Criteria for speeches are rediculous, mostly the number of required sources and deductions for time. With the number of sources required it is almost impossible to give a speech and use your note cards sparingly, so then you get points deducted.
if your shy or are even slightly concerned about having to get up in front of the class do not take this professor. he makes you feel super uncomfortable.
Tough requirements on speechs - documentation of sources, etc.. Docs lots of points during speeches. Every 15 seconds you go under or over your time you lose a letter grade. Rough.
the guy is a prick who refuses to give an A don't recommend him
took this class for an easy 2 credits, not as easy as i thought it would be.. he made the class way harder than it had to be!
I love this guy and his wife Sue!!! You guys that made those negative comments, trust me you haven't taken Forensics which is awesome in and of itself!
One would think a professor that teaches a discussion class would have good communication skills. This is far from the truth! He talks about himself and his personal life way too much, and he comes across as a bit arrogant. I wish I never would have taken this class!
This class was terrible!! He graded very harsh. I think he could've made this class fun, but he made it one that i dreaded going too. He took points from the overall grade of the speech way to easy. I do NOT recommend this teacher for speech. MAJOR JERK. So as far as a grade I give this teacher an F
He is just a jerk, he is not willing to help you at all and needs to be slapped in the face! Speech is a class where kids need to be helped and encouraged, not put down all the time. If possible drop his class!
Horrible teacher, and is very intimadating. Just rip's apart your speeches and gives no positive coments. This guy is all about negativity and is terrible.
He is WORST TEACHER EVER! Do not take him! There is nothing you can do to get an A. He refuses to give out A's. He is a prick when it comes to everything he teaches. He is always in a negative mood. I had him my freshmen year and he gave me a bad impression of Stout. DONT TAKE HIM!
I AM WARNING EVERYONE NOW! Do not take this guy.. extremely harsh grader. Doesn't give anybody a chance, doesn't care if you try hard. Rude and the most anal retentive person I've ever met. Stay far far away.
Dont Take HIm
Good teacher, a littel bit strict on keeping up with the readings but overall he's a good teacher. He know's his stuff, but don't let that intimidate you. He's a very approachable guy and is very willing to help you out. Overall I would take him again any day.
Holy boring. Speaks to hear himself talk is right. It's hard to take any of this material from class to the real world, even for speech majors. At least the class is easy. Needs to make this class interesting so I don't have to go to RateMyProfessor.com during class to bash him just to stay awake.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! hard grader!!! if you ask him a question... he will tell you to reread the book... the book doesn't help at all!! and you have to read the book like 3 times for the final or other test... good luck with him...my advice...take his wife! SUE its su on the sheets not s.
horrible professor. i learned nothing...worked my butt off...and still got a bad grade!!!!!!!
take his wife not him! you ask him questions, he tells you to read the book and if you already did and still have questions...well good luck!

Very friendly guy, very helpful. He makes class fun.

So DONT TAKE HIM!!! I hear his wife is good tho. Careful they are both S COllie, that screwed me up big time! He is so boring, he tells stories about his drive way for like 20 min and there is no point to it. I didn't learn anything about giving a speech and the test are SUPER HARD!! i still passed, but it isn't a fun class especially at 8 AM...
very tough grader, not a fun class
He is not a helpfull prof and does not go over any assigned readings during class. All he does is talk about pet peeves that ppl do during speeches and his stupid DRIVEWAY!
bad teacher in general. dont take him!!!!
actually laughs at students in the middle of speeches. Total ass. Avoid him at all costs...my roomie said his wifes speech class was decent tho.
He is a horrible professor! You work extremely hard and don't get the reward that you deserve. He would not give out an A to save his life. He is very picky and points out all of the negatives and does not tell you any positives. Save yourself the trouble and don't take him. Otherwise your semester will be miserable. YOUR NOT TEACHING AT HARVARD BUDDY!
Total Jerk!!! SUPER hard grader, very very very picky, Ive never worked so hard in a class for nothing. Talks way too much, very boring, extreamly hard tests. Should i go on?? You get the point... DONT TAKE HIM!!!
