Awesome guy...Philosophy is sometimes very difficult to understand and the text doesn't help much, but he really does a good job of explaining the material in class and his test aren't from the book. Cool class, cool teacher.
If u like to be called on every single day then this is the prof. to take. Hes obsessed with calling on students and having them basically teach and read from the book. At first he was alright, but then he does downhill. This is his first year here and he needs to leave!
He is a real good teacher you just have to pay attention. He is very willing to help you with anything you need. He will even make time on the weekends if thats what you need to help you understand.

He was a nice guy but it was very confusing and his tests were extremely hard. He also made you write 3 essays that weren't graded was very frustrating
Terrible teacher! Who ever said he was easy is a fool! 25 questions per test, 3 test and final. He liked to talk and made sure everyone was listening, good thing I look like I'm listening when I sleep sitting up...
The class is interesting. Overall it isn't really hard as long as you take good notes. He is really open to helping if you don't understand somthing.
I love Steve Sullivan. I would take any class he taught
This prof. never ceases to amaze me... he’s too intelligent, and believe me if you work at it, you will do great in his classes. Not an easy A, makes you earn your grade by getting you to actually read & learn material. Needs to dumb lectures down a bit, he doesn’t mean to be complicated
no help and no feel compassion for disabled students
Very intelligent person. Structured debates were cool, but difficult class as we spent more time on ethical theories than actual moral issues. 25 harder-than-avg. MC on three tests and essay final. Took it to fill core req.
not helpful
Clear understanding of course can be understood through lectures, however tests do not reveal student knowledge gained.

class is very boring and hard to understand. Teaches about things that are relevent... but very hard to concentrate when you are sleeping... Wouldn't recommend taking the class... tests are absolutely impossible... but the curve is awesome.
i'm not into philosophy, but dr. sullivan is still interesting, very enthusiastic. if you have to to philos. enroll in one of his courses. A very nice man; that bit about not "caring about the disabled" is untrue. i'm physically impaired and have no issues with him. The person below must have unresolved problems and such.
Really nice guy. The class is interesting and the tests aren't hard if you study well. He tells you everything thats going to be on the test beforehand. Make sure to read over the hand outs before the test too.
The class is kinda boring. Def have to come to every class. The tests are really hard but there is a curve!! Never any hmwrk. I would prlly take a class from again. He offers many extra credit assignments.
He's a cool guy. Super excited about Ethics. His tests can be pretty hard but I hear actually reading the handouts helps. He will make appointments with you before every test if you'd like to go over the material. I think that's pretty neat.
Dr. Sullivan is a very kind and passionate professor. His class takes a little adjusting, but pay attention more to concepts than details. He's pretty funny. He really makes you think. Don't focus too much on the handouts, and make sure to spell everything out even if it seems silly. He wants to know you get it. Don't overlook the simple answers.
Very analytic (though at times claims not to be) and rigorous with written course work. Lectures from a mixture of textbook & handouts/personal publications. Tests are from lecture material--moderately difficult--MC+TF+essay. Take advantage of Dr. Sullivan's office hours--quite willing to work with students that show interest in subject matter.
He was an alright teacher. His class was boring but he tried to make it interesting. I didn't like his class because I don't like philosophy and I had to take it for my major. As long as you take good notes and listen to what he is talking about in his lectures then you should scrape by just fine.
If you're willing to work, you will love his classes. The tests can be pretty insane, and he's very picky about grammar and punctuation in your papers. You'll learn a lot, but expect to give a lot to earn an A!
One of my fav professors. Tests are tough, not impossible. When in doubt, talk to him: he WILL work w/ you. Speak up too! It makes the class more lively for everyone and helps you grasp concepts. He is very balanced & helps you understand different sides of an argument. His insight was fascinating & helped me explore my own ideals! Deep stuff!
Hard tests but gets the information across. very enjoyable cl****
I luv Dr. Sullivan. It was his class that made me take up phil as a minor. He is very smart and has respect 4 every1 opinion even if he didnt agree. I learned a lot from him in that class. He also goes above and beyond and he's helped me w/ things that he didnt have 2 help me w/. If I were u I'd take a class or 2 from him.
