This teacher is very funny. Easy to understand and enjoyable class. He keeps a website up for his class which has all the readings and is extremely helpful. If you dont have him as a teacher I feel sorry for you.
it was easy to me because he gave an outline to follow in class everyday on powerpoint. His test are all essays though but he gives you all the possible questions.
Not too bad. Its nice cuz you dont have to buy a book.
He is a great teacher. Attendance isn't required, but if you want to pass, you pretty much have to come. There is no text, so if you miss class, you miss alot of notes. Notes were easy to take...he gives an outline each time. There are required readings, but they are on the web page. He kept me iterested and I don't like history.
Professor Maizlish is a different kind of professor. He has wierd and sometimes annoying pet peeves such as sitting in the last three rows or doing anything other than listening to him. You don't have to biy any books which is nice, but you do need to go to every class to take all the notes. His tests are all short answer and essay.
Prof. Maizlish's lectures are, by far, the best I've ever had. Despite his OCD about filling in the front of the classroom, his talks are coherent and well-planned. Instead of reading *about* history, he has you read the history, filling in the blanks in lecture. Recommended!
Tests were very hard, very picky about essay answers, lectures were interesting though.
you dont need to buy any books, all the reading is on his website. He has a powerpoint of the lectures and his tests arent that bad, its short answer and one essay. The good part is that he gives you the possible essay questions and he picks two. you chose one of the two. His classes are interesting...esp. the music. I highly recommend him.
Love him! His sense of humor is great, he's passionate about his job, and he has a genuine interest in the students. This class (Coming of the Civil War) required about 6 books that you DO have to read - 10 quizzes, and 3 exams (including the final) Attend class, take notes - you'll do fine. His lectures are clear and interesting.
Maizlish is a decent prof, but he is an excellent administrator/advisor. If you are interested in grad school in history at UTA, he is very helpful in making sure that you have everything that you need.
you don't need to buy ANY books. he customizes his lessons. you have to read to literature books, which are available online. he's super funny, go to class everyday and takes notes because everything he says is apart of a test question. he posts the tests questions online, so as long as you take notes your ok. i'd take him again.
Maizlish is a very good prof. If you are interested in the battles of the Civil War, you need to take a military course from Goldberg. But Maizlish is very helpful. A better advisor than a prof.
I bomb the first test, but after that i understood what he was looking for and made an A in the class. Just take good notes and go to the review sessions held by the TA, in which the TA helped us narrow down the topics that were most likely to be on the test and give additional info on lectures. would definitely take again
One of the worst professors I have ever had. The study guides are complete crap. He berates people in class when they ask questions and doesn't always clearly answer them, instead points to the TA for help. The grading on his exams was too rough, writing 3 page essays and continually getting D's even after going to the study sessions.
I thought he was a pretty good professor. He made the lectures interesting adding in music and pictures he had actual taken himself of historic places. Attendance is pretty much mandatory to make a good grade in the class. The tests are pretty hard but the quizzes are easy if you read the materials.
I had Prof. Maizlish many years ago for a course called "History of Protest Songs." I was attending nights, majoring in engineering, and needed any history class. This class happened to fit my night schedule. I tend to be a good student, and, like many classes, found it "easy" if I put in the time to study. Naturally, the class was audio.
Great professor, smart guy, funny, but a freaking monster when test day comes. Test are 80% essay 20% short answers. Study like 2 weeks before the test and you might get an A. Anything that is under 4 pages is pretty much a D or F. Good luck
I took him as a highschool student, I would study the day before for his test and I did quite well on them. Just do the readings and you'll do well on the quizzes.
He's a very good teacher, but it's a challenging class. He post the essay questions on the internet (8 to 10 essays) picks two, you write one. picky though. but a good teacher. i wouldnt take him again because test are too hard. but if my gpa wasnt a factor, i would take him again. interesting
Intersting, nice guy, but hard class. He grades very very specifically (he expects you to read between the lines on the questions he asks on tests). He gives you 7 essay?s to study, puts 2 on the test and you write about 1. Lots and lots and lots of reading throughout semester. But nice guy. Study and READ, GO TO CLASS, take notes, youll get an A
Well to begin with, he's a mannerable, nice old guy...not particularly funny when it comes to the humor department. He grades HARD. his quizzes are real easy if you read the material, but they are not the pinnacle of his class, his exams are 80% essay and 20% multiple choice. He posts 8-10 essay questions, picks 2 of the 8 and you have to write on 1
Very interesting class. No textbook, so attendance is absolutely neccessary. Grade consists mainly of 3 midterms (all of which are essay) and I was quite shocked when I got a C on the 1st one. For the 2nd, I studied like crazy, went over my study guide with Maizlish, and got an A+. Final was comprehensive, mixed up some details, ended with a B.
