I took Native Americans. Mr. Wiley is extremely knowledgable about his subject. He is a cool prof.; likes class discussions. Willing to help. ALot of writing. Very respectful of his subject. Does group projects/lectures.
Took Native American course. a lot of papers, however most are doable. good instructor
Is one of those professors that doesn't give out A's. He's degrading and can be hard to approach. If you don't mind doing a lot of busy work and getting silly grades like a B++ then this class if for you.
Too many papers. Also we as a class did all the teaching he sat on his rump. The less I tried the better my grades got? Last dont expect to get papers back within a reasonable amount of time.
Duh?
he is one of the better professors @ normandale because he is very open and willing to take his time to help, although he is tough at times.
Definately writing intensive. Huge written research project required with powerpoint.I really liked those student presentations, however. Learned alot! Very interesting archaeology sites explored. He is willing to help students. Big on attendance. Is flexiable on deadlines if you talk to him first. Alot of material covered in one semester class.
Basically gives so many projects that the students teach the class. When he does say something, it's usually offensive or rude and unrelated. He also is against giving As, because I got As on everything, but still got a B in the class. Disrespectful. On several occasions, he would set up a time to meet with students and not show up. A grouch.
Very difficult class, but you'll learn not only about other cultures, but about yourself. I'd advise taking English Comp. before taking his class. Very writing and reading intensive! He cares if you care.
This was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He let the students do most of the teaching. He had too many papers and the guy has a degree in English and grades papers like it's a comp class. We liked to call him Dbag because he was always in such a bad mood and not willing to help anyone.
Wish this guy was gone, horrible teacher, horrible guy, waste of my time, did I say how much of a jerk this guy was? I agree totally with the comments below me, this person probably sat by me and wished how much this teacher would not show up for class.
Took this class when it was still 1097, this guy man, I tell you after a melt down in my life, that he was well aware of which required extensive traveling he****ted on me at the end. i turned in a ll the papers early and yet whatever, anywasy smart guy but a pain in the ass-
good prof, takes his stuff seriously and has students present materiel from the book but also is more then able to fill in gaps or holes in the literature. lots of writing but only 4-5 papers that are over 500 words. very smart and cares only if you do. If you are willing to make an effort he will meet you more then half way.
Wiley is kind of a slacker about getting stuff back to you and giving feedback. he is very passionate about the subject and he does know his stuff. Pretty nice guy as well. The textbook for this class is kind of hard to read but interesting once you make sense of it.

TERRIBLE. If you want to save your GPA, I would not suggest registering with this professor. This class had very interesting material, however he is the most unreasonable grader I've ever had. On good days, he is generally rude and condescending, on bad days.........
Yes he makes comments that could potentially be offensive, but he is a smart man who knows his stuff. The grade is based upon writing and attendance can help or hurt you, so if you don't like it or are not going to be happy about daily writing assignments, save yourself some time. If you don't mind doing busy work and writing, it is a good class.
There hasn't been a Wiley class I have taken that I haven't learned alot. Tough grader, but you know if you got a B or an A you earned it. Intense writing, but qualifies for U of M or other 4 yr college writing criteria, so that helps. No final, but makes that up with writing requirements. So if you like to write and hate tests, his class rocks.
waw! if you want play your future and GPA go to this low life person.
A really smart guy, he knows his stuff, but a really hard teacher. Lots of homework and writing. The text book is a very hard read. Don't take this class if you are worried about your GPA or if you don't have a lot of time on your hands.
His name says it all, can be nice to u as a person & completely f@*( you on your grade. I'm typically an A student, I've gotten 2 B's and this D my entire 40 credit college career. Stay away from him for your GPA's sake. Doesn't even typically leave nice comments on papers. Reading's too extreme for what it's worth.
The class was difficult but I loved it. So much so in fact that I decided to major in anthropology. He is a facinating person and a wonderful professor.
I was interested in this class and I learned TONS-very different, enlightening, challenging material. Lots of open minded, informal discussion, Wiley is very helpful but is determined to make you think for yourself, and he grades hard on papers; he used to teach comp., so keep that in mind! It was difficult but I loved it! It expanded my horizon!
Do not take one of his classes if youre looking for an easy ride. He's challenging, thought provoking, and worldly. He can open your mind to a whole new perspective, IF, youre willing to work for it. He was one of the best profs. ive ever had.
I didnt like him at first because he seemed to have a sarcastic personality I couldnt figure out. I ended up repsecting him as a teacher becase I learned a lot in his class. The class is very hard but he worked with me to get a A.
