great teacher..but you have to turn the homework in every class...he's funny..tests are somehow a little bit tricky..
A very good teacher and an easy one. But sometimes he doesnt give a good explanation for his lesson and makes the problem even harder to solve. The good thing is he always tells you the questions that will be on the test. Recommended to take b/c easy to get A

Took him Fall 2004. I really enjoyed his class, hes funny and has a good sense of humor. He is hyper and explains things well. You have four tests that are non cumulative. Does not assign alot of Homework. He is very patient with questions, He collects homework once a week. I highly reccomend him.
I only have a chance to take one of his math class;I really enjoy his class. Understanding the concepts taught in class, doing homeworks, and reviewing the problems assigned as practice tests, you should do well in his class. Professor Plett is very reasonable when grading homework, tests,& final. I will STRONGLY recommend you to take his class!!
His tests are reasonable. Especially, when the final exam of this couse is long, he is happy to break the final into two days. He also provides two distinct final reviews for these two days. Therefore, Students know where to focus, and Students do no feel overwhelmed by the vast concepts. I like Professor Plett because he cares for his Students!

Math was never an easy subject for me but with Mr. Plett it's very hard not to get at least a C. He will make you do a quiz each week which are easy if you do the HW. Just study the quizes and you will do a good job on the Exams bc they are mostly the same things. He is also nice, but the bad thing is he will not be teaching math 100 in spring '06
His class is hard and you can't ditch or not study your homework if you want higher than a C.

I think that he's a great teacher and friendly when u have questions. And of course you're going to have to study and not ditch if you want a decent grade. I only had trouble when I was a bit sleepy, but that was my own fault hehe. Anyways, he's nice enough to clarify any questions you may have.
VERY GOOD teacher he loves math & is willing 2 explain to the stupid ppl how 2work problems (so if ur stupid, take him) hes tests are very straightforward (just pay attention in class, study the notes & do homework) willing to teach Very clear Nice Patient Dedicated Smart i didnt take math for 1.5yrs and i still got an A
He's an entertaining but not effective teacher. His notes aren't expansive enough and he doesn't cover enough material for you to do the homework. His tests cover 10 sections with one question per section so you have to guess which problem he'll put on the test. I never dropped a math class before until I took his class.
This guy is totally scatterbrained. HW had nothing to do with tests. He shows off his math skills in class but doesnt help you prepare for tests at all (OK MR PLETT you are a math diety just teach the freaking CLASS and show us useful stuff!!!!) He is a male version of Kelly Klassen. Super arrogant and wannabe astronomer, doesnt impress me at all.
Nice man, will make fun of you in front of everybody if you try to make a joke out of his class. Excellent explanations of Mathematical process, friendly attitude in lectures. KNOW THE H.W. then you'll feel good about the test, otherwise..... don't make the mistake of thinking he is supposed to make it easy for you. By nature, this is hard stuff.
Not bad, but doesn't do nearly enough examples. You'll understand stuff in lecture, but lost doing the homework. He wastes a lot of time telling stupid stories. Test questions are pretty tough, but if you pay attention to what he writes in red and study your notes you should be ok. He also throws his religious beliefs into lecture too, irritating!
I recommend going to class everyday and writing down every single example he gives you. Most test problems are very similar to his own examples, so make sure you really study your notes. He's a great guy!
Mr. Plett was a very smart and entertaining teacher. He explains things very simply, but so much so that you feel like an idiot. DO THE HOMEWORK. The test questions are taken from the HW. He explains everything in class, so if you attend, you'll probably get a good grade in the class. He tells funny stories, too.
This guy sucks! Honestly. Notes and hw were BS. Had nothing to do with TESTS. Very arrogant. TRUST ME. Don't take hime even if you have to. A waste of your time and money. He doesn't understand this nor cares. JERK!
I found that he is not helpful outside of class- but i took it in the summer. His lectures are simple and clear which makes a hard subject easy to follow. But his ex. during class did not provide adequate info. for hw. Much outside work & resources is required. Very difficult to get a decent grade if you are not a math genious.
Some of the information was difficult but Mr. Plett's teaching made it easy. He made learning fun during lecture by applying everyday situations that we could relate to. Great Professor and I would totally recommend his class!
He's a very good teacher. His tests are ALWAYS based upon homework and examples given during class. He's a little weird, but I've gotten used to it. VERY helpful during office hours, and he's often in the math lab.
He is an excellent prof. DO THE HOMEWORK. The test questions are taken from the HW. He explains everything in class, so if you attend, you'll probably get a good grade in the class.
Mr. Plett is a very difficult professor. His exam questions are tricky and he does not give much partial credit on test questions. I am very good at math, but struggled to pass Math 250. I would try to avoide him and find a different teacher if i were you...
