I actually learned a lot from him, but his tests were so so hard and almost impossible to study for.
His test questions are nearly impossible to predict, but this class didn't have too much material. It is not tough to succeed in the class.
he is an amazing lecturer, but has no care for his students and expects way too much of them. He is an ****
If you can learn from someone who stares are the ground and says "Umm" every other word, then great. Otherwise avoid whenever possible. His grading is very sporadic, and unfair.
Is very moody, one day will be fine, then the next he can snap. I would recommend staying out of his lower level classes if possible. His upper level classes I heard are better though.
Yuck.
Teacher is not clear on what material will be tested...a direct quote when asked if we could expect a certain topic on a test "I can't tell you that. Its all part of the game." He showes no concern for students. Has no direct criteria for his
You only have 3 grades in this class, and they are essay style tests. He is arrogant and very unhelpful. I would recommend that you NEVER EVER take this professor as he doesnt teach the test, you have to read it.
I heard the rumors and decided to ignore them, thinking things were exagereated like usual. Don't count on him helping if you have a question, don't try predict what will be on one of the three grades that are given as essay tests. A do-it-yourself-class
Boooooooooooooring. Tests pretty easy. He wrote the book, so its in the book.
He says "ummm" alot and is very dry. But he lets you know right at the beginning that you need to read the book (he wrote it), everything you need to know for the test is in there. You do have to work for your grade, but if you are willing you
AVOID! tells you up front he will not answer questions. expects memorization of the book he wrote. horribly boring lectures, says "uuuhhh" 8,000 in 1 hour. will stop entire lecture if you open a soda can in the lecture hall.
Truly one of the most anal professors I have ever had. You should realize that you are in trouble when you are using the textbook that he wrote...
Very Boring
I heard bad things about him, but when i took him he must have changed. Still only 3 tests but he gives your the test topics for essay exams, you just have to remember what to write on the tests.

Not easy and expects a lot for being a one hundred class, but i find i learn more in his class than any other history class. Take it only if interersted in learning this tedious material.
As long as you read it's not too bad...however...I do recomend that you take the hour and a half section twice a week and not the three hour section once a week. If you go for once a week good luck staying awake.
He grades like it's higher than a 100 level course, it's very unfair. The tests this year were different than what I've heard from other people that had him, but still hard. He is a very harsh grader on writing, so pay attention. Take this only if you are a history major.
He makes the class very boring. He isn't too helpful and rude if you aren't one of the better students. The only entertainment you get out of the class is counting the amount of times he will say "ummmmm" Too hard to be a 100's class.
Terrible teacher. Won't answer questions in order to hwlp you achieve "academic independence" Don't ever take one of his classes. He wouldn't give you an extention on anything even if a giraff ate your dad and you needed to go to the funeral.
RUN, Run like hell. This guy is terrible. The hardest 100 level class possible. It could not possibly be any more boring either.
Will NOT respond to any email questions. This is very unhelpful. Tests are tricky.
I took Vietnam as a GE even though history majors warned me. He's boring and very unhelpful, but there's no secret to the tests. He picks pretty random topics but as long as you study, you can easily do ok. I got a B+, just write everything you ever learned about the tet offensive and you're good.
I had him for World History (not sure on the class number) but this man was awful! He was not helpful, and kicked someone out of class for COUGHING. He will not look over test with you, nor help you understand his boring readings. (Accidentally posted this under gough at first-disreagard there)
stay away from this professor...he is boring!!! tests r near impossible...doesnt care about his students and will not help u. good luck stayin awake...by far the hardest professor at EC
Worst professor I have ever had.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!! i hated this class. the tests were impossible and the classes boring. very unhelpful and unpleasant man. run from this class!
He is very boring and hard to pay attention to. I DO NOT recommend taking this class if possible.
Horribly Boring. Most test questions have nothing to do with lecture or readings. Grading sux. Unhelpful and can be rude. Avoid him!
Professor Gosch isn't nearly as bad as everyone else here says he is. He may not be the most exciting person in the world, but he offers to help and answer questions if you need. Also, the tests aren't bad as long as you read the text and take notes (woah, what a concept!!)
Im a history minor, and I hated his class. Expects a lot, hard to keep your attention.
hey, i love history and he's forever tainted it for me....not too hard on tests imo but don't expect him to be civil or treat you even close to an intelligent person- rude and extremely arrogant- i never met a bigger jerk....don't expect him to help you out at all..read and take notes on everything

