Boring and self indulgent.
Hard marker, but the course is for majors in poli sci.
talks more about himself than the course....full of himself in the biggest way
No Comments
I learned more about this family and dogs than I did about the course material. He should have done a Phd. on himself! That, he's an expert on.
I don't care about his mother or his kids, or the situation with his insurance. Stay on topic!!! He is completely boring, and inaudible despite his mic. Disregard his course outline. He'll be nowhere near where he is supposed to be come exam time.
I did not hear too much about his family, dog, bike, etc... He did talk about that stuff but not alot. I think he is a victim of the students making things worse than they are. Very helpful to the students! Most helpful currently in the department.
He gives you the basics in the lectures and lets you work from there. His daily stories about his dogs, his insurance, and kayaking only make him deliciously entertaining. If you enjoy the spectacle of pure self-absorbtion, you will enjoy Stephen Tomblin.
Loves to talk about his personal situation. Very vain; tight t-shirts and flexes his biceps in class? Needless to say, he is somewhat odd. As for lectures and material he is ok.
Loves to drop names; Jim, Doug, Doreen etc. Talks about himself a lot. Nice guy but very dull.
He helps you put together the "toolbox" of political science. Get him, he'll take you to the shire - totally Lord of The Rings South Steve.
He is NOT hot, he needs to stop wearing tight t-shirts and get with this century.
makes an already boring subject even more boring. If heard more stories about him this term than about the course content. Very unhelpful when it comes to papers...not talking about the paper at all. AC/DC shirt with a suit?a new wardrobe is needed
He rambles a lot and goes off tangent. But you can easily do well in this course without really learning anything in it.
Absent for most of the term on two trips, provided inadequate substitutes. Notes provided in library in bad shape/out of order. When in class talked of other projects/family more then class material. Easy to do well without learning anything though.
Though he tends to go off track a bit...at least he gives you the questions that will appear on exams.
He likes to talk. At least I think he does, I never got a chance to ask. Repeats himself a lot, and the notes are not great. His stories are sometimes lame, and not relevant to the class material. He does a good job of giving both sides of an argument.
Boring, absolutely boring. Wished I had waited to take the course this semester with another professor. Consistant Marker. Notes Useless.
great guy and interesting lecturer
Funny, engaging, and easy to learn from. One of the best profs around. Really know his stuff and cares about making sure students learn about poli sci and how to apply concepts
Excellent prof! Knows his stuff.. Does go off track a bit, but.. Gives questions to exams.. what more could you ask for?? I would recommend him to anyone taking this course!!!!
No notes, all student presentations. It's a good thing he gave us the questions or I would have failed.
blah. useless course. going to the class is a complete waste of time, but then again the book is just as useless... i'm still confused on how i managed a 75 even though i have no idea what we even covered in the course. ???
Absolutely awful. Very boring prof. Does not cover the material in the book at all. Going to his class is useless. Required a 3000 word research paper for this course with very little direction. As a first year student, felt overwhelmed. AVOID.
Wonderful professor, easy going, cares about students and knows his subject area. What more could you ask for. Highly recommend
Really enjoy his class. Very well informed and easy to get along with. Knew that he had a great reputation and did lots of research, but he seems to care alot about his students and tries to make politics fun. Hard to do sometimes but like the approach
Always interesting...
I didn't learn anything! Went to all the classes and I learnt more about his dogs and family life than I did about Canadian politics. I should have taken in by distance.
I dont care if he knows stephen harper or how many times he's been to Hawaii. I would have liked to learn something useful, which I didn't.
One of the best courses I have ever taken or ever will. He is engaging, high energy and the university is lucky to have him on staff.
I really get a lot from Dr. Tomblin's classes, he has very high standards but knows what is required to excell. Lots of students go to school just to get a job and pay little attention about the point of framing issues and carrying out research. I like the application of theory in his courses, and he does so in a way that is fun, and does not see
From my experience, Tomblin expects alot and he demands high quality. He expects his students not only to understand concepts but how to apply them in practice. For students who want to learn it is a great chance to work with someone who does research. If you are looking for a free ride, this is not the best choice for you. But he cares.
Entertaining and full of energy, knows his stuff, and works on your behalf as a student. Nice guy and a real jewel. Best on campus.
I think is a the best professor on campus, and cares a great deal about what you learn, and how you apply it. Not an egghead, regular guy, but with all the skills necessary to keep you entertained. Really liked his class
Very engaging, popular, and relevant. Think he is the best Professor on campus, first-rate.
This guys did nothing but talk about himself. I'm sorry I thought it was a class on federalism, not on his awards, his famous friends, his success and not to mention his workout music. No one cares if he listens to metallica! He was a waste of time.
