Mr. Smith was a great professor. He's very helpful and answers emails promptly. His lectures were very interesting and he is very knowledgeable in political science due to working overseas in the pentagon and he's also a pretty funny guy. His exams were not very hard, just study your notes and you're pretty much good to go.
Best professor I've ever had. Really cool guy that really knows his stuff. He seems to enjoy teaching and has some great stories.
Easy professor, just make sure to turn all work in on time.
Easy A, easy grader. Great professor. Learned a lot as well.
Have to be in class for the powerpoints, and detailed info. Sometimes conversations would last all period rather than going over notes. Awesome at lecturing!
Professor Smith is always willing to stay after class to talk to students about anything they need help with, and promptly answers students' emails. 3 exams and a 4 page paper are the only assignments for the entire semester, along with reading. Great stories, encourages class discussions. Makes you think about politics in new ways. Take his class.
I had some issues with my schedule while I was taking this class that made it difficult to get work in on time, but Professor Smith was willing to work with me to make sure I could get credit for my assignments. He won't accept late work if you don't talk to him about it in advance, but he's willing to work with you if you put the effort in.
Awesome semester! great lectures, really gives an opportunity for all opinions to be voiced, heard, and respected. course load and exams are straight forward. one of the better classes i've taken here.
I took International Relations I as an 8-week online course. The course has a workload, but is manageable (I work full time and did another 8-week course). You get to pick your own topics for the two main assignments. I disagree with the other reviewer about grading, as long as you can back up your statements with sources, you're good to go.
This man absolutely cares about what he's talking about. He has unique real world experience and he talks in depth about fascinating topics (assuming you like political science or foreign affairs). He is excellent as supporting and discussing all different political views, and hides his own political opinion from his students. Fantastic teacher.
Prof. Smith was one of there best I've had at NVCC. His lectures were constantly entertaining and engaging. The insight, lots of it firsthand, that he provided was was truly interesting too. Test questions were easy, but the 4 terms descriptions and 2 essays all in 75 minutes can be tough since he expects 5 paragraph essays. VERY fair grader though
This was an online course, 8-week. It was incredibly time consuming, and I would find myself doing the assignments from the beginning of the week until the deadline to get everything done. There are a lot of really interesting things, but I wasn't able to spend adequate time on the subjects I wanted to! Don't take if you are taking multiple classes
Prof. Smith is really considerate. He will give you chance after chance, and he is not a tough grader. I took his online class and he rewarded my efforts considering the heavy workload of the class. He is a professor that is the opposite of strict, and although the course was not designed by him it was so worth it.
Prof. Smith is a great educator. I took his 8 week online course, which was lecture heavy. He is not a tough grader and gives second chances. If you love the subject, this class will be a success. Prof. Smith answers to emails and provides good feedback.
Professor Smith gives amazing feed back and he is available to meet outside of class. Also, he responds to email very fast. As the class in general, its fair. He has great stories and he gives new perspective of politics. He gives 3 tests and one research paper. Tests are fairly okay, read the books he provides and the reading and you will be fine
Professor Smith is one of the best professors I'd ever had. He clearly knows what he is doing. He does give you the green light whether if you disagree with him or not on his thoughts or opinions.
Mr. Smith is a great dude who actually cares about his students. He's pretty friendly and he is open for discussion. If you have questions on the research paper, he lets you bring a draft to him and he critiques it leading to a higher grade.
I took Prof. Smith's 8 week online course over the summer. The class is not profoundly hard and as long as you do all the assignments you can manage your way to get an A. However, there is not a lot of visual in this course and requires readings from the book every week. I suggest that you do not take this class along with other online classes.
Mr. Smith was one of the greatest professors I have ever had. He's simply just a good dude.
I have taken five of Professors Smith Classes, an I have enjoyed every single one. He allows the class to think independently and encourages class discussions. There is some reading, and a lot of note taking. he does not give extra credit at all. If you come to class and pay attention there is no reason why a person should not get an A or B.
