Good overhead notes.
Smart man, but goes off topic and hard to understand
notes dont flow...pretty boring
snoozer of a class!!!
Notes are a little limited, but a good teacher overall
No Comments
Intelligent+organized (if u don't 'see' this in his class-get out of poli sci)
great! 101 is kinda bland but you need it for poli ..he was not bad
This guy is so by the book: if you want good mark, right about England on essay
Teaches and looks like he's in the 1950's
Attack of the drone. A smart guy sure, but no aptitude for instruction. I'd rather read the textbook.
Very organized, fair marker, really enthusiastic about politics. He obviously likes to teach. I recommend this class, just make sure you don't miss his notes. If you take all of his notes, you could probably avoid buying the textbook.
This instructor may be very boring and dry but at least he's fair. Marking is sometimes hard, but very clear. He provides study guides for students, and lots of warning for exams, papers, and quizes. Respect students, and leans left politically.
He is a brilliant man who loves his politics, he tends to teach directly from the text book so classes can get dry at times. He is a fair marker and if you apply yourself you can get good marks.
Dr.Phillips is a brilliant man who loves politics. He is a fair marker and an organized instructor. If you care about Politics and want to learn a lot his classes are really good.To sum up,I have had good time and learned a lot in his classes.
he really enjoys politics he teachers from the book so you don't really need to go to class and the tests are easy
Extremly likeable, he encourages political debate and does not enforce his own opinions on students. The class can be a little dry at times but he is respectful and open to discussion. Fair marker and is always looking to give extra points. Recomended.
very knowlegable about canadian polictics!. provides balanced opinions and is very clear when expressing himself. A generous marker
Exams are easy if you study. He usually gives guide and hints. Term papers very easy marker, use good english and good sources and he'll give you a good mark. A little reading here and there easy "B" and a little more effort maybe an "A&
Dr. Phillips is rediculously smart; he knows too much about everything (related to course content of course). Quizzes, midterm, final and term paper are all straightforward (he gives study guides), and above all he's generous with the marking.
smart smart smart.. learned a lot....
Interesting class. Lectures and notes a bit boring...outline style. Kinda quirky and dry, but I recommend the course. Got and A- without trying to hard.
A fine young fellow. His lectures were bearable considering the dry material. He's very witty and respectful. A generous marker and a pleasure to be around.
I don't recommand his course if you want to take his class as your first political science course...his lectures are boring and confusing. Plus, his voice is so low. a lot of students skip his class. He wasn't a fair marker with me
Class was somewhat boring, and covered alot of material, but that is to be expected. Fair grader.
Very articulate, knowledgeable, and structured. Doesn't inflict political opinions much at all. Lot's of material, a bit dry. Very fair, even generous, marker. I couldn't stay awake, sometimes. Can't listen to him talk about Bureacracies...
An extremely knowledgable and structured instructor who's enthusiastic about teaching. Very straightforward quizzes & exams as well as varied term paper topics. He is generous with the marking, easy to get along with, and welcome class debate. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
He reminds me of Niels from the show 'Fraser'. Overall, a very fair and professional instructor who knows what he's talking about and takes a real interest in the class and what students have to say. As long as you study for tests and quizzes, you should do fine.
Dr.Phillips is a nice man, he marks very easily on the midterm and the essay. THe quizzes are easy as long as you read the book. The only flaw with Mr.Phllips is that his lectures are VERY BORING, other than that a okay teacher
The only complaint i have is that Philips i think has a little bit of a speech impediment which really restricts him when he is lecturing. I think alot of the comments about the boring factors harks back to his speech impediment. He studders like crazy!hard to keep track with all of the studdering
His quizes are strangely difficult, as one really needs to read all the material or have previous knowledge. That being said he is fair as none of the information is a suprise. He tries to keep a relativley dry subject as intresting as possible. If you have to take polisci 1119 he is a good teacher; make sure you keep up w/ your readings.
The individual who made the comment about Mr.Phillips speech impediment obviously has a hearing impediment. In fact, Mr Phillips is extremely articulate. Also his pronunciation of certain words is a consequence of having been born in England. He is an excellent prof.. He is clearly passionate about politics and this is apparent in his lectures.
wonderful prof. very clearly lecture. learn a lot from his class. fair and kinda easy exams.read ,u can do good. very helpful.esp. my paper.give me a lots advice and borrow me book to read. he knows a lots about poli.i am agree that "He is clearly passionate about politics". heavlly suggest u to take his class. he makes joke in class all the time.
What speech impediment?
