Uhhg... An official syllabus was never given, the unofficial was never used. Assignments were given on whims. Lectures were tediously boring, unhelpful, and typically not related to test material.
I thought he was great, very clear and detailed. Gave an idea, then an example of that idea, then had the class try a practical application problem. I have learned a lot.
Awesome Professor. I had already taken a similiar class in High School but he found easier ways to explain ideas. Class ran smoothly with the presentation of an idea, multiple examples, then business applications to show real life applications.
Was proposed as a difficult class but ended up not being that way. Nice guy, fairly good teacher
Very clear for an otherwise potentially complicated subject. Although homework was assigned for each class, it helps you keep up which is key. The project could have been excluded, but overall I would recommend him to others and am glad I took the class as it helped in courses taken in following semesters.
I found his teaching style unclear and over my head. The course text is unreadable. He assumes everyone understands everything he says, and is unhelpful when asking questions during class and at office hours. Has turned out to be the most excruciatingly awful course I've ever taken.
Assumed everyone should understand more than basics in this introductory statistics course. My attempts to get help were not headed, and he seems to speak over a lot of people's heads.
Great prof. A lot of hard work, but you learn a lot.
He moves really fast through the material. Tries to be entertaining, but is NOT. This is kind of a tough class.
A little goofy, but very effective and keeps your attention.
Dr. H was fabulous! I never thought that I would like a stats class as much as I did. He approached the material from in a variety of different ways and always kept it interesting. He's pretty funny too!
Great guy, but there's barely time to notice. This was boot camp for statistics. Was A LOT of work. I don't know how I survived! If you have a good math background you might be alright.
Great professor! I took the online section, and he does a great job of presenting the material in a variety of ways to help different learning styles. He's very helpful if you take advantage of office hours and makes some pretty funny jokes! I didn't have a math background, but still got a B.
His jokes are dumb but you laugh so he likes you. He's an elitest so he likes the kids who understand the material. He answers a question with a question. He puts people on the spot and has a tendency to single certain ind out. Semester project is unorganized and is hard for business applications due to lack of data. However, you will learn a lot.
Very knowledgable, but transference is lost somewhere between his mouth and our brains, which are taxed by the rapid pacing. Deviates from textbook but provides online notes. Midterm makes or breaks your grade. Memorizes student names/faces and calls on them without warming. Go to lecture, read the textbook religiously, and hang on for dear life!
He is a nice guy and has a good personality but he talks over students' heads. He assumes that the material is known by everyone when it isn't. He moves very fast through topics and the course is pretty hard. There are a lot of frustrated students in this class! If you have a stats backround and love the subject I could see how he would be fun.
I thought that this class would be horribly boring, but I came out of it really having enjoyed it. Dr. H really pays attention to the different learning styles of the class and tailors his lectures to them all. Yes, this class is a lot of work, but it all contributes to a great learning experience. I hope to take another class from him soon!
you have to go to class, he goes fast through the material, the exam is m/c, he does not explain well
Extremely difficult class if you are a beginner with no prior knowledge of OMS. If the subject does not interest you, I would recommend taking OMS 2550 with another professor. Dr. Huchendorf goes into extreme depth and if you even want a basic understanding of the class, you must read the $250 book and study daily.
Without any prior exposure to statistics this class was a bit daunting at first. Dr. Huchendorf does tend to fly through the material and you really need to keep up. He knows everyone's names and if you look like you're day dreaming he'll call on you, so be prepared. He puts a lot of effort into his teaching and is extremely organized.
This class is not hard if you just read the textbook. Dr. H is a very knowledgable professor, his lectures are organized well and clear. He does move quick through the material though. He lets u know exactly what will be on the tests. He is fairly entertaining and humorous, I strongly recommend him as a professor very cool and smart guy
this guy is a jerk. i'm sorry, but he flies through the material and shows not interest or concern in how much you actually are learning (although he tries to pretend to with all of his "accelerated learning techniques" and nonsense) DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE!
