Takes himself too seriously
Interesting course study, interesting guy.
one of the best people i've ever met. encourages students to think about things in new light and from different angles. a joy to be in his class!
Awesome teacher who's classes are fun, laid back and well worth your while. I recommend him to anyone as a nice break in a hard core schedule.
This guy is awesome, he is flexible, works with you if needed, his lectures keep you interested. He brings up great points that make you think, his tests are challenging but easy if you study. He is my favorite teacher at the I.
Excellent Teacher! One of my all time favorites. He really cares about his students and wants to help them. I've learned a ton in his classes.
Best professor I have ever had, changed my ways of thinking, and therefore changed my life. Every student at BYU-Idaho should be required to take a class from him.
Awesome!
HILARIOUS! Definitely can make you laugh even if you're having the worst day ever. He's super easy. Made me think in a different way, taught interesting concepts.
Very interesting guy. Makes class fun. HAs a lot of good ideas
Awesome class with a great teacher. Really opens the world up for all to view in its raw form. Enjoyed the projects, and assignments which is rather unusual.
AMAZING teacher-made me choose sociology as a major. Changed my life-take every class from him that you can. The course work is never overbearing and the tests are fair and easy to study for. Incredible guy and teacher.
Needless to say, he has an interesting reputation around campus--he's an awesome teacher. He's very funny and good at what he does. More often than not, he'll get you out of your comfort zone and brighten your day. The class is easy enough but just make
He was a excellent teacher and had very intersting views on the system of order. good person and teacher
He is hilarious and an awesome teacher!!
He is hilarious and an awesome teacher!!
Stephen is the COOLEST guy EVER!!!!!!!
Stephen is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I learned so much from his class. Stephen is an awsome person
Stephen is hilaroius! I have so much fun in his class. I totally recomend him and his social problems class.
I love his teaching style, he makes you think for yourself and develop your own ideas about the subject. He stretches you and expects you to become more than who you are already. Yeah he's funny but he's an amazing teacher. I love his classes! Because of him and his class I want to go to Grad School. He's inspiring and so are his classes...
He is so COOOOOL!!!
Awesome teacher. He makes class fun and teaches in such a way that you don't even realized your learning.
It's been a year since I took Stephen's class and I still think about how much I learned and how fun it was. He totally takes teaching to the next level and still has high expectations. His humor adds to the environment and allows for a good learning opportunity.
He brought out new ideas in me and I found myself thinking about what we talked about in class days later. He is one of those teachers who change you and you never forget. If you do all the reading tests are easy. Otherwise you are lost.
Very tough. Extemely self-centered and big ego. Has a temper and an attitude
I learned quite a bit. He's willing to talk to students after class and help them out with career ideas. It's a funny class that will keep you entertained. All of his tests are essay--I would say that the questions are all very fair.
SO he THINKS he's really funny. And he can be sometimes... but i think he gets away with a lot of crap and inappropriate stuff. I think he grades on how well he knows you and not on your quality of work. Doesn't care about your grade. I'd take him if I had to... but I wouldn't choose him.
Awsome guy. Knows his stuff. Interesting ideas, hillarious to listen to/ watch teach. Does have a huge ego.
Stephen is the best teacher that I've had. I've never learned as much as I did in his class. I looked forward to going to class. Mostly discussion and NO busy work. I highly recommend that you take him. So much fun!
Challenges students to think outside the box. May be offensive to students who are closed minded and set in their ways. Great teacher! One of the best in the Soc department! Grades fairly and wants to help his students!
MONEY TEACHER.....best teacher on campus....slash best teacher ever....and all those people out there that can't take a joke or have no sense of humor are lame and need to drop his class. Peace ..Stephen Rocks
Stephen is so cool! He wants to you call him Stephen, not Brother Smith. He is so funny and tells stuff like it is. I found myself thinking about his class and the topics we covered all the time. He really changed my outlook on issues and helped me create my own opinion. This was one of my very favorite classes!!! HILARIOUS!
Stephen is awesome! His class really makes you think outside the box. He is so funny and relates every lecture to the gospel. CHOOSE STEPHEN!
Stephen is abosolutely hilarious!!! He puts some humor in every lesson...which keeps me awake!
He is indeed a funny teacher. He allows students to develop their own opinions, and he truly loves what he does.He makes you feel comfortable in his class. If you are ever offended, just talk to him in person, because you will find there's never an intent to offend behind his remarks and actions. He really is a great guy!!
awesomely
Hahahaah... I'm still laughing he is such a funny teacher! He has a different perspective than alot of mormons, but after u think about it for a while u generally conclude he is correct. Be sure to do the reading & u will be fine on the tests & do the in class essays (really in class sentances) because they are worth 5 points & can make or break u.
HILARIOUS!!! great sense of humor and approaches things from a real perspective, which is needed for a social problems class. He doesn't worry about doing everything "proper", so if that will bother you rethink taking him. I personally LOVED him and the course, and if you do your reading and listen in class (attend), it's an easy A.
Stephen is so hilarious. He is knowledgeable and willing to help anyone who needs it.
