My hero and mentor. Not the easiest, but the best.

A great professor, made my freshman year at UK really memorable and gave some of the most interesting lectures and worthwhile advise.
Likes to curve, because he has to, if not everyone would fail. Fabulous lectures.

extremely smart man,you will read a tone if you take his class and you have to read to get a half way good grade

I thought this guy was a good teacher? Swing and a miss! I got some bad advice.
Do not take.
He was challenging but interesting. I learned more about US government and understand more about the political backround of this country.
You'll really enjoy his lectures. Thank God he curves the exams though...
Great teacher makes it very enjoyable yet all the while makes it applicable and interesting.
His lectures are interesting and clear. His tests are challenging, but they have a huge curve so don't worry too much! His class was one of the most enjoyable I've had.
Voss is a great teacher, very smart and is good at teaching. His tests are hard but if you go to class everyday and read a little of the required text its not all that hard at all. The reason why most people struggle is b/c they dont attend class and don't read. Do yourself a favor and take him.
Great Prof, tells you how it is and makes class fun
Great Prof, tells you how it is and makes class fun
Best class ever because of Voss.I had him for 101 and then 461 and both were the best classes the PS department has. He is an amazing professor and is very passionate, which motivates you to do well. If PS major, do not leave UK with out having him once. A challenging course but interesting.
Voss is a generally nice guy, and his test curve is on average 30 points. He helped to write the primary text book used in the class, so it can often be read in place of taking notes in class. I passed this course with a C and attended class probably less than 25% of the time.
awesome teacher. taught just as much about political science as how to perceive it
Trust me, just avoid these classes.

what a freak!!
Voss is the boss. He is the best prof in the poli sci dept. He will seduce you with his engaging lectures. Yeah you have to work hard but you learn alot. Voss rocks my face off period.
If your not a poli sci person you might want to go for someone easier but he's amazing. you HAVE to go to class EVERYTIME and he curves. Make sure your TA is good. That's really helpful. All and all Steve's awesome
Great professor! I would highly recommend this class. The lectures are very interesting and if you come to class, you will have no problem. Tests are lengthy, but if you are a good writer and able to express your ideas, it's not too hard to get a good grade--especially with his large curves.
Very hard, curves like hell. Go to lecture!
great prof, hard class, very willing to help.

A very energetic and astute professor, if not one of my favorites. He loves challenging the class' beliefs. The class requires a lot of work, but he really loves interacting with the students---like, a lot.
voss is the best teacher at uk, period. if you read and attend class, the tests are do-able. However, be prepared for a low grade initially, he will curve them later!
This guy is awful. Creepy. Stares at my chest during lecture. YUCK!
Been here 4 years & Best prof @ UK! He's so slick, he's so fantastic..don't worry bout "if you can get by without going to class." Go to class, be captivated, be entertained. He's like Bill Nye in the morning's for big kids with politics.
Class: Congressional & Presidential Elections. Dr. Voss is a great poly sci professor, knows what he is teaching, and expects his students to reciprocate his efforts. You will definitely need to read, show up for class, and participate to succeed.
The guys is a book nerd...never had a real job...a bunch of internships, part time work and a life time of books. Without universities, this guy wouldn't be qualified to pick up your garbage. I think he is also postin on his own site too!
Excellent professor if not the best professor i have. Teaches the subject on a very neutral standpoint which is rare among political scientists. he is informative and extremely knowledgeable.(P.H.D. from Harvard University) DO NOT EXPECT TO BE LAZY AND SKIP CLASS. YOU WILL PAY FOR IT DEARLY!!!
Best Professor at UK, hands down.
overall, he's a great teacher. youll take A LOT of notes and he assigns articals from the "Wallstreet Journal" to read. they ARE on his tests. his tests are HARD but he makes up for it. he determines letter grades based off the class average. attendance isnt mando but its in your BEST interest to go! funfact:he also looks like danny off full house!
Great Teacher.
tests are NO joke, but all of his content is on blackboard!
This teacher is awful. His tests are incredibly hard. He knows what he is talking about but expects way to much for exams. Do not take him.
Definitely not one of the easier 101 classes at UK... Dr. Voss is a tough professor. He knows his stuff, but expects too much out of his students and only takes 3 grades the whole semester. The grades are tests which get curved but are the hardest tests I've ever taken. Good luck, you'll need it!
