has a tendency to lose focus. his lectures tend to drag. class structure is lacking. lecture notes are difficult to take at times, overhead materials he uses are little to no help.
by far the best psych professor... ever
Steve is a great professor and is very good at relating and understanding his students. His lectures are good and sometimes he can be very funny. Tests are fair and so are the assignments. Highly recommended.
Lectures are boring, covers material really slowly, attendance not required but gives random in class assignments, multiple choice tests, hard to get an A, nice guy
great professor, funny, understanding, and all around nice guy
this guy is great. he's a good teacher, and throws out the lowest test score. really nice guy, and really helpful.
No attendance policy, which is great, but you pay for it when test time comes around...difficult tests...very likeable guy, answers his e.mails promptly...oh and i gave him a "hot"...i think its his eyes and that cute lil goetee...mmmmmm
Teacher is professional, efficent and makes difficult material easy to understand, I highly recommend this professor.
Ive had him for 2 classes now--luv him he's great. If you just go to class, listen, read some you will do good. I think Ive never met a nicer person.
This was an awesome class! Alley's lectures are interesting and clear, and you'll be well prepared for the exams if you show up to class and take good notes.
awesome teacher, awesome person
kind,intelligent,caring,intuitive,intriguing-and very handsome...the perfect man
He's very sweet and eager to help!

I LOVE ALLEY!!!!!!!!
Great teacher, and love his passion to teach

He has passion for what he teaches and that sucks you in to learning with him. Yet, he is scatterd at times or losses his own focus on his personal life and kids. I don't pay tution to hear about his family problems.
He babbles wayyyy too much. I got bored listening to his chatter. Just teach the class.

Lectures aren't always exciting, but he makes sure you understand the material. If you show up to class and pay attention to the lectures, you can get away with not reading much of the books and get an A easy. Very amicable personality. I highly reccomend

Alley is a passionate and dedicated teacher AND person. His lectures are very interesting and informative. His tests are fair and clear-everything is on the study guides. He knows all the material and studies. He really cares about all his students and uses everyday examples to get his points across. Go Alley!!! He's great to look at too...

Dude is pretty cool...
Amazing lecturer. I Highly recommend Steve Alley. He is so good that I have taken all the classes he teaches at UNM just for personal growth and fun.
Great guy. Never makes you feel bad for asking questions. Great story teller. Funny
Steve cares that you "get it". Sometimes it takes him a bit to get jumped started into the lecture. His lectures can be boring..but for me it's becasue the class size is to big and my mind wanders off and I lose focus. Read the chapters before class...it allows you to focus during the lec...and have a frame of reference..
He's an award winning teacher who is tough, fair, compassionate, funny, passionate about teaching and caring about his students' learning. Best college prof I've had; I plan to take his other classes just because of who he is and how he teaches. Great to talk to in his office, too!
Amazing teacher! He knows what he is talking about; but, unlike a lot of other profs he really cares about what he is talking about as well.
Great teacher and I thought his fusion of personal experiences are one of his classes best qualities.
Fantastic teacher. One of the best here at UNM. He is very motivational, and his earnest caring of his students progress really shows in all aspects of his teaching. I have not found a better Psych teacher, or a better teacher for that matter yet.
I've had Alley several times. Eveyone seems really gungho over him. He's nice and his lectures are interesting....but I don't really care for how he structures his class. I found the reviews to not really link up well with the exams....also, because he teaches a million classes a semester, he never checks email..
I dont know why people like Professor Alley. His lreviews dont help for tests. he waste class time with annoying stories that don't help you learn. I really didnt learn anything in his class. the last month i stopped going to the class and just studied his slides and the book. I did just fine without the lecture.
Steve is an awesome teacher! He is so helpful and his office hours are always open to students with questions. He knows the subject matter from his own experiance and makes the lectures entertaining! I would highly recommend this teacher to anyone wanting to learn the subject and have fun at the same time!
Steve's class are all the same, if you know the lecture material you will do well. I just studied the slides from WebCT and did very well in the class. He is very entertaining, but can ramble.
I had Steve for the FLC with Public Speaking. It was not a traditional class, but he worked through it with us to make it work well. Explains things very well and in serious detail, tests and quizzes are challenging but force you to study. He is very interested in his subject and passionate about teaching it. Always willing to help.
Steve is a great professor. He is very entertaining and makes the subject matter fun. I took several classes with him and he will always be my favorite professor.
Intersting and clear, and funny!
Steve is an awesome teacher! He really cares about his students. Assignments are interesting and tests are pretty easy if you go to class. Highly reccommended!
This class was by far my favorite. Homework was fun and easy. Expect to learn a lot about yourself in this class! Tests were easy for me, and I usually just read the book and looked over his outline. Class isn't boring, and he cracks a lot of jokes.
Steve is a great teacher. I had a lot of fun taking this class. The test were a bit tough but not extremely difficult. You can ask him anyhting, he is very personable and approachable both in class and for his office hours.
He give you study guides for the chapters and for the tests. In order to do well you should show up because he lectures and tests on things that are not in the text.
I asked for repeated help from this Professor (has a Masters, not a PhD)and was repeatedly ignored. I'm not an idiot and will outwork most others for my grades, which are earned, and all A's. Bitter, yes I am.He tried to lower my GPA and he knows it. He failed, I still have a 4.06, recommend others think twice. Wish I had known his attitude b/4hand.
Not sure what drugs most of these students are on but found this teacher to be extremely pompous and full of himself. Borrrinnngggggg.
Psych 331 was the only psychology course I took at UNM and it was amazing! Prof. Alley was extremely clear in his teachings, direct in what he expected of his students and on top of it all, hysterically funny with all the jokes and stories he introduced to clarify concepts. Highly recommend his courses!
I have taken professor Alley for 3 classes and loved everyone of them. He is a fantastic teacher, very engaged, and excellent lectures. Loved it!!!
Super awesome, cares about your personal life, will make exceptions.
