HE IS AWSOME!! I totally dont get psych stats but because of Volz I am finally getting it! He is great breaks everything down the right way! Very approachable, very helpful!
Hes a good dude. Knows his stuff, helpful and has a sense of humor. Most psych lab TA's are grad students preoccupied with their own work, but Stephen is helpful and willing to help.
He's a great T.A. I had him for stats and he's much easier to understand than the course professor. If I could take his class again, I would.
Stephen is fantastic. He knows his stuff so well and he gives over the info very well. Any questions you have, whether its on stats or on anything else in psych, he will have the right answer for you. Hes a grad student whos very down to earth. Was my lab teacher for stats. couple of homeworks and quizes. teaches you SPSS well. highly recommended.
Amazing guy and amazing teacher. not bad to look at either =]
Volz is great. Aside from being a really cool guy he is also extremely helpful in understanding a difficult subject. He really clears everything up and unconfuses you. I have him as a TA, and then found out he would be teaching the semester after. Suffice to say I am jealous of the next semester students. TAKE HIM!
This guy knows his stuff, is willing to help, and can always make the most difficult concept make sense. If you want him to help with a hw answer, make sure you have an answer already, & just tell him you think it's wrong but you're not sure why. He hates when students ask straight-out for an answer. And he reads these reviews out in class. Hi! :)
This is the professor you want for psych.stats.Stephen is truly a great professor.I highly recommend him because he explains the subject well and really helps students and cares. He is a very smart guy who can make psych. stats perfectly do-able and dare I say evena bit fun.
This is the prof you want for psych. HANDS DOWN.
He makes statistics so easy to understand, TAKE HIM!
Good professor! Curves when deserved. Cheat sheet allowed for exams. All quizzes are extra credit. Exams are very fair. Study groups are helpful. Homeworks are helpful. He's laid back--ask questions in class. If you need help outside of class, go to his office...he doesn't respond to emails.
Stephen is cool, brings Stats to a level that you can understand with real world examples, I always had word for word quotes in my notebook from things he had said that helped me understand difficult concepts. Best teacher to take for Stats if you can!!
Volz really cares about his students and the material in a way few educators do anymore. He takes the time to make sure everyone thoroughly understands and has the patience of a saint. Take him if you can, you're sure to learn a lot.
He is one of the most unforgettable professors on my list, in a good way! He applies what you're learning into the real world to make the subject more understandable and interesting. If you can take him, take him! He makes Statistical Methods in Psychological Research fun! Homework helps! So don't get behind on that. But overall, he's awesome! :)
he is very cool and fun. makes the class interesting. homework every week and surprise quizzes here and there. but he curves and spends time to review before the exam.
Excellent lecturer, can truly elucidate the material. That said, he gives plenty of homework and his tests aren't very easy, but can be done well if good notes and studying are performed. Likes to help students, down to earth guy. Expect to do work in his class but learn something useful
Loads of sharp sarcasm, a pessimistic Socrates, takes getting used to, but I'll take that over a boring class. Good-enough natured humor, not a jerk. Paint on jean, 12 a mohawk, funny hanging belt type. Easy-ish tests, submit notes for 1st exam use, 2nd test take home, 3rd open book. No homework. The class joke was "email him" cause gemuda triange.
The Bermuda Triangle called his mailbox is true. The office hours are a rumor, but the man is real. Do the homework, come to class for the extra credit quizzes, participate, and eat ice cream during your break. Ice cream makes everything better. Especially soft served vanilla on a cone. Study bc he is tired by the end of the day and makes errors.
Great lecturer, group projects, lots of reading, lots of writing, gives extra credit.
Prof. Volz is a very intelligent man. I've learned SO much. Even though I felt like banging my head against the computer at the sight of some of the work, he does a great job teaching. He's quite a character: comedic, ice-cream loving, professor who is down to earth and real with you. Also has a great taste in underground comics. Can't go wrong!