He's a great professor. I loved this class, it was hard but not one of my harder classes I took this semester, so it is definitely doable, and if you go to class and read everything you will most likely get an A.
If you want to learn from a true scholar, take a class - any class - from Dr. Voss. He is a gentleman and one of the best lecturers around. Staggering knowledge of his material, and incredible ability to communicate historical and political events. Don't let your cell phone ring, and DON'T talk to your neighbor during a lecture.
Lengthy lectures everyday - your typical 101 class. Tests are extremely hard and he expects you to know A LOT of detail, despite him telling you otherwise. On top of it all, his TA's are extremely picky in their grading and seemingly take off points for no reason. Fortunately he curves HUGE at the end. Decent class, but not great.
He is a very smart man who knows what he is talking about. Three exams=three grades of the semester. Don't fret, he gives huge curves. An A is totally doable as long as you go to class and study a normal amount. Lectures entire class but is open to questions. Will call you out if you are talking. Good teacher. Exams are lengthy but fairly graded
This class was my very first college lecture and it was great. At first you might feel he's intimidating but actually he's just a really passionate professor. The tests are extremely hard but he curves massivly so dont fret about that. I would definitly recommend this class to anyone even remotly interested in government/history/law.
Dr. Voss is unbelievably knowledgeable about about the subject manner, as a Harvard Poly Sci Grad. should. His tests are ridiculously hard and are over immense amounts of material (including many wall street journal articles, which are on tests). Do NOT take his class!!! ...unless you want to work really freakin hard for an A. [3 exams+paper=grade]
Dr. Voss is one of the most amazing professors and individuals I have ever met! He is an amazing teacher! He does give very hard test but as long as you do the work and show up for class you should be just fine. He is the best professor I have ever had in my college experience! You should take his classes any chance you get!
Dr. Voss is a very smart professor, he knows a lot and expects students to work hard. There is a lot of reading and the exams are very challenging, but he curves heavily. He understands that we are students and we pay a lot for our education, he tries to give his students the best education for their money. He will make you think and work hard.
It's definitely a demanding class, but totally worth it if you're interested in government. Dr. Voss is really smart and interesting. I would definitely recommend this class!
this class is very overwhelimg. dr voss is an amazing teacher. the exams are extremely difficult but he curves. i got a 40% on the first test and it was considered a B. The text book helped me a lot so i would reccomend buying that. If youre looking for an easy A, dont take this class but its not impossible either.
Dr. Voss is the most intelligent and interesting professor that I have had to date. He is sometimes overwhelmingly informed and he expects incredible work from his students. If you want a class that will be ultimately very difficult but, worth the effort Dr. Voss is the best choice.
Dr. Voss expects a lot from you for a 101 class. Be prepared to take notes without a powerpoint. Some questions on the test are so detailed you would have had to read the textbook closely. I felt like I knew what I was doing on the tests and got a 39% on the first one. However, I ended up with an A and received a nice email from him.
By far my favorite professor in the political science department. Many others are radically liberal and it shows, not so with Dr. Voss. This class was very challenging, but he revelead after Exam 1 that he usually curves so that 75% of the class gets an A or B. His lectures are really interesting as well.
The best professor I have ever had. Makes the class interesting and keeps content relative to current events. He talks fast and expects people to figure out what is important. But, he is very good at answering questions and clarifying and confusion. His test are challenging and cover everything, but does not test on anything unfair
Dr. Voss is my favorite professor with the most interesting lectures. The class is challenging but the extra work is worth your while.
My favorite professor Ive ever had. He is so smart and keeps things so interesting. If you listen to his lectures and write everything down then you will succeed. Just try to stay interested if you normally do not like American govt.
The best professor I've ever taken. I'm definitely a politico, but Dr. Voss is one of the most intelligent professors at UK; the guy is a Harvard-alum political educator at its finest. Not an easy A, but take the class-- you'll be happy you did.
Lectures are hard to follow.
If you're looking for a cakewalk, do NOT take Dr. Voss. He is one of the most intelligent people I've ever taken, and it shows. Lectures are really interesting if you go into them with an open-mind. He does curve his exams tremendously, but don't let that be an excuse to do poorly. Take him if you've got the chance to
Prof. Voss is one of the best lecturers at the University of Kentucky. He is extremely educated and far from boring. I always enjoyed going to his class. His tests are practically impossible but he uses such a high curve that your grade at the end reflects honestly how hard you tried. I would not take anyone else for PS101.
