THIS TEACHER ROCKS! HE'S REALLY DOWN TO EARTH AND EASY GOING. HE'S LIKE ONE OF THE STUDENTS, VERY APPROACHABLE!
This prof is amazing, definitly take a class with him. Its interesting, funny, entertaining and educational, also the class( traditional and popular culture) will open u'r eyes on a lot of things.
Really helpful prof
Steve, you're a great professor, but what the heck is up with the four chapter summaries on top of the really difficult Williams, Habermas, and Dorfman reading questions (which we didn't actually go over in lecture)? Since we are going to have our quiz on Tuesday, I hope you give us 3 or more questions instead of two, so that we have more choice.
Prof Steve is the best prof ever. He is helpfull, understanding and he will always be available for help. Some readings are not easy at all but he tries to give summaries to help us more. Even though sometimes we may feel lost he will try his best to make us understand the lecture. Way to go, keep up the great work!!!
We need more professors like him, he clearly enjoys what he does--always in a good mood
Professor Steve is awesome. I actually enjoyed his class even though it was twice a week for 4 hours. He is a very good prof and goes out of his way to spoon feed the material to his students. There is no hidden agenda in this course. It's straight forward though at times the critical theorists get dull. Professor steve will break down concepts
Prof Steve is going to say how it is. For those who expect an amazing mark for just breathing, think again! School involves work and even though he may challenge you, it doesn't mean hes a hard marker. Its University level ppl!!! Talk to him, hes very approachable, and even when I didn't get what I wanted I walked away from him happy. Peace.
This is a good course and has some interesting content. The Prof is good but he is not a great lecturer and is not very good at explaining some of the more difficult concepts. Definately try and get into Sarah's tutorial, she makes the course worth while (and she is super attractive).
Pretty cool until he screws you over with a****ty essay mark
last time I checked, it was laziness and poor writing that got students poor marks. I got an A+ in Prof. Steve's course- but I worked my butt off for it. He doesnt give marks away for free- and I like that. It makes my grade worth something. Stop crying and start reading and you'd get a better mark.
He's a pretty good TA...he goes over things in depth and he is willing to help people...He's also very funny so it lightens the mood and makes it easier to learn
Amazing proff! I have been going to York for three years and this is the first proper university class I have come across. Many other subjects and theories were drawn in forcing students to develop a more critical eye. Younger less experienced students who failed to question things in the beginning came out more critical thinkers. Amazing Prof.
his classes are amazing but mind u he isnt an easy marker be careful ven da essays head towards u
WORLDS OF CHILDHOOD: TA WAS A VERY VERY VERY HARD MARKER!. TOWARDS THE BEGINNING, I FOUND HIS TUTORIALS WERE USELESS B/C IT DIDNT COMPLIMENT THE LECTURE.. OVERALL HE IS A VERY HARD MARKER!!!
hard marker but very cool. classes were always interesting. easy to talk to and very approachable. would take his course again.
steve is an amazing tutor. if you follow his rubrics, you'll be okay. he's a great person. he'll fight for you if you've been treated unfairly. he's always prepared for the tutorials. as steve told us: "work hard, learn and seek help from the right places" and you'll be ok. go steve! oh yeah, and keep up with that (boring) foundations book.
Steve is mad cool. He has the best jokes and he inspires you to go the extra mile. The readings are tough but he really shows you how to break it down. GO STEVE!!
A joke. A complete and utter joke. Too busy being funny to keep up with the material he should be teaching.
A great TA :D and i'm not just saying this caz he told me to during a tutorial XD Steve is outgoing and can even be crazy but he makes it worthwhile by waking u up -it's university so u have to work hard if you want a good mark :) p.s. i learned not to procastinate XD :D
Would rather be liked than good.
Amazing professor that is really interested in what his students have to say. Has thought provoking lectures and knows how to teach difficult material.
awful marker and a horrible person
Excellent TA!He definately knows what he is talking about. He has a great sense of humour and is very helpful. By far the best TA i've ever had:)
haha someone thinks hes an alien..wat a looser who ever wrote that..he is strict when it comes to marking but overall ok.
i dropped the course coz of steve..he will never help you so warning to students plz do not enroll in his tutorial!!
never helps!!!
