Not a nice guy wanted to kick me out becuase my papers kept getting better?&
He's really not as bad as everyone says. He really just wants students to do the assignments and do NOT turn in assignments late. Attendence is a must!
Loves to kick everyone out of class. Has spaz attacks. You definatly cant miss his class.
Too intelligent for his own good. Emotional wreck that he brings to class every day. Comes off as a tough guy, but really nice once out of class. Can ramble.
He kinda goes off on tangents sometimes and he's a real jerk at grading
The true definition of what a professor should be.This guy will alter your thinking, which is a rarity in classrooms these days.He rubs people the wrong way because he's honest.Students today don't want to be challenged and feel threatened when they are.
If you are serious about learning, this is your man. He will push you to think about things in a different way. This is college. If you are not ready for the college experience, then drop his class or quit whining about how tough it is.
Great guy, very entertaining. But super hard!! If you need an "A", switch. If want to have some fun, Stay. He's a toss up.
Has a massive amount of passion for and knowledge of early American lit and of life, and what the two have to do with one another. His class will and should change your life. Who cares what grade you get!?
Never come late! I think alot the grade is if he likes you, so definately pay attention in class and always answer questions or make comments about the stories. Definately not an easy A, or B for that matter-you must work for it. Otherwise, he is energetic and funny in class. You can always drop!
Hamelman is a good guy with too many issues. He brings his own couch to class and rants about controversial topics for the entire hour. But his passion is monumental and I admire him greatly.
His grading is very weird on essays. If he likes you , you get a better grade. Always go to class and try not to be late, he will call you out sometimes. The class is very interesting though.
If you are greek do not take him he will fail you He must have had a bad time when he was in college with the greek system.
I think students have a problem with him because he challenges the way they think.Sure, he can ramble and be kind of rude, but he makes you question things beyond American lit.I greatly admire his passion.Take him.If nothing else, it will be enlightening.Dont be late,he will fail you. It's rude anywa

A brilliant minded proffesor, who is definetly in the wrong line of work, he's to ecentric for his own job...great guy, non biased down to earth, but a little hard, maybe a bit to hard...
Dont expect an easy grade! Although one of the most difficult classes I have taken at Coastal, it was one of the most rewarding! He is passionate about what he does and shares this with his students. Although a little odd, very interesting! Take this class if you want to leave the class with more than just a grade. Dont be late! Discuss! Work hard!
He's not a cake walk, no. And he IS eccentric. But hey, I admire him, he liked me, and I still have a crush on the guy. Seriously, I loved his passion and his manor, and he's exactly the kind of English professor I want to be. He's my favorite prof.
Hard teacher, but fun! You get more out of the class than just a typical english class!
Hey, what can I say? I love the man. He's passionate and eccentric, he knows his literature, and if you pay attention you'll understand why he gets that mischevious look he sometimes does. I'd take another class with him in a hearbeat.
I may have gotten an A, but this man has issues. Unless you are willing to sacrifice yourself to his schizophrenic rantings, stay away and spend your time and money on something worthwhile. He taught me nothing I couldn't read in the textbook - Unless you count the lesson in how to deal with a self-important and often ill-prepared prof.

cool guy, not so great teacher. Half the time, didn't even talk about things relevant to the class.
great
I absolutely love this man!! If you go to class and read, you will make a good grade. He has so much passion and it comes through in his class! LOVE HIM
Not a good teacher or person
This dude sucks prolly the absolute worst teacher i have ever had
hilarious guy, he makes his class interesting....good teacher if you study. moody but get on his good side and you will be fine.
This guy is awesome...made english class so much fun! Just get to know him on a personal level...go to his office, ask questions, show that you care and you'll end the class with flying colors :) def take him he's awesome
I love him. The best and my most favorite teacher ever. His tests are hard, but it is worth it just to sit in class and listen to how passionately he teaches his subject!
one of the smartest teachers at coastal. you leave the classroom feeling smart, and you WILL learning something new everyday. he can be mean, and can make you feel stupid, but it's worth it. loves questions and participation. must attend class and do the readings. i think he could teach every subject at coastal bcuz he knows a lot about EVERYTHING
really smart and definitly knows what he's talking about. he can be kind of scary at first but you'll love the class by the end. gives a lot of reading but is a pretty easy grader - as long as you read and go to every class you'll do fine
He blew my mind. I now love literary criticism.
prof. hamelman is the BEST!
