Uses the PC club whenever possible. Wants to see his opinons on YOUR paper.
Gardes hard, kind of hard to follow but will help you figure things out

Very hard class, cancelled classes, he is very opinionated.

Should be teaching at Alcorn St.
he is in his own world...just pretend to listen to the stuff he says to brainwash his students--also very dishevelled

Uses us and we when refering to African Americans... only wants to see his opinions on your papers... not readable handwriting
Good professor- actually makes you learn the material instead of just regurgitating it for an easy multiple choice test.
most amazing teacher i have ever had, has so much broad knowledge, if you respect a smart man and enjoy listening to one, he is the guy for it. answers your questions throughly and is very descriptive
International Relations: One of the hardest professors I have ever had. Class was an outstanding learning experience. I will take him again because it will force me into a greater understanding of the course material. You may disagree with his politics.
Did not show up for the final three days of class, including the final. Don't take him, he's a joke.
Not a good teacher.
do not take this man for a class. very unorganized. his grading system is unclear. total waste of my time and my money.
Mean prof. Came into the class expecting everyone to know as much as him. Never really answered questions.
Worst professor I ever had. A very unorganized individual.
Hes very hard but you learn sooo moch information from him. Key word is LEARN...not reme, ber for a test and forget the next day. Awesome teacher and class!
Probably the worst prof I've ever had. Avoid his classes at all cost, or it'll cost you either in the GPA or wasted money. I wrote two fairly well done essays and he flat out failed them.
the absolute WORST teacher EVER. did not teach and expected everyone to know what the h*ll he was talking about. it will either kill your gpa or make you lose money by dropping it. STAY FAR FAR AWAY
horrible...you watch movies and he never has anything prepared for class. very strong political ideas, you may feel uncomfortable because he plays it on you so hard. not a good class, grading system is off the wall, avoid.
I am not doing so good in class because it is too damn tough.

Horrible!!! He gets personal satisfaction out of failing people and has absolutely no idea how to relate to others. It would be an insult to every other teacher to refer to him as one.
He is very unorganized and really doesn't teach anything. He is a african newspaper telling us facts. Test were unusual but I am doing fine, because I like politics. If you have a high tolerance for rants about politics then take it, but if not then no
Unorganized, likes to throw out a bunch of names and expects you to know them. Uses terminology he expects you to know but you don't because he thinks you should be as advanced as him. Kind of reminds me of Samuel L. Jackson...but not nearly as cool-AVOID
He either deliberately expects students to be responsible for the material. or is very lazy and tries to hide it. When you are being polite without to much demand on his time, he is available. Otherwise he is unavail. Grades are not assigned FAIRLY.
Probably the worst prof that I had at CMU. He needed to teach more and make the reading more accessible.
Nice and intersting guy, knows his stuff. If you don't understand him then you're just thick!
He's not Samuel L Jackson, he's Furious from Boys N The Hood!
Very unorganized, but knows his stuff. Likes to give take home essy exams that destroy your chances of getting anything else done over the weekend. Make sure you buy the books for the class, the essay exams are straight from them,
Terrible. Please avoid this class. I had to drop it, couldn't stand listening to him. Bashes people/ideas that are not 100% pro African American. Came of as a **** to me. Doesn't teach, just writes stuff on the board.

Not a good class to take, professor has his views and has no tolerance for the beliefs of others. I found myself offended by a lot of the things he said, he is very biased. Not helpful at all, and does a lot of white bashing. Dont take this class.

Easily the best PSC prof at CMU. Extremely challenging, but his classes are very rewarding. If you can't handle being challenged by a strong, opinionated black man, you better go elsewhere.
Sterling is lazy, unorganized, and not nearly as smart as he tries to fool you into believing. It's really not that hard if you write him pages and pages of **** for every essay. He has no concept of objectitivy and will force his views. AVOID.
A college class room shouldn't resemble a Black Panthers meetings, nor do I have respect for someone who presents hatred towards any contrasting view point. If you believe learning should consist of weighing differing viewpoints, do not take this class.
