THE BEST THERE IS
Great prof! Keep up the excellent work.
Great Prof!
This guy is amazing
Awsome Cal 3 Prof.
good teacher.... always wanting to help you
Good professor but has a tendency to make things look complicated
AWESOME - you will learn what you need to know
I still find it hard to believe that he made Cal3 kind of easy to understand
Amazing. Very nice. Makes sure everyone understands.
Awesome! You'll understand thoroughly... everything!
Love the Lecture notes! So thorough!
Acts like forced to teach, reacts and threw little hissy fits ocasionaly
WOW simply the best prof ever. The people complaining should go back to HS
Hates teaching first years, doesn't care about students achievement in course
Too much 'hand-waving' for math
Excellent teacher! Fabulous at explaining things so that they make total sense.
Easy quizes and exams, probably because he explains everything so well.
Great prof. Explains everything very well. Best diff prof ever.

Very good prof, knows his stuff, doesn't complicate things at all.
Great prof. Has no tolerance for art students' stupidity, or first year students that are just plain dumb.
zzzzzzzzzzz

great prof, very clear and easy to follow
One cool cat!
Very good prof...made things easy to understand. Very good notes!
good times in cal1... Dr. Desjardins is a frank, intelligent and sometimes hilarious prof. (he is pretty funny when his microphone screws up and he curses it, before realizing that what he says is amplified across the whole auditorium!)
Awesome prof. Has amazing notes and is very clear. His exams are straight forward and his assignments reflect what you do in class.
Great prof! Explains the concepts well and adds in some humour here and there!
very good prof. the best.
Nice guy and very knowledgeable. Great to learn from. Could use a bit more animation but when u're a math prof... ya know...
Great prof. Made things easy and understandable

Excellent prof. Midterm was really straight forward. Assignemnts not brutal at all.
Get this professor if you can. Teaching perfection.
This guy is amazing. He'll cover everything on the lecture in order for students to finish the assignments or to do well on midterms.
Excellent teacher. If you can take his class, DO IT. Makes everything clear. Assignments and midterms are very fair. He makes the class enjoyable
Great prof, should I say awesome. Available for help almost all the time I needed him. Extremely fair tests, if you do the work you will ace the course. Nice guy to talk to. I emailed him a lot about stuff and he emailed within a day or two. This is a prof you want to have, :)!
He makes things very clear, but we do not cover very difficult things in this course. The midterms are also very easy.
Desjardin Simply ROCK, we love ya man
Best professor Ive had for a math so far. Always willing to help out. If you have this class just attend the lectures and listen to what he says. Great prof.
Steve! This guy is smart, and unintentionally hilarious. Also really down to earth, take his classes.

he is great !!
HE IS PERFFFFFFFFECT. IF I WERE GIRL, I WOULD MARRY HIM.
Good prof. Doesnt give you the marks, but teaches really well so that after you understand.. one of the best profs at U of O. he tends to kind of walk like some caveman or something. has very broad shoulders. should be a linebacker
if you look closely at his eyes, you will think he is a robot or something. but he is soooooo down 2 earth and cool, not like those other arrogant profs who cannot believe in their brains that they have a PhD !! (cough..Dr.D Johnson!!)
Steve! I had hm in Mat1320, 1323 and 2331 and 3 A+ in all .. really amazing prof: clear, easy, very knowledgebale and down to earth .. Desjardin's is simply da best!!
a very good professor. i recommend him totally
Really clear, thorough explanations, assignments and exams were a breeze. A fascinating guy and a hilarious personality!
He represents what every prof should be like. He is clear as to what his expectations are, good midterms and finals, VERY helpful. Just do the homework and you'll do great. Very organized teaching and EXCELLENT teaching style. Thumbs up!
When it comes to interacting with students and taking questions during lectures, he never missed a beat. Speaks clearly and concisely in keeping everyone's attention. I've taken many courses where students tune out the prof and distract others thereby creating a poor learning environment. Not so here. This guy's the best math prof I've ever had!
oooooh, steve i like your style...
couldn't ask for a better prof. organized, clear and concise. unique teaching style. lectures fly by with the whole class paying complete attention yet he manages to appear bored with the subject matter!?! it works!
Best science prof ever!!!!!!!!! Awesome notes, easy assignments that are relevant to exam questions, and always seem to be available to answer questions. Take your maths with him if you can!
Best prof ever
The best prof! Very very clear! He is very willing to answer questions! As long as you review his notes before exam, you can get A+! Highly recommend you to take his course!
probably the best math prof ever hired. amazingly clear lectures, paid attention to all of them without much effort. straightforward assignments, straightforward questions on midterms and finals similar to assignment questions (not the same, but you won't see anything you've never seen before). great sense of humour, often done lectures early!
Best prof I have ever had.
Helped me get into his class without having a prerequisite. Great guy
good and clear, must go to lectures for the notes, exam is basically from the notes
HOT AS IN !HOT!hES THE BEST PROF IN THE WORLD!.i JUST MESSED UP THE CLASS.
THE BEST PROF EVER..STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
GREATEST MATH PROF EVER!!! if you ever in a class with him then u r very lucky. go to all the lectures and ur guarantee a pass in calc II on ur first try.
