worst professor ever. doesn't know his material at all. attempts to use material from the book, but either explains or copies it wrong. will admit quickly to errors (even though the person correcting him may be wrong) because the probability that he made the error is so high that he's better off to admitting to it first. get Kaag for disc section
Hes alright, kind of boring and not great at explaining the texts.
the above comments are definitely true, but the reason why i rate him low is because of the non-math or problem based discussions. he really asked us what we thought the origin of things was, without much elaboration, then made fun of us for not being good philosophers and responding. philsophy is discussion, not piping out answers meaninglessly.
Don't understand why others are bashing on him. He knows his stuff and does a good job digging at what philosophy is all about.
Brence is a great guy. Really funny, extremely passionate about his subject. I definitely suggest taking one of his courses.
Prof. Brence likes to talk alot but goes out fo his way to make office hours and extra voluntary discussion sessions. He is fair with grading papers and not opposed to adjusting the syllabus depending on how the class is going.
I am somewhat taken aback and in truth, embarrassed by some of the presumptuous comments already made here at the expense of prof. Brence. His commitment to the philosophical practice and its cultivation among new minds is apparent for anyone who takes a meaningful interest in their own studies. Right on if not above par with U of O's phil. dep.
Excellent teacher, really cares about students and their learning.
Great teacher!
Interesting prof. Hard class, but he made it lively. Good points but occasionally was hard to follow. Did make me want to take more philosophy classes!
You need to be pretty good at writing a solid essay. If you can do that, you'll be fine.
Provocative lectures, smart guy, can get a bit convoluted at times, but that is to be expected with most philosophy.
Great teacher, really nice guy and fantastic at lecturing. I learned a lot in Philosophy of Film.
The most interesting lecturer I've had as a professor. Very intelligent and knows what he's talking about. Not a very labor-intensive course (two 5 page essays and a final). A lot of readings but they're interesting.
Very intelligent teacher..Leads students by inquiry...Class participation is key, as is attendance and doing the readings...The theories of reality class is tough in regards to the abstract content, so you need to pay attention, but otherwise he only requires three papers over the course, no final save for the third paper.
He knows what he is talking about but does not always explain it in the easiest terms to understand. His GTF's help a ton though. The only thing I do not like about this course is how much printing and reading is required. I have wasted so much paper on things I will never look at again. Digital copies in class would be awesome.
Boring lectures with random side notes that did not pertain to the actual lecture.
Very funny and pretty clear as far as philosophy teachers go. Really nice guy and great speaker.
Lectures were incredibly boring and his slides made no sense and didn't relate to the readings most of the time. The GTF's that he has are great and really help to clear anything up that was confusing (usually every lecture with Brence.) Good class, but will kill any interest in Philosophy for you and bore you to tears.
I really enjoyed the class, but it's a lot more rewarding if you actually participate in in-class discussions. Essay prompts give a lot of room to go whichever route you want to, which depending on how you feel about writing is either really good or really bad. There's no textbook, just PDFs, but you HAVE to do the readings.
Professor Brence is incredibly bright and cares a lot about philosophy. His class has a pseudo-required attendance because you are required to turn in a reading reflection each class. And he doesn't give you the reading prompt if you missed class. 3 Essays and one for the final. Essay prompts are wordy and very hard to understand.
Awesome prof, very intelligent and knowledgable on a huge scope of topics. Choses readings and films strategically. You should attend class, and engage in discussion or you wont get much out of the course. He tends to rant and share is opinions widely. Not necessarily an issue. Overall such an engaging and manageable (work load) course.
Professor Brence doesn't want to teach you how to get a great job. He wants to teach you how to lose a terrible job. He wants you to care about your integrity. He wants you to question the status quo and the easy path. He wants you to actually consider your life's purpose or lack of purpose. This class will make you think, if you let it. Try it!
Dr. Brence is very passionate about what he teaches. The readings are sometimes long and difficult, but lecture explains them very well. I would recommend taking a class with him, because he is willing to work over complicated notions with you. Overall, the course has 3 essays and while they can be a bit tricky, good grades are attainable.
Daily assignments but only graded on completion. Nice teacher.
I liked Steven (he sparked my interest in Philosophy), however sometimes he does get off topic and boring. The class itself was interesting if the discussion didn't go off on a tangent. The daily assignments he gives you are based on completion, but if you want to do well I would make sure you read as your more likely to do well on the essays.
Great professor! Sometimes can get off topic but otherwise his lectures stayed very interesting due to his goofy humor. Make sure to attend class and do the readings/practice work and youll do great!
