Best prof I had this semester!!

Web notes are very helpful
All around great prof. and person. Makes the course easier and more interesting.
Excellent
Pretty good proff, definatly makes the course interesting, if not with the material then with his personality!
i like the web course notes, and the labs are interesting.
Good course, good final exam
I loved his vests. They rules. He was a good teacher too.
Knows his stuff, and can teach it. The advanced courses are good too.
this guy cannot teach if his life depended on it,montone..doesn't seem to care how his students really do.test was brutal, out to trick his students.Any idiot can read words off a web page, that's all he does.nothing good about him.seriously.

good course, good notes, good lectures
I like the notes on the internet, makes it easier to learn. Lectures are well organized. Class is too big.
This is probably the one prof that has ever inspired me to show up to class. He has a gift for explaining the material in ways the text cannot. His exams are very fair, and marked in the same manner. The labs are wretched, but there's only 5 of them.
Dr Carr was really helpful studying for the final. the help sessions were good too
how can anyone think that this man can teach? Sure, he's nice and all, but all he does is read notes from the web and not explain anything at all..final was brutal as well as the quizzes. I would not recommend genetics to anyone!!
I really enjoyed this course. Dr Carr makes you think. I definitely want to do more molecular biology now.
this was a great class. i really learned a lot, i hope i can take more in this area. the web page add a lot, some of the links are really cool. definitely recomend it to other people.
i am moreinterested in genetics now. definitelhy recommended.

Great guy, really interesting, and knows his stuff inside out. Exams were pretty hard, and a little weird. If you want to learn, take his course.
The worst course I HAD to take at MUN. Prof very unclear, and made asking questions very uncomforable.
helpful and easy to pay attention to. i'd reccomend taking a class with him if you get the chance
Dr. Carr is an awesome lecturer! His own personal experiences make the material much more interesting. Be sure to do the mini homework assignments - they will likely show up on the exams. The only bad thing I will say is that he seemed annoyed with some of my questions, so he might not be that approachable if you have a problem.
doesn't answer questions, doesn't follow the book, he has his own notes which he collected from like 100 diff. genetic books, and his exams are on his web notes which are soo unclear. I was so interested in this course, but now NOT anymore. This guy officialy sucks.MY WORST COURSE os far. HIS exams are soooo wierd too.
He's an evil man, with evil exams, never answers u clearly. This is the first bio course i ever had a B in. all the others i had A's easily. The final was brudal, there were problem m.c questions that had 16 choices and worth 5 marks ea. SO SAY BYE TO partial marks on the final. u either get it right or wrong! Brudal, i failed the final!
Dr. Carr is a cool guy. His notes are sort of disorganized, but he makes up for them in lectures with great stories and analogies to ensure student comprehension. He gave out poems with our midterms to "ease the tension." The class is hard, but worth the effort. Also, labs are a breeze (and worth a lot) so it's practically free points
Good course. Good notes, exams were really fair. Pa attention to questions in notes, they will show up on exams. He shows how genetics stuff is related to real life.
Dr. Carr is that he needs to understand that this is the first genetics course students take in the Biology Program. For example, one question on the final he said took him a half hour to figure out, which is completely unfair. I had an A in the course, but only because the labs brought me up so much. His exams are unfair, and he is very unclear.
good course n notes. Dr Carr know the material and communicates it well. I agree, make sure you do the homework. Labs terrific, val rocks!
i found the class really interesting, really relevant. labs are good, online notes helpful. big class is a drawback, but what can you do. yeah, do the homework
Whatt!i see alot of good comments about this dude! i'm shocked. He's as brutal as it can get.i really hated that class. Genetics was my world before that class.now not anymore! His use of the text book is very very minimum.u have to study his online notes which are all over the place.the final was HORRIBLE.I failed it , although I went in with A !!!
one of the worst proffs i've ever had. He pulls notes from his ass that are not in the book. i know he's tryin to make us learn more. but the stuff he gives are alot more advanced for this course. Thank God for the easy labs and for Valerie. she made that course semi interesting.I agree final was messed up!