THE BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD!!! his class is only mandatory because he has short essays at the end of class and you get points for it. he is HILARIOUS!! highly recommend his class
he's rad.... made me switch my major so soc because of his social problems class. he's got an awesome way of teaching - very EYE OPENING, perfect for many of the closed-minded people at school. makes things interesting and makes you THINK.
best teacher in the department! classes will keep you enthralled the entire time, he does things his own way but it still open to new ideas from students. very willing to work with any student with anything they need/want to know more about. he is very encouraging about succeeding in college and beyond- this is VERY rare on campus.
Stephen is the best!! All of his classes are cake except theory which with that one all you need to do is extra work and you get an A! best teacher, so inspiring!
Esteban is rad. He's tough, but if you like sociology then he is your man. I would advise doing the extra acceptable work in order to get an A. I developed a theory on education and he really liked it. Expand your mind by doing the extra stuff. I didn't buy the book and did pretty well.
Stephen is so so so cool! I loved all of his classes! His classes can be hard but as long as you do your work, you will get a good grade! He's funny too.
Challenging professor. If you want to float your way through he'll sink you. Rarely will a teacher ask students to ask questions as he does.
Perhaps the greatest teacher ever! I loved this class and he really made me think. Stephen asks challenging questions, but the discussions are so interesting. The work wasn't especially hard and he always gave us plenty of time and help with it. I definitely would take another class from Stephen!!
Stephen is not afraid to speak his mind and will tell you stories and bring up topics that no one else will. It really makes you think, and even if you don't agree with him, his points make sense. He is an awesome teacher. If I were a sociology major, I would be taking more classes from him.
best teacher that i have ever had in my entire life. it is refreshing to hear a little broader view of the world and life. it helped me to expand my mind and my opinions. i love this class! it is my earliest class. normally i wouldn't want to get up that early but in this case, i looked forward to it every day. i love it!
He is the best teacher he makes you want to go to class to see what happens next he is not a stuff shirt like most the professor at BYU-I he is awesome, you learn so much that is useful!
He is Awsome! And hillarious! you will Love this guy. Stephen is what he likes to be called, not bro. Smith
Great teacher. His classes make my day, however the test kind of suck. But not that bad!
Stephen is RAD! He and Bro Tatem are my favorites and the best! Be sure to take classes from both! They are carbon copies of each other in so many ways, although Stephen psuhes grad school more than Bro Tate does. Want to learn? Both are rad guys!
Stephen is amazing! I had him for SOC 112 and 293 last semester and I am now in his SOC 230 class. He opens your mind to new perspectives and teaches you how to really want to learn. I love going to class so I can gain new insights. He is really chill and makes you work, but you get to choose what you want to do. I would recommend taking SOC 112!
Stephen was so funny! It was refreshing to go to a class and laugh while you learn. However, the tests throw you for a loop. But Stephen is an awesome guy!
Okay a professor that doesn't require a textbook is golden. Saves money and its easier just to go online and read. He has great insights and makes you think about the not so happy things in life that are just as important. Great teacher, loved him!
GREAT TEACHER!!! Really open about what is really going on in the world. Very funny and interesting!
A very good teacher with a very liberal slant on things. You will do well as long as you don't disagree with him or have a conservative view. He can be short tempered and be arrogant. Still a good class and teacher to take.
Stephen - he B da man! Over da top & de bery bestest! One cool dude. Viva Marx!
A fun class, but didn't learn much. Stephen thinks he is pretty cool and is unless you disagree with him. Very liberal for a church school. A good class to boost your GPA.
An excellent class. Knows his stuff. A must take for soc majors.
Mt favorite teacher. Stephen rocks!
glorious
loved him! He is hilarious and teaches you real world things... It was my favorite class!
A cool guy, usaully. A fun class, usually. An easy class, mostly. But Stephen as a mean streak in him if you don't agree with him and he can give a tantrum like a little kid. His know it all attitude can get annoying, but he is still pretty good.
best class ever. I took a class from him two years ago and I still think about the lectures. Stephen was hilarious and well worth a long walk in the snow to hear his lectures!
Fairly easy class and fair grades. Smith is easy going unless things don't go his way and then he can get moody and difficult, kind of like a kid who doesn't get his way. Just shut up and be agreeable and you will do ok.
By far my favorite class! Anyone would be crazy not to take his class. I took Social Problems, and loved it. People may think he is outspoken, or whatever, but I think he is a great teacher, he addresses real problems, the class is not hard. Just write a one page paper every so often, and take the tests, and listen in class, SO ENTERTAINING!
THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! Stephen is very outspoken, so this class is not for the tender-hearted. But he will make you see the work in a new light, and will entertain the entire time! He understands how students feel, and can relate better than any other professor I've ever had. You MUST go to class for the lectures, but no busy work! yay!
THE BEST CLASS AND TEACHER EVER! I always look forward to his class. He's so funny and always makes the class laugh. Very knowledgeable about subject. The class is discussion, but we do a lot of other things too--like watch movie clips and stuff.
Go to class, listen, skim through the online material and its an easy A. He is hilarious and keeps class interesting. Don't know if I learned a lot, but it made me think more and improve opinions on certain subjects.
very cool dude. great teacher with great insight into sociology.
