Prof Graves is awesome. Keeps his lectures fun and encourages participation. Helpful and understanding. Just do what he asks of you and you can get an A.
Boring Lectures. Student fall asleep in class. Hundreds of slides.
one of my favorit teachers ever, do the work on time and there's no way you can get a bad grade. Very funny guy
He's a really great professor.somewhat easy and funny.teaches a good class
If you don't have access to a high-speed computer & internet, forget this professor. He is computer-reliant and uses powerpoint. All notes, assignments are online. Lectures are horrible. Just clicks his powerpoint mouse and skips 100 slides and stops on one and talks for an hour. Awful teaching methods. Everything is done online on his site.
Okay class... Took it during the summer got a D+... bleh... not much to say. Boring lectures, lots of slides, pretty easy but you have to remember alot of things. He is a funny guy but class overall is okay.
his classes are easy, talkes about football, and movies, moreover teaches not that bad,and tests are easy
his lectures are sooooooooo boring! his work is easy! but everything is online!
Dr. Graves is an amazing teacher and cares about his student. His tests are made up of easy multiple choice questions. He gives interesting lectures and he adds some humor. TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU WANT TO GET AN "A", he makes it possible
Great Teacher! I had very little interest in Cultural Geography, but he made the subject interesting. As long as you turn in your assignments on time, you will do well in his class. Not to mention, he isn't bad to look at either!
Great Guy, Easy Going, Very Helpful, hated the class though. Not an easy A for an upper GE so be careful. I suggest flipping through the coursebook, Cultural Geography written by Mitchell to see if this class is for you before you sign up. It's not for everyone or maybe just wasn't for me.
Great guy! Tests can be wordy but interesting lectures and assignments.
A very friendly and helpful teacher. I would take him again if I needed a Geog course. His tests are self made and some questions are written poorly- which makes the questions difficult to understand and answer. However, he does make a blah class into something worth going to. There is no final or midterm- just quizzes and labs that are all online
Dr.Graves was an excellent teacher! He makes class materials very interesting and you learn a lot! The class only had quizzes and online labs because it was a summer class and he couldn't have us write papers. If you do have him during the regular semester, there will be more work. But, do take him if you need this class because he's AWESOME!
Dr. Graves was an awesome teacher....I loved going to class...it's not like a normal lecture, more like your talking with people for fun! You have some labs that are not too hard....two tests that are kinda of difficult but he does your grade mostly on participation and labs so don't stress the test...I recommend this class highley!
Dr. Graves is THE teacher. He's cool, funny, he relates everything to the here and now, he's very clear, openminded, complete hippy type guy. He gives a lot of work, but it's completely "do-able." I learned SOO much. He's my new favorite teacher on campus. He's an awesome, awesome teacher.
Nice guy....not the greatest professor however. Somewhat unclear, random, and disorganized with the layout of the class. Pretty easy class...but really boring...not what I expected. Also he is very picky about the papers and is unclear about those too.
Dr. Graves is great!!! Basically, his whole class is online, so there's no paper involved at all. There are quizes every week and lab homework, but nothing to difficult. He does grade kind of hard, but he doesn't punish you for late work. Definitely take his class if you want to have fun and learn at the same time!!!
If you go to class and just listen to the lectures, it's very easy to pass the quizzes. The online activities are easy and never take more than hour to complete. He's a very fair grader and gives you multiple opportunities to improve your grade. If this class is required, take it with Dr. Graves!
GEOG 417: HAD HIM DURING THE SUMMER AND HE WAS REALLY INTERESTING AND FUNNY. NO MID TERM OR FINAL JUST CONSISTANT 10 POINT QUIZZES ON STUFF FROM PREVIOUS CLASS' LECTURE. ALL OF HIS LECTURE NOTES ARE POSTED ONLINE. THERE WERE 5 EASY ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS. TOTALLY COOL TOTALLY NICE LEARNED A LOT AND DIDN'T HAVE TO DO TOO MUCH WORK.