Hes a GREAT professor & I recommend him 100%. I would honestly take him again. Come to class & pay attention. He gives pop quizzes for points (another reason to come). At first, it was odd because he didn't use ppts, however, he saves your college career (undergrad and grad) by reminding you how imperative note taking is. Worth it for psych majors.
Easyish A for A students, don't need perfect recall thanks to notes being allowed on tests though no study guide and fill in the blanksshort essays. Class was engaging, works in the field he teaches, so you're getting relevant current info beyond the book, theory debates, refining definitions. The Bermuda inbox was annoying, catch him in class!
The class was interesting and the professor allowed for students to write up chapter notes weekly on the assigned chapter, and he collected these chapter notes and later during the exam he handed them back for you to use to your advantage, that was nice of him. 3 required essays as a midterm, and one optional essay if grade needs to be boosted up
The subject is hard, but this professor makes it tolerable with good lecture, great sarcasm and many opportunities to improve your grade. I would take him again in a heartbeat. Just work hard, participate in class and don't miss a beat, because only dedication and hard work will get you through with a decent grade. Has an great T-shirt collection
Amazing professor!!! Very clear and knowledgable! Expect homework, which is usually harder than the test. I was terrified of STATS before I took his class. He made it fun to learn statistic! Would take him again!
An amazing and hilarious professor. You can write chapter notes and he hands them back to you during exam to use. Curves tests. 2 tests and a final. I was never bored. VERY knowledgeable. Tests are not easy but if you study (don't cram) you will get an A
His tests are hard. He lets us make cheat sheets, says they are due one day and then last minute switches the due date. The cheat sheets are used for tests so he holds onto them until the test day. He is careless, he forgot to bring them on the day of the tests. He is also not technically a professor.
I had him for 2 classes. Stats 3400(B) and comparative psychology(A+). He's hilarious and is a really chill guy . He's also very honest and wont sugar coat things. I did surprising well, he seemed like a hard grader to me. His tests are fair. he deff uses the textbook so make sure you get it.
I think it's hilarious to read a review that uses undergrad psych skills to try to psychoanalyze Volz. He is genuinely the best professor I've ever had. Out of 60-ish students in his class, a bunch couldn't handle the material--it's stats--no surprise. Anyone who hates on this guy, do so because stats is hard, and it feels better to blame the prof.
Second class with Volz, the guy knows his stuff very well, fields all sorts of questions from abstract to minute with grace and humor and is generally all around one of the best professors I have ever had. Only negative is that he doesn't teach more advanced psyc courses, would take any and all of them. Oh, and the material was very interesting.
awesome professor! If you actually want to learn how statistics is applied to the real world, he's your guy! He really breaks down the information and cuts to the chase regarding what you need to know. I actually enjoyed taking Statistics. Would definitely recommend!
Volz is not a good professor for those students who are looking for straight forwardness. His tests are not what he usually describes them to be , the format differs from homework assignments . He expects students to know the material, as well as himself. He is not a very helpful professor. However Brian the lab teacher is extremely helpful.
With a STATS class there are two parts, lecture and lab. Volz was my lecture prof, he know what he's teaching. He's a bit fast but if you ask a question, or ask him to show it again he did so. He makes his own tests and HW questions which is good because he wants to make sure you know the material. I learned more in his lecture class then lab class
awesome, funny and very helpful. He will always answer your questions but you have to pay attention in class and make sure to do the homework in order to do well for the exam.
Love his teaching style. I also took Learning and Behavior with him. He is super funny and sarcastic. Makes tough material understandable. By far the best prof I've had at Brooklyn College.
Attendance isn't mandatory but you will be lost if you don't show up to lectures. The class is TOUGH but Volz makes it interesting and understandable. He is a great professor and I highly recommend him. His exams are multiple choice this semester and he offers extra credit pop quizzes. Take good notes, you'll need them for the final (cumulative)
He is an amazing professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he picks a random day to do a quiz which is super easy. Some of his quizes are to just write your name lol. His tests are difficult so you gotta study hard in order to do good in this class. Plus H.W is very important! (30%) of the grade.
