Very nice teacher!!!
Intruction Felder is by far the most influential teacher I have ever come in contact with. His passion for this subject and skill in teaching has forced me to encompass my daily life around our assigned readings and has also influenced my increasing drive for knowledge. Please take his class, you WILL enjoy it.
His passion for the material is what makes this class so interesting. He's also very helpful and clearly explains what he's trying to get across to us.
really nice guy
He knows his stuff! He is very clear in his lecture which makes the class flow easily. He goes over all reading during class which makes everything easier to understand. Very nice professor. If you're not interested in the beginning his explanation of everything will suck you in.
It's hard to fail the class if you show that you are the slightest interested and do the work. He is clear and helpful and obviously loves what he teaches.
Very understanding and approachable.... will help with anything..... very enthusiastic on what he teaches and just wants you to learn.... reading and going to class is important though
He is very resourceful and will go out of the way to explain the material. Very credible teacher, with Ph.D and beyond a great education, understands how to explain the material in an approachable manner.

He tried to make the class very interesting! I became interested after we got past Philosophy (since I cant stand it). Everything else was really interesting. And I had no interest in this class till I got in it.
Professor Felder is very helpful. The material that is used has heightened my awareness. He is very easy to approach and welcomes your questions. I have thoroughly enjoyed his class.
he's so helpful and made boring History understandable and fun. It's not your everyday history class. it has the everyday life of ordinary people approach to it. it's not an easy A class but if you do your readings and show effort, you should do fine! and he gets cuter everyday!! hahaha
HARDEST class ever taken, and most reading ever done in a single class..but honestly i believe i've learned more in it than any other class i've taken. prof. felder is very helpful in and out of class and explains most of the test questions in lecture. keep up with the reading, lots of quizes.
Though the materials that u gotta read r kind of heavy, but keep up w/ the work, take notes, don't miss class, do come to exam review sessions, those will pay off, big time. (don't worry if u dont get the text the 1st time u read it, most ppl don't, just at least read it & have an idea, then he'll help u walk through the rest)
The course material is tough and he asks you to be pretty familiar with a lot of the readings, but he's a very generous grader.
This class was awesome and prof. Felder makes it really interesting, he is passionate about what he teaches and I have learned a lot after taking this class. The tests are a bit challenging but he is not very strict when it comes to grading. I would definitly take another one of his classes, I'm sure I could learn even more interesting things.
Professor Felder is awesome. It is very obvious he has a passion for what he teaches. The reading he assigns is extremely difficult, but very interesting. Felder makes his classes fun and the students want to be there. He explains everything thoroughly and is vey clear with what he wants. is ALWAYS willing to help no matter what.
funny guy. He knows his material through heart & will do watever it takes to make sure u get it. A LOT OF READING AND WRITING but he does go over the reading in class and tell u wat he's looking for in ur essays. VERY HELPFUL. Tough class but if u give ur best & seek help from him as much as possible, 100% sure U WILL GET AN A.
Does not present the information in an understandable way. Runs through the slides to fast without explaining a lot of the stuff. Exams were very hard. Only 1 person got an A. He is a very smart man, perhaps too smart.
Terrible.Tests are much harder than anything he gives you beforehand. Avoid at all costs.
First of all, Felder is a great teacher. Yeah he is difficult and challenging, but thats what makes it interesting. He loves helping his students and cares for everyone in his class. So, only one person in your class got an A? I took his class last sem. and I, along with four other colleagues I associated with in that class all got A's.
My latest information is, 12 students got A, 15 people -B, 7-C, and 7 people got F!! Yes, class is really hard, but Prof. Felder is always helping. His lecture is really funny and he is really sweet . Friend of mine, she got B 1st, then, explained to him about her argument, he understood and gave her A. And so far, I got A also!
Mr. Felder is a very good teacher. He points out helpful material for his test, in addtion he illustrates good teaching methods during lectures. He can relate to his students, therefore if you need help he will be their to help you. I would recommend him to anybody that needs Humanties as a credit. Why Felder?...bottom line, students dig him!
professor Felder is Awesome! He cares about everyone in his class and is always there to help. His tests are kinda hard, but if you go to class than its an easy A. I defintley recommend him, he's the best teacher i've had so far, and he's really clear INTELLIGENT, fair and sweet.
Mr. Felder is very smart and he is very passionate about what he teaches. His class is tough, but if you do the work and you take the time to understand the material, you will do just fine. He is a funny guy, and tries to make the class enjoyable for everyone. He understands that the material is sometimes boring, but he tries his best to keep it fun
Clearly a very intelligent and cultural person. Professor Felder made me want to attend class! You cant help but be interested in his lectures. I absorbed so much information and it was just a constant learning experience more then ive ever had in my education. He seems very sweet and an intellectual. I wish he taught more classes at IVC!
