Great guy, I would take him again if I could. His tests were hard (65 avg), but the other class assignments balance them out and most people did well.
Steve Grupp is a great teacher whose enthusiasm for Geology makes all of his classes interesting and fruitful. I found all of his tests to be fairly easy, but to be fair, not everyone in my classes felt the same way. The field trips he organizes are by far the best part of taking a class with him.
real life comparisons make his class easier to understand but his tests are sometimes technical. pay attention and its easy to understand whats going on. A/B average
Didn't like the class, too many people to get a lot of help, and I was lost most of the quarter. I'm not the science person though...it might be better for you.

I admit this guy is passionate about something...his field...mabey, teaching...mabey. I got the feeling that he couldnt make it at some other application of his degree and hence took up teaching. A failed diamond prospector perhaps???
Its kind of a hard class but if you have a chance to go on a field trip to Mt St Helens cause its the bomb.com.
I know there have been positive comments - I have none. I took this online, and he didn't give us grades for weeks at a time - he made us take a mid-term on Memorial Day (didn't matter some we're out of town) and he shows a complete lack of courtesy in regards to letting us know his student's progress throughout the quarter. Lazy. Avoid him.
I found the course interesting enough.....and since it was an online course that was the only good thing about this class. The instructor (Grupp) was pretty much MIA the whole quarter....we would get our assignment at the beginning of the week and any other contact with the class was minimal. Grades were one of my biggest beefs....he wouldn't post
Online class with no help or feedback at all. Took forever to get grades back. Class average was 63, no extra credit allowed.
Horrible class, had open book tests which sound easy, but he made impossible by testing on nothing in the book just stuff from lectures as a trick to prove that oceanography was harder than we all thought. He had a total ego prob and little man syndrome. Field trip was boring and so was every class.
Took class online. Instructor was non-existent. You didn't know your grades till the end of the quarter. He wouldn't answer questions. Paid as much for online class as school attendees but got zero instructor help. What a joke. Avoid him.
Horrible 'teacher'. Fails to test the class on text book reading and material covered in the lecture. My labs where never fairly graded. I would find points missing but no marks to indicate how they where lost. Grades in whether or not your writing is legible, which is completely inane and nit-picky. Avoid at all costs.
Taken class online, prof non-existent and doesn't answer questions posted. The "lab" assignments in a non-lab online class is a joke since we have no supplies other than rocks. The average test score was 65 and after half the quarter, I still don't know my grade as he hasn't posted it. There is no lecture, so all learning is from the book, not him.
Grupp is a good teacher. As long as you show interest in learning he will show interest in teaching you. You have to actually go to class a pay attention to do well in his classes. Tests are very hard but as long as you study there is no reason you can't pull an A or B on every one of them. Field trips make this class awesome though, beautiful.
Steve is a great teacher even though he has way too many puns. I had him for Geology and Oceanography and I learned a lot from him in those classes and am definitely glad that I took them. His classes were always tons of fun!!! He was also a great advisor!
Great instructor, kind person. The field trip was the best part of the course. The tests involved a lot of memorizing, and were alright (besides sometimes nit-picking on grading). He works makes geology puns into his lectures. Great teacher!
i took the writing on the rocks course with steve and gary. over all i liked the class, i made a lot of new friends and the trip to mt. st. helens was fun. the teachers were ALWAYS available to help the students. while Steves lectures were boring as hell, you HAVE to attend them because they are whats on the test. i learned a lot.
Awesome guy. Quite a good teacher, if not at times disagreeable (especially if you're more religious). Total evolutionist, but has the outlook on it that you might as well enjoy life cause it's all you got. A nice guy, very smart and very into what he does.
Very interested in his subject, and is will to help anyone who asks questions. Tests are open book, and not too hard if you've taken notes from the lectures. You won't do well if you don't go to class, as you earn points during the class for video notes and other things. Very fun class overall.
One of my favorite teacher on campus. In class his lectures are very clear and he desirs to help students understand the concepts. Also a very nice person. But don't let him fool you, he can write some pretty hard open book tests so study up on understand concepts rather than facts written in the book. Asking him questions helps with this.