He is really good at teaching math. he will make you laugh in class sometimes. He is teaching this class since spring 1984. so, i don;t think you can complain abt his teaching method. do the homework and attend all classes. ask him if u dont understand anything.....great teacher.
Very hard and useless teacher. He asks you to buy his book for $105. wHICH IS useless. If you want a bad grade take him. If you want to learn, find good teacher.
Plett is an amazing professor. Went into his class hearing a lot of negativity towards his "difficult-ness"; however, NOT true at all. He explains examples so vivid that the homework becomes very easy. Test questions exaclty like homework/examples. His class is test based, do all the homework, and visit him in office hours, he's extremely helpful.
He was a very hard teacher to understand. If your great at math then take him. He is very cheerful and has a great personality but his teaching method I just didn't like.
This guy is a math GOD. Sure, he's a hard teacher so don't get lazy. Bottomline: If you want to learn, take him. However, if you just care about the letter grade and not about the math, go find your lazy ass another teacher because Plett will pound you to the ground with math. I have taken him for four math classes (171, 172, 250A, 250B)
I love this professor... I took him during summer and i got A for this class... His test is basically his example in the class. Tell you what which opic will appear on the final.. He is highly recommended..
He is a great teacher. He is very easy to understand and very helpful when it comes to hmk. Take him and don't think twice.
he is great
Mr. Plett is a great teacher! He taught in a wa that was very easy to understand and grasp, and that makes learning a lot easier...if you go to class. I think he is great, and any student would be lucky to have him. The tests are modeled after the homework. In addition, he made me laugh, which is always a plus! I found him endearing!
He is a great teacher, 150B is a hard subject so be ready for it. He's very clear and neat about his lectures, he knows how to teach very effectively and orderly. He tells you what will be on the test. Avoid taking 150B during summer (4-5 hours of HW every night was really tedious due to summer shortness), take during regular semester instead.
Rarely collects homework, also gives sample test questions that are almost identical to whats on the test
Great Professor!! Willing to help out any student to make sure you pass.
Plett is great. Subject matter is difficult, but he doesn't bog you down with the minutia. Is very clear about what is important and what is on the test. Thoroughly covers topics. Exam questions frequently come from notes. Plus he keeps you interested. Tells silly jokes in silly voices, but is a nice change from the monotone of most math teachers.
ok here is the deal, he knows his math very well but he is a murder in grading. After every test i was sure im getting an A but since stupid plett graded them i get a B. when i go to his office to check why is that he goes like: hey you do not even deserve the grade i gave you i was just generous with you. bottom line dont take him
Great teaching, Horrible grading... dnt tell me that you are being fair or strict, you just like to take points off..... you will learn a lot, you will get a C if you pass!
Horrible grading...uncountable homeworks in a short time ....do not ever thinking about attending the class in a summer semester... you will just be able to end up with dropping or getting no- pass.. he is fine for regular semester... but the summer!
go to another instructor..Believe.. what people wrote down in bad way...if you think you are really a excellent student in math, you would be able to choose this class...
He doesn't even look over homework, I did the same problem 7 times and got full credit! He is an amazing professor, he makes everything crystal clear and gives you examples that will be on the exams. Math can be boring but hes always keeping everyone involved in class and makes it interesting, it was a pleasure to have him. Highly recommended.
Nice guy, horrible teacher. Extremely hard grader, no scientific calculators, and ridiculously hard tests. No thank you
Math God.
Learned a lot in this class. Clear lectures and his book for part two of the course was a lot easier to understand than a regular textbook. He has a genuine interest in his students and was willing to help me when I had problems. Exams are based on lecture and homework, if you attend all the exams and just attempt the homework you should pass.
Some people think that they are the only smart people in math.He is one of those. He tries to reveal himself how much he know about math. The problems in his exam are from his lecture, and he likes to do problems with his own way. Exams are extremely hard and grading is HORRIBLE. His lecture is not clear and he is not helpful at all. NOT RECOMMENDED
For tests you get no calculator at all. You can study his lecture all you want but come tests they notes will help you get a B or C, however if you remember the specifics of algebra 2, geometry, calc, and trig and their proofs you will do well(most likely forgotten). He's a professor that looks to take away points on tests not give. NOT RECOMMENDED
Don't take him for summer session, his tests are based off of his own methods not the methods you are told to do in your homework, you don't get a calculator which when most of the problems are graphing makes it more of a algebra/geometry review then calculus. People who get A's have old summer/fall tests to base their studying off on in Summer.
Professor Plett has a outstanding knowledge of math and does a brilliant job of teaching. He gets the class involved in solving the problem step by step which stimulates thinking and questions. His grading is stringent but at this level of math it should be expected. He prepares you for a university level class which makes it tough but rewarding.