Great Class, definitely not for everyone. Must have an open mind and enjoy thinking for yourself. He wont spoon feed you the material for this class so be prepared to participate. Several writing assignments, but no tests.
Nice guy. He knows his stuff a little too well. Only take this class if you like anthropology and like thinking outside the box. Entire semester is based on reading out of the books(3) and listening to the class interpert them. Very boring!! Hard to follow. Grades papers rediculously hard!! I never recieved better than a C- on any of my papers.
The absolute worst teacher I have ever had. He is rude, impatient, and unclear about paper expectations. There is nothing factual about this class, so if you're into concrete learning then forget it. He grades papers hard and has no good method for teaching. I read reviews and didn't believe them and now I wished I listened. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE!
He is a fascinating man, but not the best teacher. you have to write his way, or else you are a wrong
Very Knowledgeable and can be interesting on some days. No tests in his class which is great, however he is a very difficult grader and doesn't give out to many A's or B's, In addition the work load is a bit ridiculous I've had 300 level classes with less. He does grade you on attendance as well so don't miss, wouldn't recommend him.
I am almost done with my SUMMER SESSION class with him, meaning I fit everything into a month and one week. It was HARD. I spent close to 35 hours each week on homework, easily. I met with him in his office, he is a nice guy,but wants us to know Everything about each culture. Kind of ridiculous. If youtake this class, you can succeed, with some wo
Magic, Witchcraft, & religion- more like anth of religion- i think we spent a day on magic and witchcraft. overall, decent teacher, tough on papers but thats all he grades on besides attendence
Want to open your mind to other cultures, take the class. Want an easy class - skip it. Hard class but worth the effort. Loved the video's we had to watch as they were eye opening to how American's expect too much - for example an easy class in college. Yeah it was hard, didn't like how he graded my grammar in the papers but good class. Recomm
While I learned a lot in this class, the professor was abrasive and condescending. I don't think he MEANS to be, I think that is just his nature but it's still hurtful and off-putting. He does know his stuff, however. The class was challenging but I liked his assignments etc.
While I had a hard time in his class, I found it to be very worthwhile; both in the academic knowledge obtained and in the feeling of accomplishment at having earned a good grade in a difficult class. I'd highly recommend Mr. Wiley if you're willing to work for your grade. He's a great person, and an asset to the college.
I've had Mr.Wiley for two of my anthropology classes. He knows his stuff, smart professor, i wish more professors were like him. Love his assignments and teaching. Dont expect to get an easy A, also is a difficult grader on papers. other than that i love taking classes with him!
AMAZING TEACHER! He's a super tough grader, but if you do your work and show up you'll be fine. He absolutely requires attendance-checks daily. He'll help when asked, and knows and has a passion for his subject. Really promotes you to talk. I didn't like him at first and was very indecisive, but he is now my absolute favorite teacher at Normandale.
Intro to Anthropology. Total hard liner from the get go. He makes you keep a journal of all class and out of class notes that need to be turned in on assigned dates. One of those teachers that thinks his is the only class being taught at the school. Uber confusing syllabus. Multiple books required. Buyer beware.
I took Anthropology of Religion with him and he was absolutly amazing! Discussions were incredibly entertaining and interesting. Course consisted of reading and answering questions and then discussing in class. Grading was hard but fair. Wiley is really knowledgable about subject but if you are not willing to work hard/attend class dont take it.
I really enjoyed this class, even with the large work-load. There is a lot of writing, and he wants you to really think about what you are learning. I felt that this helped me get more out of the material. He also appreciates when you take part in the classroom discussions by sharing your thoughts and opinions.
horrible.boring.judemental, rude, out of line teacher. would not recommend this teacher to anyone who wants a positive learning experience.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!..the way he makes you take notes and keeps journals is ridiculous..He is very rude and just makes this class such a bad expirience. I regret taking the class!!
MEAN!! Wants things done when it's due. No late homework accepted. Lots of reading!
Avoid taking his classes unless there are no other options. He's confusing, disorganized, goes on tangents during class, and his grading system is biased. Far too much work for a 3 credit introductory anthropology class.
Worst teacher ever. He's extremely biased and will give you a bad grade just because he doesn't like you. This class is way to difficult for an 1000 level class.
i really did not like him at all!!!he gives bad grades because he doesn't like you, or like how you write. he isn't very open to new ideas everything has to be done his way. and when i didn't really understand something instead of helping me understand he put me on the spot and made me answer a bunch of questions i didn't know the answer to.
