I've had a few classes with Pennell. He and Kiwi are the best teachers I've ever had. I guarantee you will not find a nicer person on this planet than Dr. Pennell (he doesn't even use a harsh red pen when he grades ;-).

Pennell is great! He's only "easy" because of how well he explains his material. His homework and testing times are left flexible because he understands how rough college class life can be. Awesome guy, very nice, and he makes sure his studen

Absolutely the best professor at UML. His course offers some very challenging material but his lectures help you navigate your way through the tangled mess that is Differential Equations.....

This Professor is an asset to the university of Massachusetts. He deserves either a raise or promotion to Dean. He is organized consisten and can come across clear as windexed glass. Don't get me wrong this class is hard, but he inspires you to do good. He is very approachable.

Prof. Pennel is so good because he has the ability to make the most complex math concepts understandable to everyone in his class. He covers more material, but his students learn the material better than the other classes and do better on the final exams.

BEST TEACHER AT UML, HELPS YOU SO MUCH IF YOU GET WORSE THAN A 'C' YOU ARE A TERRIBLE TERRIBLE STUDENT. He allows full pages of notes on tests and final. Very good teacher, CLEAR, Informative, and HELPFULL beyond a doubt. Favorite teacher at UML. Take any class he teaches, you WILL LEARN!!!

Excellent!!! He is the best professor ever. Extremely clear, in both speaking and writting on the board. He takes his time with every class and is more than happy to help you outside of class. He even stopped eating his lunch to come help with our project. I wish he taught more classes, I would take anything that he taught.

Wicked awesome professor. Understands that we have a lot of work and its very lenient with the homework due time. Explains work very clearly and is very helpful and always asks if anyone has any questions or problems at the beginning/end of class. I would definitely take a class of his again. Greatest professorI have taken yet.

Made a hard topic very easy to understand. Speaks fluent English unlike many professors here. Very understanding, the best instructor I have ever had in my life. Students from other classes and math courses come to him for advice. I recommend him without any doubt. Just wish he taught engineering.

He's really a great guy and he's brilliant. Homework is easy plus you can pass it in a week late. Tests are like the same as the homeworks. Also, doesn't really care if you go to class, but if you do, you learn a lot. I would recommend him even if you werent considering taking calc at the honors level cuz its a great class.

He made the material as easy as it could possibly be and his grading system makes it hard for you to fail but easy to get an A (with some work)

Dr. Pennell made some pretty complicated material very easy to understand. One of the most considerate professors I have ever encountered. Don't think I could have passed this class with another professor - THANK YOU DR. PENNELL

Pennell is the chair for math. He is very understandable! He taught engineering dif eqs and it was very easy. 3 tests 23% each. big project (hard) 23% and homework 23%. Final counts 20% if lower than ur overall average. IF higher, counts 50%. Homework passed in by 5pm to be counted ontime. Homework can be passed in without penalty for full credit.

Pennell is by far the best math teacher i have ever had. the material is difficult but he makes it so easy and if you need any help at all, with anything he is always available to help you. you would never know that he is the chair either!

Literally the greatest teacher I have had. Believe me he should be teaching a course on how to teach to all the other professors. I have so much respect for him. Notes are helpful not useless, homework is just hard enough, tests are fair and practice tests are provided. Do the practice tests and you will do good.

Unbelievably easy for the highest level of math for most science majors. My tutor helped me through most math classes but for this class I hardly ever needed his help at all! If you are taking Math at UML Kiwi (Graham-Eagle), Brent, Weston and Pennell are a must! I'll miss them.

Best Teacher ever!!!!!!!!!! He is very clear and teaches by giving examples. He makes the course very simple. The only that is difficult is his project but he gives a project revision. Great professor! take his class

A good professor. Very clear in class. Puts things on the tests that you are not truly ready for. Gives you a practice exam and then puts things that he will not ask or are intensely difficult to solve using algebraic methods. Good professor and a nice person.

Extraordinarily clear and easy. He makes the material accessible to all, even if you don't understand some of the fundamentals. He makes class really fun and throws around some jokes in class. Practice exams are almost identical (actually a bit harder) to the actual ones.

Very good teacher. He knows how to relay the material to the class in a clear way. He is very helpful if you are stuck, either in class, in his office hours, or by email. I suggest going to his office hours if you are a little stuck and he will help you as long as it takes. Very nice guy too.

Best calculus teacher at Umass Lowell, and he will help you when ever you need it. I went to him a few hours before my final and he took time from grading his finals and reviewed with me for 2 hours. really cares about what hes teaching and students.

Soft spoken, quiet, always available for help if you need it. Assigns a long project in his ODE class but helps you along the way if you get stuck. Exams aren't that hard. Take good notes, do the homework (which is much harder than his exams). Great guy, very smart.

Best professor at Lowell. Elite lecturing skills. Soft-spoken, unpretentious, but brilliant mathematician who makes complex, nebulous concepts crystal clear. The exams are challenging and address the material, but are not unreasonably difficult. There is a group project worth 20% of your grade; you have the option to do it alone. Would take again.

Most students get an A, not because he's soft on expectations or grading but because if you pay attention and do homework you will learn everything he teaches. Makes the most complex concepts crystal clear and reinforces concepts by having assignments build on each other. Best math teacher I've ever had. There's one project that isn't bad.

I love how he held his office hours in the tutoring center. I'm one of the peer tutors and would look forward to the days when he worked and would purposefully choose the room where he was, so I could work next to him. He even helped me with a super-challenging circuits problem and made it so easy to understand: very polite and very, very modest!

We must protect Dr. Pennell at all costs. He's such a sweet man and such a good teacher, and if you're paying attention he's really funny too. He's one of the most well-liked and well-respected professors at UML, and with good reason. It's easy to do well in the class, but not because he doesn't challenge students - he's just a really good teacher.

Easily one of the best professors in the entire country. Extremely approachable, and willing to help you with any questions you might have. Regardless of whether or not it's his class you need help in. There's a reason he has 5.0 rating here. Take every class you can with him, it's truly an amazing opportunity to learn from him.

Prof Pennell is such a nice guy. His class is really enjoyable to go to, and he makes what you're studying seem like it matters and gives examples of how you would use it in the real world. Super generous grading and he gives lots of partial credit. He really just wants to see that you basically understand the material.

Pennell is amazing. He assigns homework out of a book - not Pearson unlike most every other math professor at UML. He gives so many chances for extra credit and has a take home portion for every exam. He cares about all of his students and will offer to reschedule exams if you have to miss class for any reason. Very understanding and considerate.

Helped tutor me in math classes he doesn't even teach and helped me get 100s on the homeworks in those classes. He is also incredibly patient and thorough. Class is awesome, and he explains why differential equations works the way they do and provides real life applications. He is a genius and cares about students in ways that most academics don't.

I took him for Engineering Differential Equations and again for Introduction to MATLab programming. He holds office hours 4 days a week, multiple hours a day. He was so patient with me considering the fact that I wasn't in class most of the time due to my work schedule. Just keep in mind nobody is perfect though, and give him space when needed.

Professor takes almost three weeks to respond to emails. Grades are very slow and I wish I had more feedback so I could do better. His only advice is - talk to other students - - -- I just wish he could be more helpful

Did not respond to emails and was not available on office hours. I ended up using Khan academy to pass the class - why have a teacher when theyre not available?

Prof. Pennell, in Spring '15, you helped me solve a circuit problem using an infinite geometric series. My professor was stunned, admitting he couldn't have derived that solution himself.