Very kind, caring, and approachable. He is a bastion of knowledge! Go to his office hour..you won't regret it. Not hard as other ratings suggest!!! He is an altogether great man and scholar.
The best professor I've ever had! He has really interesting material and insightful things to say. He really made my experience wonderful and helped me choose my major. He is always available if you need help.
I am in love with Professor Felder.
Steve loves teaching ad loves hummanities. Even if you don't want to take this class (me) you'll ending up liking a lot of it. He gives 3 written exams and 2 essays. Going to class is key seeing that he goes over everything so make sure to take good notes! It's a lot of work but he encourages you to just do your best and he'll meet you half way.
Hon Myth was an entertaining class only problem was that there was a lot of hard reading. He is a good prof but tends to discuss only one part of a huge reading and a lot of times I was confused at the end of class because a lot of what I had read wasn't really explained in class. Quizzes every day, which is actually a good thing cuz it made u read
Easy A: U will learn influential material, he treats students on a college level, SO he is Fair and will not cheat the system in passing you the 3 unit course. Which means there will be Work. He is an Amazing prof and will teach you all the info. COME to class, take NOTES, pay Attention! Extremely helpful and Sincere. IVC's valued prof!
Ths Professor is really good. He hands out study guides a week before the exam, if you fill them out you will get an A on every exam. There was only one paper due on the last day of the semester. He is clear with his material. TAKE HIM.
Great teacher! very nice guy
What a nice man. The class online is really interesting and the assignments that correspond with the reading are interesting too. Not too hard, but you still have to try. If you need an elective take this class!
Felder has a great personality. I got an A in the class and it was completely unrelated to my major. There is a lot of reading involved, but as long as you keep up with it you will get a good grade. Do the journals, they are worth more than tests.
This class was not easy!! There was a lot of difficult reading and writing but it is all worth it. I got an A but to me it didn't matter, what he teaches you in this class is more important than the letter grade you receive. Take this class it's a life changer!
I can't imagine a better teaching style for this sort of material. In class he acts as though he's letting you in on secrets about ancient peoples, societies and writers. This generates more interest in you than you would expect. You don't really have to read everything, but you'd better pay attention in class or you're done.
Stephen Felder is a very knowledgeable guy. He speaks with great clarity and really knows his stuff. Attendance is not mandatory but if you dont show up you will probably fail. I didnt read all of the books, just came to class and listened, and I got an A. That said, I am a good listener and can really grasp topics if I apply myself. Great Guy!
Felder is great! He explains key passages in each text (the ones you should review). the study guides are extremely helpful. attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go you'll miss out on his explanations. great class, really makes you think and question ideas etc. :) i would so recommend him!
Felder is absolutely captivating. He teaches with a passion and a posture that totally memorizes me. He is relatable, compassionate, witty, and gentle (a la Randy Pausch). The man is hilarious and sharp as a tack; I could sing his praises all day. I want to take every class he teaches just to hear him analyze and to peek into the top of his head a
This class is very informative and you will learn. Just follow the syllabus and show some sense of understanding and intuitiveness and you should not get less than an "A." This class does take up a lot of time though, so don't assume you can coast on by.
Professir Felder is really a swell guy. He's cultured, open-minded, and interesting to listen to. They way he speaks to the class makes him relatable. You don't need to be an expert on the stuff he teaches to get a good grade in his class. Just show interest and go to class. Althought class isn't mandatory, it's recommended if you want to do well.
Felder is a good guy. His class is interesting, entertaining, and I completely agree- he is captivating. LOVE HIM!
Memories from his classes will be very fond. He is sweet and enthusiastic about what he is teaching, and I learned so much about Greek mythology now, after having absolutely no exposure before. I am transferring to CSULB next semester, but taking his class makes me want to come back for more. He opened the door to literature for me.
Felder is an awesome teacher. He tells you everything you need to know for the test. But pay attention you have to take good notes, he doesnt spell it out for you. I didnt do the readings but read the passages he discussed in class and went to every class and got a B. His class is hard but very rewarding. Dont miss class you will be so lost
Really great professor, lectures super interesting. I am not a Humanities person, love math and science but found his class very rewarding. He gives you everything you need to get an A but you do have to earn it. Take him if you need Humanities
I took honors HUM 4 with Felder. I was seriously considering dropping it because the reading and workload was so time consuming for a 6-week course. I'm really glad I stuck it out though. I feel like I really learned a lot...which is a lot more than I can say for the majority of classes at ivc. Great professor!
