I can't believe how easy he made physics. He stayed after class so many times to help me understand the homework. He also gives partial credit on exams. He knows his stuff, Lectures are crystal clear.
Excellent instruction period. But his tests were super hard, and he never gave enough time to finish them. Very hard professor. Read his notes and do the homework every single time if you want to survive.
Fantastic professor. Very organized and thorough in class; he gives tons of examples in class. Four tests (one dropped) all involving questions from his lectures, SO TAKE GOOD NOTES! Every question in his tests look eerily similar to an example problem that he covers in class. UNDERSTAND the material, and you should be fine. Be clear in thelab too.
He does not care about his summer classes apparently b.c. he was of NO help to me. Physics is really hard, obviously, and this is not my major. I emailed him constantly with questions, or just to make sure I was on the right page; his answers are short and lacking in effort. He provided zero help as far as accommodating long distance students. [F!]
SUPER HARD, HARSH ON GRADE. YOU MUST READ HIS MIND if you want to pass the class. If you are a below B+ student, do not go to him. You must be a super A student then you will somewhat pass his class..
Took him as an online class, too much information provided that makes student confused. He even doesn't know what he wants from students and when you need help to do assignment he just address you the messy information provided in blackboard. I dropped his class because there was no way to understand what he wanted from me.
Homework difficulty is similar to test difficulty. Tests involve a bunch of analysis problems (solving for things), and usually ONE derivation. Provides equation sheet. Has AMAZING notes online. Gives partial credit. Final not cumulative. I suggest starting homework a week before due date. Just do that and you'll be fine. Also read his notes.
He's incredibly pretentious. Students feel like they cant ask questions because he'll just come back with some pompous retort and make you feel bad about asking in the first place. A LOT of mastering physics in a short time frame. That's expected in a summer class, but still, you definitely can't afford to fall behind.
The class is made easier with his notes; but still he is a tough grader and test are hard.
Ridiculously hard. He grades so harsh on test and labs and is extremely unhelpful if you ask him questions or anything. Horrible at explaining things and a horrible professor in general. DO NOT TAKE!
This is the absolute laziest online professor I have ever taken an online class through. Conversation with the instructor was extremely minimal; all of my questions were responded to with short, uninformative, "you should already know this" answers, and there was absolutely NO way of communicating with any other students in the class. Since the cou
Online lab had some issues and he wouldn't help. Didn't pass, because he didn't give any other opportunity for me to get the credit for lab, even though it was a malfunction with the lab's videos. Everytime I asked for help on what I should do with my labs, he kept saying, "Well my computer works!" No help at all. Hw you can get 100. Study hard!
This was the hardest online class I have ever taken, and I have been taking them since freshman year of high school. Professor Wissing is very little to no help over email and I live to far away to go to office hours. He is very blunt about things and if you don't read the textbook, you won't pass. His tests are ludicrous.
He is a great lecturer, presenting the material very clearly. The labs are simple and to the point. His tests, however, are tough. Lots of homework. Lectures are essentially mandatory, especially in the summer. He tests based off the example questions he gives in class. Also, it seemed like he didn't care too much about his students. Must work hard
Professor is very knowledgeable and fair. He explains material very well. Tests are somewhat difficult. Homework is online and also pretty difficult. You really have to take time and study. He helps with homework if you ask questions. In general I would recommend! You can lean a lot.
Best professor ever. He is really knowledgeable and fair. Tests are very long but if you take time and read all the homework you can get an easy A. If you want to learn and get a good grade take his class.
Great teacher, he's very knowledgeable about the subject and explains the information very well. For summer session you will use all 3 hours for lecture but for lab only use around 2. He goes very in detail and derives every equation to fill up the 3 hour block. The tests only test on examples he did in class and hw.
Very tough professor
Careful when signing up for PHY 231. It ended up being a hybrid class. If you really wish to succeed in the class you can, and Professor Wissing helps a lot. The tests are difficult if you don't know what you're doing.
Whoever wants to learn and not just gain credit should take this class. He is very organized and fair. If you study and work hard, you should pass this course and at the same time know that you learned something.
