Prof. Butler is a very knowledgeable teacher who cares about his students. He orients the homework around his exams, so you've seen it all by the time the tests come around. Also includes alot of Math humor in his class, he's a funny guy anyway...
One of the best math teachers I've had
If you have Butler, be prepared for some hard tests! In the end he curves everything and you will be prepared for the final if you go to class. He is one of the best teachers I've had at Iowa State. Very clear lectures and throws in some humor. A class where you need to go to class but you actually learn something.
What everyone else said that was positive
Dr. Butler is, in my opinion, one of the best math teachers at Iowa State! You can really tell that he loves math and wants everyone to love it as well. I would recommend taking any of his classes, but be prepared for amusing stories and anecdotes!
Super helpful and genuinely caring! He is funny, and prepares you well. Our class was much more prepared for final than any other section! I have had good math instructors before, but he is the best!
This guy was hilarious. He really made calc 3 easy to understand and pain free. He's a silly guy, but that makes his class that much more enjoyable. A lot of math profs understand the material, but have no idea how to teach. He knows the stuff and how to teach it. Plus he's got a wicked beard.
Very funny, easygoing, and an enormously good teacher. The tests are difficult but the grading policy is very lenient. He's a funny guy and makes me like learning as much as he clearly likes teaching. Can confirm that his beard is wicked.
Prof Butler definitely raised my interest and enthusiasm levels in combinatorics and math. He covers the material at an even pace at an appropriate level, is responsive to student questions, and has fun stories and math problems to share.
hilarious!
he's hilarious if you undrestand underlining math suttleties
Dr. Butler is funny, engaging, and truly cares about how well his students are learning. His lectures are very well planned and he is more than happy to stop for questions. Dr. Butler clearly is interested in providing the best education i n mathematics that he possibly can and his passion for the subject shines through this trait.
Genuinely funny and teaches very clearly. I now enjoy math.
Dr. Butler is by far the best teacher I've ever had in college. If you work hard, you'll get the grade. Get ready for his sweetness.
Excellent teacher; Butler made a difficult class fun and easy to understand.
Great Teacher overall. I learned a lot about psychology and criminal justices from taking Math 265. Would take the class again in 3 dimensions!
I just hope that next semester I have a class that I'm half a excited to show up for. Butler was tough but fair, and extremely helpful in how simply great of a teacher he was. Also, shoutout to his SI leaders.
The best professor I've had at Iowa State. Highly recommend him for those that struggle. He makes the lectures easy to understand and fun with his jokes.
Butler is a fantastic teacher, he's hilarious and actually makes class enjoyable. Tests are difficult but are curved at the end of the semester.
Butler gives great lectures with very detailed notes. He is also really funny, so that makes the lectures more enjoyable. However, the average on all of the tests are around 50-60%, but it's hard to be mad at him with how nice of a guy he is. Hard tests, but they do get curved. Weekly quizzes with 2 random questions from 10 given in advance.
tl;dr, great professor, will break your spirit with his tests, and lectures are great. I was a young lad, and thought to myself, "why this Butler fellow seems like a swell gentleman.". For in fact, Butler will be one of the best teachers that you learn from. But be warned, this class is not for those of weak constitution, the tests..; JUST DO IT!
Steve Butler is one of the best professors I have ever had. If any engineer is reading this take his course before or during physics because you will ace physics. Funny, respectful and the best lecture notes I've ever seen. I give my friends in UOI, NIU, and UCLA his lecture notes; that's how good he is. TAKE PRACTICE EXAMS AND YOU'LL DO WELL!!!
Overall, Butler just sucks. He's hard, not clear at all with what he expects from you and what percent you need to get to get a certain grade. Overall, he just sucks. Stay clear. He also didn't care about how much you knew. He only cared if you represented it how he wanted it written. I received As in both Calc 1 and Calc 2.
Dr. Butler is great. By far one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very funny which makes lectures interesting. Not a whole lot of homework. The only downside is that the tests are extremely hard, but the class has a fairly generous curve. Dr. Butler cares about his students.