My favorite professor on campus. He is very nice, interesting, intelligent, and open minded. Lots of reading but it is very interesting and explained very well in class. This class blows my mind and changed me because of felder. MUST TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
I needed just 3 units to transfer to UCI, for the Fall quarter. Awesome class. Dr. Felder is a great professor. There are some interesting books that you have to read, and you can print out the powerpoint slides from his class website, so you can take better notes, during his lectures.
I took Dr. Felder's Hum 4 class over the summer which was pretty intense. 13 texts for a 6 week class. Even he always asked why we took the class while shaking his head at the amount of work. He came across as a great professor, but with such a condensed class I think the experience really suffered. It was fun, but rough.
Great professor! You learn a lot from this class. Attendance isn't mandatory but his lectures are extremely helpful for exams. Also, if you aren't understanding something, make sure to ask him. He is very helpful. Just don't take this class in a shortened semester (i.e. summer) b/c it requires time to read and analyze the texts (lots of reading)
Took his HUM 22 online over the summer. Great class with clear assignments. The CD-ROM textbook was also helpful with lots of info in it. Easy A for me but I did put effort into my micro-themes and tests. Excellent communication too - very quick!
Interesting topics, but not worth the endless reading
Really intelligible teacher, but to be honest this class ruined my semester. It's a lot of conceptual thinking, so if you're science minded like I am you might have some difficulties! He doesn't give review sheets, his exams are STRICTLY off lecture and his essays are more text oriented. 3 exams and 2 essays. Exams are all short answer and essay.
Some will say this class is hard but I thought it was really easy. Just pay attention to the things he say in class and repeat it on essays and exams and you'll do well. That's usually how it goes with humanities anyway, if you agree with the teacher, you get a good grade!
Extremely intelligent individual. Class requires A LOT of reading but I learned a ton. He is an very sweet person and very approachable. I'd recommend taking this class if you don't have too much other work from your other classes. Dr. Felder rulesss!!!!
I am not the reading type and have a hard time understanding what a book is "actually" trying to say so for me this class was super hard! There is TONS of reading!! If you are a bookworm and love reading then this class is great! He's very helpful and willing to work with you like he did with me. All exams are done in blue books, so essay answers.
He's one of the best professors I've ever met when it comes to teaching. However, I had to drop his class because his readings were so hard to keep up with (especially when it's an 8-week class). I may just end up taking another class he teaches because he's undoubtedly an excellent professor.
Honors, amazing prof. Come to lecture, ask questions, be engaged. He's a REALLY lenient grader, and gave the questions ahead of time for midterms and final, but it still requires a lot of reading. My only ordeal is that he's way too intelligent to answer my questions sometimes, because he's so knopwledgable, it's hard for him to dumb it down, haha.
He is awsome!
Dr. Felder is definitely my favorite professor at IVC. And quite possibly my biggest teacher crush ever. He is incredibly intelligent, helpful, understanding, and interesting. Take his classes, you'll love them.
Prof. Felder is amazing. I'm pretty much in love with him and his teaching style. An otherwise hard course load felt like nothing because he inspires and connects with his students on multiple levels. This class taught me how to read large quantities of material in a short time too which is helpful for the university level.
He's a great Professor. A little hard reading the books because English is my second Language.
Dr. Felder is the funniest and most intellectual professor I have had in a while. I was getting terrible grades at first due to my inconsistency in attendance, but once I started showing up regularly and on time, I was able to get back on track and eventually pass the class. I recommend not missing a single day and taking good notes. You can do it!
I really really liked professor Felder! He is so intelligent it's inspiring, and he is super nice and funny. The only thing is his classes involve LOTS of reading, and you should read everything if you want an A. I didn't do that and got a B, but I really wish that I had. I'm going to take another class of his and actually do the reading :P
HE IS AMAZING!!!! TAKE THIS CLASS!! I thought this class was amazing. He was clear, approachable, and he is a VERY smart man. He's also funny, his lectures aren't boring at all. And they were very clear and I definitely enjoyed the class.
Be prepared to read a lot and think about your world in new ways. Absolutely take this class! Dr. Felder is an amazing professor who is able to simplify complex topics in a way that is relevant and meaningful. The work involved is well worth the effort and you will not be disappointed.
An amazing professor who can make seemingly daunting topics accessible to eager minds. Do NOT take if you plan to miss ANY classes or fall behind on reading - or else risk the same fate as a classmate who turned in a blank midterm.
He is the best professor at IVC. Classes with him are usually borderline spiritual experiences. Make sure you keep on reading but most importantly take really good notes, which is something I struggle with because I am so interested in what he is saying.
He's a good professor, I just wish I was a better student. If you can write at the speed he speaks then you'll do fine, otherwise you either need to be super duper insightful or just be able to memorize everything he says. He's got a good grading system, he's not looking to take points off.
