very good, but alittle boring, material is interesting and there are alot of group discussions and there are work online, and only 4 essays, the 4th is the final
Greatest english class ever. Very interesting material if you like social analysis and technology. Grades really easy. its just that you have to post stuff on days you'd rather not think of school.
interesting topics, reading material than compared to other english classes, grades fairly easy, lots of internet postings and discussions, mainly thinking, and not much solo work,
Good teacher with good material to work with. Take him and you won't regret it. Also it's interesting to know that his brother is the basketball coach for UCLA
howland's class was the best experience i had during my 2 years at de anza. he's witty, and his obvious passion is infectious. if there is no energy in the class, he'll just call it a day. interesting subjects and a smart teacher.
He is very picky in grading, I think. Yes, essays are about technical stuff such as stock, Internet...Text is fine, not so bad, but not very interesting. But that's English class. The good thing is that you can learn from classmates by posting online.
He is fair although has preconceived ideas on what essays should look like. (Definitely no room to come up with any of your own ideas.)Also loves to tear essays apart without offering any positive feedback which can leave you feeling a little belittled. I
Can someone tell me if he requires you to do alot of in-class reading? sometimes? always?
I have no idea how he grades the papers. Just takes off points for no reasons. He vows you so much, and takes off points just like that. He does not even tell you what you did wrong.
Steve is one of the BEST English professors at De Anza. However, his class is full of work. There are weekly assignments, weekly discussions, weekly homework, and a total of 4 essays. All in which is very interesting. BUT, prepare to WORK YOUR ASS OFF!:P
Steve Howland is a very unique teacher. He has an interesting curriculum and the reading arches from classic fiction to contemporary analysis. He's quirky, but has a passion for the subject. Only four essays to write in the class. Very accessible.
He is a very nice and fair instructor. Prepared to work to get an A!
This class is NOT easy if you have trouble writing a paper because this class is basically all about critical thinking & knowing how to write. I highly recommend this course if you like technology and like to talk about controversial issues.
He is a nice and smart guy. The grading is fair. I actually learnt a lot from his class even though the text is not easy. This class really helps you to think critically and you will definietly learn things form it.
Pretty good teacher. Would take him for another course. Good thing is his assignments aren't too easy or too hard. For you damn cheaters and slackers, I hope you rot in hell in his class. Great teacher.
He is a very smart guy as well as very helpful. I learned alot from his class. There is quite alot to read, but it is interesting and if the reading content is hard he will take the time to explain it in class.
Mr. Howland is a very nice and intellegent teacher, but he has a hard time holding the class's attention. Class consists of tons of reading, most is interesting, but the actual class puts me to sleep. He is very helpful and is patient when you need help.

Be prepared to fight to stay awake in his class. He doesn't keep your attention and will go off on unrelated topics throughout class. I learned more from my fellow students than this teacher. His grading system makes no sense at all. If you're interested in English, go to another teacher.
It was so hard for me at the beginning! tons of readings and thinking, the topics are very specific which throw me off sometimes. Afterall, I learned a lot and gained an A! I have really worked my ass offffffff!!!phew~ be prepare to work but it worths. Not a hard grader!
first few days of class may turn u off,but stay n u'll realize that howland's 1 of the best teacher in deanza.he's helpful, friendly, funny, though kinda weird at times teehee..but he's awesome!he grades fairly so i can't really say he's a lenient grader.i love his class and enjoy it thoroughly!tons of reading btw,but manageable, esp if u lyk to read=)
He is very good teacher. There are lot of reading in his class, but you got more. His grade is easy if you pay attention in this course.
took his distant learning class. easy enough.. what i love about this DL class is that you can focus on other classes more.. unlike in-class english courses where you have to spend countless hours listening to the teacher lecture about bs. all you have to worry about is writing essays and weekly journals. that's it.
Great Teacher! Excellent format and the readings are very interesting! He grades fairly and you learn a lot! Perfect opportunity to learn EWRT for upper division classes!
really cool teacher, hes really laid back.