He is a great guy and is a cool professor. However I find his lectures fairly boring and his tests are moderately to highly difficult. But I would still recommend him if you are motivated to go to class and study hard.
Steve is always available it seems and is willing to work with students to help them get a passing grade. His class is not hard, however you should attend the lectures. He has a love of the subject which is a relief to find in a teacher.
boring
awful class. lectures are a waste of time. test questions are long and confusing. inaccesiable prof, never responded to emails. ta is a joke. all you do for hw assignements is take personality tests and talk about yourself. i tried all semester to figure out why people like this guy
You'll either love him or hate him. I found him to be arrogant and smarmy, and spent most of my time in his class trying to figure out how he got such high ratings from here. His tests are wordy and confusing intentionally, the HW assignments are worthless, his TA might as well not existed and he's impossible to get in touch with. Glad I'm out.
Alley was by far my favorite teacher at UNM. He always had time to help his students and always made lectures interesting. His classes are challenging but if you can handle doing the work and are not a complete slacker you should do well.
Alley is an amazing professor, who really knows his subject and is there when you need him. His homework assignments are fun and really help you learn not only about the subject it covers but also about yourself, which is important for a personality class. He is one of my favorite professors at UNM.
I completly agree with the posting on 5/18. His tests are extremly wordy and confusing, and by the time you finish reading the paragraph long question, all the answers seem to be right! He doesnt provide adequate slides, they are more like his "notes". Hw is crap, just talking about yourself, is NOT learning about personality.
not a horrible professor, but not the best.Class was boring & useless. HW too. Exams were hard & lengthy & the study guides have nothing to do with the exams! He trys to be funny to keep you interested, nice try. Talks bad about his family every chance he gets! I would avoid him if possible.
BLAHHHHHHHHH! AWFUL teacher!
Alley seems like a really nice guy, he really does. But that does not make a good professor or good class. Test q's are really confusing, and does not explain the concept of something thoroughly, so when you get to the test, you are F***ed! Might as well teach yourslef this stuff because he wont. The hw mostly cares about "your feelings" EWWW
In my opinion, one of the best professors at UNM. He genuinely cares about students, and if you go to class and read the material the tests are not hard! His lectures are thoughtful and I loved going to class. Although the previous comments are a bit harsh, I believe that they are skewed. Try out one of his classes and you will see.
His lectures are interesting and fun, I always enjoyed going to class. Exams are relatively hard and require you read the course material and attend lectures. He genuinely cares for his students and is always available for extra help. One of my favorite teachers in the department.
Professor Alley is one of the few professors at UNM who genuinely cares about his students and challenging everyone to achieve his/her potential. His tests are challenging;incorporating class notes and relative concepts from the book but with hard work and dropping by his office hours to clear up some of the ideas, it is a very rewarding class.
Took 271 and 331 with him and LOVED it. Wish he taught more classes. I don't think I've learned as much any other year than with his classes. Very helpful, very interesting and honestly cares about his students. You won't find another like him. He made my college career.
Was excited to take social psych with him since I heard he was really good. I wasn't impressed as much. He went off on tangents too much and spent a majority of class time on useless catch up stuff that wasn't needed for those who attended class. He is a nice caring prof though. He just wasn't my cup of tea in his teaching style.
Steve Alley is one of my favorite instructors in the psych department. He's funny, engaging, and really knows what he's talking about. He really cares about his students, and is really forgiving and understanding in personal situations. He deeply encourages students to attend class, and also loves to see students in his office hours.
Totally great guy, always takes the time to help his students.
I love going to Steve's class. He's so entertaining to listen to! He gives great examples that really help you relate to (and remember!) the material. I highly recommend him.
truly entertaining, though tests and explanations can be convoluted, overall a great guy
Professor Alley is an amazing teacher and mentor. He teaches four large classes and he will always take time to email you or see you in his office. He really has a passion for what he teaches and he makes that evident every single class. He expects the best from his students and with sucha great teacher you feel like giving it your best!
I have had Prof. Alley for two classes and he was absolutely amazing!! His passion for psychology is contagious with his lectures...and I can't even focus in lectures usually. Love him! wished he taught more classes!
Wow... not much you can say about this instructor but: EXCELLENT... Even though psychology is not my major I do have to say Steve's class was one of the best that I have taken, and best of all fun too. Do not miss the chance to take a course with this man if you have the opportunity to do so!
This class was so boring and i felt like i wasted my time listening to his lame stories. His grading is VERY subjective and if you write something he disagrees with then you'll get a low grade. I won't be taking another class with this guy.
This professor is extremely subjective and cares more about talking about himself and his bleeding heart stories. I changed my major from psychology to business because this guy made me hate it that much.
I learned a great deal. He expects his students to do well. He is more motivational than most teachers usually giving a little pep talk before he begins his lecture, he cares about his students. As long as you read the book the tests should be a breeze. I felt comfortable with how he graded. taking him again next semester
He is an inspirational teacher, his passion for the subject matter is infectious.
Believe the hype about Steve! He truly is a remarkable teacher. He teaches with such passion and he genuinely wants his students to learn and to pass his classes, though you must put the effort into learning the material as well.
An amazing teacher, and a true friend. I will be keeping in contact with him for as long as possible.
Steve is the best teacher in the WORLD. He is always helping his students out...If you need help, steve will ALWAYS be there for you no matter what. After the first class with him you will want to go back to his next course! Thank you for everything steve!
He is a great teacher!!!! It is not a dificult class but as long as you keep up with the material as much as possible you can get a good grade.
Professor Alley wastes a majority of class time trying to impose his forced optimism and trite philosophies on his class. He tries too desperately to "bond" with his students, relying on stereotypes and generalizations. His Social Psych course has all the nauseating awkwardness of a bad support group meeting.
This is the second semester I've had Steve. He's a really good professor. Very nice. He makes his lectures very interesting, as well, and always had a little story. His tests can be rather difficult if you don't keep up with readings and lectures, but other than, I highly recommend him.