Initially, I felt like Dr. Wissing was helpful. As time passed, his responses became more short and I almost felt like I was annoying him. I was better off trying to figure things out on my own. Take thorough notes on the book reading, review powerpoints, and study homework problems/practice problems for tests! Lectures weren't helpful.
Don't take him. Worst professor ever. Doesn't teach and has no problem failing students.
Awful online professor. His forumula sheets don't help on the exams. The online lectures are videos that he didn't make himself, he uses labs he didn't make, and homework is online. Very lazy, VERY harsh grader. Grading and exam standard are unclear. Can pass all practice clicker q's but not pass any on exam. Material not relevant.
If u are seriously taking this professor then get ready to fail or hurt ur grades. A big no if your grade matters to you. I WAS a huge physics fan by the way.
If you are serious about learning, take him. Be prepared to work hard and have your brain challenged no end. All of his exams were difficult but they were designed to test your analytical thinking and problem solving skills. Pretty useful, in my opinion. I would take him again.
Easy class, studied for exams using his class notes, did the hw online. The exam questions are easy and he grades them with ease. Would take his class again. Was a hybrid class but easy to follow. Will take him again in the future if possible.
If you are planning to take Physics 232 with him, Just don't. I studied a lot every weekend but still end up with a C. His tests are so hard because he asks about the explanations and derivations (using Calc 2), instead of plug-in values. Its a good class for people retaking it, but would not recommend it to the first timer.
Literally, worst professor I ever had. I only had a choice to take his Phy-2 because of my schedule restrictions, and I end up failing it. Btw I had 3.8 GPA which fell down to 3.4. It was my first time to go against any professor's bad ratings, and I regret it.
He is so shy that he'll be looking at the ground while talking to you. Lectures are just so fast that you can't catch up. Overall, I didn't like him but if he would be my last option then I would take him.
He is not a good professor overall, I would avoid him as much as I can.
There are 4 tests each worth 15% of the grade with lab 20% and HW 20%. HW cost around $120 and its not helpful at all. His exams are harsh. You should feel lucky if you get more than 50% because it consists of diagrams and derivations. I know Physics 2 is one the hardest class in NOVA, but this prof made it triple harder.
I am an A student but this class is super hard. I don't know if its the professor or the subject, but I feel like he makes it complicated than what it is.
He no good. I take him last semester and get a C. Now I taking again.
He is an alright teacher. But the only thing I hate about him is his tests. THEY ARE SO COMPLICATED. I studied like 3 hours every week but couldn't get more than 60%.
Tests are extremely difficult. He is a tough grader on exams. If you can't do all the homework on your own and ask for help you will not pass this class. I always loved physics until I took his class and I regret it. Homework is super hard and average took me 2-3 hours to complete. He expects you to read notes and do HW before you ask questions.
Makes concepts much harder than needed.
Dont take him if you dont absolutely have to.
Tests are easy... if you are a master in Physics. He is a super tough grader. I don't know why are all his tests extremely difficult. Also, the questions in the Lab are crazy and super hard. I wish I didn't take his class. Waste my time. I would avoid him as much as I can. If you want an A or B, think carefully before taking his class...
I don't know what he really wants from students. Tests and Lab questions are extremely hard. Tough professor and tough graders. I don't think I would take his class again.
AVOID HIM AT ALL COST. I would stay up all night studying from the text book and would never get above a 60% in the class. Homework is little to no help, it only looks for answers and doesnt show how to get them and on top of that it cost $120. He is also way to shy to be a professor hes lectures too fast, looks at the ground when talking
One of the most difficult professors I have ever taken. As a physics major and I have a hard time understanding what he is lecturing about. Homeworks are nothing like the test, test are insanely difficult and require you to be a master in physics to understand any of them. Avoid him at all costs
I was a physics major but after taking him Im considering changing my major so I dont end up like him.
I really enjoyed this guy's class. I took this as a transfer student from UVA and found this class doable with my eyes closed. He's a really nice guy and lectures in a way that allows students to copy what he's saying. His tests are difficult but the grade thresholds are lowered. Just make sure you have taken Calc 2 and 3 and Diffeq already.