He works you hard, but you learn tons. A really great class.
I'm in Dr. Huchendorf's OMS 2550 class right now with only about 2 or so weeks left, and I can honestly walk out of there with actually learning the material. Great teacher and really knows his stuff. Class consists of mandatory attendance, alt-cat's (in-class group assignments), online homework and quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final.
Furthermore from my comment below, he is a humorous guy. He will call on you in class, whether or not you know the answer - may be embarrassing. Do well on the first midterm otherwise you won't be looking at an A anymore.
Knows the learning process well and does a good job of conveying material so that all can understand. Tests and grading were somewhat difficult... but fair.
Terrible class. Smart guy. WAY too much work. He makes it impossible to keep up. I would NOT take another class from him.
Dr H knows his statistics, is an industry pro, and teaches to different learning styles. He actually makes statistics interesting to learn. I agree with most others though, he assigns a lot of work and does tend to talk over students heads at times (particularly when talking about calculus).
Best professor I've ever had hands down. I don't understand the negative comments I've read. Funny and approachable, he gets to know everyone, cares about your performance and adapts his teaching to everyone in the room. Lots of work, yes, but if you're looking to get the most out of your tuition dollars and are serious about your MBA, he's it.
Dr. H. What a man. Great teacher, be ready to learn, 'cause he gonna learn ya real good.
Very knowledgable proffesor. He really knows and cares about the topic. He involves the class and uses real world examples to make it easy to understand. Very heavy work load. Its a tough course but if you dedicate yourself you will learn the material.
Let's just say he doesn't understand that for part time MBA students, time is of the essence. I don't have 20+hours to dedicated only to his class when i am working full time and taking 2 other classes besides his. Way too much work and not helpful or understanding of time restrictions!
Tough teacher. Very hard to understand. Get a different Stats teacher ASAP if you are signed up for this one. Other teachers are way easier and way lighter on the work load
Hutchendorf is actually a good Professor who gets a bad wrap because his course is difficult. He makes statistics, which would normally be very dry and boring, interesting and entertaining. There is a lot of work involved in the class but it absolutely helps you learn the material better.
If you are working a full time job, your life will suffer if you take this class. Expect 30-40 hours per week for homework. The midterm and final are brutal. This was by far the most time intensive class of my MBA, and there's no other way around all the work. I strongly urge you to find another professor. He is smart, but will drive you too hard.
Huchendorf will challenge you. He is very good at trying to teach to different styles of learning with in class homework, out of class homework, projects, and quizzes. The culmination of all these things broaden your understanding of the subject matter greatly. Study more than just the night before the test. Not for slackers.
Dr. H is a cool guy with some interesting stories but his teaching methods are not the best. Despite what he says about teaching in a variety of ways, I found myself doing 95% of the work out of class with the text book. Dr. H is a very nice guy, but if you have the option, take a different teacher.
Covered a lot of ground and conveyed the importance of statistics well. It's a hard subject and his tests are ridiculously hard (pre-curve), but he's clear enough. Also, it seems like he's trying to trip people up, by only calling on people who aren't paying attention. His smug attitude might be annoying, but overall he's an effective teacher.
After completing this course, I don't understand a good part of the comments on this page. This class is not hard as long as you read the textbook, do the hw, and do well on the quizzes (I had over 100% in it after the 1st midterm). I did find Huchendorf to be rude at times. That said, however, he is willing to answer questions/help you if needed
TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR FOR THIS CLASS! The amount of work he requires for a 3-credit class is ridiculous. I easily spent 25-30 hours per week - and I got a B. Homework assignment and quiz every week, as well as a 3-part project, a midterm, and a final exam... REALLY?! Maybe a smart guy but not a good professor.
Take different professor if you don't want end up getting C- or D. He is very confusing and his alt-cats are absolutely useless. Avoid him at any costs!
