He is the best teacher I have ever had.
UGGGHHHH HATED HIM
grrrrreat class, great teacher
make sure you have your grammer correct and you'll do fine
he is very interesting and so is the class, very easy
fell asleep constantly, made me feel like a dumbass, he's mean

super cool. the best ive had so far!!! :)
Great teacher... very strange person.
Awesome teacher, super nice guy!! Very helpul...my fav professor

His grades are based on spelling and grammer. He is not focused on phil.
He is ridiculously anal about spelling and grammar. Very strange but not mean. Alot of worksheets!
Not a specialist in the subject matter of the class. Nice guy. Intellectual humor. Anal about grammar but I think rightfully so.
Good class.
worst class ever! It was way way way way HARD. i suggest you take rws200 instead!
mr barbone was so funny and i learned a lot of crazy info in his class! He does not believe in tests!!! he only gives worksheets and usually goes over them in class and sometimes gives u answers. He is so nice and helpful...one of my fave professors!
this was such a hard class, all i can say is that he wasn't very clear about what he wanted from you and his grading system doesn't make sense. he is super picky about grammer on everything, even on little worksheets.
CLASS WAS KIND OF HARD. YOU GET ONE ESSAY A WEEK FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER. HE IS VERY PICKY ABOUT GRAMMAR AND SPELLING, BUT AN ALL AROUND GOOD PROFESSOR. VERY FUNNY AND NICE.
No tests, grammar/punctuation must be perfect, when class ends early and he gives our worksheet stay he helps/gives answers during that time. He is a difficult, WORK HARD. Takes attendance, get points for being there everyday.
Great teacher, maybe not to those people who do not know how to spell or use punctuation correctly. Best teacher I've ever had. Intellectual lectures and very interesting topics. Highly recommended.
WARNING: THIS IS NOT A PHIL. CLASS!!! This class is entirely based upon grammar and rules of arguments. If you're looking to discuss phil...don't take this class! Very odd lectures.
No tests, just homework and papers, but not necessarily easy. Indecipherable grading system. Boring class, not philosophical, but not too tough either. Odd man, not a good early morning class!
Intelligent, clear, friendly, and funny teacher. However, unless you are a superb writer, you'd better off taking someone else's class.
he only teaches required courses for a reason, the reason being if you had a choice you wouldn't choose this class. Also, someone should let him know that he's teaching a philosphy course not a english one. very nice man, very bad professor
Barbone's philosophy classes are only for philosophy lovers. Don't take his classes if you're a lazy illiterate bum who can't write. But if you're truly interested in enriching your philosophic understanding, Barbone isn't bad.
dont take it if you are not a morning person. class usually ends early though. i suggest staying the extra few minutes so he can help you w/ the daily assignment. nice guy
Very quirky odd. You are always wrong during lectures and he is always right. Is a grammar freak but it helps out. Essays are pieces of cake. Get help on the worksheets. I got an A but I have no clue why to this day.
Dr. Barbone is the coolest professor ever. Very helpful, nice and funny. Would definately take a class from him. What a cute guy!
Really crazy but overall easy. Dont know what the deal with him is, but if you ask him for help after lectures he will help u. Must have good grammar and spelling otherwise he will give you a poor grade
Very passionate about the subject. Extremely informed. Intellectual lectures. A fine professor. Hard grader, but rightfully so.
A man with a good heart. Do the homework (it takes about 5 minutes) and go to office hours to discuss it and you are guaranteed an A.
his ideas are very off-the-wall, but he still keeps it interesting. just 2 papers and 2 quizzes, so its not a difficult course.
I'm going to go against the crowd here and say I thought his class was HARD... the concepts were really hard for me to understand, and he grades essays really tough. Tests were fairly hard for me too. If you don't like thinking about philosophy (like "is there a God?") don't take this class.
GOOFY GUY!! He is pretty funny when he tries and his ideas are interesting if you can keep yourself awake. Don't slack on the note-taking, anything is game on tests.
Very nice and articulated professor... I admit that this class was not always entertaining, but alot of it, to me, was interesting... Grades a little harshly, but getting a good grade in this class is very feasible.
Odd man,had interesting ideas. Perfect for the philosophy field. Very, very hard grader, but send your papers to him beforehand to look at; it will help a lot. Lectures are very repetitive, but attend when it's closer to the midterm!

this guy is way COOL.. he makes class really interesting. not boring at all, but at times he can be really strange. he doesn't give a lot of homework and when you turn in an essay he lets you submit one first which gives you an oppurtunity to get an A on the final paper!!
