If you take Nicar get ready to teach yourself all the material. Lectures are very confusing and very boring. The hour and a half lecture felt longer than my 3 hour night class. He obviously doesn't have much passion for his job. I took his intro microeconomics class so maybe he can explain things better in his upper-level courses, honestly not sure
I am genuinely curious as to how this guy got hired as a professor. He is not good at teaching. Very shy and timid, and does not explain things very well at all. His lectures are extremely boring and not much benefit to your learning of the material. He makes the exams very tough, and intentionally tricks you up with questions on there. Avoid him!
Although this class was fairly hard, if you read the material, go to class, finish the homework (he's an easy homework grader), and do some independent practice work then you will receive a pretty good grade. He gives a lot of practice problems which are a lot like the tests and if you read/take notes then the multiple choice is super easy.
I took him last year for both macro and micro econ, decided to leave a review after I saw these awful ones he received from others. I don't know what they're talking about, he explains things excellently and the tests are verbatim the study guides. These other people may just be blaming him for their lack of effort they put into the class...
GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He notices and rewards those who put in the work and go to class. The only reason I passed this class was because Nicar curved my final. He reads from the powerpoint and his voice will put you to sleep. Study guides are provided before exams but aren't always that helpful. I would try to get another teacher if possible.
Legit drier than a stale piece of bread. No personality, arrogant and thinks that he is smarter and better than you. Overall the class isnt terrible if you get ready to teach yourself and avoid him at all cost
He is a really nice guy and cares about the class knowing the information. Homework is half of your grade and you get two attempts. He gives you practice questions before the tests that are very similar to the tests.
This class wasnt too bad if you study for the exams and utilize the office hours, you should do fine. He uses practice exams for each chapter as an assignment grade and reuses many of these questions on the exam (only 4 exams) He usually ends class early, which are long boring lectures, and cancels class every couple of weeks, which is very nice.
He's hard to follow in lectures unless you are super dialed in. Homework is open internet and you get a second attempt. Tests are hard. He's a fair grader and gives a 10 point curve to every test.
The most dry human ever. Arrogant and not kind to students. You will be teaching yourself all the information because, if you aren't in the front row, you wont hear him, but you'll tune out either way. Never again
currently have an A- in this class, only reason I rated it a 3 difficulty out of 2 is because I'm bad at Econ. From what I've heard, this is probably the best professor to have out of all the other macro professors. He is very knowledgeable and has lots of experience. Read the textbook BEFORE the lectures. Overall a nice guy who cancels class often
Most boring class I have ever taken, lazy and just reads off the powerpoint leaving you to learn everything on your own. Never gives you chance to ask questions or talk, if you are a robot this is the class for you.
It is absolutely outrageous that he does +s and -s. A 90 in this class is the equivalent of a 99 in any other class. Hands down the worst professor Ive ever had - does not give literally a single A, gives extremely unclear feedback, office hours are no help, tests are insanely hard and no amount of all-nighters will help. Good luck
Prof Nicar is dry. But if you have a basic knowledge of Macro before stepping into the class, you will find his lectures interesting and they will will make sense. He cancelled class often and let us out early. Tests were all multiple choice and the exact same as the practice tests he gave us. If you do the work, you will be just fine.
The lectures are a little dull and probably not mandatory, although I would recommend attending them. Overall, I think Prof Nicar is a pretty good professor.
Had Stephen Nicar for International Monetary Economics. I found that just listening to the lectures and going back later to take notes on the slides helps a lot. If you are not interested in the subject, don't take it! Was interesting taking this class and relating the class material we spoke on in real time with the Russian situation.
Only three exams and one final will be graded. Extremely boring lectures but a very knowledgeable professor. All exams are in person. There are better and easier professors that can be taken.
Pay attention in class and study for the tests and you'll do good. He also has office hours.
Professor Nicar is a super nice guy, but his lectures are just so dull and monotone. It is so hard to stay awake if you are actually paying attention. He has a lot of tests and they are hard, so make sure you study. All of the PowerPoints are posted on d2l, so attendance is not mandatory, but can be helpful. I would not take his class again.
I seriously could not tell you one thing I learned from this course. Dude rambles the entire time and is very monotone and soft spoken. Can barely hear him. Thank god he was an easy grader, any competent professor would've failed me, but because he's such a bad teacher if he graded hard, everyone would fail. avoid at all costs
Although he does read off the PowerPoints, you will always be prepared for tests because he posts practice problems that relate to the test. If you study what is on the practice tests you will do good. Nice guy, just boring lectures, but you will be successful in the class if you review the practice tests and quizzes.
Lectures can be kind of boring, but economics is hard to make entertaining. He is very knowledgeable and is really good at answering every question that is asked and explaining things thoroughly. Super sweet guy and gives good study resources.