Just a wonderful communicator, knows his area in great depth. Best around and would highly recommend.
It was nice having a class where you learned alot but never felt pressured. It was enjoyable, engaging and very social experience. What academia should be. He is fab and a personable guy.
Tomblin is one of a kind, engaging, brings in his audience, knows how to educate and inspire. I found his class first-rate, and he did much to motivate me and take pride in my work. A great asset for Memorial and the province
This guy is very hot and funny too. A bright light and great scholar that adapts well to all students. Not an egghead, but he does expect you to work. Would highly recommend for any student interested in political science or health policy.
This was the best experience I have ever had at university. Great talent and communicator, funny, engaging, relevant. Learned key concepts and theories but never felt bored or pressured. A great course to take.
Wasn't a fan. I found his class kinda boring...But it was a morning class, so maybe that was my problem..I thought he went a little off topic a lot..For instance the talks about his dogs and his jogging adventures..Yeah..Wasn't my favourite prof, but I wouldnt discourage anyone who wanted to take his class, he is a nice guy.
Think he is the most effective professor in the dept and Memorial Great sense of humour and wonderful insights too. My experiences were great and learned alot
Very nice guy, well prepared, and great wit. Thoroughly enjoyed his class, a wonderful prof.
One of the best professors around, funny, engaging, great sense of humour, wonderful wit. Students have lots of fun and are encouraged to respect each other. Not a slack course by any means, you work hard, but get clear positive outcomes
Excellent communicator, and you learn by engaging, and sharing knowledge and experience. Has a great approach to learning which allows you to use your skills and experiences. Emphasis is placed on helping each to advice and learn together. He is the best there is on campus.
Pros: Very nice guy, knows his stuff well, Gives exam questions, average marker Cons: classes were extremely boring, spent the first month of class talking about what we were going to do in the course rather than giving notes, seemed to talk about the same stuff all year long and gave notes that didn't apply to the exams, least favorite course
The hippy inside is dying to come out. I love his Bob Marley shirts, how he sits relaxed to teach the class, I feel comfortable and eager to learn about politics. He's fun, him and Amanda Bittner are my favorite political science profs so far. Get them both if you can!!
Incredibly smart guy. He knows his stuff. My only complaints are that he tends to ramble on about things and it's hard to get a solid answer out of him. Generally what he wants on midterms and exams is clear though, so what more do you need?
Don't be fooled by the easiness rating! easy to get a decent mark (I got 80%) with very little work or study except for the essay, but even the best students have a lot of trouble getting high 80s. But besides that he is a huge rambler as everyone says and attending class is a WASTE of time. KILL THE ESSAY - it's 40% - you will need the boost!
Tomblin is the best professor in the department and university. Always engaging, and draws students into great discussions. Excellent background as a researcher helps him to clarify issues and offer insights. My favourite prof of all time. Love his humour and gentle ways.
Great professor and very concerned about the progress of his students. While he talks alot about research and the need for theory, he makes political science understandable, even fun. Always concerned about his students and their feelings and outcomes. He is the best Memorial has and think everyone should have a go at one class
tomblin is a very dynamic scholar and he does a fabulous job engaging his student and promoting group learning. It is a great course, lots of great discussions, but informed by key concepts and theories. He is one of the best professors in Canada and we are lucky to have him.
obviously BRILLIANT, knows his stuff inside out. i feel like he would be better suited to teaching higher level courses than 2000, writing a paper knowing he was grading it was really intimidating. tends to ramble but it adds to his character, i find him hilarious in a weird way. would take another course with him at a higher level!
Good prof, it's just that he's quite the rambler. He's very lenient though, and his exam wasn't too hard. Seems like he doesn't want anybody to fail his course, haha.
Found he covered a lot of material but very effective in using stories, case-studies, and humour to generate new insights. The exams reflected the work we covered and I liked the research paper topics. Would take another course from the instructor and think he is one of the best at Memorial.
Tomblin is an outstanding communicator and he keeps his audiences by applying key concepts and picking interesting case-studes and comparative narratives. There is much opportunity for discussion, constructing knowledge together and finding ways to simplify complex problems.
I don't understand the great comments on here about him. If you like being stuck up your profs butt hole to get a good grade, he's the prof for you. If you don't want to sit and listen to a prof brag about junk you could care less about for 2 hours a week then pass on him. Wish I had those few hours of my life back. And he's old, not hot.
Very bad lecturer, and very disorganized.
He rambles a bit and sometimes does the same lecture twice, but he's not too hard a marker if you do your work. For the exam (do 2 of 4 essays) he told us what the 4 questions were and the key points he wanted for all of them. then you just had to do the reading to know the specifics. plus he's pretty cute.
