He tries to act nice but he's really moody. It's possible to get an A if you study for tests.
I felt Foster was pretty laid back but has a hard on for math. his lectures were really interesting but sometimes hed have childish responses. i was pleased with his teaching. Easy grader.if i needed to take college algebra or calc i would sure take him.
He really knows what he is doing and truely teaches you math. He doesn't just shove a formula in your face he shows you how to get it and doesn't move on untill you understand. He's funny too.
He is a fabulous teacher! Kind of a hippie maybe? Really tries to help everyone understand, and you will as long as you go to class
great math teacher, pretty straightforward
i would take another class with them if i could- he is very willling to help you with anything and everything. his office hours are helpful. he's clear in class which makes the course easy to understand- definately recommended~
Very enthusiastic about math and wanting his students to succeed. i struggled a lot and he was always there for me whenever i needed help. very reliable and dedicated to his work and students. i highly recommend him.
he's a little weird but awesome. explains things really well and if you need it explained again he doesn't mine doing it. he does have a tendency to sound like he's yelling a lot but it's just the way he speaks.
Great teacher. He was a little weird sometimes but he was able to teach me math and trig that I wasn't able to understand before. He is very enthusiastic about his job and will always help a student in need. Good guy overall.
Great teacher, one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He explaines things very well and is very helpful. It's easy to get a good grade from him as long as you do the work and understand everything for the exams.
he is the best teacher i have ever had. before i took his class, i hated and sucked at math. now i am a genius. he explains perfectly that you cant help but understand. he is alo really nice. just talk to him and he will help you out. Go FOSTER!!!!!
He is one of the best math teacher in the University. He is a hard professor, does not and will not give out A s and curve the class. However, he is a great explainer and very helpful during office hours. He is a nice person to talk to. But just be sure you attend class and study hard for his exams.
best teacher ive had at arizona yet
If you have to take calculus I'd suggest taking it with Steve. He's really helpful during office hours and understanding as long as you show up to class and do your work. He sometimes goes on tangents about the chaos of the universe or something. He seems pretty passionate about math.
I don't know if all the people who have given this guy are on crack, but this dude is a joke. I got a a in 115a while barley picking up a pencil. My math group meets for about 20 hours a week and i am barely going to get a c. His "flavor" of teaching is, well, in his words, "not ok." Avoid this guy...
Even though this is only my first semester here at U of A I have taken other college courses, and he is one of the best professors I've ever had. Especially good for Calc I because the first time I took it was in high school and it was rough. This time around was much easier both because I had a general idea of everything and a better teacher.
Very helpful. If he tought high math classes, I would take every one with him.
I give him high marks. The class is not fun or easy but Foster does a good job of explaining concepts and doesn't speed through material. RECOMMENDATIONS: Buy the book. It is a good substitute for notes. Also, do all the homeworks and understand them if you plan on getting good grades on quizzes and especially the tests which are pretty tough.
I hated this class! Foster is very strict and horrible at lecturing. My math group and I had to meet at least once a week for an hour or two. So much work. If you miss class it is hard to catch up because there is no actual textbook, just a powerpoint presentation which is useless. If you HAVE to take this class then take it from a different prof!
Foster is a pretty good guy. Tests were pretty hard, but he's very helpful if you need it. He's known to say things like, "It's subtle folks", "Bona fide number", "Flavor", "Fudge factor", and "Doh!". This can make him funny at times. I would take another class taught by Foster.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TEACHER! Do not take him! He is so rude, hard to talk to, HORRIBLE at lectures and grades really really hard! HE REFUSES TO CURVE THE CLASS FOR ANY REASON! his exam are really hard! I am a senior at the UA and have never failed a class before but he failed me. I worked so hard in this class, went to class & did all the hw & failed
Nice Dead Head of a guy. Good teacher.
Difficult to talk to. Extremely difficult exams. His lectures are crystal and his exams are based on his notes, but the exams are more tricky and developed. It is like he teaches you how cook eggs for a month, and then he suddenly gives a chicken and expect you to cook it in 50 minutes. Don't be fooled by the good comments here because I was!! :(
He is very intelligent. He doesn't require you to attend class but his exams are based directly on class notes so I would recommend going. It is true you will learn calculus taking this class but if you plan on passing the final I would suggest another teacher. Foster does NOT prepare you for the final by any means! Just a warning..