AMAZ-ING!! If given the chance, you MUST take him. Is kinda intimidating at first, but this man knows his stuff! And he truly cares about his students. Dont leave Coastal without giving him a try.
This is a great professor who really cares about his students. His class was pretty easy and he explained everything clearly. I would def. take one of his classes again.
He's intimidating at first, but if you give him and the class a chance you'll get something out of it. He's really a great teacher.
Has way to many issues wich he brings to class. If he doesnt care for you, then ur probably not gonna make it. Not a big fan of football players or greeks. Makes you hate the attendance policy and with him there is no such thing as an excused absence. If your late you might as well stay home.
RUN for your life, this man is crazy seriously. He has so many issues and believe me you will hear about them, his grading is so random. He has favorites and if your not one of them you will not survive...Again run for your life the man is crazy!!!
He comes off intimidating, but he truly is a pussycat. He is passionate about his subject and all he truly wants is for everyone to read the material that is assigned. Speak up in class, show that you read the essays and you will do fine. Don't ever miss a class, though, he is BIG on attendance. Read, listen, speak up, and you will do fine.
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had in my life. He is boring and always gave you a feeling of your worthless. I have made at least a B on all the English classes I can ever rememember taking. I had to retake his class because he gave me a D+ when I really did try and do the work. Awful, do whatever you have to do to not take him!!
Do Not take this man! All his is going to do is bore you with his life stories and problems. And he NEVER goes over the material on the test! You have to id quotations and write short answers and a full length essay! That he never went over! I hated this class! This is the worst class I have ever taken in my college career!!!!!!!
This guy is a jerk. I had A's on everything and he gave me a B because he said he reserves 10% of the grade for his own opinion. I don't think he liked the fact that a science major could write FAR better than his beloved English majors. Unbelievable. What a jerk. I really dislike English professors now. Avoid his classes at all costs.
This guy is a horrible professor
Well he is a cool guy i guess, nothing bad to say, but not very predictable... i have to take his class again, and i will take it with him, because that is the type of thing that pisses him off...
He was very disrespectful towards me and stereotyped me right off the bat. I knew he did not like me for a stereotypical reason and I tried to be nice to him and get extra help but he was just a jerk. Dont take this guy for class, you get NOTHING out of it
Dude is nuts, but class is fun once you realize that.
Really great teacher. Awesome, smart daughter!
I took this guy a long time ago- just wanted to comment. Wrote a paper he did not agree with. The irony was the paper was to make a point I didn't agree with either. His anger was obvious with his comments to me during a meeting we had. NOT a teacher- but someone trying to sell more books....
Not bad, kind of funny.
I have taken three classes with Dr. Hamelman including one independent study. I will be the first to tell you the classes are hard, but you will never forget what you learned. Sometimes classes and assignments are confusing, but Dr. Hamelman will go out of his way to help. If you are there to learn, take Dr. Hamelman's class. You won't regret it.
okay, he's a mad man. and not in the good way. he made two girls in my class cry and insulted my family heritage. he expects each student to agree with him and if you don't then he will argue with you and give you a low grade. he needs a tranquilizer.
This Guy is Crazy, do not take him. Nine students did not read a couple of stories and he made a ten question quiz on it and then the next class period goes on and on about it. Then in the last five minutes gives another quiz, half of its worth being the stories nine out of twenty students did not read.
Dr. Hammelman is a good proffessor who knows his stuff but he is also tough. You must read (not skim). If you do not read, he will know and will point it out. He also calls you out if you're late or miss class. His tests and papers are confusing, it's sometimes hard to determine what he wants. Very smart, though, and will make you a better student.
if you don't want to talk about literary elements and devices but how they are relevant and actually matter, take hamelman. if you call him crazy, you're close minded and incompetent.
God Forbid you don't kiss this man's feet! He is unreasonably difficult and concieted. All the while attempting to veil his conciet with a thin sheet of false kindness and aptitude for fairness. In perspective, I received straight A's in all of my 400 level English classes this semester, except his theory class, in which I recieved a C+.
