Selph is absolutely amazing. He really works with students, he is clear, and he is encouraging. Not an easy subject but Selph is wonderful. Tests are hard but straightforward. Homework sometimes takes a long time to complete but he'll help you if you don't understand. Everybody says Selph is wonderful and he really is.
Great lecturer; he should hold a seminar for other teachers (in all fields) on lecturing techniques!
One of Lane's best teachers, in any subject! Steve is the best teacher, he's crystal clear in lectures, and extremely helpful. If you show up to his office during office-hours, he'll go over all your homework with you, which is very helpful. He gives helpful review sheets for tests, so there is othing unexpected. Thanks Steve!
Best math teacher that I have had! Ever time I register for a math class, his name is the first one That I look for. He is great at explaining things, and really is there for his students.
I really enjoyed this class. He clearly described the material, and made it easy to understand. You would do exercises that were relevant to what you were learning and then he would explain it step by step in class. There is a lot of homework assignments but he is always available for help. He also lets you do one redo test.
Great teacher! He explains math- which is not an easy subject- beautifully. He is methodical and organized and fun. Best math teacher I've ever had!
I agree. Perfectly Crystal clear, I love the format of the class, he even is open to suggestions for how to change the class. I am a pretty good math student so I got a good grade. His tests are long and moderately difficult, but fair and he grades fairly with partial credit etc.
He is very good at explaining the material and finding the simplest way to apply the knowledge. He loves math and wants everyone to understand it so he will wait to make sure you are getting it. His tests are very long and somewhat complicated. I would have had a much better grade if I had had more time to finish tests.
I took math with Mr. Selph in 2003. He is extremly helpfull and a great instructor. I used to love going in his class, because I knew he would make the subject clear. LOVE MATH, WITH STEPHEN SELPH.
Great teacher! Steve was able to make me understand things I have been unable to for years.
I do agree with everyones comments about Steve. I will truly miss him after this term. For a math teacher Steve is soooo patient and kind. Also, for those of us with math test anxiety, he lets us take tests in the math testing lab. It helps, cause his test are long and complicated!
Selph is an amazing professor. He was amazing at lectures, he made everything seem so clear. He was intelligent to. He writes his own homework that is so helpful. He is really nice too. He is perhaps the best math professor at LCC.
Great professor! Loved taking this class from him. He is so helpful. He actually cares about his students which is rare in professors.
He knows what he is doing, and how to teach students effectively. Really easy going and never turn students down from questions. extremely helpful!
Hands down the best math teacher at Lane. Why he is not at an Ivory college getting paid twice as much is beside me. Literally the best math teacher in Oregon. Take Selph.
I have never had an instructor that made himself more available to his students when they needed help. He was also very willing to explain things multiple ways for those who did not understand the material the first time. If you want to be sure to pass math 111 the first time around, I would definitely recommend Selph as your instructor.
I've taken MTH112, 251 & 252 from Selph. He is an excellent teacher, especially to those who struggle with Math. Personally, I think he could do more to challenge us to think and be more creative, but many would argue that isn't what math is about. Overall, excellent professor, take him if you have the opportunity, and want a clear, concise class.
He's a great teacher. The best math teacher I've ever had. I highly recommend taking his classes! He is very clear and he makes sure that everyone understands. He makes it very easy to ask questions and he articulates very well. You can tell he loves what he does, and he's very good at it!
very good teacher! i understand everything that he has taught
Great Teacher, would recommend and take any classes of his I could.
He's the greatest math teacher i'd ever had. I was an international student and couldn't understand English well, he was so helpful to explain me those long questions. P.S. Two exam were NOT allow to use calculator.
Greatest Math teacher at Lane he's super sweet has a lot of office hours would take him every chance I get. You do need the book tho
Stephen Selph is the best math teacher I have ever had. He makes complex math easy and has a good time doing it.