I took the course last year and would say that you have to work your ass off to get a B in Steves class. Preferably enroll on Neils class as he is more approachable and an easy marker. Steve tends to discourage students in the middle of the semester and will tell you to drop the course. But I managed to survived with my hard work.
Excellent TA! Screw u ppl who think elsewise! He is a very smart TA who uses his great sense of humour so that you don't get bored in his tutorials. If it weren't for him, I would hate this course. Keep doing ur thing Steve and don't listen to these loosers!
So for my first year, and for one of my first TA'S.. steve was all right. He is not very good at e-mailing the responses you want. It is usually couple words like: ye, ok SG. But other wise he was approachable, and always kept us interested with funny remarks and how he uses his hands to talk a lot, in a creepy old man way hahahaha. No seriously he
i took the course last summer and he was my TA. tutorials are interesting but hes not clear on what he looks forward to in an assignment or an essay. People from my class always used to say neil is a better TA so i would say enroll in Neils class because steve has very high expectations when marking and would not give you a B.
ok if you take his class you will never end up with a B and would not be able to continue in children studies. he just has really high expectations of his students and class average is always a C. I agree with the people who commented before me about neil.
This course in general was a waste of time. Steve made it interesting, so what if
I duno why every one is talking down upon steve. He was my TA from fall through winter, and i learned a lot from his tutorial. I felt he was very helpful explaining assignments and course concepts. He is a very nice guy and knowledgable about the subject. I finsihed with an A in the course, so if you stay on top of the readings you'll be fine.
Too egoistic..would not accept your assignments even if they are 2 mins late..its a first year course not phd. Needs to be a bit lenient
Steve is a tough marker. He knows what he is talking about and has high expectations of students. In my opinion, best professor ever.
Wonderful professor, my fave so far at york. approachable, sincere, super super cute
Hardcore.
Great prof! Makes it all so interesting and relevant. Brings material to life.
Inspiring at times, course material connections are made through power point pictures. Very interesting course! Great prof!
Got my paper back today,I would say he's pretty fair but could be more lenient. After all,he was a student 2 once and who doesn't want to do good? every1 tries their best and he should consider what students are going through. I'm pretty sure he wants the best 4 his kids jus like our parents. If a student did a C+ paper he should just give them a B
We just got our first papers back the other day and not many people did well.. but in all honesty.. he might as well have written it for us the way he explained it so i do not think its his fault that people didnt understand.. ur awesome steve :) i love you as a TA and i love worlds of childhood, best decision i ever made !
His lectures are better then Cantons. They are clear and to the point. I can actually understand the concepts in the readings because of him. As a T.A he expects you to earn your grade. This is a great quality he is building in you. I love how he makes us discuss the material together- we gain a new perspective to the information by this.
Expects a lot from students, very passionate about his job. However, somewhat big-headed at times. Dont just assume he is giving you a bad mark and he is a hard marker, approach him about why you got the mark and he will try his best to help you understand where you lost your marks and how you can improve. Does care about students success.
one of the worst T.a i ve ever had
I took the course last year. Well I have to say that it changed my thinking in a lot of ways but Steve is awful, inconsiderate and rude. He would not raise a 69 to 70. Me and my friend worked together and she was with Neil and got a better grade so do your self a favor and enroll in Neils section.
i am a third year humanities student and took this course with steve as i wanted to minor in children studies. Steve is horrible and should not be allowed to teach to york. Just feels happy screwing up students marks. Need to fix his attitude and should be more approachable.
the purpose of this website is to help students. Well the only thing i would like to say is that if u want a descent grade in this course then dont enroll in this arrogant t.a's section. Prof. Canton is helpful though
great course but so far the worst t.a i ve ever had. Run away as far away from him as you can if you want a good grade in the course
made the course even harder than it actually was. He was so rude that a couple of my classmates even complained about him. DONT make a mistake by taking this course with him.
