Instructor presents the material very well, and class is nearly always interesting. Test questions are sometimes not clear, with relative terms, or other wording tha leaves more than one possibility.

Agree with previous - he is obviously very knowledgeable, but gets distracted a lot and easily. Seems to enjoy teaching his view of the world. Don't take him if you need to learn Anthropology.

knows the subject too well but too hard on essay grading. there are two test, 5o questions test and an Essay test. Even if you get 99% of you questions, the essay will kill you. the Questions are 60% of your grade.

Do not take his summer class, way to much info. Teaches above and beyond the book. For the last three classes, there was a test each night just to catch up.

Take him if you are an anth major, very informative, excellent in his field. Answers questions completely. Tricky tests, hard to get an A in this class. Offered 2 page essay for 15 pts extra credit.

There is a lot of info covered in this class and a good deal of outside work is required. Tests can be tricky, but the student just has to pay attention and be willing to put in outside effort. Hemakes the class interesting, even when the material is not. This is college- the student has to work too

I took the Honors leave class and he is very hard, however he prepares you for the 4 year institutions by increasing your writing skills. If you want to be treated like a child do not take this class. If you want to learn and if you are capable of acting like an adult...TAKE THIS CLASS.

Not a good teacher - he gets off topic very easily and has an agenda which although I may have agreed with him politically, I was there to learn the basics of Anthropology. Does not teach course material then grades as if he has - it is fine for some material to be like that, but not the majority.

Steve really likes this subject but gets off topic often. He assigns a lot of work but failed to keep up with the grading, we got our midterms back the day we took the final. Don't take this class if you're trying to keep a good GPA but he does prepare you for a four year school.

Fast paced casual lecture style. I simply listened and did well in his class, but many people felt it was too much information to digest. He can go off on side topics, but thats part of the fun of anthropology. We did have to cram the last few tests in at the end, but I thoroughly enjoyed the class.

he is the best professor I have had in a while. He will do anything to make sure that the material is understood and had a genuine passion that he hands down to the students about anthroplogy. He is a very interesing and well educated man.

Steve is great.He is very demanding.If you are checking this site to find an easy professor- he is not it.However, if you want a teacher who you will learn from, who knows his stuff, and who genuinely cares if you do well in and learn from his class then he is your guy.Final 2 or 3 tests will be take home..guaranteed! Steve is very intelligent, very thoughtful, very insightful, and explains until everyone understands. I was very impressed with this class and will recommend it to everyone has has even a slight fascination in human evolution. This is not an easy class but you will learn a lot. I know I did. I give this class an A.

This is a professor who knows his stuff and wants you to know it as well. He is effective in his overall teaching ability, although some distractions and tangents at times. Overall he is worth taking and his classes are lecture/notetaking. Take good notes ask questions.

Sparks lively discussion in class, but time management sucks - easy to get off topic. He's very political, we figured out that asking one 'charged' question was a good way to avoid at least half the class. This meant easier grading as he didn't cover much. If you want an easy A, this is a good strategy - if you want to learn, take another prof!

Fabulous teacher. Challenging, clear, interesting. He wants to make sure you understand what he's teaching. Tough & fast talking, but take good notes & pay attention you're sure to learn a wealth of knowledge about all kinds of interesting things. He goes off on tangents sometimes, but they usually relate to class topics. Highly recommend!

Brillant Mind. Very Concious and passionate about his work. You'll Ace the class if you keep up with the reading. He provides an outline that will guide you through the course. Expect discussion of world and environmental issues every now and then. But jumps right back to topic. Also very helpful if you need it.

I took this class online. He was un-responsive to emails, constantly screwed up the availablility of quizzes, and ignored my emails for two months while I tried to re-take a test that he couldn't seem to figure out to make available. He only responded after I emailed the dean complaining. I will never take a class from him again.

This class is challenging with tons of information. With that said, it was not hard. Just go to class everyday. Take good notes - which are written on the board during lecture (not all of them). Study before tests and you will do fine. The first 2 exams are tough, I got C and D. However, the last 2 or 3 exams are take home. Overall I got an A

Mr. Bouscaren was an amazing teacher. I had no interested in Anthro, was only taking it for the gen ed credit, but know am considering changing my major! He is a great lecturer, and always willing to help. If you get the chance, take him!

The best professor I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable and experienced in the field of anthropology. Prof. Bouscaren will do anything to help his students succeed. He is laid back and has a great sense of humor, but gets the job done.

one of the best professors i ever had- enthusiastic, demanding, and intelligent. i seriously considered becoming an anthropologist after taking his courses. in the end, i became an architect, and use his anthropological lessons every day. even if you think you don't care about the subject take it- it applies to anything you will do in the future.

This class was interesting because he really LOVES what he does and for someone just taking classes to fill general ed, I think its really important because it makes it interesting. I studied the book for the test but he goes more off his lectures, i ended up getting a C in his class, but i was hardly there, either way he is fun

Interesting fella... I have taken previous anthro classes and am really drawn to the subject but I'm impressed with how much I learned from this intro class!! He's a busy guy so he isn't too prompt with responding to emails... so be patient. Study, be involved in lecture and you may actually have fun learning!... something I've found very rare

Get ready for his classes to kick your butt! I was in his Honors selection and the work load was intense, but manageable. Steve is a great guy, a little sarcastic, but it keeps the material interesting. Be prepared to think critically. Great teacher, but if you want to just slack off this isn't the class to do it in.