I retract what I had previously said on 11/8/09 about Professor Alley...This is my 2nd time taking him and he is truly a genuinely nice person. His personality type is rare, so it seems fake initially, but he is a great professor and really cares about his students. Take him if you have the ability to do so and you won't regret it. Keep it up Steve
Steve was a great professor who was genuinely interested in his students and has a passion for his area of teaching. He took extra care and attention for students like me who have high test anxiety and need a small, quieter environment in which to test. He helped me through some personal problems. He is more on the same level of students.
This professor is really nice. He helps you a lot if you are in need and he is very approachable.
Steve really wants you to take something from this class and enjoys teaching. Go to class and take notes and you will do well on the exams. At times it feels as if he gets off topic and I would find myself somewhat bored. Overall easy enough class.
Such a nice guy! If you keep up with the readings and the homework you will do fine! He really tries to relate to students and keep them engaged in the lecture. He also understands if you need to miss class and rewards the people who attend regularly. I like him so much, I'm taking him AGAIN. Keep it up Steve.
He is a wonderful guy and fun teacher, just make sure that doesn't fool you into thinking you can coast through the semester. He doesn't take attendance but I would definitely recommend going to class and studying a good amount.
I LOVED Steve! He is super approachable and made the class fun with his entertaining personal stories. He makes the course work easier because he relates everything to your life. I chose psychology as a minor because of him!
great teacher great guy makes material easy to understand fair grader and always willing to help one of the best teachers I've ever had highly recommended him!
He is a great professor. He explains things in a way that makes it very easy to understand concepts. He is extremely helpful if you are ever confused and he will not stop until your question is fully answered and you understand.
I do not know what is so great about him! I could not stand his lectures and went to class twice and still got a good grade...
This was my second time with Steve as a professor and, again, I loved the class! Lectures are very interesting. Once in awhile he'll go off on a tangent, but it's only because he gets so involved in what he teaches. I highly recommend taking him. He's approachable and gives clear explanations, and genuinely cares about his students. :)
Steve truly has a passion for psychology. His passion is what makes his psychology course so interesting. Going to class is extra credit and all the lecture outlines can be accessed online which is nice. If you read he chapters the tests are cake. I enjoyed his class very much!
Steve is amazing! He knows what he is talking about and he always makes everything interesting. He is a wonderful person in general and his classes are fantastic. My major is psychology and some teachers are so dry, Steve is my favorite UNM teacher!
My favorite psychology professor. Friendly, engaging and totally helpful. His social psychology class is very interesting and enjoyable to attend!
I do not understand all of the positive reviews. Mr. Alley frequently goes on long tangents not connected to subject material. Most of class time is wasted. There is no set schedule to manage time by, requiring constant attention to webct for info. We're expected to know info not covered. Many chapter tests and assignments. My worst psychology exp.
Steve is exclusively a lecturing professor, which means he has more time for his students. He is very helpful and kind, though classroom lectures tend to include many personal anecdotes. I find his teaching style relaxed and real.
He is the best professor I've had! He is very friendly and kind, and you can definitely tell that he has a true passion for psychology. He also seems very down to earth and keeps the class fun and interesting. He has definitely deepened my interest in the subject. Overall, I would definitely recommend him.
hes awesome! amazing lecturer, psych is my major and hes made me love it even more! im taking every class possible with him in the future.
Stephen is awesome! He is such a nice, down-to-earth, and humble professor. You can tell he truly cares about his students. Attendance isn't required but I always go to class because I actually enjoy being there. I wouldn't say the class is easy but if you go and pay attention and make sure you understand all the concepts you should do great!!!
Steve is great at explaining everything in comprehensible and original ways. His class is fun, you don't have to attend, but I recommend it.
Wastes most of the time at the beginning of class talking about nonsense. Super boring to listen to, I had to force myself to go just for the extra credit clicker questions. You can just read the book and pass the class easily. Final test is optional as is attendance.
He makes it easy to pass. Online quizzes, writing assignment and four tests are all pretty easy just time consuming. He lectures are fun with lots of youtube videos. He's so nice to talk to you after class.
He is awesome. So funny and class is fun with him. He explains things in a clear and interesting way. Definatly take a class with him.
Guy is super cool and helpful. The class can be hard at times all about paying attention. Attendance is important you get clicker points and lecture involves some test questions
Steve is my favorite professor I have EVER had! Take any possible class you can with him. Without him, I would not be as happy about majoring in psychology.
Super awesome professor. His lectures are always fun, he uses you tube videos to make specific points or give examples. Uses real life examples. Reading chapters, which aren't too long and taking chapter tests is very helpful and keeps you on track. Clicker questions in class are extra credit. Study guides are helpful as well.
He can be funny at times but tends to get off topic and drones on sometimes. Overall the class was ok. The assignments are interesting, but long and some of the test questions can be worded funky
goes on tangents not related to subject. often unclear. I will not be taking another psych class from him even though I heard great things about him prior to taking the class. tests are MUCH HARDER than online work and what we talk about in class!
Wonderful teacher! Interesting, funny, and knows the material VERY well. Very helpful and understanding.
His class is a lot of work, but overall I enjoyed it
I've had him for 3 classes now, his lectures are nearly impossible to not enjoy. He will do everything in his power to help you out, and is always available. Some topics can be difficult but he gives you many different perspectives and sources. Information you will recieve is not just read from some book, he knows the information inside and out.
Alley is the VERY BEST LECTURER OUT THERE!Lectures are professional, interesting & ROCK!3 writing Projects-The 2nd one is the hardest(Need to Belong). Intense but GREAT!Weekly online quizzes w/unlimited attempts/Exams are multiple choice and can be very tricky! Go to Study reviews.Did NOT use book much. Lectures cover everythg
Mr.Alley is a wonderful teacher I had him this semester for personality of psychology and he was wonderful. He is passionate and his course consists of online quizzes, 3 tests, journal, and discussion. Not difficult but very interesting, by far the best professor in the pysch department and maybe even UNM.
I really loved Alley. He made class interesting and made material understandable.
Alley is an absolutely incredible professor. He is so helpful, so knowledgable, and so fun in class. I would suggest any of his classes to anyone.
