Awesome guy. Grades kinda hard, but its a great class.
Really easy going, knows what he's talking about. If you're looking for an easy grade take 100, if you want to help yourself out and learn stuff, take this guy.
Good teacher, tries to make class as enjoyable as a Q class can be. A pretty fair grader, exams aren't too difficult. If you go to class then don't bother buying the book, the notes from class cover everything you need to know.
Difficult grader on research assignment. Speaks way too fast during lectures so a laptop is a must for notes. Quantitative nature of this class is not for the faint-hearted. Stifano's also a bit cocky, but overall a cool guy.
Very funny and interesting guy, makes a mandatory class (for Comm majors and minors) as fun as possible. Despite the boring nature of the class, I actually found my self wanting to go to listen to his commentaries on the material. Very fair professor, in regards to grading, deadlines, and extra credit. He does random attendance, so show up!
Best professor I've ever had! Steven just graduated with his PHD, so he understands where we're coming from. He presents the material in an interesting way that relates to our generation. He's honest and very funny. I always want to go to class. I'd recommend him to anyone.
Quality professor. Wants his students to do well but you must put in the work if you want the good grade. Material is difficult, but if you put the work in you're almost guaranteed to do well in this class. Steve is personable and hilarious. He makes the terrible subject actually somewhat interesting with his humor. Definitely recommend!!!
Stifano is an okay professor and he is funny during class. However, his class was awful. Persuasion was not enjoyable due to the group project that is harshly graded and is the biggest part of your overall grade. Tons of outside work expected for this class. I would avoid. This class had a lot of potential to be good but it was far from it.
Professor Stifano is awesome. he is very funny and relatable which makes his lectures interesting and easy. the group project is ridiculous though, there was way too much that needed to be done and the amount of time that needed to be put into the project was insane. Stifano is an extremely tough grader but honestly very fair.
Great professor. He is hands down the best public speaker I have listened to; he really finds ways to relate to the students. Exams are pretty difficult, so studying is definitely necessary. Pop quizzes here and there. Discussions are super easy and pointless. Not a bad class overall.
As long as you make an effort to do well, you will do well. Prof Sitfano makes an effort to relate to his students while lecturing them, making it easier to pay attention and comprehend the material. Not to mention, with every example he gives relatable examples, sometimes using his own life experiences as examples, to help us understand concepts.
The class itself isn't bad but you have to deal with two creative projects which suck as well as three, three page papers so if your taking this course as an easy A with minimal work, I wouldn't.
I love this guy! (Compared to my other professors this semester) He's super cool and hip. The class really isn't that hard besides a few reflection papers, no big deal. It's really interesting and my favorite class this semester!
Stifano is an amazing professor. His lectures are clear and concise. He truly cares about each and every one of his students and wants them to succeed in life. The course itself is not difficult, as long as you put in the effort you will end up with the grade you deserve. Also, the exams are more example-based rather than just definitions.
Steve is an awesome professor. I took statistics sophomore year and got a C-. We did generally the same thing, plus more, second semester and I understood everything. He presents the material very clearly and his lectures are easy to understand and are entertaining. He can relate to students and gives great examples to make sure everyone's good.
Stifano is a legend. 3 exams. Got an A-, B-, and C+ on the final and still got an A. Tremendous public speaker. Never heard him say um ONCE. Lectures are entertaining and informative. Mostly everything is common sense. 3 papers that are not that hard. 2 projects which are interesting but tedious. this guy should teach every single class at UCONN.
Hes funny sometimes
Professor Stifano is awesome. He posts power points but doesnt put the important stuff on it so you definitely have to show up to class. Topics are basic but still interesting. He's very passionate and not at all boring. Pretty much guaranteed an A
Professor Stifano is awesome! His lectures are interesting, doesn't give too much work, and the exams are straight forward. Listening to his Commpendium Podcasts for reflections are really interesting too. Take Comm 1000!!
Stifano is a great teacher, and as this course is a requirement for COMM majors, he presents the information clearly. He's pretty funny, but you definitely still have to work for your grade if you're not a math person, but it's manageable
There's a lot of requirements for the class, but they are all spaced out and manageable as long as you stay on top of your work. The exams aren't that bad, just study because there are only 25 MC, so each question is worth a lot. Also the discussions are pretty stress-free, just show up and participate for full credit! DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!!!!!!!
Stifano has very interesting lectures, be sure to take notes. The exams aren't that bad, you need to study key terms though. It's a lot of common sense. The reflections aren't that bad, the podcasts are a bit boring but you only have to do three throughout the whole semester. The course is really interesting
Class was easy and straight forward however there is a lot of busy work assigned. There are three exams that are worth a total of 40% and expect pop quizzes in lecture. I would not recommend getting the textbook since all material is covered in class. As long as you do your work and attend discussion you will be fine
Professor Stifano is an amazing lecturer, however your grade in this class is dependent upon which TA you get, some are very easy going and don't grade that hard while others make it impossible for you to get an A. Don't buy the book as all the material is covered in class. Exams are 25 multiple choice questions and can be tricky.
Professor Stifano is one of the best public speakers i have seen. He is extremely straightforward and tells you exactly what to do in order to do well in his class. If you go to class and take notes then don't bother purchasing the text book. Stifano's lectures are interesting and funny. Would highly recommend taking this class.
stifano truly wants to see his students do well. he is funny and an amazing lecturer. he really knows what he's talking about. go to class and take solid notes and you will never need the book.
He is an AWESOME lecturer. He's really good at making sure you can relate to the information. I would take more of his classes! You don't really need the book, but you do need to go to lecture, he posts slides but there isn't a lot of content on them.
Steve is a good guy, he's really passionate about Comm. This class is really easy but still interesting. All lecture slides are online but he supplements them in lecture. Discussions are mandatory for a good grade but also pointless. Steve tries really hard to be hip and relate to students which is nice. Easy A, fun class
Okay this class is pretty lit and Stifano is a amazing professor. His slideshows are aesthetically pleasing and he explains everything to the fullest degree with humor and realness. There is a lot of things you're going to be learning too so show up to class! But the class is a lot of work with research studies and the podcast reflections.
THIS IS NOT AN "EASY" A CLASS. There is quite a bit of work to do. There are weekly Friday discussions that take attendance, and you have to participate. 3 short papers (2-3 pgs) reflecting on podcasts. Pop quizzes in class that require clicker and some questions are from tiny lecture details. Easy exams if you've been to lecture. Very few As.
TAs are pretty bad. Grade depends on discussion sections basically. Exams are tricky. They take FOREVER grading, it has been over a week since I took the final and grades are not up.
Grading on discussion papers can be pretty tough. The TA's don't really do much to help you prepare for exams. They essentially tell you to study your notes. Tests can be pretty tricky. No memorization here, know the theories and be able to use them to answer questions. Don't miss a class because slides posted are vague and sometimes one word.