If you attend class (especially Friday) and actively listen you will do well in his class. BUT it's very hard to listen to his lectures because he talks in such a low monotone voice and doesn't engage his students at all. READ the textbook!! There are 3 exams (He drops your lowest score), a few homework quizzes (DO WELL ON THESE) and a final exam.
I took this teacher this year because it was the only Macro class I could get into. Do not take his class. I attended almost every single lecture and left everyday feeling like I did not learn a single thing. We do no practice work in class and the tests are so difficult.
Professor Nicar's lectures are very boring and he is not enthusiastic about anything. This was my first time taking macroeconomics and I essentially had to teach myself the material. His tests are very hard and you need to study a lot. He purposely tries to trip you up on tests.
Prof. Nicar's lectures are boring and sometimes fast, but he posts the slides afterwords to look back on. Leading up to exams he would post practice tests, and each test always had problems from the practice tests. Overall, if you do the practice problems, study the slides, and go to class, you will do well because the class isn't very difficult.
He had very boring lectures which makes it difficult to stay attentive. He does not interact with students at all. His tests are difficult but he drops your lowest grade which is nice
Horrible. Do not take. He mumbles and speaks so quietly that you can not understand what he is even saying. He also does not care about his students. Even though he does drop ur lowest test grade, his tests are hard. Very hard class with a professor who does not care at all how his students are doing. Do not take.
This class was just flat out boring. I think you can make Econ fun, but he reads a lot off of the slides and it is hard to pay attention during class. There is homework, but very sporadically and it would be more helpful if it was more often. Never quite sure what the test is gonna be like, and there are definitely easier professors to take at TCU.
He is understanding and wants you to do well. He doesnt really give homework, and give 3 test. He drops your lowest grade which is great. If you do decent on the test you can get an A. But definitely not easy. Go to office hours from the beginning if you want to do well.
Starting with the good, he does drop your lowest major grade. The bad is that he has extremely boring lectures and is extremely softspoken. Lectures are also extremely confusing, and he teaches at an extremely high level for an intro class. Tests are extremely difficult. I normally do well in school, and never got higher than an 80 on a test.
He was so boring. I went to his office hours and he just laughed at me and my friend. He gets upset easily and his tests are hard.
This class was very difficult. His lectures are long and boring, and his notes are hard to follow. His tests are insanely difficult. He drops your lowest test grade and gives practice problems leading up to the tests which is very helpful. If you don't study you will fail. Overall, you have to put the work in to get a good grade in this class.
So hard, do not take this class.
I thought it was going to be a hard class but the tests he gives are not very hard and the quizzes are free 100s. He's pretty soft spoken so sit near the front and if you listen in class youll be fine.
Wouldn't recommend taking this class at all, his lectures are all over the place, super hard to follow and don't make any sense. His test are extremely hard even if you think you know what your doing. Only take this class if its your last option
This was the hardest class I took at TCU. This professor's tests are all extremely challenging. I would not recommend this teacher to anyone unless it's your last option for earning credit. The only positive aspect of the course is that practically no homework is assigned. He uses very advanced vocabulary during lectures. FIND A NEW PROFESSOR!!
Honestly all the tests I had to do was study on my own and read the textbook over and over again. He doesn't do a good job explaining stuff and makes the tests extremely difficult. Only good thing was one exam got dropped. I learned more on my own through the textbook, than I felt in class because he would go too fast and didn't explain.
Absolutely the worst teacher at TCU. Doesn't care at all about his students. Barely teaches and gets made if you ask questions during his lectures. Tests are extremely difficult and need to study a lot. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
This professor might be the worst at the school; his tests are nearly impossible. No matter how much you think you know, you likely know less, He hates his students, and if you try and go in for office hours, he won't even help you. Do not take this class; if you are looking at the reviews now, transfer out when you still can.
Every time I walked to his class, I would close my eyes crossing Stadium Dr, hoping something would happen to save me from attending. Listening to him is incredibly stressful because he uses an extremely advanced vocabulary that's hard to follow, you'll have to read the book a lot because it would be the actual professor. Tests are EXTREMELY HARD
I want to start by saying, that this class is supposed to be an "introductory to Mac class", but this teacher makes it seem like it's intermediate Macro. His lectures really don't make any sense, and I learned more from the textbook rather than from him. His interactions with students are also very rude and uncaring. I don't recommend taking him.
Tests are incredibly difficult and he's not willing to help you in or out of class. Very lecture heavy, and he's monotone & hard to listen to. Do NOT take. I worked very hard in his class and it ended up being my only B, dropping my GPA.
