Amazing prof!!
Nice enough guy, but poor film prof. He's the type of teacher who gives film programs a bad name: strong background in another field, tenous grasp of film basics. FYI, Scharper: fastforwarding through "unimportant parts" of films is a big no-no.
I think he's great! Not only is he VERY easy on the eyes, but he's very sweet and approachable. I really admire how much he knows and brings to the classroom. Bravo!
fairly easy prof, but not exactly a scholarly film critic. at times he will pause a film to highlight something; took away from the film as a whole. also wasted lots of time trying to get the dvd player to work. good readings though.
Nice prof. but does not get into any substantial depth with the material. Would make good HS teacher. Checking attendance in university lectures? Give me a break! On top of that, made the class my his crappy book which we read next to none of.
Excellent prof, very influential in showing objective views on religion and the environment. His approach is one that is based on compassion and a true care for the students he teaches. Has instilled many morals, vlaues, and idea in me that I never thought I would ever realize. Truly a magnificent professor as well as person. He is one of a kind...
best prof ive ever had in my life
nice prof. waste of a textbook - even tried to sell his own book for the course! doesn't go into any real depth. took attendence and grades high on participation
It's hard to tell when he's just rambling on about a story or actually giving relevant facts that should be noted. Basically, I have no notes for this course. It seems like most of the course is common sense. Readings are easy.
very nice and helpful
I found him sort of annoying during most of the course, especially because he goes on and on about things that one would anyway know. He's sort of funny but that's only because you're laughing at him not with him.
He's a bad professor. The contents of the course is essentially teaching us nothing. We don't really learn nothing about environment. The only thing he does is to incorporate religion into environmental studies by saying that we should value our nature. You don't learn anythng but an easy course. If you wanna get a good mark then take it.
The most caring and enthusiastic professor I have ever had a chance to meet. Actually takes time to get to know his students and always asks how you felt about the lecture and assignments. Very welcoming and considerate unlike other UTM profs who dont care about their students. Absolutely LOVE this professor.
He is the WORST prof I have ever had. He teaches nothing in lecture and always asks the stupidest questions that you dont even know why you have to know that. Literally there is no point of going to lectures because you learn NOTHING about the environment.
The kind of prof that makes you buy his text book. The text had little relevance to the course and the majority of the readings were from a course reader anyways. I also became uncomfortable with his constant use of Christian theology to prove arguments. I signed up for intro. to environmental studies not Sunday school...
It's almost embarrassing that this material is taught at such a highly rated establishment; the focus on the environment is almost nothing (the science of the environment is completely ignored). The focus of his class was entirely a spiritual connection with the environment. This theological approach made me feel very uncomfortable.
Attended all his lecture and always comes out with no notes or few sentences. It does not seems like an environment class but more like a religion class. He made us buy his textbook where is irrelevant to the class and course pack where you can find all the articles online. He would expect us to rmb which author wrote which book for the test.
If you have lecture notes (whether you take them yourself or get them from a friend is fairly irrelevant) and you do the readings, you're pretty much golden. The midterm tests were incredibly easy, and from what I hear, the final will be as well.
Amazing person overall
Terrific lecturer. Really passionate about the material and very helpful. And he tries to make the classes engaging.
Pleasantly surprised by how much I learned. Amazing lecturer. Very eloquent. And he really is passionate about the environment and works hard to make the classes engaging.
He is very passionate about the environment and is a very good person. I actually expected this course to be somewhat interesting as I took it as an elective. I ended up learning all about the dead people who cared about the environment and who said what, but not about the environment itself. Kind of disappointing.
This is by far my best class so far. Prof. Scharper combines audiovisuals, in-class discussion, and guest lectures in a really neat way. Great sense of humour. but also really helpful worldviews approach to the environment. I was sad to have the class end!
BEST. CLASS. EV-ER.
I really enjoyed coming to class. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the TAs were present and helpful, and set up extra office hours and an info session for the final. Also the professor was knowledgeable and involved himself in current eco debates--and he is easy on the eyes. I think this course should be mandatory for all first years.
He's a pretty laid back professor but is still very engaging and enthusiastic about lecturing. It's not difficult to get an A as long as you do all the readings. You don't learn about the environment itself but more about the environmental movement and the context of it.
I was really impressed. He is the most down-to-earth but intelligent prof. I have had. He is the most beloved prof. at UofT.
Dr. Scharpe ris the best prof. I have had in my 4 years here. He breaks the moUld as a professor. His lectures were engaged and stimulating, he was considerate of every student, the films and lectuers were AWESOME, and he even made a special effort to attend our graduation.
A fabulous course.
What a lively course! Guest lectures, field trips, engaged class discussions, this was by far my most "alive" course at UofT.
Professor is amazing and he has the best TAs I've ever had (Rachel and Natalie), they bent over backward to help me when I hit problems. The guest speakers were all interesting. Tests are a bit tricky but if you attend every lecture and take notes, you should do well. Every undergrad should take this course.