I liked him for the soc 230, I did all the work like I was suppose to, and I learned a lot! It made me like coming to his class.
Stephen is HILARIOUS!!!!!!! I only missed class once and that was the worst day EVER! I looked forward to his class all the time. He made the boring subject so fun and so easy. He understands that its a foundations class and it requires certain things but he loves what he teaches and makes it so fun to learn! Tests are exactly the study guides.
Stephen is one of the funniest people in the world. But besides that, he's a really good professor. He tries to make the class as enjoyable as possible and he goes easy on you when it comes to exams. He says whatever is on his mind and if that bothers you, either get over it or don't take his class. You'd be missing out if you didn't though!
Stephen tries to make everyone laugh, even if he has to say inappropriate and crude things to do so. He is a little immature in that he thinks he is "awesome" when he swears. A learned and intelligent person does not ever swear. He is a good man, but I didn't enjoy his class much. Several people absolutely love it though.
I too am conflicted with this class, but not because he threw out a couple curse words like the baby below me. The problem wasn't so much his teaching, which was great, but the fact that he let everyone comment and go on and on about stupid personal stories. When it came time for the final, I barely got a B because my notes were so useless.
Take. Stephen. Now. Don't think, just do it. He's AMAZING!! I learned so much- he's not afraid to broaden his classes perspective and shake up their world a bit. My testimony grew, and he pretty much had us rolling on the floor laughing every day. Very intelligent and helpful. I sure will miss his class.
Very out of the box teacher. Discussions have a purpose, they are fun but for anthropology we really explored the topic.
Stephen's classes are great. They aren't easy and the point of them is to push you so that you will get that learning is more important than a grade. If you have any common sense whatsoever you will do great in his classes.
Best teacher at BYUI. Undoubtedly.
The more mature you are the more you will enjoy and even appreciate this class. Especially Stephen. He is a definite must-take teacher.
he is sooo funny. and smart. the perfect mix of funny and smart.
This site is about the professor, not the class. And this professor is worth taking.
had to get on here just to give stephen two thumbs up for the class we had.
run for mayor stephen!
Love class, join up!
bro smith is famous on campus: because HE IS GOOD AT TEACHING. makes you laugh. makes you
Theory is interesting. Stephen is more interesting. !
sheesh a little more work for a 2 credit class than i thought it'd be. take stephen though!!
Very motivating lectures/discussions. He is a very impressive educator.
For real he works the class is enough fro anyone to join
yes makes you laugh and the class is worth it in the end.
Fairly difficult. COMPARATIVELY. Hey, it's college. Precious knowledge at the end though
he is soooo RAD!
He will make you notice things that you never did before; it is very worth taking
A lot of classes at this place are crappy but Stephen allows for some real thinking to take place. University: easy sludge, Stephen: rockin education
Good Teacher. Encourages independent thought. Cool teaching style.
Ya steven!
Haha hot. The whole semester was worth it
Brother Smith is really Stephen. Stephen is great.
Can be funny & entertaining, but is very scary and narrowminded unles you agree with him
He is by far the funnest teacher I have ever had. He knows a lot about what he is teaching. His tests are not bad if you just go to class and listen. This is the most favorite class I have taken in a long time.
so helpful and unerstanding
I solemnly swear Stephen raises the roof. Check it.
Stephen is by far my favorite teacher! Love this guy! Such a fun class. He's very enthusiastic and hilarious. I loved going to class!
Awesome teacher! this way by far my favourite class, and it was because of him. he makes class fun and interesting. you have to write a mini paper every class, but its only a paragraph and you usually get 100% on it as long as it makes sense. And you dont have a text book, he just gives you a website to use instead. definitely an amazing teacher!
This was my favorite class. Stephen makes it extremely interesting and he is hilarious. i cant wait to take more classes from him. It is pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class. and hes hot!
#1 teacher on campus. very rad and worth it.
An easy A. Students do a lot of th teaching by doing simple little papers. Smith thinks he's hot and his ego is huge. Is very liberal to the point of gaging his students. Not one I will choose again.
Best teacher on campus. LOVE HIM.
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! He is hillarious and actually helps me learn. HIGHLY recommend him. Go to class and do your homework. Favorite class.
Best. Teacher. EVER! Seriously, you are absolutely insane if you pick another teacher over him! He's crystal clear in his teaching, is absolutely hilarious, and you learn so so much from this class!
Amazing teacher!!! It was a refreshing class and I actually learned things I could use in life. Very fun and never boring. I wish he taught more classes. I would have to say he's been my favorite professor here at BYU-Idaho
I love this teacher! He makes class SO FUN! He is really funny and knows what he is talking about. And he's super attractive because of his awesome personality. TAKE HIS CLASS!
honestly just freaking FANTASTIC! He really got me interested in studying human behavior he may swear sometimes but its in all good terms.
He is my favorite teacher so far. You do need to go to class but it's not hard because you want to go to his class each day. I feel like he doesnt really believe in tests because to me they are a joke. They are so easy and you only have four of them. The tests are worth as much as a daily essay so as long as you go to class you will pass that class
AWESOME TEACHER! Stephen's class and teaching style rock! If you want to attend a class where the truth is told and the professor isn't afraid to pop that naive little mormon bubble that so many students here have, then you should take this class. I have never not wanted to go to class ever with Stephen.