There are 4 papers to do. all take home. There was no mid-term, surprise quiz or test. Just weekly reading, class discussion(almost every class), online posting of topic questions. First 3 papers are not that hard, its mostly 1A stuff. but the final is long and may be tough for some. got a A-. cool.
The worst teacher ever, boring and did not know what he was teaching. Very bias.
Real nice teacher!!!give comments for improvements and if he feels you can do much better than what you have submitted, he'll give you the chance to rewrite!!he's kind and a good grader! take him!!
I really enjoyed this class. The professor is passionated about his job and try to share it.Sadely,Students were boring, they did not actively participate and joined the fusion.Strangely,Mr H is self feeding with student's essays. He is craving to know whats going on in your mind.No secret anymore with the "club" essay,he knows who you are...
I really looked forward to going to this class. He really gets into the readings tries to get his students intrested aswell, its not that hard since he chooses really good books that focous on the theme. If You enjoy reading fiction.Take THIS class! it feels more like a book club than a class. Very Helpful with essays if you need it.
Professor Howland creates a writing environment that pulls us in with magical force. Get ready to amend your books with hours of insightful annotations that produce the in-depth analysis he knows we all possess. Relevant topics that change the world around us are covered by a variety of global authors. Prepare yourself for a true literary journey.
Online course. he's fantastic. although he gives alot of work, he grades decently. you will have to do discussions, assignments, and four essays. don't worry, even I thought this is gunna kill me but it didn't. I would recommend it. Time went by so fast, I cannot believe it I'm done! Pretty straight foward assignments and discussions! easy course!!
I learned a lot in professor Howland's class. He asks students to write 4 essays that relate to today's issues. He wants to hear students' voices thru assignments. Do all works on time. You will enjoy the class. =]
Likes to hear himself talk, tends to rant on and on and smile creepily. Handwriting incomprehensible. He should be easy, but PLAYS FAVORITES! For this class there was 7 mandated books, so my 2 friends and I shared. When my friend asked how he could improve his grade, he said buy the books. Made a huge fuss.Didn't like me, so he was very rude to me.
If you have an interest stay away! He uses highly subjective grading and is extremely boring. Cannot facilitate conversation which is odd because his entire class seems to be built around it. I found myself tuning out after he gave me a B on an essay that I put much work into. After I got A-s on subpar papers. Made no sense at all.
Very good teacher. 4 take home essays. He allows you to improve them if he feels the class didnt do well. Midterm and final WILL NOT hurt you. Discussons get a little dull. Medium amount of reading. usually post a 225 word response online each week. good class. good grader.
Quirky but nice guy, great book selection, interesting discussions, fair amount of work just a couple of chapters of reading+short online responses every week, and 4 Essays. Found almost all the books at the library- save 2 I'm glad I bought anyways. Was able to do well on essays because topics were something you could really be passionate about.
Total literature loving hippie. You can not slack off- he expects you to complete all assignments and participate in class discussions which are mostly about reading assignments. The only thing I found disappointing was his lack of words on how to improve my writing. I constantly recieved a B on essays and got a B in the class, how suprising!
Mr. Howland is awesome, his class is always really interesting, and if you show up and do all the reading this class is no problem.
Super easy class! He tells all the requirements you need for the essay, and he is willing to help out students! If you pay attention in his class, you will be fine.
The class is A LOT of reading, naturally. He always has some wise and insightful way of looking into the fiction - extremely fun to listen to. He's a hard rubric grader for the essays, so you really need to put in the effort for the letter grade. Overall awesome guy, I recommend him to anyone interested in the subject.
I took the class online. I was disappointed, that as an English Instructor, he often sent multiple emails instead of conveying his thoughts in one. For the research paper, 36 hours before the deadline he changed the scope and told us to add our voice into the paper. The reading was laborious, but the text work is easy-busy work.
Howland is nice but he's very hard. His essays are hard to write. He's picky at grading. I withdrew from his class because his class was way too hard for me in Fall Quarter 2012. If you have an interest in English, stay away from him! He should retire from De Anza!