All phil lectures seem to be boring and jump back and forth between topics too often. Yet his book quizzes are fairly general and the essays can be completed even without paying attention in class. the midterms are the hard ones as his study guide material is way too general and doesnt help at all
Barbone is really great. He is very entertaining in class, and the lectures are interesting. You cannot miss many lectures and pass the tests. The tests are curved a lot,and if you have any questions he is VERY helpful. If you give him rough drafts for essays he will give you better grade if you
really really good professor! knows his stuff and is extremely clear and helpful. lectures aren't boring and he is a fair grader. only two exams, two quizzes, and two essays. i definitely reccommend him!
Very nice n helpful.you can't go wrong in his class.u just can't fail!if you do,there is something wrong with you.He makes time for his students.Sometime the class is boring, but i think every class is boring.if you're going to take phil take Barbone he's a great teacher n he knows what he is talking about.if you ask he'll tell you whats on the test
He´s the best teacher I´ve everhad. The tests are very hard but with this guy you really learn philosophy in a funny way!
Barbone is a very strange man, but he's pretty funny which makes his lectures more entertaining than most. His tests are hard but he gives a generous curve on them, and the essays are easy to get a good grade on.
He makes lectures fun and interesting. As long as you show up and take notes you should do well. One of the best teachers I've had.
He is really nice and helps students out a lot. There are two papers and you can turn in as many drafts before the due date to get an A. There are two tests which are super easy if you read the book and a mid-term and final. He is very generous with his curve and is always willing to help out. You dont really have to go to class, just get the notes
Barbone instills his own interest in the subject matter in you, everything adds to your own curiousity and enjoyment in life. Very very helpful and approachable, he really seems to want you to understand, whatever it takes. I would recommend taking any class he offers, I have taken two now.
Incredible teacher, so much fun to listen to. Definitely recommend taking his class. Minimal reading and interesting and not too difficult papers. He obviously has a passion for the subject and it rubs off on you.
Very boring teacher and has the worse mannerisms of all time. He does annoying things so often that I found it hard to learn and respect him as a teacher. Not a difficult class, as long as you can make it though the lectures.
Fairly interesting class. But he is a difficult grader. He doesn't tell you what he expects for the tests. So don't be suprised if you get a bad grade. But the class is fairly easy. Ok G.E.
Good teacher. make sure you follow his requirements to the T on the papers. his lectures are very clear and informative on the philosophers he is covering. i would recommend this class to any philosophy major.
I really enjoyed coming to class. Very interesting lectures makes the time fly by. I didn't find that he was a hard grader as others have stated, but I grasped the concepts very well. Take his course you won't regret it!
Communicates difficult material to students well. Has trouble limiting annoying commentary from students during lectures.
Extremely knowledgeable about philosophy...I even went to get help from him for other classes. Completely willing to help you, all you have to do is ask and make time. I definitely recommend him as a professor.
This professor made me realize that I too could be a philosophy professor. As to how he looks. He is so cute. I just want to run my finger over his cute short hair. Baby...

Extremely interesting lectures. He really engages the class. Expect 2 short booklets and one novel. Expect 2 essays, 3 reading exams, a midterm and a final. Sounds like a lot, but it is really easy. Midterm/final is almost all lecture. Take good notes. Essays are really simple. Do them early and submit rough drafts. Guaranteed A.
He's a really sweet, somewhat goofy guy who makes lectures interesting and seem shorter than they really are. It's an easy class, but he does expect nice work. He's more than willing to help, though.
One of the best professors at SDSU hands down. Cares about his students tremendously and is always willing to provide help. Especially if you show that you are really interested in philosophy.
Not a terrible teacher (nice guy), just difficult for an upper division G.E. Try another one if you can.
Very repetative, says the same thing in different words for a good 20-30 minutes fairly consistently
This class was super easy for me. No homework whatsoever and I never got below a 3.7/4 on the quizes. Also I loved how he curved the midterm and final! By curving it to the average, I was able to get over a 100% on both. Amazing teacher and a very interesting class.
Genuinely nice guy. Extremely helpful and approachable. Lectures can get a bit boring but he is a great teacher and enjoys what he does. Drops lowest quiz grades, lets you use notes on tests. Easy!
Very nice and easy to talk to. Lectures can be a bit tedious. Easy A if you try.
He's a very nice professor. his lectures are somewhat boring but also fun at times. Take good notes during lecture and you're fine. No homework at all, just read 2 books. Exams were pretty easy, just say what you feel. He's very helpful, come to office hours and get to know him. But he only gave me a B+ when i was less than one percent from an A-.