Great guy. Hilarious but really gets through the material with you. You'll know stats and have a good time through it. Significant extra credit and big curve. Always there to help and maintains an open door policy for whatever you need forever. Everything you need for an easy semester. Don't miss the opportunity to be in his class.
He is an entertaining professor that knows what he is teaching. You must work hard, read and not fall behind. Test are extremely difficult if you dont spend a lot of time studying
One of the best professors i have taken. Makes the material enjoyable but you will still have the study hard as the class is hard. You should definitely take his class
He is an AMAZING professor. Knows his stuff really well and knows how to teach. Super clear, and funny. Prepares you for future classes. Highly recommend.
This professor test are difficult even though they are multiple choice, sometimes. The class is oriented around Statistical research, not the theories and definition. (Stats)
Great class. Fun atmosphere while getting deep understanding of the foundations and development of learning theory. Very scientifically inclined class. Best part was the instructor. Has a great way of explaining the material and gives significant extra credit.
Great teacher
Incredibly funny, makes the topic relatable to everyday life, is engaging with the class and is always open to discussions. Is straight-up and honest with students regarding grades and exceptions. However, he doesn't provide Power point slides or handouts which is a bit welcomed / needed for a subject as difficult as Statistics.
Professor Volz is the best Professor in Brooklyn College. Stats is a difficult and sometimes tedious topic, but Volz has the distinct ability to clarify complex topics. He allows you to have notes on tests, which is helpful. His tests are kinda hard, but not impossible. He is also hilarious, take him you won't regret it.
Tests are hard even when its open book. Going to class by itself isn't helpful. Takes forever to grade exams & hw sometimes. Homework could be hard and confusing. He is a good professor but with a tough subject you need someone to break it down to you and help you understand.
OK so this professor has a lot of knowledge in stats, but the way he teaches it is very confusing. He does not use slides, he speaks a lot and when he writes on the board it's very messy and hard to read. His tests are 50 qs and no one ever finishes on time. The class average on tests is a 75, doesn't he see there's something wrong in his teaching?
Really good professor! You will not regret taking him. He keeps his lectures really interesting and you will laugh a lot in his class because he's hilarious. The weekly homeworks are long but they prepare you well for the exams. I highly recommend him form psych stats.
This class was the most fun I've ever had with math. Prof Volz is an awesome guy. He explained stats in a way that made it really clear and easy to understand. He lets you have your notes on the exams and is willing to give extra credit if you need it. I really loved his class and I would recomend it to everyone!
Professor Volz is AMAZING. seriously there are no words. He loves to teach and doesnt care much about actual grades. Hell teach what the class is interested in. Hes seriously the best professor. TAKE TAKE TAKE thats all I have to say!
He is a darkly humorous character. It was important to read and take notes on the book to do well on tests and homework, which were theory-heavy and open-notes. He missed a couple classes this summer, making the lectures even more condensed and requiring a lot of motivation to do stuff outside of class. Having a strong TA would have helped
Volz is an phenomenal professor. The class itself is incredibly difficult, but he makes it as easy as possible. Attendance isn't mandatory in terms of being incorporated into the grading criteria but if you don't go to class, you'll be missing out on a lot of useful information. Study hard, take good notes to use on exams, and ask him for help!
Really nice and funny Professor, the class is hard so everyone should pay attention, but he tries to explain things as much as he can explain them. Attendance isn't mandatory but I would show up because if you want to pass the class you won't be able to pass without showing up. The class is fair and we have open book exams and quizzes which is fair
He is so hilarious. We all crack up every class. He explains everything very well and wants everyone to understand the material. Gives great examples too.
He's very knowledgeable in the field and I can see why people like him, but he couldn't care less about how much we learn. He's very disorganized and lazy. Half the class failed the test and he didn't even spend 2 minutes talking about it. He also spends a bunch of the class time talking about his research and not lecture on stuff that we need!!
Take if you like psychology, but explained in the form of stand-up comedy that is both observational and anecdotal. This man's humor is a gift to the world. Make sure to read the textbook to pass as tests may be difficult.