If you come to class and take part discussions, the test and final exam will not be hard. There is a research paper, if you follow the guidelines that he explains. There is no reason why a person would not get an high grade on the paper. He is willing to meet before or after class if there are any issues.
Does expect discussions and they come from the readings in the textbook, so make sure you read! For my class, we only had two exams; midterm and final. Both of exams required 2 essays but they weren't that bad. He isn't a harsh grader. We had a big research paper, but he offers to read over it before the due date so you can revise.
Professor Smith is the man. One of the coolest and most fascinating lecturers I've ever heard. Although if you're not really a political junkie then I'm not sure if you'd enjoy the class.
This class was genuinely frustrating, which was a shame given that the topics and discussions were interesting. His feedback on questions were poor, and overall its probably best to find another professor. I'm sure his in person classes are better, but go ahead and skip this online class. ELI procedures through NOVA make this class really annoying.
Professor Smith was by far my favorite professor. His lectures are informative and engaging. He tries his best to give fair representation of different ideas and is more than willing to have students disagree with him and each other. The discussions that he fostered were the most important parts of the class to me. Read the grading rubrics.
Professor Smith is one of my favorite professors. His class is reading intensive, but that's to be expected in political science. The lectures are based off of the readings and concepts from the exams. He relates the topics to what's going on in the real world with discussion. I learned a lot about american and international issues!
Professor Smith is an amazing teacher! While he definitely makes you work for an A and doesnt do extra credit, he really cares about hes students. He is quick to reply and always makes time for you. Attendance is really big because he doesnt post any of his slides. He only has 2 exams, 1 presentation, and a research paper. By far the best!!
Professor Smith is by far one of the best professors I've ever had at NOVA. He's very clear about what is going on in the class and what is expected of you. He creates class discussions by what's going on in the world and how it relates to the class and topic at hand. He also makes sure you're ready for the next college level - highly recommend!
He's awesome! He assigns a research paper which is very straight forward. He's a very fair grader and he's super nice! Pay attention to the power points because the tests are based off of them.
I took Professor Smith's PLS 135 and PLS 241 classes and thoroughly enjoyed them both. The grades for his class are: Mid-term, final, research paper, and for the PLS 241 class a presentation. There isn't any busy work to be done, but reading is required. Professor Smith will help you with your research paper if you need it.
I took Professor Smith's PLS 135 and PLS 140 classes and really enjoyed them. Lecture was always very interesting and assignments/exams always challenged me to think critically. He grades work and gives good feedback in a timely manner and if you need help with your research paper he'll take extra time to do so.
Professor Smith is honestly the best Political Science professor I've taken at NOVA. Not only have I learned so much from him but he has also learned from me as well. This is the type of class where you have to EARN your grade so do not slack off. Show up to class, pay attention to the lectures, complete the assignments and study hard!
I took Professor Smiths 120, 135 and comparative politics classes, all amazing lecture classes. Ive never enjoyed class discussions more in any of my years in school, his lecture content on strategy and international relations have pushed me to what I look to study beyond. 100% take if you have the option
Professor Smith's PLS 135 course is an outstanding starting point to gain an understanding of political science. His lecture content will help you navigate the readings and properly prepare you for the exams. His enthusiasm is second to none, and his genuine attention to detail ensures that each student is given every recourse needed to pass.

Good Teacher
Great guy. Even a better teacher. DONT skip class, its in your benefit to go. He gives all the test questions during lecture. DONT PASS UP ON THIS MAN! YOULL REGRET IT
Professor Smith is the embodiment of a professor committed to his student's success. He is willing to go out of his way to assist students in understanding the sometimes difficult concepts in the class. I greatly appreciated his drive to challenge students to think critically and to not be afraid to address all subjects. Great teacher.