BEST MATH PROF I EVER HAD!!!!!!! So good he will make Calc II look like a joke. Lectures are very very useful, and his notes are the best!
Awesome prof, had him for all cal related math classes. Hardly get bored n he teaches material in a amazingly clear manner. Great guy to see for help. MT n finals are super easy, just review from notes n past tests n u got ur A+
GREAT PROF a very fair course, course does require work on your part, but it's very sensical and there are no surprises...do the assignments YOURSELF and things will make sense, MT questions are fair but needed every minute, final fair but seemed long so DON'T rely on final to do good in course
What more needs to be said, everyone has said it. Desjardins is a GREAT prof. He expects you to know your stuff, but he TEACHES you how to know your stuff. Thumbs up!
tHIS GUY IS AWESOME REALLY NEED HIM FOR CALC TWO....
He is the best math professor you could ever have. Makes difficult concepts easy. Great during office hours. Makes me look forward to getting up in the morning to head to class. Assignments are harder than exams; exams are very fair. Just study and you'll be fine. Get him for as many math classes as you possibly can. It's worth it!
2 years and 3 A+ later, I am still looking for more classes from him. Easiest Prof ever. Other Math profs want to kill you this guy is gonna pass you even if you have half a brain. If you pay enough attention in class you get at least a B+. Really helpful outside the class. If you ever happen to take a small class with him, he will learn your name.
Best math teacher at Ottawa U.
Guys, if you have the chance to get this guy as a prof, fight for him tooth and nail! He's absolutely awesome!
I hate math, but if it has to be math it's better be with him.
I love steve!
Great teacher, goes through the theory and examples with great detail.
If a student doesnt understand steve, he is probably deaf and blind. This is the best teacher a student could ever get.
Best prof in math, haven't seen any better elsewhere. He has office hours whenever you need them, without appointments and is very approachable. He can explain flux and third order differential equations like its basic addition. If you can't get into his section, go to his lectures instead of your own. He also speaks English, which is too rare...
Amazing person. He is helpful, understanding and compassionate. I wish there were more professors like him at uOttawa. Steve if you are reading this.. we love you.
Excellent teacher! Gives good examples throughout the lectures. If you go to class and do the assignements (relatively easy) you will do very well!
Desjardins is an excellent professor. He covers each topic thoroughly, with many good examples in class. He's not the best at explaining things in class, but I have never gone to his office for explanation. He's totally approachable, kind and personable.
Steve, if you read these, you ar god. I have never had a prof who explained so clearly or definitely. If you're not in his section, switch!
Great notes, easy tests, awesome prof.
strongly recommended
Excellent teacher without a shadow of doubt! He makes everything in calculus look so easy than it really is. He speaks very clearly, loves teaching and if he's in the mood, will also make jokes! By far the best math teacher I have ever had. Exams and midterms & assignments fairly easy. Switch to his class and enjoy math(interesting words 2 some:) )
You rock Steve!
Awesome teacher that will help you to the best of his abilities. Very clear notes and easy tests if you study from them.
AMAZING PROF! Conveys the material perfectly, makes everything look as easy as it is. His exams are only tough if you don't study, fair marker.
Awesome prof! the god of calculus! Now if only the course material wasnt so bloody hard! I highly recommend going to his office hours! Great prof!!!! Oh an really good textbook! now 2 years later i still refer to it!
he says "OKAY" a lot,, its really funny,, i totaled up the OKAY's in one class, he said OKAY 150 times,,, good times :)
Great calculus 1 & 2 prof. Does a great job keeping you interested in the lectures, assignments almost directly reflect the tests. Would love to have him as my prof again, highly recommended!
Great Professor! Conveys subject matter flawlessly. Although assignments were a bit tricky at times, I still find to date he is the best professor I have had so far at the U of O.
Good teacher, easy class. He gives you everything you need to learn and practice. I recommend him.
He's extremely nice, great at teaching, and really makes first year an easier adjustment. I enjoyed having him, and it is nice to have a prof who feels more like a teacher, than a prof who acts like they are forced to teach. He's incredibly patient, and very helpful during his office hours.
MAT1320 AND MAT1322. Amazing professor. Conveys all the material effectively, assignments/midterms/finals are all fair. Study and you will get a very good mark. Made me love math :D
AMAZING!
Best math professor I have ever had in university. Everything is practically flawless and he's also a really nice professor. Also excellent in Calculus I and MAT2384 (ODE course)
Potentially the best teaching prof the university has. If you have to take Calculus I and/or II take it with him. He also teaches the ODE courses. He is there to teach, that is hwat he loves doing and it shows in his methods. His class is usually monday and wednesday morning which is unfortunate but he is worth it!!!!
Awesome prof. The best math prof you'll ever have.
amazing prof! super helpful, exams are extremely straight forward if you know the material (no surprises)
Amazing prof!
the best prof ever ...
He completely knows his stuff and is able to deliver it to his students in an efficient and very organized manner. RECOMMENDED! If you do the homework and understand it, you should do great on the midterms. The exam however.. was more challenging. Assignments are a mark booster because for most you can check if you have the right answer or not.