Very nice professor. I had him for Beginning Logic, so naturally a hard subject and he did a great job instructing it. Tests are hard, so make sure you study. Homework is graded for completeness, not correctness. Very fun class. Very fun professor. Has his views, as do all professors.
HE IS COOL.
Pay attention, do the work and read what he assigns and you'll be fine. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, so make use of them, they can easily get you to an A on your lowest test grade. Besides that, he's a really great teacher and he tries to make classes enjoyable for everybody, including people who aren't interested in Philosophy.
Great class, great teacher, would take him again.
an awesome professor, i would take him 50 morre times. he is funny, down to earth, cool, respectful, honest, and totally hilarious. i highly recommend him one of the best professors on this campus!
He cares about his students. He's smart. He's a good person!
really hard class but still kinda fun. tests are crazy hard.
Class lecture mostly from book and handouts. tests are pretty hard, multiple choice wortha LOT of points each. Very willing to work with you if you need help. Has some fun extra credit stuff.
he is an amazing teacher! he lectures everyday, but he use many examples to make theories easier to understand
Dr. Sullivan is an amazing teacher! This man knows what he is talking about. He gives many extra credit opportunities as well. He is very funny too! Also the key element i think is that he stays neutral on the issues that are discussed in class. He gives many strong points on both sides of the argument.
Great professor. He is very passionate about his subjects. Read the book, do the work and y ou'll make it out just fine. He understands if you have to miss excess days due to personal matters, just talk to him.
One of the best teachers at Edinboro. Very passionate about what he teaches and goes above and beyond to make sure you have all you need to pass the course and understand the material. Great guy in and out of class, openminded and funny. Good speaker. A man of awesome intellectual range. He will sharpen your brain.
He gives extra credit for getting a chili pepper on rate my professors. (Joking!) but he is totally cool, he gets all of the cool points. He is a wonderful teacher.
Awesome professor! Very funny sense of humor. Great teaching technique. Very considerate of others' opinions in class. He keeps in real. Some test questions are a bit confusing but are doable.
Dr. Sullivan is a great instructor. He teaches clearly and really does a good job of highlighting the important material he covers in class. He teaches mainly from his collection of notes that he makes available online to the class. Some of the test questions can really make you second-guess, but you'll do fine if you study & learn the material.
Interesting class...tests are short but tricky...Very knowledgeable professor w/ sense of humor...numerous extra credit opportunities!
Interesting class...tests are short but tricky...Very knowledgeable professor w/ sense of humor...numerous extra credit opportunities!
Morals/Ethics class, hard to digest stuff IMO, but he makes it seem not so hard. MC test are tough, read them VERY carefully. EC out the wazoo, so you can come back if you bomb a test.Don't sleep or text in class and don't let your cell go off audibly! Not real crazy about the "debates" I didn't see the pt. Great professor!
Dr. S. is amazing! Take his classes, do your work, and you'll never be sorry!
Makes class interesting, tests are MC there really simple if you read his handouts!! and he gives a ton of opportunities for extra credit!
He's a philosopher so if you can deal with the convulated language of thinking about morality in your head versus actual putting it in practice, this is the prof for you. A disconnect between theory and practicality, unfortunate for fairly typical for a philosopher.
Absolutely excellent professor- smart, compassionate, enthusiastic- I couldn't recommend him more.
He's a very knowlegeable guy. Great with a wide variety of students, including OSD students. Don't be afraid to partake in class discussion. Tests can be rough, but he will curve the test if the class average is low. Many extra credit options. I learned a lot from his class.
MoL- Sullivan is the best teacher I've had so far. His syllabus includes a schedule of each class day that he doesn't often deter from. Much extra credit, makes everything interesting and clear. Edinboro should keep him instead of one of the other two Philosophy people.
Excellent professor! This is the 2nd class I've had with him. He is incredibly knowledable on the topic, the course was right out of the book required for the class. I was having personal problems, and after explaining my situation he allowed me extra days to miss and made sure I kept up on the work. He is always there for his students.
"Oh no, he calls on me in class" why are you in college? This is an Ivy League educated man. Anyone can learn a lot from him.