Great prof, very friendly and cares about his students. Lectures are thorough and he answers all the questions you may have. Labs help you understand concepts. His tests are the hardest I've ever taken at EvCC even with notes! I still got an A but had to definitely work for it.
He was a great guy outside of class and pretty fun. His tests are beyond difficult, they are ridiculous. I've never studied harder for a test in my life and yet I still got worse grades then I've ever received, even from chemistry. I would not recommend taking this teacher.
Great guy and great teacher. Is incredibly knowledgable about all of the subjects he teaches and is willing to help as long as you ask. His tests are incredibly hard, but even if you don't do well on them there are enough other grades in the class to keep your grade up nicely. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Tests are incredibly hard, but fairly cover the material discussed in class, the book, and on the syllabus. Pay attention closely, take good notes during the in class movies, and work dilligently on your labs and you will do fine, even if your test grades don't look great. I would take him again.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER! HE IS NOT THERE! NOR WILL HE BE AVAILABLE JUST LIKE YOUR GRADES! PROB A GOOD TEACH IN A CLASS BUT HORRIBLE AND MIA ONLINE! ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!! HES JUST COLLECTING A CHECK ON THIS ONE!
Overall this was my favorite class this quarter. I didn't think his test was hard but my score was bad so it must have been. The field trip was SO cold so deffinately layer and pack snacks for in your cabin and entertainment. you only get 3 meals a day. He was a very nice teacher I liked him!!
This teacher isn't very good. He waited until the end to grade everything. The class average is a D. I would not suggest taking a class with thi teacher.
This teacher rocks! You definitely need to be there for the labs and to take notes, because the test covers EVERYTHING. He does let you use your notes and your lab book, though. He uses slideshows for his lectures but really goes in-depth about the information. I just took the LC for the English credits but it ended up being my favorite class.
As long as you show up and fill out something for the Labs you will have an A, the field trip is super fun and his cabin is far away from the rest so you can have some late night festivities. The first test you will fail no matter how hard you study. You’ll go straight to a C in the class and fail the second test and get a C- in the class.
This teacher does not respect his students' time. We had no idea how were doing in the class until week 7 of a 10 week course. This teacher does not answer simple questions and does not respond to emails. Maybe things are different in a classroom but he was completely absent for the online class.
Steve is a great teacher! Regular attendance and labs make up half of the grade, so no need to stress on the tests. I averaged a B on the tests and yet I ended with an A in the class. He lets you bring your notes in on exams so take good notes. The field trip was a highilight in my quarter! I strongly sugest you take his class! It's a lot of fun!
I went from needing a lab credit to finding a passion. Steve is not a hold your hands kind of instructor. He gives an assignment and expects you to complete it. A very soft spoken, gruff when needed kind of guy. His class is a Learning Community concept class, if you don't show for class the best you can hope for is a C+.
Seems to me that Grupp is a great in-class instructor. However, I had the misfortune of taking his course on-line. I had a total of six e-mails that he ignored throughout the quarter and other members of my group had the same experience. His outline for the class never made sense and grades where never posted on time or at all.Donttake Grupponline!
I had Steve for geology which was a pretty easy class so then I took him for oceanography and HATED the class and his grading was MUCH harder. I recommend geology but not oceanography. Field trip at the beginning of the quarter is fun though.
Grupp doesn't appear very adept to teaching in an online format. His instructions were a constant confusion, he was hard to get a hold of, and as of the end of the quarter, there are still assignments that have not been graded and confusion about when and what the final is on. I can't speak for his in class instruction, but don't recommend online.
Steve is an excellent instructor who cares about his students. He can seem intimidating, but it is essentially that students communicate with him directly when they have questions or concerns. His tests are very involved. You absolutely NEED to study your material as well as read the questions carefully.
Steve is a wonderful guy. Test are hard, but he doesn't grade with a curve. Make sure to be there and ask questions. Lab normally isn't enough to finish in class. Took him for Geo and Ocn. Loved the trips! Lectures are LONG and pretty boring so have questions. Test are normally 50 ?s, have scantrons. Book is needed for Geo, helpful for Ocn.