Definitely not the easiest teacher I have ever had--he expects a lot of you, and this class is quite a lot of work. But, unlike other teachers, he actually cares about his students a lot, and will always work with you if you have questions. Try and fully understand the ALT-CATS, otherwise you won't succeed on exams.
Avoid at any costs! His exams are HARD AS HELL! His ALT-CATs are absolutely useless, and it's extremely hard to understand what he is talking about. Medians on his exams are around 50%. A lot of students have no idea what is going on in the class. Just avoid him if you don't want end up getting C or D.
Dr. H genuinely has his student's best interests in mind and clearly knows his stuff. Unfortunately he has difficulty conveying this through his lectures which can be dry and monotonous. Be prepared to work hard in this class and ask questions. Attendance is essentially mandatory since a good portion of points are earned in class.
Dry, boring professor. So bogged down in educational theory that he makes statistics more complicated than it needs to be. For a "Business Statistics" course, the emphasis is definitely on the latter word. Many class topics do not relate to the real world - examples are an afterthought, and are loose analogies. Feels like a high school class.
Dr. H is the best professor I've ever had at CSOM. People love to say he's difficult and his tests are hard. Well, welcome to college. If you take the time to learn from him, you will realize he is exceptionally intelligent and very easy to talk to. I've taken two of his classes, and I would take a hundred more. Amazing professor.
This was a hard class for me. It was the first data and stats class I've taken, and I took it online. But Professor Huchendorf was incredibly helpful when I had questions, and even spent a few hours with me on the phone to help me out. This class is tough and he has high expectations. But at the end of the day, he is a great professor.
Dr. H. teaches a tough class, but he is incredibly passionate about it. It's a stats class - I've never heard of a "fun" one, but there were more laughs in this one than any other heavy quant class I've taken. He does a good - not perfect - job of getting to the essentials and application for the real world. Lots of work - be ready!
His class is definitely not designed to be easy, but if you do what he says to do then you will learn a lot. Lectures are incredible, crystal clear and predictable format. Do your altcats and don't skip, prof's material is more useful than the book.
Dr. H is the man, he has been my favorite professor at Carlson. He truly does try to make statistics as interesting as it possibly can be by bringing in real world examples on his ALT-CATs. Definitely make you earn your grade, but if you try, an A is doable, for sure.
He goes through material extremely quickly and his lectures are really boring. He doesn't convey the material clearly as he rushes through all his lectures. He takes attendance through in-class assignments called Alt-Cats, so attendance is mandatory. Overall, I recommend taking another professor and trying your luck elsewhere.
He rushes through material and doesn't take time to explain topics. He expects students to know all of the material in class as he expects perfect answers when he cold calls. Also, he tests are all about the book which makes attending class pointless. However, he makes you attend his boring lectures as attendance is mandatory or you lose points.
If you're a part time MBA student with a full time job who wants to take more than one class in a semester, and you don't already know stats, don't take this class with this professor.
Professor H is a nice enough guy but he really takes this intro level stats class too seriously and often has gotten angry at students for not paying attention. Every class is mandatory because he makes you do these worksheets for credit every day. He often skims over difficult material and spends too much time on basic concepts.
The class heavily rests on two tests: a midterm and a cumulative final. That being said he also had a couple of 5 point worksheets almost every class as an attendance method. He was a fine lecturer, I just really didn't like all his rules; no food, no cellphones, he'd randomly call on you, and he wanted all the worksheets and notes printed out.
Don't take this course with Dr. H. Tests are extremely hard - 1 midterm and the final. Students are graded on weekly reading quizzes, weekly online homework assignments, In-class ALT CATS, and the two tests. Dr. H goes extremely fast in his lectures, making it impossible to retain any information. He teaches by telling you instead of showing you.
His lectures are boring but there's in class points so it is kind of a necessary evil. His tests are not that hard, just study the lecture notes rather than the book. I didn't really use the book to be honest.