Best professor on campus and a nice guy too. He makes academic study fun but in a way that makes you a better student. While you need to do all the readings in order to understand the concepts and theories, he provides a very good setting for interactive learning
In my view, Tomblin is the best professor that Memorial has and treats his students with great respect. He is fun-loving, insightful, but makes sure that each student has an opportunity to advance their skills and knowledge. He makes work fun and is very inspiring.
These words are used too often, but this is warranted... the guy is a blithering idiot. Lectures are ridiculously disorganized, the class was a complete waste of time. You might do well, because I don't think he reads half the papers which are submitted to him. Slides are a joke. Avoid this guy, classes are unbearable.. even in subjects of interest
From my perspective, Tomblin did an outstanding job engaging the students, sharing knowledge, and working through key concepts and theories that are relevant to methods of political science. The discussions were crisp, funny at times, and very relevant. He is one of the best professors around.
Have been very impressed with Tomblin's interaction with students and knowledge of Canadian politics. He is very entertaining and an effective communicator. Think he is a super professor.
Tomblin is a great communicator and keeps you awake and entertained. Really enjoy going to his classes and learning so much about Canadian politics in a way that is fun. Great prof and talented guy
Really enjoyed Tomblin's approach to political science and the way he interacts with his audience. He is funny, and never fails to amuse or make you think about the political game. My favourite prof.
Have enjoyed learning about Canadian politics from someone who relates well to students and understands what his audience needs. Tomblin is easy to listen to and really knows how to keep your attention while teaching you new insights. Wonderful prof.
Write a paper on whatever you like. Ensure to add key course terms and concepts, including drivers and constraints. Winners and losers. Remember regionalism is a "slippery concept" which strongly ties into province building and modernization. Add a little WAC Bennett and some Bob Marley and you'll get an A.
Smart man. But he tends to talk about the same concepts over and over. Sometimes the class is boring, sometimes I find it interesting. He basically told us what was going to be on the exam which was helpful and he really does want you to do well. Not sure if I'd take his class again though.
I am a international student and very pleased with the quality of instruction provided by Tomblin. He is a very nice man, very helpful, insightful and cares about your progress and state of mind. He is a wonderful professor.
Who's writing these positive reviews? First feedback we received was on our way out of the exam, course requirements were unclear, lectures extremely unorganized, terrible at communicating concepts, term paper and exam questions difficult to answer because of the lack of introduction to course topics. Nice man, awful course.
v Agree
Slightly above average. Nothing special. Read the textbook, and u will know what is expected of you in class. Proper essay writing format is expected. Use facts to back up opinion. Attend Class, and dont bother with his books. Not a bad professor. An Easy 70 Percent or 3.00 (B) GPA for first years. Take it, BIRD Course. But u have to work though.
From my viewpoint, Tomblin did an outstanding job with a large seminar group. He not only accomplished all his objectives, but he provided students with new critical insights. He is by far the best in the department and we are lucky to have him.
Really enjoyed Tomblin's class and greatly appreciate both his humour and insights. He has much enthusiasm and really cares about his students. But he is not only a nice guy, he is the best professor around.
Was very enthusiastic about learning about political science and found Professor Tomblin to be an excellent communicator and made poli sci fun. He is one of the best profs at Memorial.
Tomblin is a very productive scholar but he is fun to be around, good sense of humour, and seems to understand his students. I was always entertained but he gave me much confidence and made the subject fun.
Tomblin is so enthusiastic and easy to listen to, no matter what the subject. He cares about his students and is a very nice guy, but he does have high standards. My favourite prof of all time.
From my point of view, Tomblin is a fabulous professor and is very well organized. If you do the reading and come to class prepared, it is great listening to his insights and narrative. Outstanding communicator and cares about your progress.
Nice guy. But the class was really hard to follow. He rambles a lot.
Have found his lectures to be very well organized and insightful. If you do the reading and come prepared for class you will do well and he is a very good lecturer. One of the best in the dept
I have found Tomblin to be an excellent prof, and easy to follow. He is brilliant and knows his stuff but he is also a great communicator. Really nice guy who cares about his students, funny too.
Have really enjoyed Professor Tomblin's class, the way he presents materials, tries to engage student, and the positive energy he provides you. He cares about your progress and is full of insight.
I have throughly enjoyed Professor Tomblin's class. He has been very engaging and offers insights on public policy but in a way that makes you think alot. Nice guy and cares alot about his students.
Have always enjoy Professor Tomblin's classes and think he cares a lot about your progress. Much focus placed on concepts, etc., but he does a good job helping you learn about key approaches used. I like his humour and gentle ways.