Howland is nice but he's very hard. I tried not fall asleep in class. I withdrew from his class in Fall Quarter 2012 because his class way too hard for me. If you have an interest in English, stay away from him! He should retire from De Anza!
A LOT of reading. You read everyday! & the books are confusing! You dont do much in his class. He has in class discussions everyday but he never chose me in whole quarter. >:)
DO NOT TRUST all of the good grading of this guy below! I took the class with him and learned nothing after the quarter ended. Class is BORING, readings are WEIRD, Grading is HARD ( my friend did not get an A just because of 3 grammar mistakes). STAY AWAY from him if you want to protect your GPA and interest in ENGLISH. PS: He plays FAVORITE
Not a very clear instructor and his essay prompts make writing even more difficult. You would b better off writing your own prompts. I had straight A's coming in to the class. Not sure if he gave an A. Compared essay scores with everyone sitting around me, all B's and lower
Snoring in class, not really, but it IS a bore, I don't care what anyone says. Reading material was decent, interesting topics but I feel like this teacher is more focused on philosophical questions rather than "how can I make my students writing better". No grading rubric for ANYTHING, so if you like orders, you will get none! Yay or nay? I say EH
The class is boring and you you won't really learn anything. My writing hasn't gotten any better after taking this course. You could go to him after class and ask how you could make your essay better after he hands it back to you, but he'll just skim through it quickly and give you a few vague remarks that won't really help. Extremely tough grader.
Hes a TOUGH essay grader.I got a 5 on my English AP test and yet no A here. IN my class no one's essay can get any higher than a B+. There are 4 takehome essays, the 4th one is ur final essay. No midterms or finals. There are small reading quizes that doesn't count much points. This old geezer's handwriting on ur graded essay is hard to read.
I thought Steve was great! Maybe he was harder in previous quarters, but if you just wrote down clear thoughts and your paper made sense, you would get a good grade. He is definitely not as particular with writing styles, so he won't mark you off for small details. Weekly forums and journals are about the only work. Lots lots lots of reading
Mr. Howland is a serious teacher, expects the same from his students, and lectures on a wide range of subjects, all related to the readings. He shares observations and information about literature, life and popular culture that are of super high quality - very impressive. Best teacher ever! He grades hard on essays, and expects insightful essays.
He is a really nice teacher... you get the grade that you deserve, but he tries to bump up your grade if you do everything else. i would defiantly take him again! make sure you do you essays for realz!! lol don't b.s. your papers.
Fairly straightforward class, there's 3 essays and 1 research paper along with some online journal assignments. As long as you pay attention in class, read the assigned books, and spend time writing your papers, it's not that bad of a course. His handwriting is almost impossible to read, so you have to go ask him what he's trying to communicate.
Very straightforward class. 3 essays and a final research paper. No exams or finals. I'm usually an A or A- paper writer, but I never received anything above a B+ on any papers in this class. It is still possible to get an A- if you get all Bs on your paper as long as you do the other HW (reading). Responds really fast and a nice guy though.
Prof Howland's class was great! He chooses modern readings that lead to really great class discussions. There are a few points in the class when there is heavy reading due, but the books are honestly all amazing and I wanted to to the work - I often read ahead! Tough grader on papers, but reasonable. Really philosophical and inspirational guy.
I took this class to complete my GE for EWRT2. It was an online class that had tons of readings(great books) & easy busy work. Although, essays prompts were tough and confusing. He wasn't concise with his directions and was always sending multiple emails to try & clear it up. On all my essays I received a B on essays. It was frustrating...
I enjoyed Prof. Howland's online class. When he gave prompts for an essay, there were many choices to choose from, not just 3 prompts like the majority of other English teachers give. Very helpful and responds quickly to emails. I would take him again if I could.
Prof Howland is nice and responsible. The novels he chose were interesting. His lecture and in-class discussion is quite helpful for essay writing. His grading is strict. He grades based on the level of your writing and does not curve. Four books to read, three essays and one research paper. If you are confident with your writing skill, take him.