Dr. Phillips is how every professor should be. Organized, at ease, approachable, articulate, very very knowledgeable and a fair marker. Oh yeah, and he has a masters, a Phd, a law degree and 3 undergrad degrees. Insane.
One word: BORING
probably the most boring teacher I have ever had. His notes dont help at all, you dont even need to go to class. Do your own chapeter summaries, do the readings and make sure u pay attention to when the quizzes are. He ripped everyones essays apart so good luck on that. I dont recommend his class if you really want to learn
Phillips is great. You have to study though. For the quizzes study the obscure points in the chapters, not dates but info like who was the first governer general of Canada. For the exams just MEMORIZE (or try to) the notes he gives in class. Just read the handouts, etc.
Smart guy, fairly easy tests
He is really smart but makes his notes really complex. Make sure you know a little about Australian politics to get on his good side. His lectures are really boring and you have to manage your time carefully during the final. Otherwise, he is an awsome prof.
Super passionate about poli. and pretty clear despite the fact that his notes aren't always as easy to follow. He has alot of great examples to help clarify and explain things. He's approachable and always available and willing to help. Admittedly Politics is super boring, but Phillips does his job and does it well. I learned alot he's quite good.
too demanding regarding the essays for a first year class. Helpful, he tries to explain but not very clear...too wordy. Doens't get to the point, way too much detail.
Oh god!! could there be a more boring prof! it really wasn't the content it was the way it was delivered. He reminded me of that prof int he ferris buller movie. He tries to be funny but almost never succeds (it's kind of sad).
Nice guy, not great at pinpointing areas of emphasis, unclear expecations.
Stephen knows his material really well and very passionate about politics. Altho the lectures are kinda boring and his notes are hard to follow, but the exam and quizs are pretty easy if u study the notes! Just try to memorize it and you should do well
To be frank, his lectures are quite boring. Try to expand your notes beyond what he writes on the board so that you have something to study-- his chalk board notes are quite vague. Exams are straight forward if you put in the work, and quizzes are simple if you read the material 3 times. Be clear in the paper and use many sources. Overall, b+.
He's good, just listen to what he says, and read what he tells you to read. Twice.
Great Prof, just go to class and pay attention. And read what he tells you to read.
He's very passionate about politics, but teaching-wise, he's ok. Sometimes jokes in class, but unless you keep up with the news you might be clueless :P You definitely need to KNOW politics; reading the text just isn't enough. His marking is fair.
He loves his politics with a passion and is super nice but uses a lot of big words and small difficult words, thus, his lectures are hard to follow and focus on. Read/study what he assigns and the quizzes and midterm are a breeze. The term paper is a tad demanding but he gives you ample time to do it. Overall great teacher.
A very nice guy!
DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TAKIN THIS COURSE IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT. THIS COURSE IS SO HARD SO SOSOSOSO HARD. FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT GOOD AT ENGLISH. COZ HE REQUIRES GOOD ENGLISH SKILLS TO STUDENTS. WHY THERE IS NO PRERQ IN THIS COURSE?
I took the online section of this course. Lots of material cover and a lot of reading. I had no prior knowledge of Politics so everything was new to me. Quizzes and tests were average in difficulty, you really have to know your stuff. He was an easy marker for the essay though. I would recommend if you don't mind doing a lot of reading.
Agree. He makes a huge amount of work for students. This class is pre req for Poli Sci in University but I dont think Mr. Phillips ever had to have a job outside of academia otherwise he would know. I print out just 1 lecture and it take 40 pages! Then have to do textbook reading! Big joke on students! Ruined appreciation for politics...
Not flashy but knows his stuff.
Do NOT take this class! Unless you have a huge interest (i thought i did) in politics. The reading is painful. The amount of reading is a joke. Add on a paper, 4 quizzes, a mid term and questions. To make matters worse, the questions on tests are impossible. Does he think ppl memorize the text. Bad, so bad! FYI I'm an A student, not a slacker.
very hard and a lot to read.but there are no tricks and all answers come from noted material, however the quizzes are very difficult as questions are often too specific. course load was heavy
I took his online classes twice. He's very knowledgeable and his online lectures are very detailed. Be sure to keep up with readings as much as possible and dont forget about quizzes or online discussions if you take it online. responds very quickly to any concerns very quickly and is often flexible with writing times if you have problems with them
took his class online. Quizzes are pretty hard since you really have to read the stuff. But for exams he marks generously. Do the term paper super ahead of time it is crazy its supposed to be like 10 pages and the chicago style citing almost killed me
took the online class. Quizzes are very very difficult and you really have to know your stuff, but I found the midterms were much easier but maybe thats because I studied harder for them. Overall a fair marker as far as I can tell. He is crystal clear on his lectures and notes and expectations which is really nice.
