i got B+ in all of my other english classes until ROSS! he ruined it all for me
I learned a lot from his class. Entertaining. Loads of Simpsons references.
a tough marker but writes loads of comments on your essays, he's average at best
A tough marker, but excellent at explaining literary theory
so what if i'm a constructionalist?
Extremely well-spoken. Quite a nice person, actually. Great teacher.
Great teacher. Very very clear. Hard marker, but very helpful.
Ross Rocks! If you want to actually learn something, take his courses.
Made theory very interesting and (amazingly clear). Take his class!
Hard, but you're going to learn something. GREAT notes on essays.
My favorite teacher!
kicks your ass with his marking, but enjoyable informative lecturer, even at 830 am.
Interesting lecturer, funny, in an intellectual kind of way. Hard marker, but I thought he wasn't unreasonable. strange selection of books.. I'm sorry, I hated them all. He made talking about them bearable though :) I'd take more of his classes.
Hard marker doesn't cut it: he's brutal and marks on a harsh Bell Curve. Incredibly knowledgable, intersting and hot, but only take *any* of his classes if you can afford the lowered GPA.
Interesting and engaging. Not a hard marker if you write well. Very encouraging on essays. Provides lots of feedback and works very hard to help students write well.
Semi-hard marker, but amazing suggestions on improving your essays. VERY encouraging and approachable. One of my favorite profs, and I definitely recommend taking his classes, but you have to work your butt off.
You will learn and improve a lot though, but just be warned that there are easier courses to take.
He's the type of person who tries to push his beliefs and opinions on everybody else, and he's damn boring. This class goes on forever.
Hardass, but in a make-you-better kind of way.Engaging lecturer. Great texts. Very knowledgeable. Good sense of humour, as long as you aren't easily offended, and don't like Bush.
Hard marker, not for the easily offended, intelligent, openly makes fun of the class pet which I enjoyed a lot. For those of you who think you are Einstein incarnated, you should take this class and be knocked down a peg.
He's arrogant; his face is cartoonish, and his hair...well, it's like a relic from the 50's. But this guy knows his stuff. Learn from him.
TOO ACADEMIC! Too much derivative crit. theory, too little heart. Get down f/ that ivory tower, stop excercising thoes (admittedly impressive) brain muscles so much, snap out of that cynical shell and tell us why you, and why we should, love literature.
We are lucky to have someone like Stephen at UVic. His level of academic sophistication is top notch, and his ability to give insightful feedback (especially on essays) is, in my experience, impeccable. Best of all, he's funny and very personable.
Brilliant, funny, approachable and incredibly helpful, Stephen is the best prof I've ever had. he is a pretty tough marker with some high expectations: reading the material isnt enough, you have to understand and come up with well thought out critiques.
You're not smart; Ross is. My mind was blown so many times during this class. I don't think literature will ever be the same. When Ross talked about wearing a cape while reading Althusser, he instantly became the most hilarious teacher I had ever met. If you're lazy and stupid take something else.
I love him.
Stephen is the hardest prof I've ever had in 4 yrs @ Uvic! Be prepared to work your butt off for a grade that's lower that you would normally get. He'll ask you to approach lit from a completly different angle than you are used to, what he calls "so what". Never again will I take 1 of his classes!
Too hard for me!
While not the most experienced prof, he is smart, intense, and courageous--not to mention cute and very funny. But he's my favourite prof because he forced me to grow intellectually. Years from now, he'll be the one I remember.
He's much easier than his reputation leads you to believe. Ross gives you so much direction for what he wants in essays that, if you do poorly, it's all your own fault. Plus he teaches cool authors, like Welsh and Burgess.
Had him 2 years in a row. In 461 he blew my mind, in 436B he was the dread of the term. Better at teaching criticism (maybe he tries harder) than novels. Seems to take pleasure in challenging a hotshot's GPA (not a bad thing). Tip: don't think he's organised and/or remembers who you are. He has no idea, but is too nice to admit it. Work hard.
