brilliant, inspiring dude that is in it to change the world one brain at a time

The only professor I've ever taken 3 consecutive classes with. The only professor I've felt ever taught .

unreal
AWESOME GUY!! makes things interesting and fun...and he's a hottie
take the class, even if you're not a comm major. 5 long years here,i can say he's one of that rare kind of professor who gets you fired up because HE'S fired up. excellent teacher.
He's a great professor that wants his students to learn.. If youre not doing well on the tests, he will provide you with other options because its more than the grade. Absolutely the most unorganized person ever but awesome.

He's so into what he teaches, it's great!
Steve is a democrat (...small 'd') trying to use rhetoric as a means of making the world a better place to live in while simultaniously fighting both the societal and personal tendancy towards facism. His madness is engrossing.
engaging prof who disguises learning as entertaining discussion.
An enjoyabole, engrossing and interesting class...he has a passion for what he does and makes students feel intelligent when they speak in class
Awesome professor, great guy! He will bend over backwards to help the students and fills the classroom with intelligent discussion and laughter.

unspeakable
extremely unorganized, absent minded. doesn't address needs in a timely manner. often dismisses class early or cancels it all together. Takes long time to return tests/papers
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. He's inspiring and passionate - everything a professor should be. Encourages students to challenge the system, and is ALWAYS willing to help you out if you're not happy with a test/paper grade. Incredibly disoragnized, but one of (if not THE best) professors I've ever had.
Olbrys is a crazy man. Easy, but crazy. He's very fair. lecture is optional if you ask me, since you will sit and wonder how to write notes on the left wing talk he fills his lectures will. Hot topics include why he hates bush. Skip the lectures and buy the mad dasher notes and you'll get ace it.
Easiest class I've ever taken at UMass. It's a 297 class, but I took it as a freshmen and it was the easiest A ever. I went to the class only FIVE times, and still aced both papers and the exam. How did I do it? I bought the Mad Dasher. That's ALL you need to get an A in that class. TAKE IT! EASY A
Dont ever ask for a recommendation. Not if you actually want one, that is.
Can you skip class, buy mad dasher notes and get an A? Yes. But don't. You'll be missing out. Steven and his class aren't about grades. Its about actually learning something. Steven teaches Democracy by teaching democratically. Take this class, open your mind, speak your mind, and appreciate it.
He is awesome. He keeps you fascinated. His lectures are so interesting that you don't even realize you're learning, you think you're just having a great time listening to him talk. If you skip his class, you are totally missing out.
He puts on a show in order to capture the student audience, hence his class is not only educational but also entertaining. A really good thing is that it's not at all hard to reach the serious material interwoven into his definition and story mixture. Very good professor, very Intellegent.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. One of the most passionate and interesting professors at UMASS. Its awesome being a Comm major when there are professors like him teaching.

Stephen is a very nice gentleman. Very fake, and very interested in drugs. He's an incredible teacher to have for an introductory course because it was so easy. Definitely take him if you want to take 118. Good time boys bye okay
Easy teacher and a class that you don't have to attend every lecture. Gives a review sheet before each exam that if you study you will do fine. Don't really try and you'll get a B. If you wanna make the effort it's an easy A

i also only went to class 5 times, and aced both papers (SO EASY) and exams. Mad dashers are all you need. It's like $27, but well worth it. Easiest A, EVER. I took it as a freshman as well.
interesting class. i only went to about 50% of classes and got a b.i wish i had gone more often though, bc he does try to connect personally with the students.hes hilarious.everyone in there is always laughing.people loved him so much, that our class was so over capacity about 35 kids each class had ot sit on the floor bc there werent enough seats?

best teacher I ever had. really makes you think and want to learn. intro class was an easy A, but I never skipped a single class. that good.
i passed in a blank vhs titled 'ultimate prankster' and got an A. it was a ballsy move but he appreciated it. if you're lucky enough to get him in a small class he'll really work with you, unless you're an egghead. very entertainin teacher.