Good class overall. Very easy class. Lectures can get very tedious. I got a B and rarely went to class. Just be able to formulate your own thoughts on matters.
So basically 2 essays, 2 books to read, 1 is super short, and 2 tests. Good class overall, didnt ever go much but got an A-. just make sure to take notes and go to the review sesh if one is offered. Totally worth it for a general ed. take it
Good teacher. 3 Papers and a final. Grades papers very reasonably. Does his best to be clear in his lecture and will answer questions all day.
Hilarious professor. He knows his stuff and explains it to his class so well. Simply going to class and participating is all you need. He is one of the best teachers i have ever had.He really cares about his students and philosophy. Take him!!
super nice guy, you can tell he actually enjoys teaching and gets into it. got a B and it was a pretty chill class, not a lot of work and the test were easy.
Easy class. 2 quizzes on novels, 2 short essays, 1 midterm, 1 final. Boring class. Doesn't take role but attending helps you do well on the midterm and final.
In my opinion, I say he is an easy instructor. That is because I never missed a single class -- My outcome? I received an A. It pays off to go to class. He definitely cares for the students and wants everyone to get an A. Use his office hours -- It is highly recommended!
Best college teacher I've had. He knows the material well and teachers it perfectly. He will help you no matter what and doesn't make stupid decisions. Easy class, just attend.
Hands down, the best professor in the history of SDSU. He is extremely helpful and knowledgable. 5 papers + 1 final paper + Final exam. The papers are easy to get full marks if you submit a draft first. Attendance is not mandatory but it is necessary for understanding (tough material). TAKE all your classes with him if possible.
Such a dedicated professor! I adore him! He makes his expectations crystal clear, is willing to read drafts, make appointments, send you your graded papers in the mail, make up lectures... I honestly don't know how he finds the time, but it's awesome. Great sense of humor. Work hard in his class because he has a lot to offer!
Great teacher, great class. It may not seem entirely interesting at first but he is very passionate about his subject and enjoys teaching it. A few quizzes, a midterm, 3 papers, and a final. It's in your benefit to go to class so you can use the information in your papers, not everything is on his powerpoints. I definitely recommend him
He is interesting and very good at helping you to understand the concepts. Work load is not too much and he allows you to turn in a draft for grading early, which you can revise. The class is interesting and easy, it's okay to skip out on a class here and there. It is easy to get a good grade.
He's really nice, but the class is boring. Attendance isn't mandatory, and you can turn in everything online. There's a handful of assignments, but if it looks like you generally get good grades even though you failed the midterm, he'll still give you a good grade.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I honestly did not have a better class than this my freshman year. Lecture a bit boring, but if you're awake, it's easy material to understand and he's a very funny guy. Homework is easy, just back up your answers; midterm easy if you were actually awake during his lecture. If you need a phil GE, TAKE this class.
A very nice and quirky man. Lectures are boring (naturally, it's philosophy) but he makes a good attempt to keep it interesting with jokes and such. Had to write three essays (2 pages), read to short novels, do 2 journal responses, with one midterm and final. Going to class is not mandatory but the majority of what you need to know is lectures.
He gives you rubrics with EXACTLY what you need to do for every assignment to get every possible grade. You get the grade you want to work for in this class. Barbone was one of my favorite professors, he is funny and quirky and curves the midterm and final. Take him if you can.
Best professor ever, take this class. I took the class in summer and it was 4 easy essay 1or 2 pages, read 2 really interesting books and a final. Sometimes the class is bored but it is easy, I got an A- in the class
Best Teacher I have had at SDSU. He is very helpful and clear on the information given during class and is very flexible. He is a fun teacher, using examples that relate easily with the students. Only thing is that his grading is not easy, nor hard. Overall Awesome Teacher
He's a nice and a bit of a quirky guy. He brings new material to class everyday, but I was always pretty bored. I think he did the best he could trying to make it entertaining though. Good prof, just not that good of a class.
Barbone is a really cool guy and super helpful, overall the class was very interesting and easy! Has a funny laugh and tries to make class as fun as possibly although some lectures can get quite boring.
GREAT professor, one of my favorites at SDSU! He makes lectures enjoyable and also seems to be passionate about what he is teaching, which is very helpful. Expectations for assignments are extremely straight-forward. Made me laugh all the time, he is very unique and i WISH i could take him again!
Barbone's class is easy but his lectures are very hard to get through. He takes long pauses between sentences and does not have a powerpoint to go along with the lecture. That being said, class is not mandatory. 45% of the grade is comprised of 3 essays that are very easy. He lets you email him your revision to help you improve your score.