Hands down in my time at Coastal, he was the worst professor that I ever had. I was not the best student either, I can admit that. But he did not give any help to any students. Any one asking a question was met with scolding looks and what he sees as his Superior intellect...do not waste your time
Absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. Fails students just because he doesn't like them, and hated me because I registered for his class 2 days late. Never gave me a fair chance to catch up, and if you didn't agree with him in a paper, it's an automatic fail.
I took Dr. Hamelman for several English classes back in the late 90s and I have to say that I absolutely adored him! He was very hard and passionate but I liked him so much that I asked him to be my advisor. He truly inspired me to be a better student and I will never forget that. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take him.
Dr. Hamelman is the best professor in the English Department. His classes are rigorous and you MUST be ready to work. His expectations are high, but by no means are they unreasonable. Take his classes if you want to graduate having actually learned something. Without his classes to prepare me, I probably wouldn't be surviving my graduate program.
Hamelman is probably the hardest english teacher you could have for 102. He expects a lot out of every student, in order to get a decent grade you need to work very hard. If your not up to that I suggest you change teachers.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about his field. Likes great music too!
He is a very strict teacher who demands a lot from his students. Kind of negative in his views, vague in his instructions, but always has office hours, take advantage of them.
Had Hamelman as a professor and an adviser. Found him to be completely arrogant, impossible to deal with, unwilling to help his students and annoyingly condescending. I will never take his classes again. It's not about how hard it is... i work hard. And he knows what he is talking about, he just wont actually TEACH it. He just makes fun of you.
Arogant teacher who is very difficult. He insults your intellengence if you dont know certain things about English. You will have to work if you want to pass his class. Dont take him. There are easier Eng teachers around.
Prof Hamelman is not easy by any means, but if you want to get anything out of your college education, take him. He is one of the most intelligent and interesting professors that teaches at this University and I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn. My American Lit taught me more about my country than I ever expected to know.
Way too hard! He believes essays should be written perfectly in one day. I wish I would have known how hard he was before I REENTER 102 for the 2nd time. However, he is very intelligent and explains the stories well.
Very intellectual and knows a lot about English. He treats his students as if they are English majors and grades papers that way. Even if you feel your paper is a A, he most likely will give you a C. I would not advise taking his class.
Hamelman is a great teacher, but he tends to get off topic. He has a poor attitude when a student does not appear to take the class seriously, but is otherwise a lot of fun. I enjoyed his class and learned a lot. I plan to take him again.
Informative and very smart, but he made me cry during class during a discussion about college stuednts and their bleak futures.
While he ended up teaching me some lifeskills I needed to learn, he really brought me down with his constant, depressing jabs about things that didn't seem to have anything to do with the class. I like professors, that give me a positive feeling when I leave the room. I know college isn't happy-rainbow-time, but I don't want to be depressed.
Most knowladgeable teacher i have ever had
Supremely intelligent and has high expectations. This is college, folks. You're not on the playgound any more. You want your teachers to stretch your limits. What's learning without challenge?
He is highly intelligent. Quite personally, I rather enjoy his occasional rant. He sometimes goes on tangents, but they ALWAYS relate to the text in some shape or form. He will undoubtedly make you a better college student. Do NOT just read to learn and memorize, you need to devour the texts he assigns in order to pass this class - Take Seriously.
He believes in autodidactism, meaning he just functions as a source of knowledge. His lectures are not typical, although still interesting. Reading the content is a 100% due to his obscure Exam questions. While his Exams are extremely difficult he does tutor/help outside of class, if you approach him. Chance for revision. 100% attendance=extra pts.
A Ranter, but very smart. A little conceited at times. Never stays on topic and will totally change your syllabus around! My class only did about 3 or 4 assignments actually on the syllabus. The rest he thought of himself and we just winged it. Class was boring but not hard, but make sure to read the assigned books!
Hamelman is definitely a "love or hate him" professor. There seems to be no in between. However, all of the people complaining about difficulty missed the point in the first place. Hands down best professor I have ever had. Listens to awesome music, too.
Hamelman is the best teacher I have ever had. Test are straight from his lectures, so take notes on what he says. Gave group exam for our class, which really helps your grade.
Hamelman is the worst professor of all time. He is useless. He is not an educator, he is a tyrant. Sure he's smart, but how fun is being smart if you can't teach? He's narrow minded. Claims to be a broad thinker, drops if u miss one class before the withdrawl period. HATE him.