He is a horrible professor who does not care at all about his students and their understanding of course material. I would change schools to avoid being in another class with him. Overall, he shows up to work for the paycheck then leaves. No respect for students or desire to teach.
Do Not Take Him. The class was all online and he didn't offer students any help. The lecture videos weren't even his. Majority of the class failed and he didn't offer test corrections or a curve. He legit didn't do any teaching but expected us to be scholars in physics. Graded the tests and labs super harshly. Overall horrible. I got an A in phy231
Be prepared to study the material until you really understand it. If you want to skim the lecture notes and memorize the steps on a few practice problems, choose a different professor. His exams will make you second guess everything you ever thought you knew... and he's a tough grader. Good choice if you really intend on learning physics though.
PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW IT WAS FROM HIS LATEST CLASS. Absolute worse class Ive ever taken. I go to another univ. and this was far worse than anything I took there. Did not care at all about his students. loads of homework that helped 0% with the tests. tests were ridiculously difficult to take, no matter what we said he wouldnt do anything at all.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Literally the worst class I have ever taken. I'm a student at Virginia Tech and I have a 4.0 gpa. IThis class is ridiculously difficult. Averaged a 57% on tests with 20+ hours of studying and tutoring per week. The materials he posts aren't even his own and he makes his tests ridiculously hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
if you take notes in class and study his examples and homework then the tests are not too bad. he always responded to my emails quickly. met him for office hours a few times and he explained everything. nice guy if you make the effort to talk to him. He curved grades at the end but he doesn't tell you this at the beginning.
I am a graduate of William and Mary going back to school to get a second degree. I got all A's in high school and did well in math. This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. The professor doesn't teach you, he expects you to read the chapters and learn on your own. The questions aren't even related to the matter that you study.
Best physics prof Ive had. After taking phy231 with someone else i switch teachers and glad I did. study his class notes and youll do fine on the tests. I realized this after the first exam. I got an A even though I bombed the first one. Responded to questions very quickly even on weekend.
Had him in Fall 2020 during Covid. He was the only physics teacher teaching on campus. If you want learn, take him. You will have to study, but stick to his notes and the homework. He rounded my grade up to an A.
Will not use a rubric and will exaggerate question point values when you get it wrong. Will not respond to questions about it.
He had never ever appreciate your work instead he will try find sily mistake to discredit your work. I recommend you not to any course from this instructor.
Easy going. just take notes in class and study them and you'll do fine. All his exams follow the same pattern as homework and exams. He will help you in office hours if you need it. Answers emails within hours not days like other teachers i've had. Curved my grade to an A at the end.
This is the worst NOVA class I have ever taken. Professor Wissing was not helpful at all would not show up to office hours and no email responses. The tests are structured to make you fail. Each question with 3-5 parts gave only 15 minutes to complete and he was not clear on how points were deducted. Labs are graded super harshly with no clarity.
taking him now on campus in Fall 21 after Covid. Much better than my virtual 231 class. His explanations in class are clear and he is always coming around to help in lab. Test are okay, you need to study though. never had a prof reply to emails as quickly as he does.
If you want to learn physics take him. He spends most of class doing example problems and demonstrations. Labs are okay. No lab reports. We turn in the worksheet at the end of lab. Only have homework to do outside of class.
Prof Wissing is a failure at running an online class. No actual teaching on his part. Any lecture videos (If there are any) will be from Khan Academy. Notes provided are not his own. His tests are hard due to poor formatting. In this class its 100% you teaching yourself. Expect no help. Your biggest struggle will not be physics, but him.
Maybe it's because it was online, but he's a really tough grader and doesn't give any feedback for tests, at least my other classes would post the corrected answers and feedback but he didn't give anything. You'd have to really devote all of your time for this class.
Never take this professor's online class. He is a very tough grader on both tests and Labs. The worst part was his exam format. You have 15 mins for each question, the next question will only be unlocked when you finish the previous one, you must type in your answer, no pictures of your handwritten are allowed. Worst online class ever!!!