Most intro courses have PowerPoint slides on BlackBoard, but for this you have to show up, and have conversations in class. I liked the interaction and learned a lot. Great TAs as well. The prof. was upbeat and approachable.
Though it was an tinro class, I was surprised at how much I learned.
A first-rate course.
Very good course. It changed the wary I look at the environment. It should be required for all first-years.
A fablous course. Great discussions and readinsg, and excellent field trips. I loved coming to class!
Dr. Scharper is, without a doubt, the best prof. I have had at UofT. He is warm, astute, humane--and cute! I only wish he taught more classes. We need more like him!
At first, I was unsure how effective this class was. There is a laid-back atmosphere and the readings are not overwhelming. But as the class went on, I realized I was actually learning a lot, and digesting the readings more than in my other classes, where they are just piled on. It turned out to be one of the best and most memorable classes ever.
A fabulous course. Each class was different, with guest lectures, field trips, discussions, presentations by students, films, etc. I learned a lot more than I expected. He is by far my favourite prof.!
Dr. Scharper is a terrific professor. He is well-orgnized, informed, and kind, and his lectures were quite engaging. They combined AV clips, neat graphics, and time for class interaction. The subject matter and readings were also challenging. As a result of this course, I switched my major to environmental studies.
Stephen Scharper is just amazing. After taking his ENV100 class I decided to add an Environmental Studies minor to my degree. His lectures were awesome, as he had guest speakers, he is crystal clear in everything, approachable, and his tests were straightforward.
Nothing but the best. This is by far the best course I have had thus far.
Love this professor and love this class!
Prof. Scharper is excellent. This is the only course I have taken that really encouraged and appreciated a creative apporoach to learning.
When I think of an ideal professor, I think of Prof. Scharper. He is informed, engaged, interesting, and he really cares about his students. He is also easy to look at, and I love his voice!
Like many of the others, I was blown away. Took this in my first year, and upon reflection, it really was one of the best educational experiences in my life. Talk about out-of -the-box. He inspired me to pursue the intricate subject of the very large picture of 'the environment'.
Best course of my undergrad thus far, bar none.
This was by far the most intellectually stimulating class I have ever taken. Prof. Scharper is remarkable, and made it a rich, insightful experience. I would definitely take any other course he teaches.
This course absolutely changed my life! I have now incorporated environmental ideas and projects in both my personal and academic life thanks to Prof. Scharper. He is a very special person.
Truly passionate, kind, genuine and knowledgeable. One in a million teacher.
Prof. Scharper is phenomenal. This is by far the most dynamic and frutiful course of my undergrad. We need more profs. like him!
Great prof, but do your work!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was a terrific course. It really changed the way I looked at the environment. And the guest speakers and nature walks were all part of a truly transformative learning experience. And Prof. Scharper is the most eloquent prof. I've ever had!
Prof. Scharper is by far the best prof. I have had at UofT. He is charismatic, passionate about his subject, and approachable. He is a genuine person. And his book really was helpful to read, not a drag. I actually was excited to come to class.
Amazing professor. The enthusiasm he brought to every lecture was contagious.
This is by far the best prof I have ever encountered. He was so inspirational and really made you care about the content of the course. I was so excited for every lecture, and really enjoyed being in this course. As long as you attend lectures and do the readings, you should do great. Tests and grading were very fair, and the content was awesome.
Best professor I had at U of T. He is so passionate about the material and teaches it well.
Easily the best and most engaging professor I've had at UofT. ENV100 is pretty easy to manage as long as you complete all of the readings; the readings can be a bit dense but I found the subject matter very interesting and eye-opening.
This class was great!! The readings were interesting and only briefly discussed in class. We went on a lot of field trips and nature walks. It is clear Professor Scharper loves what he is doing, and I truly appreciate his passion for the environment, indigenous cultures, and mindfulness. His very being has inspired me to aspire to be like him.
Amazing professor! Made my first year at UofT positive. Super caring, friendly, and understanding. Brings chocolate to class, super passionate about what he's teaching, and incredibly inspiring. He is AMAZING.
He is all over the place. Not clear at all with handing out assignments. Keeps making irrelevant comments regarding religion. Keeps losing focus on what the objective of the course is. I think this man is definitely on shrooms!
good prof n passionate about the stuff he teaches.
Professor Scharper is one of a kind, he is truly the best professor I have ever had. He cares deeply for his students and their learning experience. He utilizes different modes of presentation (lecture, reading, video, guest lectures) to teach and is very clearly passionate about course material. He engages students to think differently. The best!
Prof Scharper is such a refreshing instructor because he approaches teaching more holistically, encouraging reflection and emotions. The only issue I had with the course (ENV333) was that we almost exclusively had guest lecturers and few lectures from Prof Scharper.
This was the most intellectually interesting course I have taken in 3 years at UofT. The material was diverse, and I appreciated how Prof. Scharper brought to class former students who are now working in environmental careers to share their insights with us. He is also kind and approachable. I hope to take another class with him.
