Steve rules!
steve grades papers really hard. his tests are hard. his doesnt use overheads he just scribbles all over the board there is no flow to his lessons. hes a BAD teacher
Steve Duck was a great teacher. The discussions he led were extremely enjoyable to come to. I love the assignments because they were very open-ended so we were able to apply our own knowledge to the papers/assignments.
I really enjoyed this class. The only thing that you might want to change is make your essay assignments are little more clear
Great course & instructor. Interesting material, fun class!
Best class and teacher I've had my entire college career (and its been a long time) I LOVE Steve Duck
I personally had a difficult time w/ the essays in this course b/c I tried to do what was expected + got my papers back + it wasn't. I think you should have more specific guidelines! Otherwise, great course!
This is a great class. I really enjoyed all aspects of it. I learned a lot but never felt the stress I feel in other classes.
This course was much more intersting than others. Only thing is may be give more paper guidelines. Some assignments were confusing
I like that the paper questions were broad -- but a little more direction or even grading expectations would have been helpful
Overall I really enjoyed this class but I was discouraged about the pop quizzes. The first one was good b/c it was at the end of class and if you paid attention, you did alright, but the second one at the beginning of class discouraged me b/c I did not go over my notes before classs.
This course could be vastly improved with minor modifications: 1) Less lecture and more class discussion; 2) exercises applying course materials to personal relationships; 3) closer correlation between class material and assigned reading; 4) Clearer progression from area to area across the smester. We seem to cover the same material repeatedly
I wish the grading had been split differently w/ the 2nd paper worth more b/c at that point in the semester I had a LOT better understanding of the material than after the first couple of weeks.
I relly enjoyed this class. I thought lectures for the most part were very interesting and intreguing. I liked the informal atmosphere of the class. Teachers who are easy to talk to such as this one are very encouraging to students.
I enjoyed class and you made it fun to be there. The only advice I would give is to provide more written documentation in terms of what is expected for papers, maybe just a short outline
Course material was interesting. Found that I was able to use and relate to certain concepts. I think I personally needed more of an outline and what is expected in papers.
This clalss is my favorite class in this university. Thanks to Prof Duck for his time and efforts.
Best class I ever had at Iowa, it changed my life. It is a pleasure to listen to someone who knows their material inside and out. Turns out, he is very well respected in the field. Everyone should take this class!!
I love professor Duck. His accent is great- and he explains information so that everyone can understand, not to make it sound easy but he just gives great insight to situations. And i love that he uses personal examples.
I don't know why people like Duck so much. He was very hard to follow in lecture. The tests were only 20 points and proctored poorly. So if you didn't actually cheat- It was your loss. If you did study for the test- the grades did not show it. But grades are ‘arbitrary’ so who cares. Most students didn’t take the class very seriously. Stay away!
Professor Duck was the best professor I've EVER had! He incorporates wit and humor into his lectures and keeps you interested the entire time. Reccommended!! *****
Good class! Overall pretty simple (especially if you took Interpersonal Comm. before). His lectures are interesting, very little reading, and helpful information. He makes sure you are understsmding the material and is available for question, etc.
Has become one of my favorite profs at the university. His humor (and accent) makes lectures interesting as well as his little side comments and stories he inserts. Very helpful when seeking his assistance in understanding concepts, and gives you plenty of information to do well on tests and assignments. Definitely take Steve Duck if you can!
This is one of the easiest classes I have ever taken
Steve is one of the most brilliant professors I've ever have. I want to marry him and have little Duck babies with him. He's witty and fun and his class is very enjoyable.
Perhaps it was a matter of bad chemistry however I have never before dropped a class just because I didn't like a professor's character. I agree that he is brilliant however he was a huge jerk to me which may be attributed to the classist nature I believe him to have.
Decent teacher, knows what he's talking about. Tries to make things interesting, funny sometimes. Very fair grader, nice exams.
Duck is a quirky little guy. Sometimes he's hilarious, and lecture gets out 10 minutes early every time. You literally don't need to read the books. My one meeting in his office hours was pleasant and very helpful. Very easy tests. Recommended.
Interesting lecture, but...syllabus for assignments was very vague, if not missing entirely. Received poor grades on reflection papers due to lack of assignment direction. Was told that my low B was a strong grade on a final project. Should have reviewed his book for extra credit...