3000q was so hard but it needs to be taken for Comm majors. Stifano tries to make it as clear as he can and honestly taught the stats part better than that stats professor I took. Try's to understand Comm majors don't like stats. Don't skip class
How to get an A in COMM1000: 1) know the definition of every word on powerpoints and memorize the models(usually only 6-12 slides) 2) take notes on what he SAYS 3) Participate in discussion and put time into your reflections and projects. Overall a phenomenal professor that wants his students to succeed. One of the best I've ever had.
This class is very interesting and applicable to real life. I loved learning what we did. However, the class has gotten more difficult in the past few years b/c he didn't want it to be an 'easy A'. There are 3 papers and 2 projects that aren't too bad and the exams aren't too bad but you need to actually study and memorize things. Overall great!!
Contrary to popular belief, this class is not easy. Stifano is a great lecturer and the material is very very interesting. Exams are hard and you need to spent a lot of time studying. Pop quizzes, projects, participation, and research are a big part of your grade. TAs grade hard and you will likely need more luck than skill most times to get an A.
Participation grades in discussion, clicker in lecture. Should be an easy class but there is a lot to do outside like research studies in which you learn nothing but are still required to do, and chances are, you wont get credit cause the system doesnt work. Knows people are taking it because they have to, yet feels the need to make it difficult.
I mean it's COMM 1000. Yeah it's gotten harder but overall it's still not too bad. My TA was the only hard one which made discussion difficult, but I studied the night before each exam and got 96s on all of them. I would compare it to SOC 1001 but with more things to do like papers, discussions, group projects, etc.
COMM 1000 isn't an "easy gen ed" anymore but as long as you follow the criteria as closely as possible, you can do really well. There are pop quizzes in lecture and participation is how you get points in discussion. Make flashcards, study with friends, and you'll do well!
Prof. Stifano had great lectures, funny and provided good examples to help you remember concepts. Exams take questions straight from the notes and are really easy.
Here's my advice - Do not take this class unless it is required for your major. It is not an easy A unless you have a good TA. Discussion will kill your grade unless your lucky. It's too bad that the discussions are awful because the lectures and Professor Stifano are great.
Here is my advice: don't take this course unless you are required to do so, especially for international student, this course will kill your GPA, professor pass concepts really fast, and exam has questions that professor maybe only briefly mention once at lecture, and strongest proof is here: the #1 exam we got has an average 78/150
Stifano makes funny jokes to try to relate to the material in lecture. If you are expecting an A or perfection, don't. His exams were very tricky and easy to mess up on if you don't study the material. There are pop quizzes unannounced in discussion. But, if you put in the work and go to office hours often, it will help you succeed in the course.
I loved this class, the content is very easy to understand. However, Stifano makes you do a lot of dumb projects.
I loved this class, the content is very easy to understand. However, Stifano makes you do a lot of dumb projects. The projects are very easy, so if you just follow the rubric you should get a good grade. The exams are pretty much all vocab and do not take much prep.
Professor Stifano is by far the best lecturer I have ever listened to. He keeps things interesting and makes connections between material in the course and real life. Stifano is an extremely fair professor.
While the discussions for this course depends on your TA the lectures are absolutely amazing, beware you will get so into listening to him you'll forget to take notes. It is clear he knows what he is talking about and is passionate in teaching, this is the best lecture I have ever had am I am going into my junior year.
Stifano gives great lectures which keep you engaged. He uses memorable examples to drill the material into your head. Lectures and discussions are a must. Although it is not necessarily a difficult class there are still a lot of places to lose points to stay on top of the assignments and go to discussion and be ready to participate.
THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A! i took it for fun, but hugely regret it. sure, stifano is great. but discussion section kill your grade. the little projects, activities, and pop quizzes will add up. i did great on the tests (90 on first two) but everything else brought my grade down. i suggest not taking this unless you really have to. NOT AN EASY A!!
I thought that this class would be easy but no its not. Professor Stifano is great in lecture but his exams are scenario based multiple choice questions which you really have to study. I failed the first one and then got a 93 on the second one. But the projects are straight forward. If you put in some effort for the exams, then you will succeed.
Prof. Stifano is great at lectures. Really knowledgable, funny, and up to date with modern times. The book for the class is new, and helps supplement the course material, but only really needed if you plan on skipping a lot of the lectures. Biggest advice: GO TO DISCUSSION! That is where all the quizzes and challenges are!
At the beginning of this course, Stifano will tell how Comm 1000 is no longer an easy A and he is right. Stifano explicitly tells the TAs to not give out perfect scores on basically any assignment which makes getting an A very hard. Great guy and I enjoyed going to lectures, but the grading for an intro comm course isn't the best.
Professor Stifano is a bro.
I do miss taking Professor Stifano's class because he always played music before lectures and he is always entertaining. The only problem with the class is the discussion challenges in discussion because you have to attend so you can get a descent score. I failed the first exam but did well on the last two and the projects really helped my grade.
10/10 would recommend. His lectures are amazing and he has very interesting powerpoints with videos, music, etc. He explains everything in detail and I feel like I could teach the class myself with how good of notes his teaching allows us to take!
The course has gotten much harder than previous, though it is still very do-able. the exams only have 30 questions, so in order to get a good grade you need to be near perfect in your test taking. Your grade in discussion is based on discussion challenges, meaning your grade is dictated on how well your group performs, not you. Funny guy, though.
Gives no extra credit so no leeway when it comes to grading. He's fine as a professor, teaches the content well. Tests are a little tricky but doable, and way too many projects and work outside of lecture. Many group projects and a few writing assignments and soo many quizzes. Discussion is mandatory. 1000 points possible which is way too many.
Stephen Stifano is a great teacher. Most of the class is just lectures but he finds a way to keep the class entertained and pay attention. He makes COMM interesting and fun. He also manages to relate the subject in ways that most people have experienced to help his students remember course material.
I love Stifano. Comm1000 was the class that made me decide to be a comm major and I still don't regret it. His lectures are amazing and so easy to understand. Would highly recommend him.
Dr. Stifano was a a great lecturer but the exams were kind of tricky and if you don't go to lecture and study, you won't pass. Most grades are based on discussion quizzes and challenges that are pretty challenging. There's a lot of work but the content is interesting.
Amazing lecture- very organized and up to date. Plays music before class starts which I liked. Your grade depends on your TA's grading and how well you studied for the exams.
Walking in to class with either pump up or relaxing music always started it off well. He's a great speaker and his lectures are very interesting. Youll do much better if you go because he provides anecdotes for much of the info and the exams Q's are very situational. GO TO DISCUSSION and do all assignments. I screwed myself by skipping a few.
This is the best class I've taken at UConn so far! Lectures are amazing and make the material stick with you better even though it's not hard to begin with. There are 2 projects, 5 pop quizzes, and two 3 page papers. There are 2 midterms and a final, but I got a 90, 93, and a 98! Would recommend this as a GPA booster and elective class!