Mr. Wiley is an awesome teacher! He is very knowledgable on his topics and keeps the class engaged. Be warned that this is a very writing intensive course. He grades based on quality. Bottom line: if you aren't writing well thought out papers, you will sink. Wiley likes participation and hates slackers/procrastinators.
He's a nice guy, but he doesn't tell you what he expects upfront. Only after a few weeks will you understand
This class was more work than I had expected but I loved it. He is a vessel of knowledge & makes class very interesting. In contrast to other ratings, I do not think he is arrogant or biased. He just doesn't have patience for slackers. If you don't want to think creatively or engage in the subject at hand, this isn't the class or professor for you.
He's a good teacher. He won't like you if you don't show initiative. If you slack off in his class, he will call you out. He was very understanding when I was unable to complete my assignments on time due to personal/family issues. He's very kind, witty, understanding and very knowledgeable about the field of Anthropology.
This class was a lot of work but it was one of my favorite classes. Wiley has a plethora of knowledge & it's interesting to listen to what he has to say. He is not arrogant or rude. He doesn't have patience for inconsiderate students; he considers not being prepared for classroom discussion to be inconsiderate. I wish more teachers were like him.
Do not take this class (M,W &R). It had to be the most boring class I've ever taken. Wiley would be an interesting guy to talk to outside of school but as a teacher he sucks. I learned absolutely nothing. This class is nothing but constant busy work. IT IS WRITING INTENSIVE. Had I known that I would've never taken the class. He doesnt use d2l.
I would only recommend this class if you have an open mind for everything. It is not an easy class to take. There are journals that are due just about every class period that he grades harshly, same with his essays. There are no tests. Join his anthropolgoy club. Do the extra credit. He final grade is based on how much he thinks you learned.
2 Words: WRITING INTENSIVE. No tests is the only thing good about it. However, 3-4 papers (time dependent) and daily/weekly journals on the short stories you read. I took his online class and I will say it was easier than taking it in class especially during the summer. Overall, critiques you harshly but wants you to succeed.
Very busy class, no tests which are nice, a lot of daily homework. Do the homework thoroughly, show up every single day, and attempt to answer questions and youll get an A
Not a terrible guy, yet a ridiculously unreasonable curriculum and expectations. I'm trying to do you a favor here, pick a different professor if at all possible. He gets mad if you "guess" when he proposes questions, yet gets even more upset when you don't participate at all. How can you win?
This is a writing intensive course...even though I'm great writer, it was impossible to please him. He's vague in his instructions and nothing can be taken away from his class. This class could be very interesting if it was taught by almost anyone else.
Magic and religion was a facinating topic, and his lectures were open-minded and pretty good at going over the concepts that we read about weekly. Its extremely writing intensive, not an easy course. But if you are interested and willing to put in a little more work, then its VERY worth it. :)
I dropped this class after becoming so frustrated with the schedule. I was taking an online Magic, Withcraft and Religion and I hated it. All you do is write and never get to know anything about anyone in the class. His instructions are unclear and his schedule inconsistent and chaotic.
I am currently taking his Anthropology of Magic, Witchcraft, and Religions and I absolutely despise this class. The subject matter is awesome, but he doesn't follow the schedule at all, the work load is atrocious, and the way he assigns certain assignments is nothing short of chaotic. I would not recommend this class to anyone.
Mr Wiley is probably great outside of the classroom, but inside he seems like a mess. If you're looking for unfair, ruthless grading, an unbelievable amount of difficult busy-work, monotonous and tangent-ridden lectures, and a B at best, look no further. You've found your course. This is the most frustrating class I've ever taken.
A very tough grader, but a pretty fun teacher (if you like Anthro that is). His schedule is usually clear. It can be difficult to consistently do well on his assignments; you really have to work to earn the grade. You MUST spend a lot of time on the readings. Being a good writer is very important & following his instructions to a T is necessary.
I hate to criticize, but I feel obligated. Crazy amount of work. The syllabus, which he will direct you back to when you ask for clarification, is extremely confusing and contradictory. Little feedback and direction from him - hard to figure out what he is looking for and adjust. Class started w/ ~ 30 people - by the end only 7 gutted it out.