Professor Graves is a great teacher. He loves geography and is determined to help students understand what they are doing. I took the online class which was really convenient.
Very picky, hard and disorganized. This guys class is like being stuck at your younger sister's birthday party with bad music and bad jokes. Besides his attitude and dumb jokes you have to deal with,he can't teach period....Worst ever!!! Irresponsible, Do not care attitude, Promise breaker, Lazy!
What? He was NOT TEACHING 417 IN THE SUMMER.... but he is teaching it now..... WOW.... such a suspicious review....
Tentative Grading Regime* 4. Exercises and Writing Assignments- 25% 5. In Class Quizzes- 50% 6. Assessment quiz, participation - 0 to 5% Grade Scale for Spring 2008 Min 23% max 78%. Good Luck!8-(
Wow. What a class! Dr. Graves is great! We had two essays, a reading quiz every week, and a couple of labs here and there. Overall, I learn a great deal. The class is a great intro for new geographers and the book is excellent. Graves is very approachable. The only negative is that he didn?t provide enough examples from physical/environmental.
He's nice but he makes no sense at all. He's willing to help u and explain it to u, but even then he makes no sense. Tests are hard and I didn't learn a thing in his class!
(wow to comment below, he did not discriminate anyone in my class). Funny, witty, nice, welcoming and INTELLIGENT. I'm not doing to well in the class, but it's my fault. He is an amazing professor over all. Loves the subject and makes things interesting. It is a lot of material and a lot of work for summer though, what was I thinking? lol
One of the best teachers I've ever had (Even for a 4 hour class). Excited about what he is teaching and relates it to life. Sensitive, relaxed, hippie type, loves his kids, bought the whole class pizza on the last day. Quizzes (10 ?'s)every week instead of midterm or final. Easy-sometimes tricky wording. Not a geog/hist fan but interested here.
He's one of the best professors I ever had here. You learn so much. He is the perfect example of what a professor should be! If you do all the readings and study for the quiz, its an easy A.
nice, fun, intelligent guy all around but very scatter brained. never seems prepared for class. almost everything's done on his website. weekly book quizes and labs. very difficult tests. overall a class i regret taking but hard to hate graves himself considering hes such an awesome guy. beware:he acts like somethings not important but to him it is
Looks like The Dude From The Big Leboski.Professor knows his stuff, tells interesting stories to relate to the teachings. Test are 30% book and 70% lecture. If you go to class you will pass. He is down to earth and out going, loves class interaction.. I will be taking his medical geography this coming spring. Dr.Graves your the man. Cool Class!
wow this guy is extremely rude. picks favorites. the quizzes are pre written so he lectures according to what he remembers on his quizzes. Not an easy A but if you don't care much about getting a A, then take this class.
If you care about getting an A in this class, you must have a great background in Cali history and geography. He chooses favorites according to personality, he will be 'smart' with his replies, and he uses all of his old material and tries to lecture what is on it. A really bad class to take if you want an A.
Very fair, study for those weekly qUizes. No final exam only a final paper. Easy5-7page of a film which must discuss it's geography. Fun, laid back class overall :)
He really is a fun professor and knows what he's talking about though he can get off track. You only have a midterm, a final, labs, and quizzes to depend on your grade. Most test questions come from lectures. But he doesn't give out study guides so you really have to know the material! The textbook comes in handy sometimes!
Professor Graves is absolutely amazing! Really knows his stuff and has a wonderful way of teaching. He does not pick favorites and is available to all of his students. Take this class seriously because the information is truly useful! You will definetly have to earn your "A" here, but you'll enjoy it!
This is one of the best classes I've take at CSUN. He is easy and clear. He also reviews the major quizzes as well as the labs. There is no midterm or final but there are mini quizzes at every class meeting. They are easy and you have all the sources available to you. He has a great personality that helps make the class entertaining. He's awesome!
4 months crammed into 13 days. An amazing experience! Learned a lot (more in this class than others!), he's personable, helpful & really tries to teach/engage you. All you have to do is complete the work & prepare for the no brainer daily quizzes. Wished CSUN offered more compressed classes so we could graduate sooner! Offered text online = save $!