LOVED Duck. Best teacher I've had at Iowa. Amazingly good at relating communication to real life experiences, quirky yes but very insightful. I learned a lot. Other people complained about assignments but I found them easy to understand and even easier to do. GREAT class whether your a Comm major or not.
Amazing Professor, knows his stuff beyond all others. Very helpful. If you pay attention, your rewards are far more than you imagined. Brilliant and quite witty. Take him, take him, take him.
His lectures are entertaining, but that's about the only good part about his class. Pointless assignment that can help your grade but mostly only hurt it. Lots of information to study for test even tho he only puts 20 questions, and they are random. The test are impossible. I suggest not taking him.
The tests are difficult - he only has 20 m.c. questions per test for half the material covered in the course - WRONG. Average test score is C- (WRONG). I received a 79.5% in the course and he wouldn't round up to a B- (WRONG). I would never take a class from him again. Wish he was better b/c the course material is interesting!!
I took the online verious of his class, not worth your time! He never fully answers your questions and his grading is totally off! Even though I did well, I wouldn't suggest his class!
Stupendous professor with great lecturing skills - AND he wrote the book. Very approachable and very kind to me when family problems upset my schedule. A brilliant guy who can give great insights into ordinary life
JUST ONE WORD. MEANINGLESS. HE DIDNT LISTEN WHAT STUDENT SAID, LECTURE IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND, TEST IS TRICKY, PARTICIPATION OR TAP PAPER HAS NO STANDARD. EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE
Be sure to use the flashcards and practice quizzes on the website he gives you before the tests because they're tricky. He's super sarcastic and uses good examples during lecture, but the weekly assignments weren't easy points.
Superb class; well organized; excellent lectures, often hilarious; learned a lot about everyday life and lots of great examples. Finally got the point of TAP exercises after a while and they really helped me learn to listen to life
Dr. Ducks lectures are pretty pointless because they are so ambiguous. I could rarely look at the slides after a lecture and understand what he was trying to get at. Use the online SAGE study sight, it's a life saver. He gives out "dummy exams" before all tests, and these things are extremely similar to the actual exam. Take the class.
Good class with insightful sometimes hilarious lectures. He did seem bored a bit of the time but livened up when students spoke or he could bounce off there comments. TAPS helped me to learn to listen to everyday talk. Good class.
Thanks, Ducky, for one of the best classes at the UI. Completely changed the way think about daily communication and gave lots of smart insights in lectures, stepping off the book with examples and humor.
I really liked class with Prof. Duck. His humor is really dry, but if you pay attention he's normally pretty witty. He comes alive when students interact with him and discussion was probably the most helpful thing in this class. I'd recommend him. Put in the time to study and you'll be fine!
Great guy, very helpful, knows what he is doing
Professor Duck was extremely nice and helpful when asked. The class had a lot of in-class activities that didn't seem to have a real purpose. The assignments were a lot easier that a lot of other Rhetoric classes and feedback was given when asked.
I took his everyday communication class. Loved it. Very interesting topics and he is well versed in the topic. Also, extremely nice and you can tell he tries! Thank you Professor Duck :)
He's nice but the tests are hard and you have to really study to pass
He is odd and very boring. He assigns weekly papers and graded harshly.
Professor Duck was a great professor! I took the honors version of Rhetoric, and it was a lot of work, but you got out what you put in. Professor Duck made the class very interesting, and helped each person individually to improve their Rhetoric skills.
Steve made rhetoric bearable. You can tell he cares a lot about the students in his class and genuinely wants them to do well.
Duck was fantastic. He was hilarious, but in a subtle way. He genuinely cares about his students' success and gives great feedback on assignments. His comments on my papers were often longer than my paper itself. He gives an average of 2 assignments per week but sometimes the directions aren't clear, so be sure to ask questions. "Rhetoric Rocks!"
Don't take a class with him. Self-congratulatory and you won't learn much. Dude is unbearable
Duck thinks he's master of all. If you want a class where there will be real conversation, don't take Rhetoric with him. He thinks he "has all the answers." By which I mean he has a hard time listening to students or exploring things with us. There are a lot of really good Rhetoric instructors you should sign up for one of their classes.
I really enjoy this class and learn a lot that can be applied to many different fields. I like that it isn't super structured so we have time to discuss different things that come up. I like all the work we do in groups.
I think Professor Duck's teaching style is unique and puts emphasis on improvement and constructive criticism.