He is an amazing lecturer, I was an upperclassman having to take this class with a bunch of freshman and I didn't dread going to his lectures at all. He is entertaining and knows how to keep your attention and making this a very interesting topic. There are some projects that are seemingly pointless that you do in discussion, but its not hard
Stifano has to be one of the chilliest professors at UCONN. His lectures are very clear and straightforward, and so are his discussion assignments that he gives the TAs. It's all about putting the effort in to study. Class is not difficult at all as long as you look over material often. Deff a class you won't dread going to.
If youre an A seeker like me: take this class with caution. You will HAVE a to go to every lecture as there are pop quizzes and the tests rely on his lecture material. Requires a lot of work + sometimes you dont get much out of it as the quizzes, projects, and discussion challenges can bring your grade down even if you get perfect scores on exams
One of the best lecturers I've ever had! All my friends think so too. It IS Comm so it's not a hard class or anything - easy A if you study even a little bit. He makes going to class fun, super entertaining. Seems like a great guy. Makes an easy, necessary, class that you would expect to be mind-numbing, a very enjoyable time!
Stifano is an amazing lecturer and keeps the course very interesting. The course is not the easiest, you have to work for the A, but it's definitely one of the easier ones. The discussions are mandatory attendance, this is when the quizzes and discussion challenges happen. Overall would take again.
Professor Stefano is an an awesome lecturer. But with the TA I was given made it impossible to get an A, unless I got 100's on all three exams which is not realistic. Whether you worked on an assignment for hours or for 20 mins, she gave everyone the same low grade in order to make a comm 1000 class way harder than it should've been.
I walked into this class expecting an easy A, and then found myself trying very hard for an A-. This class has changed, it's not the COMM1000 everyone used to know. Most TAs grade papers and projects harshly. Also, Professor Stifano does not allow rounding so if you receive an 89.9 as a final grade, you are receiving a B+.
great personality
A lot of work but he is a great lecturer.
This is an intro class but it didn't feel like it when I was in it. you have to do 5 hours of research, two 3 page papers, and two other projects. There is way too much work for an intro class like this especially when there were 700 people in it. He's a nice guy but he's trying to make this class way more challenging than it has to be.
You will enjoy this class and you will even enjoy going to your discussion every week. Stifano has amazing lectures that are hilarious and engaging and he is just an overall down-to-earth guy. This course is a must-take for any UConn student.
This is a great class and I absolutely love it. If it were not for the engaging and hilarious anecdotes that the professor gives I probably wouldn't understand everything to its fullest.
Absolutely love this class and Dr. Stifano. He makes lectures so fun and you won't dread going. People say there's too many assignments for an intro class but none of its hard and they're good grade boosters if you don't do well on the exams. Discussion is completely useless but overall a great class.
Professor Stifano is an amazing lecturer and will hold your attention. Hes hilarious and gives fantastic examples during the lecture which come up on the exam. BUT there are pop quizzes in the discussion session and several projects and papers along with exams. Exams are mostly vocab and example heavy.
Stifano is such a nice guy and a great lecturer. He really tries to make lecture interesting and you honestly won't understand the slides if you don't go. DO NOT miss discussion theres something graded practically every week and they actually made a dent in your grade. If you study a decent amount the tests aren't bad at all.
Very good lecturer. Not a lot of work but you have to go to discussion and lecture or else you will not do well. DONT buy the textbook - its expensive and you will not use it. Overall the course was pretty easy but TA's can grade the assignments unfairly which sucks and there are some creative projects
Professor Stifano is an amazing lecturer! Attendance in lecture is and discussion is mandatory. The TAs who teach discussion sections act as if teaching is a chore and they can be very defensive about their grading. However, this class is worth taking because of Professor Stifano's engaging lectures.
Professor Stifano is the man! His lecture's are amazing and he always made me want to attend class. His anecdotes and stories helped me learn a ton but the TA's are absolute hardo's. They are super tough graders for a 1000 course which is frustrating. You must go to every single discussion because they are always graded.
This guy takes COMM 1000 way too seriously. You will not get an A in this class. If you miss your discussion section on Friday even once you're bound to fail, since your TA's require you to write a two page essay to makeup for the absence. Essays and podcast reflections are graded unfairly by TA's. Tests are difficult. Pop quizzes are unnecessary.
I took him for COMM 3000Q and this is the type of class that you have to be on top of. The only downside of taking this class in the summer sessions is that you still have to take these mini quizzes that are honestly impossible to do well in. He at least cares and if you show that your eager to do well he will do whatever it takes to help.
COMM 1000 with Stifano is so good that I actually look forward to going to his classes every week. He is a great teacher and is SO funny. He's like a comedian. Not a lot of work and very easy to get an A. His lectures are so good that I take all my Husky for a Day students to his class even when I am not enrolled the class myself. Best class ever
Stifano is an amazing lecturer- class is interesting which motivates me to go. Lectures are necessary to go to because his power points do not have much info on them. The tests are somewhat difficult and pretty specific so it's important to study a lot. He makes comm interesting- always make sure to go to discussion because there are pop quizzes
Had Stifano for COMM1000. Pretty easy class overall. There are some tedious assignments like the group project, the 1000 words assignment and the research assignments as well. I went to all lectures and then reviewed them and never picked up the textbook and did just fine.
Dr. Stifano is a real great professor. He makes his lectures enjoyable and it will make you want to go to class. The class is graded on more than just exams which is nice. No study guide for exams but they aren't too bad. He is very approachable and is open to talking to students after class.
Nice guy but the TA's are ridiculous graders. Did not get over an 85 on any of my written projects even though I met with my TA to go over it and made the changes she told me to. Not enough research points given out, so do every single one. Makes the class a lot harder than it has to be, grades really hard for an 1000 level class.
Stifano gives really interesting lectures. He's engaging and makes the topics enjoyable. He makes the class slightly harder than it needs to be, but it's still manageable. Though I didn't have any issues with how my TA graded, getting a 100 on any of the projects is highly unlikely. Participate in discussions and put effort in, you'll be fine.
Stifano is a great lecturer- but for an introductory class this its difficult. The TA's grade things very unfairly and there are pop quizzes in discussion. On his power points he puts 1 word and you have to quickly write down everything he is saying. The exams are pretty difficult even if you study. Overall really hard to get an A.
He is a really intresting lecturer, but make sure you go to lecture and take good notes becuase the power points dont have everything on them. Dont bother with the textbook, you won't need it. There are pop quizes but if you have been going to lecture they are easy. Homework is graded harshy.
best professor i've ever had. highly highly recommend
Stifano is an amazing lecturer which makes going to class worth it - which is great because the book is unnecessary so you need to rely on lecture material to study for the exam. The TAs are pretty tough graders but overall the content of the class is interesting enough considering its a gen ed. Study lightly for the exams and you"ll do fine.