Steve makes you earn his respect, but once you do this class can be fun regardless of the material. His labs are fun, but the lab worksheets are tedious to fill out. With regards to tests, they come directly from the book; I personally found no test related info from the lectures. Make sure to attend the field trip as it's an amazing experience.
Steve Grupp is probably one of the most confusing professor's I've had. It's obvious he really doesn't know how to work online format. His class are best for students who are very organized and don't procrastinate. Seems like a nice guy, but wouldn't really recommend him
He obviously isn't in tune with the whole online classroom format. Regardless of him not being clear on assignments, this was still a fairly easy class. Could I tell you anything I remember about Geology? Probably not. Did I get an A though? Heck yes I did. Seems like a nice guy, takes him a while to grade things though
I wish "slow grader" was a potential tag. Turn in a lab? Dude won't grade it for months. You'll need to read the textbook to survive, which isn't that bad of a demand. His lectures could be skippable if he didn't give 5 point assignments randomly. He mumbles so much he had to get a microphone for us to hear him. Sit near the front.
I loved Steve! He is the reason I ended up getting my BS in geology! He gives great advice on your major and what classes to take! All around great guy
Lab assignments are confusing. Tests (3) are difficult, have strict times/dates, and time constraints are tight. Tests are 50% of grade, one test score is dropped. Grades take up to four w20eeks. Group based class. All discussions, labs, and weekly reports are done on a group (up to 5 students) discussion board with no instructor interaction.
His weekly instructions are several paragraphs long and confusing/vague. The material itself is somewhat challenging, but having group work helps. He takes awhile to post grades and he doesn't allow you to see test answers after you've taken the test, which is annoying. He also doesn't give any personable feedback in your discussions.
Professor Grupp is a really difficult teacher and this was genuinely the hardest class I've ever taken. His assignments are not organized and he is very unclear about what he wants his students to do. His tests are unrelated to the textbook and the material mentioned in the class. He is really behind at grading assignments (so far 8 weeks behind)
geology 110/english 101 community class. All he does is lecture off his powerpoints. that's it for in class work. he lets you take copies of the powerpoints so you don't even need to show up to class. lots of field trips. labs are very confusing, won't give you any help. open note tests. did not learn anything. Only took the class for English 101
This course is harder than I thought and very time-consuming. There's no lecture or anything which helps me to understand the text so I have to find video and lecture on youtube! Tests are hard and irrelevant to the textbook. Don't take this course! Run!
I am currently taking him and i've never been so frustrated by the way the tests are created.
Grupp is very delayed in every sense of the word. Great guy who cares about his students but he's constantly behind when it comes to updating his students with clear and consice information for his course. I would try to find another educator.
Steve is a nice guy and has hilarious stories. However, he can get really boring with his lectures. He loves to see you in class, but everything he lectures on comes straight out of the book. The labs are time consuming and stupid. He's a wise old man that you really can't hate. Geology is dry by nature, but he interconnects and makes it relevant.
Lecturespersonal diatribe-Assignments lack clear instruction-Response to ?s at prof leisure if at all-All discussion/lab grades are group dependent(pick group wisely or pick up slack & earn grades for slackers)-Grades posted weeks after due,& 1/2 not at all before end of qtr.-Requests to review are deniedarbitrary final grade-Awful way to learn!
The guy takes forever to grade then gives you a poor grade with no reasoning. Worst online class I have ever taken.
He doesn't teach this class. You read the book and hope you get it. He sometimes responds to questions but don't rely on him. Tests are ridiculous and the grading is overly particular. Take a different science class.
Steve is a very nice guy who truly does care about his students. However, class/ lectures are extremely boring. Must rely on the book because he really doesn't teach from lecture(just tells random stories that don't relate to the subject at all.) field trip with the class was fun though in the beginning of the quarter and Exams are open notes!
The class is set up incredibly poorly - the entire class was confused the first week. It is almost entirely group projects, and if you're stuck with a bad group you're stuck with the work. He only grades twice a quarter, so you have to wait five weeks before you get any feedback. Poorly run online class. Frustrating groups.
