I took his course at Pace Univ. He is a great teacher. Makes it easy to grasp
Boring and dull; doesn't actually read the papers, doesn't listen
unsympathetic, tough grader

Had good way of teaching material but a very hard grader..
Will NOT give you the grade you deserve. Does not give anything above a C
Easy class but HARDASS w/ grades. You WILL NOT get a grade above a C no matter who you are. The class itself will fool you.
Wicket hard grader. Will not give you anything above a C. Very monotone voice in class, straight out lectures everday.
Boring. So boring that I could well die from it. Doesn't know how to relate ideas in an understandable or even remotely interesting manner.
good way of explaining things, can get a little boring, but if u listen to him, u can do really well... he's a tough grader, but curves alot... i wound up with an A in his class
Insanely hard. If you're not a major, don't even bother. I would religiously take notes during lectures and write same stuff in exams and he'd tell me I was wrong. Figure that out.
He's the best IF you are a philosophy major. Otherwise...
the most evil teacher here...very angry inside.

Horrible CLASS!! Don't really think he reads the papers! Just does his wierd thing on grading papers that doesn't make sence...
Worst professor I have ever come across. He will actually tell you that what you have regurgitated from his notes in class onto an exam is wrong. Aside from his awful grading, he is soooo boring, so unless you want to kill urself, DO NOT take his class.

Evil, Evil man, the "bayne" of my existence. Master philosophy and still fail. Even if Hume, Descartes, and Socrates were in his class they'd fail. Horrible grader. You can't win, so don't try.
The worse teacher in the school. NO ONE should EVER take a class with the man
cool guy, interesting class, easy class. papers could b answered straight from the notes.
Stay Away...AWFUL
The man is power crazy, and thinks he is god of philosophy. A helpful hint for his class is to drop it as soon as possible. NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM
This class is not that bad at all. You have to take good notes and go to class but he is always willing to help with rough drafts for papers. The class is not extremely easy but you just have to try.
The man thinks he is all powerful, and master of philosophy, unless you are a philosophy major you will end up with a C or lower.

if hitler and satan had a baby his name would be steve bayne. he was obviously bullied when he was younger and feels the need to make up for it by grading like a nazi. don't make the same mistake as me..everything you read here is true..drop the class
Believes he is a philosophy god. you will not get above a C in his class. I had all B's and he gave me a D- minus on my final paper after telling me the rough draft was good. When I asked for an explanation through email, he ignored me!
For an Intro class he is hard. Class participation counts andwhen you give an answer it's not "quite the answer he's looking for." BUTCHERS THE HELL OUT OF YOUR PAPERS AND EXAMS. His name sums up how this course is like; BANE! Look it up and s
His class is like taking a sleeping pill
This guy is the worse teacher that I have had in college. Getting a good grade in his class is like trying to jumping across the Ocean.... IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN!
Knows alot. The whole code sheet for papers was rediculous...he gives you a sheet with a million letter codes and puts like 500 on your paper so you have to look up the code to see what he wants you to do with your paper....impossible to get more than a C
This class blows. Im a senior and this is the worst class I've ever taken. Its even worse than Anatomy and Physiology.
This guy is the worst teacher ever. He uses an example to prove his point but then later uses the same example to prove he's wrong. His readings make no sense, he has you read b4 talkin about it in class and it's hit or miss with the writing assignments.
great teacher, very fun class
i'm taking the class right now and i feel like he's a great guy who communicates clearly.. i'll come back at the end of the semester and tell you if he grades as nice as i think he is..
Relativly engaging in class however his grading system is very distorted. Setting high expectations are one thing but he does not seem to understand that this is an introductory class not a 300 level class. Also when handing back exams uses a three page coding system to write comments.
Hes really not a bad teacher. Hes very clear when giving examples and all the tests and papers come right from the notes. His tests werent hard at all and came right from the study guide. Hes a little wierd but nice just the same. His class can get boring sometimes but its not that bad.
When compared to other philosophy teachers here(Prof. Tong) it is a world of difference being able to understand the professor. He is a tough grader but my final grade was almost a full letter higher than i thought it would be. If you like philo he is a good professor to take.
Awful class, no matter what you do you won't get better then a C
Grading is unfair, he's one of those profs that are somewhat young and just came out of college that give too much work and grade unbelievably hard. I guess he's desperate for a permanent position at Fairfield so he thinks if he grades hard the administration will like him.
He's tougher than a Mormon girl on prom night
Every example seemed to be based off of the same idea involving him and his parents, and made things unclear and overly complicated. Never commented on anything, even when I asked for clarification. He prefers a very impersonal coding system. Butted heads with anyone who offered up a different view.
this class was not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. If you go to class and take good notes you will be fine. There are no test, just a paper and the midterm and final. As long as you write exactly what he says in class you will get a good grade! he is always willing to help! trust me....
Horrible! Get out now while you still can! He is the worst grader I have ever had. He has a complicated code sheet for the comments he makes. It is the most insane thing I've ever seen.
