Fair marker. Gives you the benefit of the doubt. don't bother taking notes in class. He moves too fast and gives you literally one second to copy down 10 pages of notes. weekly assignments were too time consuming. each assignment had over 120 questions. no surprises on midterm and final but my class took entire three hours and still did not finish
His teaching is ok, but he basically just read off his notes from ppt. However, lectures are mandatory because he will discuss some extra topics which will appear on mt and finals (and that worths quite a lot). Exams are fair and no surprises if u do all your weekly assignments and go to his lectures. P.S. his monontone will bore u to tears!
His tone of voice is enough to make you hate accounting. He is unclear, rushes through 100-slide lectures, and is just a general pain to learn from. Luckily our TA was great, and she explained things that he glossed over. I did not like his style, attitude, and lecture delivery, and i would not suggest his class.
His lectures are so boring, along with the dim light...just make you want to sleep. He is the only prof who allows twice attempts for online work (any other profs allow three times). Quizs all the time. The average is 77% in midterm. Final is not super hard as long as you go through text. However, if you have Nate as your TA, you should be fine.
this class was boring and just wouldn't end. i got a B on midterm and ended up with C, even though i though i did better on final. strange, im gona ask to see the final.
Great Prof! A nice guy. He has a lot of experience in the field. If you really interest in accounting, you would appreciate him.
His exams aren't hard as long as you do some practice questions before exam.
Either you'll hate him or love him! I loved him!! Made lots of jokes in tutorial and was pretty chill. Don't piss him off though, or else he'll make the course hell for you! Midterm was easy as long as you do prac questions, final was pretty hard though! Got an A+ though.
easy class
not that bad, make sure u do the practice questions b4 the exam. and read the articles he talks about in the lecture. i always fall asleep during the 1st hour of the lecture, the 2nd half is really interesting though.
Good guy, constantly trying to improve his teaching style. If you study, you'll get an A. If you don't study, you'll fail (surprise surprise)... but please don't complain.
Good prof! You should take his class if you really wanna learn something. What's point of the university if you are always trying to find the easiest course?
i got kiciked out the class while i laid on my desk. And i never skip class.
No surprises on midterm or final, but make sure you know your stuff!!! Lectures are a complete bore..hes super hot tho :P
i found him to be very very hot which was a plus, but other than that he was horrible...hard class..be prepared for the worst
trust me , if you need to take financial accounting take it with this guy. the course is tough to begin with but steve has no suprises on his mid & final. YOU ALSO LEARN A HECK OF ALOT IN HIS CLASS. only go to class for his theory questions on the final otherwise just read the textbook and youll do fine.
As long as you attend his lectures, do his assignments and read the textbook then you'll be fine. Midterm and final are no surprises.
Pretty good with explaining, exam questions are similar to homework & questions he goes over, and sometimes even exact same.
Awesome prof! Gives lots of A+'s! Hard course, but easy exams since no surprises. Go to lectures for the extra slides that show up on the exams as essay questions. Just do tutorial and review lecture questions. MCQs can be hard though.
Horrible teaching style
Mr.Gibson's way of teaching isn't helpful because he tends to rush over slides quickly and only stresses on the ones that are very important. However this makes the course very overwhelming. If you are capable of learning on ur own, u shud do great because Mr.Gibson is only there for additional help.He tends to be very unapproachable.
Lecture was boring, he doesnt do a good job of teaching (I stopped going) not that helpful except for company examples he uses show up on the exams. Read the text and do the text questions to do well. Exams are more than fair just do practice. Tutorial usefulness depends on your TA but mandatory since there are quizzes.
Awesome prof very helpful and no surprises no exams. He does try to scare people in the start of the semester saying the final is really hard although I found it easier than the midterm
he is not a good prof! the exams are brutal!!! totally tricked us on the final, went in knowing everything, came out thinking what the hell just happened!A MUST AVOID!!!! he's american and thats all he can talk about, dont do it, just dont!
loves that he's american (...why?) and goes on and on about it. is obviously smart and knowledgeable about business but either hates teaching, sucks at teaching or both. he grudgingly explains the basics but doesn't really get into details. i'd say avoid him, but i don't know who can make an accounting class fun/easy
Funny Guy, the course is tough, so no one can make it easier, he goes too fast on the slides and his time management sucks, exams are not that bad, some people had the question from before
Best accounting prof. No surprises on exams at all. Hilarious prof, get him as your TA. Course is lot of work but as long you do tutorial question and wiley questions you should get an A+ unless you are one of those lazy students who just likes to complain LOL
Only cares about his Harley Davidson. God damned Capitalists!!!