The best professor ever, very approachable, clear in class, does many examples... Perfect. Overall, an amazing person and teacher who is very down to earth unlike other profs.
Dr. Desjardins is an excellent teacher and overall a really nice guy. However, the final was much more difficult than anticipated. Also, students who are reading posts for MAT1320 please note there was a reform this year (2011) in the curriculum that was made to lower averages so beware of older posts. Still by in large great prof, great class.
You can't go wrong with this guy. His teaching is very clear, and he's always willing to explain concepts in more detail for students who need extra help. The course itself was ridiculously easy, but that's mostly because it's calculus I, and not because of the prof.
Excellent professor, one of the best in the department. I took 5 math courses with him ranging from first year to third year difficulty and loved all of them. Cannot recommend enough.
Greatest math professor I've had. Strongly recommend him. Straightforward assignments, midterm and final exam. Thought this class would be one of, if not the hardest math class I would take during my engineering degree. I was wrong. His teaching methods and the straightforward nature of his class made it one of the easiest.
Good prof.
He's a good prof , he teaches very well really laid back so you wont feel so rushed or lost or panicked in his class. one of the best math profs
Very easy-going, loves to teach; teaches clearly and concisely and always stops to ask students if they understand what's going on. Exams are slightly more challenging than assignments, but no surprises. Went to his office hours once; and ever since, he remembered who I was and personally gave me assignments back instead of leaving it in a pile.
One of the best math profs in University of Ottawa makes the hardest math course into the easiest, you must attend class and do the assignments your self and your guaranteed an A- to A+
Excellent professor, fairly charismatic. No surprises on midterms.
His explanations are amazingly straight forward. Make sure you do all the suggested problems from the text book - Calc III can be difficult to understand if you don't practice. His exams were very fair - no surprises.
Best prof I have had to date. Extremely clear and (secretly) quite funny.
Dr. Desjardins does not teach us, he "learns with us", and it makes him stand out as a prof. As far as the course material goes, he conveys the concepts very effectively and concisely. His expectations are clear, and the tests are very fair. I think I can appreciate the intrinsic beauty of mathematics more now. A+, Dr. Desjardins!
Great Prof. Lectures are well worth going to. I think I'm the only one who got his "now we have a but, but not a big but" joke.
Best prof I have had to date. Go to class, take notes and pay attention, and you will be rewarded. Doing the assignments is a great way to prepare for midterms/exams. In class examples reflect assignments which reflect the midterm/exam. Great prof
A Great Prof had him for all 3 calculus courses. Do the suggested excersices and the midterms and exams will be easy and you are guarenteed an A. Very helpful when you go and see him in his office hours. The course flows nicely and makes alot of sense
Clear, concise with teaching of material and expectations. I usually struggle with math, and I walked out with an A and I know the material. His flimsy paper textbook on differentials is a useful reference after finishing class as well. Best prof I've had to date.
Best math prof I've had at the university, and that's saying something considering how many great math profs I've had. He conveys the material effectively and his examples all relate to the assignments. Midterm has no surprises if you do the assignments.
Beyond a doubt, the best prof in the Math department at Uottawa. His exams are straight forward and his help outside of class is abundant. He cares about the students. He had the names of each of the students devout to memory by the third week.
OK inorder to get an A+++ you need to show up and listen. Use the assignments as practise to study. and Lastly find old midterms. and you should get an A. Its an easy class but in order for you to get an A you must study.
By far the best professor I had in first year. Just showing up to class and listening to the lectures made me well prepared for the tests and assignments without doing any extra work. This guy knows how to teach.
Mr Desjardins is a great teacher, and his assignments really reflect what will be on the midterms and the final. He is also always available at office hours and really cares about his students. Good luck to all taking him, you will not be dissapointed!
Had him in first year for Calc I. Now in my third year and I have yet to find a prof as good as Desjardins. One of the kindest and most helpful profs out there, in class and during his office hours. Midterms, assignments and exams were pretty fair too. Wish he could teach me all my math classes!
Best math prof I've ever had! Material is not "easy", but he gives really good help! Had him for Calc 1, 2 and Calc 3 for engineers, and used his office hours for all 3 classes. This man knows what he's talking about and clearly teaches it. No stupid examples or useless info.
ONE WORD! AMAZING
Great prof. explains very well. midterms and exams are fair and similar to previous ones. also assgs are very helpful, so do them.
Great Prof! Easy Material! Follow the examples and you'll be fine.
His teaching methods are extremely good. Everything he teaches sticks to you because you understand it. Midterm and exams are based on the assignments
His online course is amazing
His online course was ok, but he did not give enough exercise to my liking, and I often got lost in his (multiple) examples. But overall, I liked him.
An excellent professor. An easy A course. Just show up to class and do his assignments and you'll be all good. The best professor in the faculty. Try to have him whenever possible.
By far the best Math teacher at uOttawa! He explains the material crystal clear and makes it so easy to understand. The midtermsfinals are always very similar to the practice ones he posts. He is also the best chalkboard eraser out of all the profs on campus. He does such a thorough job, he never misses a single spec.