Toughest grader I've ever run into. That being said, very fun class, Bayne is one of best philosophy teachers here. Only great writers will get A- or A, don't take for a good grade. Has a quirky little grading system but it's not confusing. Tests not too hard, great lecturer.
grades papers incredibly hard. when he looks at these papers i dont think that he recognizes its ph10 and not ph4000. but that aside i really enjoyed his class. good lecturer and a funny guy. homework was nothing more than 20 pages of reading and a one page paper each week. tests were fair too.
I don't understand how this guy can possibly get bad ratings. He's a great guy and a wonderful professor. He is very clear and articulate, which makes him excellent for a PH professor. Moreover, he reviews drafts and gives great feedback. Thus, it's unlikely that you will do poorly on the papers.
Bayne is misunderstood. He is an extremely nice guy, and he wants to help. He explains the material in detial, repeats and goes slow. You have to be dumb not to do well. There is a lot of writing but they are usually not hard. Study the notes for the exams and come to class and you will get an A.
really nice guy. Make sure you go to class and study the notes.. papers come right from your notes as well. easy A- :)
what is this frowny face about? very good teacher, material is confusing but he explains it in detail in class and clarifies it for you. good class discussions, doesnt just lecture. a lot of work for the class, a writing assignment every week, but i enjoyed the material and the class, he's a great teacher!
nice helpful guy but a really hard class for me. the paper edit sheets are kind of weird as well
Worst teacher at fairfield. Absolutely kills your GPA, is impossible to get a decent grade even if you try.
This man's class sucks. A paper due every class about**** you don't even understand. The people who wrote good things about him are the only 6 people to receive A's in his history as a teacher. If you want a bad grade, he'll be sure to help you out!
he has no idea what he is talking about and when people ask him questions, he generallly confuses you and himself
Very interesting professor encourages discussion about material, and very easy to sidetrack on any philosophical arguments, insane amount of work paper due nearly every class tests are all lengthy essays, huge paper counts for majority of grade, takes attendance every class, very helpful however concentrates on the material he likes to study
an inconsiderate, heartless man. not concerned with teaching and/or helping students grasp the essence of various philosophical theories. after attending fairfield for 4 years, he is probably the most impersonal and unhelpful professor i had. did the work - did well in class - but it was torturous. did not live up to my prior ffld experiences.
worst class i have EVER TAKEN. im not even kidding this class is so boring and he confuses you and everyone else when someone asks a questions. There is also a 10-15 page paper due. even intellectual people hate this class.
Steve is seriously misunderstood. Just because the material is difficult (believe, I know. I took him for Kant) doesn't mean that he's not a good prof. His examples make concepts easy to remember and he'll always answer your questions. He takes attendance but you get 5 unexcused absences and he'll take pretty much any excuse.
I genuinely enjoyed his class. He encourage discussion and debate which, for me, helped in grasping the topics. I didn't love having to complete a final paper AND final exam, but I'd take him again.
Professor Bayne is super helpful. Yes, we have papers, but he will read and go over them with you if you finish them early, so you can pass them in knowing you'll get an A. Tests are based almost entirely on lectures, which are entertaining because he always puts in some kind of story to help you understand. Very nice man, highly recommend.
Great teacher straight forward and easy to understand. Puts philosophy into words you can understand and relate to. 2 papers a semester which can hurt your grade if you dont do well. Midterm and Final are essays very straight forward. Monotone but fun to listen to class can get boring but you will enjoy it.
Extremely unenthusiastic, shows no interest in the material he teaches. Tough grader too. I would definitely stay away.
Class can get pretty boring, but the assignments are straightforward and easy. He makes the material very clear and is always willing to help. I thought this class would be terrible, but I was surprised by how much I liked it
Terribly boring class and nightly homework assignments. The homework is pass or fail but you also have two papers and a midterm and final and participation counts. I went to every class and had perfect notes and when writing the essays they were accurate but he gave terrible grades. Boring class, don't take!
Literally most boring class of my life. He makes everything drag on for hours. There are nightly graded homework assignments that took FOREVER! He doesn't give much room for you to expand on philosophical ideas either because he wants to stick to what each specific philosopher taught. AWFUL CLASS
In his exams you can be witting about the lectures or his own words and he says that that it is wrong and takes 15-20 points off. He gives a midterms and final and two papers that drive you crazy because it is hard to find what he wants. He replies to emails and is available during office hours. Attendance is 10% of your grade.
Nice guy. A reading and response are due at the start of every class, but the writing responses are graded on completion bc he doesn't expect you to fully understand the material before he explains it. 2 papers, if you submit a draft he will provide feedback. Only 2 tests(midterm & final) gives a study guide and you choose which questions to answer
To be honest I thought this class would be pretty difficult, but if you pay attention and do the readings you will be fine. He is a kind guy who encourages participation. He is willing to help you out if you need it. No regrets taking this class.
Professor Bayne is an extremely nice, understanding, and knowledgable professor. I didn't do exceptionally well in his class, but that was more of a testimony to the difficulty of the material than to him personally. He grades tough, but on a curve, and is more than willing to help you to understand the material. Do the work, and you'll be fine!