Who has rated him with a perfect score? He's a horrible prof, doesn't really care about his students - he does the job for the sake of his job. Lectures are extremely pointless because he goes too fast. Do NOT take this course with him.
Go to lectures because he does questions from the textbook that sometimes appear on the midterm and final. Overall, this course is easy as long as you put a little bit of effort into it.
Very easy course as long as you do the weily questions. Hot prof and clear accent. extremely helpful.
HE SUCKS AT TEACHING. LEARNED NOTHING FROM HIM. HAD TO READ TEXTBOOKS AND WORK ON WILEY BY MYSELF. EXAM QUESTIONS COME FROM WILEY. EXAM IS EASY BUT YOU HAVE TO WORK HARD ON WILEY AND STUDY BY YOURSELF SINCE HE DOESN'T TEACH ANYTHING AT ALL SO YOU DON'T NEED TO ATTEND HIS LECTURES.
Avoid if you can. Lectures are messy, unorganized, and will only occasionally focus on important material
The material can be tough but he was really funny so i didn't mind going to his lectures. I recommend taking BUS251 with him. :)
Not a bad guy, not a bad prof. He doesn't explain the material as thoroughly as needed in a course like this, but the text does. You must read the text to understand the material, but you also must attend lecture because he uses examples that are also on the tests. Pasha is the TA to get for this class. He knows exactly what Steve is looking for.
The worst Professor in SFU. Save your money and take your class with someone else. Not at all helpful.
Steve is an ok teacher. The class is relatively easy but the group project was a disgrace since it was the first time he was teaching this class he had no idea how difficult the project was. The material in the class was not very difficult and Steve did an ok job teaching it but he dosent go out of his way to help anyone.
The prof expect you read all the textbook before you come to class, and expect you already know everything. The lecture is messy, he would say something randomly when he just remembered.
Steve-o rules. Sure he might think BUS374 is a load (as any intelligent business student should) and it might show in his effort, but I doubt any prof could make this nonsense (OB round 2) any more interesting. The presentations were fun too. Plus, if you were in his shoes, wouldn't you wanna teach a low maintenance course like this?
Steve seems to be strict but he is nice and helpful. He responded to my email quickly. He gave a lot of exercises and practice in the class. Pay attention to the exercises in class; it will be in exams. One of the point is you MUST read the textbook. If you can, I'm sure you can get B up.
His time management is not so good and his lecture is not as helpful as it is supposed to be. Even though he is kind of strict,he is a funny guy and his classes are not boring, his exams are easy and manageable.Reading the text will and adding more effort in assignments and tests will definitely guarantee you an A+
Definitely knows his stuff and what he's talking about, however, lacks in the clarity department. Exams aren't bad at all if you do all homework assigned and practice questions, should guarantee you atleast a B.
Boring prof, didn't like the way he taught. Doesn't send us lecture slides, only incompleted lecture notes that we have to fill out. Almost impossible. Exams were a bit on the hard side.
Steve's class is graded on effort. He gives quizzes in tutorial to make sure you're on top of things. Do the weekly textbook questions and learn the key concepts by heart. I got 120.5/130 on the midterm by prereading and doing all the textbook questions. Lectures didn't help me much, but they are informative to an extent and can be helpful.
Disorganized, not very pleasant. Exam determines your grade. Not recommended.
Not the best prof to take this course with.
Even though people hate this guy, i claim the opposite. I loved taking this class with him because it was kind of chilled. Advise is, just make sure you read your text cause you wont get much from him during lectures. He is kind of strict but nothing extreme. Exams are easy if you read/study. Just be on his good side and you will enjoy the class :)
He is my professor for Organizational Behaviour. He is really funny, he makes the class really interesting. However, without the the attendance sheet you wouldnt need to go to that class. He is hard marking, but almost all his exams are MCQs and confusing
Actually sometimes u can do self-learning with notes without listening his lecture and if u read book u can get almost full scores in MCQ.
He is a very challenging person, but once you get to know him, you start to enjoy his lectures. His lectures don't contain a lot of important details, but he makes you understand the concept as a whole. My advice would be:1.You have to read the book. 2.You don't have to be scared of him, be on the same wavelength and you will succeed.
