He teaches 101 at a 4th year level. Hard to uderstand what he wants.
very nice and understanding
4th year?? Maybe if you're stupid. He gives a lot & asks a lot. Great te
he is very intelligent and know his material, he is a great professor
very knowledgeable in the subject matter
Clever, makes class really interesting
extrememy smart and entertaining! great teacher
he is a wonderful teacher, i thoroughly enjoy his class!
wonderful professor! very smart and helpful!! great!
very good teacher, very professional...very nice!
Tends to veer off on tangents. Midterm/Final questions are really detailed.
nice guy, easy to talk to and has interesting side stories
Hopelessly disorganized - rants on and on. I never know what I'm supposed to get from his lectures.
No need to go to the class, aside from participation marks, because nothing he talks about will be on any exam. Talks on and on about nothing. He is fair when he marks papers though.
this teacher was terrible... he couldnt explain anything and was very non understanding...he doesnt talk about anything he plans on in his course outline leaving u very confused and feeling like there is no point to going to class.
Knows the material well, and has interesting lectures, but he is a very hard marker.
Presentations are unclear and disorganized. When asking for assistance and none is given.
Not my most favourite prof. Kind of a hard marker and I didn't really enjoy the class
very hard teacher, but an alright guy
He is always late for class. Never gets back to you through email or telephone. he's a hard marker and babbles on about stuff in lecture that is not on the exams.
People dont read the text and hate the class, but if you get into it he's very interesting. Its what you make of it. Tests are very hard if you are a slacker. Good prof to chat with
Horrible teacher. Boring as hell in what could be an interesting class. I stopped going after 2 weeks, just read the text, showed up for the final and got a C+
Never Again! Literally spent my classes watching the clock. Also, you will never ever be let go early! Thats a guarantee.
I thought that I was going to pass out in his calss it was so boring. I could actually feel my eyes rolling into the back of my head. His tests make no sense. Unless you're on something...don't take his class!
A nice guy, knows his stuff, expects you work for your marks...doesn't spoon feed you the material, you actually have to read it. His multiple choice questions are very tricky, know your stuff WELL.
unrealistic expectaions with assignments, hard projects, savage marker, very interesting, knows alot of useless information and will talk all class about unrelated shiat
I can't stand this class - i feel like i'm gonna fall asleep everytime. he knows a lot but doesn't make us wanna learn. i won't take any soc classes again
Boring classs! Don't take it unless you have to. Nice guy kinda quirky but extremely hard marker. All i can say is no the material!!!

Wonderfully entertaing. I learned so much from Piper. He's tough, but if you do your readings and pay attention in class you'll do well. A+.
classroom notes well organized. Very helpful study guide provided for mid-term and final exams.
So hard at marking
He i SO hard, his exams are more of a advanced English vocabulary test, then sociology. However, some credits, for his heplfulness, for sure. He helps you a lot, but I am not sure if that helps if you don't know 18 century English vocabulary history? To unclear, tohard assignments, interesting class.
he was horible, he was hard to understand and hard to listen to. hard marker. i did not learn much from him.
good guy, kinda reminds me of a cartoon character though.... muct be his voice, I still can't place which one though. he made a good 101 prof, but a rough second year prof, could have been all the pot i smoked over the summer though!
One of the worst at UCFV. His cheesy accent is hard to understand and his test are extremley hard. Lectures are all over the place and irrelevent. Dont take this class with him!!
The wrost instructor that I have ever had. I learned nothing. I would never recomend taking one of his classes.
Wow ok he really marks hard, the usual A students are only getting C+'s and maybe a B if they are lucky and for us average people you can expect a lower than average mark even with your best efforts. His essay marking is very hard, personally i dont even think he reads your essay in full!
he is absolutely pyscho! he cannot teach, he goes on an on, lecturing all over the place, hard to keep track, wastes so much time on the big catch (dont ask!) accent is horrible, multiple choice on exams are so hard (several questions have the same answers to choose from)avoid this man at all costs!