Freakin' hilarious. Never a dull moment, the class is always laughing. Not gonna say I agree with everything he teaches but he is FUNNY. Easy A for sure.
Take this class! It will seriously change the way you think- incredible learning experience no matter what your major is. Best class and best teacher I've had so far. It's easy to pass and there's no textbook. 4 exams throughout the semester.
Best class. steven teaches with a lot of great interaction and stories. the grade is based on 4 easy tests. and these "essays" they are like a paragraph long. this class makes you look at the world in a new way. if i were a soc major id take all his classes!
He is one of the best professors I've ever had. As long as you have some imagination you will do well in his class. He is entertaining and he teaches you to think for your self and have others think for you. He teaches you things that are useful to life and if you don't scare easily help you with your goals.
One of the best professors I have ever had. The class is really interesting, and there is not that much homework. There is no busy work.
Favorite teacher at this school hands down. Stephen is the man. I learned a TON and had a good time. The guy is down to earth and funny, yet still knows what he is talking about and does a good job teaching the material. The HW does require some effort, but if you dont get it in on time, hell sometimes hell accept it late for full credit.
I understood everything so clearly! And I a great time doing so! He is hilarious and his tests are equally hilarious! Just do the readings he assigns and you will be golden! I have a 98%! :)
I've taken three classes from Stephen now. He is hilarious and has a lot of really great ideas. I'm sorry, but if you get anything but an "A" in his classes then you probably shouldn't be in college. Super easy, fun to attend.
This class was so much fun! I really enjoyed it. Learned lots and had a fun time. Hilarious teacher and totally worth waking up early for this class! Best class ever!
Professor of interesting stuff!
Seriously the best teacher I've ever had. I looked forward to his class every day I had it. He is sincerely interested in what he is teaching and keeps the class interesting. He is very informal and has his students call him Stephen and the class is based on discussion and interaction. The attendance is an "essay" at the end of class, it's simple.
Stephen is fantastic. Keeps class fun and interesting. Has very high expectations and you have to do extra work to get an A. I always come out of class learning something new from him. Clear and very good at what he does. Not your traditional college professor.
Awesome teacher, definitely one of my favorites on campus. Makes you think in ways you never dreamed you would. Makes you work for your grade but no busy crap, it's all applied and you learn a lot through it. Loved every class period!!
Stephen is great at keeping the class interesting, educational, and funny! He has a lot of great insight and is a very smart guy. I never miss class because I enjoy it every day!
Stephen is so cool, take a class from him!! He is unlike any professor I've had at BYUI cause he jokes around and is sometimes off color but he's a great teacher. He treats us like college students. This class might scare you at first but stick with it, it's not too bad and it's really interesting. I learned to love learning through this class!
By far one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. Definitely the best teacher I have had at BYU-I. He is hilarious, helpful, and not too hard. He is very clear with the students as to what is on the tests, and his classes are very enjoyable. You actually retain the information you learn, and each class period is a discussion with lots of stories
Great informitive class, from the best possible teacher. Each class he covers the necessary info, but he does it in a way that is interesting, funny, and yet educational. I highly recommend taking his classes. Even if your not a sociology major, its still worth while to take this class.
He has you call him by his first name to make things more personal. He is super funny and has excellent discussions during his class. It really makes you think about what is going on in the world. His tests are pretty easy and there is usually a sizable curve he adds to them. You have to write a paragraph at the end of every class so go to class!
I loved Stephen! He is the funnest teacher I've had so far and I enjoyed going to class. I would recommend him. He is willing to help anyone out if they need it.
Coolest teacher in the world, you learn a ton and he makes the classes very interesting. For one quiz he had us go out and "forage" food from the building ha people brought back chips and apple cores from the trash and he took it! We all did well on that quiz haha. He broadens your mind and makes you think in a better way, I loved going to class :)
Class was a waste of time. Lots of fun and games and nonsense jr high assignments. A very twisted and insulting approach to learning.
Learned decent amount in class. Try's to intimidate but he is all bark and no bite. Just pretend to agree with him and you will get an A, I did:) He has one day when he kicks out the whole class and says we will fail you.Later says it was a rouse and hoped we learned our lesson, but we never figured out what he meant.
He is the best teacher. He clearly states the information you need to do to receive each grade. Teaches like a COLLEGE teacher should teach (holding students responsible). Very excited to teach and helps you want to learn. Every class is AMAZING!!!
Stephen Is amazing!! Funniest professor I've had yet! TAKE HIM!! He is clear in what he expects. I loved going to class! Definitely would take another class from him!!
i love stephen he is amazing and is with out a doubt the best professor in the world.
Bro. Smith doesn't really have control of the class. His syllabus a is not clear at all. He does not keep up with grades and loses a lot of things (which affect your grade). Ends up just "guestimating" on what you should have so throughout the semester you don't know what you have. He doesn't exemplify the criteria for a college professor at all
Losses control of class most of the time because he is too casual. Talks too much about his personal life and how he was wild when he was younger. Take his class if you don't want to take things seriously because he doesn't.