One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. Felder introduced me to different perspectives and thoughts about the world. The lectures may seem a bit overwhelming, but they manage to convey all the significant points. It is recommended to read all assigned readings, complete the essays, and study concepts he emphasizes in class to pass.
Keep up with the reading and you'll do fine. I don't recommend this for international students because you have to write a lot and he goes pretty fast with his lectures. If you miss 1 lecture, you're pretty much done for. I recommend a recorder so you can listen to his lectures again after to refresh. He's amazing though...TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Look, it's a boring class, I know he's trying to make things fun, but I wish he didnt grade so hard. It's really not fair when I attend class everyday and I get borderline C when a student who never goes to class manages to literally get an A (attendance is optional)
Amazing professor with interesting lectures. Definitely a difficult class, especially in an eight week period. Keep up with your reading (and there's A LOT of it) and write amazing notes. Don't miss a single class. If you're willing to study, take Professor Felder's class! You won't regret it!
This class was HORRIBLE and VERY HARD. WARNING if you don't like reading boring books you won't make it. I attended most classes and struggled. His tests are HARD but he does grade pretty easy. Nice guy though glad I passed.
Good lord, whatever you do do not take this class in the summer
Took his class in the summer along with 2 other classes... Although this class took up a lot of my time I managed to get an A without reading half the books (sparknotes) and missing several lectures. If you invest an entire day on his essays and study for the final you'll manage to ace the class.
Dr. Felder's Humanities course was very difficult, being that I have not taken Writing 1 yet. I spent about 12-15 hours on each paper and studied for 3 days for the final just on his course alone. He was very helpful in guiding me knowing that I was having a difficult time in the course, good guy.
I did not appreciate this professor on a personal level. He singled me out based on bias and made the learning experience uncomfortable.Bit of a narcissist.Don't take him.
If you are a lover of wisdom, reading, and writing, this is your class!! I loved Felder and the material because it challenges you and opens up your literary world. You must invest the time. Prepare to use your brain. Many students struggled, but I loved it.
Yes, you do need to keep up with the reading because it's not an easy A, but seeing as this is my second class with him and I plan to take more, you could say I'm hooked! He's super smart and makes the class so interesting that even the most boring readings end up interesting! Just take him!
I enjoyed all of my classes with Professor Felder. He is very passionate about what he teaches & cares about his student's education. He is very understanding and is willing to listen to you if you challenge him or have a question. As long as you read the book and does his study guides & memorize it, you will get an A. I would take his class again
Negative first- He seemed to be frustrated at teaching this course in 1 vs. 2 semesters. Maybe this is why he always seemed anxious/nervous. Positive- He is very passionate, has a seminary background, and many point opportunities. Extremely interesting material and a very nice guy. I think it would have been awesome if split into two semesters.
He is a terrible professor! He is boring, doesn't make any sense and repeats everything you read in the book. The book(s) basically teach you everything and not him.
Loved Felder! He taught my favorite class last semester and I looked over to every class. I attended each one, not only because I didn't want to miss anything but also because he was very interesting and I learned a lot. If you love to read, learn, experience and expand - TAKE HIM! I learned so much with him and I hope to take another class of his.
He's very knowledgeable in the subject. He tries to answer very question. The books are mandatory and SparkNotes won't do it. Very hard if you are not interested in the subject. Keep up with the reading. Grades essay pretty hard. Put in all your effort if you want an A
It is refreshing to have a professor that is genuinely passionate about what they teach. I have already transferred on to Fullerton & I am thinking about taking one of his classes at night or over the summer. His class is not easy & there is heavy reading-I got a C & a B due to laziness-but you will always take something away from his lectures.
This is the best teacher I have ever had! He is dedicated, passionate about his teachings and cares to let his student think critically and analyze the matterial in ways that even he hasn't thought of. I also took world religions with him with was another great class!! Thank You Felder!!
I feel honored to have been able to have Professor Felder as a teacher. His intellect and passion about what he's teaching is astounding and he will do anything to help you succeed. I found that the people in my class who complained about him were just lazy. Go to his office hours and he will help you with anything you're struggling with.
One of my favorite professors at IVC. I think this was his first time teaching this class though. Two exams and two papers, plus a quiz at every class meeting. The quizzes were tough, but he gave study guides for the exams.
He was an amazing professor, but there was a ton of reading and was really hard to keep up with. If you do not like reading, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! Other than that, there are 3 exams and 3 essays. No homework. All exams are written no multiple choice. Like i said before.... HARD HARD HARD!!!
3 tests, 2 essays. lectures arecan be hard to follow and take notes on. Overall I don't feel like I learned much but he's a fairly easy grader. Doesn't take roll but you should go to class to have his understanding of the material.