He knows what he is talking about. Hard marker, that's for sure so keep away if you don't have time to invest in his class.
No sense of humour, long, detailed lectures - again with no sense of humour. Drifts off track. The assignments were unethical - asking students to break a social norm. Did this pass the committe for ethics?? Hard marker and toward the end, I couldn't wait to get out of there.
He knows his stuff and is helpful outside of class time. Not that bad at all. Students who don't like him are obviously not putting in the effort. It only gets harder guys. He is a good teacher and an average marker. If you can't make it with him I would suggest choosing a career that does not require a college education
I am so glad I never read any of the previous comments.I probably wouldn`t have taken his class. Stephen is very approachable, and if you find his assignments confusing, its because you did not ask for clarity. If you pay attention, you will learn alot.Furthermore, if you read your notes and the texts, the tests will be easy.I thoroughly enjoyed it
Worst teacher ever, I DID invest all my time and efforts into this class and got nothing at all out of it. His lectures make no sense at all and I would never take one of his classes again. I wouldn't be surprised if those few comments praising him were posted by him.
He is brilliant. This course was amazing. If one has the slightest ability to come away from our North American bubble he/she will gain alot from his teachings in this course. Go in to learn and not just look for an easy grade.
He is very hard to follow along with in his lectures, they are long and boring, i Devoted ALL my time to his class but i got nothing out of it. If you need a place to nap, this is it
he is the most awesome, interesting and intelligent man in the world! u gotta put effort into this class, if u want an easy A go back to high school!!! he expects a lot, and thats the whole point of university! EXCELLENT PROF!!!
He looks like a cartoon character and has the most bizarre accent. He is very unorganized and it is hard to pay attention in class because his lectures are boring. He shows old videos from like the '70s. I slept through most of his lectures.
Although he's a bit disorganized, he is an excellent professor. He's always available to help his students and he's an invaluable resource for internship/practicum information. Although he marks fairly hard, he's very flexible about extensions on projects.
Excellent prof, possibly my favorite. His lectures are interesting and educational, even if all the material is not on the exam. I got an A but I had to work for it, which is NOT a bad thing
He's kinda quirky but a great prof. He's a very likeable guy and really committed to helping his students succeed.
I'm sure he's nice but if he keeps talking like that, SheepCounting101 will be a breeze. He makes it worse by letting us know that SOC101 is designed to bring up the issues that make the life we take for granted what it is. I say, Ignorance is bliss. I want to be interested but I truly believe it is a course designed to piss students off...sigh.
This was a good class, he is very open to debate, and keeps a good attitude throughout. A little long at times, but gives you all the facts if you pay attention.
Prof. Piper is a very good teacher. He is very smart and helpful. His class is sort of hard but with a little help it's easy.He always tells interesting stories. He's a very funny and nice guy. I recommend this class for anyone who is not lazy and wants an easy A.
don't take this class with this man. the subject is ridiculously interesting, and stephen himself is chalk full of hilarious anecdotes and great stories which have no relation to the lesson or the chapter we read. he talks so fast that you have no hope in hell of writing down the notes and he doesn't care, he just keeps talking about the fundamenta
Worst prof i've had- 3 hours a week of boredom. Exams are ridiculous - less about knowledge & more about how much time you have to study. Gives 50 terms to memorize & puts 3 on the exam. Heck, he didn't even mark the exams himself. Almost impossible to pay attention in class.. and made us buy a text book we never use. Waste of money all around.
he was hard but thats good because you learn that way hes not hot (and hes married) but hes funny and good at explaining stuff he made his class great!
All I have to say is he is really demanding!
Stephen is a hilarious man, very quirky. I left this class with pages of quotes from him. Hard marker, but very interesting; helpful when needed. I would take his class again.