He was super nice! He is passionate about physics and explains things so we can understand. I took this class for engineering and was afraid because I didn't like physics in high school. Mr. Wissing made me understand it so well. He gives a ton of partial credit on exams so if you mess up you can still earn a good grade.
Currently enrolled and so far this guy is great. His class is mostly lecture but he explains everything clearly. Tests cover a lot but i just study his class examples and homework and have earned an A on them. Labs are short and give a nice break from listening to lecture. I recommend highly if you want to learn.
Professor Wissing is a very nice guy and he spends his lectures doing examples and demonstrations. The professor is an amazing person but this class is not easy. Be prepared to spend multiple hours on homework and you need to study a lot for the tests but from my experience professor trys to give as much partial credit as possible on exam.
Amazing professor. Lectures are fantastic and straight to the point. You will be going over a lot of examples in class, and make sure you take notes on them and study them because the test will reflect on them. The homework is typically harder than the tests, but they are good practice. Do them before the next lecture because the materials STACK.
The lectures were amazing, very graphic, and explained things well. Exams are PACKED but a good expectation of the material. Overall great professor, but lot's of work.
Professor Wissing is a great guy and a great professor but his class is not easy. You have to realize that this is physics and you will have to spend multiple hours on homework and studying each week. Professor tries to give as much partial credit as possible but you have to understand the concepts to pass his class.
Professor is a good guy but you have to study a lot to pass his class. I was looking at his rating here and I think his ratings tanked during covid online classes, but in person, his lectures are very informative. A lot of work tho.
I took Professor Wissing in hopes that I could take Uni Phy II straight away without reviewing Calc II (I took it in 2017). He expects you to know that background knowledge so please review! Also, I use a TI-84 Inspire calculator. He told me I can't use it and I failed my exam trying to use a tiny calculator he gave me. Take his class with caution.
Professor Wissing is one the toughest professor I've taken but he's available for office hours almost every day. The tests are challenging but not difficult, they're the reflections of homework and lectures. If you want to do well in his class, be ready to commit a lot of time to study because his class is not an easy A.
As a very good science student accepted into top schools I am pretty sure I can I write a honest review. He teaches lectures pretty well, but the homework are very difficult and the exams are the hardest thing in this planet. No practice exams or review guide. If you work hard you will get a B at best, but if you want an A good luck.
Wissing's lectures are rather excellent: lucid, coherent, logical. On average it seems his students gained a sound grasp of concepts. Physics combines formal logic (maths/procedural) with a sort of lateral thinking (how can one glean information from sparse or inconvenient data set). It's fascinating, but difficult. A time investment is required.
He is very professional to teach Physics I. So, if you have trouble to understand lecture's material, he will help you perfectly. Homework is assigned every week, so you should manage diligently. Also, you will get hard 100 on lab, because he grades very tediously. Lastly, his exams are really hard but not much Physics II.
Continue from Physics I, his lectures are always perfect. So, likewise physics I, he will explain any problems perfectly. Likewise, it is hard to get 100 on lab. Lastly, on exam, it will be much harder difficulty level than Physics I.
Mr. Wissing is very knowledgeable about physics, and his lectures are very informative. I learned a lot in his class. He is quick to respond to emails and very helpful during office hours and when I asked questions. However, he is a very tough grader, and the homework assignments are very high difficulty. This class is very hard to achieve an A.
Lectures are fine until he goes on and makes things more complicated than they should be. A few homework but each one is very difficult to solve. No practice exams or review guide. He taught the last chapter included in the exam and expected us to have exam in the next class, same week!!
This class was very hard for me personally, but I have to give credit to the professor for his great lectures. The class has a lot of ways to study the material, although sometimes it feels irrelevant to the tests. The labs are very strict so do not expect a B or higher every time
Please don't ever take this professor, I have never hated a class more in my life. The best part of this class was leaving. I will say the professor is very knowledgeable but passing his exams is borderline impossible, with no study guide. He is also not understanding at all. Unless you are the reincarnation of newton, don't take him.
If you want depression take this course otherwise I'd advise you to stay away.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! I REPEAT DO NOT!! Worst professor I've ever had unless you want to retake this class save yourself. You'll thank me later.