Dr. Voss was the best professor I've had at UK hands down. His class was very hard, but it was rewarding because I learned a lot, and even though the tests were tough, I ended up with a B in the class. He presents material well and is extremely intelligent. I wouldn't advise skipping his class, and tests require a lot of studying.
Dr. Voss is one of UK's most intelligent professors. As everyone else says on this page, make sure you attend lecture. Dr. Voss works with a very intense curve. Basically the top 20% of grades get A's. Next 40% get B's, and so on. The three tests will most likely have you pulling your hair out but you will be thankful to have taken this course.
Great professor & intelligent in his field. His tests are difficult but you will learn so much from him. I usually hate historygovernment classes and I enjoyed this class because he made the content very interesting. Attendance isn't technically mandatory but he doesn't use a textbook so attending class is really the only way to learn the content.
He is a tough teacher but if you go to class and actually pay attention you will be fine! When you are taking notes make sure to write what he is talking about rather than whats on the power point.
I absolutely loved my time in his classroom. He is not an easy teacher, not because the material is hard, but because he makes you critically think, which is a skill most college freshman don't have. It's definitely not a "memorize and make flash cards class"; it requires a deeper understanding. He is a great professor, and his class is worthwhile.
There is a lot to learn from Prof. Voss. His lectures are full of information which you will see on the tests. The tests are definitely tough with a mix of defining questions, multiple choice, and short answer. There is no text book, but a $15 subscription to the WSJ, therefore saving you money! MUST Work hard! Worth the time and effort for sure!
I loved taking PS101 with Dr. Voss. His lectures are very interesting, but you need to go to all of them if you want to do well in his class. There's no textbook, but a fair amount of articles that you'll need to read. If you have any questions, I've found that he's very helpful if you just ask. All in all, a great class and intelligent professor!
Voss was a great professor. He loved talking about his field and he sticks with his material as far as what's on the test. No textbook, just a WSJ subscription. A lot of articles, but all fairly short. I missed a ton of lectures and still passed. He posts all of his notes and lectures, so it's easy to stay connected. Great class. Easy for me.
Dr. Voss is a very intelligent and engaging professor. His lectures are always interesting and on topic. He is sure to give you all the information you will need on a subject, along with a good story as well. I would take him again.
You must GO TO CLASS. If he sees that people are skipping, he will give you hints on what will be on the test, and trust me THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. The tests are really hard, but if you actually try hard, the curves will be on your favor! GO to office hours, he is very friendly.
He is a smart person in his field, but is not a good 100 level teacher don't take him, exams are very hard, he is really boring, if you are not interested in the subject better US citizenship classes out there, he does curve well but really, + bonus i got 18100 and i studied well for the exam got 100 on all hw quizes but i got an e for midterm.
Dr. Voss is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've had. But his exams are very hard. But he curves HEAVILY! If you're an A student you'll get an A in the course, if you're a B student you'll most likely get a B, same with C, D, and E. Highly recommend if you're very interested in U.S government but be aware of what is to come.
One of the best classes I've taken. Dr. Voss is a really good lecturer and tells awesome stories to illustrate his points. Overall, he is one of my favorite professors at UK.
He posts all his slides online but in order to succeed you have to go to class. He says so many specific things during class that are important for the tests. The tests are rough but definitely doable if you do the readings and go to class.
Terrible Professor made the class way harder than need be
The amount of reading in this class is ridiculous. The avg. grade on exams is a 45-50%. He does give a nice curve, but the class is all around stressful and way too much reading that you have to do for a 100 level course. I do not recommend taking this unless you enjoy reading a ton.
I don't recommend taking his course. PS 101 was a one hundred level class that he made entirely too difficult. His exams are horrible. The average for our 1st exam was a 46%. That should say a lot. He doesn't give study guides and just expects you to know everything. I am a 4.0 student, attended every lecture, studied, and still struggled.
My only problem with Dr. Voss is that he may be too smart for his own good. His directions and wording on tests, online and other class material is very comprehensive and seems unfit for a level 100 class. Otherwise, his lectures are entertaining, he is funny and overall a good guy. He curves the tests and if you study hard you will end up ok.