It has been a great experience learning about public policy trends from someone who is so knowledge but also keen about your progress in learning new things. Find the approach to public policy very useful and I think he is a wonderful prof.
Tomblin is a relaxed, and fun-loving prof, and his classes are easy-going and even fun. He is not the kind of prof who is concerned with structure, he is more concerned making sure you have an opportunity to learn key concepts, but in a way that seems natural, like a walk in the park. Love that approach and he is wonderful.
It has been a rough year but Professor Tomblin has been excellent. He is a nice guy and knows his stuff. His class is very relaxed but he knows his stuff too. He is engaging but in a way that is not intimidating. It makes for a great experience.
Professor Tomblin was a great prof, always there when you needed him, and he met all my expectations. The course material was difficult at times, but with work it was very manageable. He provides much help and guidance. My favourite in the department and I would highly recommend
I was not sure about whether public policy was something that interested me but found Tomblin's class a great review. He clearly knows his stuff and I really enjoyed the class. Would highly recommend to any students.
Tomblin is a great professor, he expects you to do the work but is very fair and easy going. One of my favourite profs of all time.
Tomblin is one of my fav profs, he makes political science fun but you also learn alot from his approach. Be sure to read ahead because he gives great examples. Would highly recommend
Tomblin was pretty decent. No real complaints. I did well in this course, though I did work hard. His lecturing is not what you would call linear; however the days where he's on he is really on and you can learn a lot from this man. I recommend reading some of his work from the early-mid 90s. Great stuff.
I didnt attend Tomblins class much, but when I did I found his lectures to be a bit incomprehensible. That said he is helpful, offering to proof read papers and tells you the questions on the final exam. While his expectations were unclear a times, he is understanding and will do what he can for a student you needs help.
Love this prof; great lecturer, actually has a personality and knows his stuff. Brings personal flavour to a very dry field.
Great prof! Cares about his students and has great knowledge in his field. Can't ask for a better prof to teach this course!
Literally picks grades out of the sky. Convinced he didn't read the term papers as students who handed it in got similar grades as those who didn't. Avoid.
Very nice man and helpful when he wants to be, it's very hard to get hold of him when you need too as he doesnt answer emails and is rarely in his office. Not clear on expectations for essay or exam. Tends to ramble about irrelevant things and its sometimes hard to follow. Unsure of his grading system, it doesnt seem like he reads the essays.
I have a hard time believing these positive reviews are legit. Tomblin is by far the worst poli sci prof I've ever had; his lectures are nothing but rambles, and I don't believe he even reads the essays he grades. I didn't find him to be a hard marker, for what that's worth. Honestly wondering if he wrote some of these reviews himself!
Think Tomblin is an awesome professor, and have enjoyed attending his class. Nice guy and he clearly knows his stuff. Would recommend.
Really enjoyed his class, very knowledgeable prof and engaging. One of my favourites
I have taken 3 courses with Tomblin and this was by far my favourite. There was only about 10 of us in the class and he took the time to get to know us. He is repetitive in lectures, but a very fair marker. Compared to other 4XXX POSC courses, this was a breeze.
Learned a lot from this prof. He really knows his stuff and communicates well
I have yet to meet one student in person who didn't think this was the worst prof they ever had, yet there are a ton of great reviews here. I find that... suspicious. Worst lecturer I've ever sat through, is not interested in helping students, and I'm pretty sure he picks grades out of a hat.
This man has an impressive skill of talking for your full hour and a half class, but saying nothing. This was the way he was explained to me and did I ever find out they weren't kidding.
Have enjoyed the classes very much, knows his material, presented well, and would recommend to anyone with an interest in policy.
It has been a great experience learning about regionalism in Canada with Tomblin. He knows a great deal about the topic and forces you to think about how unique Canada is. One of my favourite profs.
Smartest guy I have ever met. Prefers to discuss things that reflect his interests, even if it has nothing to do with the course material (fracking, healthcare reform, etc.). However, he does tell interesting stories and is very great to talk to. I would take a course with him again.
His lectures were interesting but I can count on one hand the amount of lectures that actually seemed relevant to the course. I felt like I taught myself by the slides and the book.
very educated guy but if you can I would recommend getting him for the 50min slot. I have him for the 75min slot and thats just too long. The lectures consist of him standing in front of the room and talking about things that arent related to posc. He tells you whats gonna be on the midterm and gives you lots of options for the research paper tho
Best professor in the Political Science Faculty!!!! Very easy yet fair marker and always has time for a chat. His amazing, real world experiences make for some very interesting stories during lectures.
His lectures had little to do with the course material. He would talk about whatever interested him. Self-taught myself through the book and slideshows.