May I say: "I am in LOVE with this man!!!" He is great. Very clear and knows how to connect with students. He uses great example to illustrate every point he makes. Very friendly and very handsome as well.
great teaching! i really enjoy going to class, lecture was always packed and we're all constantly laughing at his jokes.
Steve is very intelligent and friendly. Gives great real life examples for everything. Very entertaining and fun. His tests are extremely straight forward. Take this class with him!!!
I failed my first test so I talked with him about how I can do better. We went over the test and he told me what I needed to work on. I recieved and 85 on my next test my final grade for the class A- enough said.
best teacher EVER..lectures are great he grabs your attention by talking about sex and drugs..tests are easy and if u do bad, no big deal u can do a project to help your grade or he can see what you were thinking in your head and he might actually give u more points even if you got the questions wrong!!! TAKE HIS CLASS
Everybody should take a class with him. thats all.
such an interesting class, i never skipped it. olbrys is hilarious, and ridiculously hot. exams are simple, and the material is fun... and i'm not even a comm major.
TAKE THIS CLASS ITS AMAZING. Olbyrs is one of those really cool uncles that you can get **** with. You'll get an A and you'll want to go to class.
Great Lecture. No attendance and he still keeps the class packed. Theres 2 tests thats all, no other assignments. low workload class. Theres two text books for the class but i would say save the money and just split the mad dashers with a friend thats honestly all you need and if you have those you dont have to go to class but you'd be missing out.
Steve is great. Very intelligent and makes the class engaging. Material is not hard but very interesting. If you need to take comm 118 take it with Steve!
one of the best professors ive ever had
definitely one of the best professors at UMASS!
Hey can anyone help me out and post Steves email? or email it to me [email protected] PLEASE i would so thankful
Made the material fun
SO AWESOME! Take a class with Steve.. he's entertaining, extremelly intelligent, and really knows how to connect with college-age kids. P.S. he's easy on the eyes.
BEST COLLEGE PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD!
he's great. he wants to teach you about life, not just material for the exam. there is no homework, only the midterm and final. good class to take!
Funny guy. I wish more professors were like him. Not only does he keep you laughing on most days, he does not "teach for the test." If you need help with anything he is willing to take the time to help you. If you take a comm course take it with him.
Greatest frickin teacher ever!! Makes the class laugh each and every time. Theres no attendance, however, this is the class where ull wanna go all the time. LOVE HIM!!
Steve is by far the best professor there is… anywhere. He is a true genius, and to attend Umass without taking a class with him would be wrong. He is truly inspiring.
Olbrys is the man. He is superb in so many ways.
Steve is the ****in****. His class was so easy, i got an A without doing a thing. There is a book, but he tells you right in th beginning that it's too expensive and to not waste your time. Classes were really fun and interesting. He could care less if you came, but you really will WANT TO GO!! He's the man definitly take his class if you can!
He is just simply the ***t! There was never a dull lecture. I definately recommend taking any comm course with him if you ever get the chance. You will learn more from him than any other dull, boring professor on campus that will "teach" the class with their nose stuck in a book.
Olbrys is the man! he's taking some time off.. but he'll be back and Comm majors shouldn't miss an opportunity to have him as a professor.. you will want to go to class! and you may not even find a seat! so entertaining you remember every it of material.. one of the best teachers EVER
best professor i've had, is really into what hes teaching and related well to students. great guy, and sexy too.
awesome prof. love his work, really interesting and easy to listen to. don't need to attend class, but it's not worth missing his lectures because they're fun to go to
I'm a former student of Olbrys during my undergrad years and am nearing completing my MBA in NY. I've already left an eval on here YEARS ago, but am writing another b/c after 4 years at UMASS and 2 at Baruch, Olbrys remains one of the most amazing professors I had the absolute pleasure of learning from. Only attnd opt class where EVERYONE shows up!
hes a little overrated.. he has a lot to say and can def. share a lot of wisdom, but his lectures are all over the place and we got little to no feed back on any of our work, as much fun as it is to have a professor that doesnt care about the effort you put into classes, it got tiring after the first two weeks
I graduated from UMASS 4 years ago, class 08"! and Olbrys was the reason I got into Communications. He was such a great guy, very easy to talk to, overrall, he is the reason I am doing what I do now. I am in Communications as a Copywriters and because of him, I was able to do something I enjoy. Thanks for the great 4 years at UMASS! - RA 08'
Incredible man. Stephen is one of the best professors at this university. I instantly became friends with him and we chat all the time. No deadlines for assignments. No exams. No busy work. Just pure learning and creativity (if you want). Take his class at all cost!
Best professor at UMass. I would take it again, he is flexible with the syllabus and wants the best for students.
Stephen changed my outlook on life. I'm taking what I learned from Comm 297 and applying it to my life. That is all I want from a college class and Stephen can easily make that impact.
Stephen is HILARIOUS. He always made class fun and was understanding when the students were stressed around exam time. He doesn't go off any notes, which makes for an interesting lecture but also causes him to go off on some tangents, making it difficult to understand what he was getting at sometimes.
This guy is a savage. Best class at Umass. No exams. 6 total papers spread over the entire semester.