Dr. Voss is an expert in his field. He went to Harvard, so he's very intelligent. Expect to put in at least 10 hours a week. You should really only have him if you're a PS major IMO. His tests average in the 30s/100. Not worth the work for a 100 level. Wrote his own text book, he posts it on BB! $15 WRD Subscription is mandatory though.
He's a great professor. Yes, it's hard work, but he actually wants you to learn. Don't take his class if you're lazy. An A is absolutely possible, but isn't easy.
He is a very good professor, but the average test score is 40%-50%, and if you don't go to class you won't do well. He does post most powerpoints online, but if you don't know what he said in lecture then you won't get what you need from the powerpoint. I would not take this class if you're looking for an easy class.
not really the "intro to american government" I had expected. More of a history class until the last portion of the semester where he throws it all together. Wasn't impressed. Attendance is absolutely mandatory and don't be shaken when you find out the average on all of the exams are below 50%. If reading isn't for you, drop now.
Dr. Voss was one of my favorite professors. He gets really into his lecture subjects and is easy to listen to during lectures. I really didn't go to class all that often and still managed to get a good grade. Tests are crazy tough, and there's a LOT of reading assignments. No textbook, only a WSJ subscription, which is only $15. Overall great class
The tests are extremely hard, but has a huge curve. As long as you go to class and study, you will do fine.
hard entry level class, if you get through it you will see the upper levels are not as hard. I did not like his style of teaching or grading. Youre grade is based on the class. If you get a 60 on each exam , you get an A.
Legislative Process; Dr. Voss is a skilled lecturer and always makes his presentations engaging and pertinent. His assignments definitely make you work. His tests are difficult and project/paper require lots of time, however, he is a professor that really wants his students to learn and is willing to go the extra mile to provide a strong education.
I absolutely loved Dr. Voss. One of the hardest classes my Freshman year but also one of the most rewarding. His tests are difficult but his curve makes up for it, as long as you read and go to lecture you will do fine. You can really tell his passion for PS and thats what made his lectures so enjoyable. Although attendance is not counted, GO.
This class involved a lot of studying, but was worth it. Dr. Voss is extremely intelligent and makes his class fun to attend. He curves all of the exams so that helps out a lot, I recommend taking him if you are a PS major/minor.
One of the best teachers I have ever had! Great lectures, and needed to pass! Notorioua for being super hard, but its college get over it
Dr. Voss, a professor with his doctorate in government from Harvard, tries to make every student in the class feel like they have no clue what is going on; he does very well at it too. He tries to make it seem harder than is actually is, if you get past that and realize its a 100 level class simply with confusing readings , you'll do fine.
Yes, he does give huge curves but that doesn't mean the class is easy. Even with the enormous curves (one test gave like 50 points), I would still get B's on everything, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time studying beforehand. Taking his class was totally worth the B though. His lectures are incredible, so interesting. Great for PS majors.
Dr. Voss is the best Professor I have had at the University of Kentucky. I have taken multiple courses under his instruction and hope to take any more that he should teach. Dr. Voss is a teacher who is Harvard educated and it shows. He tries to develop points and connect all areas of learning which develop well one's critical thinking ability.
He is an awesome teacher and really likes the material. He is super friendly and accessible. There is a lot of reading but anyone that says it's excessively hard usually doesn't go to class. Go to class and read and you'll be fine.
Voss was easily one of the best professors that I've ever had. Lectures were extremely interesting, and made up a majority of what was going to be on the exams. Exams were tough, but if studied the lecture notes it wasn't too bad. This class is a lot of work, but I really enjoyed it overall.
Absolutely terrible professor. You have no clue what your grade is or what your standing in the class is for the entire semester. He doesn't give you any reasoning to your final grade in the class. In my opinion he is way too hard of a teacher for a 101 class and is always on a power trip. 10/10 wouldn't recommend!!
If you're a political science major I 100% recommend taking Dr. Voss. His lectures are interesting and it's obvious he loves what he's teaching. The majority of the exams were lecture heavy, so while attendance isn't mandatory, if you skip, the exams will be much harder. Overall he's an amazing professor and I'll definitely take him again.