Took an online class, was structured into groups so your grade is reliant on others work. didn't grade anything until the 4th to last week so we had no idea how well we were doing on the assignments. offers no extra credit. a good example of the worst kind of professor
He literally docks you points on assignments that seem to meet all of the criteria he asked for with no explanation why, and when I tried to reach out and ask for an explanation, my emails and calls were left unanswered. The whole setup of the class is extremely confusing, and I've taken many online classes before. Would not recommend.
Provides little to no explanation for when assignments are due, no clear guidelines, I was personally left confused throughout most of the course. He's a nit picky grader. He will make an assignment due on Sunday, but in the description of the assignment will say it's due a different day, so you don't even know you need to do it till it's too late!
There is no explanation on when assignments are due, and he never gives an explanation for the grade he gives. He doesn't teach the class, you are given 3 paragraphs of vague explanation at the beginning of the week. Don't take this class.
I took Grupp's class online. He's not very accessible offline/online, and his online format is a massive headache. I'd attempted numerous times to contact him, and he failed to email back. You don't know your grade or general progress most times, and it's quite unclear on what you're supposed to do. I strongly advise not to take his online course.
This course is the most frustrating due to incompetence on the professors part of a poorly constructed online class. The format is hectic, with vague weekly instructions that are located in two different modules. The midterms are only allowed to be taken within 24 hrs, the professor doesn't give feedback on grades, and grades very slowly.
If you're the type of student that checks their grade online, you'll be a bit irritated with Grupp. He's not the kind of teacher that posts grades regularly. But he is a fun teacher, and you're likely to enjoy the class.
Nice guy, genuinely tries to help but only after he makes sure you're actually struggling. consistently unclear and unreliable about grading, due dates, and is constantly changing the syllabus. never knew what date the 3 exams (open note, 50-70 questions, multiple choice and vague) were to be taken, changed literally last minute multiple times.
Test questions are worded horrendously, his slides contradict the book, and he bases the tests off the book. Avoid at all costs. Average test percentages 64, 62, 62. Does not curve. I worked my ass off and still didn't get an A.
The whole class is only group projects. No independent projects. Yes online group projects. No one ever helps or on at the same time. You lose points for having certain conversations with group suchas asking how everyone is doing. He never answers emails. Very stressful. The projects are really hard. If you hate group projects dont take this class.
Steve is a nice guy who does want to help as long as you ask questions. There are a lot of long lectures so be sure to ask anything thats confusing. But, hes a really slow grader, so you might be irritated with that. Also, be sure to read the book and take good notes as that will really aid you on the tests. Overall - not bad, for in-class.
OL section. TL;DR: don't take this. Heavy reading load (which is OK, should be expected). Grupp is nice and knowledgeable. Labs are easy. But class is almost 100% group work (except tests) and you're expected to pick up the slack for group members. Doesn't grade on time, rarely gives feedback, barely answers emails. VERY frustrating and stressful.
EVERYTHING IS GROUP WORK! Your entire grade is dependent on extensive DB posts, 2 midterms and a final. He's a super polite man who has no idea how to run an online class. If you ask for help he will be polite and useless. I had a friend end up in the ER and ask for an extension and he told her to drop the class. Again, nice man horrible proff.
Professor Grupp has created a non-dynamic Geo course in which every assignment or commentary is automated, nothing seems customized-making his lessons impersonal and his expectations rushed. He also has one hour time limits for 60 question tests and doesn't let you see what you got wrong. Reading is heavy, and tests are scrupulous.
The Canvas classroom was the worst organized one I've ever seen, and the assignments made no sense. Should have been very easy work, but I ended up quitting the class because I was so frustrated. Doesn't explain things very well at all. I didn't get any grades back until halfway through the quarter when it was too late to do anything about it!
This class does not seem terribly difficult, but the teacher is HORRIBLE! By the end of week 7 of the quarter none of us know what our grade is. He has only graded two out of 10 items, one being the midterm. Multiple students have reached out because there appear to be grading errors on the midterm. The teacher has not replied to any one!