This guy is hard, his tests are hard,he marks hard,& is boaring. The hardest and worst class i have ever taken. STRONGLY reccomend not taking his classes.
he was not help full we had to red the text book there was no prper structuer for notes he spoke too fast i will never have him as a prof ever again not recomended
piper is the worst prof i took ever..worst kind of learning methods including unorganized note taking...worst class in my whole life..
WOSRT PROF...very unorganized....cant handle how he speaks...if you want to know the day in the life of a soc prof...take this class
His classes are really hard to listen to. He has alot to say, but never really connects it. He doesn't give helpful notes, or a helpful lecture. He is very hard to udnerstand and his exams are only mutliple choice and very useless. I studied, and didn't do very good. Completely horrible class.
Where to begin? Nothing he reviews in classes is on the tests, and even if you do manage to catch a drift of what he's saying, it's useless come exam time. Take all the (terribly confusing!) notes you want, but it won't help.
He's a good guy but don't bother going to class. The time is better spent reading the textbook because his in class notes are worthless.
He does not treat students like children. He has the expectation of people to be adults and learn the material and then be able to keep up in class. If you don't want to do that, then don't take the class, but it will be a missed opportunity for you. The issues he talks about are very interesting and important!
I took this course last term and I am still wondering what the it was about. Notes are useless, Lectures are all over the place. and if i hear one more story about Nicaragua i was going to hang myself in the corner of the classroom. I can not repect a prof who was late every class and still took 10-15mins to set up.
informative
Buy the Text book, catch up on your sleep, lectures will put you to sleep anyway. Notes are non-existant, and lectures are longwinded and just dull.
Very boring, unfair tests, very hard marker.
Often late to class. Knows what he is talking about. Lots of videos used. Nice and approachable. However, his course seemed to lack a structure that would have made learning more effective.
A really great professor, know's his stuff.
Search for alternate options if you value your GPA. The text can be of great value, but he fails to discuss it, ever. The sheer volume of material is overwhelming, even for an upper level. Accurate notes suffer from a lack of structure. And you will have a hard time understanding what it is he expects from you.
too much work
Stephen is a nice guy but is a brutal teacher. He is impossible to keep up with and many of us in the class have a tough time keeping up with what he is saying because he talks so fast! His tests are hard and class notes mean nothing. I suggest not taking this class or any other class with him. Most of the class stopped coming after the midtern
Definatly keep up with your readings in this class. Assignments can be difficult to comprehend and help may be difficult to come by. Seems like he is headed in the right direction, but has gotten lost along the way.
information is very interesting, but perhaps the most dull prof i've ever had. did not explain what he wanted for anything. if you need the class, take it, but you're not missing out on anything if you skip it.
I had friends tell me not to take his class, but I didn't listen. Stupidest thing I've ever done. Do not take this class with him. You're better off waiting until you can get another prof. Really nice guy, really bad professor.
Lectures are difficult to understand.. learn to love your textbook!!!!!!!!(I mean it)
Make sure you read your text book(s)! His exams are more wordy then they need to be, and he's not all that clear for a first year course. Still a decent professor. A little on the boring side, but overall not bad. You just actually have to work hard in his class to get a good mark (go figure!)
He is always late for class. Material is dry and boring;assignments are unclear. Going to class is a waste of time because he rarely stays on topic. It's very difficult to take notes. Also, he takes quite a long time to mark assignments.
Huge disappointment. I was really looking forward to this class and the material, but Stephen kinda ruined it. HORRIBLE lectures, illegible notes that are completely irrelevant, and extremely off topic stories about Guatemala. Severely unfair marker and very unclear about expectations. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN!!
I really enjoy his class, he's funny and he does go off topic once in a while and tells stories, but they are still sort of relates back to the topic. One of my favorite professors.
He was great in the soc 250. Easily appraochable and articulate. Just make sure you read your text book in and out.
Read your textbook and be nice to him and he will give you a good grade :D His lectures are interesting, but the material is not on the exams.