Voss is a rockstar at teaching, and i mean that quite literally. His lectures are like a show. He's energetic, funny, knows what he's talking about, and knows how to make material interesting and relatable. He's hard, but it's worth it.
Voss is definitely a great professor, but he is not an easy one. He is a hard grader, covers a lot of material in his lectures, and makes you read a lot of material online in canvas. A plus side is you do not need to buy a super expensive book and that you will learn a lot. Be prepared to work and study. Hard but worth it.
Prof. Voss is the best lecturer I have ever taken. He is interesting, funny, and knows just about everything about political science. His exams and online quizzes are EXTREMELY hard, but if you work for it and meet with your TA, it is manageable. If you are a lazy student and don't care about political science at all, don't waste his time.
Prof. Voss is by far one of my favorite lecturers. He makes his lectures interesting and worth your time. Do your best to attend all your lectures and section meetings; if you don't it will be difficult for you. Also, I took his class because it fulfilled a UKCore requirement, but it was well worth it. The class makes you work for what you learn.
This class may not be for non-PS majors (!), so I understand some of the harsh comments, but it is AMAZING if you're a PS major. The tests VERY clearly reflect the material and the grading is extremely fair. Yes, a difficult class, but SO straightforward. Do the workyou'll get an A. Hides his political views soooo well. He knows what he's doing.
If you're not a political science major I wouldn't recommend taking. He was a very difficult grader. I had no idea what my grade was until the very last professors could put grades in. His lectures were interesting but not worth the all the work.
Literally do not take this unless you are a PS major. His lectures are interesting but he prides himself on how difficult the tests are and doesn't give you a way to calculate your grader at all. At the end of the semester he didn't even show us our final exam grades which was a huge part of our grade. Seriously would not recommend taking.
He's very insulting to students
Griped and groaned about students walking into his class THREE minutes late saying it takes time out of his lecture. Three minutes. He wasted his lecture time talking about how students late three minutes interrupt his lecture.
I'm a junior, and in all three years in college, I've never had a professor as bad as this one. Even my advisor acknowledged how disrespectful, condescending, and unreasonable he is. Unfortunately, he has tenure so the school cannot get rid of him. Students, boycott this man!
Voss is tough, but he definitely knows how to teach the content and make it stick. He is an amazing person overall and he easily earned my respect. I really want to keep in touch in the future for advice in the Political Science field and I absolutely would take his class again. He makes you work but it's worth it.
very unreasonable, brags about his tests being hard, calls students out during class, and just threatened the whole class saying he would lower everybody's grade because one persons phone went off in class. He also said that people walking into class 2 or 3 minutes late were disrupting class and he would take points off if you were late at all.
Professor Voss is unprofessional and rude. He interrogated a girl in my class because he heard a phone go off and thought it was hers when it actually wasn't. He then continued to belabor the point and tell her and her friends they wouldn't get jobs. This is not the first time he has taken his personal problems out on students.
Despite him being super intimidating at times, he's a great professor! Yes his class is hard, but you actually learn a lot from it. His lectures are very interesting, especially because he is very passionate in what he says. Go to class and read the required readings and you'll be fine.
Professor Voss has a lot of bad ratings and it is probably due to people who didn't put much work into the class. When a 48%-60% on an exam gets curved to a B then the class isn't hard. Go to class, study, read the readings and you will easily get a B quite possibly an A. You literally have to do nothing in this class to fail it is curved so much
He assigns several readings for each homework assignment. The tests cover so much material and you're expected to know specific details about everything. He told us that he makes the tests super hard on purpose. He does grade on a curve though, my 49 test average is a B. Expect to put in several hours of work outside of class.
This is a hard class and Voss is a tough professor. His exams are hard but there is a cushion and if you go to class and study, you'll do fine on them. His lectures are interesting. He takes attendance every class. You have to go to recitation. Voss is a great professor to have on your side. He gets a bad rap because he does make you work for an A.
Lectures are interesting and packed full of information. If you take notes on what he says (not what's on the slides) then you will do well on the exams. The class really isn't that hard when you consider the curve (a 70 on an exam is usually considered an A). Voss is fairly tough and sometimes rude, but he is an exceptional instructor.