Great Teacher , very clear
Very helpful, very clear, great communicator
Easily one of the best instructors at Lane!!!
he is really picky about marks, erased or not. He wasn't a bad teacher, I just couldn't understand everything he tried to explain.
Steve is just totally awesome! I got to have him for Math 65 and chose to take Math 111 in the Spring!
Steve took time to have a class before all of the tests, that students had the option of coming in, to have questions answered. One of the days was even a Sunday! He knows what he is doing and is chrystal clear on the way he gets it across! He is by far THE best instructor I have had, and would take him for all my Math classes if I could.
Best teacher I have ever had! Wants everyone to succeed, grades everything extremely fast, gives feedback on tests, and is wants everyone to come to his office hours to ask questions! Very motivational, and really intelligent guy.
I would take him again.
Where should I begin? Steve is a remarkable teacher. Very clear and precise on everything. Can't say enough. Incredible teacher definitely one of the best. Connects with students on all levels and very professional.
It's not that Selph is easier than other math profs, it's that he puts more effort out & is more welcoming than most profs & it makes his class seem easier. Steve's one of the best. Don't expect a cake walk, show up to his office and use his hours, he wants to help and it shows. Don't fear being judged with Steve, just tell him you don't understand
I took a hybrid 111 class with him. He is very nice, organized, and if you ever need help, ask. He was always more than happy to explain something or make sure I got in to talk with him about any issues. I highly recommend him if math gives you any difficulty. Good teachers can really help you in a subject that you aren't so confident with.
Mr. Selph is awesome. Perfect math teacher
Mr. Selph was the best teacher I have ever had. He helped me overcome my math testing anxiety. His teaching style was engaging and open. I like that he is non-threatening and gentle. Highly recommended!
Awsome teacher, one of the good ones. Very organized and clear.
Best math instructor ever!! Makes must more sense than any other instructors. There is a lot of homework, but thats how you learn.
Steve made calculus accessible and interesting. He is a very gifted and kind teacher and I would recommend him to anyone taking calculus. Thank you Steve!
Great Teacher. Easy to understand. He is very helpful and understanding. I would recommend him to anyone.
This class isn't easy. Or at least not for me. I met with him to go over HW almost every day and went to tutors constantly. But my grade is not Stevens fault. He is very organized and very helpful. He will set up appointments with you to go over things, he sets up study sessions for tests, and he will drop a test grade if you have good reason.
Professor Selph is the rare type of teacher that is both really good at math and really good at explaining it. I can honestly say I've never had a better math teacher. He's on time with his grading, he provides a lot of resources online to help you (including test prep), and best of all, his tests actually cover the material from class.
Steve is a great teacher and he is always ready to help. His tests on the other hand are very tough and graded very strictly. This is a class you can pass if you are willing to put in the time, but don't expect to get an A.
The best math instructor I have ever had. He provides plenty of examples in class and gives you plenty of practice so you can master the material. His office hours are super helpful, and he usually tests on examples that he's done in class. I would recommend him to anyone looking to take calculus.
Gives very clear lectures. He does his best to ensure that his students understand the material. I would take another class from him.
His lectures were clear and to the point online. The weekly quizzes were pretty much what was on the videos. Online with him is the easiest, you can fast-forward or pause his videos! He's always open to questions and praises you for good work! Best math teacher i've had!
Steve is definitely one of the best math teachers at lane. I was worried about taking calculus because I had heard it was quite the step up from Trig, but he made it seem so non-intimidating with his lectures as they were very clear. He is also very organized and wants to help students out. Personally I think he's a fair grader.
I'm confident I now have a good basic understanding of Differential Calculus because I took this class from Stephen Selph.
Steve is amazing at lecturing, he is very clear with what we need to learn and he is also very clear about assignments (what is due and when). Makes sure everybody is clear on the material before moving on. His tests can be pretty difficult, at least for me but he is an amazing teacher.