Fun and awesome guy! Grade will be based on online quizzes, two tests, and interesting labs. You'll learn a lot of practical stuff and you'll get a better understanding of how the world works. He's down to earth and tells it like it is. Very knowledgeable. You'll like him even more if you like sports and classic rock! Overall, great class!
He is a nice guy easy to get along with if he sees that you are actually trying, he hates freeloaders so dont take this class if you think you can just sit and zone out for a few hours or get the answers from a friend. I learned a lot from his classes and it applys directly to the real world.
Graves is an excellent professor. As long as you show up every class and as long as you're not lazy, you will have no problems with him. The stuff you learn in this class gives you a better understanding of how this world works and other cultures.
Graves is awesome. He's a cultural geographer, so a lot of data that you work with is related to that. This class is contains a lot of busy work, the best I can offer you is to get everything done that is posted even if it's 3 weeks in advance so it's out of the way. No exams, just online assignments and assignments in class. SHOW UP TO CLASS.
Prof. Graves is awesome! he is fair, knowledgeable and funny. His class is very useful and actually related to real life unlike some other classes. I highly recommend him. hes the best.
Very enjoyable class, he's funny and interesting. It's not particularly hard just be prepared for a bunch of easy assignments and reading quizzes. Also you gotta be in class since nearly half the work is classwork.
Highly Recommend
Dont recommend the class. If you can avoid, do so.
SOOOOO annoying to go to his class. I dont recommend him.
Not gonna lie, I took this class thinking it was world geography. I don't particularly like this class, but Graves is a pretty cool guy. He knows what he's talking about, but pay attention. He doesn't like repeating what he says; it means you didn't pay attention. On the first day, he says: do your homework, and come to class. LISTEN TO HIM.
Great teacher who makes the class fun and I got an A. I took it in the summer and I enjoyed it. There are quizzes each class but he has pretest you do online before class that contains most of the question of the quiz. IF YOU JUST STUDY BEFORE CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS YOU WILL PASS THIS CLASS WITH AN A. Dude is hilarious.
I found the class interesting but i have always enjoyed geography. There are two quizzes for each section and prequiz and and postquiz, there are 4 map quizzes, and 3 to four labs, and a two page paper in the end. He walks you through every single thing and gives out a lecture outline. I thought he was funny and very interesting.
Really great professor! He tends to use personal stories in his lectures so it is never boring, and always finds a way to help the students pass
Overall a good teacher. His sense of humor definitely helps getting through the lectures. He cares about his students, is always their to help, and if you do the work you can easily pass the class.
This was a really interesting class and I learned a lot. His personal stories and pics make the class interesting. He really helpful. I enjoyed his class a lot.
Dr Graves made an 8 a.m. geography class really fun. Interesting lectures, but boring readings. Online quizzes every week, and a lot of questions from midterm and final are from the readings. 4 online labs, can be difficult, but let him know, and he'll help you out. Highly recommend
Dr. Graves does well making a tough subject a slight bit easier to understand. He does get off on random tangents at times that distract from the material, but overall he is an excellent instructor. He is very willing to help and makes spatial statistics easy to follow.
He is a great guy. He explains what he is lecturing and helps out students if they ask. He does wonder off when lecturing. He does joke a lot so the entire class isn't so boring. Just make sure to show up to class if you want to pass.
Dr. Graves is a really chill professor! Goes off topic A LOT! Midterm was brutal but don't fret since he curves. You will learn a lot! Stats suck but he attempts to make it easiest as possible! You have to put a lot of time into this class but its bearable ! Quizzes every week from the book and final project :)
Inspired me to change my major to Geography, he is a really great teacher! His textbook is online and free.
Dr. Graves is a very cool professor. He makes the subject much more interesting than I expected. He goes off topic sometimes. The labs are tough but he helps you with them. The midterm was hard but the practice midterms really help. Quizzes are weekly for every chapter. Book is free so thats a plus.