Dr. Butler is funny and explains concepts very well. However, his tests and quizzes are extremely difficult. His Calc 1 class consists of weekly homework, weekly quizzes, and 4 in-class tests, in addition to a departmental midterm.
Eh. Did not enjoy the class
Steve is... just not great. He can be funny, but tries a little hard sometimes and it gets lame. His teaching is strange.
I took Calculus I with Steve Butler. He is very knowledgeable and knows exactly what he's talking about. He's a bit of an odd character but it's sometimes entertaining. We had weekly quizzes with the problems, hints, and answers given to us in advance. If you don't know how to do the quiz problems, I strongly recommend going into his office hours.
Great professor! Hard tests but makes up for it with very generous curves. I never looked at the book so you might want to hold off on buying it. He puts all his lectures online so you can go back and look at them. Very accessible for office hours and very helpful when studying for quizes.
Fantastic Prof! Hard tests, but there's a wicked curve. Take the time to go to office hours. You won't use your book. You will laugh at his 'jokes.' Weekly quizzes are difficult, but he goes over everything thoroughly (again, go to office hours).
Great guy to have a difficult class with.
Professor Butler is hilarious! He writes really hard tests, but gives plenty of resources to prepare. If you prepare well for tests, your test score might still be low, but your end grade will be fine.
Butler was a great professor. Very difficult tests however. Attend office hour for quiz help. (it'll save your grade.)
You wont know if you passed until you get your final grade, but you can rest easy knowing that you are still better than everyone else who doesn't have Prof Butler. He has a sweet YouTube channel as well so check it out!
I loved this class! Professor Butler challenges his students, but you will get so much out of the class. Be prepared to take weekly quizzes, and 4 in class tests that will scare you! Go to office hours and do practice tests and you'll do great! There is a curve. He is a wonder guy and he is super funny! You'll be glad you had him as an educator:)
Tests are ridiculously hard, but he bumps up all the scores at the end
Incredibly hard class, especially for Calc 1. I did however get a ton out of the class and am currently taking Calc 2 with him this semester. His tests (all 4 or 5 of them excluding the midterm and final) were all very hard but god bless that curve. It's hard to know how you're doing in the class because he doesn't give letter grades until the end.
Great funny and engaging teacher
Dr. Butler is an astounding professor and one that you can very easily get along with. He is an EXTREMELY difficult test writer, but it is for your benefit! He provides a crazy amount of office hours and private time that you can meet with him and he explains things so clearly. He and Arctan are a great couple. I really recommend Butler. 10/10
Tests are difficult but pay attention to the average not the letter grade. Good teacher, kind of goofy but in a good way.
I have had Dr. Butler for Calc I and II. I absolutely love his teaching style. Lectures are very straight forward and easy to follow. His tests are no joke though. Prepare to prepare, my friend. Your grade might seem bad at first, but he has a unique curving system that helps a lot. Super nice guy and always willing to help. Definitely recommend!
Keeps you engaged in lectures, makes them entertaining. Makes you want to learn more, however, his way of thinking through problems isn't exactly clear. Repitition of concepts and examples is key.
Good professor. Engaging. Really loves writing hard tests. He has this force you to learn by making the class average a 55% and scaring you kind of idea. It works. I don't think I would take another class with him though because the work to knowledge of calculus ratio seems really high with 7 tests and 13 quizzes overall in a semester.
Easily one of the nicest professors I've met. His tests are difficult but the average is typically around 50-60% stay above that and the curve will work out in your favor. I did not open the book the entire semester. Take detailed notes and you will be fine. Always go to his office hours for the quiz reviews as these problems will come up again.
Top notch professor. Very good lectures. He cares about the well being of the student and how they do. Very nice man.
Dr. Butler has really great lectures that he posts online. Overall a good teacher. Very frustrating at times because his tests are very hard. If you prepare well and go to class the tests are manageable. Class is curved a decent amount but prepare well for tests.