Very easygoing and helpful. 1 paper, 4 quizzes, 1 midterm, and a final. He gives you clear criteria for everything, just do the readings as required and you'll do fine. Did intro to polisci as my term 5 nursing elective, was still fine with the course while writing 12 page papers every week.
he is very passionate about politics. material and delivery is extremely dry.
A bit 'highschool' in his delivery -- but hey, its a first level course! And if you follow his guidelines, its fairly simple to maintain a good grade. He does expect you to know what you're talking about though! Also, extremely passionate about politics. Very informative, and always willing to help.
great instructor!
So enthusiastic! He has unbridled passion when it comes to the history of Canadian politics.
He is so passionate about politics, he makes you interested. His love for it is infectious. He depicts politics like a soap opera, but still knows so much that you learn. Show up to class and you will be just fine on all tests, papers and exams.
Stephen Phillips, what a guy! His lectures really do flesh out the readings, and he is just to passionate about politics that it will make some parts of the lecture surprisingly engaging. Fair marker, easy quizzes and exams. His class rewards students who work hard. Class does get dull if you don't do the readings because you will be lost!
Really passionate. Go to class and read the text he tells you to read. It really helps when you do both, even when they cover the same topic. If you have a question, ask. He will always answer and not make you feel bad for not knowing something.
Great guy who really passionately loves political science, and it rubs off on you throughout the class, however, every point is a story on something that he cant help but talk about and it gets hard to filter out the what you need to actually know in the class.
Take the course in class. Online , there were 4 reading materials, plus mandatory weekly discussions. It was challenging to keep up with other courses. He is very helpful and will answer your questions at anytime.
Has a heart of gold, and teaches extremely well. He has quizzes and exams that are extremely fair. Provides good insights into politics and for sure, a guy to take if you want to go into Political Science.
Great guy who really know his stuff, but his texts and quizzes are hard.He expects you to know the textbook inside out.He gives lengthy explanations on any question you ask in class. His multiple choice questions set up to have you guessing.
Great instructor, super helpful, encyclopedic political knowledge. Test him on anything Canadian - he knows it, with background!
I took his online class. Some complain that it's alot of reading but I didn't find it excessive. If you don't like reading go work at McDonald's because if you cant get through this course then good luck in 3rd and 4th year. I found him to be fair in his marking, good feedback to help for future essays. I enjoyed studying about Canadian politics.
Good class. Very nice teacher and very clear. Easy to do well in his class if you show up and pay attention. Really enjoyed this class and his teaching! He knows everything there is to know about Canadian politics.
Great prof! Online course was easy to follow, he replied promptly to messages. Everything was done on time and well organized. He's very nice, and you truly get what you put in -- he makes it easy to do well if you want to, or to slack off it you want. I recommend his class and think he's a great prof.
He's great. Lectures are well-structured and clear; he answers e-mail very quickly; grades papers promptly; provides encouragement, direction and ideas for papers. Exams are challenging! Multiple choice, short-answer, long answer and essay, all on one test. Questions on everything imaginable: dates, names, policy, judicial rulings -- you name it.
Stephen is obviously a very intelligent and passionate instructor- he responded quickly to all questions posted online and seemed very approachable. Be warned, the topic can be very dry- there is a ton of reading in this online class and exams incorporate parts from both text book and supplementary readings.
This isn't an "easy" class in terms of easy assignments, but the material is presented very comprehensively and is easy to follow if you try. Marks quizzes and assignments very quickly and leaves LOTS of useful comments on assignments. Tells funny anecdotes and awful political jokes. Course material relevant for all Canadians. Recommended.
Professor Philips is terrific. He is extremely knowledgeable, approachable and passionate about the subject he teaches. He doesn't assign much, but the textbook is helpful as he quizzes on the chapters. He's a funny guy in his Political-nerdy kind of way. Highly recommend if you are interested in politics!
You really need to learn a lot of material to do well in this class, including any readings, videos and guest speakers. He comes across as quite formal online, but don't let that intimidate you. He's a very nice man and eager to help you learn. Go see him about the paper; he gives good ideas that will help you get a sense of direction.
Stephen knows what he does and can't be tricked; You need to do a lot to be successful. Be sure to do ALL the readings and take notes on the most important stuff you come across-this can surely benefit you on his quizzes and tests. Good advice on term papers. Be aware that it can get boring. A hard course, but a good prof. Very approachable/witty.