Highly recommended if you're willing to put in your effort for this class. I was hesitant in taking his class after seeing his rating but honestly he is so underrated. Accounting is usually not the easiest class but he is very clear with his explanation and very approachable. Overall, very good prof
keep talking about joke during class and tests are extremely hard. worst professor for OB
not the best teacher for accounting
He's not one for giving enthusiastic lectures, but he's pretty clear about what he wants you to know. The tests for this course were tough, but only because of the sheer amount of questions; the material itself was pretty basic (that's coming from someone with no interest in accounting). Be prepared to write quickly and you'll do fine!
most of the exam question were solely based on the textbook. what will screw you over is the group presentations in the tutorials. hardest marker ever. Another thing he did was make 25 marks on the final on 2 little videos watched in lecture. I didnt go to that one class and got screwed. SO UNFAIR
I took bus251 and bus272 with him. Accounting was hard, but Organizational Behavior class was awesome - he's interesting and makes some really funny jokes.
boring class. if you have another choice, do not take this professor.
To do well, you will have to read the textbook and do the tutorial questions he assigns. His exams are fair and relevant to what he teaches. No complaints
Extremely nice and helpful instructor. His exam is fair and as long as you work hard, things would be fine.
Only looks towards the board and solves questions. Does not engage the class AT ALL!
Really enjoyed Steve's lectures. If you keep up with the lectures and homework, you can cruise through the class. Uses good analogies. Parts of lecture are sometimes used for quizzes which often just replace/copy homework questions, which is easy. For what the material is (arithmetic and intuition), his lectures are pretty engaging.
Basically paying to watch him do calculations. He sprints through lecture material as if you should already know what he's talking about and only engages with like two people who are really smart. He gives open book quizzes every week that you do with a partner (however it doesnt help because both of you are probably confused anyway). Worst prof!
Worst prof. AVOID taking with him.
Steve is ok but his lecture was unorganized. Hard marking on the exam.. Would not take again with him
Steve is one of the better profs that teaches BUS 254. His lectures will be boring at times but he is somewhat funny as well. The exams are tiring but are not too difficult. Overall, not a bad prof.
This is not a tough course. You can get good exam result if you do the handouts given by him. I missed 5 classes out of 13 because his classes were very boring.
He expects the students to do all the things before class. Prepare and give the quiz before the chapter is taught. The quizzes are too difficult because they are meant to be given after chapter is taught , but he doesn't understand that. Too conscious while teaching. Run away for your lives.
Nothing we can learn during the class, learn whole stuff by self.
Read book and understand his lectures.
Clear lectures
Nice guy
Hes such a nice professor and just go to his office hours!! Hell provide all helps to you!!
I love his lectures very much
He is a good presenter.
He is the best professor I met
He is humorous.
Organised notes
He has most organised materials and focusing on his materials is fine hehe
Good and funny lectures
No homework at all and you will get a good grade.
He is generous.
Hes speech is inspiring and youll find there is a new world of accounting!!
The tests are fair, he gives enough additional material to pass the course The biggest disadvantage is his attitude towards students. During working hours he is actually nice and willing to help but when it comes to class... His ironic jokes r good, but each and every class he reminds students that they will fail - it's not OK
he is ok. too much little stuff that makes you have to go to class?
Worst prof in the history of worst prof. Most discouraging. No mutual respect. You'll be better off with any other prof but him.
A lot of the material in the exams were things he never he mentioned in class. Expecting us to learn large portions of chapters and online articles on our own, when he could easily have covered them in class is frustrating. The grading criteria is unclear and has a poor attitude towards students.
He's awesome for accounting.
He's not a harsh grader thats for sure however, dont expect the course to be easy BUS251 is not easy for anyone who never study acc before. The best way to survive his class is to NEVER get on his nerve, do homeworks, ask good and reasonable questions (dont ask random questions) and study outside class. Not the best at teaching but fair grader.
I only have one word for Steve - Discouraging. Will make his students feel embarrassed and dumb and thinks he knows it all. When you try to ask him about anything, will make 0 eye contact as if you don't exist and will brush you off. Never wrote a review but had to write one for him. Please save your grade and yourself from this being. Fr no cap.