Very ****. The only class I got a C in during my whole college days. There was a baseball player who sat next to me who didn't come to the end and got a better grade than me.

Doesn't really care what anyone else thinks. He is one of the most hateful and **** people I have ever encountered. Also, in his "books" that he "wrote" found many plagarized occurrences. College teaches Academic Integrity yet employs a man who plagarized his books. Gives PHD's a bad name.
No order to his class. There is no way to tell when tests or anything else will happen. He is single minded and doesnt listen to anything students say.

johnson is the man...who cares about political opinion look past it or make your self strive to be smarter than him in what you think...been all over the world and smart as hell...i respect him and the black panther comments are stupid although id be on his side
Dr. Johnson is an amazing teacher. His assistant on the other hand is the complete downfall of academia. She is the reason why many people don't like the class. Sterling is a charming smart man. His is a brown-nose, myopic, know it all person. And you what is sad? She wants to teach a class one day!
Dr. Johnson is a great person. His teaching methods are very undesirable. He's very eradict. No structure. He expects you to learn everything from the reading and have discusions in class. The only problem is that the books we read from are f****ing hard to follow.
Not Helpful
If you like extremely hard exams, unclear lectures, and no willingness to help students, than this is the prof for you. Dont even think of emailing him cuz he wont repsond. He is very arrogant, cnyical and the biggest left-wing extreme liberal you'll ever meet. Dont take his classes EVER!
This guy has no desire to help you. If you aren't an expert in this subject he has no interest in you are helping you. i've gone to class everyday, done all the reading and still have no idea what he talks about. He jumps around so fast, it is too hard to keep up. Save your grade and don't take him
Sterling Johnson is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life, he is at some times offensive to certain groups of people and I wouldn't take this class. If at all possible take it with someone else cuz you dont want to deal with this guy.
Everyone below seems to enjoy being spoonfed at college rather than learning for themselves. Dr. Johnson is a great guy and has alot of passion for his subject. This is what matters in a professor. Take his class and you'll agree(unless you are a whiner like those below).
Dr. Johnson is definitely a difficult professor, but like the person below said, if you want to learn instead of have info fed to you, you'll like him. He's arguably the most knowledge in the department, easily the most real world experience, too. Take him if you want to learn, otherwise dodge him.
Dr. Johnson lives up to the left-wing stereotype of college professors. He is very unprofessional and attempts to dump his liberal values on you. However, if you can block out his extreme liberal bias, he is a very knowledgeable professor and knows his stuff
excellant
Dr. Johnson is one the best professor i have ever had a class with. He is very intelligence and knowledgeable person to take a class with. He is the only american professor who is really very knowledgeable in American foreign policy. But if you don't want to learn, then don't waste your time taking a class with him.

For someone so obsessed about the negative impact of structural abuse and inhumanities, he certainly enjoys subjecting his students to it.
Professor Sterling has that rare mix of wordly intelleigence coupled with academic knowledge that makes his a really interesting class to go to. Like mentioned in other critiques...if you're lazy and ignorant..you shouls avoid his class. Otherwise, you'll gain alot from him as a professor.
Is growing more radical with age. Called a girl **** in a forum simply b/c she said she doesn't agree with Affirmative Action. Most knowledgeable person I've ever met, but also horribly closeminded as well. If you try to pass anything even remotely moderate, he'll either try and make an ass out of you or ignore you. He's also horribly unclear and gives long, meandering lectures that never relate to the syllabus.
I believe Dr. Johnson has such a low rating becuase of his teaching style, he is unorganized, but helpful. Most people do not like to hear the brutal truth either, but Johnson will give it to you. You have to do much of the work on your own, the test are mostly take home LOTS OF READING.good prep for whats ahead WRITE MORE THEN HE ASKS GET A EZ A
The stereotypical left-wing professor. If you want to take a class on Bush bashing and learn what a horrible country you live in, take Dr. Johnson. His anti-American attitude is very disturbing.