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Steve Grupp lacks any ability to be a teacher and absolutely refuses to respond to student questions or grade our work. In week 8, there were only 2 things graded. Talk about stressful! Tests are picky and ask for such tiny details, some of it not even found in the book. How this guy a teacher?
Grupp is impersonal and has not updated his online material in years. Most "lectures" are copied and pasted from previous classes i.e. Dates are not changed. He does not grade in a timely manner. Do not expect feed back from your grades even if you reach out to him asking. The class itself is interesting, just don't expect an engaged instructor.
Very little direction or feedback, even when requested. Participation matters. Material is interesting, but the assignment directions were unclear. By the last week of class, only the tests and first couple assignments had been graded.
Almost no feedback and assignments are very confusing and have a lot of unneeded information without any useful information. I checked and pretty much the entire class is confused each week, which suggests its an instructor problem. I read the reviews here before taking the class and just figured it was lazy students, but nope. Bad class.
The worst class I've taken in my life. Doesn' grade ANYTHING till the last couple weeks of class, isn't clear on assignment details, grading is wack and doesn't communicate with students. I tried to reach out to get help in the class multiple times and never heard back. Trust me when I tell you, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Ugh. The textbook is fairly interesting. The teacher is completely absent and refuses to communicate. The class is split into groups and if someone in your group drops the ball, you are punished along with everyone else - of course you won't know that until Week 9 when he finally grades the first group project (there are 10). WHY is he like this?
I have never had to rate a professor before, but feel that it is my duty to let future students know about this class. We are on week 10 of the quarter, and he has just started grading assignments from week 2 and 3. This is not ok! His tests are incredible difficult and the material on his tests do not necessarily match up with the reading. Beware!
Dont take this prof. Whatever you do just dont. I emphasize everything that everyone else said. Doesnt stay up to date with grading, super heavy ready, hard tests, participation heavy. I needed a lab science to graduate and I should have just taken Chem or Bio, thats how awful this class was. Hes also impossible to get ahold of for questions.
Online lab science classes are hard to come by, but do yourself a favor and pick a different one. Tests are incredibly hard and questions are obscure. Participation and lab points are group based and if your group drops the ball you have to pick up the slack to get your points. Takes forever to grade assignments. Slow response to emails.
A lot of the bad ratings for Steve are for his online classes but I took his geology class in person and absolutely loved it! There was a fantastic field trip to Mt. St. Helens which was the extra credit opportunity during the quarter. I failed almost every test and still got a solid grade because Steve genuinely cares if you do good.
To preface, I am a non-science major. The class wasn't that bad, just long and dragged on in some places. Grupp speaks slowly and doubles back a lot, and not always where he should. He takes a while to grade, not all of the assignments on Canvas, some of the analogies he uses are borderline offensive, and he's slow to respond outside of class.
His grading policy has way too many hoops to jump thru; there's no structure or way to know what's going on. You are put into groups early on and are told to talk your tongue off just regurgitating the textbook. He only cares about the work, he doesn't care if you learn. Be prepared to teach yourself-- there was no actual instruction.
Dont take his class, do yourself a favor and avoid him , and his lackluster teaching style, he doesnt teach anything, and he cares more for his tenure it seems. My grade per his weak grading scale has fallen to the toilet and he refuses to answer all forms of contact. No grade for my midterm 27 days ago and another in a week, Avoid his class.
Yesterday was the final day of class. Half of all the assignments for the class have still not yet been graded. It is hard to tell what our final grades will even be. This is a stress that students should not have to go through. This professor is completely absent from the class, and assignments are outdated and confusing at best. Please avoid!
Prior to taking this class, I was very worried due to the reviews. I think many are misleading and I actually really enjoyed this class. As long as you do the weekly readings and participate you will do great. This class is heavily graded on participation so make the effort to collaborate. Only 3 exams and the lowest grade gets dropped.
WOW, PLEASE DONT TAKE A CLASS WITH PROF GRUPP. Dear Lord it was terrible. 0 communication, 0 teaching, 0 help. Thankfully weekly discussions were easy, but the tests are nearly impossible, and are based off of the most minute details in the textbook. He legit taught nothing, but assigned ungodly amounts of reading each week. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
I think this class shouldn't be an online class. Pretty much each week just read from the textbooks. Everything is graded at the end . The whole time didn't know what my grade was going to be. We were only in groups the whole time, and communicated with one another.