I really enjoyed to community feeling built within the class. I felt very friendly with everyone, which make it all less nerve racking. Overall, I had a good time! Thanks!
I promise you don't want to take a class with Steve Duck. His classroom is not friendly, it is people trying to impress him and him liking it. I get that college is about a grade, but rhetoric should be about learning and exploring. not earning praise in class. This person is just not a good teacher
Thanks Professor Duck! We all got very lucky with this class! I was a little worried that I wouldn't like my rhetoric course but he and the other people in this class created a wonderful environment. I learned so much, both about rhetoric and other things. I enjoyed the classes and everyone's presentations were extremely interesting as well.
I am an honors student. Professor Duck is just not a good professor. Good professors talk with their students, not AT their students. They also show intelligence through critical questioning. Duck thinks he knows a lot but the questions he asks are not good questions, which is what Rhetoric is for. Really. Take RHET with someone else.
I really enjoyed having Duck as a professor, he made everything seem easy to understand. The only issue was that the assignments were kind of unclear. But other than that, he gave really good feedback and taught me many things that I'll use throughout my life.
: What do you consider your instructor's main strengths? He is very well-worded, being both English and a Rhetoric professor. He is also very passionate about the class and it really shows in discussion. He is also very helpful when I come into his office during office hours when I need help with my papers or speeches.
He was very helpful and gave constructive criticism. Also, he would play the devil's advocate, which is a good thing because it forced us all to think about the opposing side's view.
Nope.
I was always excited to go to this class. The discussion was stimulating and I always felt like I either improved a skill or learned something new when I left.
I overall enjoyed this class and Dr. Duck created a meaningful structure that connected the majors of each student to rhetoric and the topics discussed. I am grateful that he purposefully created assignments tailored towards "STEM" based majors. I also appreciated his efforts to help each student individually and personally make comments on assignm
Communication and his confidence in his students. Steve had faith in my abilities when I didn't have any in myself and sometimes that's the best quality you can ask for in a professor. I don't enjoy English classes of any kind, so I was kind of dreading this one, but truly Steve is the reason I didn't hate this class. He was very encouraging and un
He is very prompt in handing back assignments with comments he has added. Also, he takes the time to learn about each student's topic of choice for the major assignments in the course, provide extra sources he has found on his own relating to the subject, and provide knowledge from what he has found. He is well rounded in his knowledge in general.
You don't want to take a class with him. Also, he asked some students to write comments here about him which tells you something
One crazy failing student tried to organize a campaign against him on Ratemyprofessor but I agree with the others in my class who nominated him for a teaching prize. He lets you work on projects that interest you and that is very rare. I would take him again in a heartbeat but he only teaches introductory rhetoric.
He was very well-worded, being both English and a Rhetoric professor. He was also very passionate about the class and it really showed in discussion. He was also very helpful when I came into his office during office hours when I needed help with my papers or speeches.
I did understand his comments. I understood his feedback on my assignments and I'm glad that he gave it to us on every assignment, regardless of whether or not it was for a grade. I feel as though this helped me improve as a researcher and writer.
Dr. Duck's strengths were definitely his ability to connect with students, his ability to teach the skills of rhetoric in an interesting manner and he kept class mood very light. He also had a great sense of humor.
I consider my instructor's main strength the ability to facilitate students trying something new. He encouraged us to try new ideas and explore options that may not have been considered before. Through this he provided assistance, while at the same time allowing us to figure out things for ourselves.
I got a B+ in this class. Prof Duck is awful and thinks he is terrific, it's a terrible combo. My advice is to take Rhetoric with one of the younger, newer teachers. My friends classes were a lot better than ours.
Prof. Duck gives great feedback. He also makes sure you see both sides of the argument you're trying to give. Responds to emails quickly. Overall an interesting and caring guy.
Professor Duck really enjoys what he teaches and really shows care in students' work. He provides excellent feedback and encourages students to improve. Very understanding and motivates students to continue the good work by providing feedback but also commenting on the strengths of an assignment/presentation as well.
He organized every class very well. I saw the complete plan for the whole semester before attending the first class. He is very patient and willing to give the clear instructions for us. He gave us only few requirements for assignments, writings, and presentations, which allowed me to do more critical thinking
Professor Duck is amazing. He gives such good feedback on assignments and really cares about every student. The topic for our papers and speeches were completely up to us, which made it much more interesting to write about. Would recommend!