NOT a good teacher take his wife instead

This dude sucks. I worked very hard in his class and gave some damn good speaches the best grade I got was a B-. this is supposed to be an intriductory class and he grades as if it was advanced. I followed the book exactly and still lost many points dont take this dude if you can help it
Follow the guidelines. He grades on the requirements. Enough said and easy to do.
The class is easy. Harsh grader, but if you do the work, you will pass easily. Never took longer than 1 day to write or research any of my speeches and I got an A. As long as you follow his guidelines and pass the tests, you will be fine. Good teacher as well, he made class interesting. I would take him again for any other speech class.
This guy is super Boring dont take him.
very high expectations on students, and tough exams. Better read the book! Lots of work for 2 credits, but, I learned alot, and he helped me to be a better organizer, more concise and critical when doing research. He does go on and on in lecture! All in all, good class!
Go to class; listen; read the book; you'll do well.
not a lot of outside of class work, but he grades hard. make sure to follow all guidlines for your speeches and study the examples in the book.
preaches
dumb class
He seems visually animated; however, he doesn't keep class interesting enough to stay awake. Plus, he repeats stories over and over again.
I would not recommend this teacher. He grades extremely hard. He has so many particlulars that you MUST FOLLOW. Try to get out of this class if you can. MUCH TOOOO HARD. He likes to talk to hear himself talk.
All this guy does is talk. He grades really hard. He talks every single day that you are not giving speeches. I would not take him.
Nobody in the class ever got a reasonable grade. Very very harsh grader. If I had an option, I would NEVER EVER take this class with this guy. VERY HIGH EXPECTATIONS from students. Go to class everyday, study the book, make sure you prepare well for the speeches, do your best in the speeches. Whatever you do, NEVER EXPECT A GOOD GRADE. DON'T TAKE!
He was a hard professor, yes, but I learned a lot in the class and it helped me to improve my public-speaking skills. It was a FUN class. And with a little bit of work, and by the way, that's what we're supposed to being doing in college, I recieved an A in the class
I think he has the next memorized... According to Lucas, Lucas says... Rather boring and tends to ramble rather than focussing and fundamentals. Since it is Fundamentals of Speech I suggest a new pair of glasses for this guy. The class requires a lot of work and hard to be motivated with his text like lectures and unwillingness to help.
i did not like him at all he annoyed me with how he always repeated himself three times before moving on.
Extremely tough teacher, don't take. Expects a lot from students especially on the outlines. Also, directions are very unclear.
I managed to get a "C" in the class, even though I got a "D" on all three of the speeches. He is a very tough grader. But he does throw you a bone when you need one, at least he did for me.
Definetly the toughest professor i have had so far. He is a professional speaker so he expects you to be professional. He's really a touch grader on the outlines but he doesn't do a very good job teaching you HOW to do it. I asked him for help once and I got a better grade but he's very harsh and unfair.
This class is extremely difficult. He is pretty much a point Nazi (similar to the soup Nazi) No points for you! If you want to learn and become a better speaker take this class, he will challenge you. He gives extra points at the end of the semester but read the book. Once you know what he wants its easy to please him. Great Guy Overall.
Everything he tells us not to do he does himself. He is a walking contradiction. In addition his outlines and teaching methods are random and incomprehensible.
He is a very tough teacher! He expects a lot out of you. He is a tough grader. He doesn't really show/tell you how to do the outlines for the speeches; he just expects you to know how to do them. I would have much rather taken this class online.
he basicly calls you dumb the first day you get there. f this guy.
very picky on the speeches and the outlines
Way too much work for 2 credits. TAKE SPEECH ONLINE!!!
rambles A LOT! very stingy with giving points. very hard to do what he wants you to do(i.e. give speeches correctly, write a proper outline, etc.)
Hated this class, I worked hard on every speech and got a C every time. He's lectures don't help you understand anything, He basically just talks about himself.
picky.
awful, egotistical teacher. ironically, he is a terrible speaker himself. always repeating the same stories and RAMBLING!!! have no idea how he is still emplyed in the university system.
This professor has no idea what he is doing. All he rambles about is politics and the vast majority of things he says does't relate to improving speech techniques. He is the worst tetacher I have ever had. He grades too strict and expects too much. How he is still employed is a mystery to me. DO NOT TAKE.
