Steve is a very enthusiastic teacher. He makes what he is teaching make sense even if it doesn’t have to do with his course in particular. Always willing to help and very friendly. Funny in class, never boring, a great teacher all around.
I have taken every class Steve has taught and would take more if I could. You won't find a better teacher, in any discipline, anywhere
Steve is probably my favourite chemistry professor at UBCO. Lively, funny, and he makes understanding complicated concepts easy. He takes time out of his schedule to help his students whenever he can, and he's very friendly and easy to talk to. Definitely take any classes you can with him.
Great teacher, made the subject interesting, and made you want to learn it. Very good class
Great Professor, nothing more needs to be said
Very good prof!
Really funny, you can tell he loves his profession and honestly wants his students to understand what he's talking about. Definitely one of the best by far
He is by far one of the best profs... his tests are fair, he puts alot of effort in teaching his classes. He will help you if you ever need it, not a 10 second answer, but he will explain it to you until you understand everything. Great!
A great professor. Truly loves every part of his work, and makes every attempt to engage your mind in it. Funny, intelligent, keeps the class as simple as can be without skipping and important topics. Loves going off on interesting tangents that relate to chemistry. Go Steve!
One of my favorite profs. He's very into what he's teaching and is very enthusiastic about chemistry. Always willing to help, and his tests are pretty fair. There is never a dull moment in his class.
Great prof with a great sense of humour, but don't expect a short answer to your question.
LOVED this guy. If there's one person who hates chemistry, it's me, but Steve managed to make classes go by quickly. Very excited about what he teaches. Tends to go off on long tangents with even the simplest of questions, but he was always interesting. If you're taking chemistry, I definitely recommend taking his class!
Steve rocks my socks! Best Chemistry professor ever! Has an awesome sense of humour and was extremely helpful. He was always available after class if students needed help. He has very clear explanations! If you have to rework your schedule to get into his class DO IT!
Best. Prof. Eva.
hilarious, makes class interesting. i feel sorry for people who dont have him as a prof. he makes things very clear and easy to learn. also very understanding.
Steve is one of the best profs I've encountered at university so far. Take the time to get to know him, he's almost always in his office. The class is lots of work but it's always interesting. I would recommend it if you love chemistry.
Hilarious, a bit contrived at times. Quite a character
Dr. McNeil is one of the best chem profs by far! His lectures were entertaining and his tests were really fair. Going to his class was fun, even though it started at 8am. He even came in for a four hour review session with our class the sunday before our final exam. Take his courses if you can!!
Great Prof! has helpful and GOOD notes and very passionate about what he teaches. He tends to get a little hyper during lecture but funny and awesome guy overall! midterms are good if you study and practise your stuff.
there is a reason he won the award for best prof. so enthusiastic and helpful, even at 8am in the morning.
Steve was probably the best prof i had this year; he's funny, interesting, and keeps you captivated. I had no problems getting up at 8 am to go to his class as opposed to some of my other 8 am classes. TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN!!
great prof, great comedian, first and only time I have seen an 8am class on MWF completely full almost always. You want this guy!
Very Good prof. Really funny. I didn't like Chem 121 but he made the class enjoyable. Definitely recommend taking a class with him. Was good at making boring subject material interesting.
Great Prof, Good sense of humour and will make any course interesting and enjoyable!
Awesome, terrific, fun, interesting class. Great prof! Very helpful, really wants students to do well, and very approachable. Don't ever expect a quick answer though (he would talk for hours if time permitted). Also, his notes are always very detailed and accurate, but almost to the point of over confusing people.
I loved this prof!! He was always very enthusiastic and you're in for treat if you're there on halloween!! he made my already favourite class even better
Overall a good teacher! He made a class that starts at 8 in the morning somewhat enjoyable
Yes Steve is entertaining, but I'm also fairly certain that he somehow managed to go a whole semester without giving a single numerical example. He explains concepts really well, which is great if you're already good with chemistry. However, if you struggled in high school, aim for Neelands class, he's wayyyy easier to understand.
He was an awesome Professor, especially for a first year class. Although Chemistry was not my strong suite, he made it my favourite class. McNeil was very nice, making morning class fun and entertaining. You just have to try really hard to pay attention and don't space out during class.