This professor likes to talk about current events and relate them to the course chapters and objectives. He does not have office hours but is available to meet with you once you email him a date and time that works for you both. There are two exams, a research paper, and 1 final. (Read the vocab in the textbook, come to class, and ask questions).
Professor Smith is one of the greatest professors in the Northern Virginia Community College. His teaching method is very clear and useful, I took two classes with him and they were amazing. I learned the comparative political and differences between governments which were really interesting for me. I recommend you to take classes with him.
Probably one of the best professors I've had at NOVA. His lectures are very interesting and exams are very fair, there is hardly any material on the exam that wasn't mentioned in class, If you show up to class pay attention and take notes and theres no reason why you wouldn't do well in this class
Professor Smith made comparative politics a very interesting class. He definitely knows what he is talking about and is really good at explaining complicated issues in an easier way. 2 exams, essay based and defining vocab words. 1 power point presentation (individual). One 5 page research paper. Take his class!
Professor Smith is honestly one of the best professors at NOVA. I went into the course not knowing a THING about politics and Professor Smith made the subject so interesting and easy for me. The class is pretty straight-forward, there's only 3 exams and 1 research paper but you MUST attend class in order to pass. Overall it was a great class.
I took this class in the summer so it was almost 4 hours long and Prof. Smith lectured pretty much the whole time with a small break in the middle. His lectures and power point are very useful since he basically gives you the answers for his test. He does like when his students engage in the discussion and he is very outgoing professor.
I took Professor Smith twice in the Fall of 2018 and the Summer of 2019, and he is by far my favorite professor I have ever had. He encourages civil discourse. If he says to write something down, write it down, it will serve you well. Take notes, participate, read the material, attend class, promptly ask him for help if needed, and you'll succeed!
Professor Smith is clear, and the books he chooses for his classes are actually readable. His lectures give a lot of opportunity for good understanding, but make sure to review the text and/or notes for a few specifics.
Professor smith is a VERY educated and smart professor. BUT, if youre not educated in political science or dont know too much about it DO NOT TAKE HIM! His exams are really hard and he expects alot of specifics on his research paper. Hes a very nice professor but he was tough and theres no extra credit.
His lectures provide real world examples and experience, are interactive and engaging, and provide a chance for you to ask questions and learn more. He facilitated the exchange of ideas that make college a transformative and eye-opening experience instead of high school 2.0.
Professor Smith is by far one if the BEST professors ive ever had. I took 3 classes with him and have not regretted it. It is best to attend class if you want to get a good grade because his slides arent available online. He is always willing to work with you if he sees that youre putting in the effort. You wont regret taking his classes!
Enrolled in PLS241 as an online course with Prof Smith. He assigns a large amount of homework. We had 2 textbooks, weekly readings from both, usually 70 pages in total; he did test on them in exams. 2 essays & 2 discussion board posts EVERY SINGLE WEEK, in addition to 2 exams and PowerPoint project. We have other classes, understand?
I took professor smith for two classes before I transferred to a four-year university and is the reason I am a Political Science major. I have one main thing to say, compared to other community college professors he is really helpful in preparing you for what to really expect if you plan to transfer in the future. Best professor at NOVA hands down
Professor Smith makes politics interesting. His command of the classroom makes you want to participate and learn more. All of his tests are one format, just study the vocab words and try your best to make a study group. It helps a lot.
Professor Smith is by far the most truthful professor when it comes to politics. He had amazing lectures that opened our eyes to many systems that we were unaware of and he made sure we understood what was being taught. 3 exams, 1 research paper. He genuinely cares and tells us what to take notes on for the exam. Engaging, honest, funny, & caring!
The best professor you could ask for. Even if you aren't a political science major, professor Smith makes taking this class worth it. Amazing lectures and all the instructions are clear just follow what he says and you'll get an A. He relates every topic with a real life example which makes the class fun. Hands down the best professor you could ask
All of his classes are never boring, he has fantastic in class discussions that really benefit you. He is an extremely fair grader and none of his assignments are too difficult. You go to class and write down what he says and you will be sure to pass. He also gives great feedback with work and papers so you know exactly what needs work.