Professor Graves was great! This was my first geography class and I thought it would be boring. But as the semester went on it got really interesting. If you want an easy GE class, take this. The textbook is free and online and as long as you come to class and take notes, you'll do well on the tests and pass the class!
This was my first geography class and it was awesome! He is a funny teacher and really cares about his students! The textbook is free and online. Although there is a lot of studying for midterms. Definitely would retake!
He is a real gem! His lectures are the best, I was this close to change my major because of him. He is an amazing professor. Don't hesitate and take him
He's a pretty good professor, is really interested in his work. You don't need to buy the book since he wrote it and he has it online for free! Weekly moodle quizzes due by the time class starts and a few labs. the only thing is if you email him for help, he might give you a semi-sarcastic remark and not be very helpful.
This class was one of my favorites . I enjoyed his lectures because he made jokes and told stories from his life. I really recommend you to take him. he is super caring, answered my emails sooner than expected and has clear grading criteria. However, get ready to read A LOT. his book is online and free.
Great professor with great, hilarious lectures. Really enjoyed his class. Show up, do your damn work (online quizzes after each assigned reading for example... and they are really easy, listen to the lecture and you won't need the book) and you will pass with at least a B. I'd take him again in the future if I could
Professor Graves is a really great professor and I really recommend him if you're looking into majoring in the Geography department or in need of taking a G.E. class. There are times where his lectures can be boring, but his jokes about Spongebob will always have me dying in laughter. There are weekly quizzes and make sure you do them.
His lectures are always interesting because he likes to add in jokes to keep the class from falling asleep which are usually always funny. The study guides he gives out for the tests are basically the tests itself so just study all of them and you will pass. Weekly quizzes on the chapter is due before class, they're easy. Doing quizzes and labs A
The textbook is free because he wrote it himself so he has it online for the class. Textbook has some grammatical errors, but if you catch them and email him about them then he will give you extra credit for it. Labs seem time consuming at first but after the first one you'll finish them in 30mins - 1 hour. Really interested in his field so its fun
One of the best teachers I have had in CSUN. He cares about his students and his lectures are very engaging. idk if they will have this certain course again with him teaching, but overall he is a great teacher to take. EXTRA CREDIT will help you so much in the class, so do all the extra credit you can!
Professor Graves has my respect due to some reasons. Basically if you show that you care about your studies he'll work with you. I took his field studies class which requires participation. Pay attention to details and follow instructions. If you're a cultural geography major take him.
I absolutely loved Professor Graves' class. I actually enjoyed his lectures and I found he made a typically boring topic quite interesting for me. The best part was that he wrote his own textbook so we didn't have to pay for one. Definitely keep up on the reading and take notes in his class, and you should be fine. Very glad I took his class.
Super easy online quizzes (20% of grade), super hard online exams (60% of grade), easy map quizzes (15%), 5% participation. Online videos replace lectures. Exams were way too difficult for a 100 level course but Prof Graves made all possible efforts to help you out and is very quick to reply to emails. If you TRY you'll at least get a B.
I've taken Graves' classes multiple times and I would again. Not only is he motivational but he keeps the class going. He truly wants his students to pass. One of the greatest professors at CSUN. If you have a chance to take any of his classes, DO IT. He provides his own textbook that he wrote himself; its easy to read and follow along.
I only have trouble with his labs which are pretty hard and his tests are difficult as well. Overall, everything else is easy.
Professor Graves is one of the best professors I've ever had! He is extremely knowledgeable in his field and makes the subject very interesting. Attendance is not mandatory but his lectures are so great that I enjoyed being in class. He is respectful of his students and is always willing to work with them to ensure their success.
Textbook is online and FREE. Lectures were very interesting so I don't see why people skipped so often. Weekly online/open book quizzes online and he allows you to work with others. He makes the material fun and easy to learn. Online labs have step by step tutorials which makes them easy. This class makes me want to change my major to geography.