Exams are based off his notes; much of the textbook material wasn't even covered. Answer questions FULLY (give examples) to receive full credit. Exams were relatively easy, but you will be docked a lot of points for not expressing answers in a way he deems acceptable. Gives you homework credit without checking answers. VERY helpful and friendly.
A very good math teacher. Definitely understands the material well enough to explain it simply. Might be difficult for some. Lots of time spent on HW. Grades HW for completion. Will teach you everything you need to know though. Answers all questions during lecture. Can be picky about details, especially if you did well on the rest of the test.
Hw is 7% of grade which he doesn't look at. Attendance is mandatory. 4/5 questions on exam are similar to hw. Other 4/5 are curveballs. He doesn't curve, no calculator, no equation sheet. He makes you memorize stupid proofs which are on the test. He knows his math for sure, but truly doesn't care if you succeed or not. Most of the class drops out
Plett is a good teacher in respect to lecturing and explaining the subjects. You`ll learn the material well but the only bad part is that it`s difficult to get an A. His exams are 10 questions and mostly medium difficulty but...he grades pretty hard and will take points off for the smallest error. Getting above a 90% is very tough. Most get C`s.
Mr. Plett is such a nice teacher and he clearly understands the math. He was able to teach it in a way that's simple enough to understand however he does pay a lot of attention to detail which can make it hard at times, but he is willing to help you with whatever you need.
Tough Class and hard grader, especially since he does not curve. Grading is simple, if you miss less than 51 points the whole semester, it's an A. Make sure you pay attention to the notes and be careful during exams bc he can be very picky
He will go around the class asking each student questions during lecture. I believe he belittles them for wrong answers. Also a very hard grader with tricky tests. On the other hand, His passion for the subject makes it interesting.
Multivariable calculus by itself can already be very confusing and challenging. I took him once in the Fall and had to take him again during the Summer because I failed the first time around. Lots of lectures, lots of homework. His tests are very difficult. Need to attend every class, take good notes, and pay attention. This is a very heavy class.
It's true, he goes through every row in class asking them a question during lecture. There is homework due every class meeting. No quizzes, just exams and homework. He does tell you which examples and sample exam questions. He doesn't drop any exams or homework.
3 tests at 180 points each. Which accounts for 90% of your grade. Homework makes up the rest. Some sections he is okay explaining the topic, others go to the math lab, and ask for help. Sometimes he will give examples of what is on the tests. Other times you get to guess.
Plett is the hardest and best math professor. His lectures are the best and clearest but his exams are very tough. He teaches very well and he expects a lot from his students. Getting a B is bit tough but getting an A is really hard. He grades harder than any other math teacher I've had. Math is my best favorite subject and I barely got an A.
Here's how a Plett class goes: Every single thing you need to know to get an A is presented in his notes. You don't have to read the textbook at all, or even understand the subject. As long as you memorize his tricky examples from the notes, you will get an A because that's all he ever puts on the test. Many who fail learn more than the A kids.
I pretty much got absolutely nothing from this class. He will give partial credit on some parts, and others that are more correct you'll get zero points. I've gotten about 900% more from watching youtube videos than attending class. He is nice but not that helpful, and he has some terrible office hours for this class.
Nice guy but I walk out of class having zero clue to the material that was "covered." He does occasionally give extra credit. His grading of tests is rather erratic. If you ask him about why he took certain points off he will explain. Unfortunately, much of why he takes points off are things that he should have gone over in class.
3 tests in this class. Occasional extra credit. He assigns homework but does not check to see if it is done, or correct. Don't expect to pass. His grading is not consistent on his tests. The tests have stuff that he does not go over in class, nor is it in the text book he wrote. The text book is a complete mess of errors that are easily fixed.
Very arrogant with his own notations. Even if your work is mathematically valid, he will mark you wrong if you don't do it his way. I got half credit taken off from a problem just because I used x,y, and z instead of a,b, and c. This old man loves his own favorite girls that get easily graded. He even tells them what to do during a test.
If you ask him for help, he is more than wiling to help. The exam difficulty is really low, however, you must do it the way he show you in class, including the same notation etc. So yes, use the a,b,c,... variable he uses. Not a difficult class, it is just his system.
The course itself is pretty hard to begin with. His homework is minor, but you need to do it for the points. He's a nice and funny guy, and is glad to help explain. However, his exams are nightmares. He gives partial credit, but the questions are brutal. Expect to sink a decent amount of time into making sure you get every concept perfectly.
He wrote his own book for this class but it is not enough to grasp the essential concepts of linear algebra. he employ's what he calls "nike-math" or "just do it math" meaning he will give you the method on how to solve but if you don't understand what is really going on you will get no where on his exams.
Mr. Plett's lectures have a lot of clarity to them. He provides a lot of examples if needed, has a decent office hour schedule, and is often available in the Math Lab. This class is not your typical mathematics course as it requires one to think critically as opposed to more computational classes such as the calculus series.