SUCH A NICE PROFESSOR! He helps you and answers emails promptly. There are "3 god forsaken 25 multiple choice tests" which are hard to get A's on... Very knowledgeable about subject. There are required debates and room for some extra credit. Lots of available handouts on the e-reserves.
Very cool man. A lot to learn from. His tests are ones that you do need to study for. I never did and got a C on all of them. So if you pay attention you can pass but study for sure. Makes his subject very interesting when it could be dry. Very helpful. Honestly a very nice man, you can learn a lot.
He's very friendly and understanding, and his jokes are hilarious because they're so bad. His syllabus is very clear, though his expectations for assignments can be a little vague. He likes to split hairs over syntax and semantics in ways that seem unreasonable sometimes, which is frustrating. You have to apply yourself.
Nice guy but tests are impossible.
Dr. Sullivan is a great professor. I highly recommend taking him. Although his tests are a bit difficult, his class is very interesting. He cares about his students and will give extra credit multiple times throughout the semester. I have taken two courses taught by him because he is easy to understand.
Dr Sullivan is one of the most qualified profs I've had at edinboro, but his approach in the classroom is off-putting and even abrasive. he always calls out specific students in the class for not laughing at his quirky banter. that being said, he is helpful and emails back quickly. I would only take him again if I had to.
Tough tests
Dr. Sullivan is a soft spoken man who truly loves Philosophy. I did not enjoy the class because of the topic & difficulty, but from what I hear, Dr. S is probably the best philosophy prof on campus. Tests are very hard. Long papers. Stand in front of class debates. I am a Christian, he is Athiest. (he tells the class) He was decently considerate ^
Great professor that delves into the depths of religious ambiguity.
Great professor that cares about students
Very knowledgeable, insightful man. Incorporates philosophy into his English classes and focuses on critical thinking. Extremely interesting lectures and subjects covered in class. 10/10 would recommend.
He is very scatterbrained. He often jumps from topic to topic. Although the tags i chose were harsh.. I must say he does care about his students, and wants to see you succeed. He gives writing assignments almost every night. His exams are large questions answered in essay format. Rough grader, would not take again.
Great professor who is passionate about what he teaches. Tough test and essay grader, but many opportunities for extra credit. He genuinely cares and his lectures are informative, interesting, and thorough.
Rude. God-complex. Is one of the least liked professors at Edinboro. So glad this class is over.
Entertaining most days
Great professor, always willing to help, and gives great feedback. I would definitely take another of his classes, and highly recommend him. He makes fun of his own jokes, but they usually made me smile anyhow. Never dull moment!
Sullivan is a decent professor, definitely not the best. Really nice and likes to joke, but gets mad easily if the class doesn't participate. Lectures can be a little boring. Take lots of notes and you'll do fine on exams. No textbook, but lots of online reading. A lot of short assignments. Don't think I'd take him again unless I had to.
Did not pick this but was mandatory for my major. I have never felt more disrespected than I did during this class. Asked what everyone's religious views were and he would use it against you. I was very open about being a christian and he called me out in front of the class and would talk down to me about my choice. Thought he knew everything.
Although I do think I learned a thing or 2 from Dr. Sullivan, I would not choose to take his class again. His lectures are very scattered because he gets off topic very easily. Lots of short papers that are nice for the extra points.
Very rude and expresses his liberal minded views to class. Will call you out in class for unnecessary reasons. Not a nice person and his jokes are horrible.
Despite what the course is called, this is really a politics and critical thinking class. Over halfway through the semester we finally work on an actual research paper. My biggest problem is that there is a lot of information he doesnt record anywhere, whether it be in notes or on the board, that he exepects you to memorize.
Dr. Sullivan is awesome, he gives clear instructions, and makes you laugh at least once a class. Class discussions happen often and everyone's opinions are respected.
He is a tough grader and could work with the student better. He has got to realize we have other classes. Give us a break.
Expressed his liberal opinions, but allows you to debate and have open floor discussions. Open minded. He was very nice, had him twice, and allows for extra credit often, like his costume contests. He doesn't record notes, so WRITE!!! Graded attendance sucks. Kinda socially awkward and says "um" a lot but one of my all time favorites.