The course is amazing as it changes your approach towards childhood and the shoreham placements are great but Steve is one of the worst T.a's at york and should not be allowed to be teach. Puts a fake exterior on himself
The best prof who gives the best lectures. In terms of marking, he is a little harder, but if you put in the effort, you will do well. I believe he is hard to reach, since so many students book appointments with him, but I'm sure that you will benefit if you get to talk to him. Hard class, high expectations, but good prof nonetheless. You must work
the t.a is an utter nightmare, incomprehensible, inapproachable and too many unrealistic expectations. Extremely hard marker, stay away from him
he's okay
Steve is an awesome professor! He is intelligent, kind, respectful and fair. -from a non cyber bully. :)
So he is amazing with lectures and tutorials, really bad apperantly on explaining assignments. Got my assignment today as he was teaching Freier and guess what?! he never even gave the chance to talk what he should say is I want u to write your opinion but only what I want 2 read!!
very passionate about this subject. However, for someone who is all about freedom of speech, and Freire, he is ALWAYS right and knows more than you about childhood. Also, he is BITTER towards students and it shows. Steve, look at your comments CRITICALLY & REFLECT ON THEM. Instead of denying/flagging them, evalute your attitude &teaching style.
Dr. Gennaro is a great teacher. He teaches the subject with clarity and opened my eyes to a lot of interesting things. He may be a hard marker but he wants the students to do well and understand. I did hear from classmates though that he might not always be fair, but if you take the time to approach him, he will explain his "unfairness". GreatProf
When I read the unfavorable comments others have made, I wonder if they expect that he will somehow be an "easy" marker, because he is such a down to earth prof. It's unfortunate that some students have not been able to enjoy the thought provoking classes that he facilitates. I recommend his classes to people who seriously want to learn!!
WORST PROF EVER! He goes against everything he teaches! so hypocritical! He neat picks every little thing you write while preaching about being open minded in teaching. Avoid this class if you can. I got my lowest mark in this class out of my 4 years of university.
I especially liked the way this professor delivered the material. He is not mono-toned and seems very passionate and confident about what he is teaching. I found his lectures to be clear and thought-provoking. In the end, I received an excellent grade and I definitely wouldn't mind taking another course of his.
If you dont like this professor its becase you are an idiot. He is extremely smart and passionate about what he teaches. If you are an average student you will fail or drop out of the class. This is the only class I have ever attended at York in which I felt that I was in University.
The material he has you read is very difficult and hard to understand. Article which should take just over an hour to read takes a few hours due to lack of interest because you have no idea what the authora are writing about. His lectures are interesting but you need to understand the material in order to do good on his exams. Look at his text 1st.
THE READING MATERIAL IS PRETTY HARD FOR A FIRST YEAR COURSE. I AM A THIRD YEAR STUDENT AND STRUGGLE WITH THE READINGS. MY MAJOR IS LAW AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THOSE READINGS ARE EASIER THAN THIS. THIS IS TOO POLITICAL AND INVOLVES TOO MUCH HISTORY IF I WANTED TO LEARN ABOUT POLITICS AND HISTORY I WOULD OF TAKEN THOSE INSTEAD. THERE IS NO MEDIA.
Steve is by far the best prof I have ever had, at both York and Western. He is extremely passionate about what he is teaching, I love attending his lectures. The material covered is advanced for a first year class, but he does an excellent job explaining it and answering any questions. Steve inspires me to want to get involved!
Coolest Prof EVER
The best I've ever hard so far. Very smart and pays a keen interested to almost his every student to learn. And I like his style for upholding and maintaining a student-prof relationship.
Great professor, very clear and passionate about what he teaches. If he is your TA, make it your number one priority to do the readings otherwise he will make you sign off on a paper saying you didn't do them and that will adversely affect your tutorial grade which ended up being the difference between a B+ and an A for me.
What a great professor. Very interactive course, you will enjoy it. Take it with Gennaro!
He is by far one of the greatest professors ever. His lectures are the best. He is helpful, clear, and his anecdotes will be very useful during exam time. He is AWESOME!
Awesome Prof! I had him in 2 courses for my degree, he was great and supportive, and he really knows his stuff.