Great Professor, very intelligent and knows his material extremely. Personally I found the subject boring but not take to away that he is a great teacher. You absolutely HAVE TO READ a lot of material and keep up, you will fall behind if you dont. 3 written exams and 1 term paper is what your grade it based out of. His tests are very difficult.
Great teacher! He REALLY makes you think I became more open-minded as a result of his class. To do well take VERY GOOD notes, READ and GO TO CLASS. I took this class this summer and it was challenging w the short semester, but really enjoyed him and his class. When topics are confusing, he helps w interesting examples from his life.
Dr. Felder is an amazing professor! I took his 8 week Humanities 1 course over the Summer and it was intensive, yet fun. He teaches very clearly. You really must keep up with the reading! He's very helpful too, so if you ever have a question, he's there to help you. :) Overall a great Professor!
He is an intelligent and helpful person, but he is a very tough grader. This class had three essays and a handful of in class quizzes which are based on the reading. The essays are based on difficult philosophical topics which pertain to the reading. Just remember, Professor Felder is not afraid to fail you. Do not underestimate this class.
Great professor, got my first B in cc in this class but still don't regret taking it. There isn't a ton of work so your grade mainly depends on 3 essays. He is there to help you out and he'll guid you through it. He genuinely makes you interested in the subjects and explains things clearly, overall a great experience.
DO THE READINGS...this class is TOUGH but I still enjoy going to class. He is so helpful but his exams and essays are killer! He makes you feel a bit timid about asking him questions but how can I not? I need help, the material is so tough.
LOVE this class! In having a hard time with it but I'm really enjoying learning everything. He is really willing to answer questions and really tries to relate to us. Not doing the readings will lead to the death of your A grade though so don't slack!
Great teacher, really nice&enthusiastic but overall VERY DIFFICULT. Classes are interesting but so tough. However he is reasonable&will help you out if you ask. Exam was rough but he wasnt as tough of a grader as I thought. Just make sure to know the concepts and how to apply them to the readings. NOT an easy A. I'm hoping for a B but expecting a C
AMAZING professor! Very passionate about his work, funny, kind and makes the material very interresting. ALOT of reading in this class (6 hrs a week) and if you miss one lecture it screws you for future exams. This class is VERY VERY hard.
Dr.Felder is still my favorite professor at IVC. This was NOT an easy A, if you dont want to do the reading dont take this class, if you want a passionate teacher that helps you explore analyzing literature this is the instructor for you. I have a new outlook on life after this class. The readings were interesting and difficult which made me better
Goodness. This class is very very hard! You need to take serious notes write down EVERYTHING he says. This is a class that opens your mind but difficult material. He's extremely intelligent and passionate. Will gladly help you with what he can. Study guides were given because we asked(trust me, they're essential). Tests are hard, but curves alot.
I love what we studied and still found it incredibly difficult.
Fantastic teacher! He's so insightful, very clear, completely genius, and gives excellent advice and help on papers if you take them to him.
Felder is a very interesting professor, very intelligent, and very clear. I'll say this; when he is giving his interpretation of a subject or reading during lecture, take notes. Regurgitate his views, and you'll have an A. A very interesting Humanities class, and overall a great person to learn from.
Professor Felder is very passionate when he teaches! there is A lot of reading and he talks the entire class but he wont let you leave until you have understood. He loves helping his students especially with papers. he will have you in his office and help you as much as he can! great teacher and a easy grader!
I was so excited to take this class before it started, but it ended up being such a disappointment. Mythology is supposed to be a fun and engaging subject but Felder made it so boring. The class is mostly reading and opinion-based discussions of the reading. The papers assigned take an eternity. Nothing cool or fun about this class, bland & boring.
Just read the assigned readings and take notes of what you don't quite understand. He goes over them thoroughly and the books are pretty interesting to read about if you're into perspectives and such. No real tests other than the final, which is basically testing if you actually read the books. Pretty easy essay grader.
Good professor. Assigns lots of reading, though, but he keeps things interesting. A good chunk of the grade is participation, but I just paid attention and didn't speak up and got an 'A' for participation.
Great Professor, lots of reading but all relating to course work, gives good feedback on all 3 papers.
Wonderful man! You can tell he really cares for his students, I started slipping behind and ended up not doing so hot on one of the tests (I was getting As on all the others) and he pulled me aside to make sure I was doing ok and see if he could help. Really meant a lot. He's hilarious in class and make sure you participate!!
Great Professor! make sure to go to his office hours as much as you can. Final was worth 40% of the grade, but the study guide for it was the final. I ended up doing better on the final than the essays.
Homework consists of reading all the books assigned throughout the semester. Lectures are based off the readings and are helpful in understanding the topics that will be the essay prompts and on the final. The class is EXTREMELY BORING and I wouldn't take it again.