The exams were very important and there is not much else to be graded on. The only hw is a few assignments where you get two attempts and the grade is the average. The exams have short answer and calculation questions with partial credit. They are difficult but he gives study guides but it can be overwhelming with the material. Def get the textbook
Do not take this class. Its impossible to get an A and he is a super mean teacher
He drops the lowest exam which is super clutch. His content is hard and his lectures move quick. However, he teaches the content in a good way that is initially frustrating, but eventually makes sense.
Had him for Int'l Monetary Econ. He is a good professor, willing to help during and after class. He does speak quietly, but overall understanding.
If you have the misfortune to take this instructor do yourself a favor and buy the textbook as it will be more helpful than anything explained in class The lectures are monotone and quite boring as there were no visuals to explain some of the complex topics seen in this course instead the instructor read off a sheet of paper for the semester
Absolutely awful.
He is a tough grader, but the work you put in is the grade you get out. Use office hours and a good grade is 100% possible.
His lectures have nothing to do with the exams. Takes attendance very seriously and is unenthusiastic
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN! He speaks quietly and his lectures do not make any sense. Went in for office hours and he just told me to read the book. This class is way harder than it should be and he is just in general a terrible professor who doesn't care about his students. Attendance mandatory. Exams very difficult. save yourself the headache.
Do NOT take this class. Lectures are monotone and unhelpful. His tests are extremely difficult and include material he never covers, so studying doesn't match the exams. I even went to office hours for hours trying my best, and it still felt like he expects students to do poorly—he even told us our grades would “drastically change” after the test.
Prof. Nicar makes it seem like you know the information in class and then creates the hardest tests and exams possible. Extremely grumpy and rude, does not want to help you. Laptops are not allowed in class, only paper, and he treats questions as funny jokes when students are genuinely confused. Do not take. Please do not take.
Makes the class very difficult, always in a bad mood, and everything that he posts for review for the exam is most likely not on the exam. If you go to office hours he won't answer your questions but he will instead just tell you to figure it out and say that we went over it in class. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Very rude and not helpful. He expects people to already understand everything. He will act like you are ignorant if you are ever confused about something when you ask a question. He gives study guides, but the tests have things that we have not gone over before. Before our last test he assured the class that it would change our grades drastically.
He does not allow laptops for notes. He is not a nice person. He told us that our last test would change our grades drastically. He expects us to fail. He does not seem like he likes his job or wants to be there. Do not take his class.
He is the worst professor I've had. He told us that our test will "drastically change" our grades implying that he designed it to set us up for failure. He is a mean person that will not help. He tells us to ask questions and when we do, he treats us like we are dumb and should already know everything.
Absolutely one of the worst teachers I've ever had in my lifetime, he might be the worst. It's a disgrace that I pay this much for TCU tuition and they hire someone this horrible at his job. Everything he tells you that is gonna be on the test, is different than what's on the test. He gets mad at you for asking for help. Awful person. Disgrace.
I hope he reads this because he actually hurt my feelings so much. I tried so hard in this class. I studied for so long before and went to office hours and everything I could do. What is on the test is not what we learned so you will fail the tests. I genuinely feel like he wants us to do bad so he can rub it in. He wants you to do poorly.
Told our class that our grades would drastically change after the test. Pretty much saying that he was going to give us a test to make us fail showing that he doesn't teach the material well. Seems to hate his job and act likes a toddler when someone ask a genuine question because they are confused. Don't take his class save your self the stress.
Ya he's a tough professor but study, take notes, read the textbook and you'll pass.
Super hard. Speaks quietly. Talks fast. Uses words most people do not know yet. Treats an intro class like everyone knows what to do already. I would not take this class.
Just don't. Avoid at literally all costs
Worst professor. Can barley hear him talk and doesn't explain well. Tests are confusing. Don't take if you want an easy A
Worst teacher I have ever had. such boring lectures that are hard to stay awake for and is so monotone you cant pay attention to him. The tests are so confusing and I could know everything on the study guide inside and out and not do well in the class. Don't take his class
SO boring and rude with the most monotone voice ever. Passed no credited this course. You can only miss 3 classes before your grade drops 10%.
attendance was mandatory, Makes you feel dumb when you ask questions and go to office hours. Exams are very different and much harder then the material given to review for the exam. He almost wants his students to fail. If you understand d the material exams are still tricky.
horrible teacher and horrible person. he hates all of his students, probably hates his life and wants to get back by failing you. all of his exams are nothing that he has taught. he doesn't help you if you are confused and rather gets mad for asking questions. should be fired.
he should be working at mcdonalds play place with how much of a joke he is. absolutely useless person in life and gets mad at you. go get me a 10 piece McNugget
guy is no good, dont take his class. Never helps you when you need it. Had to get a tutor and exams were never like anything he explained.
dude is a absolute joke, wouldn't even consider him a dude to be honest because he wants to fail you. Literally no help and doesn't provide anything.