Any class taught by this man is amazing! He is my favorite professor I've ever had. EVER. He's there with you every step of the way, no matter if the subject matter is difficult, he makes you really think, everything is enjoyable, funny, and insightful. Great teacher. Great class.
I suggest u av oid the class. Know exactly what you will be supporting when you pay for the book as it ruined the class for me. The author (in my opinion) is extremely offensive by the end of the term. I love the teacher as a person, but I regret spending one cent on the texbookclass. I thought a previous rater was just intolerant. Sadly, not.
He's a funny guy and this class will open your eyes to the world around you. I don't know how someone would be so sensitive as to find the reading offensive, but it is meant to make you think about the world with a different set of eyes. Easy class if you do the work and reading by the time you're supposed to.
Best of the best. Those who complain he is too casual just want something to complain about, because he teaches real life, in a real life way. uncomfortable for some, but they need it. His class operations are very unique, yet very clear and specific, leaving no excuse. I got a C, 100% my fault. Relates and cares in a very personal way. Friend him
He is the best teacher ever! I had to write 10 portfolio this semester, but I didn't have exams, which is great! Love his lecture and recommend you to take his class
He doesn't discuss material in class. He instead tries to be friendly and cool with the students. If you like a really laid-back professor and having to do everything on your own with class time being completely useless, this is your professor. The only reason to go to class is participation points for your grade. All learning is on your own.
if you want a class youll probably remember for ever with lessons youll remember forever, take the man. He is what teaching and being a student is all about. influential. let me call you dad.
Brother Smith is very funny and class periods can be very entertaining. The things taught in class don't really have anything to do with the homework. Each week you have an assessment before class. Then you have an essay at the end of each class (super short, automatic A if you are there). Tests are basically the assessments.
A course in ultra liberal philosophies that make you wonder at times why he is at a church school, but he does make you think. He is a funny guy and he thinks so too. He thinks very highly if himself and isn't someone you want to cross as he can get angry. I wouldn't take him again.
Speaking from the perspective of someone who has failed Sociology twice and doesn't quite enjoy it, I would definitely recommend this teacher. He has been the best by far! His lectures are hilarious and he explains everything so well. No tests, just some quizzes, he is a good grader, and you need to go to class, but its worth it. No reason to skip
Great class!! You have one assignment per week, and have to read a chapter or two in the book a week. He is super funny, tells lots of stories that help you to learn and are funny! I would definitely suggest you take him for any of your SOC classes!
I love Brother Smith because his lectures are not boring. He is hilarious and very understanding. I took his class for fun, and I got just that and more. You will learn so much if you allow yourself to make time and do the reading assignments.
Stephen is AWESOME. It's nice to have someone a little more liberal-minded (although I wouldn't actually call him LIBERAL) at our ultra-conservative school. His lectures really hit home. I'll definitely take his level 200 class. The only downside is that he's not very personable, doesn't invest in students. I don't think he even knows my name.
He is an awesome teacher that makes the lectures exciting and interesting for his student. The weekly assignments are pretty simple and the tests just contain questions from homework. Be warned though. The assignments he give in class do add up and can hurt your grade if you skip too often. And due to how easy class is, he gives no extra credit.
"Stephen Smith here." Whatever you do at BYUI, take Stephen's classes. Any or all of them! He is hilarious and a breath of real world air. He tells it how it is and tells stories a lot, but he is a such a great break to have. I learned a lot in the class. His TA kinda sucked and graded like a mo fo but Stephen was super understanding. Peace out.
Stephen is great. He made a worthless class interesting and I actually learned a lot about symbolism (which is actually pretty important in our religion). He encourages students to think outside the box and ask questions, rather than accept things blindly (another important tenet of our religion). He also has pretty decent taste in music.
BEST TEACHER EVER! I loved him and learn a lot in class. You have to work for your grade but he has clear expectations. In 230, he will tell you the first day what you have to do get the A. It's your job to earn it! Take him you will not regret it.
Bro. Smith is one of the best sociology teachers ever! He is super funny and lectures are always very interesting. You will love his class. If you get offended easily though don't take his class. Grading is easy and assignments are easy.
Incredibly lax grader, tries a bit too hard to try to seem cool though. I took this class as an elective and regretted it not because it was hard but because you have to do some weird things (there are now people in Rexburg that think I am homeless) but if this is for your major it's really not that bad.
Brother Smith was super funny. I always looked forward to his lectures. There were no tests for intro to Sociology, just little quizzes. Wonderful class to take if you are just interested in the subject!
CHOOSE HIM!! He is very kind and HILARIOUS! Lectures are NEVER boring! I learned a TON from Stephen. Attendance matters, tests are based off his lectures but they are so interesting and hilarious it's easy to pay attention. You have to write a short/EASY essay once a week. Do the reading and pay attention in class easy A. Tests were not hard!
There were two papers due every week. They were short and very easy to do so don't let that stop you from taking this instructor! He was an awesome teacher and I am looking to see if I can take another class from him. He has an awesome sense of humor, his weekly lectures are great and you can watch them at your leisure. He is engaging and fun!