Butler is a great professor, but don't be afraid of your grade. Butler gives EXTREMELY hard tests (Where 50% is average) but curves the entire class. Once you learn this, then you don't need to be afraid as long as you are putting in the work to succeed. Also, one test gets dropped which helps a lot. You want to understand the material, take Butler
Very great professor. I, unfortunately, wasn't putting in the work I should have been so I had to drop the class, but I can see if you want to learn the material, he wants you to learn it just as bad. Great professor with a friendly, inviting environment. Also, his office hours are incredible, really dedicated professor.
Very difficult tests and quizzes but good lecturer. Good luck on final or midterm if you do not take your class with Butler.
This was by far my favorite prof and class so far. He is GREAT outside of class helping with hw or preparing for the weekly quizzes. He kept the lectures interesting and he was great at drawing the 3D components which was super helpful for me. Told lots of jokes too. Definitely expects an effort from his students but he is there to help you.
Butler's lectures are funny and interesting, and he is good at explaining the material in a way that doesn't leave you panic-stricken. His tests are very hard (scores average just a little above 50%), but they are curved. Butler provides practice tests in class, which really helped me prepare for his tests.
Helpful. Really cares about his students.
His test are difficult, but your grade is based off the standard deviation to the mean so failing the class is pretty difficult. He cares about his students and is very helpful during his office hours. He really gets you to understand the material. Best math professor at Iowa State.
Butler is an amazing teacher. He posts all of his lectures online, which are extremely easy to learn from. His exams are really hard, but the average is always low. I got a D+ my first time taking Calc 3 (with a different professor) and really never understood anything. With Butler I actually understood what I was learning. Best math guy at ISU.
Posts lectures online so even if you don't have his lecture you can still watch it via youtube.
Give Steve the chili pepper
Best teacher ever
Steve requires you to understand the concepts instead of just plugging numbers in
Professor Butler is by no means easy. He teaches tough subjects, and he is very thorough in how he tests. Be prepared for very low test scores and to put alot of work in. He recently started putting his lectures on youtube which is very helpful especially since his notes are prewritten and it is easy to miss things in class.
Steve Butler is one of the most engaging professors I've had the pleasure of taking a class with at ISU. The difficult material is clearly explained and understandable. You can tell Butler puts a lot of effort into his lectures. The tests are some of the hardest Ive taken at ISU however. Make sure to really study the quiz problems and practice.
350 characters isnt enough for this glorious man. Perhaps the best Calc professor Ive had, 2nd to Dr. Lee. His lectures are captivating as well as informative, while writing fair tests that challenge you. He has a YouTube channel that is a huge help and gives quiz questions ahead of time which train you to understand the material. 10/10 Amazing.
Butler teaches Calculus in an amazing way that is easy for those who struggle to understand. He has office hours every week where he goes over the answers to his quiz questions. His tests are tough, but the whole class is curved so if you get a 60 or 70 on a test youre doing well.
PHENOMENAL teacher. Explains concepts clearly. Makes you work for your grade. Funny lectures. My favorite teacher at ISU
Hands down one of the best professors at ISU. Very funny and very knowledgeable. As usual his exams are very difficult but attend his office hours and you will do well. Cherish your time with Dr. Butler. He is a true gem. I had him for Calc 1 in Fall 2016, for Calc II in Spring 2017, and now for Calc III in Fall 2017. I truly love this guy.
What isn't there to say about this phenomenal man? One of the best professors in the entire university. He is brilliant, hilarious, and caring. ISU is truly lucky to have him. I cannot stress this enough--go to his office hours!
Steve Butler made A very hard class bearable. If you have a chance to take a class with Butler then you NEED TO TAKE IT WITH HIM!!
The class is very difficult but Butler made the class tolerable. I attended his lecture because he was a million times better than the professor I was scheduled to have.
Butler is the best math professor I have had. He explains concepts very well, and you can tell he puts work into his lectures to help students understand. Going into his office hours was always beneficial and helped with the quizzes. He cares about his students, Math, and helping his student understand math. Truly one of a kind.
very attractive
Beautiful man, beautiful beard. His math sermons are unparalleled, and brings enlightenment to the masses. His lectures are online too for unlimited access. Beware his tricks and KNOW ARCTAN AND THE NUMBER 137, the mark of the Butler, and you shall pass.