Steven himself is absolutely amazing, he feels kind of a sarcastic and judgey grandpa but who will still make you laugh in class. There's no textbook, just lots of articles and a few movies but i used free trials on amazon and didn't need to pay for anything ! quality class and i really enjoyed it
Brence was super moody about people getting up and going to the bathroom. In a lecture of about 100 people? Just keep lecturing please. I never got up, even if I had to use the restroom. He also would continue to lecture after class was over and was moody (once again) if we packed our stuff up. Even if lecture was supposed to have ended. Lame.
Professor Brence is brilliant and cares deeply about helping students to understand the texts, which are difficult but enlightening. Do your reading, go to class, ask questions when you have them amd you'll do great!
Brence is a brilliant guy and explores philosophic ideas in a pretty unique way. That being said, you do have to pay close attention in order to follow what he's saying. If you're ready to do the readings and commit, being in his class will be very rewarding. Definitely take advantage of his office hours. Also talks about music and his cat a lot :)
I took Brence's logic class and really enjoyed it. He's a great lecturer, although the subject material is by nature somewhat dry. He has a relaxed grading policy; he let us replace our midterm grade with our score on that content on the final. Very accomodating.
This is was my first philosophy class, and it was definitely interesting. It is very clear that Steven loves teaching and loves philosophy, but for me it was hard to learn anything from someone who just gets philosophy in a way that I dont. I honestly learned more from YouTube summaries of readings sometimes.
If you want a good grade in his class it's important to do the reading, it especially helps a lot with understanding the material and the exams (midterm/final) rely heavily on it. If you attempt the practice problems in the reading youll be so grateful (answers are in back of book) plus they help when doing the hw. Hes amazing, I def. recommend.
Prof Brence is a really cool and engaging guy. Despite the challenges of online learning, he seems to be able to actually teach us something. There's a lot of readings but most of them are shorter than 15 pages and you can skim them just for a couple of details to put in your biweekly discussion post.
I would highly recommend taking a philosophy class with Prof Brence. He's extremely engaging and brings very relevant issues and topics to his lectures. I liked that our homework wasn't just solely reading and writing but also watching movies and listening to podcasts. I firmly believe that I'm coming out of his class with a different perspective.
This class was super interesting and consisted of lectures, discussion board posts, papers, and a discussion section. The lectures were 1 hour and were easy to understand. 4 papers, three different activities relating to each. One final paper that wasn't too difficult. The overall class is easyish, just put in the work.
I really enjoyed this class with professor Brence. He is very attentive and genuinely wants students to succeed. He always makes time to talk outside of class and is always down for a deep conversation. Class is definitely mandatory though and he values participation a lot.
I have taken 2 of prof Brence's classes and they consist of 2 weekly discussion posts and 3 essays for the whole term. The essays are not very difficult, but each one is worth 20% of your grade. The discussion posts are another 20% and participation is the last 20%. Attendance is mandatory for discussion sections. Overall, he is nice & a good prof
This professor is just a really cool guy. He expects you to work hard but is very reasonable.
Confusing lectures that always go 3-5 minutes past the end of class, grades very hard for a 100 level class, 3 discussion posts & readings per week and very arrogant speaker at times.
Prof Brence was overall a good teacher and interesting lecturer. I liked the topics we discussed and the fact we watched two movies. There were 3 discussion posts a week and three essays. Grading depends on your GE but I liked mine. The annoying thing was that talking in class was intimidating and he sometimes kept us over time.
60% of the grade is on 3 essays. 20% is on canvas discussion posts that you get all the points by doing them. The other 20% is on participation by showing up and interacting in the discussion section of the classroom
Clear on expectations, class structure is easy to follow. Brence is very opinionated, he could talk all day if you let him. Overall very amusing and gives interesting interpretations of the text, just have to sit through "teasers" of his political opinions first to get to the stuff you actually need to know.
I enjoyed most of the films he picked out, but boy is this guy arrogant. He babbles nonstop about his opinions and although you can raise your hand to participate, he often dismisses people who have different takes than him. His lectures are often rambling and get off-topic. Class is great if you like film and philosophy, the teacher not so much.
Overall good professor and interesting lectures. Some people may find him a bit mean because he is opinionated and will say if he disagrees with you, but personally, I don't think he is a rude person. I liked all the movies we watched. Most of your grade is based on two essays and weekly discussion posts. This class can be time-consuming.