Class is as boring as it gets, loves to hear himself talk. Then he turns around and grades all tests and essays extremely specific with his tedious and time-wasting abbreviation sheet that you have to keep going back and forth to. Grades papers as if he was reading a real philosopher's writing. Really just infuriating.
This class drags on forever. It is so boring and will leave you with your brain physically hurting. There are no powerpoints, he just talks . You would think philosophy is up to interpretation but if he doesn't agree with your answer you're wrong. Reading and responses are due at the beginning of each class. 2 papers. Hard midterm & final.
Bayne has you read a whole article and answers questions for every class. He's a great guy, but his lectures are boring and if you don't take notes in class then you will do very poorly on his exams and papers. If you take this class make sure you share notes with other students to make the work load a lot less.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Boring lectures and grades everything like he's Christ himself. Don't take this class unless you don't want to learn anything and get an F.
really great guy and he's super nice but SUCH a tough grader
Lots of reading, boring lecture, but a really sweet guy whos passionate about Philosophy. As long as you laugh at his jokes you should end up with a good grade!
He lectures for the entire class. It is actually very easy to do poorly in this class. The essays are hard, and they're pretty much your entire grade. Pay attention and see him for office hours before every essay, it's the only way you'll do well. He's a good guy, and likes when you engage in conversation with him- that helps too.
Really nice and caring professor but did not get any grades for the entire semester except my final grade. Participation in each class multiple times is necessary to get a good grade.
bayne gives long lectures that can get boring but I found him to be an easy grader and caring for his students. if you participate, go to class, and ask questions about the essay topics you should be fine.
He doesn't deserve this horrible rating at all. He is very available outside class, and dumbs down the topic very well. His topics are tackled in a more theoretical way, but if you want to practice your argument skills, take him. Reading is quite short too, and he goes over it in class. 3 papers, participation and reflection, each 20%.
I always enjoy Professor Bayne's class. He is super funny and engaging. He makes philosophy interesting. 3 papers and no tests for the semester. HW due almost every class.
I'm a math major, but he made philosophy so interesting! Took this as mwac, so readings and a short response due every class - graded for completion. Class is a discussion of the reading, so do the hw! 2 papers (allow rewrites) and 1 final paper (no rewrite). Essay topics are what you discussed in class.
I have no idea why prof. Bayne gets such poor ratings. He's caring and if you truly care about making better arguments, you should take him. The class just has lots of reading, but you can skim; and the papers are not that hard if you go to office hours. He's very knowledgeable and if you like listening to an informational lecture, take him.
The worst professor I've ever had in my life. If you don't agree with his philosophy you will FAIL!!! Makes it seem like it's good to have your own opinion but grades you worse if your opinion is further from his. Almost failed his class because he "didn't like my style of writing" or "like my opinion" which is what he wroteon my papers many times.
Overall Prof. Bayne's class is a bit boring but overall enjoyable, he is just such a hard grader. You can spend days on a paper and even meet with him about it, just for him to take points off because he doesn't agree with your particular stance, or doesn't like your writing style. He is a great person, just very hard to please.
I liked Steve as a person, but not as a professor. He makes it difficult to do well in his class. I would ask him questions about my essay and he would give an answer, then I would go back later to confirm everything, and he would contradict himself. Then, once my essay was graded, he would contradict himself again, which left me very confused.
Lots of writing throughout the course, you have a writing assignment (completion) for every class, but he has not graded any of them yet. 2 essays within the course, and 1 final paper. You can revise the 2 up to a letter grade, but he says he rarely marks them up that much. Also, his opinion is always right, but he won't share what his opinion is.
Steve's class was interesting but he is such a hard grader. I got Bs on my first 2 papers and he gave poor feedback. He gives you the opportunity to revise the first 2 papers, though he doesn't often give many points back. I somehow got an A but I had to work extremely for it. If you take him just don't be afraid to go to office hours. Try to avoid
Lectures are extremely boring. No computers or even a slideshow, he stands and talks for 75 minutes straight. Hard to stay awake, and he grades very harshly. I would not take him again.
Professor Bayne was an extremely tough grader and never gave helpful feedback. There is a lengthy writing assignment due each class which he never ends up grading. His lectures are extremely boring. He stands and talks at you for 75 minutes and does absolutely nothing to try and engage his students. Take someone else.
Incredibly boring, he stand up and talks for the entire class tough to stay awake. Your whole grade is based on 3 essays and other writing assignments, tough grader.
Professor Bayne gives heavy reading prior to every class. He was fair on grading papers. He allows corrections up to ten points which is very generous of him. His corrections he writes on your papers, even if you do quite well, is still a lot. Cares deeply about the matter and is very interesting and engaging to listen to. I enjoyed this class.
Lectures the entire class but doesn't know how to carry a lecture. Participation is important bc I think he grades papers partly based on showing that you understand the material. Nice guy with good intentions, but very awkward. You'll get an A if you participate, revise your essays, & do HW. Easy material, just tedious & a lot of reading.