golly, you failed the test, guess you didn't learn the stuff. the notes are all in one place, lectures are dead clear. Carr makes you work, thats what we came to mun for.
I loved the course, the content is fascinating, and I liked Dr.Carr's teaching style. The stories he tells make the material more meaningful. Lots of work, but I being a freak that I am I hate easy courses. Definitely look at his notes and do the homework. I did and I did just fine.
I was looking forward to the Genetics course until I went to the first class. I couldn't stand Dr. Carr from day one. His lectures and notes are very detailed, but the manner in which they were presented was difficult to relate to. Also, his tests leave little room for partial marks -- 1 multiple choice question with 3 answers in it is ridiculous!
I agree. With his exams u have no chance in getting any partial marks, especially the final!that was the only test i ever failed in my life.there was the normal m.c with 4 choices,a mapping question, and there was problem m.c with 5-8 choices worth 5-10% ea!so u either get it right or wrong!they dead hard. Not recommended. hated the proff.arrogant!
HE SUCKS!
Dr. Carr is a decent prof, but very dry. He's very into what he teaches, which sometimes is a bad thing because he expects alot from the students. Notes are ridiculously hard to follow and study from.. and the exams are way harder than what we do in class. Marks are very hard to get in the exam, when the material isn't that hard.
Really guys? I didn't think the course was THAT difficult if you worked real hard. I liked the prof and the material, nothing out of ordinary. I got a B with I'd say B+ effort I put into it. I love science, maybe you need some special aptitude for this stuff? Dunno.

He expects alot form his students. what annoyed me the most is that he'll never answer the homework questions even if u put effort into trying to figure it out initally.& His notes are very hard to flow with links all over the place.text use is minimal,i wish he would have stuck more with the text.then we can go read it if we dont get the notes.
really killed my interest in genetics. not recomended at all unless you absolutly have to take the course.
To me it was an interesting course and I liked the prof. Would like to do more genetics after this I think, although I did work my you-know-what off.
good lectures, notes really clear.
i agree, good notes, good labs, really clear presentation
Terrible prof, notes are disorganized and he doesn't bother with the text book. Seems like many of the questions on the tests were not material covered throughout semester. He makes simple concepts seem impossible.
Really good notes and very clear about what he expects from his students. Very tough course however...a huge amount of study is needed to get an A.
I found it easy to go off topic when studying from his notes. You'd start off at on point and then you'd keep clicking links, going from page to page until forgot what you were doing. Still, really interesting stuff but the tests killed me, he'd grab topics he might have mentioned once and make it worth 20%. If you can get old tests, GET THEM.
I am shocked to see good comments about this prof! He has a very bad teaching style and his notes are a web of pages online. GET THE OLD TESTS! The labs will keep you sane and will keep you afloat for marks! Val is one of the best in the lab and makes the course intresting! She should be teaching the course!
Great course, notes are well organized, expectations clear. I learned at lot.
It looks like I am just getting a B in the course, but man, the lectures are awesome. The prof makes the material clear at the time, but learning it can brutal at times. Luv the course though.
He is pretty funny, and entertains you in class. His tests are pretty difficult, but his notes are fairly clear. Overall I'd say he's a good prof!
really great prof if your interested in genetics. Do the homework problems, they show up on tests. material is current, delivery interesting, subject is relevant.
Although I liked the notes, his teaching was pretty bad and I found the midterms insane if you didn't have an old one. He wasn't really clear on the course requirements either.
On-line course outlines very clear, good supplement to text. Exams are fair, but be sure to do the homework. Carr makes the subject really interesting.
The notes are organized but often have a lot of jargon that can be confusing. The tests are difficult and have no constructive feedback once they are returned. The labs are easy, fun and will keep your marks up. His tests are based on "logic" - I'd advise to get a hold of older tests if possible.