I just like couldn't even understand what he was saying during lectures. I tried so hard for weeks to lock in during class and take notes but still did horrible on the tests. The study guides and homeworks were 1000 times easier than the test problems, so I felt poorly prepared. do NOT take this class!!
Nicar's class was the first one and only one i had ever failed a test . I did great in econ before and now ive never been more lost than ever. His lectures and teachings do not relate well to the tests at all. he will yell at you. honestly this guy clearly doesnt give two sh** abt your success...pretty sure he wants us to fail. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Cannot explain to you how much I dislike this man. Doesnt matter how hard you work. Study the study guide for days? DOESNT MATTER, nothing like the tests. He wants u to fail because he is bitter and just the worst prof I have ever had, and I have had some super villain teachers.
stay away from this man.
Straight up bad at teaching and RUDE!!!
I hate to come on here and nag about a professor, but he is horrible. PLEASE AND I MEAN PLEASE do not take this class. He threatens to make tests harder and expects you to fail them. He is very intimidating and impatient. He is also rude. PLEASE AVOID
pretty bad
I would rather have my hand cut off before I take a class with this professor again. The most lowlife person I have ever met. He is inconsiderate, mean, and just a terrible human being. He failed to be a lawyer, and I can see why. He probably has never had a significant other because he is selfish and doesn't know how to treat people with respect.
This professor was the worst I have ever taken here. His class was such a gloomy environment, asking questions is not encouraged what-so-ever. When you do ask questions, he responds in a snarky, one-word response. Also, the most monotone boring lectures you will ever see. He just reads of a black and white PowerPoint presentation the whole class.
DONT TAKE HIM
He is rude, unmotivated, and honestly just a bad teacher. His unwillingness to teach and explain the subject material make it much harder than it should be. My tuition was wasted in this class; he doesn't even cover everything taught in a basic high school macro economics class. I have never taken a worse class in my life, DO NOT TAKE.
absolute lifeless piece of trash
Nicar might be the worst professor at the school. It's crazy how mean he is to students and how he doesn't care. When I mean avoid him. At all costs. His review is nothing to the tests and the tests are impossible. He laughed in my fave talking about how the class averages are below 50s on his exams
This guy is the worst teacher I have ever had. I can see that he has a bad life as he loves to take it out on his students. He is HORRIBLE. HOPE HE GETS FIRED ASAP. don't know how he even has a job atp
Awful. I mean awful. I asked him a question that I didn't understand and instead of explaining he said “do not come to my office hours if you are going to ask dumb questions.” Test averages are in the 50s and he refuses to curve. I think he actually gets off to his students doing horrible in his class. Stay away, I am praying he gets fired
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. the only reason i did well in this class was bc i took ap micro and i can teach myself. he takes pleasure in students doing poorly and is not engaging in lectures at all. nicar is just a miserable human being overall. he's sarcastic, dry, and just grumpy. this man needs an attitude check immediately.
Dude is a straight up loser
Doesn't help at all. Studied 30 hours on the final just to realize that the exam was almost impossible. Does not help in class or at office hours. Mean to the students. Do not take this class
Terrible teacher. Can't even understand what he is saying during his lectures, and makes you feel like you're the problem if you go and meet with him during office hours. His tests are impossible and nothing like what is taught or on his study guides. He expects you to fail his class. He is such a weirdo creep I don't know how he is still a teacher
This professor is the worst professor at TCU hands down. He will call you dumb in front of the class if you ask a question and teaches into the Econ but teaches like it's law. Not to mention, students found him on Grindr. So unless you're gay, good luck getting an A…
Should be fired
I have no idea how this man has a job.
I have never truely hated anyone in my life until I met Mr.Nicar, he is actually one of the worst human beings I have ever met. He is an egocentrical jack a** who thinks his way is the only way and finds amusement in failing his students.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE HIM. Avoid at all costs.... even if that means switching your major. jk but seriously do not take him
Do your part when you get your evaluation, he is not to be trusted with your GPA & education. A neglectful man with no heart for his student, a failed professor who shouldn't teach macro at a high school level. None is similar to what you studied, dislikes progress, & questions. For a guy who once had hair on his head, he messed up big time.
Rude, unreliable, & ignorant. He cares more for his own ego, as well as his own knowledge on the class. Claims that "I am a student" & yet acts like he rules each & every class he teaches. A disappointing Intro teacher who demands perfection every time. In no way should your advisor recommend his education, and if they do, make up and excuse to not
This "professor" is absolutely untaught. I can't considered him as a professor, His lectures will make you doze off even with an energy drink. I've printed multiple in class worksheets, re-work the assignments on repeat, just for him to put different scenarios on the exams. One person is cheating he hits the entire class with never seen questions.