The best teacher I've had. Most intimidating person I've ever met, but if you get a good grade in his class you earn it. He teaches more than just English, he teaches about life. An honest grader & teacher. If you ever need critiqueadvice throughout your college & grad career, he's the man. Crazy as hell but I've learned more from him then anyone.
Intelligent, arrogant, and probably in more dire need of a personal servicing than any other white man on campus.
Hamelman is a great professor. He's strict, and you must be mature in your understanding of whatever he's teaching. Don't complain about the complexity of the material or the discussions- what you take from them is largely your responsibility. Don't miss class.
Probably my favorite undergrad professor I've had, also one of the most challenging, but in the best ways. You will definitely get your money's worth with him. You will not get an easy A in any of his classes, but you will learn a lot if you make the effort to read the materials and engage in the class.
Hamelman is by far one of the most arrogant men I have ever come across as. His opinion is always right, even when analyzing something. Has huge expectations for students, even in a 101 class. Does not teach, and expects you to teach yourself. Would not recommend taking his class.
Incredibly intelligent, but with unrealistic expectations of students. The amount of reading that he gives between a Tuesday to a Thursday is impossible to manage if you're taking any other courses. Harsh grader, won't tell you what you did wrong. Does not post grades. DO NOT MISS CLASS
DO NOT MISS CLASS
He talks SO. MUCH. Hes incredibly intellectual, but if you ask him a question, he will talk for 15 minutes about something that has nothing to do with the original issue. Few grades, so slipping up on one assignment will put you in a hole. DONT MISS CLASS!
Dr. Hamelman is often condescending towards students who ask questions, expressing personal opinions about literature as fact. He does not progress through the material in-class, and is constantly off-pace. I have taken two of his classes, ENGL 305 and 306, and am not impressed. This professor does not engage students intellectually.
Hamelman is by far one of the hardest professors I have ever had in my academic career. He sets very high standards and he expects you to maintain your momentum as a student. There is a LOT of reading for this class and you MUST read it all, otherwise, you will not pass the class. The man is very intelligent and I have a ton of respect for him.
Nice guy wants is students to succeed, but makes you work for it. Not a lot of grades so papers are big. Keep up on readings, get engaged in class, and go to office hours
Im a very good writer, normally get A's on all of my papers- received nothing better than a 75 on all of my write ups.
He's very intense and really cares about what he teaches. His grading on his papers, which are very few, is really hard. He doesn't expect you to write how you've been taught. He wants you to write in his style. He presents his opinion as fact and if you don't agree with him, he will say that you are wrong. But the topics he covers are interesting.
you have to do two reading outside of class a week and then badges every other week. most classes are him talking about things that don't really seem to teach you anything. for papers to get a good grade you have to go to office hours!!
Hes a nice guy and tries to work with you through office hours but grades harshly on quizzes and essays.
He grades extremely hard to the point there no coming back hes a good teacher but if you want to pass classes dont take him.
Hes horrible, the lecturers have nothing to do with anything hes teaching and hes unclear with most things hes trying to say. He picks on certain students and thinks he knows everything even if hes wrong + very opinionated about EVERYTHING.
I have had the pleasure of having multiple classes with Dr. Hamleman, and after every course completion-- I am left with newfound vigor and knowledge. In English 305, he made sure that we grasped key-- concepts of American Literature, and his assignments on top of his class lectures reinforced meaningful gems. This class is a foundational block --
Literally nothing but lectures, but they have nothing to do with what you'll see on essays and exams. Nitpicks essays, even when there are very unclear guidelines. Very opinionated and feels his point of view is always right, even if it is an opinion. WORST professor at Coastal.
Professor Hamelman was one of my first professors in college. He was overall a great and wholesome person. Sometimes his directions in class dont make a lot of sense so make sure you pay attention during his class. He doesnt give you a lot of assignments and you only have to write like four papers the entire semester including the final paper.
I really disliked Hamelman. He isnt boring by any means, but his class is horrible. He takes his opinion as fact and is extremely tough with grading. Lectures are pretty irrelevant too, but hes fun to talk to. Bad professor but interesting guy. Took me roughly 13 hours to read all required readings for the class. Lots of controversial content.