Extremely uncaring and doesn't provide study guides for his extremely difficult exams. Even though he is very knowledgeable, it's not worth the effort to take the class because you're gonna fail the exams regardless.
did not even give actual study guides, his study guides were literally bullet points of you should have to know NOT EVEN REAL PROBLEMS
Much harder than every other professor at Nova. He lacks engagement with students. He does not ask the class questions or interact very much, making 3 hour long lectures very difficult to stay attentive to. This class is harder than differential equations and Calc II combined.
Very nice guy but his class is hard. I would recommend you take him if you plan to transfer to a 4 year university because he teaches very similar to professors here. But his class is ALOT of work. He is very knowledgeable and smart guy.
The class is a lot of lecture but there were labs each week that were fun and easy to do and gave a nice break. Homework was online and were harder than the tests. He would usually show me how to do the problems in his office hours if I couldn't do it. I took him for PHY201 but it sucks he wasn't teaching PHY202 this semester.
I have no idea how this guy even had any 5 star reviews. Genuinely the worst professor I will probably every have in my whole life.
One of the better profs I have had since starting NOVA. His class lectures and examples are intense so don't miss class, but the tests followed the same format. Homework was a lot, but helped to study. Homework answers found online. Labs are simple because there are no reports. Just turn in group work at the end.
Wissing's lectures are informative, but the class is challenging. Stay on top of the homework and labs, as he grades meticulously. Utilize study aids like Unstuck AI to prepare for the difficult exams. With dedication, you can excel in this course.
Very informative class. He is well prepared for class. Definitely cares more than some other NOVA profs I've had in other classes. He makes the lectures interesting and tells how the physics relate to life. Homework for every chapter but it helped me understand. Labs are fun and he is always walking around to help.
Uses a lot of demonstrations and props in class to explain things. He is the only physics teacher that I would recommend. I enjoyed every class and learned a lot.
Professor is fantastic. Course has interesting topics and his class is a lot of lecture, but he does it well with clear explanations and examples. Grading is homework, labs, and tests. The homework is online and all lab work is completed the same day in class, so no after lab work. Interesting guy if you talk to him and he knows a ton of physics.
Very helpful in office hours. Make sure to take notes in class. He does a lot of example problems.
Does not interact with students in class. Does not stop to ask questions or give much of a break, he has to be interrupted for any questions. The class lengths are far too long, especially for a pure lecture. Did not implement feedback of interacting more with students.
Whole lecture is doing problems, one after the other, problems that he has written on a paper sheet that you will never get to reference it to study, there is no PowerPoint no study sheet no presentation, no textbook, no meaningful demonstrations, nothing. Always with an extremely condescending attitude.
you go to class, he talks for 3 hours with a 15 minute break and no student engagement. labs were good for me, but very challenging for others. if you do the hw and pay attention to lectures, tests should be fine, but the hw is intense and lectures get very boring very quick. it'll be ok if you take him, but find someone better if you can.
Most boring 3 hours and no student engagement during lectures, gives out homework that most times he did not teach in class. Labs were decent but the question sec. most times did not make sense. All he does is do problems on the white board and gives brief explanation of what he is discussing. Tests are hard if you don't do HW. Find better if can
If you want a serious college professor, he's the guy. He's tough but fair and I learned so much. If you attend all of his lectures and do all of the homework you will probably do well. He knows physics so well and goes through a lot of examples in class.
Physics is a hard class. That's true. But if you take what he gives you in the lectures and aren't afraid of asking questions about things you don't understand, he's a great professor. I'm currently taking him for 202 as well because he was great for me. He doesn't get upset about questions basically ever.
He's a very passionate guy when it comes to physics and doesn't hesitate to answer your questions, but MY GOD his class is hard. Between him being a picky grader, making really tricky difficult exams, and the hw sometimes taking upwards of eight hours for one assignment, you'll be putting in a part-time job's worth of time just to pass. Get ready.
He genuinely just does problems on the board for 3 hours. It's not very engaging but he's a chill dude. The labs need to be close to perfect but he grades his tests very fairly