Stifano is such a witty, fun professor! He is a great public speaker, and has so much confidence in doing so! My only complaint about this course is that the TA's grade so unnecessarily hard. You'll do a graded assignment exactly the way it needed to be done but they'll still give you a 9/10. Just a little annoyance but otherwise great class!
Grading scale and rules is wack, this class is basically made around the fact that it will be impossible to get an A without you fighting for your grade yourself since both Mr Stifano (I doubt he actually participates in the grading) and the TAs grade excessively hard and find any way to take points odd. Should not be a mandatory gen ed at all.
A lot of people love the lectures, others do not (me being one). This class felt extremely forced to be harder than necessary, which im guessing is due to the stereotype that comm is an easy A. Lectures were annoying, hard to achieve a decent score, grading policies were overly harsh & strict, the class is way too underwhelming for this much work
I didnt love this class. Many love his lectures, they were fine. Exams were mostly memorizing concepts & being able to apply them to real situations. Discussions had pop quizzes as well as many group projects. TAs seemed to grade really hard in an attempt to make mundane assignments seem more important. It was a fine Gen Ed but not amazing.
The class is engaging and interesting, he's a good story-teller, and some projects are fun. Complaints: The grading in this class is ridiculous, I know he wants to get rid of the stigma of COMM being an easy A. Btw there is a picture and video project, a podcast essay, 5 pop quizzes, 5 discussion activities, 100 hours research participation.
One of the most memorable professors I've ever had a UConn. He had the most interesting and engaging lectures. If you use flashcards (like quizlet) to study for the exams from what's in the book, you'll get an A. The discussions are mandatory and the TAs grade a little tougher, but I think it's because the exams are so easy. Overall great class
My favorite lecturer so far, learned a lot in his class and he makes all of the lectures funny and relevant. Exams are so easy if you go through notes and maybe look up some quizlets. Discussion groups are a pain sometimes because of group work, but the class is interesting and you get a lot out of it.
Don't know the guy so I can not say anything about him. The class is easy af, but because UConn thinks they're Harvard sick the TA's grade discussion on a 8/10 is to a 100 basis. SO essentially making it harder to get As and making them look like this class is actually complicated. I mean if I spent 20 years studying comm I'd be pissed off too.
Great lecturer. Very lively. Who would have thought that the COMM professor is good at communicating. Course content is made interesting.
Going to this class is like going to a TedTalk! Every single lecture was entertaining and interesting, and the material is very applicable and engaging. Exams are very doable and projects are actually fun. If I could take Professor Stifano's class again, I'd do it in a heartbeat. 10/10 would recommend!
Stifano is genuinely the best professor I have ever had. He cares about making the topic interesting and you still learn and absorb so much information. Go to the lectures and you will not need the textbook. Go to discussion because sometimes there are pop quizzes and graded assignments. Really grateful I got the chance to take his class
Professor Stifano himself was awesome. His lectures are engaging and the course is very well put together. As long as you attend lecture you don't need the textbook. While midterms and the final are easy, the TA's grade the projects (3 in total) very harshly. Discussion sections are mandatory for pop quizzes or graded activities.
Best class at UConn. Puts in a real effort to make the class entertaining and he succeeds. Have to pay attention in class because he doesnt write a lot on the slides. Exams are easy as long as you study. A video project, photo project, podcast essay, four pop quizzes, 100 research credit points, graded lecture activities. All evenly spaced out.
This class is pretty easy. You don't need the textbook, so don't bother getting it. The only thing that made me get a B- was the discussion. You have a quiz every week but if you read through lecture notes and participate you'll do fine. There is also a video group project, so make sure you put a decent amount of effort in it. Its not too hard
Stifano is a great professor. However, the class has been made unnecessarily hard. COMM 1000 had the reputation of being the easiest class, but that is no longer the case. It's one of those classes where you can't get a 100 and the test can have some material that was not really covered. Great professor, interesting content, bad grading scale.
Prof Stifano is an AMAZING lecturer! The catch: very few words on the slides so you really have to listen. Take detailed notes, you will be fully prepared for the exams, its very easy online w/ open note. The only downside is that the TAs are a bit harsh with grading, but the lectures are genuinely enjoyable. He's the reason I want to major in Comm
Professor Stifano was an excellent and funny professor. I really enjoyed his lectures because he explains the material really clearly and makes lecture really engaging. The exams were not too bad and you need to study for them. The discussion secrtion wasn't too bad either as long as you put in the work to complete the assignments. He is a gem.
Taking this class online was pretty simple. He'd post two or three 30-min lectures each week and the 3 open-note tests were MC. Don't get tricked into buying the "new" textbook! You won't need it. Really. The TAs can grade hard on the 5 papers we get assigned, so get on their good side for good grades, like email them or go to office hours.
Professor Stifano is the best. His lectures are like stand up comedy while also being extremely informative. He cares about his students and has a lot of info to share. Your grade is based on discussion section quizzes and a midterm and final. You need to take notes and attend lecture which is easy to do when lectures are so fun. Take this class!
LOVED this professor and his lectures. Has a soothing voice and is consistently connecting material to real-life examples so it is easy to understand and remember. I hate watching lectures but never seemed to mind watching his. Would highly recommend it.
I took this semester online, Stifano was by far the most organized in terms of remote classes. His asynchronous lectures were super easy to follow, you can watch them on double speed and still get the points. As long as you take notes on the lectures, you'll get A's on the exams. My only poor experience was my TA was a harsh grader.
Stifano was a great lecturer, his videos were always engaging and straight the point. He is an overall good professor, but I can't say the same for the TA. The TA grade all your work and they are very very harsh graders. This will make or break your grade which sucks because the material is easy to learn and understand.
Professor Stifano's lectures were great. The textbook wasn't actually needed and the exams were straightforward. TAs can grade harshly, but if you put in the effort, you should get decent marks. I luckily had a great TA whose feedback helped me on future assignments.
Professor Stifano is great. I took this class during COVID with everything asynchronous so I don't know what his in-person classes are like. He usually posts 2 video lectures per week and each is about half an hour. The lectures are very clear and easy to understand. Make sure to take notes and write down the examples he mention.
Dr. Longo is an amazing professor. I took this class to fulfill a gen ed, but really enjoyed it. He made this course interesting and applied the coursework to every day life. His exams were easy, but TAs graded assignments harshly. Overall, it was not difficult to be engaged and understand the material.
Prof Stifano is a great professor, really enjoyed his class, it is set up for you to do well in the class as long as you put the work in. Exams are fair, and the assignments are straightforward. Lectures are very informative and could use the textbook here and there. Overall, good class and would recommend him for anybody for an gen-ed.
Professor Stifano's Comm 1000 is very enjoyable and his tests are fair. I did not use the textbook and did very well by just attending lectures and taking notes. I Everything on tests is covered in lectures and he is entertaining to listen to and is really animated.
my favorite professor at uconn thus far. I took COMM 1000 and his lectures are very engaging and not boring which is hard to come by for big lectures. attendance does matter though because he says important things in lectures that are not on the slides. you only need to attend 8/12 discussion sections and the tests are not too hard.