Dr. Voss is one of the best professors I've had outside of my major at UK. His exams are really hard, but if you go to class and take notes (and then study them) you'll be fine. The curve is huge which helps. He's engaging in lectures and wrote his own textbook literally so his students don't have to buy one. He makes you work but is so great.
I took him my freshman year and I couldnt have had a better experience. If youre looking for a class to half ass this isnt the class for you. I left his class more knowledgeable and a overall better student.
Never have I been more entertained and engaged during lectures. This class rewards hard work and Dr. Voss is available outside of class. Please take ps101 with him if given the opportunity. Dont be intimidated hes fantastic. Really, this was a class Ill never forget.
A lot of students complain about Dr. Voss, which I can understand from the point that you are uncertain what your grade is. However, grading aside, Dr. Voss is the best professor I have had at UK. This is one of the few courses I feel like I have actually learned a ton in. If you have the right mindset, you will enjoy and succeed in the course.
He is a great lecturer and you can see how passionate he is about the subject and teaching it. However, it is entirely too hard to be a 101 level class. For someone who is not a PS major and just needed the credit, it will not be your favorite class. His readings are excruciatingly long and exams are so hard. The curve does help, though.
Dr. Voss is the best professor you will have here at UK. I mean the man is top of the line and not bias at all. You will learn so much from the man and if you don't take him and you are a Poly Sci major, change your damn major. I will say, You will fail his class if you don't have the discipline to show up to his grade A lectures.
I'm a Political Science major so I love this kind of stuff, so I enjoyed his class. Voss is brilliant and passionate about his work and teaching, although quite cynical. If you enjoy politics and riguours leaning/studying and intense exams, then take this class. DONT take this if you even question your interest in politcs.
The exams are not that hard if you actually study! More than half of the content on the exams comes from his lectures so as long as you go to the lectures and take notes, you should be fine. Also, his lectures are great-- they are not boring at all. Other information comes from the readings and homework (little hw overall). Great professor!
Not the first class taken with Voss, usually love them but this wasn't great. All major assignments assigned in the last 1.5 months, nothing graded and returned in a timely way so you can improve, then destroyed on grades for not knowing what to make better. So painfully reading heavy it's impossible to keep up.
An information OVERLOAD, pay attention to the powerpoint/ topics highlighted in recitation and you should be just fine. TAs do understand how difficult he is and try to help out. He is a great professor and you can tell that his work is his life's passion. The only issue is how intense it is for a 101 class.
Dr. Voss is one of THE best professors a student could have. He doesn't care about you just getting an A, he truly wants to grow you as a student and not just for his class but for you in the future. I hated political science before taking his class and I'm a PT major! Take any class of his because you will leave as a better student!! He's great!
Dr. Voss is truly one of my favorite professors I've ever had. His lectures were nothing short of entertaining and jammed pack with information that is very useful throughout your degree if you are a PS major. The class is very difficult, especially for only being a 101 class. However, if you are a PS major, his class will be greatly beneficial.
Dr. Voss is a great professor. He genuinely cares about the students and wants them to succeed in college. He gives helpful advice on how to live and pass college. 10/10 would recommend. He is chill and cares about your thoughts and your perspective. Could not have asked for a better professor!
Professor Voss is genuinely the worst professor I have taken at UK. While it is obvious that he is incredibly knowledgible (Harvard educated and it shows), he lacks the interpersonal skills to articulate that to his students. His readings are incredibly difficult and rarely explained in class. He prides himself on failing students.
In all I would never take him again. The test are the hardest things ever, I have no idea where he even gets half of the information for them. I read all the readings and watch the lectures and yet I still have no idea what half the questions are about on the test.
Voss is a joke of a professor. Exams are ridiculous, currently if you got a 67% on a test you are in the top 1/4 of the class. Do not waste your time taking this class for a core credit. Voss needs to be replaced.
Voss is a great professor. I have probably learned more in this course than I have in any other PS course at UK. Those complaining about him probably took other PS courses with easier professors and expected the same thing. This isn't an easy course, but Dr. Voss knows what he's talking about and leaves you with valuable information.
Poli sci is a hard course, and although Voss was a good professor, his course was difficult to understand at first. He grades on a curve, so don't worry if you didn't do the best on the tests, but it's VERY important that you do the reading, listen to the lectures, and take extensive notes if you wanna do well in that class. I enjoyed class though!
