Don't buy the book. You absolutely do not need it. Professor Boucher is really boring and wastes a lot of time. The TA's were useless and could not grade right. Don't go to section.
Lectures were good, used PowerPoint slides which were clear. Didn't go to section and didn't read the book. Study the lectures. Problem sets were a bit hard but policy briefs were very easy. Use lecture notes for midterm and final, book too difficult to read. Online articles he post are helpful so just read those
easy class, almost no calculations needed, just some basic common sence, and understanding how certain historical events worked out
This class was weird. Should be called "Risk, Insurance, Credit, and Solow." An odd jumble of economic concepts placed under a title of "economic development." Problem sets are time intensive and very difficult. Policy brief is easy. Midterm and Final are moderately difficult but definitely doable if you go to lecture and study the notes.
This class was too hard. do not take it with him. His midterm and final are too hard! his hw's are hard and take hours.
Prof Boucher z intelligence, knowledgeable, understanding, & extremely helpful with a positive approach His lectures r very useful with all real examples His tests are extremely understandable fair game easier than HW There are points for HW & he helps you 2 do it There z 1 med,4hw 4easy quiz,1final his office hr hepul Take him you?ll learn alot!!!
Steve Boucher is great professor. Very understandable, great lectures, Don?t miss his class if you have a chance! Highly recommonded!!!!
Boucher's very intelligence, knowledgeable, extremely helpful with a positive approach in class/office hours.his tests are very reasonable,The good thing is that exams are way easier than the HW.His office was always full of students & he loves to help u until you completely understand the materials! Go for it! U'll learn a lot even u don't like ECN
the best professor Ever:)
Very approachable professor. He seems to genuinely care about his students, and his lectures are very organized and made easy to understand. He's an overall GREAT professor, and it was a pleasure to take his course this quarter.
Hardest teacher I have ever had. Expected way too much of students. The homework he assigned took me hours and days on end to complete because he never actually taught us how to do it. wouldn't have been able to pass the class without the TA's help. Don't take him.
Hardest teacher I have ever had. He read directly off power points in class and expected students to know how to do the HW. HW took days and hours on end to complete. You know its bad when 2 days before the HW is due the TA is telling you to start it and NOT SLEEP. Very difficult HW and tests. Be ready to teach yourself everything.
Understand the homework's and you'll be set. Homework is not too hard considering it is just basic algebra, no calculus or upper math required. Gives random 2 question quizzes basically as an attendance check. Many guest speakers. Main complaint was one day he spent an hour and a half talking about why people should plant trees.
Awful teacher. Gave hw that he never taught or explained. TAs were helpful though
Lots of extra credit and the midterms/final are similar to the practice exams and homework assignments. Overall a pretty easy class if you put in the work.
This class is really easy if you put in the work, go to office hours before assignments are due and he will pretty much go through all the questions (and answers) with you. His midterm and final followed the practice exams very closely and his lectures were relevant to the exam material. I never read any of the books and got an A
Boucher is the most hands-on teacher I've ever had. The assignments are long, but if you do them well, the tests are easy. Also, you go over the entire assignments during office hours. He responds in detail to email questions within an hour. I learned a ton, and really appreciate how willing to help he is. He speaks Spanish for any ESL students.
I really enjoyed 115A with Boucher. He really goes the extra mile so long as you put in the effort to really understand the subject. Crystalline, straightforward, and (at times) philosophical lectures that really makes you think outside the box. I'm really glad to have taken this class. )
Great professor. Lectures are clear but long. I loved his interactive ways of teaching the concepts! Material may seem easy at first glance but it's actually quite tricky. There were lots of articles to read and a book that just goes more in depth of what was taught in class.
I took his course and found it much more difficult than expected. His lectures are long and dry, expect to study the material on your own. Exams were graded hard with a medium curve. If you can, avoid this class.
Honestly , one of the hardest classes I've taken. There are 4 HW assignments that are very long and timely. The MT was difficult with an average grade of D+ for my class. It was part T/F and part write on. The test was graded harshly, with no partial credit, the questions build off of each other so one wrong answer will mess up everything else.
Enthusiastic and friendly prof. 4 time consuming probsets worth 40%, but if you attend class they're pretty straight forward (start early). 5% is clicker quizzes so attendance is mandatory. MT and Final are 55% and reflect probsets/practice test. Grades on a curve. Not particularly easy or hard, but interesting and would recommend.