Horrrrible Teacher
This is an INSANELY ridiculous class. Almost daily, multiple, very confusing assignments. Horrible syllabus, worst ever. Required to watch old VHS tapes on campus; I found 4 out of 5 elsewhere but if you don't do even ONE assignment, you get an F (and who has a VCR in 2013?). And I was looking forward to this class. What shame. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
HATED THIS CLASS. he was so confusing yelled at you if you asked questions would make you feel stupid if you did ask. DONT TAKE HIM.
He's pretty horrible.
I already have a bachelors degree and this is the most unnecessary difficult class I have taken. Worse than 400 level literature classes. He demands way too much, is disrspectful, and threatening to students' grades in an irrational way. Knowledgeable, but not worth it in the slightest
This class is so much work. If you aren't good at figuring out what "this" actually means and what "this" symbolizes and reading between the lines, his class is not for you. It is so much work, and quite unnecessary. He is also rude and intimidating. Wish I would have dropped when I could.
I had personal medical issues arise AFTER the time I could drop the course, so I attempted to keep up, but it was impossible to do so with such a ridiculous amount of work. The emails I did receive from him regarding assignments were borderline abusive and certainly unnecessary.
This course was not intended to be an easy A. To do well, you'll need to prove your understanding and back it up with well written reports. This was the course that made me realize what college level work should be, and that an easy A won't help you later on. Start reading, use the information given, and don't take failure so hard.
My perspective: Yes, Mr. W's course was intense. It was the first class I had taken in 5 years - and I also opted to take the accelerated summer version. I must say though, that I thought his criticisms were constructive and that he provides a challenging course and content to provoke the best out of you. I give him two thumbs up for pushing me.
I am taking Magic, Witchcraft and Religion. It is a very heavy writing course. Wiley does seem intimidating but he does love to get into discussions about the topic and if you have something to addask about, speak up. He likes to impersonate Freud when quoting him, he is very passionate about the subject, and wants his students to understand it.
Stephen Wiley is a horrid instructor. I took his online Magic, Witchcraft, and Religion course, and never have I encountered a man so rude. When given documented and clear evidence he has made a mistake, he refuses to fix the problem. He even went so far as to ask personal information in a required assignment, something professors can't do.
This has to be the worst professor I have ever encountered during my college years. His syllabus is extremely confusing, he is not helpful with anything (just tells you to look back on the syllabus) and he does not update grades online at all. His expectations are very unclear and does not have a good communication.
Wiley knows what he's talking about, but is not helpful to students who don't understand the material. I took his course over the summer and it was way too fast-paced, even though I did well. He was rude to students and seemed to think we had background knowledge on every element of the course. Interesting materialreading.
The entire length of this class he has not been helpful. He is disrespectful to his students by the posts on his page as well as the emails that he sends. I do not recommend that anyone takes his class. I know I would love the class if someone else taught it.
Many are intimidated by Wiley, but he is one of the best teachers yet. Wiley challenges each student with his class discussions, but will help you out if you reach out to him. The class can be a ton of work if you do not stay organized, but worth it. I passed with an A.
Professor Wiley has done nothing this entire semester except for assigning a paper at the end of the year. He sits in the back and either sleeps or makes "hilarious" comments unrelated to the current topic our real teacher, Professor Patrick Bonnie is discussing. I would not recommend taking a Professor Wiley "taught" class.
The course material is challenging and thought-provoking. Not to take if you want an easy A, but if you want something is actually college level and promotes critical thinking, would highly recommend. Found him also very responsive and helpful to personal problems. It is clear that he is passionate about his field and future success of students.
I took the course during the summer while at home. Since I go to a fairly difficult school during the year that is known for being challenging, I figured this course was doable. Stephen Wiley gives ZERO feedback, grades ridiculously hard, and has a weird grading scale. It's hard to know what I am doing wrong without getting information back.
The worst person ever to teach anything.
This course is very informative and you will learn a lot. However, be prepared for answering tough questions and not just reading the material but knowing it backwards and forwards. He is a tough grader but tells you exactly what he wants.
I wouldn't want my worst enemy to take a course with him. He was hard, acted annoyed, and in fact kicked people out of the class; leaving them to beg him to let them re-enroll in the class. Do not take him.
Disrespectful to students, sends emails in all caps, excepts everything done HIS way with HIS interpretation otherwise it's wrong. Expects you to know the culture you're studying before you study it. I got a B, usually I'm a straight A student. So frustrating.
I took this class online during the summer. I knew it would be a crunch but this was unbelievable! I wasn't taking any other class and would never have passed this one if I had anything else on my plate. He isn't very professional with questions raised and forces his beliefs on you to the point of affecting your grade if you cross that line.