His lectures were pretty bland. He scales back all quizzes and exams so everyone passes. If you study the textbook you can do good.
Know the book off by heart. His lectures can be interesting, hard to follow, not on the exam. Read the book, ask questions. He's a nice guy, obviously very passionate about sociology and very intelligent.
A super-dedicated, brilliant guy with a superb sense of humour! Knows how to teach: puts abstract stuff into concrete relevant examples - extremely clear communicator. Doesn't play games and is a true teacher.
Stephen doesn't use notes, so it's pointless to go to class. Just study the textbook and you will be fine. All his tests and quizzes are just multiple choice.
Horrible teacher! Take notes on what you hear because he doesn't write anything down. Tests are all hard multiple choice questions. Only 1 paper worth 35% of your grade. An extremely tough marker. Goes off topic every 5 mins for 20 mins talking about irrelevant stuff. Gives a 10 min break in a 3 hour class or sometimes no break at all. STAY AWAY!!
Most unclear teacher with high expectations. His exams are impossible. So much time is spent on an in class project that isn't even graded. Very very time consuming if you need an A. Honestly, if you're interested in world development and don;t need the course...just read a book about it on your own time. It'll be far more rewarding
Stephen is a very nice man. He concerns about his students, very knowledgeable. But do not take class with him. His exams and paper are VERY difficult. His lectures do not related to the textbook at all.
A very nice professor, however avoid a class with him. You have to work VERY hard at this class. If you take it do not take a full course load. This class is like 2 in 1. Class is not what I expected, and should be a 4th level class. I got a B- but had to work hard for it. Tests are brutal, and paper takes a TON of time to do. Class is a GPA killer
Stay away from this prof if you want to save your GPA, I read all the comments, half the class failed, its awesome course but if you can another school to take online and transfer your credit that would be awesome, test are super hard no matter how hard you study his expectations are not clear. Nobody ever gets above 80% in his class so skip it
This class is an absolute snoozefest. Most boring class I have ever taken. Marks really hard, quizzes are extremely wordy and what he says will be on the quiz never is. AVOID!!!
Don't listen to the majority of these posts! His tests and quizzes are hard, but he knows this and scales the grades. I remember doing not so well on my quizzes and feeling like I didn't do so well on the final, but I ended up with an A in the course. Sometimes the lectures can be dry, but Stephen really knows his stuff and loves what he teaches.
He scales all the exams and quizzes so don't worry! I thought I barely passed all of them and I ended up with an A in the course. Listen in class, take some notes, and read your text. He doesn't mark too hard on the paper either.
I took this course first year not even knowing what sociology was. He makes it very interesting and it's easy to listen to because he speaks from personal experience. He cracks lots of "dad jokes" and you can tell he really loves what he does. Test are hard but manageable if you study, minimal assignments, just have to show up and listen.
Terrible. Seriously stay away. Lectures are unorganized and taking notes is almost impossible. Your text book is your best friend. Trust me. Unless you want to hear stories about his family adventures to Nicaragua, avoid this class.
If you are looking to take an interesting Sociology class, do not take this prof! Lectures are long and boring, mostly filled with stories about his own past. You can easily pass this class if you were to only show up for the exams. Attendance is not mandatory. Become best friends with your textbook if you want to pass the tests.
Stephen is an extremely nice person and I feel bad about giving him a low rating, but his lectures are impossible to stay awake for. After the course, I know more about his past than I do about sociology. Your textbook teaches you everything, he does not. Lectures are optional. Extremely tough grader, definitely would not recommend.
I'm in full time courses right now and sociology with Mr Piper has by far been the easiest of all my classes. I disagree with him being a hard marker - our quizzes and midterm were multiple choice, and therefore the answers are very straight forward. I agree that the text is more important than note taking in class, but his stories are funny!
Stephen is a good prof. He stands in the front of the class and talks, no presentation or notes. I took many notes in class, but they were not of much use when studying, since his tests are based almost solely out of the text; make sure you read it. His tests are material heavy and he is a hard marker. I liked him and his class though.