For this class, all I can stress is that if you are having difficulty, seek help at the math help center or go to his office hours. Very helpful tip is to actually do the recommended questions. Do all the assignments yourself(Don't use Wolfram Alpha) as most of the questions on the midterm and final come directly from those questions. Good prof.
If the sun and the rainbow had a baby, it would be Desjardins.
What can you say? Possibly one of the best profs on campus. I fought to get into his class, and it was well worth it.
Desjardins is the man! I think the other rating summarize why!
Calculus at first is a joke, very easy. Gets tricky when it goes to integration optimization. This prof had a very hard final, his finals are not easy. Honestly he's overrated. He's just like any other calc proff there is out there. You don't really need to go to class, just do examples from the textbook and you're good.
One of the most concise teachers on campus. The tests are jokes in comparison to the homeworkassignments. Do the assignmentssome homework and you'll do well.
He is the best Calculus Professor I have had. He explains things clearly and ensures everybody understands. After lectures he is more than willing to help you. For the final, try to look for his past exams as it apparently was similar to it. Overall an amazing prof, should be your first choice. Since I didn't do the past exam I didn't do as well.
Very awesome teacher. Explains too much unneeded theory but in return explains very good examples that are relevant to finalmidterm material. All exams are extremely fair. Gives many good online material. Good amount of past exams found online. An easy A for students looking to improve their GPAs.
Really good teacher, makes the class seem like the easiest class in the world.
1010 Prof made class very easy
Awesome prof, very clear, posts all notes, solutions, prate etc online for you incase you miss, doesn't follow the textbook for examples so if you don't understand him you can look at the textbook. Tests are like the tutorials and very reasonable. One of the best profs I have had at Carleton. Very approachable and always nice and helpful
Hands down the best mathematics professor at the university! His lectures are so clear you won't even need the textbook. If you attend class and do as many assigned problems as you can, you'll easily get an A+. Very accommodating and helpful prof outside of class too. Highly, highly recommend him!
I feel like people like this need recognition. He is an absolutely fantastic professor and even if you don't grasp calculus right away, he will help you get through it! He is very clear in his explanations, and his exams reflect exactly what was taught in class, no surprises! Easily one of the best professors at the university!!!
Lectures are very clear and easy to follow, with many examples of similar difficulty to the midterms and final exam. Incredibly helpful and patient, and has a good sense of humour as well. Simply the best calculus professor you can get.
Easily the best prof I've had. He tests you on exactly what he teaches you, and he teaches it well. The tests were basically as difficult as the assignments, if you can do those you can get a great grade. Just dont sit on the left side of his class, he never teaches the left side. Just the right and middle.
1010 best professor I've had at uOttawa. Explains every example concisely and clearly, has very proficient lectures and has very fair tests. Like other courses, doing homework basically gets you a high mark in the course - Steve's course reflects very much that. Do the required homework problems, understand the material and you'll have no problem.
GOD BLESS THIS MAN. Steven sets the example of what every professor should strive for: clear, fair and very understanding towards his students. This is a man that won't try to screw you over. Assignments and tests (1 midterm, 1 final) reflect what he taught. The theory helps you understand the concept, but he goes a little quick. Take ODE with him!
Took MATH1104 Carleton. He's a great prof. The way he explains stuff like listening to a story. Pretty smooth. Good personality, great confidence in teaching. Pay attention in class and you will get an easy A. His notes are more than enough; I didn't even buy the textbook for this course...
Is clear with what he expects from his students. Midterms and Final are similar to old ones so study those.
Do not take his calculus class online. You will ruin your life, trust me. If you have never seen calculus before, AVOID THIS COURSE. There are no lectures prepared by the prof, you must figure EVERYTHING out for yourself. (Which is not easy if you have no idea what calculus even is) There are no notes, homework or textbook. Figure it out yourself
11+x^2 arctanx and 1(1-x^2)^(12) arcsinx Just solved every "tough" question on the tests! Great prof! Do no be lazy about homework questions, the ones from the middle of the chapter are key to passing the course. Tests are exactly what was taught in class. Fair (even generous) grader! Highly recommended.
Had high expectations of him after having Calculus II with him the semester before. As expected, I was not disappointed. One of the best math professors you can get.
Took his online calculus course & it was horrible. You have to figure everything out by yourself, he offers no lectures or anything to help you. He rarely answers emails, & provided no info about final exam, & no practice exams or problems to do to prepare for it. I would say take the course in real life if possible. He seems like a nice enough guy
He explains concepts really well but he can be extremely boring so try not to fall asleep. Occasionally he'll skip sections in order to stay on schedule but asides from this, he's a great prof. DO NOT GET BEHIND IN YOUR HOMEWORK.
Such an overrated prof. He is not that good. His average was extremely low.
Steven Desjardins is in most people's opinion, the best Calc I prof. He knows the content through and through and wants you to succeed in his class. He's happy to answer any questions at his office hours, and does a great job at answering questions in class. I wish more profs were like him.