He is a great guy, and very easy to understand, he clearly answers all your questions and if you see him during office hours he can be very helpful! He is rather slow in his teaching, which may irritate some students, but I enjoy being taught at a slower pace, as he goes through each and every detail of a problem until it is understood
Honestly a horrible teacher. His explanations are unclear and unable to understand questions that are asked. He also frequently makes mistakes when doing long problems on the board. Worst of all, one of the slowest graders I've had. Seems to not care about getting crucial grades out in any rush. Other classes get their grades 2 weeks prior to you.
Probably the worst business math teacher available. The way he talks makes it impossible to understand anything. The class in general is pretty difficult, but I think they curve at the end. Do all of the online quizzed and homeworks with a group.
Is a horrible teacher only grades online are your three tests. Very difficult to talk to. Other professors were better at helping me in the La Paz lab. If you get him get another professor as I have friends who took math 115A with another professor and they looked at the questions he asked and were confused at what he was trying to ask.
It's not his fault he is teaching probably the easiest of classes at the university to a bunch of idiotic business freshman who are probably the stupidest group of people i have ever been in a class with. The only reason i disliked him as a lecturer was because he has to talk like the class is full of idiots..which it is...]Much better one on one
Based on this site, he's a great teacher for anything but business math. I'm in his Math 120R class and it's better than any math I took in high school. Lots of homework but he's very clear and doesn't move too fast. He talks funny sometimes but you get used to it.
Overall, good teacher. Explained Calc I extremely well. Homework was a bit much, but helped prepare you for exams. The exams were average difficulty, and overall not to hard of a class IMO.
This is an easy calc class. Foster teaches at a reasonable pace, but you must get used to how he says certain things. TESTS ARE EASY IF YOU HAVE A DECENT UNDERSTANDING OF THE TOPICS! He will answer any question that you have within class and outside of class. He truly cares about his students.
He explains everything he is doing and writes very clear and organized notes on the board. The tests are fair and he makes sure you are prepared for them. He can take awhile to grade hw and tests.
He gives great notes but his tests are made to trick you. Tests are too hard in my opinion. But he is very willing to help and is super funny. Lots of homework but it better prepares you. Overall I would recommend him compared to other UA math proffs
He is super confusing! I would have an F in this class if I didn't go to tutoring in the La Paz Lab. However, he is a nice guy and is pretty understanding. There's online quizzes and homeworks basically every week. Tests are hard. But you don't have to do project quizzes which other classes have so thats good. Overall: Outside tutoring is a must!
He explains things pretty clearly. It is a difficult class but he doesn't mind helping you in office hours at all, I think it is better to go in to show you care about your grade and he might bump you up. Difficult class but foster makes it a little bit easier as long as you put in the work.
He goes at a nice easy pace for everyone in the class to keep up with. He cares about people doing well so show some interest and he'll help you.
He is very nice and corny. If you take notes and attend every class, you may get a B. It takes a little more effort than usual to get an A in this class. He is very helpful and offers office hours or tutoring every week.
If you're into wizardry you're in for a treat. An A or B is very possible just gotta work for it. He's Very helpful and the material isn't bad at all. He's hella smart, my friends and I joke and call him a wizard b/c of it. Have those IQs almost every week, Have indiv hws due almost every week. Two tests, two projects tests, and a final, good luck!
I don't care how intelligent he is, all what I care that he explains the stuff. I took calc before and id I didn't take it I will not understand much. He explains things different than my math lab which might be confusing. He assigns a lot of HW at my math lab 6/week and one written/week.
A wizard, in every sense of the word. Explains with such clarity and depth, and eager to help in office hours. You can only fail this class if you fail to do your "due diligence".
This teacher made me enjoy math again. Honestly one of the best professors I have ever had just because he can so clearly communicate concepts so that you understand them when you are confused. Office hours are especially helpful. He really puts thought and effort into his lesson plans.
Tough class. a lot of material is covered esp. exam #2. but I spent a lot of time at ThinkTank and office hours and ended with a B. very knowledgeable professor however do not take this course with this professor if you are not willing to work and earn the grade you receive. definitely not an easy A
This class is easy if you have taken calc before, but if not, be prepared to work regardless of the professor. Steve is great. He keeps the class interesting and answers questions and emails efficiently. He is helpful at office hours and really cares about his students. One downside is other professors hold review sessions, but I still like Steve.
Foster is one of the best math teachers I have ever had! After not taking math my senior year he made me realize why I love it again. He teaches at a pretty easy pace and gives really good notes. I personally think that if you put in a good effort, you will get an A. Review all of the problems he does in class for notes and the tests are easy!