There is never any question about what it takes to pass and get an A. He tells you explicitly. He clearly has masterful command of the material he teaches and is a very kind person. You cannot go wrong with this professor!
Barbone's class is pretty solid in my opinion. Make sure you take his class at your most awake or high energy/concentration point of the day, or his lectures will just be bland and boring. He's a good teacher, energetic, and amusing. Grading scale is unique compared to other GE's. (4-Point Scale) - Attendance SHOULD go for chance at best grade.
Nice guy. Tries to make lectures interesting. Very smart guy and does his best to answer all questions. Good at making arguments from the points of view of other people who don't even agree with him. Attendance not mandatory, some people skipped more days than they showed up.
This teacher really isn't that bad, but the course is incredibly boring and an easy A if you show up. If you are looking for a class to get into interesting things in philosophy, don't fool yourself. It's a gen ed 101 class, so you basically only get information on what past philosophers have said and read a couple of somewhat interesting books.
To get a decent grade in this class all you have to do is show up and take notes. If you follow the lectures you're pretty much set for the midterm/class. You also have to read two books but they're short and easy reads. There is no daily homework only a 3 or 4 reflection type essays.
I love this professor! Attendance helps with course key points but is not mandatory. Your grade is made up of two tests and a few short quizzes and essays. Professor Barbone allows you to send him your quizzes and essays if you finish early so that he can provide feedback for you to edit and then receive an A. Overall he is funny and I recommend.
Great professor. He really takes the time to help each student. He always replies quickly to emails and you can even email your essays ahead of time and he will give you great feedback. I definitely recommend taking this course.
Professor Barbone is very passionate about philosophy but his lecture are hard to follow and are not posted online. Attendance is mandatory as he uses course key for each lecture. The class is made up of a midterm, final, and several essays/book tests. If you email the essays/quiz early to him, he gives you time to revise and gives feedback.
Barbone was great! Really easy and simple class. There are 3 essays which are one to two pages and two books to read which are very easy reads. There is a midterm and a final but he gives you the terms which appear on the final.
Prof Barbone is great! Lecture notes aren't posted online so taking them during class is super important. The class consists of a few quizzes, essays, midterm, and final. He allows you to email him for feedback which is super helpful; A's on all my papers. Definitely a lot of memorization for tests but not too hard of a class!
underrated. makes otherwise boring material interesting. has a lot of knowledge about old philosophers and tries to speak as if he was arguing from their position, regardless of whether or not he agrees with it. great teacher. pretty easy class too and you will learn if you pay attention.
Lectures could be a little slow and hard to follow, because it is all verbally said, no slides. He also grades tough but will provide feedback & take the time to look over rough drafts of papers. There are essays, quizzes, 2 tests & 2 mandatory books to read (which I would consider textbooks). Time-consuming for a 101 class, but learned a lot.
Makes Phil 101 super interesting and easy to follow. He's a funny prof, show up and take notes and you will pass
No matter how hard you work, its very hard to get Barbonus points
Very funny guy, extremely approachable, keeps things interesting. Doesn't take attendance but uses coursekey for participation. Have to read two books as an assignment so try to find them somewhere for free. Lectures are pretty chill, don't have to do anything but take notes and occasional coursekey. Tests are pretty easy, final is not cumulative
super funny & nice, his lectures won't bore you to death, the class is super easy.
Very easy class, just listen to the lectures. He makes the class very entertaining and there isn't really homework besides some takehome quizzes and 2 books to read. He is very easy to talk to if you have questions too.
He made the lectures really interesting and if I class wasn't at 8 a.m, I wouldn't have missed a day. There's two midterms and quizzes/essays on short books. Make your essays really original and he'll give you a good grade.
A very kind professor willing to work with you. Weekly short 1-2 pg assignments on chapter readings. First paper is 4-6pgs, second paper 6-8 pgs(I think) and final paper is 10 pgs. Only one final exam. Very similar to Wheeler's class just graded harsher on papers though gives you very detailed feedback. One extra credit opportunity, take advantage!
This is the greatest man in the entire world. You will never come across someone better. Treat him with respect or else you are a terrible person. Love this guy. 10/10 lectures, so funny and interesting. You don't have to go to class but why would you not want to spend 3 hours a week in the presence of someone this great.
The class is really entertaining, and Barbone is really funny. You can submit nearly all assignments early and he will review it for you in order to get a higher grade. Attendance is taken via coursekey. You need to read 2 books for the class, both of which are good, write 3 essays, 2 book quizzes, and 2 tests. No HW other than readings.