He makes the lectures very entertaining and hilarious. Open note test, available during office hours and overall a great teacher. The down side: no slides to follow, very little time to take test. I knew the material very well but flunked first test due to not having time to calculate problems. Class average: 67. Do you homework and lab will help.
He takes forever to grade tests ....
Homework is a large chunk of your grade but it is explicitly covered in lab. Lab and lecture work well together to cover every single topic. All of the content on the test was covered in lecture extensively, so if you study the test will be very simple. He does offer extra credit and often adds points to everyone's grade. Pay attention and do hw!!!
Statistics isn't the easiest subject, but professor Volz definitely makes the class fun and explains everything thoroughly. He is hilarious and always willing to help and answer questions. I highly recommend him.
Professor Volz is hands down one of my favorite professors so far. He is HILARIOUS, his sense of humor keeps you engaged and interested in what he got to say, yes even statistics material. He's organized and is fair with grading, you need work it's not an easy A class. I plan to take him again when I get the chance, take him you won't regret it!!
Really good stats professor. Makes his students laugh and takes his time to explain concepts. You can always email him for extra help. There are weekly hw assignments but they are relevant to what he's teaching. When classes went online he switched to asynchronous courses. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you skip one day, you miss a lot.
Super insightful and knowledgable teacher. Whatever he has to say will always be enlightening
Psyc should not be this difficult. The lectures never completely support the test. If you are not a Psyc major you may want to skip it. Most of the students fail the test and he has said, he'd be suspicious of you getting a 100. Why? That to me is a red flag. Unnecessarily difficult.
Do all the extra credit and hope he applies it. Tests are not done properly. If you have more than half the class failing and your highest grades are in the 70s you need to curve, and he doesnt. You dont need to be one of the elites to pass this class. You just need a professor who wants to see you succeed. Deemed best Professor?! No way.
Professor Stephen Volz is by far the best Professor I've had. He keeps the class engaged and will go over the material until you understand it. He offers extra credit as well. He has a great sense of humor which helps you relax and not be so nervous in class. Take this Professor. You will not regret it.
The best professor, has an amazing ability to explain the most difficult material using real life examples.
Exams are too hard and the time isn't enough. His grading is only based on midterm and final. I DO NOT recommend taking him.
By far the best professor I have taken. Funny.. engaging... interesting, highly recommend.
Great professor for statistics and great personality. Uses real life examples and current events to teach a topic in statistics. This makes the lectures very engaging. Homework is harder than the exams only because Volz wants you to think deeply about the subject. However, the exams are easier and straightforward. Take Volz, you won't regret it.
This professor is one of my favorites in BC. He's hilarious, has a great grasp of the material, and overall, is caring and wants you to succeed in this course. He really tries his best to make sure everyone is engaged in Statistics; he literally wants people to participate or else he'll get bored himself. A true pleasure of a human being.
I took Professor Volz during the winter intersession (2022). Lecture attendance not mandatory, 4 hours every day M-TH. Lab portion attendance was mandatory and 3 more hours. 11 HWs about 20-30 questions each, 2 exams, and then one final. Lectures/labs recorded. EC on final, he adds points to final avg. Went from low 90 to high 90s. Take his class!!
Great professor, take him immediately! Took him during winter class and his class was so chill, he give random breaks in between and made stats seems fun and easy to do, he answers to homework questions and gives feedback to any of the materials that's confusing. Best thing, he gives extra credit! Just gotta love this guy ! take him!!!!!
Prof Volz gives you EVERYTHING you need to pass the class. Do your HW, read the textbook, use your brain, & you will pass the class. HW prepares you for the exams!!! He is straight to the point & shows how to solve every problem. I took him during the 3 week winter session & got an A in the class. Do not hesitate to take him!! Very good professor!
Professor Volz is such an incredible professor. The material is not easy, but he makes it accessible and sets you up for success. He has a no BS approach to the work and always answers all questions. Thoroughly enjoyed his course.