Prof. Desjardins is quite the fair prof! He explains his content well and very much understands the material he brings to class. Be aware that the midterms and the final can be tricky. Overall, would take again.
very good prof
Professor Desjardins is a really good choice for those taking MAT1320. He lectures pretty well (although he can be boring at times) and gives fair midterms. His 1st midterm was extremely easy. His 2nd midterm, not so much. Nonetheless, he is still a great prof. Do all the assignments, attend the DGDs and do all the textbook work and you'll get an A
pretty good prof. You must go to dgds which sucks. gives lots of hints about the exams
I had steve desjardins for calculus 2 as well as ODE. To be honest I found him average when it came to calculus 2 but for ODE I would highly recommend this prof. Just show up to the lectures for ODE because the examples he does in the class are very relevant to the midterms and the finals. Overall he does not change the pattern as well.
My favourite class and teacher. Really nice, unintentionally sassy but his TAs are tough graders. Come to class, it'll help a lot.
Great lecturer, examples are really clear and uses a chalk board which helps with note taking. Do the assignments and suggested exercises and attend the lectures and DGDs and you will get a good mark.
He's a great prof who explains the material in Calc I really well! He gives about 10 online assignments which are easy As and easy quizzes in the DGDs. There are two midterms which are easy if you study a lot beforehand. The final was much more difficult. Study really hard for the final and do the recommended homework!!
He is a tough marker. And makes the exam more difficult than it can be. Watch out for the second midterm first midterm is easy then the second midterm kills.
He was a good prof but not the best. His final exam was a killer. You need to attend class. He is very helpful during office hours.
Such a great prof!
He is a very good prof. Attend the class and do the previous years exams.
I had him for calc 1,2, and ODE. He teaches well, examples correspond to exams and midterms. Highly recommended.
He's a dull lecturer but he explains concepts crystal clear. All of his evaluations are fair so just do the textbook work and you'll be fine.
He is a good prof. and but the exam is really difficult
Easily the best calc prof
Honestly, he is by far the best prof i ever had for first year. If your looking for a prof where u can explain all the lectures and expect the midterms to reflect what was taught in the class,Steve is your guy I would for sure recommend him to anyone and take him again for 2nd year math courses
Had him for Calc 1 and Calc 2. Amazing professor. Sometimes his lectures can be boring, but if you sit in the front of the class it's really easy to pay attention to him. He always explains theory first and then does hard examples in class to prepare us. The examples are sometimes harder than textbook questions which is good.
Really clear prof, explains concepts thoroughly. Probably the best prof for 1322. Midterms and exam were very fair and short.
Very good prof! Easy tests!
Don't take the online courses. It is not easy to follow.
Best math prof!!!
Very good prof with really clear notes. I would take again any courses with him. Tests are very easy and straight forward.
Had him for calc 1 and 2 . great prof and happy to have won the battle into his differential equations class next year for sure take if you can
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!! WOULD TAKE ANY COURSES WITH HIM!!!!
Best prof! Explains material so clearly and his tests are straightforward. He points out numerous mistakes previous student make (so beware) and he teaches using plenty of examples that are good to study off of. Notes are clear and organized. Do a bit of homework and you'll be fine. Ironically funny. TOTALLY WORTH the early morning lectures.
Try not to take MAT1339 online! The prof seems very nice & approachable; however, if you've never seen calculus before in your life, you're most likely going to need a tutor. The instruction provided is all written out (which is difficult to follow), & there's occasional Khan Academy videos. Not a bad prof, just a difficult subject to do online.
excellent prof
Good prof. I had better math profs than him, but overall he is fine.
Amazingly easy and so nice!!! VERY CLEAR grading criteria! No extra material or surprises! Calc 2 is the hardest calc course so you'll definitely want him!
Amazing and easy as usual. Take it during the summer if you can- its shorter (he cuts out the harder material) and much easier!!!
I've only had good Calculus profs at uOttawa, and Prof. Desjardins was no exception. His lectures were very good, and covered everything that was on the exams and midterms. His supplemental homework was very helpful too.
Really good teacher, explained everything clearly. I like him.
Had this prof last year for MAT1320 and now MAT2384. Best prof you can get for this course. Tests are no harder than the assignments. It was a joy having him teach us
One of the best profs you will see in 1st 2nd years in Engineering.
Excellent prof!
Very good prof. I found the midterms very fair. If you attend the lectures and DGD's, you should have no problem with this course.
Okay prof although not very accessible outside of office hours. Cares for students but is also a tough grader.
Very good prof! Very clear
Amazing prof who had very good lectures. I don't recommend skipping them though as you will most likely miss something really important. I highly suggest taking him if you can.
He is an amazing prof!
Most amazing prof I had. He explains things very thoroughly, he does a lot of examples in class, and he always answers questions. The midterms and exam were very straight forward with no surprises. do the sample problems and you will do fine. If he is teaching a class you need, take his section!! best prof ever.
Perfect prof! Take any courses with him
Very good and clear prof. The course is not hard just do previous years tests.
Very clear good professor. Recommended!
Very easy and clear prof! highly recommended.
Steve is the man! An amazing prof! Make sure you attend all his lectures!