Favorite professor at UBCO so far. Clearly evident why he won the best teacher award.
Great teacher! Lecture notes were wonderful, and the midterms were fair. If you didn't do well in chemistry make sure you attend his class because he thoroughly explains everything. Didn't like chemistry coming into this class, but left with a positive attitude because of Steve. Made morning classes enjoyable, and played music before class :P
A wonderful teacher he showed up to ever CCU review session and explained anything that was asked. Always willing to give extra help. Quizzes were slightly difficult, but Midterms were fair and he taught well. All in all one of the best teachers so far.
Awesome energy. Very very very helpful outside of class. Go see him in his office if you need any clarification he's pretty much always there and LOVES to talk about chemistry. Doesn't do many examples so do practice questions out of the textbook.
Great Prof!! Midterms were relatively easy and fair. Great notes. Funny and engaging. Only 8am lecture that i wasn't falling asleep in. Although the midterms were pretty fair, his final was brutal.
This man is the epitome of excellent, middle-aged teaching. He has a real talent for teaching effectively, especially in his notes. He has tons of little demonstrations that he uses to describe molecular interaction; he had us all running in circles in different bonding patterns. Best prof of the year.
Best prof you will ever have! Never have I seen a prof this passionate about teaching! Makes every class fun and tries to make analogies to everything he teaches. A pleasure to go to class to! Did not have a mandatory textbook, but if you attend class, a textbook is not necessary, he is very clear.
Great prof. Very passionate about the course material. Lectures were sometimes hard to follow but the notes were great and the midterm and final were fair. Not an easy course but definitely not unfair!
Very helpful. He is so passionate about teaching that it makes you understand the material even more :)
WE LOVE MCNEIL!!!!! Chemistry is more or less a soap opera with him, the only interesting soap opera. tests are fast and small but everything is explained wonderfully. one question is easily worth 10min. you will enjoy his lectures. trust me.
He put a lot of effort into his lectures by preparing a lot of iClicker questions, review questions and supplementary documents that go toward helping you understand the material. His exams were fair. As well, his lectures are never boring, and I never felt sleepy for an 8:30am class. I would definitely take a class with him again!
I didn't mind going to my 8:30 am class because of Steve's antics, and walking in to music playing. He's funny and helpful, willingly answers questions. He organizes lectures well and reading the text is hugely beneficial. You do get marks for clicker participation but not right/wrong answers. Group tests for midterms - sooo helpful with grades!
Cannot rave enough about Steve. From day 1, he's been the most accessible and down-to-earth professor I've had. Not only that, but I'd say he's BY FAR the best professor I had in first year. Fantastic lectures jam packed with enthusiasm and very interesting ties to the real-world. It actually feels like he cares for each and every student there.
Great teacher. Hes really passionate about teaching and you can tell. He posts all of his notes online which really helps. He makes lectures interesting.
Intriguing lectures. Difficult exams and lab write-ups. Enthusiastic and real.
THis is a hard class with hard concepts and he piles to work on but otherwise, the most jovial and likeable person on campus. doesn't matter what or why, go to office hours and sit on the nice comfortable periodic table couch.
Amazing prof! Enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable about what he is teaching. The material covered is also super interesting and would highly recommend taking this course even if you are not a chem major! Super accessible outside of class and willing to help with whatever concepts you are struggling with. Overall great class.
There are a few Chem students at UBCO who have failed 220 more than once because this class requires shifting the way you think. If you are a memorizer, this class is not for you because everything you can memorize, Steve just gives you on a data sheet. Don't let bad students deter you from taking this class, its super fun and super easy if you study.
he is a gem and a half.
I enjoyed 220 while finding it quite challenging. He is very accessible but I often found him straying from the question I asked. During the lecture, he usually talks while writing notes, which I personally found hard to follow. Overall great course if you're willing to put in the work.
He has no office hours because he believes he should be accessible to students always- which is amazing! Very passionate about his work and willing to answer any question you have!
I took an 8 AM lecture for this man. I would have taken a 6 AM lecture for him, and maybe a bullet. This man is a gem. Incredibly clear, very funny, genuinely cares about your learning. Protect him at all costs.