HORRIBLE AVOID THIS MAN!
His quizes are mostly on the out of class readings!
Great class for students interested in History. Attending class is MANDATORY! Do not by the book, class based on lecture. Take good notes, visit with the TA's and you'll do fine. Exams are all essay
Fairly easy class but if you want to make a good grade attendance is crucial. Midterms consist of only essays.
Im not sure if it's Maizlish or his teaching asst.'s you should dread. A little hint for anyone taking this class, for the essay write EVERYTHING ever said about the subject. Then you may get a C average. Maybe its just me but I believe history should not be graded by a subjective grading system using essay's. Find a class with multiple choice.
the tests are all essays, there are 2 midterms, and a final. I dont mind them being essays, but to me, i dont think that in a history class the tests should be essays. there are review sessions every Friday for the quizzes which are helpful. He's not a bad prof but honestly, if you have a choice between him and someone else, i wouldn't choose him.
Quizzes are tricky, the essays are a joke, and the "required reading" is too much. 50 minutes to write at least three pages for the essay (not including the short answer questions before that). The format is completely wrong for history, let alone a class of 300 people. He and the grad students are very subjective/selective with the essays. Avoid!
The class was fun. I liked the way he explained the topic. Plus I didn't need to buy a texbook and he supplied all the scantrons and blue books. However, when it came to the essays he was very difficult to please.
Testing style (Essay question tests) set up for upper division class not the basic US History which this class was. prof and TA's were very subjective and hard on tests, to the point that forgetting to state one fact out of ten or fifteen will drop you to a C.
Challenging course for sure. Long lists of possible essays for exams will keep you up studying. Got a C with minimal effort. Could have done better if I studied.
I liked his class. His tests were not very easy and I got surprised by the first one. I like his unbiased, relevant, and realistic perspective on history. He has probably been one of the best professors I have had as far as communication skills. Good class if you want to learn; bad class if you are looking to check the box next to HIST 1311.
Really enjoyed him. He was a pretty funny professor. His quizzes were pretty easy and tests were moderately difficult. Don't get to caught up in memorizing every little detail in the 2 books you read, the quizzes ask very simple questions about the characters.
I really enjoy his class. I still have a few weeks left but my first two tests I received As. No essays just multiple choice. I literally write down everything he says though because the readings aren't as important as his lectures. Great teacher
This teacher is awesome! He is funny and witty and explains stuff clearly. One thing though, is that you have to attend class. Because his test are mostly all about the lectures. And another thing, can not bomb a test because that is all he takes for grades. Overall, he's awesome
He is awesome! I highly encourage you take him. His tests are super easy if you attend class. You have to attend class though, or you won't know anything for the exams. He tells you everything you need to know for the tests, which are only 33 questions. One plus is that he doesn't make you buy a textbook. Overall, he is a fantastic professor.
DEFINITELY loved his class! Not only are his outlines excellent and well explained, but he also has a pretty awesome sense of humor! He gives study guides & review sessions prior to exams and his test are multiple choice as long as you don't miss any. I came out of that class with so much knowledge. Doesn't get any better than that!
This man is awesome. I knew him personally, and would have conversations with him before class. His class is almost entirely lecture based, and he didn't require any reading but some readings that could be found online. I wish he taught 1312!!
Always seem to keep lectures fresh and interesting. Extremely helpful. Definitely not your average professor. Wish he could teach Hist 1312 :( Though lecture-based, you gotta read to make an A. I never read and I make solid B's. That's how easy his class is. :D
He was a funny teacher and very helpful. Always made time for to meet with his students and made sure to keep you aware of upcoming class event such as tests and review meetings. GREAT TEACHER wish he taught 1312
Really funny. Extremely helpful. If you miss class make sure you get the notes from someone else and then ask the professor if yall can meet. Easy A if you go to class do the readings.
He's one of my favorite professors, probably helps that I'm a fan of history. He doesn't require you buy any books but material is mostly over the lectures. If you miss class you have to get the notes from someone else. He provides reviews every Friday and makes himself very available, great sense of humor.