I've only had him for about 2 weeks for Mortality, Faith, Meaning of Life, but he's a gem. He does do heavy topics, and he does talk about different religions. He does hold 3 debates in class and has you do at least one, you can do a second one f or moderate or extra credit. he is liberal but he doesn't judge you on your views. fully recommend him
I had Dr. Sulliven over the summer of '21 and the class was ok. It was a lot of work for that condensed period of time but it fulfilled a GenEd so I could take another class I wanted to down the road. Just make sure you read the book as the tests are almost straight from it.
Dr. Sullivan isn't a professor you want to take if you want an easy A. He grades reasonably stricter than most professors however even though he did, he gave clear instructions, gave great and thorough feedback on grades, and provided very useful study guides for tests. Overall one of the best professors that actually teach their course.
He is nice, sometimes passive-aggressive. He is a very harsh grader. Do not expect an A in his class even if you feel you did your best work.
If you are new to philosophy I suggest Sullivan's class. Most of his classes had jokes, surveys, and unrelated conversations (typically brought on by a student's question). You have ample opportunities for extra credit. If you miss a class the lecture for that day is online. Most of your work is reading responses (average 4 pages to read).
I truly enjoyed this professor as he was very in deph and would often engage with students in lectures. He make quite a few jokes, but I found them funny, and assigned a LOT of readings. While the work wasn't difficult by any means, there is a bit of it, so stay on top of responses. A stellar teacher who cares about his students and material
I loved this class so much. He made you think in a good way and let you speak your mind about pretty much anything and everything.
Although his jokes tend to fall flat with most people, I think he's hilarious. He's also probably the best professor I've had so far. He gives great feedback, and grades things quickly too. His lectures are always enjoyable too, as there's always something interesting to be talked about. Definitely taking more classes with him if I can.
He grades too harsh and he barely teaches in his class.
Dr. Sullivan's class is very easy. I took it Fall of 2022. There are many fun and interesting opportunities for extra credit, but they can only go on to the lowest test score. You will do short readings for every class along with a reading reaction; you will either get full credit right away, or you can redo it to get full credit.
I feel like he deserves a better rating, he is willing to help and explain things thoroughly. If you have health issues, he's very understanding. I never had an assignment I didn't understand in his class. Great English professor, and one of the best. He has a lot of Dad jokes but I find them hilarious, give him a chance!
I've only been a student for a semester, but Dr. Sullivan has continued to be such an understanding and caring professor. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. He goes out of his way to individually help. Besides that, he knows what he's talking about and is insanely smart. Lots of options for extra credit. 10/10
Dr. Sullivan is a very sweet, understanding and caring professor. He is funny and tries to make his lectures fun. It is a bit hard to have fun because of the critical thinking content but he does a good job. He has a tendency to trail off talking about subjects, but it is really enjoyable. I do recommend him, he's a great teacher and person.
Took his PHIL101 class, really easy to pass as long as you do the homework assignments, but they can be kind of a pain in the ass because it's writing responses for REALLY old passages that can be kind of hard to decipher. Otherwise, Dr. Sullivan is nice enough and is a pretty easy grader.
Intro to Phil. Wasn't a fan at first, but got to like him during the course. He gives you what you need for the tests, and offers extra credit. Exams were hard at first until you learn how to study for his class. He also allows you to redo assignments if they aren't right at first. Overall, a decent course to take.
Once I got used to his exams, grading style and lectures, I really enjoyed his class. He is virtuous and kind individual as well as very intelligent. Make time to meet with him as this shows you're interested in learning and that you care about what he's teaching. Wish I had the chance to take another class with him!
(intro to ethics) Great teacher, take any class of his that you can if you need it. Very kind, witty, and intelligent. Work is reasonable and isn't time consuming. Tells you exactly what will be on the test, and what to use to study for them.
Professor Sullivan's class is engaging and rewarding. His lectures are always interesting, and he's happy to discuss topics in-depth. unstuck ai was a great study tool alongside the readings. Definitely take another class with him if you can.