Dr. Johnson was my mentor during classes at CMU and I enjoyed both his teachings and opinions
If you are interested in getting a perspective on the world from someone who has probably the most diverse backround at CMU take Dr. Johnsons (State dept t Black panthers) If you are a partisian hack ie. love either BUSH or KERRY no matter what ne1 says, then you might wanna pass, if you have an open mind and enojy learning bout the world, take him
Really great teacher! Tough class but you will learn alot. Sterling has more practical knowledge than the rest of the department combined!
Dr. Johnson is a very smart individual. You'll learn so much about life and politics in his class. He is also very helpful and will explain anything to you if you really don't understand.Take his class!!! All you have to do is read and come to class.
dr. johnson expects a lot from his students in terms of reading and writing assignments. he also has little tolerance for apathy and inattentiveness during his lectures. that being said, PSC 125 was probably one of the most enlightening courses that i have taken at CMU, and i would recommend it to anyone interested in politics or social justice.
All I can say is, if you have your CR/NC option available, USE IT! This class is not worth busting ass for because you won't get an "A" anyway. Professor personally informed me through e-mail when I disputed my grade that the course was designed so "everyone gets a B". Also, he assigns long essays that don't have anything to do with lecture. UGGGH!
Dr. J is a real smart dude but not a good teaher. He is very educated on the topics that he is teaching about but does not teach them in an effective way. His class consists of boring lectures and videos everyday. Also all essay exams that are somewhat irrelevant to alot of the material covered in class. No review, No study guide. No Nothin!
DO NOT take this class. Yeah it's interesting, but the layout of the course makes it impossible to get a decent grade. You only get a few tests and they're essays only. The subject matter covered in class is never on the test. Save your GPA and avoid this class.
Had him for African American Politics. W/o a doubt the most intelligent professor I had in 5 years at CMU. I agree with whoever said take his classes CR/NO if you are concerned with grades. Your grade might not reflect it, but you'll learn more from this man than any other professor, bar none. Would take a class for fun to have him as a prof again.

i think he needs to be fired. hes the most unorganized teacher ever. if you like structure, dont take him. he puts notes all over the board that have nothing to do with anything. hes very opinionated which is sometimes annoying. you'll watch movies almost everyday..NOT good ones. for a UP its WAY too hard and i do not recommend it for ANYONE!
He is an extremely funny guy. Always has me laughing. Although, his handwriting is rather difficult to read!
I am in the process of taking an online class of his, and wow, it's terrible. He assigns his own book (at 130 bucks) for the class, and no one apparently proof-read the text. There are errors all over it. It's blatantly biased and he makes no attempt to hear the other side of things. Not to mention the course is extremely unorganized.
I took him for international relations and american foreign policy in the same semester (03). Agree with a lot of comments. Smart guy, but it is not well organized, and the correlation between the lectures and the exams is not very strong. Get ready for a heavy dose of left-wing propaganda. He wore a Che shirt to class for crying out loud.
I took him for 351,340,555,and 453!He may be biased, but who isn't. If you expect to be spoon fed, then don't take the class, but if you have a brain and want to learn something, its great, you learn now to read real academic material, take good notes and find the relevance of material on your own! People are mad because they are lazy and stupid!
If you enjoy exams that bring you to tears than take Dr.Johnson, he may have experience but his experience will not help you on his exams...at all. SOOOO disorganized and his notes are completely irrelevant. You watch a lot of dateline, which is interesting but not helpful in the class at all...good luck
Honestly, he gets a bad wrap from some people. He's amazingly smart, that can't be argued. This class makes you work hard. Sometimes he expects the class to know as much as him and that makes it a little confusing. There is no doubt you'll learn a lot. Study hard and make extra effort to learn the material and you'll get a lot out of this class.
This class interesting however I would take it w/ another prof. Johnson is extremely unorganized & rude. He sends exams w/ wrong due dates, the exams contain information that is not available in the text & he is impossible to communicate w/.