Honestly one of the better professors I ever had. I had taken 2 prior psych 3400 classes and had to drop both for other reasons but none were like Volz, He is eager to teach and makes learning extremely rewarding. This is not an easy A by any means but he is fair and curves when it matters. Homework once a week and 4 lab projects, but theyre useful
Such a special and memorable professor. If math is a scary subject for you, this is the guy you want on your side. This could have been an extremely tedious class in both lecture and content but he just has a way of making it approachable and maybe even a little enjoyable at times.
He's just the best Professor. He has the best teaching abilities, the best anecdotes and the best humor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he makes you want to come to class, with his sense of humor and ability to give over his knowledge of stats. He may seem rough around the edges, but he has a lot of smart things to say, besides about stats.
Volz is a fantastic professor, plus a really intelligent and fun guy. This review is more to warn that his learning class is HARD. His lectures are fantastic, he presents everything in a way that's easy to understand, really I have no complaints about him or his lectures. Just a heads up that his tests are pretty hard! Took me by surprise
good professor but if u need slides to learn he's not for you, tests look just like the homeworks
He's hilarious and it was always fun attending his lectures
Volz is a legend for a reason. I was scared to take stat as a humanities person and it was definitely a challenge, but Volz does a great job explaining it and laying out reasonable expectations. The course is hard but having Volz as your stat profressor is the BEST CASE SCENARIO! Do the homework, prepare for class, review and you'll succeed.
Professor Volz is very great at what he does. He gives amazing lectures and provides a clear understanding of stats. I enjoyed this class a lot.
Love this professor, have a really difficult time with stats and math in general but he is sooo smart and so funny, he makes going to class fun, he said he doesnt care if you come to the class or not just do the homework and com for the exams. He is so funny and entertaining. Love him def take him!!
Literally the best professor ever. I failed stats in high school but got an A in his class. He's super funny and will go out of his way to help you but he doesn't respond to emails so beware of that. Curved an exam and gave extra credit and lets you bring a cheat sheet for exams.
Take the Volzster
Statistics is always complicated but Volz makes it so worth it. Homework was pretty difficult but the exams were surprisingly easy to pass, and he will curve exam grades if necessary. Was willing to talk with me when I had concerns about grades/assignments. If I had to take statistics again, I would 100% take Volz over anyone. Amazing professor.
All of his other reviews love him because of his "relatability," but honestly, I didn't like him. He dumbed his lectures down way too much and the homeworks were easier if you read the textbook than went to the lecture. He would go off topic and tried to relate too much to the students, which is completely fine but just obnoxious sometimes.
really lovely professor, great lectures, beware of the hw as its pretty difficult but will prepare you for the exams. if you put in the effort, youll get a good grade
Lots of homework but really helpful when preparing for exams. Exams are honestly not bad, just don't fall behind on studying. He's a little bit much sometimes but so funny and he really cares about his students
Really fantastic professor. He's very funny, charismatic, and makes statistics easy to understand for those like me who have trouble with abstract concepts when it comes to numbers and arithmetic. Read the textbook in conjunction with his lectures and you will succeed. Only con is that his homework is really difficult but preps you for his exams.
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
5/5 person, 4.5 prof, 3.5 difficulty took his stats course online during summer (1 chapter/day. don't take stats it in summer unless youre ready to dream about the txtbook, it's intense) AND we were all brand new to Brightspace. definitely not smooth. took some persuasion to get him to be a little more lenient. ended up giving tons of extra credit.
The funniest professor I've ever had. Really knows his stuff. I feel like stats is generally hard, but I think he does very well in explaining it despite that. Genuinely cares and wants to prepare you with real skills rather than just pass you. Exams are fair; 3 exams and weekly HW (though he said he would stop giving HW due to student AI abuse)
I took this class because it is sub class for Calculs. Very thankful that I had Stephen. He is the best professor in BK College. 3 exams 20% each. Final is cumulative. 20% is unannounced quizzes. 20% is lab. about 13-14 labs, each 2 points. As long as you come to class, very easy class to pass. DONT USE AI for LAB OR LECTURE. PPL GOT CAUGHT.