Avoid if you can, but likely youre stuck. 8 credit class work load, a 1 credit class worth of benefit. Don't buy the textbook, you get an E version when you pay $100 for the busy work (HW) The online class was an old recording of a b squad instructor, talking quietly for hours. The consensus after the final was, wishing we went to St. Thomas.
Good professor but tough class, I worked my butt off to get an A here.
reading, pre-quiz, alt-cats, homework, team projects, two tests. All worth it. You get into a routine which makes you learn and apply the concepts.
He utilizes many different techniques in class to appeal to all different learning styles.
Really enjoyed his teaching style, it applied to all types of learners. From orientation people said this class was the hardest but as they told their backgrounds, it was history/english majors - no wonder they struggled. If you put the time in, you will find an exceptional professor and a challenging but not overwhelming. A++ class to be honest
Dr. H is a great professor and really cares about his students. He takes the time to thoroughly explain everything and gives you the resources necessary to succeed. Go to class, and work hard. You'll get out of the class what you put in. Overall he is probably the best professor I've had yet at Carlson.
Dr. H is definitely one of the best professors I've ever had. While the 1hr40min lectures can get long, they're broken up with in-class activities and group discussion so it's better than just a lecture for that long. Dr. H comes from industry which is a valuable perspective. He is very clear in lectures and I wish he was in the Stats department.
The class is hard and requires a lot of work The one midterm and final are 60 percent of the total grade
Good professor who cares about his students. However, there are some fundamental flaws with the class. There is only one midterm, so if you do poorly on it, there is little chance to recover. The final was next to impossible. He also takes a long time to grade exams, considering they are only scantron.
Dr. H is a good professor and he cares about what he teaches. His lectures are so full which he would use every minute in the class time.
Honestly once you get past the dad jokes he's kinda funny but the course is near impossible. There is only a midterm and a final and at the end of the semester I felt like I had learned nothing. Wouldn't recommend Dr. H but I hear the other prof's aren't much better
Dr. H is very knowledgeable about stats, but is not the best at explaining the concepts. The in class worksheets and online homework taught me the most in this course. The exams are heavily weighted and difficult so you really have to work to get a good grade in this class. The in class worksheets and homework are easy points though.
Dr H's course was by far the toughest course I've taken. His lectures take the entire time, he doesn't explain concepts well and he expects you to understand everything to the same extent he does. The final is impossible so good luck. Don't try to discuss your grade with him either, he will just be insensitive and blow you off. Avoid if possible!!!
Dr. H is very clear with his grading and going to every class definitely helps your grade by getting the ALT-CAT attendance points. Too much of your grade is weighted on the final but if you do well on all the quizzes, homework, and do extra credit it is not impossible to get an A.
His class is really well structured. Grades are heavily exam oriented and hence try performing as well as you can on the two exams. Some lecture material make no sense at all but that's just to cover syllabus and never come on the exam. Work hard, and go for office hours. He is even better and less intimidating one on one.
Youtube videos are MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better than his class. Will NOT take with him again.
Steve isn't good at what he does. He moves way too quickly, and expects you to print out the lecture notes in order to even attempt learning anything in class. You do participation questions in class, meaning you have to go. Tests are hard, and the TA's normally don't even know how to help you. Plz take someone else.
I really enjoyed Dr. H as a professor. He makes lectures interesting and has a great sense of humor. He moves through the concepts very quickly, so at times it's difficult to keep up. Make sure to get a good team, since a lot of learning is done within the group. The ALT-CATs are a great study tool for the mid-term and final.
Good guy. He was always very prepared for class, and while class may get boring some times, you can learn a lot if you pay attentions do the ALT CATS. There is a lot of weight on the final exam, roughly 40%, and it is very difficult, so spend lots of time studying for it.