Prof Duck is one of the most amazing profs of the university. Needless to say, he's the DEO of the Rhetoric Department so he definitely knows what he is doing. He is super approachable outside the classroom setting, excellent at giving constructive feedback. I think he only teaches honors class so be prepared for his high expectations as well.
Don't take a class with him
Awesome turnaround and feedback on homework; really cares about students who want to learn; very harsh on slackers. Has a very different and interesting take on Rhetoric and let's you research you're own interests, which is rare. If you want an easy A take someone else; if you want to learn something useful and in- depth take him.
This professor can be kind of rude sometimes, sometimes it is hard to understand fully what he wants, (one time I didnt know if I should be writing a persuasive or research paper) and I do not recommend taking his class if you dont like groups, also do not take the 2 hour one!
Dude, no. Trust me, take Rhetoric with someone else
HIs class has pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me academically in so many ways, and I will take the skills that I learned in this class with me to my future classes and career.
A great professor! He made taking rhetoric a mostly painless process, which I was insecure about and had impeded me from taking this course earlier in my education. I wish all students could experience taking this course with him,
Really good professor. Genuinely wants you to be better and always was there for every student. Knew our names the first day of class. Really passionate.
As I prepare to graduate I realize that his rhetoric class freshman year was a huge influence on me, especially the project portion at the end where I did my own research. Learning how to communicate the exciting idea of my research to others had a large impact on my passion for medicine.
Prof. Duck is one of the most amazing people I know in Iowa. His class is structural and he's very knowledgeable about the topic. He could be giving some sort of not so understandable feedback but at the same, he's super approachable outside classroom so take that advantage. Not a tough grader at all
He gives feedback fast, it's true. I did well in his class. But he uses his students to feel important and it is seriously annoying. Anyone taking Rhetoric with him should know he is self important going in
Prof. Duck made the class very interesting - he has a unique take on rhetoric. He allowed us to pick our own topics for research, gave great feedback, and was super kind and accessible in and out of class. He's a fair grader. We broke into discussion groups during most classes, and he gave us appropriate time to work on papers and projects.
This course was one I genuinely looked forward to--he made me very relieved and supported with his flexibility in office hours and offering feedback. So, thanks for being such a phenomenal professor.
This class taught me a lot and I am very grateful to have an instructor like him. He was very supportive and taught us very well. We all really enjoyed this class
Professor Duck tries to be supportive but he is not a good teacher. His communication is really bad for a Rhet professor. I think he is used to people respecting him because he is british and a man, he just does NOT listen to his students in a real way
Professor Duck is one of the most supportive professors I have ever had. He gives incredible feedback and is really looking out for our best interest. There is a decent amount of classwork, but it becomes self paced towards the end which I really enjoyed.
I enjoyed how discussion centered this was and how we were able to learn from the professor but also from peers. Good stress on improvement and doing the best you can, rather than just checking off boxes. I did really enjoy having Duck this semester. He is a very caring and supportive professor with a different teaching style that is valuable.
I had a really good experience with Dr. Duck. Even though it was an online class I felt like I was in a classroom and knew all of the other students in the class. Dr. Duck did a good job of answering all of my questions and gave good feedback at the end of the semester.
Dr. Duck will likely be one of the most caring professors you will ever meet. Some students had a hard time finding benefit in his "non-directional" methods, but I think the way he teaches and provides criticism builds useful skills to use outside of the class. Duck helped me through some very hard times and I'll be forever grateful.
Duck made sure you had to think through your assignments. Although some students didn't like this, I thought it allowed me to gain more analytical skills. The in class analysis was useful, Dr. Duck was very knowledgeable. Good Environment.
The fact that specific guidelines ("this paper needs to be 2000 words") weren't set out helped me learn to trust my own instinct and to do my work to the best of my ability rather than just what the guidelines set out. Duck always said that confusion is the beginning of learning, and now I understand why.
The professor was very understanding and had many opportunities for support even reaching out sometimes.
I do not recommend this professor. He is not a good teacher and made a lot uf us uncomfortable
I liked how much he made us talk in front of class and interact with classmates. It made me feel more comfortable when I had to present at the end of the year.
Professor Duck's feedback on homework and exams was always detailed and critical yet encouraging. It allowed me to improve my work with each assignment. The deadlines for rough drafts also prevented me from procrastinating on important projects.