Professor Stifano is THE BEST. You do need to go to lectures because he talks about the slides he posts, but he makes it worth it because he is so funny and engaging. exams can be challenging but they are open note. The discussion is required, but you are allowed to miss 4 which was helpful. You are lucky if you have him as a professor!!!
Gives great lectures. Keeps your attention and instills some passion for the subject. Take very detailed notes during lectures and you'll do very well on the exams. Exams are open note. Projects are simple but I felt the grading was rather tough. Probably just depends on the TA.
very good lecturer, one of the best at uconn. go to lecture, take good notes and you will have success in this class
This professor was so passionate about his subject and made sure to keep the students engaged while lecturing. The only problem was the assignments given through the year were NOT easy A's as the class makes it out to be but they were also engaging so it didn't really matter. Discussion sections were also easy; just show up and do the groups.
Absolutely amazing lecturer, he is so engaging and entertaining. You do have to show up to the lectures but they are enjoyable anyways so it's not a problem at all. Provides information that is actually useful later on in the class. The projects aren't difficult or time consuming but you do have to put in an effort to get a good grade in them.
Excellent professor. A fun and charismatic man with great teaching abilities. Only complaint is the slides, which hold very little information, so pay attention to what he says during lecture. Lectures are not mandatory but highly recommended if you want to pass.
Great professor, does not post lectures or notes online though so you really should go to class. He makes lectures funny and relatable so they go by quick. Very few assignments so not much work at all. Exams are a bit more difficult than you'd expect but not awful
Even if lectures for COMM-1000 are required, Professor Stifano makes them legitimately engaging and entertaining. Plus all the exams are online, multiple choice, and open-note, so this is a pretty low-stress course to take.
Professor Stifano is an exciting teacher in the classroom. He makes the lectures engaging and he's usually animated, which motivates me to go to class. You'd need to go to the lecture to get better notes cause the slides posted have like no info. There's a textbook we need, but I never actually read it for the exams and I was fine.
Super easy class. Lectures are very interesting and there are PowerPoints posted online but the PowerPoints don't have much info on them so I do recommend going to lecture. He does offer 1 extra credit assignment and exams are all online and open-note. Exams are low-key a little tough but overall great prof. No actual final exam during finals week
I cannot say enough good things about Prof Stifano. He is so nice and animated that I actually enjoyed going to his lectures every week. Grade is based on 3 online multiple choice exams, a few assignments which aren't hard, and discussion, which you only have to attend 8 out of 12 to get full credit. I highly recommend taking his classes.
Great lecturer, definitely not an easy A class. The TA's grade very, very harshly. There are some assignments that are easy and exams are open-note, but hard. You have to go to lecture even though the powerpoints are posted because they are not helpful.
The lectures are essential to doing well in class because he will lecture on topics that aren't on the slides and sometimes those things are on the exams. Honestly, it's totally worth going to class and the discussion classes because they make both very engaging.
This class is far too difficult for a simple and easy gen-ed if you want one where you can coast. It is a 1000-level course and they make it unnecessarily difficult to do well on assignments and exams if you do not attend every single lecture. If you are looking for a content area 2 class, I recommend ANTH 1000 or SLHS 1150.
I was worried about my grade the entire semester until the extra credit was posted. If your TA is sucky, your grade is sucky. If you get Kelly, LEAVE THAT DISCUSSION ASAP. I don't fw Kelly. The assignments were insanely stupid and vague but if it wasn't what Kelly wanted it was wrong. Try to get the guy TA. The exams were OK, I never studied.
Professor Stifano is great. His lectures are fun and entertaining, and if you take notes on the key terms in the textbook on top of taking general notes in class you'll do really well on exams. However, this is NOT an easy A class. His TAs grade EXTREMELY harshly and give terrible feedback on the few assignments graded. Study the rubric to a T.
Love this man. He's a great lecturer and he is able to connect with his students well. The course is very straight foward and I feel like the content is very applicable to your own life.
As long as you take good notes and show up to lectures, you won't have any trouble with the exams. To do well on the projects, just pay attention to the rubrics. This class is not hard if you pay attention to these things.
Professor Stifano is easily my favorite professor that I've had at UConn so far and is respected by all of his students. Attendance for lectures isn't mandatory but I rarely miss it because he's so entertaining. His exams are all open book, web, and note, and his grading system is how I wish all professors graded. 10/10 professor for sure!
Professor Stifano was one of the best professors I've had at UConn. He is a motivated lecturer and makes discussions fun and entertaining. Definitely easy to finish with an A if you go to class and pay attention. Make sure you go to discussion
He is really funny and outgoing. He makes the lectures as entertaining as a lecture could be. It is a fairly easy class, and exams are all online, no lockdown browser. Definitely would say you need to attend the lecture to understand the material, but easy to get by if you miss class.
Great class and even better professor. COMM 1000 was easily my favorite class and Dr. Stifano is an amazing lecturer. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory but definitely recommended, and discussion attendance is mandatory. Tests were not too bad and assignments were pretty simple with ample time to complete them.
Professor Stifano made lectures engaging and funny. Attendance is not mandatory but heavily recommended, as the slides he posts are not enough to understand the material. Discussion activities were also entertaining. Overall easy class, but graded on very few things.
God forbid you get sick in this class with mono, the flu, anything. If you are unable to do an assignment no matter what your reason is. You could be dealing with a mental health crisis. He will not open the assignment back up. You will get a zero. So stay healthy and make sure you have no issues going on in your life!
Would not take this class as a first semester freshman, Even though it was an amazing course, the grading system can often be confusing and it doesn't leave much room for human error, especially if you are a freshman just learning the ropes. there is no final exam so it is very difficult to get our grade up if you make mistakes.
Stephen is great but he doesn't leave a lot of room for error- the grading system is weird and he expects everyone to be on top of everything perfectly, which isn't always the case. He doesn't really let you make mistakes, there's not a lot of leeway in the class. But besides that his class is interesting and he is a really good professor and guy.
Granted his slides w/o context is impossible to learn from, but his lectures makes it easy to go to class. He is very strict with due dates but the assignments are nit hard so I didn't complain. His grading is hard to follow but it makes sense if you use the course grade template he has. Just be careful since the TA's grade everything...
I would go to a Stifano lecture if I wasn't in the class. He explains everything in detail and is extremely entertaining. If you read the syllabus and interpret the instructions literally in the assignments, you will get an A.
TAKE THIS PROF!!! He is amazing!! I actually wanted to attend class because he was super entertaining and made class understandable. There are some assignments and exams are question heavy, but they were open note. 1000/10 recommend
Dr. Stifano delivers amazing lectures to his students, and truly has a passion for his students. He is very kind and always in a good mood -- and makes lecture fun. However, you have to come to lecture to learn the material because he makes very vague presentations. This class is a pretty good gen ed, and has open book exams.