I took Professor Smiths class a year ago and loved it. His lectures are so engaging and help you learn to discuss different ideas rationally. Whenever we had a paper to turn in, he was more than happy to sit down with us individually to help us improve them. I highly recommend taking as many of his classes as you can!
I had the pleasure of having Professor Smith for several classes and I always looked forward to his classes. I am now at George Mason and have yet to find a proffesor to his standards. It is very simple to get an A in his classes. You just have to pay attention to his lectures, be participant and always ask questions.
The professor is very understanding and gives a lot of good feedback on the assignments. This class was very stressful for me because I put many hours into the assigned homework, projects, and papers. There were some that I thought I would do good on, but ended up with an okay grade. It's a hard class if you're not into international relations.
Professor Smith is by far one of the best professors at NoVA. You will work for your grade in this course, but that isn't a bad thing. The amount of amazing experience I had in the class is second to none. Be warned exams and a paper are the ONLY grades you have, but if you participate in class, they are extremely easy. He is a gold tier professor.
I took Mr. Smiths PLS 211 class in Fall 2019 and I definitely recommend it for people interested in political science! The work load was manageable and his teaching style is very engaging and thought provoking. Make sure to attend class if you want to do well on exams!
Professor Smith is just a really great teacher and an even better person. Despite the circumstances given by the current pandemic, he seamlessly transitioned the class into something stable. Lectures are amazing, I feel like I'm actually learning something important, he is a very good listener, and gives back strong feedback. Best teacher on campus
I took three classes with professor smith during my time at NOVA and he is by far my favorite professor. Most of his classes are based on a mid term, a term paper, and a final. If you go to class and write what he tells you to write you will definitely get a good grade. He is always ready to help you out and is just overall an amazing professor
He's a cool dude, pretty laid back, and cut me some breaks. His lectures were interesting and despite the pandemic, he seamlessly transitioned into online class. Even tho he ended up being my worst grade for the semester he is the best professor that I've had at NOVA so far
Professor Smith is one of the most caring professors. He is passionate about what he teaches and wants all his students to learn. He listens to his students to make sure they are all able to understand and participate in class. He gives amazing feedback on assignments and takes the time to help you learn from your mistakes. I highly recommend him.
This class deals more with current politics and government matters. The learning objects are clear. But there are 2 papers a week as well as 2 discussions. If writing isn't your thing, maybe not the class for you. One midterm and one final are the only tests. Grades are either same day or day after the due date. Any emails I sent he responded fast.
Best professor I've ever had. He has been my professor three times. He genuinely cares about his students and makes the subject fun, engaging and the energy in class is always great. Very knowledgeable in his field. He's honestly far better than most professors I've had so far at GMU.
He's a great professor makes you look into a world of politics with other countries. He listens to your opinion and encourages people to speak and vote, Grading is 3 research papers and he wants you to use peer reviewed journals. uses turnit in, What you talk about in class doesn't relate to what is graded but it is interesting
This review has been long overdue.I have taken over 4 classes with Professor Smith. They have all been so amazing and enriching. His syllabus and expectations are crystal clear, spends almost 2 whole classes going over what he expects and how he grades. Such a fun person, easy going, and very knowledgeable on the subject matter. you won't regret it
Amazing professor who leads the international relations club at the Loudoun campus. He teaches from an unbiased perspective, and when I got into a lengthy verbal dispute with another student he truly tried his best to keep the peace, and I respect him a lot for that. His lectures are really engaging and it's hard to not want to pay attention.
Professor Smith was the best professor Ive had at NOVA this semester. Assignments are research papers and briefings, he always gives great feedback. You learn a lot from his lectures, and he always gives great tips for writing papers and what topics are the best to write about. Overall, highly recommend.