We were given extensive time to practice presenting in front of our peers. This allowed me personally to become more confident and comfortable when it came time to actually give my presentation to the whole class. I loved howwe started out slowly, first just presenting our ideas to a small group and then gradually increasing our group size until we
Showing up to class and listening to Dr. Duck's lectures were crucial to success in this class, and his communication with students was outstanding.
I learned a lot that I never expected to learn in college, he taught this course very well
Professor Duck was extremely caring and helpful. The major assignments forced us to apply rhetoric to real-life research in our major which made the material seem very applicable and useful. He graded things somewhat easily but rarely gave full credit on an assignment. He gave fast and extensive feedback on everything. Great guy!
Dr. Duck is very helpful when students need any feedback or help with an assignment. He is very passionate about rhetoric, which makes the class much more enjoyable. It is nice knowing he is more than happy to help if I needed it.
Do not take rhetoric with this professor. Trust me!!! You will not want to go to class. There are a lot of other better choices.
Dr. Duck made sure you had to think through your assignments. Although some students didn't like this, I thought it allowed me to gain more analytical skills. The in class analysis was useful, Dr. Duck was very knowledgeable. Good Environment.
The way Dr. Duck teaches and his assignments were all useful in helping me think about research and presentations differently. I definitely learned a lot in this class.
This course was incredibly helpful for both the subject itself and for my future career path. The biggest help for me was the feedback after each major paper or presentation: it was always honest yet constructive. Practicing with my peers and having them review my papers was also very helpful as this class was full of bright, open-minded thinkers.
Dr Duck is a seriously bad Professor. If you are signed up to take rhetoric with him, take steps to change to another teacher ASAP. You will be glad you did.
I really liked how we were encouraged to pick a topic that we were interested in/correlates with our major. I spent the majority of the time outside of class researching something that I was genuinely interested in. What I was finding while doing this research also helped me in my other classes which was really cool!
This course was incredibly helpful for both the subject itself and my future career path. The biggest help for me was the feedback after each major paper or presentation, always honest yet constructive. I also think practicing with my peers and having them review my papers was very helpful because class was full of bright, open-minded thinkers.
Dr. Duck likes to post about himself on this website to make him sound like he's a good teacher. You know if he's gotta do that that he's not
He gives good feedback on papers, but is a difficult grader. You have to show up to every class and work hard if you want to earn an A. Overall enjoyable class, but know that he is a difficult grader.
Steve is a great rhetoric professor. He made the class interesting and engaging. Attendance is not mandatory, but he uses class time well to prepare you for papers and presentations. He also gives good feedback and is accessible outside of class if you email him.
Instructions for assignments are extremely unclear and vague. He speaks like a person who has been studying rhetoric for decades, so if you want a professor who gets directly to the point and doesn't speak in riddles, Duck is not for you. He is a nice guy who is accessible out of class, but it is hard to know what he wants, and grades reflect that.
Steve made me question my academic abilities (not in a good way) and gave very vague feedback on papers making it really hard to know what he was looking for. If you're taking rhetoric you should find another professor. Also lots of busy work, overall did not enjoy the class
I loved the course. Others might disagree, but I loved the projects and getting to present on a topic in my major. I also loved that feedback he gave was so helpful. He was always willing to meet with me. One of the best professors I have had. His comments on my presentation were so kind and made me feel proud of myself. Cares about his students.
Really enjoyed rhetoric with Prof Duck! His kind and soft personality made the learning environment welcoming. The two-hour class never seemed to be that long and he often finished early
I had a great experience taking your class, and I am glad to learn so many new things about research and being a persuasive writer/speaker while actively looking for ways to detect bias. I believe that every instructor should be passionate about their teachings and provide decent feedback on assignments just as you were. Thank you.
BEWARE. I missed one assignment in the first module of this class. According to Steve, this meant that I had to drop the class or receive an F. That's it. His syllabus mandates that every assignment be turned in on time, and that no late work will be accepted. If you miss any deadline by more than a day, you have effectively failed the class.
Prof Duck brings a personal touch to rhetoric. While the workload can be heavy, his thoughtful feedback and willingness to meet make it worthwhile. unstuckstudy is a great study tool to supplement the course.
Dr. Duck is own of the smartest people I have ever met. Yes, there are a lot of assignments and he usually takes 0.5 points of each for who knows why, but truly it is not hard to get an A in this class. Dr. Duck is so caring and passionate about what he teaches. He lets you out of class early most times too.