Boucher was my favorite professor this quarter. His class is easy to follow and his lectures are clear. Attend class because he has clicker questions. His problem sets arent bad at all because its based off the lecture slides and his midterm/final are like his practice ones. Very caring professor he wants everyone to succeed.
Insanely hard and long problem sets. Nice guy, but very difficult for an elective course.
For an econ elective, this class was pretty complex. Prof Boucher explains concepts well though finding the part you're stuck on and breaking it down. The Problem Sets are hard, go to his office hours! There are weekly quizzes on discussion section material that's posted on Canvas but I'd still recommend you go. Overall interesting subject/class!
I found the material for this class to be very interesting and useful. This class isn't easy but it's not that hard and the great thing about this class is that there is only the Midterm and Final. I would 100% recommend this class for an elective.
Steves lectures are hard to be interested in, the class is beyond hard, and the problem sets that are worth 40% of your grade are extremely difficult. Dont expect much help from the TAs or professor, this class is way too hard.
He doesn't teach you how to complete homework or do well on the tests, you have to teach that to yourself. He goes off on tangents about easy concepts and glosses over hard concepts because he gets pressed for time because of the tangents. Totally disorganized. Changes directions on homework all the time because of his mistakes. This guy sucks.
Boucher is an amazing professor. The biggest portion of your grade are the problem sets (40%. They are time-consuming but are not difficult in nature My only issue is that the lectures don't always focus on the homework but he posts slide which helps out. Exams are a breeze if you understand the problem set He really shows care for his students!!
He is an ok prof. 40% of your grade is problem sets which is pretty as long as you go to office hours. Lectures can be a bit disorganized. Midterm and final easy as long as you do the practice. He really cares about his students and will host extra office hours just to help you out. Really nice and approachable guy. Would def take again though.
Hated every second of this class. I came in thinking that all the reviews were just exaggerations but I was wrong. His problem sets are so hard and time consuming. They took so much hours to complete, that it could be added up to 3 full days worth. His midterm was okay, but that was only because I gave up on the HW and decided to self teach. Avoid!
He has a really good way of using this econ class as a platform for talking about important social issues. The homework is very difficult unless you have a background in working with large sets of data in excel, but the office hours for both him and his TAs were very helpful. Highly recommend you set up a study group, but the class was great.
Problem set 1 was literally 18 pages.... Takes way too much time and doesn't even add to your learning. His lectures are unorganized, he goes on tangents, just a overall waste of time.
I took this class thinking these reviews were a tad overdramatic. They weren't. For what it's worth, he seems to be a nice enough guy and so are the TAs, but the problem sets can and will hurt you especially if you don't know your way around Excel. Content is pretty dry. Attendance is mandatory because of pop quizzes on iClickers every day. Avoid.
This was one of my favorite classes. Professor Boucher really made the lectures organized, interesting, and engaging. The materials were easy to follow. The problem sets were long and time-consuming, but not tricky at all. I didnt team up with others and still managed to get full credit on all of them. Great class, learned a lot, would recommend.
Professor Boucher was a really good teacher. The lectures were pretty fast but he posts slides on canvas. The problem sets were LONG and difficult if you don't understand the material but I HIGHLY recommend working in groups. Other than that, Professor Boucher was SUPER understandable and caring. Answers to emails and cares about your grade!
Boucher is a really caring guy but lectures were not that helpful. He skims over hard concepts so you basically have to self teach. He never teaches you how to use excel but problem sets were all excel based. Problems were tedious, but not impossible if you go to discussion and work in groups. Midterm was similar to practice ones.
The lectures are hard to take notes during. He goes pretty fast and it isn't always clear what information is important. Problem sets were tough, but they did force me to learn to use excel.
Impressive professor with great online structure. Easy class if you complete all the assignments (although there are lots!). Group project a pain but checkpoints make it easier. Recommend taking this- one of the few classes I still learned useful stuff when it was online!
My best professor this quarter I feel like I actually learned formulas and material that is applicable to post grad careers. Straight forward expectation, but there can be a lot of assignments.