The man can't ask a straight forward question to save his life. Really hard midterms, get old ones if you can
Final and midterms are extremely difficult. Do not except an A, regardless of how much you study. DO THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS. A reason why I will probably not be doing a biology degree
The man obviously has a passion for Genetics, though I don't think I can say the same for teaching. Was very hard to get a hold of outside of class this semester due to his wife having twins recently. Exams were challenging with very little room for error (pretty tough marker + uses a lot of multiple choice). Study lots and ATTEND REVIEW CLASSES.
Hard course but worth the effort. Carr was very helpful when I went to his office. Be sure to do the homework problems in the notes. Notes are well organized, easy to work from, better than the book.
Notes are difficult to follow, there are links everywhere. Didn't follow the textbook AT ALL. Tests and final were VERY difficult - it seems that studying doesn't make you any more prepared for the tests. Class average was very low the entire semester. He was difficult to reach and wouldn't answer questions regarding exams. Don't expect an A!!
He'll teach you molecular genetics but won't test you on it - he'll test you on stuff you dis in the lab ONCE. Don't go to his tutorials expecting to get questions answered; I once asked him to explain at one something and he said "no." I failed texts, even though I'm an honours student. Labs will save you. He redeeming quaity is his love for cats.
Interesting material, well presented. He took a lot of time to explain things when i talked to him one on one. The webpage was more useful than the text - do the homework.
He's a very educated man but a horrible teacher. He thinks he's clever by leaving things open ended. Posts homework questions but will not give answers. His notes leave the textbook as useles a reference. He doesn't seem to want to teach the material, instead students have to figure it out on their own. Even top students often did horrible.
Great course. Good intro to molecular biology and genetics. thought the exam was fair, most of the questions were in the homework assignments. relates genetics to other parts of biology.
Very helpful one on one. he finaly posted answers to homework and exams.
Doesn't use the book, waste of money (I bought it new). Doesn't care how students do in the course, impossible to find to talk to about the course. Notes are confusing, & ambiguous at times and he tests on about 5% of the notes. exams are not predictable. Also, showed up LATE to the final, but didn't give any extra time at the end. not impressed.
I did bad on first two midterms, then did the nomework problems and brought my grade up 20 pct on the final. He helped a lot when I went to talk to him - worked through HW . Defintiely one of the most involved teachers in biology.
I had a really horrible time with car. His notes were really confusing and he does not explain things clearly . I also felt very unprepared for the tests, as they did not really reflect what the notes contained. I saw a lot of material for the first time on tests. He obviously knows his stuff, but he is a lousy, unengaging teacher.
Carr is awful. Avoid his classes at all costs. His tests are NOT a reflection of class material, and he doesn't even bother to proofread them. On our 2 midterms he interrupted 4 or 5 times to point out mistakes and typos, he even changed one answer back and forth. He is confusing, uninterested and lazy. It's not fair to the interested students.
interesting. Carr ran extra help seesions before midterms and final. Really helpful when I went to his office. Most questions straight from homework, final used same questions as midterms. DO THE HOMEWORK youll be fine.
Now I look back, I learned a lot. Like others say, do the homework. Very helpful one on one, if you don't get where you bad mistakes, talk to him. Know his stuff, communicates is well. Different way of teaching, but it works.
did bad on first exam, went for help and got it. Like everyone says, do the homework and you'll be OK. He talks from the onlin notes, links give you more background. definitly one of the better profs in biology
very helpgul one on one. do the homework. lectures are straight from the notes, carr doesn't use the book directly.
good notes, good labs, lectures clear, exams pretty much straight from homework assignments.
Very confusing lectures and website. The only thing that honestly helped me do better was the tutorials held during the lab slot every other week.
Dr. Carr uses too many techinal terms, and lectures are dry as he just talks for the whole hour & 15 mins. Hard to follow this class, and he don't do any test prep in class. Only for the tutorials, I would've failed.
His lectures aren't overly boring if you have any interest in genetics at all. His website is confusing at first but contains all of the information required to understand the course content.
well organized course now that carr has added tutorials, they really helped. as everyone says, do the homework. a good mix of classical and molecular genetics.
Had to work very hard to attain wanted marks! Not an easy A. Tutorials and labs will save you but midterms and final were difficult and focused more on problem solving than lecture material. Did not like the set up of his notes but overall an interesting course!!