Professor Howland is a nice guy. His class is reasonable, relevant, and doesn't demand too much. The final grade is comprised mostly four essays, each averaging 1,000 words or about 5 pages -- which is pretty easy to do as long as you have a good understanding of the books assigned. All the books are interesting and easy to read. Good class to take
Howland is a tough grader. The way he grades is unclear. He usually gives us the rubric he used to grade our paper after we turn them in. This way he claims we can be more creative and focus more on our paper rather than the rubric. I did not like that very much. However, what he teaches is really interesting. Overall, great but tough.
This was my first online class I have ever taken and I really liked the way that Howland had it set up. I didn't get through all of all of the books, but as long as you read most of them you'll be okay. I never got less than an A on any essay and even skipped a couple of the assignments and did fine. He gives good feedback after each essay.
Professor Howland is one of the best English professors I have taken at De Anza . He is a tough grader when it comes to essays, however, his feedbacks are fair and beneficial. English is not my strongest subject, but Howland has taught me a lot through his feedbacks. All his assignments are pretty straightforward and from the books he assigned.
I took Steve for an online English class. I was nervous as I'd never taken an online class before, but Steve was accessible around the clock and answered every question I had. He isn't to harsh a grader, but be prepared to spend lots of time revising and editing your essays. If you're not afraid of an online English class, Mr. Howland is your man!
I took this class with a friend. I did ALL of the work, and did better on every paper. My friend skipped 10 out of 12 of the online homework assignments, and skipped a rough draft on one of the papers. Somehow, we both ended up with the exact same grade. The grading system is bad, but the papers were easy. I never had to read the books assigned.
Comes across like a nice guy but appearances can be misleading. The reality is that he is a VERY hard grader--the highest grades in my class were B+; nobody got an A. He requires too many long reading assignments and he makes you edit and revise essays numerous times. If you want to work extremely hard for a low grade, this is the class for you!
This class was not bad at all. He was so easy to access through office hour. He gave great feedback.
Lots of writing, but very funny. He is passionate about writing, and his main goal is to get us ready for the next level in English.
He assigns TONS of work. If you are a full time student with no other commitments- you would likely be okay, however, if you work: he is too demanding. Typically I excel in English/Writing though I did not do very well with his writing assignments. Only take him if you are a non-working student with plenty of time to read.
Assigns a lot of work! There are 4 required novels that you must read. Also four papers. The research paper he makes you submit a bunch of assignments during the process just to ensure that you are writing a new research paper from scratch... He is a tough grader! I did not enjoy the class at all!
Ridiculous amounts of reading!! Expects students to read an entire novel every 2 weeks with written responses, discussions and papers. Do not expect to be able to take any other classes or work (even part time) if you take his course. Had to drop because he graded harshly and there was too much work- should pick one or the other.
Caring and chill guy. I liked this professor.
Professor's class was really fun. Since it is a required English course class, you will be doing 4 assigned essays & read 4 books/novels. The novels/books aren't a waste of money because you do actually use it. He doesn't have a testing final, just final research paper. I highly recommend him! He's very sweet, patient, and understanding. Good luck!
Professor Howland is extremely nice and he is willing to help anyone. His grading system in EWRT 2 is so easy and impressing him with your essays takes no effort. Sure he assigns a lot of work, but they are all easy and are graded based on completion rather than content. Take this class if you want to boost your GPA and fulfill your GE requirement.
I really enjoyed Professor Howland's online EWRT 2 class as it was an easy A and it was fun! His class might seem intimidating at first since there are a lot of assignments. However, all of them are quick to complete and are graded easily. I would recommend Professor Howland's online EWRT 2 because it was an easy A and I actually learned a lot.
Sign up for Professor Howland's online EWRT 2 class and boost your GPA while learning how to write better essays! This class is a winner and an easy A.
It's a straightforward course: read the 4 books, then write the 4 essays. That said, I enjoyed coming to class because I thought Prof Howland always had interesting things to say/analyses to make about the books that I hadn't considered while reading. There's a lot of reading and a lot of writing, but that's a given. Easy course and good prof.