Mr. Collie loves to hear himself speak. It is very annoying but you must realize that this is his way of showing you how you should speak in front of an audience. His grading is very harsh! I consider myself a good speaker and received B+ on all speeches. He is not the best, I recommend trying to finding another teacher if possible.
He is not a positive professor. His grading is absolutely ridiculous and inconsistent. I would not recommend him at all.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM! He is a terrible speaker, he is rude, he has a huge ego, and he is very inconsistent with his grading. I just finished the class with him and I didn't learn ANYTHING! Such a bad experience with him. Just an awful teacher. Take classes with his wife, she actually knows what she's doing!!
Hes nice
This guy is a tough grader! I'd highly suggest taking a different prof..... he just talks the whole class and does not teach you anything
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! find a different professor. He is a hard grader come speech time. Very critical. Takes attendance and you earn points for attendance. All tests are done on your own time online. Refers to the text a lot. Provides some points for extra credit. Taking a speech class online, garantee you would earn a higher grade.
Mr. Collie is a VERY strict and inconsistent grader. I would not recommend him since the amount of reading is horrendous and he talks all hour about the book, putting everyone to sleep. Attendance is mandatory and you get points for it. Take online speech or find a new teacher.
Dont like him at all!!! Horrible teacher! He talkes the whole time and his voice is very annoying. Very unclear about assignments. I also spent most of mine time confused on what he wanted for the speeches. Plus he is a very very tough grader!!
Fun to listen to, can actually pay attention in class. Can be a little harsh on grading speeches, but not bad.
This teacher is seriously the most difficult teacher I've ever had! I graduated 7th in my high school class with a 3.95 gpa, & I still can't satisfy this guy! He rips your speeches apart for stupid reasons & you can't satisfy him, regardless of what you do! He has no sympathy for you if you're nervous! I would HIGHLY reccommend taking someone else
I would not recommend this teacher at all. He is the hardest grader ever and it is an awful class. All the other speech teachers are so much better them him.
This was the hardest teacher I have ever had. I graduated from high school with a 3.9 and he criticizes everything I do. I edited one assignment to what he specified in the previous and it was still wrong. Worst speech teacher I've ever had!
Hard grader on speeches and papers, unclear about a lot of the assignments, but an entertaining professor to say the least
Very difficult speech grader. Grades extremely difficult for the an introductory class with only 3 speeches. Can be a little rude sometimes.
Collie is a nice guy in general, but he was a harsh at grading our speeches. He can tear you down in his critiques. It is as if he expects us to know how to do a proper speech. Some speeches I thought went very well and they got like a B. I once put in 14 hours in a speech, turned out way better than my first one (C+) and I got a C on it.
Grades too harsh for a required class, but he's a classy guy.
He's quite interesting but he's mean at grading speeches. Not my ideal professor.
not a good speech teacher, mostly just rambles when lecturing. tough grader, doesn't explain what you're doing wrong. not recommended
I had Dr. Collie a few years ago and LOVED him. All you have to do is listen to him, take notes, show up, DO THE OUTLINE for your speeches, and you will do fine! I thought he was amazing and I'm so glad I challenged myself by taking his class. I was tempted to do speech online but learned so much!
He is a rediculously tough grader and picks apart every little bit of your speech. He rambles on and on for the hour and you never actually learn anything. I really wish I would've had a different professor.
Such a tough grader, ripped me appart on my first speech for saying "um" then he did the next day in his lecture. I was in competative speech and went to state and recieved a D on my first speech. don't take his class.
VERY TOUGH GRADER and most boring professor I have ever had. He goes on the whole class about what seems like stuff that is common sense. He once spent the entire class period explaining how to rate things on a scale of 1-5, something a 2nd grader could figure out. If you have him, GET A NEW TEACHER!
Very boring in class and grades very hard on speeches.
Ruthless grader on speeches. Makes you feel like crap in the feedback. Unless you're a professional speaker or a drama/theater lover, don't take Collie. Extremely hard-to-accomplish guidelines for speeches, and every 15 seconds below the 1 minute leeway results in 1/2 grade deduction. Not a bad guy, but you won't get a compliment without perfection
Not an enjoyable instructor. Monotone lecturer, heavy smoker voice. Rips apart every part of a speech he can. Organization FREAK. If its not organized his way you do very bad. If you have a choice, do not take Steve Collie.