He is great teacher. In class exams were very tough no lie. But He gives you a take home portion worth more than the in class. Really good prof ya'll, I reccomend him
This was the worst professor I have had at CMU! I have had several law and polysci profs in my program and by far he is the most difficult to work with. I am an A student with my undergrad from CMU and now doing a Masters program where I am also an A student. His class is impossible and his standards are unreasonable. Do not take this class.
Most unprofessional professor I have ever had. Instead of presenting both sides of an argument, he just gives you his Anti-American, Bush bashing propaganda and tells you that you are stupid if you dont agree him. If you like to here about what an awful country you live in, you will certainly enjoy his class.
When I had him in class,he acted like we couldn't possibly understand the lives or perspectives of others,so he didn't really ever teach it.He kept marking me ab, though I turned in all of my work, becuase he had me confused with another student with the same 1st name...we LOOKED nothing alike (white & asian) So glad he took time to get to know us
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The notes are useless. The exams are sooo hard! They are all essay. He hands out drop slips after the first exam. Just save your GPA and don't take this class.
I thought that Dr. Johnson was an incredible instructor. yes, his exams are tough because they are all essay. yes, he puts a lot of crazy notes on the board. but he was incredibly knowledgeable on the subject matter (the civil rights movement) and his class was interesting, and actually made you learn something.
dont ask stupid questions and you better know your stuff. he will embarrass you if you dont pay attention or if you do bad on a test. if your up to a challenge take him, he will force you to know the material. if your lookin for a blow off class in any way, he is not the guy.
If you aren't ready to read like crazy, take notes like crazy, and then memorize it all, don't take him. He's extremely knowledgable and loves to be challenged by students, just be prepaired to have you're head ripped off if you don't know you're stuff.
PSC is my major and is very interesting to me, however, this class was very difficult. His lectures are all over the place. Basically just watch a documentary the entire 16 weeks. A lot of reading that you must do. Exams are all essay and very difficult. If not a major, may want to take a different professor! And I got an A- in the class.
he is intimidating, and i think he likes that fact. his tests are really scary, i actually got a 45% on one, but in the end, my final grade was an A- so i think he must have a magical curve in place. the class is informative but i did think i was going to fail the whole time. he is a jerk, but cool. go to class, i think the grades are subjective.
You could save the tuition money and just read the books because he does not do one iota of real teaching. In fact, the class would be easier if all you had to do was read the books but instead you get to listen to his unorganized, incomprehensible, rants that i laughingly refer to as lecture. He should have kept working for the government.
His African American studies class is a nightmare. He is not nice at all. He likes to embarass students. I came to class one day on a friday and he actually made fun of a student because he is white and had a hip hop detroit hat on since he is from detroit. He is just rude all together and his tests are ridiculous and his papers are too.
his class was definitely not easy, but was incredibly interesting. he is very knowledgeable on the subject, but very opinionated. tests are essays and tricky because he gives you names, concepts, and events and expects you to include as many as possible in your writing. he's tough, but you'll learn a lot
Professor's syllabus was unorganized, changed during the term, and included conflicting grade scales. He also exhibited a certain inability to explain requirements and made statements changing requirements, then went back on them later, sending out deadlines that conflicted with his first and second decisions.
Worst class out of all classes taken at CMU.
do not take this class whatever you do..cant even read his handwriting off the board..tests are impossible 3 essays 33 points each..i had to withdrawal or my gpa would have been screwed
The worst teacher i have ever had. He owes me a grand cuz i had to drop out because its so hard. All essay question tests which are impossible to pass. Dont bother taking unless u wanna fail. Btw he looks exactly like Samuel L. Jackson if that interests u at all lol.
EASY A. HAS LECTURES AND A LOT OF NOTES TO WRITE IN CLASS. BUT ALL ESSAYS ARE TAKE HOME, EVEN THE FINAL. 3 QUESTIONS WORTH 33 POINTS EACH. HE SAYS A MINIMUM OF 4-5 PAGES DOUBLE SPACE IS WHAT HE WANTS SO JUST WRITE A 10 PAGE PAPER AND YOU HAVE A GUARENTEED A. THE BEST TEACHER, SO COOL, NO HOMEWORK! SO EASY. THE BEST CLASS AND YOU LEARN SO MUCH!