The Philosopher Steven Butler is one of the greatest math thinkers of our time. This titan of mathematics is a champion of wit and humor. If you don't laugh or at least grin at his jokes, you do not have a soul. His beard is proof of his wisdom, and his exams ensure you of his majestic proficiency in mathematics. Know ARCTAN and the number 137.
Butler is the best professor I have had at ISU, period (took 165, 166, 265 with him). If you have a chance to take a class with him, do it! Lectures are incredible. Weekly quizzes will seem daunting at first, but are very good at preparing you for exams. Go to office hours if you need help. Very accessible. Genuinely wants his students to succeed.
Steve Butler is a great math instructor who genuinely cares about his students. His lectures set a standard of quality that's hard to top. His class is not easy, but very rewarding. Don't expect him to change your grade, his material is purposefully difficult to judge your overall knowledge. He is very approachable and witty.
Steve Butler is a little goony, but he is one of the best professors I have ever had. I was really struggling with the professor I enrolled in. Then I started going to Butler's lectures and everything started making sense. Highly suggest taking his class.
He really tests your knowledge and understanding, but is so accessible and his exam preparations are top notch. He give you everything you need to be successful, its up to you to utilize it.
If you have the opportunity to take a class with Prof Butler do it, you wont regret it! ARCTAN is a beautiful function
Lectures are terrible. His tests do not reflect the material and are written for students to fail.
Steve Butler is the best math professor I've had. He's caring, funny, and makes math interesting. I'm someone who really hates math, but when I started attending Steve's lectures the passion he has really rubs off and makes you want to do better.
Everyone is so amazed by Steve Butler, and yes his lectures are better than some and he is funny, but he makes the exams so much harder than they need to be and filled with tricky questions and I think a lot of people forget that. He is the reason why so many grades suffer in calc.
Steve Butler was the best professor I've ever had. He is always in a positive, cheerful mood. It's clear that he has an extreme passion for math and he loves teaching students. He keeps students engaged and makes the class even more enjoyable by adding jokes into lectures. Yes, the exams are challenging (&curved), but he does this because he cares.
Great Teacher, makes hard test
Steve is one of the better lecturers for Calculus, he posts his lectures on YouTube and makes the material understandable. He writes difficult questions into the exams that make you think, however they are not unfair since they are over material that he covers in class. With the curve, his class is very do-able.
Wonderful professor who cares about his students and their mathematical skills. Gives hard tests but they are curved to make up for it. Overall wonderful experience.
Great lecturer--he makes the concepts easier to understand, does lots of good examples to solidify the concepts, and adds lots of jokes to keep listeners engaged. Exams can be difficult, but there is a curve.
Prof. Butler doesn't write every problem on the calc exams, take that from me who's done research with him. And no matter which teacher you have, you'll have the same exam as everyone else. Lectures are amazing, and he makes calculus so easy to understand. He's entertaining and makes me excited about my math major. He is THE BEST calc teacher ever.
Never have felt worse about myself in my entire life. I maybe cried over this 10+ times. Confidence level was destroyed which is the ultimate goal of this class. Be prepared to be more stressed in your entire life. No class should ever be this difficult. Even my tutors were confused and said their years at calc before these exams were way easier.
Best calc professor you'll get at ISU. He goes at a good pace and explains things very well. He's also kind of funny and is considered a legend.
Cant really avoid him since he coordinates all the Calc classes. Makes tests way harder than needed. And really the class is set up so that even if you dont understand anything you can still pass the class, as long as you do better than the bottom 25% of students. Cant really say I understand the setup, but a way funny guy who loves math.
Professor Butler makes math very interesting. His explanations are always above and beyond. He thinks of creative ways to help students visualize what is happening/going on. He is always open to help and even if he doesn't have office hours you most likely can go in and ask him about a problem or two, or concepts :)
I had a different professor but just ended up going to Butler because I found myself watching his lectures online anyway. Steve is a great professor and if you put in the work, you can get a 60/60 on the exams. The exams are hard but Steve hold weekend review sessions to help students and gives us access to past exams. Great guy and great class.