Professor Stifano is amazing he is one of the first professors that I ever had and I loved him I enjoyed going to his lectures. There is a textbook for the class but it's optional I don't use it and still did well. He loves to engage with the student's only thing I didn't like was one project but it was more tedious than hard.
The best lecturer at UCONN by far. He is such a good speaker and such a funny professor. you do need to take diligent notes in lecture and study those for the exams.
It's a shame the TA's play such hardball in this class because he's an amazing lecturer, but the HW gets scrutinized to all hell just so this class isn't an easy A I guess. I still got one but would never wanna retake with those stingy mf graders. Can't go back on previously answered questions on exams, some are quizlet-able but others not so much.
Great lectures I actually like going to them even though you prolly don't need to, funny and relatable dude. A few tests throughout the year that are open note and then a few assignments the TA grades. I've got a great TA tho I've heard some aren't so good.
Lectures are non-mandatory. Online open book, note, and internet exams. Discussion is mandatory, useless, and easy. Great and interesting lectures. Funny guy
Comm was a great class. Stifano is clearly an exceptional professor. Tests are tedious, depending on your TA you may have annoying rubric. Lectures not mandatory, easy to raise your grade.
Dr. Stifano has many emotions and will teach the lecture like a talk show. Get ready for a fun semester and to learn a lot. Realize that the TA will make or break the class because the TA does the grading and for the written assignments, the TA may grade extremely hard without clear expectations. Open note exams make up for other assignments.
Most engaging instructor I've ever had. Take. His. Class.
Bestie Steve!! Most engaging instructor I've ever had. Seriously go to as many of his lectures as you can. Super great guy and great class.
Lecture is not mandatory but I would recommend going because if you take notes the tests are pretty straightforward and they are entertaining! Discussion is mandatory for 9 out of 12 discussions, you don't do too much though so its not even bad. For homework, TA's can kind of be tough graders not gonna lie. But overall, this class isn't bad, easy A
Everyone agrees that Stifano is one of the best professors at Uconn. As long as you show up for class to take notes and attend discussion sessions, you will get an A. He is an amazing lecturer, always entertaining. And mainly his TA's are super chill, I had Meredith and she was the best TA I've ever had.
I had an issue contacting Stifano directly so I emailed my Ta that I was not going to be present as I was stuck out of state. My Ta then proceeds to comply with my needs till it was halted by Stifano the same day of the exam. he did not let me fix my grade and It seemed like he had no genuine care for my situation and kept shutting me down rudely.
There's a reason why Stifano is so highly rated, he is a great lecturer. But he is very rigid with grading/exams; I had a flight scheduled during the exact time frame of an exam and I was told I was SOL, so I had to spend $15 on wifi to take it in the air. If you do not miss exam times you'll be fine, if you miss them he will not accommodate you.
I'm a COMM major who transferred from CC and had to retake this course because the one I took did not count, but I am glad I took it with Dr. Stifano. He is one of the best lecturers I've had, he is so engaging and you learn a lot from him. There is a textbook but you only need it if you miss lectures. Show up and do the work and you will pass!
Prof Stifano was by far my favorite professor. I absolutely loved his class. He is gravitating and makes his lectures incredibly captivating. Wednesdays would be my hard day, but knowing I would have his class in the middle of the day got me out of bed in the morning. I would 100% recommend taking his class, and any that he has in the future.
Stifano is UConn's best professor. He's funny and super engaging with the class. He made his lectures so interesting that I never once touched my phone. He makes learning so much fun and I highly recommend taking this even if you don't have an interest in comm just to have him as a prof. I only wish that the lectures were longer than 50 minutes
My favorite professor at UConn so far. His lectures are genuinely so engaging. However, I think his exams were harder than expected because a lot of the questions are in the "pick the best answer" style and multiple answers would make sense. You only need to attend 9 discussions, and the assignments are easy, just tedious.
Professor Stifano is amazing! He's super energetic and passionate. In the beginning of comm 1000 he said he recommended to get the textbook, I bought it but used it once. Most of the stuff in the textbook is already said in lectures so I def say don't spend your money, trust. Lectures were so fun, no heavy work. 3-4 Assignments, 1 group, 3 exams
Did his class in the 16 day winter intersession, personally would say it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. Graded on very few things, 3 tests and 3 assignments. Would not recommend but wouldn't discourage either. It was a meh kind of class. But it is a very manageable class for a 16 day course.
Stifano is great professor. However, the only thing I can say about this class though is that as a junior, this has to be the most boring/busy work class I've ever had. I know some people like this class, and if so, good for you, but it's hard to get the motivation to do these mind numbingly useless assignments.
All three exams are open notes. Lectures are not mandatory but I think were helpful. A lot of your grade will depend on the TA you have, so try and pick a good one if you can.
Extremely easy class. Graded by 5 assignments, 3 exams (online), research participation (can get extra credit), and discussion participation (9/12 graded). Very easy content. However, the assignments and discussion seem so mundane and like busy work. TA's are the ones that grade everything.
He was engaging and very clear. Super easy class, 3 exams and a handful of assignments. Extra credit offered in the form of completing research studies. Some TAs can grade harshly, but mine was great. Everything is straightforward and super easy to get an A. Take this class.
Prof. Stifano makes this class engaging with his energetic lectures. While the assignments can feel like busy work, the content is manageable. Using unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook helped me prep for the exams. Overall, an easy A if you stay on top of things.
I took COMM 1000 over the summer and it was super fast-paced and he was a tough grader for assignments (which was unexpected for this being a 1000-level, summer course, and that were hard to impossible to read (and would not change after I pointed out).
He's a great professor, however the class is no longer an easy A.. He made all exams in-person, closed note and on scantron this semester. They used to be open note and all online.
Don't take this class for an easy A. People cheated on exams so he made them closed note in person halfway through the semester. Material isn't HARD but can get confusing during exams. Doesn't help that the TA's grade assignments super harsh. Good student work often gets a B and very rarely you'll get an A on an assignment, if you get one at all.
Terrible professor, Change the syllabus during the semester, that's unfair. Have three different types of exam, jesus...
He is a good and engaging lecturer but is way too tough on grading and policies for a 1000-level course.
I never thought I'd write this, but I'm fed up with this class. The professor is nice and makes lectures engaging, but the Comm 1000 department is a mess. We've had three exams, each with a different format, and no guidance on any of them. Assignments appear randomly with no notice, the TAs grade harshly, and communication is lacking. DONT TAKE IT.
This class is a joke. Used to be easy but good luck now... get ready for harsh grading for just a 1000 level course, unexpected formats of tests and TA's not telling you when anything is ever due! Would not recommend this class to anyone, cant wait to be done with it
Different formats for each of the 3 exams, structure is a mess. Closed note exams that are content heavy and no outline on what to study on. Course is miserable do not take.