Overall, a decent 300 class. However, he has a tendency to babble, so picking out points of the studies he talks about can be hard. His lecture outlines are horrible, so attending class is sadly a must. Journal assignments are tedious, but not hard.
Used to love Steve but his lectures include a great deal of talk that seems useless anytime. I would suggest to take no more than two of his classes. He's interesting but it only lasts so long.
I am sad that I took personality online. He had such great reviews. Course work is extensive; weekly quizzes, biweekly exams, biweekly lengthy hw assignments, biweekly lengthy discussion posts. A chapter or more reading per week. I email him, and he doesn't get back to me. I still don't have my exam grade from 3 weeks ago. He has too many students.
I am taking my second class with Steve this term and he is just awesome. yes his lectures are sometimes long and boring but he tries his best to make them fun. he loves teaching and has a lot of chances to get an A. the only way to fail is if you are lazy
I currently have him for Personality and this is my first time taking him and he is so awesome! He gives real life examples and he only "babbles" on about the material. Basically just do your online quizzes, go to class and take notes and study the lecture outline! The material is there you need to put forth the effort, it's college duh.
Wonderful professor. Tests are tough, but he covers absolutely everything in lecture. He is enjoyable to listen to,and genuinely seems to care about his students. His reviews are not always as good as they could be, but if you go to class and do the quizzes, you should be fine.
Professor Alley is an energetic lecturer. He is knowledgeable on, and interested in, the subjects he teaches.
Great teacher, very friendly and always willing to spend the extra minute to help clarify a problem or concern a student may have. Highly recommend any class taught by him.
Take every class you can with this guy, he's awesome!
Mr. Alley is an extremely nice guy. He might be the most quality guy I have every met. He actually cares about the students grades and doing well in his class. After saying this, I got my worst grade ever from him. Most people in my class got Bs and As, but the material was just hard for me. I really do think he is an extremely great professor!
Professor Alley was an excellent instructor. He always kept me engaged by always having interesting topics to discuss. I can tell he is very passionate about what he does which makes it so much easier to learn and maintain interest.
He is an amazing teacher, always kept me engaged and was very helpful when I was having a difficult time towards the end of the semester. Also, you can tell how much he loves his wife (darn it!) I also learned a lot in this class, although it was fairly easy.
I have taken two psychology classes with Steve and he still remains to be my favorite psychology professor! You get what you put into the course. Super funny, interesting, and genuinely cares about his students and their success. A+++++ teacher!
In ONE WEEK with him I learned more than I have in entire semesters. Freaky. So yeah, I recommend him. Highly.
Great professor. I've had him 3 semesters in a row and loved every class! He definitely keeps it interesting. If you want extra credit, go to class!!!
Alley is the best! He is willing to help you with anything you need help with, even if it has nothing to do with his class. You do need to work in this class but its worth all the information you gain.
Mr. Alley is an excellent teacher. He is very helpful, knowledgeable and entertaining. Make sure you show up to class and give feedback when asked. He will go above and beyond to make sure you understand the material. If you have the opportunity to take a class with him I HIGHLY recommend that you do!
TAKE STEVEN ALLEY, particularly for psych of personality, but ANY class with him will do. He is incredibly funny, approachable, and...real. His psych of personality class will change how you see your friends, your teachers, the world...but more important perhaps, his class will teach you more about yourself then you could ever have imagined.
amazing lecturer!
I literally changed my minor into my 2nd major because of Prof. Alley. I have taken 3 classes with him and his is incredible. He truly cares about each of his students and he really makes all concepts relate-able to the real world. I learned more from him than all of my classes combined. Go to his study sessions & you're sure to do well on tests
This class was pretty interesting. He offers extra credit for going to class and has an optional final exam (which brought me up half a letter grade). He is passionate about his class and cares about his students.
Alley is an engaging and passionate professor however I felt the material in class was a review of PSY 105. I was underwhelmed by the lectures content. Alley is funny and makes it easy to pass but I didn't feel like I came away with a lot of new information.
BEST psychology teacher I've had! His lectures are very interesting and he is so funny and smart! Best tip to pass his class is to take notes during lecture and complete study guide.
Prof. Alley is a great lecturer with a broad knowledge base. His lectures are interesting and memorable. He is very caring about his students and very helpful. His classes are always full, but if you want in he will find a way to make sure you get in. Take a class from him!
Absolutely great professor. Has a huge passion for the material and fantastic knowledge of the subject. Incredibly approachable, empathetic with the students and very nice. His tests are straightforward, he tells you exactly what he wants you to know, reading the textbook helps elaborate more, but he does a fantastic job either way.
Steve is a very dedicated Prof. He's very easy to follow, he throws some humor into his lectures and you get extra credit for attending the lectures. You must have the textbook because there is a weekly quiz online about the chapters. Go to the exam reviews and you will get all of the answers you need to pass the tests.
People LOVE Alley. I on the other hand am torn. I didn't find his lectures incredible helpful and sometimes he talked about the weirdest things. However, he is engaging and wants his students to do well.
He really, really wants to help you succeed and will bend over backward to help you understand the material. He host incredibly helpful exam review sessions the day before every exam and has no problem talking you through any material as long as needed. He is extremely empathetic to student needs and just a really cool guy.
one of the best professors I've had. so engaging and genuinely seemed interested in his students and the subject.
He always kept the class interesting and genuinely cared about his students. I took PSY 331 with him and he had a way of speaking that made his students feel better about themselves. The only reason I didn't get an A is because, I didn't read the textbook. His exams were straight forward. Assignments were easy and quizzes allow mult. attempts.
Steve is honestly the best professor I've ever had, especially at UNM. He cares about the material, he cares about teaching, and he cares about his students. He's really good at clarifying what you may not understand, and he makes the lectures interesting. He's also really funny! As long as you do your best, you should easily get an A.
There is so much work! Lots of material covered! Do not take unless you have tons of time on your hands!