Ross is arrogant and likes to think he knows everything. He is a hard marker. His thesis exercises were a good idea, but there wasn't enough time given to get a really good idea written down. Kinda like that proverbial fat kid you knew in school--the one who always boasted when he became king of the castle. "Ooh, I'm Ross, demigod of literature."
Ross is the HARDEST english teacher I have ever had at UVIC. His expectations are high. He also chooses some crappy books. However, he's very helpful.
Ross is very approachable, interesting and damned smart. You will work your ass off for a good grade from him and when you see a B on your paper and you start to feel defensive, you will look at his comments and go, "Oh man! He's right! I could have expanded on that!" If you want to learn something, take a Ross class.
My quibble with Dr. Ross is, why so few female writers on a 20th century course?
People complain about Ross being "too hard." this argument might be valid to many people, but these people are idiots. It's a 400 level course; it's not supposed to be bobbing for ****ing apples. There isn't even a final exam! Ross's lectures are stimulating and don't dance around tough issues, so expect to be offended but enlightened and amused
An arrogant **** who should not be a teacher. He knows what he's talking about and is no doubt highly intelligent but has no people skills whatsoever, is rude and obnoxious and unmotivating. I was incredibly intimadated by him. Maybe the next time an entire class "doesn't understand the concepts" he should take a look at the way he is teaching t
Tough class, however, one shouldn't expect theory to be entertaining. It's freaking tough, and yes Ross could simplify his language, but he's really great as a prof, and won't give up until you get it. Well worth the class, I actually feel like I'm getting my money's worth for the first time in 4 years at uvic. He's stimulating yet interesting!
What sets this man apart from the pool of merely brilliant and kind profs is the integrity and seriousness with which he responds to student work and questions. His expectations, the way he reads and responds show you - as nothing else ever has, for me - what good work is, how it's done. I know two or three other people who I respect as much.
While he tends to be unavailable and condencending during office hours, he is very well versed in theory. He knows what he's talking about. However, your GPA suffers regardless, which is awful if you WERE planning on an M.A. But at least he's hot in a overly-intelligent kind of way. Avoid if you don't want to pull your hair out & become miserable
Best prof I've had at Uvic. He's a tough marker, but he puts so many useful comments on your papers that actually will help you improve your writing, unlike many other profs. He's hilarious and the books he selected were a nice break from all the other literary crap I had to read. He's VERY helpful when approached out of class.
Hard marker but it's worth it. You will most likely not get an A but you will sure as Hell learn a few things. I know, learning at school? Who knew. His class is exrtremely hard, but for those of you planning an MA, he sets you up for what will be expected of you. I know when I do my MA, I'll be glad I had a prof like Ross to help prepare me
He puts the rad in Conrad, and the oolf in Woolf.
Brilliant. HARD HARD HARD class. You do learn a lot though.
Hell! Learnin' ain't no fun!
The other 58.5 credits in my degree can't compare to the knowledge gleaned in Ross's class. Your GPA will suffer (hardest marker I've every come across) but taking his class is well worth it if you want to understand the mechanics behind this discipline (English) - if you want to uncover new tools with which to engage text and the culture around.
Ross has mastered the art of terrifying students on the first day, especially with his syllabus (i.e. Ulysses), but don't be scared off. He is ambitious for all his students and expects more than any teacher I've ever had, but it's worth it if you're serious about Modernism. His lectures are also hilarious.
This is my favourite professor. Very hard marker though, but he managed to make a difficult subject (lit theory) interesting and funny, I can't see a lot of other professors being able to do that. Well worth all the work, trust me.
Dr. Ross keeps class completely interesting and is hilarious. Though he does expect a lot, I didn't find his course especially tough. I completely recommend taking his (Ulysses) class.