Dr. Graves is one of my favorite professors, i took his GEO 107 class. I recommend attending class regularly a lot of what are in his lectures are questions on the Midterm and final. He's very very understanding so if you're struggling or have a problem you can email him or come to his office and talk with him. Great guy outside of class and in.
Dr Graves is wonderful! Took this class for a GE & if you're looking for something easy yet interesting I highly recommend this class. Textbook is provided free online. Weekly reading & quiz online, & only 2 exams. You don't have to attend to pass, but I'd still recommend it. His lectures are interesting & he tries his best to make them fun.
He is a hilarious teacher. He does give you weekly reading assignments (i didnt read anything though but still passed) He really trys to help you if you are willing to ask. Strongly reccomend!
Great professor and very funny. His class is very easy if you read all the chapters and do well on the quizzes.
Great guy. Passionate about the subject he is teaching, open and willing to help others with whatever it might be. Good lectures, if you pay attention he sometimes gives test answers. Would absolutely recommend his class.
Overall the class was bad, mostly due to his insistence that exams and quizzes only have a 23 hour window to be completed. Basically the guy reads slides and expects you to know the whole chapter word for word, while being vague. He changed the calendar halfway through, but didn't change the syllabus, so I missed a few assignments because of that.
Good teacher. Lots of resources provided. Make sure you watch the lecture videos because the actual exams are not from quizlet. You have to understand the concepts. I learned a lot from him. Excellent teacher.
Professor Graves is the best professor I have ever had. This man is the reason why every other professor I rate gets a max of 4, because only this guy deserves a 5. He is fun, funny, engaging, interesting, and passionate. He makes geography cool and fascinating. Take his class and you'll want to be a geo major. It doesn't get better than Graves.
Graves is one of the best professors I have had at CSUN. I got a 99% on the midterm and 100% on the final. Just read the online book. He offered me a place in the geography department. I am now a geography minor because of this course. I honestly loved it. He is passionate and knows the topic. A really cool guy!
Professor Graves is a funny dude and very knowledgeable. The textbook is free and online, he wrote it for the course. What I did was print each chapter since I hate reading them online. Basically, you have weekly reading quizzes and labs which are pretty difficult, and 2 exams. I would not say this class was easy but you work extra hard to get A
Prof Graves knows a lot about geography! My only pet peeve about the professor was that when it came to the lecture of Religion, he kind of made fun of some parts of the Bible which were not true at all (because I have read the Bible and I know). I felt that my faith got disrespected. Anyways, the two exams were super easy you only need to study!
Take notes of the lectures because you will need them for the exams. Some topics are interesting while others were boring. The prof is alright, he prefers you to sit in the front to get the connection however I sat in the back and it did not affect my grade since I payed attention.
Professor Graves is a cool professor inside & outside of class really easy if you just show up and pay attention as his class consists of 2 exams (midterm & final), weekly quizzes from a free online textbook & 4 labs which were pretty annoying as you have to download a laggy software, but if you show up and pay attention it should be easy.
Adding on to the reviews below me.. for the weekly reading quizzes, you can just skim the content to find question answers (I didn't thoroughly read anything at all). I just used a pdf word scanner to find all of the question answers. Weekly labs are super easy, you're basically spoon fed the directions. Easy pass as long as you do everything.
Dr. Graves is a fantastic professor, he cares about making sure his students understand what the lectures are about. Free textbook that helps to study for midterm and final exam, his class is really easy as long as you show up to his class and try your best. We also had Labs which are pretty fun to do. He is very funny and open to help students.
Professor Graves puts in a lot of effort to make the class more interesting since many take this class as a GE. Even though the class mood is dead inside, he does all he can to keep us entertained and makes lectures at least be a good learning experience for the students.
Took Intro to Geography with him. The class was UNREASONABLY hard!! (Or at least way too hard for an intro level class). My friend and I dropped it during our second week because of this. So, avoid this class if you don't want to be reading 7-8 hours of geography per week. (not even including the lab)
i took this class fall 2020 online & he gives you weekly quizzes (unl time & 2 attempts) based on the textbook and lecture but theyre really easy if you search key words in the textbook.4 the final if you dont keep up with lectures get ready to spend a week watching all of them & reading the text. This class taught me so much im glad i took it.