Excellent teacher and very clear lectures, but BEWARE of grading scale. He gives a lot of homework and quizzes that are only 15% of the over all grade. The tests (including the final) are worth 85%!!! If you are like me and have test anxiety but are a very dedicated student you might not get the grade that you expect to because of this.
Stephen responds to emails very quickly and is very clear on the material. The lectures can be boring but such is the nature of math. He takes his job seriously and is extremely helpful / professional.
Steve is the best math teacher I've EVER had. He's always so calm and so patient and literally no question is a dumb question! He makes math fun! His teaching style is very clear, concise, and organized. I wish I could have him for every math class! He tests on what he teaches, nothing tricky. Clear study guides for tests and he's always there 4 u!
Hands down the best math professor I have ever had. He's someone who not only is good at math, but is talented at articulating how to do it so others understand. He's really approachable and helpful if you ask any questions. Tests are never tricky. Definitely would recommend
I had Steve for MTH 95 and 111. My only regret is that I couldn't take 112 with him as well. His lectures are very well organized, which makes it easy to take notes that you can decipher later. He's very helpful in class, frequently checks in to make sure people are following and is accommodating with office hours. Highly Recommended!!!!
A rare gem of a teacher. TAKE HIM! Has the gift of being an exceptional math mind, but the rarer gift of being able to explain it clearly and imprint his knowledge onto you. I feel privileged to have been his student. Very professional in every way. Everything a teacher should be, reliable, approachable, patient, organized. Go to office hours too!
I had Stephen Selph for 112 and just finished 251 with him. There were no surprises with assignments / grading, everything was laid out for you right from the start. He explains things clearly, has flexible office hours, and even sometimes puts up youtube videos explaining some tough to grasp topics. He's the best math teacher I've had at Lane.
Very clear presentation of material. His lectures are some of the easiest to understand of any math class I've taken. He likes to check in with the class throughout lecture to make sure everyone is following along, and clarifies if people are having trouble. Very helpful in office hours as well.
Stephen is kind and caring, and does frequent checks to make sure the class understands what he is currently teaching. I often sit outside his office and do my homework during his office hours, and he is very helpful and patient. He is a teacher that can teach for any type of learner. I wish he was teaching my next class.
Awesome teacher. He makes learning math feel very easy. He'll work through problems with the class and has a great teaching style. He is very organized and clear about upcoming homework and tests. There is a decent amount of homework but you have an entire week to do it so it's easy. I would highly recommend taking his class!!!
Great organization and pacing. The lectures were predictable and covered everything that would be later seen in the tests. I rarely had to reference the book for anything because it was thoroughly covered in class. Homework wasn't too heavy. He also makes available his videos to accompany the lectures. I highly recommend Mr. Selph.
I cannot stress enough how amazing this instructor is. He is extremely passionate about what he does and is amaze at it. His lectures are amazing, straight forward, and very helpful. He makes sure the class understands what is happening before moving forward. Always willing to help and just makes math stress free and fun. A true gem!
Steve's class is methodical and thorough, and he's the best math teacher I've ever had. His lesson plans are step-by-step and build on one another over the course of the term. He gladly answers questions during class and office hours. Tests are difficult, but if you do the required homework, you'll have no problem with them. Highly recommended!
I have never been good at math and I was able to get an A in an online math class! It wasn't easy and I had to spend a lot of time studying, but if it wasn't for his lecture videos and the way he teaches I never would've been that successful. He is also great at answering questions and always responds to emails quickly. He wants you to succeed.
After the first day of class I knew exactly what hw I would need to do and when to turn it in for the entire term. He gives good feedback on tests and hw after 2 or 3 days. His lecture are well structured and he is able to explain things in multiple different ways so everyone can understand. attendance only matters on the weekly workshops.
The most thorough lectures I've ever seen. He manages to cover every type of homework problem/test problem you're going to see. Always go to class and I recommend re-tracing through his lectures (from your notes) before you start homework assignments.