Stephen is super chill. In his classes he really wants you to learn and take your education into your own hands. I have taken a few classes with him and I have loved his lectures. If you take an online class with him it's not as good as he is in person. He has a great sense of humor. A little on the wild side.
Stephen was the best. His lectures were so interesting, he is hilarious, and the class is pretty simple. You have chapter readings before class; read them and take decent notes because they help a ton on the weekly papers. The papers are only one page. Go to the lectures, you won't regret it. I would easily take another class of his.
Stephen was amazing! This class meets with a T.A. on tuesdays to go over the reading and take a short reading quiz and then combines to meet with Stephen on thursdays for lectures. The lectures are hilarious and you dont want to miss them! While they dont take attendance, there is a short quiz every class for participation points.
Stephen is an exceptional Professor, and one that I would highly recommend to anybody who is willing to hold themselves to high academic standards and come to class prepared to learn. He is inspiring, kind, helpful, funny, and he perfectly embodies the purpose and mission of BYU-Idaho. I highly, highly recommend him to anyone who is considering. :)
Stephan is awesome! He is willing to work with the students. Class is very enjoyable. He makes learning fun due to his hilarious stories. You read a chapter or two a week with a short quiz once a week with a TA. There is one major paper due at the end of the semester, but its super easy. overall, incredible class.
This class was fantastic and so was Stephen. I'd highly recommend both the class and the teacher to anybody who wants to learn more about the way the world works and be inspired to make a difference. Stephen is funny, helpful, inspiring, and is the embodiment of a professor at BYU-I. Social Strat was a great class, do the work and you will pass.
This is an easy class but attending class is mandatory. Even if you have a real circumstance, don't expect Stephen to work with you. He has seen it all and does not show compassion to students.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but it also made me feel like I'd actually learned something for once. Stephen won't go easy on you, but if you can pass, you'll feel like you really accomplished something. He gives great feedback and is very helpful, even on the simplest assignments.
AMAZING! please take this class! I'm a public health major so this class was required but I would absolutely take this class for fun! Steven is so incredible, their are no tests just a simple 1 page/ single spaced paper every week & a mini quiz on the reading (which I never read lol that's how chill they were) PLEASE TAKE THIS CLASS YOU'LL LOVE IT!
Most amazing teacher I have ever had. Super funny and knowledgeable. Best experience here at this school. Take him, you will not regret it.
Brother Smith is a very good professor, he makes his lectures interesting to watch and gives good example to make the concepts easy to understand and apply. The work load is pretty heavy you have to write 2-3 papers a week and that can get a little tedious but over all I liked and learned a lot from this class.
Stephen is great! His lectures are entertaining and he has fun when he teaches. Yet that does not lower the quality of the material. Attendance (at the end of each class you write a paragraph), a weekly quiz of 5 questions, and a weekly one page submission is all that is accounted for your grade. No testing center.
I had the Soc 230 class and even though you start the semester needing to read a couple books (The Sociological Imagination and The Road to Character) he made it SUPER enjoyable and really interesting. He is really funny and down to earth. I recommend him 100%. (PLUS he doesn't give exams or use the testing center)
This class was so much fun! At first I was a little worried about taking Sociology, but after the first day, I was so excited. Stephen gives amazing lectures and keeps you involved. His lectures are engaging and hilarious! He tells stories that contribute to the lesson and they make you laugh all throughout class. This was a favorite class of mine.
He tells you upfront what he grades on, and you can always run your work by him before the deadline to get some really good feedback.
Stephen definitely makes you work for your grade, but it wasn't too hard at all! In order to get an A in the class he tells you in the very beginning exactly what to do. He is super understanding and is always willing to help with any assignments. He is also super funny and tells a lot of stories.
He is so lively and really makes class interesting. The material is somewhat dense but talking about it in class helps you to get the hang of it. Hands down the best prof I've had by far, I'd recommend to anyone.
This was my second class taken from Bro Smith and first online. Overall the class consists of 2 one page papers a week, group discussion boards and meetings, a small chapter quiz over each chapter, and a cultural analysis paper for the final. pretty easy and Bro Smith does a great job a helping you understand the material and the assignments.
By far the best class I have ever taken! Stephen is just hands down an amazing instructor. It's a tough class; lots of reading and extra work is MANDATORY to get an A, but if I can do it anyone can. Steven is hilarious and none of his classes were boring. I actually looked forward to his classes every week! It's challenging but worth it!
Brother Smith is super funny, goes in depth about each chapter, and is straightforward about what he expects. I took his class online and it was heavy on reading early in the week, but the assignments were fairly easy. The final is a LDS culture analysis paper and honestly very easy.
He is SUPER passionate about what he does and makes class very engaging. Makes an occasional off-color comment or joke which can disrupt the Spirit of the lesson, but he really does care about the subject and your success. Work hard and do your part (and don't put the final project off until the last minute!!) and you'll do just fine!!
Great teacher. He is not too picky as long as you are trying your best. Assignments were straight forward and the final paper was not as hard as it sounds. Create data graphs for it.