Boucher and his TAs are awesome. 2 asynchronous lectures and 2 quizzes (multiple attempts) every week. 1 group project with multiple checkpoints throughout the quarter. 4 homework assignments that are very similar to midterms and final. Exams are open-book and open-note with 48 hour windows for submission. Very kind and approachable. Take him!
Struck me as a little weird but he's a solid prof and the class is easy
Mandatory lectures. 4 problem sets (Homework) but can be done with a group. Also, there are 2 exams and a group project which is relatively doable. If you have friends or a good group of hard-working individuals, this class would be easy.
He was a very generous professor.
Super passionate about the material, and very knowledgeable about the subject! His teaching style is clear, and I actually learned a lot! Highly recommend. He was very lenient on the midterms, making it untimed.
He is a gem, very clear lectures. The way the class is structure it can be a little overwhelming but it's very helpful in making you learn the material and staying on top of work load.
Definitely one of the easier ARE classes coming from a senior and one of the more interesting ones as well. Feel it's a good class to gain awareness on the economics of poverty/ inequality, which everyone should have. Very organized structure and fair grading/work load. Overall great class, great professor.
Prof Boucher really cares about his students which is great compared to other teachers are Davis. He shows up to class and makes hundreds of slides(even though we only get through 20) and makes an effort to be available to help. I wish students participated more because Boucher really makes a lot of effort. I genuinely wish I had him again.
This class required an extraordinary amount of work. Grade based on 4 long problem sets. All four were graded by TA and were very harsh. Midterm and final were nothing like the practice tests given out beforehand. Clicker questions and weekly quizzes were unfair. TAs show no mercy on students and are very tough graders. Do not take this class!
Yes, attend section. Exams are based off of discussion sections and lecture slides so study discussion section slides and lecture slides and you should be good. There's extra readings but didn't have to read them. iClickers for attendance. Problem Sets can take a long time, easier if you've done excel work and taken CMN 12Y (lots of excel for hw)!
Professor. Humanitarian. Samaritan. What does professor Boucher not do? In short he does not not assign long and time consuming problem sets. He teaches you a lot about excel. Even if you do not really mind if people in Mozambique are poor, you will still get a lot out of this class. Learning about excel and will be more important than the work.
Course is consists of several long problem sets (40% of grade), 2 exams (45% of grade), all assignments were graded ruthlessly by the TA's. All problem sets and tests were based on discussion content which was poorly taught by the TA's (at least for me). Practice material did not do a good job of reflecting the questions asked on the actual exams
Honest review. Lectures are boring, you'll fall asleep. Only showed up b/c of iClicker participation/quizzes that are worth 5% of grade. I was going to give 4 stars but he lowered the curve after the final! Curve for an -A for the class was set at 86% but he brought it to 88% afterwards. Would've had an -A... Make use of OH w TAs, it saved my grade
iClicker 5%; 4 long problem sets 40%, which you can work on in groups of 3; online quizzes 10%; midterm and final each 22.5%; 2% extra credit available, which I wish I had done all of it. The exams and problem sets aren't hard but there is no partial credit, so a mistake on one problem may cause a mistake on another.
Average professor. Lectures are unnecessarily long and cluttered. The professor rushes through the main concepts at the end of the class and always holds the class. if you are a slow learner and like to process material step by step then this class is not a good idea.
This professor is super nice and gives many clear examples of concepts and equations. There are 4 problem sets which can take a while to do but I did not consider them to be difficult. The midterms were very similar to the practice midterms he gave us. You do have to go to every class to get the iClicker points. Non-cumulative final.
Interesting course but the problem sets and tests are dense. Slides provide the steps for everything but are hard to dissect as there is a lot of info. Exams also include questions about assigned readings. Overall, be ready to digest a lot of info and do a lot of work. Saving grace is that practice exams reflect real exams decently and he curves.
Loved Prof. Boucher! He's a fun lecturer and super chill. The actual class content was surprisingly chill. Not much harder than the intro econ classes. Short weekly post-section quizzes, 4 psets (you can do these with up to two other people but I did them alone and it was totally fine), 1 midterm, final. Everything open note (notecard on exams).
Each lecture has almost 70 slides and very boring. Homework (40% total) is tedious but can work in groups. It is allowed to bring cheat sheet in exam, two exams 45% total, only write final answers so no partial credits, just focus on calculation in homework and lecture slides will be fine. Attendance 5% (iClicker). Section quiz each week 10% total.