He's a really witty guy with a nerdy sense of humour. Laugh at his jokes, it won't kill you. He's not a hard marker if you study and are willing to work hard. Keep up with readings and take good notes. Term paper was worth thirty percent and he marked it fairly, but not easily. Tests and Quizzes are easy as long as you KEEP UP WITH THE READINGS.
Stephen's lectures are excellent--the best at Langara, if you ask me. He explains everything thoroughly and always includes examples. His writing style is clear and concise--he could easily publish a textbook on Canadian politics. He is a fair marker. Be sure to study for all exams, you'd be a fool not to. Excellent instructor for high achievers.
Great instructor, very clear. His tests are straightforward if you do the readings and pay attention in class. I want to take more classes with him.
I absolutely hated his class. He tends to ramble during his lectures and go off topic. His quizzes are not to bad but his exams are pretty hard. He gives you a lot of terms to study and barely picks any of them.
Before I go on, I have to disclaim my use of the "Hilarious" tag. If you love nerdy humour, he's great, if not then it's pretty cheesy. Dr Phillips was an excellent teacher. More than any of my other profs, it was clear that he loved the subject. It wasn't the easiest course, but if you put the work in, you'll do fine.
Amazing professor! I thoroughly enjoyed his class. His lectures were very clear, well organized, and easy to understand. If you do all of the reading, you will pass the tests & quizzes with flying colours. He grades quickly and fairly. I would recommend him to anyone!
Lots of lectures and assigned readings, what few assignments there are will be straight forward but graded critically.
In addition to giving difficult exams and quizzes Stephen is an extremely hard marker. In order to get a good grade you need to study all, and I mean ALL, the readings. He will test you on anything and everything. To his credit he does provide clear feedback, grades quickly and will responds promptly to emails requests.
very passionate and knowledgeable about poli sci, you will learn a lot
Great lectures, and is a very approachable prof! Knows a lot about the Canadian political scene and makes sure you come out of the course with a much better understanding of government in Canada.
One of the best lecturers at Langara, very knowledgeable in his subject, but also a tough marker. The exams were difficult, so you have to prepare a lot. If you are interested in politics, I highly recommend him.
Amazing prof. Really passionate about everything politics. Can be a bit of a tough grader but gives good feedback. His lectures can be long but he'll slip in a joke every now and then. Great guy! Would take again in a heartbeat.
Very enthusiastic about what he is teaching. I am pretty sure that you will know a lot about Canadian Politics. His exams and quizzes are straight forward, read the assigned readings and you will get a good grade. Quizzes are MC and midterms includes MC, Short answers, and essay.
Like many others here have said, Dr. Phillips is extremely knowledgeable and gives great feedback. But I would only recommend the course if you are really interested in Poli Sci. It is very content heavy and requires a ton of reading (the online version at least). Great prof though!
A very engaging professor and enthusiastic about his field. Although, there are some things that you need to know, he gives out chapter quizes once in a while and seminars. His exams are almost identical, MC,matching, and Essay, but short answers in the final. But, the main subject about the course is the term paper.
Get ready to read! Not a easy class but Dr. Phillips is a great teacher, so those who like politics will enjoy his lecture so much. Evaluation is... Mid-term Examination 20% Term Paper 30% Quizzes 20% (5% *4times) Participation 5% Final Examination 25%
Get ready to read the book and take notes if you want to do well. Quizzes are relatively hard, make sure you know the book material. Midterms/Finals are easier than quizzes if you study. He is a fair marker on the paper. Self-study course with him. Are you disciplined enough?
The best *lecturer* I've had yet. He's very organized and really knows his stuff. He's quite funny, and perfectly clear with all his expectations, the study guides he gives for his mid term and final are fantastic and really clear, if you study off of them, there's no way you can't get an A.
I came to hate his class but it wasn't him, it was the morning class. Canadian politics are p boring, but he does make a few jokes and you do learn a lot about Canada but it was a long semester my guy. He posts A Lot on D2L, assigns lots of readings (you'll be fine if you don't do all of them), and his notes don't make sense if you weren't at class
Stephen gives the best lectures. He is quirky and hilariously nerdy, but he truly loves what he teaches and his enthusiasm shines through. He never rambles and sticks to a very clear structure, timing his lectures down to the minute. He also updates his lectures regularly to relate course materials to news events. One of the best.
Mr Phillips is my first Political Science prof .He always encourage students to be free thinkers. He is also a patient and kind prof who can give you many suggestions on no matter what the political issue are. Never skip the class, asking him question and you will get a good mark.