He is kind in general but his lectures are really boring and you won't really get much from them. He is so tough at grading essays and expects a lot. Don't expect him to pass you by few points.
Professor Felder is one of the few professors who actually cares about his students. He takes complex information and translates it into language that can be easily understood by his students. His lectures are very long however, if you attend lectures regularly, take notes, and ask questions, you will succeed in his class.
He is a good professor, but if you are lazy do not take this class.
Took it over the summer. The content he teaches is quite dense and complex, but he teaches it to you in a way that will help you understand it. His lectures are long, but everything he says is absolutely crucial to take notes on and study for the essays/exams, so go to class!!! Or else you'll fall behind/get lost. I'd say his grading is moderate.
Felder is one of my favorite profs I've ever had. He's knowledgeable, passionate, and personable. Go to his office hours to get A's on essays. The readings he assigns can use difficult language, so make sure you ask about things you don't get. If you want an easy A, don't take him. If you want personal growth and insight, definitely take him.
If you want an easy A, do not take this course. You need to invest a lot of time into this class. It requires a lot of hours spent reading. Attendance is apart of your participation points, so if you do not show up then do not bother enrolling in this course. Felder is an awesome professor and has a lot to say about what he is teaching.
Professor Felder was great! I really enjoyed his lectures and he was a super great person/teacher. The class is basically reading 6 books and than 3 exams and 2 essays. Attendance is not mandatory but fairly mandatory to understand and pass the class! Take his class for HUM 1 I loved it!
Felder is a truly amazing professor. If you go to office hours he is happy to help you out. There is quite a bit of reading and if you cannot stand psychology/philosophy I would not recommend this class. It is not an easy A, but if you put in the work he will recognize that and you'll do fine. Make sure to go class and pay attention to lectures.
For someone who has no interest in humanities, his lectures are LONG and circular. The class was unstructured: do the reading and then the next class is just you asking him anything. He won't tell you the important things you need to know. The small participation grade got me my A so definitely go to class and just ask ANY ?'s to get credit.
Decent professor. Class is only lectures. 3 Tests, two papers. He is a fair grader on the essays and gives good feedback. Gives study guides full of content, but only puts about 5-10 questions from it on the test. Read, go to class, and use his study guides and you should be fine. I just wish he graded on more than just tests and essays.
As a philosophy student, I really enjoyed going to this class. I loved the lectures. The class examines complex subjects but if you are into philosophy or psychology you will learn a lot. Professor Felder is there for you, but will certainly challenge you with the material, as it is an honors class.
Felder is truly an amazing teacher. His class is therapeutic and welcoming, and his material is challenging and insightful. You will have to work for an A, but it is achievable if you take good notes and can write proficiently. Good vibes from this guy, highly recommend if you want to learn.
This class was seriously difficult. It's not an easy honors course at all. I spent so much time on the essays and listening to the lectures over and over again to fully understand the material. I did, however, get a great grade in the class, just be prepared to spend a lot of time. You're graded on three essays and a comprehensive final. That's it.
I took his summer class and it was okay, I leaned a lot but the class was just essentially reading the textbook. He says hes tests on and you will fail if you dont watch the lectures, documentaries, or read the additional material. But I only read the text book (And took notes on it) and did well. Not a bad choice, just be ready to read.
Took summer history online, clear grading criteria, lots of supporting material, graded like an English/history hybrid. tests are reflection essays. easy grader but you have to read the material and must be good with reading comprehension/good at essays. book does not reflect white American history in a flattering light i enjoyed that perspective
This honors class was one of the hardest I've taken at IVC. Felder is a great guy, and a great teacher. But the grading system for his class is a little strange. The entire class is based off of 3 papers, a midterm and final giving each assignment a weight of about 20% of your grade. The material is hard and his lectures are not easy to follow.
Felder himself is a great guy and is very passionate about what he teaches. If you're not majoring/interested in the areas of Humanities and are looking for Honors courses to complete in order to maintain Honors status at IVC do not make the same mistake I did and take this class. Find a class that is not based on 100 points.
He's a real gem in lecture, I took him for both HUM&Hist21 keeps you really intrigued with concepts! They can be hard to grasp but he is very helpful during office hours and doesn't shame you. HUM is not my intended major, I started out the semester shakey (didn't attend office hours) though at the end was throughly grasping the class.
The final exam makes you feel like all the papers that you put your time and effort into went in the trash. I felt like the final exam made or break your grade. This class only consists of 3 papers and 2 tests. So there isn't room to fail. If you fail the final exam your grade is going to tank from 6-10 percent of your grade. Don't recommend it.
