong, you will receive a lot of credit for trying. His grading is forgiving. Show work.
This professor cares about his students passing!
Dr. Lucas is a great professor! He make the class fun and enjoyable. Also, he is very smart and passionate about his students!
Hilarious and passionate about his work!
Please don't fall for these good reviews he is awful. He helped some students and not others. He is not funny at all I really do not know what these people are talking about. he is sarcastic and make jokes about stuff he shouldn't and plus he is very unprofessional and would literally leave you standing talking to him.
I just dropped this class and I wanted to just say that in class he expects you to know everything and if you have a question then know the background of the question. It is all self learning and he doesn't explain anything at all. If you are required this class for your degree and are a visual learner then don't take this class.
Dr. Lukacs gives you everything required to pass his course except he cannot give you the work ethic. My Grade in this class is not a reflection of his teaching but a reflection of my work ethic and willingness to strive towards an understanding of the material.
Dr Lucas is a great professor. He doesn't give out grades, you have to earn them. He grades fairly, especially when he sees that you put the effort. He is a no BS tough love professor but you need that. The discussions in class get funny and interesting. The work is easy, but putting in the effort is what's hard. Take him.
CHM 1025C and CHM 2045C The only way you will pass his class is if you take the time to learn the material. If you want to graduate knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that you gained an understanding chemistry. Then I fully recommend having Dr. Lukacs as a chemistry professor.
expects you to work on Chemistry every day. He provides no study guides at all. If you ask him a question, like what do I need to study for the test he will simply reply, study everything. So you really need to study everything. Do not be fooled by these reviews=extra credit, he is nice but this is a very hard course. you will teach yourself.
Prepare to put in 3000 hours for this class, Literally. You have to study so much you'll neglect your other classes. The best advice I can give is to take notes on the lecture and take heavy notes from the textbook. Asking for help is pointless he just says watch the lectures. invest in a tutor if needed. Good luck!