If you're able to, definitely take his Honors course. I don't recommend that if its your first time in a college classroom because he does move at a quick pace, however if you come to class prepared (having read the text the night before and reviewed your notes) then you'll be up to speed. EXCELLENT PROFESSOR!!

Think twice before taking this class. 800 points were possible, however, exams came soooo slow. After 3 1/2 months, only 350-375 points were achieved even with an A grade. The last 450-475 points were slammed into the last 2 weeks of class. He allowed us to take a few home at that point to redeem himself. A good lecturer, huge procrastinator.

Dr. B is first and foremost a scientist. He has a dry sense of humor and enthusiasm for what he teaches. Exams are hard and require studying. I highly recommend anything he teaches - if you really want to learn and be entertained at the same time!

He is the reason I switched to Anthropology/Archaeology as my major. Lots to read, but gives great lectures. Read, complete your work, and attend class you will do fine. Makes archaeology and anthro relevant. He is the reason City has the best community college archaeology program in the greater San Diego region, better then some 4 year schools.

I was anxious starting Phys Anthro due to the science, and can say that the class is challenging... Take solid notes, ask questions,and read the chapters well! Prof.B expects quality from us, and wants us to learn. He is unique, has a lot of world/life experience, and is a terrific person- one of the all time, best professors.

Great Professor. He really likes to lecture, and he knows the material very well. He will teach using stories, and that makes it easier to understand. If you are interested in the subject you will love it by the end of the course. I highly recommend his course. He is flexible if you are late for a test, I saw a few students taking a test late.

First of all, I do not know why B. has such good ratings because his class was AWFUL. He is disorganized and all over the place. He rarely writes things down so note taking is difficult. And worst of all, his material is not on the test! I swear he pulls random info out of his a$$ and writes it on the test. Takes him forever to grade stuff. Ugh!

I agree with the previous statement. Not a good Prof. Talks non-stop about his own politics and how crappy the US is instead of the subject matter. And, as an example of how his disorganization hits students- a project was due. We all got it back, and I mean, every student, a grade lower because we didn't include a graph. their was no graph reqrm

Give you outlines for every test! If you think his classes are hard, then you are actually learning something! Very inspirational and memorable teachings. I highly recommend any Anthro class from this prof. He is a great professor.

Well, He is a nice teacher overall. He talks fast and you have to pay attention to whatever he lectures cos you WILL see that on the test. Study and do all extra credit assignments, you would get an easy A.

Bouscaren is a pretty smart guy, but his class is a little disorganized. He took forever to get assignments back and skips around a lot during lecture. The book isn't mandatory as EVERYTHING is from the lecture. He did cram 3 tests into the last week which was stressful. But there is plenty of extra credit.

Prof. Bouscaren is a really cool guy and REALLY knows his stuff. Very mild-mannered and very approachable. However, he's by no means a pushover and WILL fail you if you give zero effort. You will pass his class as long as you try.

Very challenging UC prep course. A lot of hard work. Exams are harder than just reading the book. Great prof, helpful, and cares. Be prepared for lecture from day one until the final. I got an 89 overall and that's exactly what he gave me, a B. Looking back, his class was a defining moment in that every class after this I was ready for.

Engaged the students well. Had many interesting anecdotes to supplement the lectures with. Took this as a night class during the summer (back in the days) and he didn't put me to sleep at all!

It's only the second week and each class drags on and on... his lectures are all over the place, he has no visuals to supplement his lectures. This class is just a drag and he enforces pop quizzes, midterms, finals.

His lectures are very clear and knows his stuff! He is very helpful and is the kind of teacher that wants you to ask questions. I personally loved his class and teaching skills. Easy and straight to the point. It is interesting at times but also kinda slow, depending on what chapter you're on. Overall a great teacher and fairly easy class.

Test questions are strangely written but otherwise all the material is discussed in class. If you take good notes you probably won't need the text to pass the class (he requires the latest version so they aren't always made available outside purchase). He even occasionally asks specific test questions during lecture, so pay attention.

I hate biology so I took this class. Am I happy I did. He is a professor that makes you think about our past and how it relates to our future. The book at best is a study guide and will help with take-home tests (which he does if we fall behind). You must show up for class for the lectures. He is a superb lecturer and makes the info interesting.

Very interesting material, difficult at times. Great lectures. Accessible, tries his best to answer your questions. Genuinely wants you to understand the material. Realizes the material can be a little tricky. Take home exams were tough but fair. Don't skip, every lecture counts. If you put in the work there is no reason you couldn't earn an A.

He's a little soft-spoken so sit near the front if your hearing is not so good. He's really interesting and has a lot of unique experiences in archelogical/anthropological stuff. He also has a good sense of humor; and he brings interesting stuff to class to show you.

Wouldn't take again

Since he has Parkinsons he cant write so what I had to do in the last few weeks was récord his lectures so thats i could fill out the study sheets/take home tests. If you go over your tests especially the last ones or last one youll get a good grade on final. And if you record from day one every chapter lecture youll also get good grade n tests

Professor Bouscaren is a nice guy. I took his class with honors. He provided us lecture guidelines and he follows it pretty well during our actual lectures. Print it or look through it on your devices during lecture. For honors, he will ask what you want to do ( I did research Paper and powerpoint). He gives many extra credits as well.