Wow worst professor ever. Never take
This professor is far by one of the worse here at the University of Connecticut. On the first day of classes, he said all exams would be open book, open note. Since some kids allegedly "cheated", he decided to make all exams close book, in person. The dudes ego is huge, and the university should consider firing this guy for this childish behavior.
Very harsh grading from the TA's. A LOT of work for a 1000 level course. He was very boring to say the least and hard to pay attention.
Try to take it with someone else lmao
It sucked that the exams were moved in mid semester. Stifano does have a huge ego and thinks this is the greatest course of all time. However, I do believe he is a really good lecturer, they are interesting. I had Laura as my TA. She was great, a little harsh on grading but she gave us weekly updates about the class. It is what it is
Terrible professor. Fired!
Terrible professor with a huge ego, along with a group of TA's that grades insanely harshly and refuse to give back points. After first exam, he thought people were cheating & changed the tests to in person, scantron with the questions on the screen and no time to give an answer. He was laughing at students while administering the exam. COMM 1100>>
The exam format changed 3 times, but the exams themselves were never that difficult. If you study & pay attention, you are fine, it was mostly common sense stuff too. My biggest annoyance was the TA's-they grade very harshly and my discussion was online which was SO unhelpful and a disadvantage compared to the in person discussions. Easy A overall.
He has a huge ego and the difficulty level is unnecessarily high. It seems like he truly enjoys watching students struggle. During exam 2, he changed the format without informing students in advance, making it even harder. His behavior is unprofessional and his approach to teaching questionable. I strongly advise against taking his class...
This class was way too complicated for a 1000 level course for no reason. He was a tough grader, you have to do research studies and group projects. My TA was very nice but overall the exams were the hardest part. I wouldn't take this class with this professor but if you want to do it make sure you take lots of notes and get a good TA.
So egotistical. Changed the syllabus/test format 3 times throughout the semester. Exams started online open book, and he changed to in-person closed book after the first exam. Made the testing period EXTREMELY stressful, and enjoyed watching students struggle in a 1000 class. Coursework isn't impossible I just can't stand him as a person.
Wow. I've never had a professor who is so egotistical. At the beginning of the year, we were told exams would be open book/note and he changed it to closed book in person the second exam due to students allegedly cheating. Yes, closed book exams are part of college, but the way he went about it was disrespectful and made students incredibly anxious
It used to b 3 open book exams, but after the first 1, Dr. Stifano changed the syllabus and made them closed book. He didn't use student feedback and had a blaming attitude. This was hard since he doesn't record lectures, making this class basically a social psych course. Meredith was an amazing TA tho, and she made the course much better!
No longer an easy class. used to be open note online exams but stifano got mad his exam scores were too high and made them closed note and in person. He changed this format halfway through the semester after add/drop so we had no choice but to just go through it. does not round up your grade even if youre at a .99. Big ego needs to be humbled.
I saved this class for my senior year because I thought it would be an easy A, I was WRONG. I am a pre-med major and I have never seen a professor so unforgiving and disorganized. He changed exam format 3 times in one semester, one in which he flashed each question on the board for one minute for 300 students! Do not take COMM 1000 with him...Jeez
Dr. Stifano is the most unprofessional, disorganized, and truly uncaring professor who strives to see his students fail. He changed the exam format each time because he was upset how they were going and cheaters. All this does is cause the students that ARE trying to suffer unnecessarily. Do NOT take this class with Stifano. TA's are great though.
This was probably the worst semester to take COMM 1000 as the exam format changed for each time, with the last being a standard closed-book paper exam. Made a 10 minute apology video for the second exam... I agree he's egotistical. The exams are NOT difficult if you go to lecture and at least attempt to study. Laura was my TA and she was awesome!
Is he egotistical? Yes. Were the changes in formatting ridiculous? Yes. Still was a generally easy class as long as you actually showed up to in person lectures. Especially easy if you've taken psyc1100. Laura was a great TA!
Stephen Stifano, truly the worst. Changed the course mid-semester and then when everyone did horrible on the exam he blamed it on everyone (but himself). Refused to round my 89.5 to a 90… claims it was “unethical” for me to even ask (even after such a dysfunctional course). For a professor who teaches communications, he is horrible at communicating
He enjoyed seeing students struggle on the second exam. He couldn't handle the fact that generally, communication is an easy subject. Punished everybody for cheaters, when he should've been prepared for the likely usage of Chat. Bro has ego problems, made it seem like TAs also decided in changing the test format, when in reality, they didn't.
He's cool. Switched from online exams to in-person for the last two. If you study and take notes, you will be good. Exams were not hard in person, just study. He gave a 14-point curve for the second exam. Love him and Laura as the TA is the best. Get three skips for discussion sections. yay.
Lectures were clear and interesting, content was NOT hard, even after the exams were moved to in-person. Lots of angry people below didn't mention the huge curve he gave the second exam and the chance to replace it with the third exam score.. Not a bad course, and a good lecturer.
This man cares so much about communication. Even if you don't care about it at all he will make you care. The class is super easy but my discussion TA was horrible. Tests are so hard for no reason. He is a hilarious man and talented lecturer but likes to sit on his comm high horse.
originally exams were online open notes, but students used AI and finished in like 13 mins with a 100 so he flipped and made exams in person. He massively overreacted and screwed everyone on the second exam, I studied alot and still wouldn't have done well if it weren't for the curve he added. He later apologized and listened to student feedback.
despite the weird overaction on the second exam, he's overall a really good lecturer and teaches interesting material. the final exam was partially cumulative and super easy just study. my TA Laura was awesome and def show up to discussion its fun.
Ok this was the worst semester to take this class by far. Exam format changed each time. I'll repeat what someone else said. This turned into a social psych class and many people I know got low assignment grades. TA sherry graded very harshly and gave little to no feedback. Lectures were very good, but get a good TA if you can help it.
Stifano is a really good professor, but the way he went about students cheating on his exams was extremely unprofessional. The course content isn't that difficult to learn but some of the exam questions can be tricky. I loved my TA Jana but she graded harshly on assignments. Easy to get an A as long as you study and do the research studies.
Way too hard for a 1000 level course. I have a better grade in organic chemistry than I do in this course. The switch from online to in person in the middle of the semester was unnecessary. This class is basically just memorization so you have to study really hard just to memorize these random terms that you'll never see again in life.
Worst sem. to take COMM1000; exam format was different each time... all exams are in-person now. He's an amazing lecturer and very funny, but has a massive ego. Slides are posted online, but you'll do better if you actually show up. 4 assignments, 3 exams, + research studies make the grades: will NOT round up. Jana was my TA and she was awesome!
If you don't need to take this class, don't. Randomly switched from online, open-note exams to closed note in person in the middle of the sem. My TA Jana was amazing. Only have to go to 9/12 discussions. I should have ended with an easy A but didn't because of the drastic switch in exam formats. Take advantage of the extra credit research opps!