For those of you taking him for 250A, you're making a great choice. For those of you taking him with 250B, be prepared for him to show up late a lot. He's a very visual teacher, and he doesn't teach 250B as intuitively as 250A. His test grading is based on his reading convenience a lot so make sure to show your work the way he would do it.
Not sure why he has a reputation for being excessively difficult, his class is not that bad. You'll never have another math prof like Stephen; he's funny, caring, sweet, and he makes the material fun and interesting (not that it isn't already). A person worth taking for the good experience and when you leave? You'll know your stuff.
Plett is a really good teacher, don't get me wrong but he is extremely difficult when it comes to the test. He lectures problems and will say "this is just like a test question" or "this is a sample test question" and you better know these problems up and down because it will be on the test. He is very tough grader and a quiet talker, front row must
Plett is a pretty good teacher in respect to lecturing and explaining the subjects. Youll learn the material well but the only bad part is that its difficult to get an A.. There are 3 exams and Final with 10 question each. he grades pretty hard and will take points off for the smallest error. Getting above a 90% is very tough. Most get Cs.
A fantastic professor and person, his course requires quite a bit of work on your end. He lays the rules out very clearly and is by far one of the more charming professors I've ever had. If you do what is expected, which is a fair amount, you will come out both enriched and with the all-important 'A'. Class definitely felt like he cared.
Mr. Plett is a great instructor and teaches well. Be sure NOT to deviate from his whiteboard examples, as quite a chunk of partial credit will be deducted. Beware also, the auxiliary reports for his classes are not optional... they are not extra credit and count for your grade so don't take it lightly. Overall, fun professor, had him for 3 classes
Best math professor ever. Definitely will take again.
He's a good.. Be wary; he's a "teach 1+1, test 19*14.24" person, as in he only gives a handful of As by creating a bell curve. If you attend his lectures and do the homework, you will be well equipped to get a C or B in the class. The way to an A is to do problems outside of the homework set, or understand the material deeper than he presents it.
Professor Plett is a good professor, meaning he knows his stuff, but his class can be pretty rough if you try and study at the last minute for exams. In his class, you should be working on math everyday if you want to pass with an A or B. Make sure you take advantage of extra credit because it does help you! The majority of the class got a C or B.
One of the greats. His love for maths made me love maths. The exams were just like the homework, and in class examples. He is funny and will always make the topics interesting, albeit I slept a lot in his class. I've gotten a C and a B in his class, so I don't recommend him because he gave me good grades. I do so because he is a fantastic educator.
He is a good teacher and welcomes new ideas and questions. He also appreciates in-class participation by giving out "madeleines." He also passes on some silly math jokes and his truly dedicated for his work.
A great, knowledgable professor. For tests, just study notes and examples he gives in class. Sometimes he gives homework problems he's never talked about in class, but just look at Slader for that (those won't b on the test). His tests only have problems he talks about in class so just study your notes.
He is a lovely human being. I really enjoyed his class. It wasnt exactly easy but as long as you get a basic understanding of the subject and do your homework you should be fine.
One of those teachers who you can tell really loves what they do. Throughout lecture he throws in these silly impressions and jokes that keep the class engaged and focused, and he also teaches well. The tests are definitely harder than the homework, but he gives a detailed study list beforehand, so you should be fine. Great professor, I recommend!
Professor Plett is a great Professor! His lectures are great and he always gives sample test questions that are very similar to exam questions. He is very nit-picky about the way you go about solving in your exam, so make sure you are detailed and through. Do the HW and do his study guide and you should get B or A- for sure.
He is a very nice guy. Lectures are a little slow but he tries to be thorough and asks questions trying to get everyone to understand the material. He uses his own book which can is a little confusing so make sure to go to office hours of math lab if you need more help. Test questions are a bit confusing so if you need help make sure to ask for hlp
Plett's method of teaching diffeqs is fun, direct, and understandable. Lectures aren't super proofy since problem solving strategies are his focus. He doesn't try to trick you on exams, practice the problems he tells you to. Also pay SPECIAL ATTENTION to the steps to a "complete" & "full-credit" solution to do well on exams and not lose points.
this professor is my first f in this class due to his low voice and small font he wrote on the board. not forgetting his though grading for the exams. and if you are taking him for math 251 dont even dare taking this class only if you have a good background of the vectors.
Grades really unfairly. I took this class with my boyfriend and he would get much worse grades because Plett definitely plays favorites. I would get a problem entirely wrong and still get half credit, whereas my boyfriend would miss one section and get the same amount of points. Plett plays favorites in class and the grades show.
Plett is one of the best math professors I've had the pleasure of having. He clearly cares for his students and gives amazing lectures. His exams are not easy, but it's a fair test of your knowledge on the material, and he curves the exams if they were too difficult. Leaving this class I felt like I actually l had learned, which is rare for math :D