Steve is by far the best prof i ever had. He can explain all the lectures and the midterms reflect what was taught in the class. I would for sure recommend him to anyone and take him again for 2nd year math courses
#1 PROF. He knows all of his material and explains concepts very clearly. He always encourages all students to ask questions and will always give responses until the student is satisfied. His classes are enjoyable and he has good humor. He know what is expected of you. Exams reflect exactly with material. Writing is clear on board. U WORK HARD A
he is an excellent choice. very clear prof, and the exams reflects his note.
I enjoyed Desjardins straightforward style of teaching (his midterms were more or less the same). The dgds, although mandatory, are not necessary to achieving a good grade (at least for MAT1320). To do well in this class, 1) attend the lectures, as the midterms are lecture heavy 2) know your gr.12 math really well 3) practice lots of integrals
Very good prof! Gives clear notes and lots of examples. The tests are fair.
best prof ever! he makes everything so clear and gives a lot of examples in class
Amazing prof, makes everything easy to understand and goes through lots of examples like you'll actually see on midterms and the final. Really cares about his students, wants everyone to do well and wants everyone to participate in class. If you can take ANY class with him, do it!
I love this man!!! Explains things clearly and gets right to the point and shows plenty of examples. At the end of the semester, at the end of the last lecture, everyone applauded him. His tests are pretty easy if you listen in class and attend every lecture and DGD. Honestly wish he could teach all my calculus lectures for the rest of my time here
One of the greatest prof out there! Take him without a doubt!!!
Great prof, funny and cheeky as can be. Easy to learn the material with him, does lots of examples and takes things at a good pace.
His notes are amazing, midterms are fair, final exam was hard.
Wish he was teaching Calc 2 this semester
By far one of the best profs on campus. Tests were very easy to do well on, and assignments were there to help solidify the material. Shame he's not teaching any higher level math courses though... I would have definitely been one of the first ones to sign up.
Great guy! I had him for calculus 3 and he even helps me with ODE problems!
An excellent prof ! Lots of examples, easy to follow
Very easy going teacher
AMAZING PROF!!! TAKE THIS MAN
Man, is very understanding of the material, and also understands very well what the class understands, and is able to communicate information very effectively and efficiently. This is a professor that understands the material so well, that it seems like its trivial for him to teach the material, Thank you for teaching me!
Hands down the best professor I've had. Just finished my fourth course with him and am sad its over. Grades fairly, incredible lectures, straightfoward exams, and just fun to listen to.
Best professor I've had at UOttawa.
Steve Desjardins was a contract prof at Carleton for MATH1005 he was good at lecturing and his teaching style works. However, Prof Desjardins had been very unprofessional originally refusing to use a mic, swearing at students, and rolling his eyes at questions. He just had a terrible attitude all semester, avoid if possible.
Really interesting prof, easy tests. Never thought a history of math class could be fun, but he made it both fun and interesting.
After being at university for 13 years I have never met a meaner prof than this man. He gives hard midterms , and even worse finals. He made me cry 17 times in one semester.
Best prof I have ever had. I wish I was able to take all of my math classes with him. Has a lot of experience teaching and it it very clear in his lectures. The assignments perfectly prepare you for tests.
Go to school and listen the lecture, easily got A. Best teacher in Uottawa. The midterm and Final questions all from the class lecture.
By far the best prof I have ever had. He and does lots of examples in class and notes are amazing. Assignments are straightforward. Midterm was super easy as well as the final. If you have the option to take one of his courses do. He is the G.O.A.T. of math
One of the best math professors at uOttawa. Lectures and notes are very clear and reflect what to do for assignments, midterms and finals. Midterm and finals were very straightforward. Highly reccomend taking his class. Easily one of, if not the best professor for math at uOttawa!
This guy is a legend! Going to class isn't needed, especially if you're already good at calculus. His past papers and DGD problems are all you need to do well, and he genuinely wants everyone to pass. There are a lot of homework problems, but other than that, can't complain. Also, all midterm marks lower than the final mark get replaced.
Really good at explaining abstract ideas and concepts. Reasonable understanding guy. Very engaging teacher. However he is tough (but again reasonable) grader and you will have to work hard in his courses, but you will learn lots. Highly Recommend.
One of the best Prof. I ever had. He doesn't post his lecture notes, attending class is a good idea. Very knowledgable. His lectures are straight to point and very useful, all you need is his notes, you don't need the textbook. The Exam has no trick and straight forward. He makes good jokes too, very friendly and answers questions well.
He goes straight to the point, very easy to understand, open to answer doubts and questions, and is lenient based on your circumstances. He is compassionate and hard working. However, do that practice problems and do the assignments for sure. Or you won't end up with a good grade. The content is easy to understand, but tedious to study.
Can speak English? Check. Cool? Check. Clears up confusion by knowing what students struggle with and answering the questions before they are even asked? Check. Explains the material clearly? Check. GOAT status? Achieved.
Really nice guy I just find that his online teaching transition did not go well. Really rough notes and all over the place. Personally, I can't keep up with what is going on in the lectures but luckily his midterms are similar to practice problems.
He is a great prof, but you can tell he is better at teaching in a lecture hall with 9 chalkboards rather than online. But as long as you do past midterms you will be fine.