Rude and abrasive professor. He only assigned three papers with the exact same prompt, and then two briefings on the paper and that was the entire course. Disrespectful and lazy. Waste of money and the requirements for the paper was unrealistically difficult.
Youre graded on just papers, participation, and briefings on your papers. I thought based on the reviews hed be a good professor to take, however the only reason I got an A in the class was b/c I put in the work. He doesnt help you prepare for the briefings and what he wants us to present is opposite of what the syllabus says.
Professor Smith is overqualified for teaching at a community college. This is an easy class to pass as long as you either pay attention in class/take notes or read the book. There are two books assigned for US Gov/Pol, but nothing will be on exams that weren't covered in class. He stays late so students can finish exams, and looks papers over.10/10
Professor Smith is a very nice professor. I took him Spring 21. In class, we had to write three big papers, 2 of them being, issues in the US, and 1 international issue. He is very laid-back and gives clear instructions on the format of the paper. After each paper is turned in, you discuss the information you found with the class for 1-2 minutes.
Wonderful professor who really cares about his students and always has the best stories to go along with his lectures! The class is a perfect combo of discussion and lecture, so you have a good opportunity to get a great grade by listening and reviewing slides. You won't regret taking his class, if I'm wrong, I'll buy the beer at our NOVA reunion!
This class had 3 big research papers with briefings and cover pages and 5 one page responses. He makes you work for your grade and will take off one point per grammar infraction. He is one of the toughest graders I have ever had at NOVA. His classes will strengthen your writing skills if you listen to his input. His class is what you make it.
I really enjoyed my class with Professor Smith in Spring 2021. He is a great professor and gave one of the best classes Ive had at NOVA. Extremely interesting and engaging lectures on relevant topics. Provides students a very clear syllabus. We had a lot of freedom to choose the topics we would cover in our essays. I highly recommend him!
As long as you listen to instructions and take good notes during lectures, you will see success in Professor Smith's class. He gives great explanations of concepts and centers lectures around current events, which is very informative. Would recommend!
It was my first time taking a comparative politics class. It was interesting & I enjoyed it. Professor Smith is a great professor. I like how he explains the lecture about the world of politics about other countries. It's just like a story! I recommend you all to take his class. He's an intelligent, caring, helpful, and respectful man.
He is the best professor I have had. He helps you become a better student and explains things in way that is easy to understand.
Best professor hands down
Professor Smith is the best
He loves to see his students grow in their knowledge of the world and loves to see his students succeed and is the best.
Professor Smith's passion for international politics and political theory is evident in his lectures. You can tell he's excited by the course material and teaching it to his students. He's one of those professors who wants to see his students succeed and does a great job explaining his expectations for assignments. If you can, take his class!
Great professor. Nothing to complain about, reasonable grader, and passionate. I got a C, but that is because I stopped doing work since it would transfer to GMU as pass/fail, but every assignment I did I got a high 90. There is a decent amount of writing (manageable), but since he is a fair grader it does not matter. Just follow the directions.
He plays favorites and does not care to hide it. He relies heavily on AI to grade your weekly assignments and your final paper. He seems to also teach his courses from HIS point of view (Liberal *nothing wrong with that*) but it can become confusing at times to distinguish if its a fact or opinion. He also cuts students off when they are speaking.
Professor Smith is amazing, gives great grades, and is easy to reach. Would definitely take him again!
It was an absolute pleasure taking the course with Professor Smith last year. I would take every PLS course with him if I could.
I like that he has a unique class structure. You're required to do weekly presentations about your assigned country and it keeps you engaged with the course content. I wish he lectured a bit more because I didn't learn that much.
He rocks! Best professor ever. His lectures are passionate and well-thought out. Whoever said he picks favorites is wrong. He impulses classmates that want to participate and welcomes it! And of course you will be his favorite if you match his passion for politics and demonstrate genuine hard work :)