He's clearly very interested and well-versed in genetics, but has the tendency to talk over your head. His notes are on a website and are a nightmare to figure out at home, so you should probably go to class. Tutorials are a gift from the gods - his exams are heavily problem-solving oriented, so tutorials will save your life.
The guy acts like you've been in genetics for years and talks way over your head. Would not reply to any of my emails for help and loves to let you know how smart he is.
Really good one on one. Tutorials really helpful. Do the homework & come to lecture, you'll be fine
He's notes are very confusing. It looks like it was created in a beginners computer programming class. You have to look all over the website for links. It is very easy to miss important details that he puts on tests. As the course goes on you will get used to them. He is very good at explaining the materials in class so I would go to class!
Worst prof I've had so far at MUN. His online notes were nightmarish to figure out and didn't prepare you for the mid-termsexams. His classes were long and his lack of enthusiasm made classes more boring than they should have been. Labs were average although the tutorials were a life-saver. Didn't enjoy the class.
weird comments. the notes are crystal and include lots of exam questions. the tutorials work you through them, Linda is great. wish other classes had them
Worst notes I have ever seen.
He's definitely a little odd... His voice is very monotone and his notes are SO messy. The final is in less than a month and I still don't know how to study. :(
I stopped attending class when he said "I'm not going to try to teach this because it's too complex, so learn it on your own". Horrible notes, monotone voice and a pompous attitude made the lectures difficult to sit through anyways. The material isn't very difficult; go to the tutorials and ask the TAs for help if you need it.
Easy A. Does lecture capture so you can watch from home. Clear and concise lectures; notes are well organized. Voice is very inflected so it keeps you interested. jokes are funny. website wow. #GOAT
Normally I wouldn't mind a boring prof if they at least had good notes, but this guy is lacking in every department. The online notes are HORRIBLE and he doesn't even use d2l. Honestly hoping he retires before my fourth year so I don't have to take him for advanced genetics.
Very boring, terrible notes, terrible lectures, just avoid him if at all possible..
Very boring, test material has nothing to do with online notes or lectures. If I didn't have a tutor I would have never passed. Has no interest in helping students do better. Would not recommend to anyone.
Dr. Carr is extremely monotonous during his lectures, which doesn't help in an already challenging course. His notes are disorganized, lack structure and are difficult to understand. He also doesn't use D2L, which is a real pain. Finally, he gives no feedback on the tests, so unless you need this course to graduate, I don't recommend taking it.
HORRIBLE prof. All over the place in lecture, his website was a complete mess, took away tutorials and added the percentage onto our midterm. Midterms were not based on notes at all and we had to teach all the material to ourselves. Went to Cuba mid semester and didn't teach anything we missed. The worst, most disorganized course I've ever taken.
Steve enjoys asking his questions in riddles and has the answers mixed up himself. His midterms are worth 20% each (25% this semester for one) so you really need to do well on everything. Steve is the most unhelpful human ever. To answer questions he used more questions and once when I visited his office he told me he didn't have time for me.-70/10
Awful online resources. Does not respond to e-mails and is never in his office. Exam questions are a complete surprise and are nothing like what is taught in class.
The semester I did it (Fall 2016) there was no TA for teaching the Tutorials so he removed them. The labs were alright but the tests were tough. He didnt use D2L, but his own website thats nothing but a wall of text. Claimed to use "Socratic Method". Second test had very low class average. I somehow got over 70 overall despite slacking on the final
Worst prof I've ever had. Uses his own website instead of d2l, website is extremely hard to navigate and find the information you need. Made lectures mandatory and were extremely boring, consistently went overtime on lectures (usually 15 minutes over). Test questions given had many errors, wording not clear on how to answer them Avoid at ALL costs.
Dr. Carr is a difficult person to have as a professor. Changed the syllabus halfway through the semester, assigned work that he would say wasn't actually due after we had all struggled through it and went over time in almost every class (including labs). Ends up curving everything in the end but I still don't know if it was worth all the stress.