Pretty awesome teacher. Possibly my favorite teacher at the university. His lectures are entertaining, in my opinion. He is always available to help, which is nice if you are confused about something. He is funny and very interesting. He doesn't require a text book and gives you study guides. The tests are like 33 questions. So overall he's great
He is funny & he will help whenever you ask. He goes above & beyond. The only thing I didn't like was reading a book every 2 weeks. You will have a quiz every week on a 1/2 book which is scantron. The tests are all essay. If you are a history major it's good.
By far one of my favorite professors! :) Maizlish's lectures are NEVER boring and he has an excellent sense of humor. The tests are fairly easy and class is actually enjoyable. Maizlish is the best HIST1311 professor in UTA.
A most concerned and helpful professor, with more office hours than any other. Lot of reading, but he is a fun person. Better know how to write - tests are essays.
Gives five exams, which are all multiple choice and very easy. He doesn't require a textbook and he makes his lectures interesting.
He does not take attendance and he does not have pop quizzes. He posts reviews online for every exam, so you don't have to go, but he does not post his PowerPoints online and he does not require you to buy a textbook. Any readings he assigns will be on his website. He has cheesy jokes that make history enjoyable. I would recommend him.
He is fairly easy. Test are multiple choice but you must read the links on his website. It's important to go to class although he doesn't take attendance because his test have lecture note questions. you don't have to buy a book.
Doesn't require a textbook or take attendance & he posts all reviews & required readings, make sure you take good notes bc the tests are over the notes & required readings, however, I have found that on every test there were some questions that had nothing to do with the notes or readings but he geniunely cares about his career & his students!
I loved Professor Maizlish's class! His slideshows are always entertaining and he has a great sense of humor. Basically, if you attend the class and take notes, you're guaranteed to pass. I highly recommend taking his class!
I loved Professor Maizlish! He had a good sence of humor and made most lectures fun. You don't have to buy a text book, he posts all of the reading online. The reading online is definantly a must to pass. He doesn't give quizes or make you write ANY papers. There's just 5 tests that make up your final grade. DEFINANTLY take him!
took him for civil war and reconstruction HEAVY reading 2 quizzes for each book two midterms all essay allows you to make up up to 3 quizzes if miss some
If I could do it again, I would not take this professor! His lectures are very boring. While all his tests are multiple choice, the answer choices may be tricky at times. There are also a lot of readings you have to do. You MUST read them if you want to pass. All in all, don't take him if you're looking for an easy A. Definitely regret it.
Cool guy ALOT of READING we read like 7 books but quizzes are stright forward exams are essay allows make ups up to 2 then points come off dont take this class if you dont like to read and write also has office hours all day pretty much
For US Before Civil War he does not require a textbook, only a few short historical documents to read. The tests are completely from the lecture and documents, and if you take half-decent notes and bother to glance at the documents it's not very difficult. The lectures are interesting, and he is genuinely nice and quite congenial as well.
Maizlish is great. Lectures are a bit boring but everything from the tests comes from lectures and a few short online readings. Doesn't make you buy a textbook and there is no homework or quizzes. The only bad thing about this class is that he really hates electronics, so all notes must be written by hand rather than typed. I would recommend him!
Four tests and a final weigh equally (33 question: A->B easily). NO dropping low grade. That means ALL will be counted which makes finding an A extremely difficult. Test materials come from both lecture and readings. You MUST read ALL to get A. His voice is really hard to hear for me due to his age. I would not take this class again. An AZN want A.
He is a great teacher. No textbook is required. All his test are 33 multiple choice questions. 1/3 of it comes from the online reading and the rest 2/3 come straight from his lecture. He doesnt take attendance but you have to go to class in order to pass. Pay attention and you'll do good. I recommend him :)
I hate history with a passion, BUT I loved this class. Professor Maizlish is an amazing teacher. Definitely take him. 5 tests, 33 multiple choice questions each, no essays! There is no textbook, so attendance is necessary! Any required readings are online. Take his class; you won't regret it!
Prof Maizlish is my favorite professor. This class is super easy if you show up and take good notes. Test are exactly like lecture plus some online reading. There are review sessions led by a TA every week . There are a total of five exams and he has one make up if you are absent . No homework or essays
I love prof Maizlish he's really funny and gives great lectures. You don't have any extra work besides the tests. NO TEXTBOOK. He provides links for all the reading so you don't have to spend money on a book.
By far the best male professor at UTA! He really knows his stuff and is great at communicating it. He is also hilarious which keeps you engaged. He doesn't require a book, and provides you with links to readings that you have to do for the test. 5, 33 question tests no drops. Doesn't like phones or laptops. Definitely would take him again if could.