Dr Ross, I could tell, was trying to help us. He wanted to be engaging. Only he's not especially successful. Bitter, negative sense of humor. Superficial readings: you'll read about 40 novels per semester, and truly understand none of them. Overall, some points for effort (he's trying!) but a prof I would not re-take, because he turned me off.
Stephen Ross is by far my favourite prof at UVic. It was a hard class, but he is knowledgable and passionate which makes it all worthwhile. Would absolutely take anything I could from him.
Stephen Ross has a truly brilliant mind, and (depending on the student) he is excellent at sharing it. Avoid if you despise heavy reading. Also avoid if you are easily offended; he makes a point of being a bit of a rougue professor, mostly for the sake of liveliness. Essential for anyone even slightly interested in modernism. He is also hilarious.
He is so critical. His readings are difficult. He assigns a ton of work.
He is so critical to understanding contemporary theory. The course readings are difficult (Duh!). He assigns a ton of necessary work (to understand those difficult readings).
He did not say one nice thing to any of his students all semester. He will take up class time to tell you how great his academic achievements are and how bad his students write. If the man actually paid attention to helping his students write his intelligence might actually be put to good use.
Easily the best lecturer I've had at UVic. Engaging, energetic, has mastered to art of relief tandems. Puts effort into the course, expects you to as wells. Quick to return assignments, helpful criticism. Knows what he's talking about.
He speaks clearly, but that's about it. His door is often open, that's a bonus. He's on the other side though, and that's a minus. He inherited the Intro to Critical Theory course that is the segue between undergraduate thinking and graduate- level thinking, and he has zero compassion for the students making that transition.
He made lectures interesting and funny, and the readings are varied so everyone will like something. Tried to get the class to participate but our class wasn't particularly energetic... Never went to his office hours, but his door was open almost every time I walked past.
Stephen Ross made my class the most interesting that I have ever taken. He is smart, witty, and informative- making english class as enjoyable as possible. He is HILARIOUS and taking english 230 will never be a letdown. I hope this course is offered at uvic again because it is the best one I have ever taken.
Stephen's understanding of theory and Modernism seems unparalleled. Be prepared for rigorous marking and a witty, challenging course.
Funny and charismatic. ENGL230 was a lot of fun and he made it very interesting. Be ready for class/group participation. Ross was a super easy marker; both on assignments and midterms. The final was the easiest final I have ever written. Get ready to read a lot of material and to cover a lot of ground in class. Pay attention, all based on lecture.
Professor Ross said that English Majors have to know about everything (history, economics, politics etc). He then tries to put down Engineering majors to make english majors look better by claiming that Engineering majors have the highest unemployment rate in Ontario. He also makes a lot of inaccurate political comments about the United States.
Dr. Ross is one of the funniest personalities at UVic. His 100 and 200 level courses are easy enough to follow with simple tests and assignments and expectations are laid out ahead of time. He clearly knows his stuff and is incredibly relatable and interesting because of his sense of humour. Take an undergrad class with him. You will not regret it
Great class, lots of reading, totally worth is for someone who likes to read!
An excellent prof, hilarious, very funny. Makes an effort to get to know his students - I took a class with him last semester and he still says hi to me when I pass him. Engaging lectures, values student input and willing to talk to students outside of class. Would definitely recommend him as a prof.
Dr. Ross is one the funniest men I have ever met. This 1st year English course was taught exceptionally well in a way that was interesting and thought-provoking, but also relatable and entertaining. Everyone should take a class with Stephen if given the chance. He's a real beauty.
I had Dr. Ross for a class on erotic literature which was my favourite class of all time. His lectures were hilarious but nuanced and informative. Dr. Ross gives honest and helpful feedback on papers and helped improve my academic writing significantly. Amazing at curating course materials as well and made class worth everyone's time.
Great prof!
Stephen is a legend. Never in my life have I had such a chill, hilarious, laid back prof. Erotic writing is an amazing course and I did actually learn quite a lot. I'll definitely take any course with Stephen, and I highly recommend that you do too.