I was surprised by the complexity of the content. Interesting concepts that are applicable to life. There are four essays and a final exam. He also grades the first two fairly easily. But that doesnt mean you dont need to put a lot of effort in! He is a very caring professor with great lectures. Tips: Read material and participate!!!
Took both his introduction courses for humanities and cultural studies. This course was lecture heavy and if you aren't a fan of reading in general, you need to stay away from him and these courses. However, he is an easy going professor that doesn't ask for much outside of doing what needs to be done. Course is mostly 4-5 papers and a final exam.
The course was very unorganized and offered absolutely zero learning experiences. Dont take this class if you actually want to learn and broaden your knowledge.
If this is not your major class, please stay away from him. This is definitely not an easy class to get A. The class is very very difficult. Taking this class will only waste your time and money. All in all, if this is not your major class, please stay away from him!
I took him last semester. The material was pretty difficult; I found myself rereading his books and rewatching lectures due to the content. Overall, nice guy
This is definitely not a class where you can get A with hard work. I try my best to complete all the homework and exams. But his scoring standards are very strange. I dont know why I lost my credit. He doesnt give any feedback every time he scores. If this is not your major class, please stay away from him.
Professor Felder is amazing! A lot of the material given can be challenging, but if you have a decent background in literature you'll be okay! His lectures are VERY informational. He isn't too tough of a grader. As long as you READ and take time to comprehend these intricate concepts you'll pass AND understand unforgettable new perspectives.
He was a nice person but in general, I was so confused half of the time lmao. We had three essays, a midterm, and a final exam, and that's all we were graded on. I did not do well on the first essay and that made bringing my grade up difficult. As a person I liked him but I definitely struggled in his class.
I've taken every course offered by Professor Felder. I hope he has other courses in development! You should have no problem getting a good grade if you keep up with the readings and complete the assignments. I found Dr. Felder to be an excellent professor. Marc Hanson
He's an amazing professor. He is more than happy to discuss material or assigned papers after class or during office hours and really helped me out. He clearly cares about his students and their success. While he doesn't give the most feedback, he will if you ask him to go over the rubric and meet up with him. One of the best professors at IVC.
Every exam requires an essay, and without feedback, you don't even know how to improve.
I am not going to lie, the material is REALLY hard, but he cares a lot about understanding the material and doing very well on the exams. He goes over it multiple times with multiple examples as well as encourage you to come to his office hours. one downside is that the feedback he gives back on exams and papers isn't the best.
Dr Steve Felder did a great job at making things simple but a good challenge. I took him for my mythology course and his lectures were amazing! He seems very passionate about his work. Its like four major essays but as long as you attempt to understand the course and try your best he will accept it. He does require college level writing.
Although this was all 100% online for me, the lectures he recorded were super informative, interesting, and helpful. He even has notes on all the readings and lectures we do that are equally helpful and you could get away with not having to read EVERYTHING. Encourages critical thinking and grades well if he sees an effort to understanding the texts
As long as you put in the hard work, this class is super manageable. Professor Felder is beyond kind and always does his best to answer any questions you may have. I 100% recommend either emailing him or going to his office hours to review your papers before submitting them, I promise it will help a ton!
This is a very insightful class with concepts that challenge how you think. Every book assigned taught me something. The concepts are hard to understand on your own, but he provides lectures that explain everything. Your grade is based on essays. For me, it was hard to put the concepts into words, but with a lot of effort, I did well in the class.
Professor Felder is one of the best teachers I have had in IVC. I learned so many new things even though the class was in the summer. If you like to learn, read and write papers definitely take him.
I think he's the best, the staff is hard but fun, just go participate in the class you will get a good grade!
This class should be in person to exchange ideas. The course work is complicated and Felder makes it harder with his free form lectures on obscure readings, no clear talking points or concepts. A discussion every week with no clear prompt. This is a hard class for a general humanities class. There are 2 exams worth 40% ea 10 essay questions!
I am a classics major so this is what I am passionate about, I love Professor Felder, I think his lectures are easy to understand but full of helpful information and I adore his understanding of Greek history and literature. All that being said do not take this class if you're not passionate about Greek or Roman literature, theres lots of reading!
It was a hard experience, but a very fulfilling one. Initially, I thought it was a discussion based class with an emphasis on philosophy, but soon learned it was filled with all sorts of novels. Professor Felder is a very passionate teacher, but the class is hard if you're not that invested into the material. If you're willing to read, it's great.
I would not take Felder again, take notes on his lectures as you need them for the midterm and final (10 essay questions ea). There are so many readings, chose carefully based on his lectures. The last lecture he said would be in the exam and then it wasn't, waste of time! His long lectures are from 2021, this is not an easy class, easy grader.