The sem's nearly over & in all honesty, Steve's been a really great prof. He does a lot of in class examples, is pretty lenient w/ marking & he's just super personable. He's quite sarcastic, but like, hey, accounting/finance is zzzz, so any opp for some lols I'm down! Given COVID-19 rn, he's doing the most to get the material thru to us. Thanks!
Spent much time reviewing and finally found the stuff in the exam was totally differentMany things you have never met before.
If you can avoid this man, do so. His lectures are messy. The best example I could think of you make you reconsider is that he didn't use Excel to show how to do a balance sheet. EXCEL, in an accounting class... Who would have thought.
BE WARE! AVOID HIM AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. He doesn't teach properly, will just read slides and not explain. He will make fun of you for not knowing the answer. NOT AT ALL HELPFUL.
The tests are very hard. He does not explain well. I understand nothing about his lecture. Reading the book makes me get higher scores compared to my peers, but I was not helped by his lectures.
We had 100 mins to do the midterm with 50 questions. Extra 4 marks were added to the midterm because he said we didn't have enough time to do it. However, we only had 90 mins for the final with 58 questions, it involved lots of calculations. The short time limit for quizzes and exams almost drove me crazy. Don't understand what he's thinking.
Tough grader. Does not sympathize with students.
very negative teacher... beware of surprise quizzes first thing early in the morning...
Does two chapters a week and two quizzes a week. He expects his students to already be affluent in the material. His class examples tell you the answer, and while he explains the conceptual reasoning for them, he does not show you the steps to calculate. Hence why there are low averages for quizzes and tests. If you can, choose a diff prof
The course covers a lot of ground and it builds on previous courses. Hate the material but cannot fault the professor. He provided lots of videos and extra practice quizzes. Not a good class to take if you dont want to work. But it is required for Bus minor and it is a 4 credit class.
Do not enroll it unless necessary!!!
On the first day of class, stated that most are going to fail because he is going to do everything in his power to make sure we fail, seems proud about it as well. You will need a lot of dedication to pass the subject. Have all the red flags a prof can possibly have, unfortunately, he's the only one teaching the subject.
Steve is a one of the best professors at SFU. His class is always fun and he uses lots of humour which makes even the boring lectures fun. Make sure you keep up with the lectures by self-study and you'll be fine. Honestly, the course itself is not tough. It just needs a bit of practice and Steve's amazing knowledge.
He is 'that' white guy. Does not care about any of his students. He is a racist. Does not provide any feedback. Rude; I can keep going. Please stay away from him.
Good luck. This professor can't even explain certain key concepts properly, yet tells us to not follow the textbook at certain points because its 'too difficult'. The way the quizzes, assignments, and exams are set up are not to learn, but simply to derail you. IF on the offchance there's another prof, take anyone but him. Moneymaker for SFU.
You won't have a choice if you are at FIC. He is actually not that bad and he creates opportunities for students to do better. Start studying right away from the semester to keep up. If you do everything (reading and practicing) that he posts, then you should be good to go. Just show him that you want to learn and improve. Office hours are a mustgo
The semester is almost over and I can honestly say Steve is a nice guy. I failed the first two midterms and was pretty salty towards him and the class too, till I started going to his office hours, reading his handouts clearly and really paying attention in class. He's honestly so funny too. Work hard = you'll do well
Accounting is already a hard subject and He confuses you more. Be prepared to study and try and understand everything for yourself, exams are hard but he makes you think they are so much harder than they are, gives handouts a lot and they help so study those, the second half of the semester is tough so be prepared. good luck.
A true gatekeeper for Beddie School of Business. Only people with determination can pass this course. However, don't let others, even Steve, discourage you from passing the course because it is truly easy if you put in the time. Steve uses psyops big time. He is funny tho.
Honestly, he is actually a cool person. Just read the textbook guys. Jeez.
The prof is not for softies and encouragement-seeking weak-minded individuals. Yes, the course is super hard and yes, the prof makes it harder. However, I still loved every second of the 13 4-hours lectures because of the based jokes from this guy. Your grade and your ability to get along the prof will determine if BBA is really for you.
It was perfect, down to the nearest minute detail. Very good prof, amazing notes and challenging homework and samples. This course is not for the weak tho.
Run for your life! ! ! DON'T TAKE IT! ! Just leave him without any reason. Otherwise, you will fail from our respectful "Steve-o & Gibco" company owner :)
Very boring, non stop stuttering in lectures, barley knows anything about the course he is teaching. Unclear assignments, unclear deadlines, changes assignment instructions the day before they are due, changed course grading scheme multiple times throughout the semester. Assignments aren't too hard but not a good overall experience.