Has to be one of the best professors out there. Willing to take time to explain material and always puts his students first. Lectures are very informative while being entertaining and not at all boring. He understands that life happens, not just school, and is willing to help however he can. Not just a great professor, but also a great person.
BEST PROF EVER!!! I'm a Junior, taken many classes. This is my second go with Steve. He is hands down, the BEST. Go to the exam study sessions he holds - you will always pass. Excellent coverage of the material. Wouldn't change a thing with him! He's perfect! Also, for personality psych, he posts PDFs online - no book required.
Excellent. He has it all: Clarity, passion for the material, fairness, and he is well rounded with what he teaches. I felt like I was really getting my moneys worth. I only wish he taught more classes.
Professor Alley is really amazing. I love his class. He has you take chapter assessments for each test but they have multiple tries without loosing credit. His test is pretty much clear if you attend his lectures-- he literally tells you what to focus on for the exams. His lectures are amazing and he makes you understand the material good.
Professor Alley cares about students and he cares about the course material. He explains the material very clearly and very thoughtfully. If you attend class, and attend his study sessions before exams, you will do fine. I would definitely take a class with this professor again.
He is an awesome lecturer. His lectures are funny, memorable, and pertain to the tests he gives. He explains examples in such a good way that you remember them for the tests. If you attend just about every lecture and go to the study sessions then you'll have no problem getting an A
Adding on to the good reviews, Professor Alley was extremely precise in his lectures and what he wanted from you. He even hosted exam reviews before each exam. His 4th exam is optional, but the (3) homeworks were pretty easy to complete. Little bit of work, but he's a fair grader. Chapter assessments were easy too. iClicker is extra cred, go!
I have taken several of Steve's classes. He is one of my favorite professors. He is helpful and sincerely cares about his students. He is very clear with expectations. Stay on top of assignments and quizjournal deadlines and you should have no problem in the course. Be sure to take good notes from the book as there were no lectures.
Professor Alley is GREAT!! He makes you absolutely love psychology. His lectures are amazing.
Steve is an awesome instructor, down to earth and really cares about the subject and how it impacts us on a daily basis. Would take another class with him!
Steve is a wonderful professor. He's really down to earth and respectful of everyone. He brings an inspiring perspective to learning that I had never had before taking his class. Really makes you think about the material and how it affects you. Has clicker point credit and has a few online assignments. Willing to talk more on subjects after class.
Steve's a really enjoyable teacher. Slides every class, sometimes videos. I-clicker used daily, but it only counts as extra credit points (up to 3 points). His lectures are often amusing. There are papers, turned in on Learn. Pretty clear rubric there. 4 tests, but he drops the lowest graded one, and offers out of class test reviews beforehand.
Was really hard to reach him when needed, never responded my e mails. Lectures are okay wasn't very clear when discussing topics.
One of the best professors at UNM. Provides good and timely feedback. Really funny, and his lectures are very interesting. Fair grader and always willing to work with you as long as you put in the effort.
Steve is such a great guy. Genuinely cares about all of his students. There's a decent amount of work involved in his class, but it's fun work. There's no wonder he has such a great reputation at UNM.
His class was amzing!
Steve, is a great person! He not only helps you if you need it but he's also very interested in your future. This was my second class I took from him and I still keep in touch because he's that great! He has this way to clarify the hardest of ideas. You must take him! However, you do need to keep up on assignments because everything adds up.
I absolutely love Steve. He is a great guy and his lectures are never boring. Have a problem? Talk to him after class or at office hours and if you show him you are invested in the class there is no one more willing to help. He is an easy going guy and easy to talk to. He is truly inspirational and I'm on my way to a Psych minor thanks to him
Steve is one of the best professors that I have had at UNM. He thoroughly cares about students and makes the material even more interesting. I highly recommend taking his class.
Steve is one of the best professors I have had at UNM. He truly cares about his students, he is always there to help. Go to his study sessions and you are sure to pass the test with an A. If you have an opportunity to take him, do it.
Steve gives you every tool to succeed from thorough lectures to exam materials. The most down to earth and helpful professor I've ever had, genuinely cares about to success and even personal well being of his students. Pay attention to what Steve says, you'll learn everything you need to know for the exams and a lot about life.
Steve is an amazing teacher, he's very easy to reach out to and always gives timely responses. He gives little quizzes that are 100 points each but gives plenty of time to finish them with as many tries as I wanted. Because of the FLC class and the size, it was easy for me to connect with him and he was easily the best teacher I've yet.
I wish he taught more classes! He should have an honorary doctrate by now. He is the most charismatic, compassionate, genuine, straight up educator in the psych dept and I have had them all! He will ask you to THINK - so if you are JUST into memorization and terminology, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Not an easy class - but totally worth it.
iClicker credit is well worth it, it helped me pass the class. Tests can be studied for by reading chapter reviews, and the last test is optional.
One of the psych department's best (for context, 45 of my 166 credits are in psych). I was burnt out; Steve revived me. Class hit that sweet spot between rigor, relevance & fun. He used current research because he cares about our education & his as well. He'll even read student's work and crafts his own tests, which is unheard of these days.
I had Steve for an FLC (how to be a person) and absolutely loved how it was structured. Steve definitely will inspire you to love learning again if you are open and allow him to. His lectures are very interesting and you usually have weekly quizzes online but nothing too hard. If you attend class and pay attention you'll definitely pass.
I had a pretty loaded semester, and this class was a really good break from all of that. I enjoyed his lectures. he follows the lecture notes exactly and if you use those to study for the exams, you shouldn't have any problems. I actually found that the lecture notes themselves are more helpful than the study guide.
He is my all-time favorite professor. I had him for an FLC class (How To Be a Person) and the material was so interesting. He really cares about his students and really wants to help you pass the class. If you have any trouble you can always go talk to him and will never fail to help out. He is inspirational I would definitely take this class again
Learned so much and I will carry it with me for long as I am capable of remembering anything that matters! Don't leave UNM without taking him. Lots of writing and discussion; some tests which were straight forward but not easy. Not an 'easy A' but worth the effort if you have the time, and worth making the time for if you don't already have it.