Rather than go to my assigned professor's lectures I stayed home and watched Steve's recorded lectures. After taking the calc series at ISU I cannot recommend enough that you look elsewhere. I reached the end of the gauntlet thanks to the curve and doing well on homework. According to exam histograms, you might not. Here be dragons. Heed my warning
Steve Butler is a gift from heaven. This is my first semester having the opportunity to attend his lectures for Calculus. He generally cares about students. Although exams are tough sometimes, studying past exams and quizzes, will help you succeed. Go to office hours if all else fails!
Literally the hardest class I have ever taken. That being said, I still think he is one of the best professors I have ever gotten a chance to have. The tests are extremely difficult and there's homework three times a week (which isn't that bad).
STEVE IS THE MATH GOD. BOW DOWN TO HIM
An absolute god at calculus and down right the best professor I have ever had. Explains everything well and throughly and make the class interesting.
Butler is amazing. He makes the lectures extremely enjoyable. I really enjoyed having him to start my day. There does seem to be quite a bit of homework on MyMathLab, but I don't mind the extra practice.
Solid mathematics professor
Butler was a great professor. I'm writing this as a warning to future students: study outside of class. If you don't get a problem, work until you know it. I didn't, and this class kicked my booty. Butler was an amazing professor, I just didn't take time outside the class to learn his material.
You will not regret riding the B U T L E R W A V E
This man is a true lecture genius. He makes math interesting and ... fun? Never thought I'd say that but I think it's actually true. He knows everything he talks about like the back of his hand and knows exactly how to explain things to make them easy to understand.
Great professor, really one of the best I have had in my lifetime.
The man himself, Steve, inspired me to love mathematics. Also conveniently active on reddit!
Butler is an amazing professor who can help almost anyone learn calculus. He is extremely down to earth and one of the nicest professors I have ever had. His knowledge and love for the subject shines through when he teaches and I probably wouldn't have been able to pass without his help.
The exams are hard, but he knows they are hard and they are well written. His lectures are amazing, and he records them and uploads them to youtube so you can rewatch them at any time. The quizzes are also extremly hard but he gives you a bank of questions that the quiz might have. I recommend getting in a group to work them out in advance.
The absolute greatest professor of all time. It is obvious he cares so much about his students and wants them to succeed. He makes lectures interesting with his humor, analogies, stories, and examples. Tests are challenging, and he knows that, but if put in the work, you will get a good grade. Go to help hours for the weekly quizzes.
By far one of the best professors I've had. The concepts are tough, but Butler teaches them well. He truly has your best interests at heart and is more than willing to help you, if you ask. Lectures are enjoyable, and available online. His exams are difficult, but if you study and practice you'll do well. Definitely go to his exam reviews!
Excellent professor
Truly one of the greatest professors at Iowa State. Is great at explaining complex calculus topics and has videos you can watch if you decide not to attend the lectures. Very funny and seems like he actually enjoys teaching.
Gave really good online lectures to explain everything.
Great teacher
Butler is the GOAT of course. Be prepared for this class, he will make you work for the grade but it is passable.
I had another instructor for this class, but Butler's online videos were the only reason I passed. Cares greatly for students and makes learning fun with his excitement and his cringe jokes. The class is difficult but he is always willing to help students who reach out, and anyone should be able to pass if they take full advantage of all resources.
An amazing professor that genuinely seems to enjoy what he's doing. Lectures can be lengthy but are extremely helpful. He is engaging, does lots of practice problems, and sometimes dresses up in videos! Grading and quiz/test schedules are all straightforward. The class isn't easy, but put the work in and you'll pass. (he's also active on reddit!)
Steve has quite a reputation at Iowa State. His videos are very helpful and can help simplify complex topics. Other than his great teaching skills, he also has an amazing personality. Definitely a professor that you want to have!