Dr.Johnson wants you to use your brain and show up for class. The take home tests are challenging, but if you put in reasonable effort and dont drop the class you will be fine. Also stop by his office if you need help, he will give you pointers. Nice guy, but his classes are not a cake walk... -DJ
Dr. Johnson knows his work and wants his students to as well. If you are not interested in history or politics, this class may not be for you. He doesn't give homework and the exams are difficult. Don't let that defer you though, he grades on personal and mental growth. If you attend class and participate, you can get an A or B.
Fantastic professor. Passionate...It helps to keep an open mind, and listen. He gives interesting perspectives with some coming from his first hand accounts. Interesting topics frequently got started adhoc. If you are going to take a position on a subject be prepared to be challenged on it. If you are an avid Zinn reader you'll like Dr. Johnson.
Not as bad as people make him out to be, as long as you show up and pay attention to lectures you should be fine.
Horrible teacher, could not follow his teaching style. Grades very hard. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES...... WARNING
It is too hard for me. The class just like a joke. This teacher only read power points in class and find some clips from youtube. There were three test in the whole semester. four questions for each test and you need to write 700-1000 words for each question. the questions are hard for the students who are not major in law.
One of the hardest and most confusing classes have ever taken! DON'T take this guy if you can avoid it. Tests are imposable unless u love politics or are one of his favorites. Thought it would be an good class to fill a UP credit and i was WRONG! Almost half the class dropped. The guy makes you feel dumb if you don't agree with his views.RUN!
DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF. I have been an excellent student with at least a 3.5 and I'm a senior now. NOTHING about this class makes sense. Unless you already know about PSC, you're screwed. He'll give you a new (bitter) perspective. He also seems to enjoy embarrassing students and passing out withdrawal request forms with graded exams. Just. No.
The worst teacher I've ever had. I used to pray I'd get hit by a car or something so I could die instead of seeing Johnson. The. Actual. Worst. AVOID IT!
This class could be SO AWESOME. But avoid this professor at all costs. If you enjoy paying upwards of $300/credit hour to watch hour-long Frontline videos for every class and hear him rant about how much America sucks, this is your guy. If you're planning on learning or succeeding, do yourself a favor and take 351 (or whatever) with someone else.
It wasn't a hard class, but definitely take notes and at least skim over the reading material!! Most of the time I ignored what he "taught" since all he would do was give his opinion on everything (which usually made no sense) and embarrass people. Only 5 or 6 other students showed up to class out of 53 seats available.
I think he is a nice man, but this class was awful. We watched movies everyday. He would write random terms on the board during the movie. Then expect you to know them all when he turned the lights on. Also, you're graded on three exams are take home essays. 4-5 essays varying in 300-500 to 1,500-1,750 words each and exam only totals to 100 points.
Dr. Johnson is incredibly interesting, and I learned so much about the Civil Rights Movement that I didn't know beforehand. With that said, the structure of the class is a little disheartening. He never posts grades on Blackboard, and you watch documentaries everyday. The exams are straight take home essays, which aren't easy.
Class consisted of watching videos EVERY DAY. He goes on rants that are interesting sometimes. The tests are huge take-home essay questions but if you incorporate all of the terms he lists with each question, you should get an OK grade. He's a very interesting guy but I could have learned as much about the Civil Rights Movement from my couch.
I've taken 4 classes in Political Science under Dr Johnson. He's tough as nails but requires you to think and explain. He's not easy and shouldn't be. I'm a conservative and couldn't respect him more for the quality teaching he provides CMU students.
Johnson never posted grades on Blackboard and he always made us do debates. I never really knew what to expect grading wise from him. I always came to class, listened to his lectures, watched the videos and did my homework. His take home exams were really long too. I ended up with an A in the class, which was crazy.
Dr. Johnson is the best professor I have had! Yes, he's a little scatterbrained and if you are a big notetaker he might frustrate you, but you will learn so much in this class and from him. Exams are take-home essays but require a lot of work. You must read (or at least skim) the textbooks/readings for the class to keep up.