His lectures are great. he goes through the information pretty quickly so its worth it to take notes. He doesn't go over the stuff you learned in pre-calc in great detail he more focuses on the small details that tend to confuse people. He explains everything really well and fills in any gaps you might have from previous math classes.
He's honestly my favorite math teacher at the UA. He is very good at conveying difficult concepts and is a great lecturer
Lots of homework. But he was very clear about description of math stuff. Willing to help you in office hours or email. Tough tests.
Honestly, the best math teacher. Foster is so knowledgeable and excited to teach.
A decent 122A prof in the Math dept here is pretty rare but this guy is truly one of the best. He's quirky and reminds me of a wizard, but he really keeps everyone engaged in the lesson and he is ALWAYS willing to help or clear things up. Very nice, clear teaching, and is not a nazi when it comes to grading hw. Gives full credit 99% of the time.
For 122A he's a really straight forward guy. He'll teach the material as best as he can (which is pretty well) and asks if we have questions. Always wants to make sure that we have none and get the material. Only homework was webassign and like 3 written homework. Easy A.
Tremendously enjoyable! Math teachers vary greatly - Steven is top notch. Lectures and examples are so well laid-out. Always there for extra questions. Very patient too! One of the best math teachers I have ever had. Class zips by time-wise. Passionate and knowledgeable - explains difficult problems without being condescending. Would take again.
Foster is very goofy but he is the best Math professor at the U of A. He gives many example in class and breaks things down so they are easy to understand.
Mr. Foster is an amazing math professor, probably the best one that I've ever had. He explains the concepts clearly and breaks it down so that it is really easy to understand. He always takes questions and is never condescending. Webassign is due almost every night but is easily doable. Written homework is due every other week from D2L worksheets .
Mr. Foster is great. Answers questions well, cares about his students, and just wants us all to pass. Definitely would recommend. You won't get a better teacher.
Amazing math teacher. Really clear examples and explanations. The way he talks is so funny, but I don't think he knows he's being funny, which made the class really enjoyable to go to every day. Occasionally had short, easy quizzes. Go to class and do the homework and you should be fine.
A hard class with a great professor. His very patient and is always willing to answer your questions regardless of how silly they might be. Answers emails effectively. But assigns a lot of hard online homework via WebAssign, which really made me frustrated. You will find the exams to be much easier though.
Awesome instructor ! The material isnt too difficult a great refresher before actually taking calc, go to the classes each day, do the homework online, and ask questions and youll do fine ! Textbook is provided online for free through d2L
Very difficult class and the grading rubric doesn't help your grade at all. If you test well, this is a good class to take.
The most amazing math professor at U of A. Genuinely cares for his students and always answers your questions, no matter how silly. Definitely recommend him for such a difficult topic!
This is by far the best math class I've taken in my LIFE! He makes the information clear and writes notes down in a way that makes sense. First, giving general information about problems, easy examples, then slowly working up to harder examples. This class is simple, as long as you stay on top of your work, and take notes, you'll pass!
The class is calculus for business. He a really good teacher and does well explaining every concept to the class. I definitely would take it again with him.
Honestly professor Foster is great, he is hilarious and his lectures are clear. He provides many examples and forms for each question. He is extremely open to questions BUT if you are not great at testing I advice you to not take this class. You will have a quiz at least once a week, not including 4 major exams.
An outstanding math teacher. Took him for calculus and he made it extremely easy. Gave good help when asked and was very effective in getting information across. Has weird voice volume patterns but you get used to it. Any bad reviews are from people who suck at math and dont want to blame it on themselves. Just pay attention. Passed with a 95%
He is a horrible teacher. For many many lectures, he would constantly mess up on the problems he did and just scratch it out not explaining anything afterward. THe notes you take are nothing similar to the homework assignments, quizzes, or tests.
If you got to class you will do great. Great lectures and easy to listen too. Tests are a majority of the grade, not much HW and very flexible. Provides lots of examples of each problems so you won't be surprised on the test.
Material was tough as it is calculus but the teacher was alright. He rarely used textbook and his lecture notes differed. He is often hard to follow, answers questions, has office hours, no extra credit, records lessons, great personality, lots of hw and exams were hard. If you are good at math recommend him, if not and struggle choose diff prof.
Amazing teacher!! Super nice and always super helpful inside and outside of class. Made it really easy to learn calculus. Would definitely recommend.
He was the course coordinator for math 116 so all the exams were very straightforward. He would tell you exactly what to study for each exam. He told some corny jokes during class which made it not so boring.
Professor does not explain example questions well, he skips many steps. If you have questions for him after class he will give you attitude, he will not put in extra time unless you really beg him to help you.