He is the best. Theres not much else to say. Butler does an amazing job explaining things and he makes Calculus easy to understand, always explaining why and how things work and not just the formulas.
Dr. Butler is an absolutely amazing professor. He makes any level of calculus easy to understand and follow through his videos. His transition to online courses was very good for students to adjust to as well. His videos are so in depth and helpful for homework and exams. If you can ever take a class with him, absolutely do.
Wow. one of the best math classes that I've taken in a while. His lectures are AMAZING I would recommend anyone who is struggling with math to look at them.
This teacher is very over hyped and so is the whole math department. Lectures don't teach you anything he just does examples. If you want to pass this class you might as well not show up to lectures and learn on your own
Butler is a great professor who wants the best for you. His lectures are pretty straightforward and easy to understand. When I took the class, there was always one question on the weekly quiz that he had taught us how to solve beforehand. Just be sure to know your basic concepts like trigonometry and differentiation/integration.
He made me genuinely enjoy Calculus! His lectures are not only fun and engaging, but easy to understand.
Lectures are very helpful with both clear explanations of topics and worked-through examples. Professor Butler loves math almost as much as he cares for his students and always brings energy and enthusiasm to lectures. Posts lecture videos and notes online for easy access and review. One of the only lectures I honestly look forward to each week.
Steve Butler's lectures were my favorite math lectures to go to. He can explain hard concepts in simple terms, certainly far better than any textbook I've read. The homework can be quite challenging at times, but all of the tests and quizzes felt reasonable and fair. Great class, would recommend.
Great professor, actually make math not terrible.
Steve is an awesome professor but Diff Eq was not an easy class in my opinion.
Steve is one of the most well-known professors at Iowa State. He's super funny and genuinely loves math. His lectures are leisurely, and he has mastered the ability to teach students. The classes he teaches are very difficult, yet he manages to help most students succeed.
Steve Butler is the best professor I've had. Makes lectures interesting, thoroughly explains every problem, and perfectly prepares students for his exams. Encourages students to make use of outside-of-class resources (which he offers plenty of), and also gives students general college/life advice since many of his students are younger. Amazing prof
Awesome teacher! He's what made calc 1 and 2 good!
An extremely engaging professor who manages to use humor to teach effectively, and clearly cares about his students and his teaching.
Steve Butler is literally the goat
He makes math funny, which makes Differential Equations a lot more bearable to learn.
He has lots of videos on youtube and his website but you either understand his way or you don't. And for those students who don't understand his way it reflects in his grading.
This man is the holy grace of the Iowa State University math department and is probably one of the top 10 math professors in the nation in my opinion. People come to his diff equ lectures who aren't even in diff equ just to hear his jokes. Awesome man.
Steve Butler is the best math professor I have ever had.
Professor Butler is the backbone of the Calculus department at ISU. His online lectures and practice make it possible to learn the material through the math track, and he provides ample resources on top of that. Using SI and Help Hours according to your personal understanding adds a lot to the class as well.
Best professor ever
Everybody raves about Butler... but there's a reason for it. He is by far the best professor at Iowa State University.
Before I start let's establish one thing, This man is the GOAT. He makes math better by adding jokes and always having a positive mindset. Literally, I had a different math teacher and all I did is watch his videos. Now, this does not mean calc 2 is an easy A. You are way off if you think that.
This man has helped me get through the toughest of math problems, and he has helped me improve on how to solve calc 3 problems with step-by-step instructions. Honestly, I love this man. Thank you, Butler.
GOATED lecturer, but you do not want to take a test that he wrote.
Steve Butler is phenomenal, thats all that really needs to be said.
I would not have passed Calc 2 if it was not for Prof Butler
LeButler
This man is the GOAT of Iowa State. Only reason I passed my classes was his videos.
I skipped my actual Diff Eq lecture every day and watched the Butler videos instead. Butler explains concepts very simply and keeps his lectures engaging and fun. Because he's the course coordinator for a lot of the math classes, he structures the lecture videos to teach all the content you need for the exams and homework with no fluff. ISU legend!