Dr. Voss is a great professor! I thoroughly enjoyed his class and learned a lot. I would encourage anyone looking for a good class to take this course!
The only thing that frustrated me in PS101 was not knowing my exact grade. However, you always know a ballpark of where you are. As long as you do the required reading and attend/watch lectures semi-regularly, the tests are pretty straight forward. I would also say he is a fairly easy grader.
Voss was a very hard professor. His class is graded on a curve because it is so hard so you don't know your grade all year which is frustrating. The tests were very hard and cover very specific things in the readings. My advise would be to dedicate time everyday to really understand the readings.
Dr. Voss really knows his stuff. He doesn't lecture at students he talks to you and never makes anyone feel stupid or calls students out. Attendance wasn't mandatory, 90% of your grade came from participating in discussions, you could "miss" or not contribute to the discussion 13 times without it hurting your grade. He's very flexible, responsive.
Voss was and still is the best lecturer I've had at UK. While each lecture was long, it was very engaging with a lot of interesting and useful information. If you do the readings and listen to the lectures you should pass with an A. It is challenging, but worth it in my opinion. He also adds a large curve which can help you out in the end.
I'd imagine you would love PS101 if you're a poli-sci major. If not, you're kind of a sitting duck in this course if you don't take action. Voss knows his stuff but he is TOUGH. You have to read, attend lectures, and take notes no matter what. Grading is fairly unclear, but there's a huge curve, so don't panic if you bomb a test or two.
Take this course if you want to have a hint to tell you that you are not build for college
DO NOT take this class if you arent into poli-sci He creates his own textbook so be prepared to READ and if you miss 1 class you WILL be behind! Hes a nice guy but hard to understand what hes even saying, in my opinion! wouldnt recommend taking this class as a freshman.
The best lecture I've ever had. You have to do the reading and notes because the best is timed and on the harder side. But overall a good Prof and a good class.
Ridiculously hard and doesn't help. His version of "constructive criticism" is just criticism and rude. Our class average on one exam was 49% and he spent an entire class analyzing why our scores were so bad. He sent me an "academic alert" about my attendance even though I never missed a class.
Voss is very engaging. He is also extremely slow, unreliable, and unclear in terms of grading; you won't know your grade until after the final. Voss can be very condescending towards students and expects students to work with him/his shortcomings while failing to work with students. This is an unnecessarily difficult and stressful class.
Yes he grades with the "Voss curve", but he tells you that in the beginning so it's no shock. Don't be scared to ask questions!! He's extremely helpful if he sees you're putting in the work to understand the material. Read the readings he puts out & definitely look at the recommended links, it'll make a difference. Definitely recommend his course!
Allow me to preface this by saying that I really like Dr. Voss. He is highly intelligent and cares about what he is teaching. His lectures are super engaging and relevant. His class is exceedingly difficult for a 100-level course, and his exams are graded very hard, but he does curve exam grades which helps. Poli Sci majors should take his class.
I see a lot of people saying this class was hard. While it was not a cake walk, as long as you follow the readings you should be fine. I stopped going to lectures after September 20th and still finished with a very high B. He is very knowledgeable, efficient, and organized which I really respect. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
Honestly hes a fair teacher if you do the work you will do well. The grading scale he uses is confusing but if you do the math you get a good idea of what grade you have. He is very good at answering emails he will work with you when something is wrong. Over all a good teacher you just have to put the work in.
Stephen Voss is by far the best professor I've had at UK. His lectures are engaging and informative, the readings are insightful and well-written, and he genuinely cares for his students. His class requires a bit of work if you want a good grade. However, his lectures make the class worth the work.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He made his own textbook and the readings are long and hard to comprehend. His TA's grade everything and are very picky. Anyone that says they love this class or this teacher are lying to you.
He was such a bad grader and never clear about anything. A 28% was considered a B???
There's a huge curve at the end of the semester, but only 20% got an A. Exams are very hard and timed, but they're online and open book. You'll be fine if you take organized notes during the lectures and rewatch the lecture videos before the exams! My notes were the main reason I got an A. Reaching out and visiting the office hours helps a lot too.
Dr. Voss is as thorough as any PS professor I've had. This brought out the best in our class even when my classmates tried to slack off the course content. Our Kentucky Politics course was extremely interactive and engaging. He is intentional about grading - you won't backdoor your way into an A. Show up to class, participate, and ask questions!