Lectures is not interesting at all. All lecture slides are too long (almost double of slides compared to many ECN courses), so it is hard to get the key points. Homework has Excel so very time-consuming. You can only write final answers so no partial credits for homework or exams. Give very little curve 1% or less after final.
Attendance is technically not mandatory; but it's such a large portion of your grade that it may as well be. Fair, relatively straightforward exams, exactly like practice tests, and your standard run-of-the-mill lectures. The four Problem Sets are a HUGE part of your grade and must be done correctly; its very easy to lose a lot of points quickly.
this class was good! boucher is knowledgable and approachable, and teaches the concepts well. the problem sets are definitely challenging so make sure to start ahead, as he doesn't explain the context properly in class. his office hours are helpful, and the exams are very reasonable
This professor is really cool and teaches the class in great detail, he also has a great personality. Overall the class was pretty simple and straightforward if you study and pay attention. I enjoyed this class and professor.
don't ever enroll in this guys class
Really good professor, he cares about his students, and easy course material, easy A.
good managerial economics professor
the topic is interesting though
Interesting class, but bad professor. Forces students to be in class til the very end (for in class participation) and makes attendance a big deal. Do not take this professor
this prof goes out of his way to make the midterm and final super hard and only curves for people who are failing the class. attendance is mandatory or else the room would be empty bc the slides are full of text that no one want to read
Steve is really caring, and passionate to help students during OH. Quizzes and problem sets have high proportion. Finishing carefully can get full grade. Exams have some pitfall but not hard. He also gives extra credit opportunity. Highly recommend.
This course has high proportion of problem sets and take home quizzes. As you finish it carefully with your group members, and deeply understand practice exams, you are probably get an A.
I cannot understand why there are some negative evaluation to prof Boucher. He makes this course really easy and relax. The problem sets and quizzes have high portion, which easily get full points(or nearly). The exams are similar to practice. Furthermore, there are extra credit opportunities. Even though attendance is required, you can learn a lot
The easiest ECN course in UCD, even easier than 100AB!!!
If you don't get a good grade, it is your problem, not prof Boucher's. He makes the problem sets and online quizzes really easy and basic, which have high proportion of final grade. The exams are similar to practice. He also gives extra credit opportunity to bump your grade.
really amazing professor!! the homework are easy as long as you attend discussions. honestly you can fail both exams and pass with a C as long as you do good in everything else! but it's impossible to fail this class, the exams are basically the same as practice. he also has a very cute dog :)
Professor Boucher's class was great, he is a great lecturer and extremely helpful in office hours. There are 4 problem sets you complete over the quarter which you can do alone or with up to 3 other students. These are quite challenging but do a really good job of teaching you the material if you put the effort in.
He is an average professor but his problem sets are very time consuming so make sure you start them early and work in a group because that will help. His exams were kind of harder than his practice exams but you can still get a decent grade without doing well in those.
Great class and great prof. The 115 series is great. Take 115b with Wilson after and it's great.
What can I say? He's pretty good looking.
Good Professor Ecn Development class of 2017 Phil, Ecn.
Strongly against using AI yet grades with it. Incredibly tedious and boring homework. Other than that he's okay I guess
Good Professor Ecn Development class of 2017 Phil, Ecn...
Not 100% sure on my grade as I havent finished the quarter. Problem sets are hard and horrendously long. I can't believe he is assigning this. Not very related to what he talks about in lecture.
Steve is such a helpful professor. He has the knowledge to explain concepts really well, and helping students go through the thinking process step by step. His Office Hours are the most helpful OHs I have ever been to.
Average Workload, Great Lectures, Awesome Grading.
He's a nice guy and he cares a lot. The homework's are just way too long. for the midterm you could learn all material just from section. After midterm, sections became super hit or miss, and the material felt poorly organized. If you've taken multiple econ classes, this class is not hard, just tedious. Lectures move super slow and feel repetitive.
Professor Boucher is one of the best professors here at Davis. Not only is he a great professor, he is a good person. He is very helpful during office hours and very patient with students. I recommend everyone take his courses because he is good at his job. The problem sets in this class can be challenging but doable. Lucky to be his student.