This professor is passionate about geography and it shows in his presentation. Very funny and a pleasure to listen to. He provides a textbook for free to all of his students. The lectures are very important though and you will need to show up to class everyday. Unfortunate that COVID meant I could no longer attend in-person lectures. Recommend.
We were fine until the end of the semester, but the professor doesn't want to watch the students have high marks so at the end of the semester he decides to break us down in the final.
Took this class expecting an entry level Geography course but was hit with hand written tests that test your knowledge way beyond a beginner experience level. Worst part, tests are 60% of your grade so completing tedious assignments barely help keep you afloat. Get ready to read and watch YouTube videos for hours. I'd avoid if I could.
Dr. Graves is an incredible professor. He has a passion for Geography and it shows. His assignments are tough but he is always willing to help. The subject itself is boring but he makes it fun for sure.
professor Graves is the godfather of Geography department, he is such a character. I learned a lot from his class, he teaches you things that can be used to apply for jobs. great teacher.
Overall, I found GEO 101 to be a really interesting and informative class. The layout generally follows the same pattern every week: read the assigned chapter, take a reading quiz, and watch Dr. Graves' recorded lectures. The exams (3 of them) play a huge role in this course making up 60% of your overall grade so study and take them seriously!!!
v entertaining lectures a lot of reading quizzes and some labs, pretty time consuming but if you are proactive you can knock out the quizzes early 2 exams, if you study hard with the practice exams he provides you'll easily do well exams have a lot of lecture based questions so if you dont show up its harder, lectures are always recorded on zoom
He is extremely down to earth, he will answer any questions and is understanding to any personal problems.
Professor Graves has complete understanding of the course's material, gives interesting lectures, and is super down to earth.
He was such a really good professor and i would recommend because he would often joke around. Although the lectures got boring sometimes, they are mostly funny and he made it fun. You had to be there for the letures if you wanted to pass the class because lots of people did not show up and did horrible on the midterm and final. Overall really great
Took this class for granted honestly, his lectures were great & super interesting. I learned a lot. If you aren't there everyday, you'll miss things important for the midterm & final. He's a great teacher but do everything on time or you'll have a hard time later on in the semester as the assignments get locked & he won't open them all the time.
Get ready to be forced to remember a few hundred random facts and learn pure memorization while a teacher constantly reminds you that he "doesn't want you to memorize" and "wants you to actually learn the information instead of searching it up." A couple of marking maps completely blind and frequent quizzes makes this class pretty annoying.
I loved his class so much that I took Geog 107 2nd part. He is an amazing professor and was so easy to talk to. You get reading assignments every week at first; it's a lot, but it's manageable. The lectures he gives are useful for exams, and his exams are worth only 60% of your grade, but they are easy if you study. 10/10 best class,
Easy as long as you go to class.
Frustrating class. Takes it as a personal attack that people will not show up to his class even if attendance is not mandatory. Began taking attendance on and off mid semester and frequently showed his unprofessional nature and anger with people not attending. Class itself is easy, just read a thousand pages and memorize trivia
So petty… Takes attendance randomly and screws over your grade. If you miss class he takes it personal. Can't recommend at all.
Way too much work for a GE, this class was so intensive and unnecessary. If you like trivia take this class!!
Very easy class. Weekly quizzes and lab assignments every few weeks. Lectures can get boring since it is basically a repetition of the book, but still interesting. The midterm and final were relatively easy if you paid attention. I didn't study and got high scores on the final and midterm. He is respectful and cares about his students
He is an good professor. For an in person class attendance wasn't mandatory. Online homework, most are very time consuming but easy to do if you read all of the instructions. Both midterm & final are in person. Requires scantron to take both of the test. But as long you read instructions you should not have any difficulty on assignments and test
Genuinely cool guy and really knowledgable about his craft. Pretty hard concepts if you don't study but easy to understand later on.