Professor Hamelman transformed me from an awful writer to a decent writer. Yes, his classes are boring and don't really make sense, but if you can manage to get through them and listen to what he is trying to explain, it can help your papers. He is very easy to talk to, even though he seems grumpy, and he really will help you if you ask.
Dr. Hamelman is one of the most passionate teachers I've ever had. As someone who doesn't like writing essays, I still enjoyed coming to class and learning from his lectures. He grades extremely tough for an intro level course but anyone majoring in English should 100% take his class. I would compare him to Yoda but for English.
I do not even know where to start with Hamelman. He is all over the place. His lectures make no sense. Phones are not permitted in this class. Neither is using the bathroom. He grades extremely hard and is not reasonable at all. He does give feedback on some assignments which is a plus. Nice man and all but definitely worst teacher I have ever had.
Professor Hamelman frustrated me quite a bit. His lectures were all over the place, he graded tough, and he rarely gave any in-class time to work on the papers that were assigned in his class. He seemed opinionated, and his lectures added little value to the class. On the other hand, he was very entertaining and made the class somewhat enjoyable.
A super funny and smart guy! His lectures can be chaotic, but what he talks about almost always ties back to the material somehow. All of the assignments were writings, and he is a tough grader, but is willing to help if you reach out. You MUST attend class and do the readings, or you won't pass. He ties some great music into his lessons too!
I cannot emphasize this enough, do not take this class. The lectures are completely irrelevant to any work in this class, he presents his opinion as fact, he'll tell you if your interpretation is wrong but then will say he can't say for sure what's right. He will adjust your grade according to his feelings and won't tell you.
Passionate, overall great teacher. He shows tough love.
Dr Hamelman is very bizzare. Has a unique way of teaching- its more like a huge conversation rather than anything structured. He is very compassionate deep down but he is very intimidating when you first meet him. At first he makes his class seem like its going to be so hard but just do the reading and participate in discussion and youll be fine
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! All of his grading is based on his opinion, and if you don't interpret the information the way he does, then you are wrong. None of the lectures match up with the readings and tests; he just rambles on and on for the whole class. I am a note-taker in all of my classes, and this one, there was NOTHING for me to take notes on
Dr. Hamelman is one of the most interesting professors I've had. His lectures are like a conversation and his courses are chaotically organized. He expects you to read and understand everything discussed in class, BUT once you get to know him he is so caring and will help you whenever you need it. Funny, passionate, and respected.
Teaching style is all over the place and very hard to follow
Dude is crazy. Lots of work, Chaotic lessons that aren't related to work. He grades on his own opinion.
I personally would not take this prof again. He was not very understanding when it came to missing class, even if you had a valid reason. He also did not have a set schedule of test, quizzes, or even assignments and he often rambles about everything which gets confusing at times. Oh, and don't pull pout your phone he might have a conundrum.
His teaching style can be considered scatterbrained. He often rambles, but he uses the rambling to engage the students in reacting. Keep in mind, "He is YOUR AUDIENCE" when it comes to writing. Pay attention to the poems and short stories, don't get ahead of yourself, and utilize the writing center. Attendance is mandatory. Try not to miss class!!
Hamelman's class is challenging, but interesting if you're willing to put in the work. The lectures can be hit-or-miss, but Unstuckstudy helped me prep for the tough essays. Attendance is a must - don't skip class!
I actually can't believe this class was even real. This class made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Straight lectures of him just rambling about Wall Street and his political views. He clearly was not there to teach but to voice his opinion and tell you you're dumb if you disagree. There was also no grading system. Grades her entirely his opinion
Would never take again, very lecture heavy and he seems a little crazy. He also did not work well witj DAS
If you prefer a professor to talk the whole time over read off slides he is for you. Very unorganized and has a hard time being on track. I was always engaged, but participating is hard because he always shuts down peoples opinions (and argues why he is right.) Make sure you read EVERYTHING assigned BEFORE class because you will be randomly tested
He's a good guy but makes a horrible professor. Incredibly boring readings and unstructured lectures. The lectures are also painfully boring. He goes off on weird, random tangents. I was scared to ask questions because he's very harsh and blunt. Does he even like being a teacher? Idk. You will not like him if you want an easygoing and relaxed class