Steve is a really cool guy and was always helpful during office hours. Personally, going to lectures did not benefit me, but I had to go since attendance is mandatory. Based on this University's math department, Steve is probably as good as it gets.
Mr. Foster is a light in the darkness that is the University of Arizona math department. He writes the final exam for 116 which he prepares you great. His office hours are very helpful. The class tests are heavy. I suck at tests and still got an A. just put in the time. Homework is very easy, all online. Overall great guy, shoutout mr foster.
Steve teaches well but you will need help outside of class due to the hard content. The first section of calc 2 will kick your butt but then it gets better. Screw integrals.
Steve is a fantastic professor for Calc 2. His lectures were explained well and his office hours were incredibly useful. Lots of visualization involved with graphs, shapes, and some physics, but overall, Steve taught the class well. Weekly group/individual quizzes, daily group activity, 2-3 weekly homework assignments, and 4 heavily weighted exams.
Overall, not a bad teacher. However, the lectures felt rushed and Steve wasn't the best at explaining. I would definitely recommend going to the test review sessions before the exams. There was a decent amount of homework but it wasn't bad.
Steve is a great guy. The class I was in was one of those 100+ people classes, so there's multiple professors. Steve's hilarious and wants you to succeed in Calc 2 in my case. It's a very difficult class, but at least Steve is there to make it entertaining! But yeah, the only reason he gets a difficulty of 4 is just because the course is difficult.
I was not a huge fan of the class set up, but the professor himself was okay. There were several quizzes and a fair amount of homework to keep up with. As long as you attend the lectures, get help when you need it, do the homework and study well, you should be fine. The TA tutoring sessions are very helpful.
Steve is awesome. He is definitely the best math professor you will come across here. He is super animated and friendly. He is a really down to Earth guy and is super honest. 10/10 would recommend.
I absolutely love Steve. He makes a tough class a lot more enjoyable. With his personality and his excitement for math, he makes MATH129 much easier. Show up to class and stay up to date with all of the assignments!! The class is definitely a lot, but nothing unmanageable. Reach out to your TA's! They are super helpful.
Go to class everyday. Do not skip this class. If you skip you will have no idea what is going on and could miss a section entirely. The lectures go a little fast and can be confusing at times. There is a participation grade at the end of every class. There are TLAs walking around throughout class so there are many opportunities to ask questions.
The professor is great and funny honestly, and his tests are a bit harder than other professors who teach MATH 129.
Professor is extremely boring and has no personality. talks mono tone voice all class long as a lecture for 1 hour and has no individual help. Test and quiz's are much different than the study guides. if you have the correct answer but don't show every bit of work he gives less than 50% credit for the entire question. I recommend to stay away.
Foster was surviveable. He would go through a few examples and rarely expand much so you had to rely on paying attention to tons of Aleks homework lessons typically. Regardless of the professor, 112 has the same amount of work + exams. He was boring & most of class would be for us to "work out problems" that nobody understood. EXAMS MATTER ALOT
Speaks way too fast and is inconsistent with what he says vs what is presented on the board. Does not care about students either.
While taking this class I really enjoyed the professor and his passion for math. He hardly makes any mistakes during lectures which makes learning the material less confusing than other math teachers. All needed material for the course is provided and as long as you show up to class and do the practice exams for each exam the class is very doable.
He's a funny and nice guy. Teaches very slowly, but clearly. Some might find it boring but it was great for me because I was able to understand everything. Nice and helpful too. He put my 89.65% in as an A also.
Proffesor foster is very much a stickler for grading; however, if you follow all of his grading requirements on his syllabus, you can pass this class with a B or higher. He assigns homework every week, and there are three major exams you have to study for. They will make or break your grade. He is a very nice and funny professor overall.
the way he speaks does not make sense. he sounds like a sim. his lectures dont match anything that is on exams, homework, etc. the TA's dont even know how to solve half of the problems.
Dont take his class
Foster has a rather slow teaching style that felt like a drag and took me a while to adapt to; but he's great if that's what you prefer. The midterms are not hard at all because they are almost exactly like the 4 practice exams that he provides. As long as you study and go to class, you'll do fine.
This professor does not know how to teach. He teaches in a way that makes it hard to learn the material. Where and how to do some homework assignments is not clear. Only feedback is on tests and quizzes. If you do, for some reason, decide to take this class, good luck on the tests!
I'm already bad at math and he made it even more difficult to learn. He would even do problems wrong when teaching and get corrected by students. Take this class with someone else.