The class is self paced so it is up to you to watch each lecture all the way through, which I recommend because he does let you know any information that will help you for essays/exams. Other than the readings there is no true homework submitted, the class grade is solely based off 3 essays, 1 midterm and then a final exam. Highly recommend !!
he shares so much about his personal life i love him so much. probably the smartest guy on the campus
Dr. Felder was an amazing teacher and absolutely brilliant to listen to. He is obviously very passionate about the topics he teaches can be very philosophical and mind-opening if you take the time to indulge. He is a difficult class, get ready to read, and I mean like 5-6 book and his lectures do range from 20min-3hrs total depending on the topic.
I went into this class not really sure to expect but it was honestly one of the best classes I've taken at IVC. You take away alot personally from the class. His materials are posted in-depth on canvas, which greatly helped me get an A on the papers as the prompts are basically answered with his provided canvas material. Would take again.
PROFESSOR FELDER IS THE GOAT!! One of the best professors at IVC, is super caring and seriously so smart. Take this class!! Even if you think it's hard or don't agree with everything, it's still super eye opening. Also, attend office hours or ask questions after class, he is willing to work with you or answer any questions.
Simply amazing. One of the best professors I have had the opportunity to be taught by. If this class is open please take it, it is literally life changing. Classes are lecture heavy and the topics are a confusing. If you ask questions in class and get everything cleared up it is so rewarding. Passionate and caring, TAKE HIS CLASS!
Even though many times during this class i really regretted taking this for my GE and wished i had done intro to comms instead, at the end i feel like ive learned so much about this course, like humanities in a nutshell, and although it was a good amount of work and time spent on this class compared to my other classes, it was invaluable info.
I originally thought I would hate this class, however, Professor Felder made it super interesting and did a good job keeping us engaged. There were two papers, a midterm, and a final exam; there were also a few pop quizzes scattered throughout the semester. As long as you do the readings you'll do fine. Prof really cares about his students!
2nd time taking prof felder's hum 1h class. there are a lot of readings to keep up with, but not that many assignments which gave me room to really engage with the content. 2 exams, 2 paper, and a few pop quizzes. passionate, devoted, and extremely wise. take him, I learned a lot this semester.
Professor Felder is kind and extremely knowledgeable. I recommend talking to him outside of class because his insight & advice is eye-opening. There's a lot of required reading, but his lectures are thorough and helped me understand all the difficult concepts. Perfect class for an introvert because there's no group work/discussions, just lectures.
Had the pleasure to take Dr. Felder's class this semester. His lectures are long and you need to really focus. It was very challenging for me at first, but it gets easier towards the end. He's an easy grader, as long as you show that you understand the material, you should be fine. He is very smart and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed this class.
I took Professor Felder for hum1H and he is an outstanding professor. His lectures are very informative and genuinely cover a lot of different topics that provided a new outlook on the way we look at various perspectives of life. This class although great, it is very time consuming and has tons of reading. This is not an easy honors course.
Professor Felder's HUM1H is a challenging yet rewarding class. The lectures are engaging, and engaging with the content really pays off. Unstuck study was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Definitely take this class if you want to learn a lot.
VERY lecture heavy and u are graded by only 2 exams and an essay and maybe a few pop quizzes. if u get a C on one of these, getting an A is likely impossible. other than that, not a lot of work in class. very calm. just study alot. go to office hours for essay help to ensure u get an A on it....ask lots of questions and clarification for this
Out of the classes I have taken at IVC, this has been the most memorable. Professor Felder knows how to lead his class by allowing students to participate in discussions and providing feedback. The required readings/movies are exciting, especially the unit about Lacan. He provides revisions/tips for essays before submission. Would 100% take again.
I loveddd this class and although Felder's lecture are hard to follow and sometimes complicated I recommend transcribing the lectures and turning them into notes. The tests are fair just make sure you review the test reviews as they really do cover whats gonna be on the tests. He is nice and will answer any questions & make sure to show up to class
If u need to take a class take it with Prof Felder, he's actually a G, super understanding and really nice, you just have to pay a little attention to the lectures which are actually pretty interesting. Tests he gives a lot of leniency and are based a little on the lectures. If u need to take humanities take it with Prof Felder, hes the best.
something about phallus
I took his class during summer 2025, and it was really good. First, get ready to read and watch all videos that he lectured about it. Second, you will do assigment for each lecture , but just write like a parapgraph so it should be fine, just one essay for the last final exam. around 1800words. easy grader. I would love to take him again.
Took this class during summer for GE credit. Workload is quite heavy as you have to watch his lecture videos and read any material assigned for the week. That being said, he's pretty good at teaching some of the more abstract concepts using analogies or comparisons to popular media. Would not recommend for GE but still a good professor nonetheless.