Honestly im the type that hates reading and writing a lot but he would make us read very interesting books and other assignments and he just really makes you think when you do any work and it really made like almost every single assignment so interesting and honestly made my essays improve a lot.I would say take the class if you know you can work
Take ELIT 10 with Professor Howland if you enjoy reading and literary analysis. Although this class requires quite a bit of time, you'll get an A if you put in the work; he's a lenient grader. We read 4 books (1 graphic novel) in total. There are 2 take-home midterm papers, 1 group presentation, and had 1 take-home final.
Get ready to read, precisely 4 books. The professor assigns a lot of work, but they're fairly doable. While he assigns 4 papers in a 12 week span, he's an incredibly lenient and easy grader. I always received Bs on my paper in high school, but Professor Howland always give me an A on the papers where I put in medium effort.
3 books and 4 essays (1 is a research paper). Pros: Responds to emails quickly. Lots of essay topics to choose from (10+!). Doesn't assign that much work. Cons: Nitpicky grading & no grading rubric. Do not take his class and except an A unless you're really confident in your writing ability.
He will drop you from the Online Class if you don't turn in the assignment on time during the first 2 weeks of the quarter. Very unfair regardless of one's circumstances.
Do not take his class if you are sensitive or deal with anxiety. He assigns very adult and graphic books for you to read without any warning. He doesn't lecture he just goes on and on about his own opinion trying to put it on you. Extremely boring every day. I would definitely not recommend.
I have written him several emails asking about specifics on my papers and about things I didn't understand from his comments. He did not respond to these emails, but when I emailed about homework, he always responded. This is how I knew he was receiving my emails. I was not asking for a grade change but wanted to grow as a writer. Frustrating prof.
Read The Circle, Boomerang, How to Get Filthy Rich in Asia. Weekly journal, sometimes discussion posts, basic writing exercises. 3 essays in total with about 2 weeks to write. Everything is open on the first day of class. Easy essay grading imo. Sort of rude through emails. But it was easy so I guess it's fine.
Howland is a sound professor. I appreciate his adaptability to the pandemic and general flexibility for students. He offers a LOT of essay prompts to choose from, some more complex (if you like that) than others. He gave pretty good feedback, but mainly had us read Writing Logically (required text, actually mandatory) to improve writing technique.
He gives long essays and grades them pretty hard. He gives 10+ prompts per essay but each just as confusing as the other. His feedback is somewhat hard to understand and has very few assignments that are put into the grade book despite the amount you do. Grade is mainly your essay grades. Take him only if you are a strong writer.
Don't take his class unless you are confident with your writing skill. He's a tough grader. He gives so many prompts for each essay (10-15 prompts), and they are very confusing. He does not give much feedback on your essay and answer the mails carelessly. He grades assignments based on correction which may make your grade go down.
Tough essay grader, very nit-picky about certain assignments. Instructions can be confusing.
professor Howland assigns many assignments but doesnt grade them all. Therere only a few assignments that are graded and they arent graded for completion. He is very particular about essays and does not post a rubric for papers which makes it hard to know what he expects. He is an inconsistent grader. Dont take him unless youre a strong writer
He needs to reevaluate how he grades/teaches virtually especially in a pandemic he docks too many points for the most MINOR things its ridiculous
Professor Howland is a good professor! I had him online and we had 3 novels we had to read. He assigns a lot of reading and you usually have responses, discussions and journals due weekly but they're relatively easy if you do the reading. Essays are done by prompts and he is a tough grader but he definitely strengthens your writing. Really try!
He has four main essays for the EWRT Class and you must get an A in at least one of them to pass with an A. His homework and discussion assignments were very straighforward and an easy way to get credit. But, his main essays do not include rubrics & students were all sort of left to figure out what to include in the essays.
Sometimes, I don't understand his speaking because of his mask. He wears a mask all the time. But he is a good professor, he is very extra grading.
The professor wears a mask often, making comprehension tricky. But he's a solid teacher who grades thoroughly. The textbook is required, and attendance is a must. Unstuck ai and study sessions helped me ace this class.