He was amazing, really wish I could've taken this class in person. He explains everything very well and takes the time to repeat if you ask. His tests had no tricks and were very similar to the Mobius assignments. Hands down my favourite prof of the semester. His backgrounds are also v cool. Pretty easy A if you attend all the lectures.
Amazing prof, good lectures, and all of the material given on midterms and final were accurate to questions assigned. Always had helpful notes available and posted. Fun and entertaining lectures, super chill, funny guy, and has a cute cat. Would definitely take one of his classes again
GREAT math professor. Gives you clear instructions on how to solve every type of problem. Questions on the midterm and exam are extremely straight forward; all you have to do is memorize the procedures given in class.
Professor Desjardins was a good professor. His only setback was that he taught exclusively from his notes which were not too organized and not entirely clear (ironic since he devotes a mark on test questions for clarity). Test and exam questions did not resemble previous years' and were harder but this was likely done to counter cheating online.
One of the best math profs I have ever had. Was very considerate especially taken into consideration COVID-19. Do the extra credit assignment! Trust me it will help you more than you think. Follow the tentative course schedule suggested problems and you are good to go. Tests are simple and quite easy, very similar to what we do in class.
Professor Desjardins is a great prof for the math department at uOttawa. His lectures are clear and easily understandable. His assignment and test are close to what we learn although sometimes the tests are a little bit difficult. I am also taking his MAT 1322 (Calc II) course and it is still great so far.
Had him for my first calculus class of university and he was amazing. his lectures were great, tests were straight forward and even though exam was a little difficult it was fair. if you have the chance to take him in any course i would highly reccommend doing so. I liked him so much im currently in his MAT1322 (calc2) and so far its amazing.
The guy is amazing, one of the best profs i had so far in university. Take him if you can. I regret not taking him for calc II, his teaching is straight forward, his practice problems reflect the midterms and exam (exam slighltly harder, but still easy if you study). The guy is just amazing at teaching. Even with COVID-19 , he still did amazing.
Overrated imo. Has pros and cons. Explains some concepts well and talks slow - sometimes too slow. I like the Mobius, it's great practice. Answers emails, office hours is helpful. Doesn't give many announcements on BRS, ugly notes, SUPER tough test grading. One missing sign or dx and you'll lose full marks for that question even if it's correct.
For MAT 1322, professor Desjardins also did great. Although this year the calculus has become harder than MAT 1320. He still did a great job, explained well on concepts. Choose him for your MAT 1320 and MAT 1322, you will get an easy A on it.
Professor Desjardins explains his lectures clearly and makes concepts easy to understand. The notes are a little bit hard to read so you may always need to keep the textbook with you. Exams are fairly graded and the contents are related to the exercises. A great professor overall.
Talks very slowly and scanned course notes are messy, not properly rotated and barely legible so I never used them at all. For online classes he mostly just reads the scanned course notes online but when he actually wrote stuff on a whiteboard lectures were far more engaging. Other than that a good prof, exams are fair, you can't go wrong with him
Really a good prof, and besides one assignment of his which was hell, the others were very reasonable. I'd give him a 4 for difficulty since its quite hard for someone like me who's not the best at math. The final was definitely tough, but the midterms are reasonable.
Nice guy and a good professor. He taught the course well and mostly was willing to explain until you get it. He is a harsh marker, however, especially on midterms. You have to really practice a lot to get an A because his tests leave no room for trying to figure something out.
He clearly explains every concept and will answer questions until you understand. The weekly assignments weren't hard and were pretty much free marks. The midterms and quizzes were also pretty easy. The final exam was harder but was still manageable. Overall, he's a great professor who will really help you understand the content.
Take this prof! This was my third class taught by him, and he's been great every time. The course itself is already pretty straight forward, but Desjardins is really good at explaining concepts and he really knows what he's talking about. Tests were graded fairly and weren't too difficult.
Second time I've had him, and he's just excellent. Explanations are very clear, covers good examples in class, tests are straightforward and very reflective of what we see in class, gives useful practice problems, and his lectures are great. If I could have him for every class, I would lol
Overrated . his notes useless he uses them regularly for figures and some lectures . SUPER tough test grading specially for final . One missing sign or anything you'll lose more than half of the marks for that question even if it's correct. avoid him if you can go with more organizes proffs
He's not bad at all Calc 1 is very easy, Replies to Emails. His Lectures are slightly boring but its fine. Very 4/5
This prof is probably as good as its going to get for ANY math class. He is super straightforward in his lectures and does not expect anything extraordinary for the tests. The questions for both tests were easy and straightforward no trick question, nothing we haven't seen before. Best. Math. Prof. Ever.
Amazing professor! I really looked forward to the lectures with Dr. Desjardins, so much so, that I was actually disappointed when he had to cancel a lecture due to technical difficulties. The class is extremely interesting and he teaches the class with passion. If you get the opportunity to take this class, don't miss out!
Great prof! Had him for history of mathematics. I wish this class was offered more often such that I could also have taken history of math II. Class is really interesting, the techniques from history are insightful! Would highly recommend this class and this professor. Tests reflect the material, no surprises! Prof is definitely one of the best!
very good to take his courses, clean and clear notes, esay lovely final
Great prof! Not boring and explains concepts very well! Always ready to help his students.