Stephen Ross is one of the most entertaining people I have ever encountered. Absolutely hilarious. I looked forward to writing his exams because the multiple choice questions were so creative. He's not one for poetic essay writing - lean towards critical wit. Overall, super low maintenance class that took up a minute amount of time and energy.
One of the few classes I genuinely looked forward to every week. Dr. Ross's lectures were hilarious and the class overall was very easy. The assignments were vague and grading criteria were often unclear, but the class was overall great. The midterm/exam were definitely grade-boosters. Some thought his grading was tough, but I think it was fair.
Omg Stephen is fantastic. After taking his Erotic Literature class, I can confidently say that this man is a national treasure. he is funny, sweet and real. He doesn't shy away from the nitty-gritty but he also doesn't excuse it. He delves DEEP. His lectures are super engaging and always a fun time. A very big people person. Take his classes!!!!
This is my second class I've taken with Stephen and I look forward to taking more in the future. He is hilarious, and I have never met a prof who cares for their students more. The assignments for this class were enjoyable and it peaked my interest on the topic we were discussing. Do yourself a favour and take his class. I promise it is worth it.
Stephen is such an incredible professor. His class on Ulysses reignited my dying passion for literature. His lectures are best described as riveting. He's super funny and down-to-earth (but not unprofessional) and he's probably the most understanding prof I've had in my three years here. Please take a course with him. You will not regret it.
Erotic writing was one of my favourite classes I've taken at UVic. Stephen wants his students to do well, is very approachable, & provides good feedback. The midterms are super easy and grading on the papers was very fair. 10/10 a super enjoyable class, and a breath of fresh air. Papers provided a chance for creative analysis and I learned a lot.
Took Ross for the first time for a history 200 course with Colby. Not only is he super intelligible, he is extremely engaging. He is a great speaker and times his humour perfectly every-time. He marks slightly on the harder side but honestly he gives 10/10 feedback pushing you to do better on the next assignment. He really gets the best out of you.
Had such a good time taking erotic lit with Stephen. Made the class so comfortable and fun. I will ABSOLUTELY be taking another class with him. Cannot recommend him enough.
had a great time with dr. ross in erotic lit even though it was at 8:30. The lectures were engaging and funny, it was a great way to start the day. the feedback the helpful for the next paper and always out before the last so that you could continue to improve!
This is my fourth year at UVIC and I can confidently say that Dr. Ross is the best professor I have ever had. He is absolutely hilarious, and clearly cares deeply about the well-being of his students. This course is fantastic. He fosters a really comfortable classroom environment, and I would gladly take literally any course he teaches. LOVE!!!!!!!
One of the only profs I've had who seems to care about teaching and helping students rather than just circle-jerking his own ideas and seeing the students as secondary to the job. Amazing lecturer and keeps you engaged the whole time, I even brought friends to this class to experience the lecture.
Dr Ross was an incredible prof that made me not completely hate English class. His lectures were funny and engaging, and we had like 6 assignments that were all fairly easy.
Class with Stephen is super fun, I didn't ever want to miss class! He practices "ungrading" so the class isn't too stressful because he focusses on your growth throughout the semester instead of your final products. Still work hard and show up to class though!
ENSH 222 was such an amazing class with Dr Ross. He's absolutly hilarious, which made going over sensitive topics easy. He goes over each of the readings, and his tests are super funny/straightforward. You get 2 attempts for testes which are all multiple choice, and you also pick your own readings. Which made for a lot of freedom.
Hey Stephen is probably the best professor I will have at UVic. The way he gave his lectures and related the materials to historical and cultural moments provided a great educational experience. He was super engaged in in-class discussion and really cares about what he teaches. Super inspirational- please take his classes!!
Stephen is genuinely one of the best professors I'll have at UVic. Lectures were structured amazingly and he cares so deeply about his students. He was always invested in class discussions and clearly cares deeply about what he teaches. Def take his class if you can!!!