Steve is the best, kindest math teacher ever. He takes time to help with homework, tells you exactly what to prepare for on tests, gives partial credit, and his lectures are detailed, clear, and easy-to-follow. He clearly loves what he does and is happy to share his gift of teaching math with his students.
Selph was by far my favorite professor of my two years at Lane. His teaching style is clear, straightforward, and never rushed. Although calculus is a challenging subject at times, he made the concepts easy to understand. You could tell that he truly enjoyed and got excited about teaching, and I adored his gentle and kind personality.
I'm not a math person, but Steve was seriously the best instructor I could have gotten for this class. He was willing to work with me, and seemed like he genuinely cared about my success. This course was not easy, and I highly recommend putting in all the time you can on the assignments/lecture videos/studying/etc.
Stephen Is my all time favorite math teacher. He teaches at a great pace and explains concepts in an organized simple way. However, I did not like the online math 111 class. If you are very good at math then go for it. If you are not good with math then never take and online one.
Steve is my all-time favorite instructor. I went on to Uni after this and he's twice as good as any other teacher I've had. I wish so much that he would teach my Uni classes. He assigns a good amount of homework, but not too much. Just enough to make you learn. His lectures make sense. He truly cares about teaching.
He is an excellent instructor! I've taken a couple classes with him and he is truly dedicated to teaching the subject. You will never encounter a type of problem you haven't already solved and he really gives you the tools to build a solid math foundation.
Mr Selph was a great teacher high up on my list of favourite teachers I've had. His lectures were clear, he approached problems in various ways so all types of learners could understand. He was very patient with his students and created ways for them to solve and discover math solutions on their own, then walked them through it.
Professor Selph is an excellent teacher. He can be a bit quiet at first, but he makes an effort to reach out and help students understand the material. His grading is very fair and gives students the best opportunity to succeed. He makes himself available outside of class, and is always helpful. I absolutely recommend him!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this teacher. I wish he taught Calculus as well!
Overall Dr. Selph was a good teacher, he taught the material well and always answered students questions. However, 75% of our final grade was based on tests, and there was no extra credit that really counted for much. So, overall, I would recommend him as teacher, but not if you're a weak test taker.
I have taken two of his classes now and I just signed up for a third, I think that says enough right there. He is a great math teacher who is extremely helpful and understanding. The workload is pretty decent but I put the difficulty as a 3 because there's videos to help with almost every question and he will respond promptly to emails.
I know nothing about the prof himself. But his class is good. The videos provided are my saviors. textbook provided. There is a project-type thing due every Monday. Strict-ish on guidelines. Updates grades regular. The tests are the worst part, just because they are timed, and you have to show 100% of your work, so thats hard. id take again tho.
Best math teacher I've ever had in my entire life. Math is a very hard subject for me, but getting an A was really easy because he's such an amazing professor.
If you enjoy self-learning then this is the class for you. For the online version of his class, all he did was give you links for youtube videos and said figure it out. He also doesn't give enough time on the exams but when you ask him for extra credit he doesn't offer it. Go with caution when taking this class, many breakdowns happened.
I've taken both MTH111 and 112 with Professor Selph and it's been AMAZING. I've never had a math teacher who explained things so clearly. He doesn't just give you a formula, he shows you how to get the formula, and it makes it so much easier to understand. Great class, great teacher, no textbook purchase required. 10/10 would take again.
At least for me it seemed like the homework was a lot harder than what was actually on the test this is the first time that this has ever happened.Overall professor Selph was one of the best math teachers I've ever had he would explain everything very thoroughly so everyone could understand. He also graded assignments faster than any other teacher.
The best math teacher at Lane. I took his class twice (MATH 252 and MATH 256), and got an A in both. He gives great lectures, and he teaches in a way that makes difficult topics understandable within the span of a lesson. His homework is a little difficult, but super helpful because it does prepare you for his exams.