Stephen is really inspirational and interesting to listen to. Kind of just talks about life all class and gets super off topic. You don't take notes, there are no tests or quizzes, and there is no homework. Just papers and projects. You don't need to go to class--although he is interesting the class can get pretty boring
Very easy class as long as you write the papers carefully. Papers are a bit of pain but he basically gave As to everyone, and he is very funny, interesting lecture. Nice choice for major requirements and gened
Stephen is such a caring professor. He really wants to see all his students succeed. He is passionate about what he teaches and is always there to help the students with any matter. There was little classwork. As long as you attend classes the papers will be easy to write!
Great guy!
Stephen is the funniest professor. He's very passionate about what he teaches. He's extremely lenient and very understanding of life outside the class. There are no exams, you just have to listen to his podcast and answer questions.
Do not take any class with this dude he literally spoiled the entirety of avengers endgame in class less than a week after it came out. Wouldve liked to give him a good rating because he seemed alright before that spoil but its a joke of a class anyway. You do not have to go to even one of his rambling and incoherent lectures to get a good grade.
Hands down one of the best professors at UMass. Would take his class again and would recommend to everyone. Not the greatest at emailing, but his lectures are actually interesting and funny. No notes to take and no exams. Just got to listen to the podcasts (which is your textbook). Pretty pertinent that you show up to class but thats about it.
Humor in Society with Professor Olbrys is one of the best classes I've ever taken at UMass. Incredibly interesting topic from an incredibly interesting guy. He cares deeply about his studies and his students. I am never bored in class and this is one of my only classes I'm excited to go to. He makes learning fun, I wish I took this class sooner!
By far one of the best professors at UMass and especially in the Comm department. Lectures are pretty entertaining to listen to. If you can write papers then this is the class for you. He's very kind hearted and genuine, he understands what it means to be a student and most teachers do. a must take class and he's a pretty chill grader.
Steve is a great guy and lives far away from campus so class can get canceled a lot. Hes an easy grader but for the right reasons and cares about students learning about life and the material. The course can get sad and dark sometimes and the only grades are three papers which are founded on the students creativity. Hes very lively and funny too.
He wasnt very prepared for online courses... as in he didnt post the lectures until a few weeks into the semester.
He is a cool guy. All you do is listen to podcasts and then answer questions that just show you listened. I wanted folklore of alcohol and that's exactly what I got. On the papers he assigns, he asks for a ton of feedback about his podcast which can be annoying. He doesn't expect you to write much, but sometimes it's hard to know what to say.
TAKE THIS CLASS! It consisted of 2 podcasts a week + corresponding questions, and then a final paper. The material was so interesting and fun and his lecture style is so engaging. Especially for an online course, Steve knows how to get his students fascinated, and have an appropriate workload at the same time. Cannot recommend him enough!!
ALWAYS ALWAYS TAKE STEPHEN. No assignments just answering short questions on his podcasts and a project at the end. If you want an easy A, with not a lot of commitment and an ACTUAL interesting class, take this class with Stephen
I've taken three of his classes and they're all on fascinating subjects. Entertaining lecturer, he likes to act out and perform his stories and material. Minimal work for the amount of credits. One of the few profs where you can go to class and actually just sit back and enjoy what he's talking about without worrying about noting everything.
Stephen is so raw and real and got me interested in the subject of alcohol from a folklore perspective like I never thought I would. Going to class was therapeutic and at times almost made me tear up. The lecs are great, the podcast is great to listen to while at the dining hall, and homeworks are basically you do it or you don't. Very flexible.
Stephen is probably the best professor on campus. His lectures were interesting and didn't require extensive note-taking. Attendance is taken, so if you miss a class you need to complete an easy make-up assignment based on the notes he posts online. You can ultimately pick your grade based on the final project you choose. Take his class if you can.
This class was very easy. Attendance was mandatory but you can make up the class by reading the lecture and submitting notes for credit. The assignments are easy, just doing the minimum and submitting them will get you a B. The professor is a funky guy and is passionate about his class but is really cool. Hard to get ahold of outside class tho.
Class was easy. Didn't require any textbook just your own knowledge. Grades are based off 3 response assignments and attendance, this gives you an automatic B if you do them, can do more work for a higher grade. Attendance is mandatory, but can read lectures and write about them and submit it. Teacher is very passionate, really enjoyed the class.
Prof. Olbrys brings a fun, engaging style to the class. Just listen to podcasts and answer questions - minimal work for the credits. unstuck study was super helpful for prepping, along with the free textbook. Definitely take this class!
It is hard to find professors who are immensely passionate about their course and are willing to go above and beyond to cater to the content of the syllabus; he is one of them. If I can, I will sit in one of his class every semester, even if it does not buy me credit only because I want to go listen to what he has to say.
Passionate, kind, genuine and extremely enjoyable. Steve loves his students and values creating honest relationships and real connections with his them. I found myself both laughing and sometimes welling up with tears from how real and connected to himself that he is. All you could want in a professor, and a friend.