AWESOME! Expect to introspect to an uncomfortable degree, lots of personality assessments/anaylses. Testing well required genuine studying (IME). As far as I could tell he doesn't have any of the arrogance & fake confidence of most academics and that made working for his approval into something meaningful. I intend to never forget him.
He teaches different compared to other professors which is extremely helpful. Provides real life examples in his lectures and his study guides are actually helpful for his exams. highly recommend
Professor Alley has been my favorite professor at UNM by far. I learned a lot in his class that I hope to carry through the rest of my life. He's writing assignments are set up differently than other classes. They are more about what you have learned and how well you can discuss the topic rather than word count. Highly recommended.
To be honest- he's like the best professor I've ever had. He's funny, intelligent, thoughtful, literally has it all. The class is easy as long as you put in the work. He wants us all to pass and succeed- show up for clicker points. Take it, he's worth knowing :)
Dr. Alley is very smart and relatable. He makes lectures hilarious so you want to show up. His grading is a little tough, but not tough enough to set you back. He really makes the class understandable and interesting. Not very many assignments, but enough to keep you busy.
This is one of the best professors I've ever had at UNM. I took this class out of pure interest and I've never enjoyed a course more! Because of Steve, I am now minoring in psychology! He genuinely cares for people, is super laid back, and finds a balance between ensuring students learn from his course while actually having fun. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Steve was probably one of the best professors I had this semester & made his lectures easy to understand. His classes were not mandatory- but I suggest that if you want to do good on his exams, going to class is one of your best bet because he asks questions that were lectured in class. Also, the book is very helpful for his homework assignments!
Professor Alley is a funny guy. But that is pretty much it. He goes on tangents in his lectures and has very vague short slides that take him forever to get through because he basically just tells stories that are somewhat irrelevant he whole time. Then you get to his tests that are super specific. Would not take him again, terrible professor.
He is an amazing teacher!! I love him so much. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you show up you'll learn so much AND he'll give you extra credit to come to class. His study guides and tests are difficult, but he doesn't base your grade off your tests. (I wouldn't have gotten an A if he had!)
Stephen's class is clear and well structured, reading the text is important for filling in gaps that don't get covered as much in lecture, he's got great stories for remembering the important stuff, no he won't spoon feed you answers but you'll have left learning somthing that's highly applicable to almost everything else you'll learn.
Very helpful and good at explaining things to students. Heavily lecture oriented style, with grades consisting mainly of three exams and attendence, with some inclass work. Exams were about on par for what you'd expect for a 300 level course. Final replaced lowest grade.
Steve is one of the best professors that I have had. He is really interesting and you can tell that he loves what he does. He explains things really well and his exams are straight from lecture. His reviews are helpful. I took both social psych and psych of personality with him. If I had the option to take him for another class I definitely would.
I took an online class with Steve. He gives extremely detailed feedback. If you do something well, he tells you so. If you can improve on something, he tells you how. The workload is not as heavy as some online courses.
This is one of the easiest PSY classes I have taken so far at UNM. Steve is passionate about the subject matter and wants his students to succeed. My only complaint was that the due dates for assignments and journal entries were posted about a week in advance as opposed to at the beginning of the semester. Other than that, the class was wonderful.
He is an amazing professor. He really engages with students and provides multiple examples and thorough explanations. He might give assignments that require time, but in the end it helps your understanding! I definitely recommend him for any psychology classes!
If you are looking for a very chill and interesting professor, he is your go to. Easy going and very knowledgeable. You have 4 exams, some quizzes, some assignments and journal posts. Journal and assignment posts are lengthy but he is looking for more of your thoughts than an actual answer.
He uses iclickers for participation every class at the beginning, middle, and end. The weekly assessments aren't hard at all, especially since he gives unlimited chances. He is really humorous during his lectures, and when someone has a question/comment he listens and gives great feedback with open ears. I would definitely take another class w/ him.
Professor Alley is just a gem. He is funny, and trying to make the engaging and exciting for his students. He respects that his students take the time to come to class, and that they are there because they want to be. He cares about his students learning. Attendance is not mandatory, but you do receive extra credit every time you go to class.
Steve was a GEM! I took two classes with him. Social Psych and Personality of Psych. He is passionate about what he is teaching, making the class very fun. Weekly quizzes online, 4 Exams in class, 4 journal posts online (or discussion posts) and also 4 mini essays. All very fun material, very free lance with the essays, journal posts.
Awesome professor. Explains things so thoroughly and is super fair and caring. I'd take him again in a heartbeat!
Professor Alley is arguably one of the best professors at UNM. He takes the time to read through your assignments and provides insightful feedback. Definitely one of my favorites at UNM. I recommend him for any psychology class he teaches.
Really cares about the course material and got me excited about class
Professor Alley is an amazing professor! He will say the textbook is required but you do not need it to pass the class. Class is based off of 3 exams and an optional final exam. I recommend going to his study sessions, everything he goes over will be on the exam!
I didn't want to leave his class because I enjoyed it so much! He is such a great professor, kind, caring, funny and easy to talk to. I never hesitated to ask questions, and he never hesitated to answer them in full. I learned a LOT from him. He is just a GREAT teacher and I would take all my classes with him if I could! Would learn so much better
Prof. Alley is awesome! I wish I could take every psych course with him. I took an accelerated online class, so it was a lot of work, but he made it so fun and interesting. The feedback he gave on every assignment was positive and geared toward making his students feel successful. His own posts were very personal and relatable. Take Prof. Alley!!!
Very condescending but overall his class is fine. Lectures are pointless. I learned most of this material in 105 so I didn't have to read the textbook or go to class. His assignments and journal posts are difficult because his TA's grade them.
Probably the best instructor Ive ever had. Hard material, but great class!
Probably my favorite professor so far. His lectures are interesting and fun. Never a dull moment. iclicker participation everyday is extra credit. 3 tests pretty easy if you review lecture notes. theres 3 homework assignments that are easy as long as you do quality work. Journal assignments are short and helpful. Overall an amazing professor.