Dr. Johnson is well-versed in his field of study. However, his lectures do not pertain to a lot exam content. Most of the actual course content has to be learned through reading the text books. The class is also extremely paper heavy. He gives an adequate amount of time to write the papers, but they are very lengthy and require a lot of research.
Professor Johnson is really nice guy, however he should not be teaching. His lectures were very unclear, and mostly consisted of rants about how awful America is. His exams are take home, however you are required to write three to four essays each of 1500-2000 words. He is very unclear about his grading criteria. Also he does not update Blackboard!
Dr. Johnson is a very intelligent person who is well versed in poli sci and international relations. However, I am convinced that he doesnt know how to use a computer. Rarely replied to emails, 1 sentence replies to emails, 1 sentence feedback on discussion boards, we basically had to teach ourselves.
Dr. Johnson gets a lot of bad reviews but he is actually a great professor! He is really passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. It's true that his lectures are scattered and sometimes hard to follow but if you put in a little effort and some thought you'll do just fine in the class!
Dr. Johnson is nice but should not be teaching. He seems like he has a lot of knowledge but all we do is watch videos every single day. He rarely responds to emails, even on days before exams are due, and when he does it's one word responses and doesn't answer questions. Very unclear grading criteria and presentation. Also he doesnt use blackboard.
This professor taught almost nothing. We would watch a movie every single day in class, and none of it was ever on the exams. I have had bad professors before, but no one even comes close to this level of bad. I would not recommend his courses to anyone.
He's not necessarily a bad professor-- he's just incredibly strict in his expectations and tends to be hypocritical. He expects students to put in a lot more work than he does. He's smart and challenges you, but the class could be taught much better than it is.
He obviously knew a lot about political science, but I found his lectures very difficult to follow. He never updated grades on Blackboard, so I never knew where I stood in the class. He was also very unorganized, and once taught the wrong lecture to our class. Wouldn't take again.
Professor Johnson is easily the worst professor I've had so far at CMU. His essay prompts give absolutely no guidelines or specific instructions. His lectures tend to be rambles about things unrelated to what we're actually supposed to be learning. He's a smart guy, and clearly very passionate about politics. But his class is an unstructured mess.
Exams are the only points really in the class. Each exam is 12+ pages written if taken home or if in class there are three essays to respond to. Prepare for exams as they are the only thing that matters. Include the 20+ key points for each essay prompt or you wont pass. He does on rants that dont make sense. This class deserves a better prof.
Very unorganized and is not clear on expectations. The class is not a WI and I have already written 9 essays (it's only week 10). He is very nice, but does not always stick to what he says. For example, he made an extra credit essay a real assignment without even telling us. Maybe he'll be better since this was his first year with this section.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! Lectures are so off topic and irrelevant there is no point listening to them. You watch videos every class that are also very pointless. The only assignments are 3-4 essays and he didn't even put my scores into Blackboard so I wasted my time even doing them. He never uses Blackboard or answers emails so good luck passing :)
He is the absolute worst. The videos and lectures are a waste of time so just do yourself a favor and drop out. He never puts in grades so you'll likely fail anyways. The essays are on topics never discussed in class so you have to put in SO MUCH work and teach yourself just to never get a grade back. Take the class with someone else!!!!
Hes nice but the class was so unorganized and I could barely hear what he was saying. He is passionate about what hes teaching, but its near impossible to type notes as he switches the slides every 2 seconds. At that point youre teaching yourself everything when it comes time to type the exam essays for that class. Not a fan.
Dr. Johnson is an excellent lecture and he is very inspiring to listen to. HOWEVER, his class was run very chaotically and none of the assignments have been very clear. The lectures never went along with the discussion boards and are way too long to be just a regular course. This class made me realize that I don't actually want to study poli. sci.
Sterling Johnson at times was interactive with students during lecture, but this is rare. You could honestly not go to any lectures and pass the class easy with an A. There were only two essay assignments that were based on incorporating the vocabulary terms. My advice: go the first day and find some people to make a group chat