He appears to be near death. He is boring and condescending. His tests are impossible and he ends up needing to add 14 points to test scores so that everyone isn't failing. He grades easy on essays though. Painful class to sit through. Take Kate Lang rather than this guy.
Hard professor, but a nice guy.He tells you where the questions are coming from on the test, but they are by no means black and white.People bad mouthing him are probably just soar that they were to dumb to do well. With his curve you only need to be smarter than the average student.
the worst prof at uwec...drop it before its too late...i recieved the first F in my life in his 100 level class...he should be fired for his lack of enthusiasum and his arrogant attitude
Prepared for Bow Ties and wild and crazy times
He hates his students. He looks weird. I was interested in the topic even though I'm not a major. The best part about the class was the slides. Take with caution.
Interesting class which makes more use of primary source materials than most history classes. Don't let reviews for 124/125 scare you--the class will be fine. Actually a nice guy, and pretty laid back for this class.
The kids in the 100 level history classes don't seem to like this Professor but in 387 he was very flexible and let the class determine what direction we wanted to go. I learned a lot from him and really enjoyed the class, Gosch surely deserves a higher rating on here!

Very unclear in what he wants you to learn in the class. only positive aspect i found to the class is that with everything being so difficult the class had a massive curve. I should have gotten a C-, but with the curve got a solid A.
I can see why some students really fear h, especially at the 100 level, but personally I liked him. In both of his upper level classes, I really learned a lot and would recommend him to most students, especially ofthe history majors. My advice is just dont get on his bad side, learn to deal with his OCP and do the work and you will do fine
Gosch totally fits the mold of how college professors are portrayed on tv. No real life to his lectures, and he requires you to do ALOT of reading. If you are a history nut, or if you're interested in History, you will love him. He is strictly business and is a very good teacher if History is your thing, otherwise this class will be a challenge.
Gosch is a very "old school" style professor. It is apparent from the way he dresses and by the little things that bother him(watch out) He is very knowledgeable, but not always good at getting the point across. Tests are 1/2 essay 1/2 MC. I would not recommend to those who have not taken history classes before or do not have time to read much.
he was kind of boring, cause i had the three hour lecture, but is a nice guy, and gave an extra credit exam, which was awesome.

If you do the reading, attend class, and study, you will do fine. He is odd and has some peculiar demands, like sit up straight or leave class. Nice enough guy. Has a nice curve.
If you have no problems at all with any of his requirements, you'll do fine. But he refuses to show any kind of leniancy, is not helpful at all, and if you get on his bad side forget about getting a good grade. He also never uses notes for class, so be prepared to write your own entirely out of lecture with only a vague outline.
He knows his stuff but he can be kinda boring. Show him respect and he'll give it right back.
He really knows his stuff, and I've heard he has made the test easier than in years past. The class is not too hard. Just put in some effort and you'll do fine.

Quarky, but good. Bowties seemed to distract me a lot, but he knows his stuff. Read and take notes in class and you'll do fine.
By far, has some of the poorest teaching skills out there. Dont expect to learn enough from class to pass classes. Aside from that, he is very intelligent and is very knowledgeable
Good class. Gosch is very enthusiastic about history and knows his stuff. Its a little boring bc its a lecture (duh) but the reading is really easy and its not an absurd amount. The tests are easy (and he adds estra points to them), he gives an extra credit test, and there's only one small paper thats graded really easy. If you like history-take it
Extremely knowledgable
WOW...the most boring class I've ever been to, and I really like history and find it very interesting. His knows a ton, and it seems like he does his lecture purely on his own knowledge. His tests are hard and requires you to study notes, and know details in 2 separate textbooks (Once was written by him!!!)!!!!
The class is sooooo boring!!! Pay good attention to his lectures and make sure you read the readings he assigns, which are A LOT!! his tests are pretty hard and confusing. He's not very helpful if you ask for help, and if you don't already know a lot about history i would not recommend him!! If you take this class.. GOOD LUCK!!
He is not very helpful in that he never returns e-mails when you need help, and he has no sympathy if you are having trouble. Big problem for a 100 level class
this teacher sucks , no sympathy at all. do not take this teacher if you can get around it . he will push you over the edge.
Very smart but not too helpful or easy!!!
tHE BIGGEST jerk ever... never helps you out and the class is extremely boring. Inconsistant grader on quizes, people in the class will have the same answer as you on the quiz, but he won't give you points. He shouldn't even be allowed to be a professor.