Best professor ever.
Good guy who cares about his students, office hours are very accessible. Overall, this was a tough course but his lectures and notes made it MORE difficult. Consider Maltais if you require clear notes to study from.
Calculus II is easily the hardest course I've taken. Steven makes this awful course actually learnable, with his well throughout explanations and various examples. Easily one of the bests.
Took his class for cal I II and ODE's, easily the best prof I've ever taken. His strength is organizing the content in a logical order and giving clear examples. He is able to explain everything so clearly because of his thorough understanding of the material and where it comes from. Every single other prof could learn a thing or two from him.
Great prof, gives good lectures, assignments and tests are very easy. Hardest part of the course is trying to read his cursive handwriting on the notes!
He's a really nice guy and a good lecturer. When I took the course, there weren't any assignments but there have been in the past so that may change. If you do the practice questions he gives you should be fine, he marks fairly easily. He is available and answers questions very well.
The legend himself. Best proff at uo.
Desjardins is the best math professor I've had at the University of Ottawa. I did my undergrad in engineering and so I had him for ODEs and PDEs. Friendly and approachable after hours. The old assignments are very similar to the tests/exams, so as long as you can answer all of them no problem then the assessments should be a walk in the park.
Excellent prof. Explains things clearly, knows the content well, tells you what content is be required to be known, and provides theory along with ample examples.
He is so nice and his class was awesome! One of the best Prof in UOttawa
Great prof makes everything understandable, very easy course, and tells you what is coming on the tests and final. Just make sure to practice!
Writes all lecture notes by hand. He knows his stuff.
Amazing lectures. So great at explaining complicated concepts. There are so many examples in every lecture to help everyone understand. He also writes everything on the chalkboard and doesn't read off slides which I prefer since he is actively explaining each problem/scenario. However, if you miss a lecture, you miss everything for that lesson.
The final exam was extremely hard and was 60% multiple choice so either you got it right or wrong,
Incredible lectures. All done on chalkboard, so be ready to copy down notes quickly. Really proficient at making complicated concepts relatively easy to understand. Midterms were simple enough but the exam was wayyyyy more difficult. Very important to attend lectures and ask questions whenever you don't fully understand something
The lectures were all written down on the chalk board and were easy to follow, however, if you weren't following good luck cause the posted notes are in heavy cursive. The midterms and exam were fair and fairly easy if you studied. The weekly assignments were hard but helped to understand the material and were a great mark booster.
Amazing professor! His lectures were on chalkboard so he didn't go too fast and explained all concepts super well. Easy midterms, the final was slightly harder but totally fair. Did not make anything feel too hard and posted SO MUCH practice that was very similar to the exams. Great professor I would love to have him again!
Professor Desjardins' lectures have always been on the easier side to understand. His History of Mathematics I course was really interesting. His tests are fair and I found them to be on the easier side, after studying the past tests and assignments he provided, as well as reviewing all the lecture examples. He is also responsive on email!
Excellent lectures - the professor explains complex concepts clearly. While midterms are fair, the final exam is challenging. Using unstuckstudy ai along with the textbook is very helpful for succeeding in this course.
Great prof. Go to class because he writes everything on the chalkboard. He explains everything super clearly and tells you exactly what to expect on exams. Had him for MAT1320 too and he was great. As long as you go to lectures and complete the practice problems you will succeed.
Good professor. Only does lectures on the chalk board and the published notes are not very good. Midterms were fairly easy, but final was very hard.
Desjardins is the best math teacher in the world. He handwrites everything on the board so it isn't too fast, gives amazing explanations and speaks very clearly (something other uOttawa math profs really struggle with). If you have the chance to take his class, do it. The rest of the faculty should learn some pedagogy from him.
His lectures are easy to understand and well paced, giving you time to write down everything and listen. Midterms were easy and the final was fair. Note that the course notes he posts are 20 years old and difficult to read, so if you miss a class, ask a classmate for notes. If you can take his class, please do; he really makes the class interesting
Take any course with him that you can! My absoloute favourite prof I've ever had. His explanations are clear, he starts with the background, then the formulas you need, then examples. Once you get his rythym down its a breeze. He also has old lectures, assignments, and exams posted on Brightspace. 12/10!
Phenomenal professor - his lectures were clear and the most engaging ones I've had all year. The lecture notes posted online are a bit hard to read though, not completely illegible but I recommend asking someone you know in the class for notes if you miss one.
love this professor!
In terms of conveying the course material in an effective manner to students, he is without a doubt the greatest I've encountered yet. Made MAT1322 a breeze. Just make sure to show up to lectures, as he does everything on the blackboard.
Hard course but he teaches it well
Very passionate teacher. Mobius is trash for hw tho
Clearly knows his stuff well, doesn't ever stutter. He doesn't use a mic however, and if you're sitting at the back of the >200 person class we were in I have no idea how you could hear anything.
Nice and he's good at what he teaches. He is always very quick to answer emails with any questions. If you have questions during the lecture he will try to go over them and is overall a great professor. If you have any problems seeing, it's best to show up early and get a seat at the front because it's hard to see small numbers on a chalkboard.