Despite what many say, i find Dr. Collie's class to be easy. All you have to do is show up and follow his directions. If you do all the course work you receive 25 extra credit points at the end of the semseter. However, he may be the most boring teacher ever during lectures.
I feel like he doesn't even teach anything in class. I learn nothing about what I am suppose to do for preparing my speeches.
Boring lectures that don't really help in any way. Not even remotely encouraging with his feedback on speeches and grades harshly.
I took his class with no knowledge on public speaking, but I needed it for my major, and thought that it might actually help me in the long run. It hasn't. He was very dull, confusing, and big-headed. It was almost impossible for anyone to get a "A" on their speech in that class. Hard grader. No homework other than speeches really, so that was nice
He only talks during classes, no interaction with students. He grades speeches really hard, and unless you're about perfect you won't get an A or even high B. Does not teach much or gets you better at speaking, he just tells you how to do it, no practice unless you do on your own. I would not recommend him.
Despite what the rest of the ratings say the class is actually pretty easy. All you have to do is go to class and follow directions. His grading is outrageous, but if you get on his good side he'll go easier on you. But he is by far the most boring professor ever. Bring your laptop to class so you don't have to listen to his irrelevant lectures.
class is easy. speeches are very hard but you come out at the end knowing you are away better speaker then other classes. i would take him not much work at all. he talks a lot and you don't even have to take notes. i would take him. i know there are a lot more easy teachers but you learn more in his class
God awful, do not take this class if he is teaching.
Very hard grader. I gave wonderful speeches but I only got C's on them. So far no A's have been given to anyone.
One of the worst professors I've had at Stout so far. His grading is ridiculous. I would not recommend him if your not good at giving speeches. His lectures are boring and don't help you at all at writing your speeches. Avoid taking him at all costs.
Very tough grader when it comes to speeches. He does give feedback on each speech though for what you can improve on, which helps! His two quizes are online and pretty easy. Even though he is a tough grader, he also gives quite a few opportunities for extra credit. I did learn a lot in his class when it comes to public speaking. Overall not too bad
Lectures every day. Doesn't matter where you sit, you won't be able to read the content he provides. TOUGH grader. He is really hard to follow, and quite easy to tune out. If there is a different professor offered, take them.
His lectures are long, boring, and unimportant. None of it really helps with speaking. He's also really strict when it comes to grading. Don't expect an A.
If you want your GPA to stay good, don't take him as a teacher. He is a super tough grader, doesn't give back valuable feedback and didn't learn one thing in his class. I don't even know why he's still teaching.
The lectures are so long. Just to pay attention I had to tally all the times he says "mkay" or "alright" (202 is the highest). He gets off topic a lot and gives useless lectures.
Hes a very tough grader. All he does is talk and its hard to keep up. You can give a great speech and he will still give you a C. I recommend a different professor for speech that will help you.
He is a very tough grader and not a terribly nice guy. His requirements for speeches and speech outlines are very clear and seem to differ from each speech. He is also very grumpy and seems to dislike job and feels like he is better than the students. Not a pleasant experience in his class.
If you want to learn how to give great speeches take this class... but be warned, he is by far the harshest grader I've ever had. A great speech will never get you over a C. If you expect to get an A DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you want to learn to give good speeches you might consider it.
He's nice and will help you if you ask for it but the class is boring and he is a really tough grader on speeches. You have to try really hard to get higher than a c on a speech.
Collie is one of the hardest graders I've ever had. Although he does make it very clear how the assignments should look, he's very specific and leaves no room for creativity at all. He's very strict about attendance, especially on speech days and will count you absent if you don't sign the attendance sheet even if you gave your speech that day.
He goes off on rampages about the most random thing that we are suppose to connect to our speech but honestly you cant. I think he likes the sound of his voice tad too much. His lectures are horrible and basically a joke. yeah you'll learn how to make a speech outline but honestly take someone else.
Follow the outline examples while writing your speech. Practice the speeches and show up to class. He's a really approachable professor during office hours and is very willing to help, IF you ask. He does not coddle the students which is refreshing. The class was a challenge but really rewarding.