The exams have absolutely nothing to do the readings or the lectures. The test questions are some of the most absurd things I have ever seen on a history exam. Avoid if possible!
This is the worst professor in the history department, and possibly the entire university. His exams are vague and generally don't contain things covered in the reading or lectures. He is extremely unhelpful and it seems he hates the student polulation in general. Very unsympathetic to any difficulties. He should not be a professor.
Very enjoyable professor, good sense of humor and easily understood.
He is probably one of my favorite professors I've ever had. Great sense of humor, and intellectually intriguing/challenging. People who don't take their education seriously tend to not like him.
Difficult quizzes and tests, won't help you so you get "intellectual self reliance." Do not take unless you are a complete history genius.
A great professor with a witty sense of humor. He forces you to think for yourself and while he can be challenging, you will definately do well if you take good notes and read the assigned chapters.
he´s awesome. perhaps an acquired taste, but i´m pretty sure this man knows something about everything. he will help you if you want guidance, and not someone to hold your hand. overall??? amazing.
Tough
I wish I would of followed my instinct and not taken this class. I reviewed the comments on here and thought that he couldn't be that bad, but unfortunately he was! I would recommend not taking his classes.
He made the class way harder than it needed to be. The tests were incredibily hard. Classes were kinda interesting, but the quizzes and tests made me dread going to his class and I'm a history major.
I had him for a 100 class then had him for a 300 class, he must hate freshman and sophomores because he was a jerk in the 100 class and cool in the 300 class, but regardless of class level he will punk you in front of the whole class if you try to pull anything
this professor knows his stuff...very smart guy...but he basically stands in front of the class and talks, its hard to take notes and the tests were ridiculous! he does offer extra credit though which can totally bump up your grade.
He's not as bad as people make him out to be. I had him for 124, and it wasnt bad, the tests werent too hard, he was just dull, but i think thats bc he wasnt interested in the course. i later had him for 288, 374, and 395, and he was great! its just bad luck when you have him in a class that he's not interested in. He's way better in upper division
Dr. Gosch is a difficult Old school teacher. Good listening skills are a must. Emphasizes self-reliance. Best teacher I have ever had!
his classes are hard!!!!
Lectures are a joke not pretaingin to test. Teacher says "UM" every 10 seconds. Timed. Do not look to him for answers too questions or he WILL ridicule you. Test are composed of knowledge that he used in writing text that are abstracted. DO NOT TAKE COURSE.
very boring prof. full of himself and will make you fall asleep in class almost every day. tests and quizes have nothing to do with lectures.
He emphasises self-reliance and won't answer any questions regarding the test. I enjoyed this quality because it makes you think more and you benefit in the end. His lectures are generally dull but he makes random, goofy comments that make you laugh. He is challenging but if you aren't a slacker you'll do fine.
If you can be taught by someone who repeats, stutters, and talks to the floor, then this is the professor for you. If you can not be taought this way I sugest finding a different professor.
This course required a lot of textbook reading. The quizzes aren't too bad, but the tests are tough, with a few questions that weren't in the notes. You can present to the class for extra credit. Professor Gosch is a nice guy with a bohemian sense of humor. But he's a bit hard of hearing and unsure of himself when he speaks.
he is a very good teacher...he knows is stuff
i hate this dude
Unlike a lot of the other people here I really liked Gosch. Other then reading 1-3 short chapters a week there isn't a lot of work involved in the class. He is passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are interesting. If you keep up on your reading the quizzes and tests are easy
At first I was a little intimidated by him, but he's a pretty laid back guy (and not to mention has great taste in film). His lectures don't seem to match up with his tests, but if you read the assigned readings you'll be fine. His lectures are still worth going to.
Although intimidating at first, Gosch ended up being my favorite professor so far. Yes, his tests and quizzes are challenging, but if you read what is assigned and take decent notes you should be just fine. He seems very knowledgable and passionate about his lecture topics, and i actually enjoyed several of them. He was extremely helpful and nice.
A lot of students in my 124 class did not care for him, although I was the opposite. If you pay attention, do your work, and read the short/easy readings you will be A Ok! Also, ask unique/interesting questions as he seems to thrive on the idea that you are paying attention and learning. Good stuff!
hard prof. quizzes and tests are not based on his lectures. must read book and look for little details. he likes to ask about the small things. also, he is rude if you ask stupid questions
Steve Gosch is very knowledgeable, but he had trouble bringing that knowledge into lecture. The text book was rambling and vague. The test questions are obscure and often seem unrelated to what has been covered in the class thus far. I like him as a person, but he is a poor professor. He is unwilling to help students outside of class.
This guy has no people skills and is incompetent as a teacher
Simply put: He made me pursue a history major.
I took this class years ago. I didn't like the educator, the grade was comprised of only three essay tests. He spent way to much time showing us slides of boring material