Rambles ALOT, lectures are super boring!
GOOD LUCK!!!! Horrible.....
Never met this instructor made the midterm exam like this hard.....
He is very unorganized and it is very boring. He seems to make up a lot of content on the spot and rambles about personal matters more than lecture content. He is also very unempathic and does not care to answer students questions or support their learning. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
No no no guys. Just run...no no...
boring lectures, not engaging at all. the curve saved me
Steve regularly questions the capability of his students and takes no responsibility for his student's failures. He is blunt, rude, and unaccomodating, overcomplicating his lecture material to the point where self-teaching is necessary. Truly unfortunate that Business Minor students are stuck with only one professor for this course.
Not a good speaker. I don't know why he is teaching, I sense no passion. More like just a job for him. I learned by looking at worked out solutions, not by listening from him. I'm nearly done my degree and have had my fair share of good and bad profs. This prof is in my bad profs list in terms of quality and attitude. Worst of all is the attitude.
Did that one review said he is easy after failing 2 midterms lol
If you are an incoming fic stuents, wanting to take 216 DO NOT take this prof. He will make sure your life in this course misrable with his stuttering speech, and very tough grading in the presentation
worst teacher in FIC.. i suggest dropping his course.
Just RUN He is not a good speaker and have no passion in teaching, always degrading students tell you you are not smart enough to pass the course.
Does not teach anything about accounting and already assumes you know what to do. Rambles a lot in class about Taylor Swift, Elon Musk, and how America is so great and China being inferior. You will learn more about BUS251 in youtube, just look for "Tony Bell" channel and you will have everything you need.
Honestly, I can tell you that it's pretty rough with this professor. He's just mean and doesn't explain the assignments or content well at all. his explanations can be super confusing I wouldn't say I hate the guy, but he's just not a great teacher. If you take this course with him be ready to fail. I recommend looking for another professor.
Follow instructions, Do as he says, and you will be fine. He is scary yes, but tbh I think it is all part of a persona he likes to play during class to frighten students. Don't try to play dumb on him, he is NOT scared of giving zeros. Fun fact: he is a Taylor swift and hello kitty fan (pay attention to lectures and you'll notice lol)
A living legend. If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. Steve is an example of Accounting upper division courses at Beedie.
His classes reminded me of life in prison
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!! Worst prof i've ever taken, has a huge ego but not confident and can barely maintain any eye contact. avoids accountability on EVERYTHINGGG. He forces you to buy the book first class and never used it once. He tends to ramble alot but there is no content to his yapping so its just 4 hours of ur day wasted. 0/10 prof
Honestly not as bad as I expected it to be. Be ready for pop quizes. But not very difficult if you keep up with class materials. I would reccomend attend every class and especially pay attention to in class examples/ questions. He does tend to ramble but explains the questions well. If you don't understand, there's always AI.
When I read the reviews before taking the prof I was scared cause everyone said he was really horrible but when I took the class, he's not bad at all. he's funny at points, he makes dad jokes haha but of you just stick to what he asks of you then you are good to go. follow his instructions and you will get a good grade. just a bit grumpy
Hey, at least he is fair. I dont know why he has this low of a rating, at least he doesnt go around accusing people of cheating like Layla Cameron. Solid prof overall, you just need to study!
He is very humorous
Amateur lecture presentations looked like it was done be a kid in high school. Grading for exams was all over the place no consistency. Doesn't seem like he cares about teaching or wants to see his students succeed. Doesn't offer help outside of office hours. If you take this class get ready to learn everything on your own
The concepts were tough, and he wasn't the best at explaining . Lecture slides were formatted poorly and showed up all scrambled up when you tried to download them. Be ready to do a quiz like every class, plus 2 mid terms and a final. The course was way too test heavy. if you do bad on quizzes or exams, nothing else brings your grade up.
avoid him at all costs if you can even if u have to wait until next semester for a new prof, it'll be absolutely worth it.
Steve was an amazing lecturer and provided content that was very much helpful to my real life. He is a tough grader in that he often marks based on negative marks (subtracts for what you get wrong instead of adds for what you get right), but he provides you practice quizzes and in-class quizzes (not for marks) that are extremely similar to the exam