Best prof I've ever had no cap
Steve made the 8am lecture worth going to. His notes and lectures are good. I found the tests to be difficult but that was not his fault, it was my own. Such a fantastic professor! Take his class!!
Steve is an amazing professor. Super interesting and makes chemistry fun! I took an 8am lecture for him and was not disappointed! Go to class because he marks for participation. Notes are good and tests are very fair. 100% recommend taking Steve's class if you get the chance!
Best Chemistry prof I've ever had. I went from hating Chem in first year and struggling with the content to thriving in his course. His learning strategies are highly effective and he is always glad to help answer any questions.
GREAT PROFESSOR. He seriously makes class worth going to. His tests are very fair, and I genuinely learned a lot from him. He is 100% the best professor I have ever had.
Steve is such a gem. It was a privilege and an honor to be taught by him. Highly recommend.
Steve is always eager to help students understand concepts, even if he has a million other things going on. I had an unfortunate health episode and missed a lab and he was so kind about it. The lab write ups are difficult and long, and the midterm is HARD (you do need to memorize). Very interesting course , but felt more biology than chemistry.
This guy is absolutely amazing. He was my one and only prof who understood students had other classes. Stayed within his class time-frame, his workload was respectful and manageable. He was very understanding of giving an extension with the whole struggles of the online schooling situation. Lectures weren't mandatory, he recorded. CHOOSE HIM!
A real gem of a professor, his class was the one I looked forward to the most.
Fantastic and very engaging professor! If you can take any class with him please do so!
He's by far the greatest chem prof that I've ever encountered. Highly recommend taking a course with him especially if you aren't confident in your chem skills.
Steve is the best prof I've had. He makes a boring subject engaging and is really passionate about it. His sense of humour and high energy made the class always worth going to. I would 100% recommend taking a class with him if you get the chance. The class was pretty easy and fair if you study. He also has good taste in music so that's cool:p
What a lovely professor. He's funny, caring, really strives to make the course enjoyable and interesting. He's SO enthusiastic and eager to help students outside of class. Midterms were very fair, but the final was a bit of a struggle and the average was pretty low compared to midterms. If you can take his class, do it!! You won't regret it.
I really like McNeil as a person but I don't enjoy his teaching style and prefer Tamara. He talks way too fast and doesn't write very clearly so taking notes was a little difficult at times. He also doesn't explain things very well and I wish he would've dumbed things down a bit. If you're not going to go to class, make sure to log into iClicker.
Professor McNeil is one of the most amazing professors I have ever had. I could write for days on how caring, inspirational, funny, fair, helpful he is. He truly cares for his students and wants them to succeed. The tests were always very fair, and it is the type of class that if you put in decent effort, you will definitely get a good grade.
Stephen's lectures were the highlight of my week. He was funny and a decent teacher. He was very clear about what would be appearing on the exams. One thing I didn't like was the lack of example questions in class, but there were plenty laid out from the textbook which was great. I preferred Tamaras notes, but overall would recommend.
TAKE HIS COURSE! Steve is one of the kindest profs I've had and is so understanding and genuinely wants you to understand. He's super flexible for office hours and he was super helpful when I wanted to go over my midterm. Content is difficult, BUT Steve really helps to break it down and gives lots of opportunities for practice in and out of class.
He was so so nice and his class was super fun to be apart of! He really cares how his students do in his class and makes it clear that he is here to help. If you do go to his office hours (which you should) be warned he might get distracted and talk to you for a while about unrelated topics haha!
Good prof, I just didnt do well in 2nd sem. Had personal problems. If you work hard for this class, you can get above 85% on all midterms (anyone can), the final exam for this class is easier than CHEM 121's final exam imo. Very kind person. Took him in 2022W 2nd sem.
Favourite Prof!
Excellent prof. Dr. McNeil's lectures are incredibly engaging and informative. The pace of the course is really good and all the content builds on itself logically. He's got quite a personality and is very animated, and his notes are fantastic
Stephen is a G. Take this class. He will actually teach you. He's upbeat and provides multiple resources for all different learning styles. The first day of classes man said he knows you'll go out and won't want to come to the lecture at 8am so he records all the meetings on zoom. A real one.