Great class. It is easy to fall asleep in the lecture, but if you go there is extra credit. All you need to pass the tests are the papers he gives you two weeks prior to each test. If you study that, your golden. Remember to turn in your assignments on time. You will have free time if you take this class, except exam weeks.
I love Steve, he's an incredible person. He really cares about his students and tries to learn names. Lectures are extremely engaging if you listen and he's hilarious and tells great stories. I've heard a few students say his lectures drag but I think it's because they're not engaged and maybe don't understand psychology well. Learned a alot!
lectures are always kept interesting, although at times his explaining can be a bit too abstract. weekly online quizzes are simple. monthly written assignments are do-able and aren't graded too harshly. lots of extra credit via in-class iClicker points. he's a caring guy.
Mr. Steve is so nice and cares about his students probably more than he should. He talks about weird things I thought only I did like we all do them, which was great. He goes over material thoroughly in class which can get a bit boring but makes the tests easy. We used textbook but you can get an A without it.
Steve is one of the best professors I've ever had at UNM, so much so that I took three classes with him. He made the material interesting and was very caring towards his students. He made sure to provide study sessions outside of class before every single exam. He also plays really great music before class starts.
Professor Alley is amazing. He gives really interesting lectures and tells a lot of stories but they all pertain to the lecture. Has an assessment every week but they're all on quizlet. Attendance with participation is optional, but his lectures are great so I recommend going.
Take Dr. Alley's class!!!! In my opinion, Dr. Alley is the best professor in the psych program. If I could, I would take all of my psych classes with Dr. Alley. He truly cares about his students. He's engaging and it's clear that he is passionate about his work .
Mr. Alley it truly #1 professor I've ever had in my college years. He is very fun, his lectures are amazing, he's very connected to his students. Before each test he goes out of his way and puts extra time to go through the study guides a day before each test, which is a great help. I can't wait to take more classes with him. TAKE HIM!!!!
Mr. Alley has been, by far, my favorite professor of all time. His lectures are engaging and fun and he really cares about every single one of his students as students and as individual people. His assignments are not too difficult and they really help you understand the material even further. I would 100% take another one of his classes!!!
Steve is awesome. Usually hour and half lecture classes are a drag but he truly is passionate about Psychology and that translates to his lectures. His interest in the subject makes the lectures interesting and I look forward to going. Do your homework and don't take any zeroes and you will do well. His course is very well organized 10/10 would rec
This instructor is a super-nice guy. He oozes kindness. He has a reasonable amount of homework - not too much, yet enough to feel as if I actually took a class and learned something. As long as you turn everything in on time, you are golden.
This is the second course I've taken with him, and he doesn't disappoint. Attendance is extra credit, Learn quizzes weekly, 3 major writing assignments, and 4 exams 1 dropped. Great guy, great course, definitely recommend.
Steve is an awesome professor! I had him for the PSY 105 FLC, and he really takes the time to get to know each one of his students. There is an online quiz every week or so, and we had 2 midterms-where we got to do corrections afterwards. He really makes the course so you can not fail, and 10/10 would recommend.
Steve's class is always very interesting. Assignments and journals were clear and the expectations of this course were clear in the syllabus. His study guides and study sessions were extremely helpful in being successfully on exams. Not my favorite class overall, but Steve's classes always force you to think critically, which I appreciate.
Good professor but lecture heavy. Sometimes I don't know what hes talking about since there is a lot of things to talk about. Learn quizzes, 3 assignments, journals, and tests. Takes some time to get through all of them but mostly easy. Tests are hard since there is a lot of stuff you need to remember and know. No open book or notes on test.
Steve expects solid work effort out of you, but he definitely does his part to make sure you succeed. He gives incredible feedback. The grading criteria is always crystal clear, and you have all the resources you need to succeed if you put in a decent effort. Little bit of a heavier workload if you take the 8 week course, but nothing awful.
Best professor in the psych department! Ive taken multiple classes with him and he truly cares about all his students. He also is good at teaching and explaining the material. Weekly online quizzes but answers are on quizlet and you can take as many times as you want. Weekly writing assignments but its actually on interesting things!
Don't take any of his classes if you have a serious interest in psychology. He's a sweet guy and has a considerable knowledge of social psych, but he doesn't really teach you much. His lectures consist of him going off on tangents about personal experiences, and he rarely touches on material. Take this class for an easy A+, but not for the content.
This was my third class with Professor Steve and as always I really enjoyed it. His courses require you to put effort into them, but it is worth it because you get such a good understanding of the material. If you ever need help he is always willing to meet up and help you. If I had another chance to take a class with him, I would.
Great guy, cool stories, great examples, tests though are a bit tricky and determine a majority of the overall grade. Study guides are long, complex, and confusing.
Dr. Alley is my absolute favorite professor. He is so caring and gives you everything you need to succeed in his class. Participation is EXTRA CREDIT which is amazing and significantly helps your final grade. His exams are based entirely on his lectures, so if you go to class and pay attention, you will ace his exams every time.
Steve is by far the best professor I have had at UNM! I would highly recommend taking a course with him. His tests aren't hard, you just have to review the material and do your best to show up to class. He is a wonderful lecturer and really wants to make sure you understand the material. He is super kind and understanding. Highly highly recommend!
Professor Alley is a really cool guy. He's also funny and you can tell he cares and loves his job. However, this course was either really boring or really interesting. Overall, pretty easy if you show up and do the work!
Difficult exams that include a lot of trick questions, but your grade is not based entirely on exams and its still easy to get an A even if you are a bad test taker
I took Steve for an FLC course which i reccomend to any new freshmans. He was amazing, he was very flexible with our exams and homework too. (Keep in mind we were a class of 20 students). He was my favorite professor out of all the professors I had last semester. If i was studying psych I'd def take his class again. He's a good man!
I took the 8-week personality course. A lot of coursework: 2 quizzes, a journal and a paper due each module. He gives great feedback and it's an easy A if you put in the work. Didn't receive a single grade until the last week of the course, though, so that was stressful. I don't think this is normal for him though based on previous reviews.