I had Voss last semester. you won't know your grade the whole semester and I feel like that puts an unreasonable amount of anxiety on the majority of people. I don't really like how 32% on an exam was considered a "B" in this class because he bell curves. if you don't pay attention to lectures you will not get a good grade.
This Professor is the worst prof. I have ever had and ever will have in my life. His lectures are barely related to what will be on the test and the tests are very hard on top of all of this he has required readings and it is way too much for an average student that is taking 5 classes plus it being a core class.
As long as you show up prepared to work, you should be fine.
Dr. Voss is the best professor I have had, as he cares more about student comprehension then grades. His lectures are entertaining and you'll want to make sure you go to them. As long as you show up and do the homework readings, you'll perform well on the exam. His grading curve is not hard to understand if you pay attention while he explains it.
Voss, is one of the best professors I have ever had! He truly cares about the students & what he teaches. You can tell he enjoys teaching as well & this is a great quality to have! Advice on success: -Do NOT skip class! -Read EVERYTHING! -Quiz yourself. Make sure you are able to verbalize terms & their importance. -Get a study group!
He was very passionate about the material which I liked, I didn't like how the exams were graded though. I feel like even if I studied all of the material, the tests were still hard and didn't relate. The curve was weird and I didn't like how I didn't know my grade. I did learn a lot, just didn't do well on the exams.
Dr Voss's PS101 class is the hardest class I've ever had to take. With that said, it was the BEST class I've ever taken. You will learn more from this class than you ever have before. Sure, the class is difficult, but if you want to learn- take Voss. He's very funny and his lectures are amazing.
I read the reviews for him before I took his class and was terrified, but you shouldn't be at all. He's incredibly aware his tests are hard, obviously, but he gives you more than enough material to do well. Going to class isn't mandatory after the first few days, but it is SO helpful for learning. Also, half the answers are in the readings, so READ
This is the worst professor I have ever had. His tests do not reflect anything from lecture and he makes them almost impossible to pass. I am an average A or B student and these are the worst grades I have ever received. Save yourself and do not take his class.
If you are a good test taker and you study you will be fine. This class was so interesting and his lectures are AMAZING. He is an incredible professor and very accessible! Definitely make sure he knows you as it is so helpful for the class! If you show up to lecture, you will be fine! Loved this class! The reason I switched to Poli Sci!
His grading system is awful. His 101 classes are so difficult that the average grade on his exams is an F. And that's not an exaggeration at all. So he is forced to curve everyone in the class upward in order to continue teaching 101 level classes.
Amazing professor. He knows what he's talking about and is very passionate about his job. Exams are difficult but he does curve them. Very lecture heavy so if you miss one and you don't get the notes, your cooked. I love this class, 10/10 I absolutely recommend.
Exams are extremely hard for no reason, so everyone fails and he has to do a very heavy curve so the class average isn't a 20%.
He is a very nice teacher, and his lectures are great. The TAs grade your tests, and some grade harder than others, but then the curve for that TA's section is steeper. Lectures are super important, and if you don't come, you won't do well. The SI instructor is very helpful.
Dr. Voss is very clearly an extremely intelligent professor. He's a very charismatic lecturer and I wish his exams could reflect his lectures better. They're very difficult to the point I got an exam score in the 60s and in the 30s and both were curved to a B. I'd recommend him, but be willing to always go to class and take excellent notes.
Prof. Voss is a great teacher with super engaging lectures, but if you don't show up, you're basically done for. Be ready to read and annotate 50+ pages weekly. I wouldn't recommend this as a 101 class because the tests are very difficult, even with the curve. The good news: he responds to emails fast.
Difficult tests but fair grader, you will do well if you attend lectures. Accommodating if needed, Interesting lectures and definitely cares about what he is teaching about.
Dr. Voss' tests are not as hard as many people make them seem, but you do need to study and pay attention during lectures. There is a lot of reading that also requires comments and interaction with other students' comments, which are graded.
Dr. Voss' class is not as bad as everyone says. His tests are very difficult and mainly reflect topics he spoke on in lectures, but if you take in depth notes and pay attention you will be completely fine. I would start to study two nights before a test and attend the study session hosted and do very well (with the curve) every time.