Stephen Phillips is an amazing educator and is passionate about politics. Probably one of the best people to introduce students to political science as his lectures are never boring and his assignments/readings/quizzes are not too hard, but makes you really learn the material if you want to do well. Two thumbs up!
My second class with Dr Phillips, and it was phenomenal. Very passionate about politics, nerdy and quirky in the best possible way. His lectures are clear and straightforward, and he pays attention to every detail. He is very knowledgeable; he wrote two chapters in the textbook. He reminds me of why I wanted to go into academics. Top notch!
Phillips is a very knowledgeable and passionate instructor. His quiz/exams are straightforward, but require you to be on top of the reading. Discipline is required to get a good grade in this class. Highest mark on the midterm was 84%. Tough grader, but cares for his students.
While the class wasn't difficult but was very boring. There is a huge amount of expected reading and there are some exam questions on them but they are few. While a lot was covered I feel like it was just memorizing and I never got a good understanding of governments in practice. He did bring in guests which were a cool bonus for this class.
Mr. Philips is a traditional teacher with the traditional teaching style. Even though he gives some reading after the class, it won't confuse you. The test and quizzes are closely related to the readings. He is also a knowledgable professor so, ask him questions if you don't understand.
He is an awesome teacher. Tons of knowledge in his mind. Need to engage in class, a bit of tough marking but you will pass if focus on every single thing. if you are looking for easy grades, then his class is not for you.
I took his online political science class and I wish I read more about him as most of the reviews on here arent as accurate as I would have thought. He took over a month to grade the term paper, and the tests are heavily based on the textbook, and are very specific. The class is very boring and do not take it if you want an easy A, or even B.
One of the best professors at Langara. Lectures go into details so you understand the material really well.
took class online during COVID. online, there's less of an opportunity to listen to profs explain their passion behind a subject, which hinders my motivation. NEVERTHELESS, Stephen has organised & detailed written lectures & a kind & approachable demeanour. study terms and events & develop some personal ideas & connections & you'll likely get an A
Worst professor ever on planet. Does not teach in online classes. Expect students to understand everything by themselves. Does not care about students.
He is worst professor in langara. Would not give marks even though you participated fairly. He would not give marks in exam paper and not a fair marker
Worst instructor I ever met in Langara College , dont know how to deal with students and my class was fully online no zoom session nothing, first he himself posts things late and want us to go through it quickly. Dont know how to mark term papers even. Really really bad instructor ever.
Took this class with Dr. Phillips thinking it would be fairly easy. I was so wrong. As a first year student I was so stressed out. He didn't teach much. Just posted lectures and told us to read certain chapters of the textbook. I got C+'s on my quizzes and exams and an A on my term paper. He really pushes his students but he is a fair marker
Took his online class this semester. No video lecture or any other supplemental voice format lecture. He just posts written material online and expect students to read both his written lecture and the textbook. Quizzes and exams are textbook heavy, details are important. Condition only apply to online class, not in person. Fair grader.
Took his online course. There was no video of lectures nor a zoom meeting. You have to put effort to understand his heavy lecture notes of about 7-8 pages long every week. Every week a quiz or group discussion. Quizzes are very hard.
He is committed to teach you well and make an online course as engaging as possible through quizzes and discussion questions. His lecture notes are lengthy but pretty explanatory and well written with up to date details. There was something every week so that I had to keep up with assigned readings and book chapters weekly. His grading was fair.
Took BC Politics and Gov in Summer 2021 term and it was a very straightforward course. No zoom or prerecorded lectures just a lot of reading but his lectures were very detailed, to the point, and easy to follow. It was easy to pick up what would be on the exams given how much coverage it got in lectures. Honestly not that bad. Well organized class.
He is a no-nonsense professor but his lectures were dry and this course was lecture heavy. He seems like a genuine person but he is a hard marker.
HORRIBLE teacher. Out of my 5 semesters at Langara, I can say that Dr. Phillips is absolutely the worst when it comes to teaching. His material is so dry - so much reading, not really any lecture videos. His quizzes are so gosh darn hard, you need to memorize every single itty bitty detail or you're done for.
Super interesting lectures, he knows his stuff. This class might be harder if you have zero knowledge of BC politics, but he walks you through everything and you'll be well educated by the end.
Professor Phillips' lectures are really informative, though the course may be tougher for those new to BC politics. Engaging with the material and using study tools like Unstuck study can really help. Overall, a great learning experience.
Professor Stephen is very knowlegable. He teaches Canada history and politics so profoundly and interesting!