McNeil has super engaging lectures where you actively apply what you're learning. He's very kind, welcoming, and all course content was taught in a timely manner. If you've already taken chemistry before, this course should be easy. My only complaint is that sometimes the music at the beginning of lecture is a little too loud LOL. Steve is amazing!
AMAZING. His lectures are very entertaining and he's always giving out fun examples to understand concepts. He talks a little fast sometimes so it may be hard to catch up but he posts every single thing so you have a lot of flexibility if you didn't catch something. 100% approachable. midterms weren't bad but don't expect the same for the final!
McNeil made 8:00am classes worth it. I'm really grateful that I had him for my first year. Go to office hours if you have any questions, he cares about your understanding.
Steve is the best chemistry prof you can get. As someone who hated chemistry, his lectures made me really enjoy the class and if I can ever get a class with him again I would totally take it. His 8 am lectures were the best!
McNeil is genuinely one of the best profs I've ever had. Not only does he clearly enjoy his job, but he does it in a manner that is not only engaging but informative as well. As someone who struggled with chemistry in high school I was more nervous than most. Fortunately, McNeil is accessible and is willing to help you understand whenever possible.
Dr. McNeil is the best professor. Even though it was an 8AM class, he made the lectures engaging and entertaining. Although the content was difficult, he explained it very well and even did a review session at the end of the term to go over anything we did not understand. Overall a great prof and would definitely recommend!
8am lectures were a bit difficult to wake up and attend, but Professor McNeil made his lectures interesting and always kept students engaged. I enjoyed his more lighthearted teaching style and he had recorded lectures. Various different methods of learning were used during lectures, including hands-on work using simulators.
THIS COURSE IS EXTREMELY COLORBLIND FRIENDLY. This man is the funniest prof I have had so far. He made a really rough 8 am slot and made it enjoyable. He was available outside of class hours and my favorite moments with him were while talking to him outside of class. I dont have to take any more chem classes, but I want to take HIS class on color.
Fantastic prof. Very fair exams and somehow managed to make the 8 am class bearable and entertaining. I strongly recommend his class and would 100% retake it.
Prof. McNeil made 8 am chem so so worth it!! He blasted music before lectures and had an ungodly amount of energy that early in the morning but it made the class fun and easy to pay attention to. Midterms and finals were very predictable and straightforward. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him, do it!
I love Brother McNeil. I took him for SCIED 259 and he was amazing. He was so fun and communicated the information in such a good way that I remember. He has fun with us and cares about his students. You will have to come to class but honestly it is such a fun and a good class. For example, he hide easter eggs for us on Easter weekend. Love him!
Silly professor, definitely sets students up for success. Lectures can be boring and really content heavy sometimes. But if you put enough time in I think the course is an easy A.
I love this guy. I hated AP Chemistry, but taking Chem 121 with him was a delight. He genuinely cares about his students and their questions, even in a class of 300 people. He's always in a good mood and passionate. The TAs are ready to help, and the SL sessions are fantastic. Chemistry is hard, but this class is a great introduction.
Dr.McNeil is the most kind, caring and fun professor ever. There are no words that can describe how exiting his lectures are. Words that approximate him would be kind, caring, fun awesome, ecstatic, efficient, smart. But the only way to truly appreciate him is to take his class, and learn.
Haven't taken the final yet but man I don't understand all the positive reviews. He's completely full of himself, has one of the biggest egos I've seen in academia (and that's saying something). Canvas content is good but lectures themselves are disorganized and he's always soapboxing about political issues and has a very manic/scary personality.
Dr. McNeil and his lectures are truly exceptional.
McNeil made learning chemistry so fun. I would 100% take a class with him again if I got the chance.
Mcneil's lectures are very engaging and make learning chem interesting and a lot easier. He's very helpful when answering questions in class, and provides in depth explanations of iclicker answers. His midterms and final follow the content closely, and the SL review sheets are very accurate to the tests. Would 100% take another course with him.
Absolutely fantastic prof, my favourite by far. I'm a first year organic chem major and he explained everything super well, was easy to contact and was extremely approachable. Super funny and helpful lectures, good notes and worksheets, and is by miles the best teacher/prof I have ever had. Would absolutely recommend trying to get him for Chem 121.