Professor Brence is overall just a snobby person. He offended a different person in class probably every lecture. If you try to disagree with his logic or say something that he doesn't believe, he will simply tell you that you are wrong and embarras you in front of the whole class, by going on a tangent. Homework often doesn't make a lot of sense.
He's a nice guy but the only reason I have a low rating was that he said something about having a special connection to MLK because one of his post-grad/graduate advisors went to the same school as MLK which seemed kind of tone-deaf/fake activism. Other than that all good and an easy class with all the basics for business ethics.
Steven is a genuine guy and knows most people in the class aren't philo majors. He will change your perspective on life if you really dig in to the class. The timing of assignments is odd but the workload is light. He comes off as rude but is often just pushing your thinking deeper. First class I've ever taken that changed how I think.
great professor!
For someone who makes a career of studying different interpretations of the world, he is impressively good at not listening to others' perspectives. In theory I would have loved the class, but his lectures took away all my interest in the topics. Class is also ridiculously easy, essays took no more than 2 hours and I only lost points for lateness.
As someone who loves pop culture, this class was not at all what I expected. The lectures were boring and I found that he belittled and beefed with students during his lectures. Essays were easy to write, some GEs will grade easy while others will take grading more seriously. I loved my GE though, Waldeck. He made the topics enjoyable to discuss.
This is a good intro philosophy course. There are daily discussions on canvas that are short and easy but he posts the prompt in class so you either need to come to class or have someone send it to you. There are 3 essays that I found pretty easy but you definitely should take some time on them. No final either. Friday discussion was easy too.
He's kinda condescending in lectures when students make comments, and he only posts the homework questions in class so if you're not there you're out of luck. The readings are really wordy, but that may apply to all philosophy classes. I think a lot depends on if you get a good GE for your discussion section
Whole class is basically just an embarrassing argument between the teacher and students.
This professor is funny and engaging during his lectures, although, he sometimes allows the full class discussion derail the lecture, which can be annoying, if you are in lecture to get a better understanding of the material. He did have an incredibly well-organized canvas that is easy to navigate. beware, his essays are due middays on the weekends
The class wasn't all too hard but man this guy was bad, like real bad. The homework was always due at the weirdest time i.e. 9am on Monday and Friday morning... whats up with that prof. Worst part are the lectures though, he basically tries to get class discussion going and has crazy takes about these movies. Easy class but boring.
I personally really liked this class! The only issue would be the reading. There are 3 books that we read, & they are very dense/heavy. Some chapters are over 50 pages! Get ready to read! Easy grader. 3 papers & a reading response before every class. If you go to class & work hard you will be okay. Thinks his opinion is the only valid one though...
I had wanted to take this class since my freshman year and going into it, now as a junior, I was excited for this class. After having a mental health crisis this term, however, Dr Brence failed me for missing more than 5 classes. If you want a professor with human decency and understanding, it seems Steven Brence is not the one for you.
Very thorough and does a good job creating organization in the class. The only complaint I have is that he makes us do lecture specific assignments before class, and then the lecture is all just him discussing what we already learned in order to submit the assignment.
Material was overall very easy but I have to say the class was complete bullsh*t. Although the course description says "pop culture" get ready to only talk about stuff from the early 1900's. Also his lectures are just him rambling about Trump.
He's smart and passionate, but I wouldn't recommend this class. Long lectures (no phones/laptops), repetitive discussions, lots of reading, and boring films. I skipped discussions (Socratic seminars) and used ChatGPT for Canvas posts. Easy A with short papers, but he started taking attendance randomly after not doing so earlier, which was annoying.
Search up "pretentious philosopher". a portrait of him should be the first thing you see. easy class. theres only like 3 essays + 2 paragraphs per week as homework. but his lectures and essay prompts are terrible. he has you explain how HIS view is correct instead of letting you give your own. overall, couldnt stand this man. loved my ge tho
He is the most pessimistic man I have ever seen. His prompts reflect that for the essays which force you into siding with him. 3 essays over the semester and 2 paragraphs a week which are not harsh. The GEs are good. Added attendence midway which sucked.
I liked the material that Brence taught and it was a really eye-opening course. However, I wish we learned about the material before we had homework assigned. I don't like how we learn about it after we've done the work already. I also wish we could use technology in his class, but that's just based on my preference.
I enjoyed this course more than I thought I would. It's definitely more "math-based" than philosophy (which I liked) so keep that in mind. The lectures closely follow the textbook, so reading the assigned section and doing the practice problems before lectures makes them easier to follow. Plus, the exams were open-textbook which was amazing.