The GOAT. I've watched his videos from calc 1 to diff eq, and I could not have done it without them. His lecture videos are much more effective if you follow them up with the practice problem videos, but either way best math teacher I've ever had.
Steve Butler is a literal God. I had him for MATH 267 but I used his lectures for Calc 3 and they saved my life. He is one of the best professors I have ever had and I would recommend him to anyone. He is amazing and a math genius!
Butler is the goat
Steve is very passionate about math and spreading knowledge of calculus, and that passion allows him to be an amazing professor.
Savior of all Calculus Students.
Professor Butler's lectures on YouTube and his website are super helpful, but his grading can be tough. Using unstuck study, ChatGPT, and attending study sessions helped me stay on top of the material. Overall, an engaging class with lots of resources.
Amazing guy!
hes great, the class is hard itself
Great YouTube videos
Butler is the man. Stopped going to his lectures halfway through but watched his youtube videos and they helped tremendously. Would still suggest going in person to get a better understanding and a more quality learning experience.
He is an amazing professor and truly cares about his students. Not only does he have hours worth of videos worth watching but his lectures are great and he keeps them entertaining. I found the printouts he gives each lecture to be very helpful. The class its self is definitely hard but he does help make it easier for us.
Math 2650 will be hard no matter which lecturer you take it with but Butler is an amazing professor who delivers the Calc III content extremely well!
Steve Butler is an amazing professor! His Calc 1 class was very well taught. He keeps his office hours accessible and every lecture is recorded and posted online within the same day. Steve provides resources to help studying and makes every single lecture engaging and fun. Would definitely recommend if you can take his course!
Easily one of the best professors I have ever had. He was very easy to understand. There's nothing else to say other than I was blessed to have him conduct my calc three lectures.
Professor Butler is the best math teacher I've ever had. He's very funny and practically the Bob Ross of Calc. He teaches in a way designed for both audio and visual learners, as he has paper handouts for every lecture and solid videos for outside learning. I rearranged my schedule for next semester so I could have him as my math professor again.
Nothing I can say hasn't already been said. Hilarious guy, constantly motivating students, and the endless amount of online resources to help in a pinch. If you go into a Calc exam feeling unprepared, you didn't try hard enough, because of the giant excess of material that is available to you.
The actual goat of all Calculus
By far the best calculus professor at ISU. Knows how to lighten the mood of his lectures while also explaining everything very well. Does lots of in-class examples to get you used to problems you will see on quizzes and tests. Also posts all of his lectures on YouTube @Beard Meets Calculus, which is great for review.
Butler's videos are getting me through Calc 4. He is calm and thorough and his examples are easy to follow.
Steve Butler is the reason I am doing good in calc. He has this amazing way of teaching and making you learn. One of the best professors in the country. He is Steve.
Good Teacher
Fantastic professor, gives thorough explanations with good visualizations. Also all around a great guy, stands outside the library with a good-luck sign before exams. Inspirational and super caring guy. Generally focuses on practical understanding/practice in class.
goat math professor. simply the best. every lecture you learn something new, not just math.
Don't even have to explain its Steve Butler
Butler is a God here. Phenomenal man that loves his students more than any professor I've ever met. Even if you cannot get him for your lecture, you can watch his YouTube videos and do just as well.
Professor Butler was outstanding, very obvious that he cares for Iowa State students. Modest and smart.
The professor clearly states his ideas as well as the required knowledge for the course. He is concise and stays on topic whole being aware of other methods.
Best Math professor ever. 10/10 He puts in so much effort and I love the you-tube videos he uploads each week.
WHAT A PROF! amazing lectures, also he solves so many questions for you to make sure you MASTER the content. a rare gem. huge respect
the goat, wants the best for his students, lots of effort to help his students
Took Math 1500, truly one of the best overall professors on campus. Great at explaining things and is extremely supporting of his students, the only things to critique him on is he loves class participation and will pause looking at the class for 10-20 seconds waiting for someone to say something, other that that 10/10 professor.