Great prof! He gives a study guide for his quizzes and midterms, which makes it easy to get a good grade. Make the time to see him in his office hours. He truly makes an effort to help you out.
He is a fantastic Professor. I would recommend all students who wish to go down the path if Criminology to take classes that he teaches.
This prof is decent, he was great at explaining things when someone didn't understand but do not expect him to give it to you without your asking. If the course is condensed I do not recommend it as he didn't give us back ANY of our marks until the last week of class, way past the drop date. He is a fair grader..
I would only take this class if you are in the GDS degree. I needed electives, I have taken many SOC classes before and I withdrew from this one (as did half of the students). Lectures are long, scattered and boring. The text you are required to read is not reinforced in the lectures and I had no idea what he was talking about half of the time.
Learned next to nothing in this class! Lectures are off topic and really boring. Everything you learn is from the textbook so wouldn't even bother going to his classes, just read the book. Only took it because it was mandatory for my program. Glad it's over with.
Two exams ,two quizzes all multiple choice . Multiple choice is right or wrong so he's not a hard marker. Read the text and you will pass . Watch out for a paper work 30% and you must grab a coffee before class.
The lectures are long. It is really hard to take notes in class. In order to pass the class it is essential to read the textbook. The tests are only multiple choice and are worth 25% each.
He is very intelligent. It's not hard to take notes in his class at all. Very kind, but also follows the rules. If anyone were to take SOC101, I would definately recommend him.
Stephen Piper has a good heart but his lectures tend to ramble into personal life experiences. This wouldn't be a problem as they are quite interesting but unfortunately not on the test. Any reading assigned and required in order to pass. Fairly straightforward class, no real surprises.
Was a decent prof. alittle scattered, little funny, but overall worth it. should expect to read the book (its a must!)
You need to read the textbook! Lectures are long and hard to follow. He likes to integrate his life stories into his lectures. He is a kind person but not the best prof.
2 Multiple Choice Exams, 2 Multiple Choice Quizzes, one paper. Read the textbook, and study notes. It's that simple. Piper does seem to ramble on occasion, however he is funny, and his lecture are usually mostly interesting. An easy pass as long as you study.
I really enjoyed his classes. If you do your work you will do good just like any other class. I liked that unlike other profs who just read off the slides he does not. He lets you know whats on the test so if you study you will do good. I love how passionate he is about this course. Would deff recommend
Honestly, Stephens class is THE worst class I have ever taken... His lectures are boring and are very hard to follow along with. Also, get ready to read the textbook because that is where all the quizzes and exam questions are from. He also takes forever to mark the papers so dont think you will be getting it back before the final...
Tough marker on paper and his tests are all from the textbook.
Get ready for full 3 hour lectures. He is a gem and if you like the material then it will be a breeze, he is passionate and loves it if you participate.
Stephen's class is very boring and his lectures do not flow along or make sense. You could easily get an A in this class by simply reading the textbook, don't even need to show up to class. As a prof himself, he is not very clear and lectures all class long.
Stephen is a very knowledgable person, however, his class structure is very poor and the workload is excessive. His minimal lectures are hard to follow as he jumps to random points constantly. Any assignments were handed back extremely late. Midterm was not given back until the week before the final. Very unorganized for teaching a 3rd year course.
His lectures are so long. He just talks for the full 3 hours which is so boring. He does like to engage more with the class with lots of questions but he just talks the whole time. All of the exams are straight from the textbook. He gives you a study guide before the exam so pretty easy to do well. Just dont miss a class unless you can get notes.
all test and quizes are multiple choice, he will give you a review a week prior to all test and quizes. he talks for the whole 3 hours of the lecture, it is very boring.
I had him for 2 courses. The lower level is all memorizing but on the upper level his class is so much fun and worth the lower level prerequisite.