Class, Canvas page very well-organized. Very reachable if you need help or just wanna talk. The assigned reading is pretty interesting! His lectures were pretty easy to follow, but sometimes skips over some stuff. Grading was TA-run. First reading of class was the hardest. Doesn't fight w students, just introduces not-universally-accepted ideas.
I personally did not enjoy this course. Lot of readings/movies to be completed outside of class along with discussions. The course is basically a criticism of pop culture which I was not expecting. I did not notice or experience the fighting with students that many other reviews mentioned. He's kind and it's an easy A if you're looking for that.
Dr. Brence provides really interesting media sources for philosophical engagement and the essays and lectures are really insightful. And on top of all that, I was never not at least semi entertained and engaged by the lectures and material.
Class is kinda fun, pop culture critique and hating on bag chasers
Brence himself is a funny guy who slyly hints at his marxist belief system until we read marx. However, get ready for an all time snoozer. Always goes over time limit and repeatedly calls out those who are on any devices. Class consists of 3 easy papers and Brence being purposely overanalytical with 2-3 other philosophy geeks. Easy A nonetheless.
This guy is the goat. such a funny fella. knows what hes teaching and teaches it well. He also drinks out of a mason jar.
Expects his time to be respected when he can't respect his students time, constantly goes overtime and WILL call you out if you're on your phone/have headphones in. Close-minded, will expect people to share their views/thoughts, yet he diverts their views back to his. Do not take this class if you're new to philosophy, don't start with this guy.
Very enjoyable! If you are interested in Philosophy, you must take him. Even if you're not, take him. He is passionate about what he teaches, its very refreshing. He cares very much and he is extremely funny and enjoyable to learn from. Do nottt pull out your phone in class or be stuck on your computer, he will call you out!
Light work load, there was assigned reading but you never had to do them, nor did you have to take any notes
Professor Brence just made me mad on occasion. He would ask the lecture hall a question expecting a certain answer, and he would then brush off a student's train of thought. He also shows one modern movie, but I think the class could benefit from a few more or even just a movie he doesn't like.
Horrible Boring lectures never listens to students
His lectures were very dry and hard to sit through. He doesn't let you take notes on any electronic device and will call you out if he catches you using one. He also mandates that everyone sit in the first few rows of class to be counted for attendance. Overall, not the worst class but definitely would not recommend taking.
Dr. Brence changes the syllabus and assignments throughout the quarter - he turned a paper into a test, makes you move your seats around and changed how he graded participation. He was unpredictable and not encouraging of students who disagreed with him. This class is very stressful and demanding for an introductory class in Philosophy.
His lectures weren't engaging and made it hard to participate. He'd brush off comments that didn't match what he wanted. He expected us to respect his time but often went over class time without caring. The only thing that made this class bearable was my GE (shoutout Jonanthan). Attendance is mandatory.
Steven said that being creative is as difficult as giving birth.
Professor Brence was an amazing Formal Logic professor. I wouldn't want anyone else to teach it. While he does not take attendance, class is mandatory. You will be lost if you miss a single lecture as every concept is cumulative. He makes a daunting subject satisfying and challenging
I can't really blame him for not liking his class, it's the people in the class that like to drone on.
Brence is closed minded and ignores any opinion that negates his. He says he has a no-penalty absence policy of up to 4 days, but he grades based on attendance? If you don't turn in a reflection notecard at the beginning of class your grade legitimately drops 5 points, and he doesn't allow you to make them up. Loved my GE though S/O Kiley.
He says he loves class participation, but as soon as you disagree with him, you get shut down immediately. I was not a huge fan of this class, simply because he was super pessimistic about everything.
During the first half of first class all of the students were looking around confused if this teacher was real. Every single lecture we have, just wants to convince students that his negative thoughts and views are the correct and right way to think about things. He cuts students off to go on tangents to prove them wrong and is so pessimistic.
I was terrified of Formal Logic but Dr. Brence made it make sense. Still a difficult class but if you apply yourself, you'll succeed. He is also very entertaining and has a good but dry sense of humor.
One of the worst electives I've taken. Attendance required, but lectures were confusing and mostly tangents. Brence ignored questions he didn't like, and even our GE knew he was crazy and had to reteach the material for us to understand every week. I rarely knew what he was talking about but maybe he didn't either.
he's actually really sweet, but you have to get on his good side because I can see how other people don't like him. it was a little frustrating that he didn't grade anything and would redirect you to the GE for questions but if you really need to talk, he will. I found him interesting but nice.