He is always available to answer questions and even grade quizzes and papers in advance so that you can get an A on them easily. His lectures are super boring, but if you don't come to class it won't really affect your grade too much. Interesting content, but final and midterm are worth a lot of your grade
Take this class! There are 2 books (super easy) that you have to read, 3 essays, 2 take-home quizzes, & 2 exams. I'd reccomend going to lecture & taking notes on what he says bc his coursekey & exam questions are based on what he discusses. I did really well on the essays, quizzes, & first exam & was excused from taking the final :)
Barbone presents material in a great way and grades everything according to the rubrics on blackboard. He is very easygoing and definitely wants his students to succeed. He asks coursekey questions almost everyday so it's important to show up to all of the classes.
You read two easy books and have a quiz/essay for both. The quiz is written/not timed. If you submit them early for a draft her grades them for you to resubmit so its easy to get an A. Boring lectures but such a kind man. Uses coursekey during class that you have to pay for. TAKE THIS CLASS! It is so easy to get an A and the professor is so great
Super easy class as long as you attend lectures, and he assigns minimal homework. Moreover, he assigns essays but otherwise his midterms are multiple choice.
Seriously, Professor Barbone is one of the kindest professors I've had this semester. He is very knowledgeable and funny. His lectures are not boring at all. When writing essays, he allows you to send him as many drafts as you want until he assigns you an A. He is all around a great person and professor.
Dr. Barbone made a unique, and new situation for all students as palatable as possible. His efforts did not go unnoticed as all students came together to thank him for a job VERY WELL done on our final day. In his class you will be engaged, you will learn, and you will have a voice. Every class in the future I will look for his name.
i love barbone! he's a great prof & really wants to see his students succeed. he assigns 2 books and 3 essays- 2 ab the books and 1 w/topic of your choice (don't get scared, they're a page long if that). uses coursekey for participation points. attendance: recommended but lectures are recorded in case you miss one. gives great feedback b4 due date
Barbone is extremely caring and considerate. His video lectures were lighthearted and easy to follow. Essays were very simple and subjective.
Barbone is such a nice, genuine guy. Had him last semester at 8am but was always engaged because of the thought-provoking ethical scenarios he proposed. There's only 3 essays which he isn't very strict about and you get to choose the topic. He was very understanding with virtual learning and even canceled our final exam super generous. Take him!
i felt like this class would be easy if you were genuinely fully interested in philosophy but i got lost in my own thoughts and become easily distracted and the fact that it was at 8am did not help. the midterm and final are purely based on lectures because that was the only thing we met for.. he posts lecture slides but they do not help at all
point system very confusing. don't rlly know overall grade bc he doesn't put anything in. very nice and a bit understanding. but he's very repetitive in explanations. no group work. assignments are okay. mainly jus quizzes. 3 essays.
barbone is great his lectures are interesting but i literally never went and got an a. his grading scale is weird (everything is out of 4) but the rubrics for the essays and stuff are clear. follow them and you will get a good grade. he is super nice and the class is pretty easy there are two books to read, two quizzes, three essays, midterm, final
This class was my favorite class by far Mr. Barbone is an amazing professor, for the overall class you just need to read two books and write an essay and take a quiz on, which he is willingly to read drafts of both. Also he is understanding, you just need to let him know in advance if you need some extra time on an assignment.
I took him for General Studies, which most freshman are automatically enrolled in. He always made sure that coming to class would provide you with some sort of lesson in regards to how to succeed at the school, such as library resources, Associated Students, or health services. Incredibly easy and useful if you know nothing about SDSU.
Love Barbone, he's very friendly and very nice. 3 short essays and 2 books to read and 2 exams. The exams are easy if you go to class and take notes. He records his lectures but sometimes the sound doesn't work. He gives lots of opportunities to give help and is very approachable
Took the first ever PHIL333 class and it was really chill. I highly recommend you show up to class because he has these little pop-quizzes on the readings which really add up on your grade. There's one 300 word writing assignment each week. He is pretty picky when it comes to grading but overall pretty straight forward. He's very nice about makeups
Prof. Barbone is a wonderful professor. I had him for two classes this semester and I am so glad I did. He uses clear grading criteria, gives great feedback, understanding if you need to push an assignment as long as you communicate with him. He really understands Philosophy on a deeper level which means the education he is giving you is quality.
This was my second time taking a Barnone, and I continue to enjoy his teaching. He is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about philosophy, and does a fantastic job hiding his personal views. If you're interested in a philosophy course, take one of Barbone's!
Boring class, but it is required, just complete the packback's well and on time and you'll be just fine as long as you show up. Some helpful information about what happens on campus.
goat status no other words to describe it. pretty fun guy and fun lectures imo