Prof. Scharper is the best prof. I have had at UofT. His class was great. He encouraged discussion and created a dynamic and creative atmosphere in the course. His book and writings also changed the way I view environmental issues. I love his approach!
AMAZING. Favourite course, by far. So lovely. Prof, Scharper really cares about the mental wellness of his students. Smart and engaging.
Probably one of the most engaging and entertaining professors I have had yet! I really enjoy his spontaneous lectures (typically not very structured) and attempted humour. I would say that he is a great person but I don't think I have learned much from this course. Regardless, love this professor so much!
He is a very caring and easygoing professor, but I wouldn’t take this course unless you’re fine with very strong religious undertones (we’ve been to the Catholic Church/youth center 4 times this year). Very loose, discussion-based structure. Easiest A and chillest bird course of my life. Still, I would have chosen a different Trin One stream.
He is relaxed and sensitive to student concerns. He also is very well connected in the environmental field and brought in amazing guest lecturers. He is a fair marker and really passionate about sustainability. I hope to take other courses with him.
By far my favourite class at UofT. Prof. Scharper is very knowledgeable and dynamic as a lecturer, and even made Zoom classes enjoyable and interactive! The TAs and guest speakers, including an Indigenous poet, were also terrific. Take this course!
I loved this class! Prof. Scharper was an inspiration. He facilitated discussion with the students and guest speakers with ease, and allowed us to pursue creative projects for our major assignments. I felt my mind being opened to wider, deeper connections to the environment. I am so grateful to have had a course with him!
Prof. Scharper was the most intellectually stimulating prof. I have had at UofT thus far. He broadened my notion of environment, and help me get a clear focus on what I want to pursue in my studies. He is a gem.
Prof. Scharper was an excellent prof. He was super engaging, and the guest speakers related the readings to real-life issues. And I loved his "Dad" jokes! If you do the readings and show up to class you should do fine.
Prof. Scharper is very caring, and created a class milieu in which students were able to explore ideas in a non-threatening manner. I think we all grew as intellectuals and as persons through his course. I think all graduate students should take this seminar. He is a stellar educator.
I loved this class! Prof. Scharper was engaging, and really helped us think through deeper issues of sustainability. I felt that I was able to get a wide-angle, interdisciplinary perspective. I can't wait to take another course with him!
I took this course in first-year, and now, several years later, I realize it was my best course at UofT. Prof. Scharper encouraged original thinking, not rote memorization, and celebrated rather than squelched creativity. I wish there were more profs like him.
Prof. Scharper is remarkable. This was my best class at UofT. It really felt more like a weekly discussion about environmental worldviews. The weekly papers were helpful and handed back with helpful comments. I would take any thing else he teaches.
This was my best class all year. Prof. Scharper is deeply engaged in environmental issues, and introduced us to the importance of connecting with nature. The field trips were awesome. I am so glad I decided to take this course, and hope to take his ENV 333 next year!
Prof. Scharper is fabulous! This course opened my eyes to so many dimensions of the environmental movement, and it was done without a lot of doom and gloomism. The prof. is an amazing presence in the class, fostering great dialogue and bringing in amazing guest speakers. A highlight of my university career!
He is insightful and respectful. If you have a chance to take a course with him, take it! He really encourages thoughtful and creative thinking. Such a breath of fresh air at UofT!
Prof. Scharper is not only an excellent teacher, he is a remarkable person, who has a real passion for the environment. This class helped us all find a new way of relating to the environment. It was a great experience.
Prof. Scharper was the best professor I had in first year. He is super knowledgeable and caring. He also is very well-connected, and our guest speakers and field trips were amazing. I would urge all Trinity One students to take this class!
I found this course very enjoyable. I thought the class was inviting and encouraging and I found the prof. always motivated me to do my best and contribute in class. The assignments and marking were extremely fair and what I enjoyed most was the choice available to the students for major assignments.
This was my favourite class at UofT. Prof. Scharper is excellent. What I really appreciated was the tone of the class. The environment is not as "stifling" as most other courses I've taken. The instructor is both knowledgeable and approachable. I would take any course he teaches.
Prof. Scharper is one of a kind. He is the best prof. I ever had. He is so clear and kind. Love him!!
Prof. Scharper is caring, knowledgeable, and super approachable. He welcomes student input, and the discussions we had in class were amazing. He is one of the most creative profs at UofT, and allowed us to be creative in our assignments. I would encourage all students to take a course with him.
Fantastic prof! My best course at UTM by far. The sit spots and nature walks really put us in relationship with nature and the readings. Love him!
This was a fabulous class! Great lectures and really neat guest lecturers. I wish he taught more classes!
Best class ever!
Prof. Scharper is very knowledgeable, and he incorporates nature walks and immersion in nature. He is excellent, and you learn so much in the relaxed but intellectually rich environment of the class! I hope to take other courses from him.