Class was lecture heavy. A lot of content but wasn't difficult as long as you're at the lectures you'll do fine. Some writing assignments graded by TAs but they're usually nice with grading. Exams are in person now and not a lot of curveballs on them it's just lecture content. Textbook isn't mandatory and professor makes lecture engaging.
Truly one of the worst professors at UConn. Mid-semester, he changed the exam format from open-note to in-person with no warning of the exam format, blindsiding everyone. As a result, I went from an A to a B, missing the Dean's List. Poor communication and lack of consideration for students made this class incredibly frustrating. Avoid at ALL COSTS
The lack of communication in this class made it difficult to trust the professor. It's one thing for a course to have challenging content, but it's another when the professor doesn't give students the tools they need to succeed. If you're someone who values transparency and consistency in grading, I would STRONGLY suggest avoiding this professor...
Even though the exam format changed midway, he was very fair about it (generous curve, option to replace grade, etc). As long as you take detailed notes during lectures and know how to apply terms to case studies/memorize the definitions you will have no problem at all. Those who are complaining probably only studied briefly the night before exams.
Last semester, Stifano botched the entire class/exam format and the class was much harder than previous years. I believe that they changed the format of the class now and it's more reasonable, so I'm pretty sure the class is fine now, but who knows. I really enjoyed his lectures, though, he really puts in effort and gets you thinking in a good way.
Enjoyed the class, but thought it would be easier than it was based on original syllabus. After first quiz, the format was completely changed for tests/quizzes. They became much harder and stressful, as it became a gameshow style with scantrons. I did love my teaching assistant, Meredith Turner, and would not have done as well as I did without her.
Professor Stifano is not the professor I thought he'd be. I've heard good things, but my hopes were crushed this semester in COMM 1000. He is a tough grader, and will take off tons of points for the dumbest things. He purposely makes exams hard, he wants u to fail or not receive a good grade. Good luck to future COMM 1000 students.
If you do bad on the exams, prepare to not do well. Each exam is closed book with lockdown browser & monitor, weighted 25%. Course weighting is unforgiving, and it is hard to gain sufficient extra credit.
COMM 1000 with Stifano is an absolute joke and nightmare. Exams have little to do with lecture material / discussions with TA. Two exams are worth 50% of the course grade. Do the research credits because this is as unforgiving of a course as it gets.
Absolutely not take this class. Exams are much harder than they should be for a 1000 class. Funnily enough, I'm doing better in my 4000+ STEM classes than this.
This course was disappointing. Exams are weighted heavily, use lockdown browser with monitor, and are much harder than they should be for a 1000-level class. Do not take this class with Stifano.
2 exams, pretty easy. Lots of other points to be had just for doing the work. He's a great lecturer and is super into the topic, which makes it easy to pay attention.
Good class, easy gen ed
Listen, it's an intro gen ed.He's a good teacher, has videos explaining every assignment, and seems to care. Worth taking.
He is super nice and engaged in the class. There are 2 exam that are VERY difficult for a 1000 level class. Do the extra because it will save you. Other than that the professor is wonderful, but 3 assignments and 2 exams plus extra credit is all you are really graded on. Assignments are graded pretty harsh so make sure you put a lot of effort in
He's a nice guy and a really good speaker. His exams were a bit difficult but manageable
The class was structured really badly + the exams were very information heavy and so many restrictions. My TA was no help either. However, there's many chances for extra credit and Stifano gave everyone 20+ points at the end of my semester too. However, he is a very good public speaker which I aspire to be like. Very entertaining and passionate.
stifano is an amazing teacher this class was SO interesting to me! attending lectures is definitely needed in order to pass, as the slides posted contain very little info. most of the work is done during your discussion section, from what i've heard all the TAs grade similarly. also make sure to watch the video lectures before the exams!
Dr. Stifano is an amazing prof who is passionate about the topic. Lectures are fun and engaging. 2 exams that are majority of grade, but both very easy and one-sided cheat sheet allowed. Discussion had a quiz and participation grade. There are a lot of ways to get your grade up with research credits. 1 group project. Highly recommend!
Very nice professor. I made the mistake of skipping one too many discussions and missing a few research studies. If you avoid my mistakes, you will get an A. He is a very caring professor. Exams are out of class, online with monitor.
Professor Stifano is a very engaging lecturer and makes going to class pretty entertaining. He also allows a one-sided cheat sheet for each exam and lets students earn extra credit by participating in research studies. The only inconvenient thing was that the online exams were only open from 8am to 4pm on a day normal class was not scheduled.
Wouldn't recommend taking this class. There are several other gen ed 1000 level classes that are much easier to take and too much time gets invested into studying exams when you should study for other classes that are far more important.
Super SUPER nice, kind, caring professor. You don't have to go to class, but showing up definitely makes a difference. You can tell he loves what he teaches.
Class super EZ! take if you need Gen Ed
Super fun and interesting class, and he is very caring about his students and his lectures. You get a cheat sheet on the exams, which are only two (midterm and final), and they are both online. Can easily get extra credit and free points if you complete your assignments and do your research credits. Class is graded out of 1000 points.
Great job being interactive during lectures, really enjoyed this class and would definitely take a class taught by him again! It was a perfect mix of taking notes but not too much and doing projects and interactive things in discussions too! His exams were reasonable and I really recommend!
Great. Awesome, funny and very good at explaining. Just talks fast so be ready.
His lectures are very engaging and he is clearly passionate about COMM and is very knowledgeable. There is almost no homework except for watching a weekly video or 2. However, there is a weekly response quiz of sort that will ask you to explain a COMM topic from the lecture/ videos for the week. You get a cheat sheet for the midterm and final.
Lectures are important, as the weekly "participation" is a mini-quiz on topics discussed both in the in-person lecture and in the online videos. There are very few assignments (3 projects, 2 exams, discussion participation, and the mini-quizzes from above). Overall, if you listen to the lectures and online videos, this class should be no problem.
Incredible lectures, very entertaining but not too quick. I was able to take notes by hand fairly easily, but its important to pay attention because the provided slideshows will sometimes be very minimal. Exams are 40 mulitple choice questions, with 3 small multimedia assignments throughout the semester. All around, great class!
There are plenty of people saying that COMM 1000 is easy but it is extremely difficult. The exams really make the course hard. The professor doesn't give a study guide and the slides are very vague so personally for me it was hard to study for the exams. Plus there is way too much material for just two exams!
Passionate, knowledgeable, and articulate. Note slides are vague so the lectures and online videos are important and very helpful. Overall, coursework is fairly light and intuitive.
Great professor all around. I personally did not like the projects too much, but everything is graded fairly, and the expectations are clear. Not an "easy" A, but definitely a class worth taking.
Lectures are important but so entertaining so the time really does go by. Be sure to take good notes as weekly participation are mini-quizzes based on the content. Slideshows are posted but what he says is also very important. There's 3 assignments, 2 exams (40 multiple-choice questions), and you need 80 hours of research (it isn't hard at all).