Steve is a great teacher and cares about his students. His lectures are long, but I found them and his stories interesting. We can use our lab and written notes during our exams. As long as you paid attention and took notes, the exams were easy. We are also able to bring in a hard drive and get the PP slides. The labs were interesting and not hard.
Besides exams, you're graded entirely off group work. You pick groups at the very start of the quarter and are stuck with them. If your group member submits something for your group that you don't agree with, doesn't matter. I emailed and told him I was unhappy with what my group submitted because I didn't want to get penalized. Didn't even reply.
Individual work in this class is not a thing even if you disagree with your groups answers. Besides the exams, your work is graded off of a group submission, but you are stuck with the group of people for the whole quarter and it can be hard to all communicate when we are all running off of different schedules but he doesn't seem to care. Dont take
buy your book through the bookstore! book and lab are bundled together. Read heavy and quiz happy. no communication no zooms, no testing prep. Group work is hades if you have slackers who do last minute. I love geology but I will wait til uni to take more classes.
I would not recommend taking this class ever. Honestly a horrible instructor with an even more horrible organization of his course. Too much content, too much unnecessary information, and too much reading even for a college student. I would personally avoid him and any of his classes ever.
Terrible.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had, multiple times I asked him to explain something to me and his response was "you should just know". We were analyzing samples of rocks in order to determine what they were, and I had an improper sample. He rarely answers questions in class, rather giving a round-about answer that doesn't explain anything.
doesnt teach or answer questions, jist reading and random labs, and gave my group a zero for 'no submission' when we submitted the completed assignment so he had to change it. late grader and doesnt care about your grade or test scores as long as you learn something
He was unresponsive. The whole class is heavily dependant on what you do in your group. You can't take a break from this class between discussion participation and weekly assignments you must get on everyday of the week. The instruction is confusing, nobody knew what to do and our questions were not answered. Maybe it's better in person bad online.
His lectures are long and wandering. Textbook assignments are confusing. He is unable to adequately answer questions in class and is completely unaccessible outside of class. He never answers emails. His tests are extremely difficult. I spent about 12 hours studying for each exam and the best score I ever received was a C. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
He is very slow to grade assignments. It takes him a while to respond to emails, quickest response I got was 3 days. Total of 3 big tests, lots of questions on the midterms weren't talked about in class or in the reading. Everything is done and graded in groups, The whole course is unorganized and confusing, and he isn't very helpful.
I haven't gotten too far into the class yet, but I already regret my choice. He doesn't respond to emails. The canvas is so disorganized that it takes five years to figure out what you are actually supposed to do. HEAVILY dependant on your group to do well and participate. NO GRADING SECTION. So you will live in mystery the whole time. DONT DO IT.
Long Lectures, Labs are fun, Talks off topic a lot. Lots of group discussions, and video discussions on canvas. Most assignments were easy just long and time consuming.
Not super clear instruction and a good amount of group work that lasts the entire quarter.
Mr. Grupp is a great guy to talk to, but his communication regarding class expectations/assignments is VERY unclear. You're expected to form groups at the beginning of class and you will stay with that group the entire time to do labs and discussion boards. You're expected to take lots of textbook notes, but they don't help you much on the test.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Steve is a good guy but super unclear instructions, horribly unorganized canvas, assignments are confusing, random deadlines, forces group work, had to reach, and no plan for the quarter. He explains how difficult his exams are and then gives us no guidance. Had to watch a 3 hour long lecture and write notes.
Do. Not. Take. I can not stress this enough. I was pretty sure the people in these reviews were beign harsh and went with this professor anyways. That was such a big mistake. He only does group work, so your entire grade depends on who are pared with. We are five weeks into the quarter, and the only thing he as graded is week one.
Avoid this class if possible - it's heavily dependent on group work, with unclear instructions and little professor support. Try using Unstuck AI for study prep to get through it.