Great professor. I have had Stephen Smith both in person and online. In person he gives great lectures. You can tell he really knows his stuff and loves to throw in humor here and there.
Unpopular opinion, but Stephan is kind of overrated. When he feels like it, he's one of the best teachers on campus. Unfortunately, his great personality usually masks how lazy and incredibly arbitrary he can be. spent half the semester on big goose chases of projects with no grading relativity. Cancelled class more than we had it.
Brother Smith has been one of my favorite professors. He is so funny and his class is never boring. There is no extra credit, but if you do the work, you'll do well. There are also short quizzes at the beginning of every class. I would definitely take a class from him again.
Stephen is the bomb! I've had him for anthropology and sociology and he's been an amazing teacher for both. He inspires you to see the world differently and be a positive influence. He's very personable and willing to go the extra mile as a teacher and friend. Be prepared to laugh, learn, and become a better human!
This class is just really interesting in general and it was extra special having brother steven teach it! He is so funny and kept us all laughing! He is a great storyteller and really can relate to the content being discussed! I loved him! Make sure you follow all the directions on assignments though!
Bro. Smith's lectures were disappointing . Remote class this semester he has resorted to blocking private messaging on zoom. I said with mental illness I feel isolated in his class. He said that it is distracting. I just want to make friends. Hello, maybe it is distracting because of how you present the info? Check out Doctrine and Covenants 58:28
Brother Smith is HILARIOUS! I looked forward to his lectures every week. The topics that are covered in the class are super interesting and he elevates it to the next level with his stories. He is passionate about anthropology. He is super understanding and just all around a good person 10/10 would recommend!
I really like Stephen a lot. He is personable, and he is really nice. However, I do find his grading scale to be very extreme, and a little unfair. Along with that I also feel that his explanations for our assignments were not clear. I felt that I was playing a guessing game often and I didn't appreciate it.
By far the best professor I have ever had. You would be a fool not to take him, his bubbly lectures are full of anecdotes and ideas that help you to grasp the concepts and inspire you to genuinely care about the topic. Again, you would be a fool not to sign up for his class immediately, there is no better option out there.
This teacher was absolutely horrible. My experience with every class that this professor taught almost made me literally want to drop out of college. He is discouraging, he is a very rough grader, and he does not follow the school's policies or guidelines for grading. He gives vague instructions but expects specifics in homework assignments.
He is a great guy, one of the funniest profs I've ever met. The class seems easy until the end of the semester and you have a TON of papers. Easy grader though and the best guy. Makes you call him by his first names and says rubrics are of the devil, so sometimes you're a little on your own. You learn so much from his (hilarious) lectures!
Such a weird teacher. He is really nice and funny, but his grading style makes no sense at all. Getting an A is ridiculous in this class. It makes no sense at all. I have no idea how he is allowed to grade the way he does, but oh well.
He has a weird grading policy true but if you are willing to put the work in then he will work with you as much as you need. What he teaches is really important for later on in the major
Fascinating class! Slightly depressing sometimes but that's just because our world is a little depressing. Stephen is one of the best professors I've ever had (don't tell him that though)
Stephen is a great person but not a great teacher, or at least not a fair grader. It's almost impossible to get an A unless you dedicate an insane amount of time and effort to the course. I enjoyed his lectures as well as the reading material and I did learn a lot in both classes that I've taken from him. His ANTH101 class is much more relaxed btw!
This class was good but the prep work really kicked my butt. Just make sure you are getting the prep work done before the day starts or you will forget. Good lectures but they are pretty long.
Everythings open notes. It was an easy A for me because I worked ahead and was thorough. Weekly meetings with other classmates but its not a big chunk of your grade or time 10 minutes, 2 points tops. Good teacher just a little lazy. He uses old recordings instead of just making new updated lectures. He isn't very involved but is a good pick. Easy A
Stephen is an awesome professor. His grading is sort of weird with the check and minus thing... but he makes up for it in how enjoyable his classes are. One thing that makes Stephen great is that he lets you resubmit things until you get a good grade and will give you a lot of good and constructive feedback. 10/10. Oh and he has a PHD.
He's really funny! The lectures are always super fun to look forward to. However, he does have a different kind of humor, so some might get offended by what he says, so be careful. Felt like his assignments were more busy work than an actual assignment. Definitely recommend doing the readings before class. Also, he followed the rules by the book.
Took his online class and it was so boring. He just reuses his same lectures from back in the day, and almost all the assignments are busy work. He wasn't very interactive with the class either. I had high hopes for this class because it's a topic I'm very interested in but he made it a big let down. Didn't learn much more than I already knew.
You will have to go beyond what you would think to get a B or an A. But he is funny and very good at giving aid if you need it. However overall you get what you give, and what you prepare.
Very self centered and full of himself. He is a one-man cheer leader for himself. He thinks he is really funny and important with no feelings for anyone but himself. His classes are full of socialist dogma and it is surprising he is teaching at the Lords university. Pretty disgusting how he gets away with what he gets away with.
I have taken 3 or 4 classes from Stephen, and I am always impressed by the passion and knowledge that I gain from any of his classes. He does have an odd grading style but if you can get past that you will not be disappointed. He is the best teacher I have ever had... in my life.