Fricken Steve. He was the worst teacher I have ever had. He tares you a new one on your speeches for no reason what so ever, He would go on long tangents about stuff that had no relation to speech so had no idea what our tests were even on. He was not a nice person. He claimed we were allowed 2 free absences, but I missed one day and lost points.
He is the true meaning of a skidmark on the underpants of society. He is a awful person and he absolutely loves hearing his own voice. His grading is complete BS! He said on day one or two that he doesn't give out A's and that is a true statement. Don't waste your time with this turd take someone else. UW-Stout needs to evaluate him and cut ties.
You will learn how to do an outline and that's it, he will tell you everything is the handouts but yet when I asked him where it was for clarification he said it wasn't in them and that was just the way he wanted. Don't waste your time and money on this guy. You will work hard for an A but you will not see one so you better be happy with a B.
This guy is awful he just talks and talks. All of the class periods are on creating outline documents but the majority of your grade is based on the presentation of your speech. He does not provide good examples or give clear expectations.
He is a very tough grader. His opinions are what goes. Be ware.
He grades speeches harshly. His opinion is the only thing that matters. He talks a lot. Few quizzes. Basically no homework besides speeches.
Okay, sorry Mr. collie, but please retire so you don't subject anymore students to this. I almost spontaneously combusted when I found out you gave me yet another C on my speech today. Also, his classed are useless, you should basically only have to show up on speech days. Don't take his class if you want a good grade, please learn from my mistake
Do not take this professor. He lectures too much and it is very boring. He grads way too hard as well.
very hard professor.
He gets off topic 99% of the time and is very confusing overall.
Super nice guy, but he's an awful professor. He rambled about random stuff a majority of the time. I literally used his class periods as a study hall and did other homework because almost nothing he said was relevant to the course. He has unrealistic expectations for speeches and grades pretty harshly. He's a nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend him.
Very Tough. Would NOT recommend.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is lecture heavy and the only thing that matters is his opinion. He grades speeches very harshly. I enjoyed speech class until I had him as a professor. Would never take him ever again.
I agree that he's a tough grader, but I managed to score a B on every speech with almost no practice, use his comments. Come to class everyday and try to enjoy his off-topic rants. Don't be afraid to ask him questions after class (unless you're in a hurry). The tests are online and come straight from the e-book so have another computer on hand.
He is a hard teacher but he tells you exactly what you need to get an A. He usually gets off-track during lecture but he goes through what you need for outlines, gives examples, and goes over online handouts on D2L. He gives great feedback and offers a few chances for extra credit. You have to work hard to get an A and he is willing to help.
He can be arrogant and intense, but he tries to keep it light with humor (generally doesn't work too well). Always says "Alright" under his breath after he says stuff, once you notice it destroys you. Has a very specific thing in mind when grading, and is incredibly particular about everything. Most of his class is going over handouts.
Professor Collie struggles with day to day classes. He talks about the most random things every class if attendance didn't matter you wouldn't need to go. Hard grader on speeches, gives everyone a C no matter what. Once you notice he says 'mmkay' or 'mmalright' after almost every sentence you can't get over it. I counted 90 'mmkays' in half an hour
The days when he lectures are boring, but the speeches are the bulk of the class and are easy enough to get B's on without practice.
Dr. Collie teaches exclusively by lecture. His lectures are heavy in stories and anecdotes. The class is geared toward someone with an interest in public speaking, versus someone who just wants to meet the credit requirement. If you like to learn from stories, you'll do well. If you don't want to invest as much time, I suggest a different professor
Lecture-exclusive. Ruthless grader. You won't always know how many points you lost in any given grading area (besides your outlines or missing the time limits). He is very passionate about his craft and doesn't care if you are not, he will grade you to his standards. Read the handouts and triple check that you have everything, or you won't survive
Really hard grader. his lectures don't tech you anything.
Steve was a good professor, but not exactly the best. He seems very knowledgeable in his subject, but when it comes to grading, it's usually pretty harsh grading. There's not much point in writing this anyway since he's going to retire after this semester. I wish the guy good luck to the rest of his ventures and a happy retirement.