Steve is an amazing instructor. This is my second time taking a class with him. Even as we have switched to an entirely online format during these weird times (the global pandemic), he remains a great instructor and encouraging us through all of this. Overall, giving some effort on assignments and paying attention in class will really help you
The best!! I loved coming to his lectures!!
Most of the class is online, go to class and you won't have to read as much. I would still get the textbook to refer to in the discussions. The quizzes are easy because you can take them multiple times to get the score you want.
LOTS OF WORKS BUT NOT TOO HARD
Steve is an extremely caring professor, he explains everything. He wants you to explain things with explicit detail, but once you do one assignment you will do well in the others. He has several quizzes all of which tend to be online, and numerous tests that are slightly difficult but hard to fail. There is alot of work, but is an awesome teacher
By far the most supportive and encouraging professor I've ever had. He is there to truly help his students succeed
I loved Steve's lectures! He started with fun music or memes and had music breaks in the middle of class! He made the subject very enjoyable to learn! I'm definitely going to try to take another class with him next semester!
Stephen is a great teacher, he really cares about his students and is incredibly understanding of circumstances, especially with the pandemic. Highly recommend taking him. If you can, get to know him outside of class and you'll always have someone to talk to, help you out, or use for a reference later on. Can't wait to take more of his classes.
Steve was by far my favorite professor this semester. I took his Social Psychology class and loved it. He cares deeply about his students and the material. He explains it in ways that makes sense. His lectures are something I looked forward to attending! He's hilarious and awesome at the same time.
Bless this poor sweet man. He was a fun professor but not my cup of tea- his lectures were really hard to stay focused on and I often found myself feeling confused after class. He more or less goes with the flow, he isn't very structured and that was a slight drawback for me. But he is incredibly sweet and you can tell he enjoys teaching!
I had a hard time getting anything out of the lectures because he doesn't put much text at all on the PowerPoint and mostly just talks. I'm definitely more of a visual learner so it was difficult to learn anything and pay attention. I appreciate the low amount of assignments, and that everything wasn't just busy work though.
I had a hard time getting anything out of the lectures because he doesn't put much text at all on the PowerPoint and mostly just talks. I had professor Alley for Psychology of Personality & it was by far one of my favorite classes! He really cares about his students and is very genuine. Always willing to go the extra mile to make sure you understood what was expected of you. Would def. recommend! :)
Alley has been my favorite professor so far. He can get off topic and ramble, but it's always because he is passionate and excited about the topic. He gives good instructions, and graders give great feedback. Weekly chapter quizzes but they are not difficult, as long as you read the text. Really good with meeting student's needs.
Take his class! You will not regret it! He is very down-to-earth and easy to talk to. He is lecture heavy but you'll be hanging on to every word. I had him during the pandemic but he did a great job over ZOOM. His TA's are also awesome.
You'll get at least as much out of this class as you put in. As much as 3.14159 to 1 (nerd joke). Seriously, even if you already know much of the material. It's really well-rounded. The class is interesting and fun. I got lucky. Speaking of well-rounded, Steve allows quite a bit of latitude with the subject matter when writing assignments
Have fun with your writing. This class is an excellent opportunity to develop those skills. They will be rewarded. I was rewarded with great feedback. Which is to say Steve gives feedback in a great way. If he makes a comment, pay attention. He knows what he's talking about, he pays attention, is extremely fair and the man cares. About you.
Professor Alley is, hands down, the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are genuinely engaging and fun, he emphasizes true absorption and enjoyment of the content over just getting an A, he's HILARIOUS, and deeply passionate about the content and success of his students. He's just a good human being, and challenges you to be one as well.
One of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are easy to follow, his visual aids are great, and each assignment is an easy A. The exams are held online and are super convenient. Would definitely take another class with him.
Professor Alley is an absolute treasure. His lectures are inspirational and engaging- I truly looked forward to going to class every week!
The class information was great and he was very responsive but I took the excelled course and the amount of work that was given was really overwhelming! I literally had no energy for any of my other classes, if you are a student that also works and takes other classes, beware of the workload.
The workload for this course is heavy. I spent way more time on this course than others, and I walked away with barely an A- (by far my lowest grade). Even though I feel this course is unncessarily demanding, I would do it all over again, because Professor Steve is the best.
My friend had this professor during the term in which they received a mental health diagnosis and were going through a very difficult time. It is serious. Despite receiving a letter from my friend's therapist, this professor refused to make any exceptions for deadlines when all other teachers had and failed my friend.
Professor Alley is top notch. I highly recommend him. I'd take another course from him again if I could, but I've already taken pretty much every course number he has taught over the last two years -- all wonderful and interesting.
Prof Alley was awesome. Fun subject and interesting teacher. Always started the class with a goofy video. Took extra credit iclciker points. Easy grader. I enjoyed learning about the subject and not feeling pressured by the exams and whatnot. Final exam is optional!
Quizzes that are multiple choice and fairly easy, same with the two tests. Paper/journal every week which isn't that bad, just answer all the questions, use examples. Discussion post and replies which are pretty easy. Great teacher that always gives really good feedback.
This was my second class with Steve and he was amazing yet again! The topics were so interesting and he is a caring grader, so as long as you write something you're passionate about, he will be sure to reward you. May seem like a lot of work at first, but once you build a routine it becomes second nature.
Steve is great! His lectures are entertaining and very informative. If you pay attention to the specifics in the lectures and read the chapters, the exams will be very easy. He is also very understanding. I had an academic trip and would miss an exam and he kindly opened it for me when I was able to take it.
Third class taken with Steve and he was amazing once again! Very rigorous 8 week course, but you'll get the hang of it right away if you stay on top of things. Learned so much and would definitely take this again.
Prof Alley's PSYC2110 class is a must-take! His lectures are engaging, and the material is genuinely interesting. The workload is manageable, and the exams are fair. I found unstuckstudy ai really helpful for study prep alongside the textbook. Overall, I had a great experience in this class.