By far the best male professor at UTA! He really knows his stuff and is great at communicating it. He is also hilarious which keeps you engaged. He is a great professor, he truly cares about his students and is willing to do what it takes to help you pass. The only grades are the tests and he doesn't make you write any essays. I can without a doubt say this is the easiest history class ever.
Have to be in class in order to pass the test. No textbook is required, tests are all based on his lectures. But his lecture is easy to understand.
He is a very nice funny guy, his lectures are easy to understand. Attendance is not mandatory but it really helps attending to class bc his exams are mostly based on lectures.
5 exams, 33 Q's each, can only miss 3 Q's for an A. I was borderline & I got an A on final so he gives an A overall. Can't use phone/laptops, he will call you out. The majority Q's come from lecture & 5-10 Q's are from online readings he provides. He doesn't post notes/grades on B.B. His tests are straight forward & easy. He's funny/rude sometimes.
Easy class, but you need to go to class every day. His tests are completely over his lectures with ties to the books. Need to buy all the books for the quizzes. Hard test grader if you don't include everything from the lecture, so take GOOD notes.
If you're not willing to go to class and take excellent work, don't bother taking this course. He is an amazing professor, but the exams are a little tricky, theres only 33 questions, sometimes there things you have to have search more on outside of class to learn. no book required, and 5 exams make up 100% of your total grade.
Don't buy the textbook he doesn't use it. Only graded by 5 exams, Final is the 5th and worth the same as the others, not cumulative. He can be funny at times. Has review sessions every Friday for an hour to go over the answers to the review questions he posts for the tests. Old fashioned, no electronics he'll call you out. Doesn't use blackboard.
Professor Maizlish presents American history as if you were watching a TV series. Take notes on the lectures, but he will take the time to clarify any points that are confusing. He really goes into detail not just of what happened but the why behind it, helping me put history in perspective.
Go to his review sessions!!! He has 5 tests, all 33 questions. His final is just a regular test. He gives out a review and during his review sessions he gives the answers to it, as long as you know the review you'll do fine on the test. He gives good powerpoint, not online, so you have to go to class. The only thing is he hates electronics.
5 exams is all you got to pass. Your only resources are the in-class lectures (with PowerPoint) and online readings. He was a good professor overall.
Really good professor! Straightforward. Show up, copy slides/take notes, study them, take test. 5 tests your grade. They're all structured the same: mult. choice NO ESSAYS. NO BOOK USED. His PowerPoints aren't online, so need to come to class. Doesn't allow electronic use during class, calls people out on it. Really nice guy though!
Great professor! He really knows what he's talking about and the lectures are always interesting. If you don't like reading, I wouldn't suggest taking his class. Lots of quizzes, 3 exams, all essay exams. The final is cumulative. Does not use blackboard and his powerpoints are not online so you need to come to class to understand whats going on.
Professor Maizlish was one of my favorite professors. He gave GREAT lectures with funny jokes and amazing historical facts. Very good at explaining and was always ready to answer student's questions. Be sure to take good notes, because the exams are based entirely on the lectures, so skipping class would hurt you. Overall a great professor.
Yo for real! fr you have to take him honestly. Make sure you attend class this will help while taking your quizzes! 5 quizzes! the study guide is online! make sure you take notes very essential because all your notes are basically your quiz questions. GO FOR FRIDAY REVIEW SECESSIONS VERY IMPORTANT AND SIT IN FRONT DURING LECTURES!!!!
This is a really easy basic class. Only 5 exams with 33 questions for each. You will need to show up and take notes because he does not post powerpoints but study that and you will definitely pass the class. No essays.
LOVED THIS CLASS! prof maizlish is a great teacher with a true passion for history. He made this class interesting and i loved going to class even though it was @ 10am. Go to class, pay attention, take notes, and you'll be fine. He has weekly reviews which i highly recommend attending, he goes over test questions. only graded based on 5 exams. <3
BEST PROFESSOR! he's funny and blunt loved his lectures, they actually helped me understand. he's really old and is passionate about teaching. he doesn't post lecture ppts online so u have to go to class and take notes. go to review sessions & glance over online reading to prepare for tests. doesn't like u using phones & will call u out in class :)
He teaches History like he is telling a story. He is funny as well! Super helpful when you ask questions. His exams are straightforward and pretty easy if you study your notes do the readings assigned (no textbook for this class, just read the documents he posts). GO TO HIS REVIEW SESSIONS! His review sessions are incredibly helpful!
Going to lectures and taking notes will help you pass Class is easy as long as you pay attention and study for tests.