This was the worst trimesters for me. My boss scheduling me full time when I asked to be part time, and getting sick. Math was the only class I was able to maintain an A. Professor Selph is the best. Providing videos in Moodle to rewatch/study what I missed. Step by step answers to math problems handed out, and replied very fast to my emails.
Professor Selph is one of, if not the best professor I have ever had! Lectures are incredible and he presents them in a manner that is easy to understand. He provides great feedback and is always willing to help you during office hours or other arranged times. I would 100% recommend anyone to take a Math class with Professor Selph.
Mr. Selph was great. He may seem like he is low energy as he is soft-spoken and teaches in a much less dictatorship way, but he is great and will answer any question you have, whether small or large. He does assign a lot of homework, but it is a Calc 2 class after all. However, the homework is enough to leave you less studying which is nice.
He is very good at giving students a chance to make up work and is always accessible via email. He has office hours as well. He has interactive lectures and you can tell that he wants each student to succeed and learn.
Very good teaching style. Would start out each class answering questions about homework, then move on to this weeks lesson. Class would alternate between lectures, and in class exercises, and review. The way he broke things up made things interesting and engaging. He also used a free online textbook, which was nice. Highly Recommend!
Class was highly organized, teaching style really allowed for me to learn. His teaching style included lecturing about and defining a specific topic, then showing an example of said topic, then allowing us to do a try. Very beneficial for me. The online textbook is free. My one bit of advice would be to study a good amount before each test.
Great Professor. Cares about ensuring your confidence in the materials he teaches. Very straight foward guy, easy to approach, easy to communicate with. Very Understanding.
Really wish this class was set up differently. Took this prof after seeing how many positive reviews he had on this site, however I did not have a positive experience. Every teacher I have had utilizes an online system to do HW, however Steve was very old school and assigned HW only from the text book. I much prefer the online HW systems.
Great professor and wants you to succeed. Homework comes from online textbook which he provides for free. Weekly homework has between 12-30 problems due depending on topics covered during the week. You never go into homework feeling unprepared if you were engaged during lecture. Tests aren't terribly difficult and he provides test reviews.
He is one of the best instructors I have had in collage. He is interested in to your success as much as you are.
Fantastic teacher. He's very kind, soft-spoken, but you can always hear him - no one speaks over him in class, because all the students respect him. The homework is on paper and turned in in paper, from the textbook, which I found nice. The reviews on his page here speak for themself - I've never seen a better rate my professor score.
He is excellent. Attendance is not mandatory, and videos are provided within Moodle of all concepts. In person, very engaging teaching style, and he's got a good sense of humor. I only found the Homework difficult leading up to the tests, and the practice sheets contain the hardest problems, so exams aren't trouble unless you haven't studied. Good!
Professor Selph has a structured teaching style that really helps with learning. The free online textbook and in-class exercises are great, but don't slack off - study hard before tests. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for my prep!
Kindhearted/cares about the well being of his students. He makes sure to be available in person or via email to answer questions and encourages class participation. I've taken 111 before so I was familiar with what was taught, but if you were new to lessons he makes it engaging/easy to follow. Workload is minimal, study guides relate to test well!
Don't expect to earn extra credit, it's also really hard to retake any assignments in his class. You will learn multiple subjects each class so I highly suggest you attend each and every class or you will be clueless. Three tests which are worth 45% of your overall grade, and the final is worth 25%.
Stephen Selph was one of my favorite teachers that I have ever had. He was able to explain concepts very well and would be able to answer almost any questions that came his way. He seemed like he cared about his students and wanted to help them where he could. I would recommend him to anybody.
Stephen is the best professor I've ever had! He has a super calm, unobtrusive presence and though his voice is soft, everyone listens when he speaks. He assigned readings that made sense and formatted his class so that we had a lecture first, then group work on the lecture topic with him coming around to help, then more lecture. It just made sense.
Took for Diff-eq. Great professor, very structured course. It's clear he does a lot of planning before class. Made this complicated subject make sense. Highly recommend.