I appreciate a prof who tries to push their students to do their VERY best and that's Steve. HOWEVER, he is very insensitive and an extremely hard marker. I don't think hes very approachable, a bit too intense IMO. Good at giving lectures though, explaining the material with a lot of passion but sets unrealistic standards for his students
Great professor. He really cares about his students and is knowledgeable on the context he teaches, which makes it enjoyable to come to class and learn. I gained a lot from his class and would take it all over again if I could.
I had him for COMN 2700 last summer and I think he is a great Prof. He is a kind man too. Is willing to listen to students if they have any concern or problems. I cannot say the same for other Profs in this school.
Steve Gennaro has been my favorite prof at York. I found his classes interesting, informative, engaging and overall inspiring. Taking his communication class solidified my choice to become a communication major. I fell in love with the material. I wouldn't call the class easy, but do your work, you'll pass. STEVE PLEASE TEACH MORE COMN CLASSES!!!!
I have taken 2 fourth year classes with him online, and although I really like his lecture videos, I would've liked to see more. HUMA 4142 had absolutely no lectures, we just had to read and post in the forum, along w some essays. Would've liked some more engagement from him he was kind of MIA. Very accessible, on campus, on the phone, and on Skype
Had him for my summer class for a 2nd yr COMN course. He was amazing! Very friendly and funny and made lecture interesting. Gave good examples which helped. Quiz every week and 4 big tests but if you do the readings and show up for lecture then you will get a good grade! Sometimes MIA but he was available outside of class. Fave prof so far!!
The course required very little to read but he was a tough grader. Also one thing I didn't respect was that he did not give me great feedback on an assignment. Very chill guy but honestly I could not say that I learned anything valuable.
Steve is friendly, marks according to the rubric he gives. If you follow instructions it's an easy A. there is always group work involved which is not so demanding. He is easily available to listen to you and responds to every email. He goes out of his way to remind students to meet deadlines and explains assignments in depth.
The workload is manageable, especially for a 6 credit course over the summer, but hes a tough marker and his feedback isnt very helpful. For someone who completed a BA in 22 months, its weird that he takes weeks to grade work. It sucks because youre doing stuff week after week but have no idea if youre doing it well. Responds to emails though.
The class was easy but he took weeeeeks to input marks, had an NGR on my transcript because he didn't input my grade until I emailed him about it. The course is 90% readings and maybe one 5 minute lecture, prof only interacted with you if you emailed him directly.
He makes you buy his book as a textbook and it is kind of expensive considering your also paying for his course. The entire course is done asynchronously but the way he designed the moodle/class page is very hard to navigate and understand. He is a super hard marker and is very particular about word choice. He is accessible through office hours.
He made us read our essays out loud to him over zoom and he criticized them in real-time. His edits were made over zoom through annotations so you don't even have physical feedback to refer back to. His suggestions were not helpful because he did not read my entire essay.
He leaves good feedback on applying course concepts to real life experiences and is a generous grader. Once I got my marks back I was surprised to see an A, would recommend this prof as he cares about his students success, emails to remind us to take synchronous tests and encourage us to complete our work, and holds office hours.
Gave 2 weeks to complete each assignment and project. No recorded lectures to watch, only YouTube vids. Considering the course was fully online with no scheduled meetings, he barely gave any feedback on your work which was super unhelpful. Also, his design challenge instructions were confusing and very broad. Honestly wouldn't recommend...
Dr. Gennaro offers flexible office hours, no readings, no weekly work, easy assignments with generous deadlines, and grants extensions. However, there are no clear instructions, no personal feedback, late grading, and limited communication—questions must be posted on forums, often with no response. (There are more negatives, but I can't write more)
Horrible Prof, do not take! Also seriously?? You only print the syllabus and hand it out on the first day and refuse to use eclass? Why are you living in the dark age yet teaching a class about communication and media??
The coolest prof at the York. Moderate readings and activities. Straight forward and easy to understand. He is flexible, remember every student's name. Textbook is on the online york library that you don't have to buy it. He is understanding prof of students. Highly recommended! This is the one subject I really enjoyed.