I think he is a great person for sure. He is very sociable and fun, but his grading style is ridiculous. He does minuses, checks, and pluses. In order to get an A, you have to get 100% on your annotated bibliography your first try. Unreasonable and putting the author's middle initial can drop you an entire letter grade.
This professor loves to include everyone. Participation is a big part of this class but it is fun! Really cares for his students and responds to emails quickly. You write 2 essays a week but they are short and have no real test. There is a daily quiz but it is easy and not with much. TAKE HIM
Gosh, Stephen is GREAT. He makes class so entertaining and I feel like I really learned some good stuff in his class. I liked him so much I took another one of his classes this semester. Sometimes his grading can be weird, but just turn in your stuff and you are good!
Stephen was incredible! He was so funny and he really cares about his students. He is by far one of my favorite and most memorable teachers that I've ever had. If you do both of the extra projects then you'll get an A (SUPER easy AND you get to choose what you do!) the only reason I got a B was because I only did one of the projects. 10/10 teacher!
He's very funny and a decent professor. He definitely knows his sociology, but just has a different way of doing things. His grading system is one of a kind. Not a bad professor though, and lots of fun.
I do like Stephen as a person. He is fun, but his grading is horrible. He uses minuses, checks, and pluses rather than the ordinary grades. To get an A, you have to get 100% on your annotated bibliography your first try, which is unreasonable with 30 sources. I missed one initial after emailing it to him. He told me it was good, but I still got a B
This class was SO interesting, but there a stupid amount of papers you have to write and the 10 portfolio assignments you have to complete PLUS an additional final paper at the end of semester, none of which are explained or outlined anywhere within the class assignments besides the syllabus. I would've rather taken an actual test final.
ANTH101 was a weird course because there were two short papers due every week, and pretty much none of them had clear connections to the textbook (which is free online). It's pretty easy to wing it though. BUT Stephen is hilarious, and I genuinely looked forward to that class all week.
ANTH101 was a very interesting and fun class, but I wish Brother Smith would have done more in-depth assignments rather than writing assignments every week. I definitely would take his class again because he is genuinely hilarious and the class wasn't all that hard. As a person, Brother Smith is great and his teaching definitely reflects that.
I loved this class & I learned a ton! The class revolves around discussion so don't skip class. There are 5 unit papers and then 3 assignments due at the end of the semester- don't put them off if you want an A. Stephen is awesome, I will always recommend him! I didn't read a single reading lol (there's a LOT) and I got an A. Class was also so fun!
He is a great teacher with a hard class.
Professor Smith's ANTH101 class was an interesting and fun ride. While the weekly writing assignments felt a bit excessive, his hilarious lectures made it all worthwhile. I'd definitely take his class again - plus, Unstuckstudy was a great study tool to supplement the course materials.
Smith was one of the BEST professors I have had so far. I was actually pretty sad when his class ended, I really enjoyed his lectures and he taught so many interesting but great things. There is like 2 writing assignments each week, but they are not bad at all and pretty easy to do. He is a pretty funny guy and there were many laughs in his class.
I love Brother Smith. He is so easy to understand and gives amazing lectures. He responds very quickly to emails/messages and is extremely caring and understanding. He gives mini 5-question quizzes at the end of class. Attendance isn't mandatory per say, but if you want to get credit for those quizzes you need to show up.
Stephen is funny and explains concepts well in the context of the LDS Church. He's hard to describe - traditional, but has a very understanding view of the world. He's good at addressing hard subjects, but also has very strong opinions about less important things. Overall, he's a great teacher and you can learn a lot if you listen in class.
.......................
This professor has no time to read emails and will not give you the time of day. This class is a joke and you will be treated poorly.
Brother Smith isnt very helpful.
Brother Smith was great. He did recorded lectures which were helpful in preparing for quizzes. Weekly group discussions were graded and although our group was awesome, I didn't feel that the discussions contributed much to the content. The content of the course was fascinating and as long as you do the work, you'll get a good grade.
There is a paper due each week though it is short, and a quiz at the end of class. He has a portfolio (10 essays) at the end of the semester but you do 5 mid way through and are expected to space them out. There's also a final research paper but that is again done over the course of the second half of the semester and is pretty fun anyways.
I honestly enjoyed every lecture because he is such a funny guy and always makes everyone laugh with his stories and jokes. So many memorable moments. The assignments are pretty easy, just a short paper and response every week. Totally recommend if you want a good time and good stories to go along with the topics.
Stephen is an exceptional professor and exceptional person. You are lucky if you ever get to take a class from him, his perspective and attitude and classes as a whole will reshape your worldview for the better. I wish he taught more classes that I could take.
Brother Smith is a great professor with both humor and knowledge. The coursework is fairly easy if you stay on top of it and pay attention in class. If you slack of and miss important information during class, it will be incredibly hard to find in canvas.
11/10 professor. Loves Taco Bell and hates Santa (Satan Claus, you'll see). Pretty easy in class quizzes and essays at the end worth five points. Textbook was free and online. No exams, final paper.