Great guy but the slowest (and hardest) marker! Also, he isn't too clear on the criteria
Professor Piper is very passionate about what he teaches. He is also very understanding of students in difficult living situations. The small homework was little, but a paper and a presentation assignment were issued. He does mark on the harder side, but not too much. He has a very positive energy, and his course is a one I'll remember.
HATED THIS COURSE. Worst class i've taken in my entire university experience. Unhelpful and discouraging to students who as for help.
he has long lectures and sometimes gets off-topic. he is overall a very nice teacher and has very good group discussions.
Stephen is awesome. His lectures get a bit off track sometimes, but they always still relate to the topic. He knows so much, so if you genuinely want to learn from him, you definitely will. Sometimes he's a bit unclear about what he wants, but he's very approachable. All in all, a great prof.
Let me just start by saying, if youre considering whether you should take a course with Stephen or not, just take it. Sure, he might go off on a tangent often but I personally think he does it to grab your attention. Hes funny, caring and despite being old, he is surprisingly open-minded. Attend lectures, do the projects well and youll be fine.
Do not take Stephen unless you have a great memory because the exam was over 100 terms that you had to memorize. His lectures are extremely boring and dry, had to stop myself from falling asleep many times. He also goes off topics and starts rambling. His assignments were very unclear and confusing.
Avoid this prof at all costs, no clear rubric for grading papers, takes forever to grade papers. The class average is 60% and the prof expects hours of work a week, suggests not having a job to accommodate full time course load. He is a very nice guy but don't let that fool you because this is one of the hardest classes I have taken at UFV.
I found most of the info from Stephen's 3-hour lectures to be irrelevant for the midterm and final. He marks extremely difficult for a first-year class if you even get your marks back. Textbook info was also difficult to digest and the papers had little to no criteria and no feedback given. He is a nice guy, very disorganized. Praying for a pass
His lectures are pretty good, lots of dialogue between the class makes them way less boring. He has a decent mix of tests and papers. He takes forever to grade your work, though, and there's a big disconnect between the lectures and the tests. The tests are mostly memorization, with a bit of critical thinking in the short answer questions.
He grades very toughly. The study guides we were given for the exam seemed like we never spoke about any of that information in class. He would tell random life stories that were interesting but had absolutely nothing to do with the class. It took months to get back papers and tests. The grading criteria were not clear. I would avoid his classes.
I took SOC 101 online in a condensed format and really enjoyed taking this class with Stephen Piper. He's very knowledgeable and has great stories to share. Although not mandatory, we had two online classes each week where we discussed the discussion questions in small groups. These classes definitely helped me grasp the material and do well.
He was a really lovely person but sadly avoid this prof. The PowerPoint lectures were sometimes over 20 slides, and most of the information was in paragraphs so it was hard to write notes for this class. He goes off long tangents as well. The instructions for his assignments were pretty vague and don't make any sense at all, just have hope it's right.
It's hard to understand his lectures, and he doesn't explain everything in detail. He's quite engaging with the class though, and is always willing to answer questions. He replies to his emails fine. He marks papers hard. He has three exams, and they're mid; based on lecture and textbook. Textbook chapters are long, and lecture is boring.
Don't take his course.
His classes are very boring, talks for 3 hours every time. If you are lucky he would play some videos. Most of the test is based on textbook material so make sure you read it every week.
Don't take this prof.
Don't take this professor because his lectures are boring and he grades harder.
Lectures can be dull, but the professor is willing to answer questions. For study prep, ChatGPT and Unstuck study were super helpful alongside the textbook. Grading is tough, but staying engaged and doing the work pays off.
Super easy class, lectures usually end 20mins early, exams are only multiple choice and if you review the study guide you'll get an A. One paper, marked easily if you follow the guidelines. He's very approachable and makes dull material interesting.
Took soc 101 with him, easiest class I've had so far. Lectures are pretty boring and he talks a bit slowly but quizzes are super light and there's only 1 essay. Just review key textbook points and you're good