Class is very hard and the exams, constructed of all multiple choice questions worth 10 points each, make up most of the grade. Print off lecture slides and start studying the first day of class cause you're going to need it. Dr. H is a good guy but his lectures can get long and confusing.
Lectures get long and can be boring but pay attention to the ALT CATs, it's where most of your learning is done. Start studying early for exams and go to office hours with questions, Dr. H can be very helpful one on one. If you do poorly on the midterm you still have a chance to bounce back with the final. Do all three extra credit assignments!
Dr. H is very smart and at times left me behind in lectures. Fortunately he has activities that help you learn hands on. He comes off as very pretentious sometimes and he is not always the most likable professor but overall he did a good job teaching the material. The course was hard and it took significant effort to earn my grade.
Dr. H is an outstanding lecturer and focuses on application, so it's easy to learn the material and its relevance. ALT-CATs are key to understanding the content and are great for those who learn by doing. May be a bit challenging for people with non-STEM backgrounds, but the material itself doesn't go beyond a typical 1000-level stats course.
I took this class as my required statistics class. The practice in class, the homework, and the tests are all very different. He doesn't make the homework and doesn't give good instructions for how to use technology with it. The tests are much harder than any of the practice, so that doesn't help with studying (don't expect more than a 60%).
Professor Huchendorf is one of the most dry and illogical professors I've encountered. He insists in memorizing formulas which is something I'd never expect a mathematics teacher to suggest, often never offering reasoning behind why the formulas or ideas exist as they do. His quizzes and tests are poorly worded and do not line up with homework.
Extremely boring lectures. We learn about a full section then do one problem (ALT-CAT) on it then move on to the next. As someone who learns by doing and working through problems I was very lost. Additionally, the only prep he gives for tests is just a list of everything covered by each section with no example problems or help.
I'm not sure which other professors teach stats, but any of them would be better than Dr. H. He teaches very little and expects the students to learn everything on their own. Talks about TaylorMade golf drivers more than actual material.
If I had the choice between yeeting myself into a volcano and taking this professor for another semester, I would already be halfway to the lava. Truly one of the worst professors I have every had. Shout out to Kahn Academy for teaching me the material!
Dr.H Is a great professor. His lectures were interesting and useful. He was very understanding with this whole pandemic going on and continued to provide quality teaching. His class might be very tough for some, but if you do your work and seek help when you get stuck you will do fine.
He is probably the best teacher I've met so far in college. His standards are pretty set and have very clear criteria and many pathways to achieve an A. The tests are pretty hard and challenging, but you'll get through it once you understand the material. DO the EXTRA CREDIT! Trust me, they will boost your grade 3%
Very inspirational and bring lots of examples in the real world. Still remember his examples even after 4 years.
I dont know how he is in person be this is the worst profesor to take for online. He doesn't go over what actually matters on his video lecture that you need to do the ALT-Cats with. Quizzes and exams are hard for no reason because the quizzes/ALT-CATs/ HW are very different from one another. By far the hardest class I have taken in college.
If you are a student who is used to not using lectures much and already have previous knowledge of the class you should be okay. If you know the material well and how to learn outside youre good. If you are expecting a teacher who wants to teach you in order for you to learn the material and pass assignments this may not be the professor for you.
Dr. H makes the assumption every student taking his course has a background in Statistics and Data Analysis. No pre-reqs or suggested prep work weeks in advance to help student's be successful throughout the semester. Online Stat lab is relatively useful but takes 4-6 hours to complete one attempt of Homework. Very hard- take a an intro class.
His lectures are really dull and a terrible online teacher . For a major class I would assume he would do live zoom lectures with interactions. Instead he makes students watch videos, and learn the information yourself like it is a freshman useless class. The material is interesting for supply chain major and had amazing real world examples.
Dr. H, and this class, was very "meh" for me. The lectures were at best manageable and at worst annoying (3+ hours). I succeeded because I already took stats in high school, but if stats is new to you, you might struggle. Dr. H is funny and I found the quizzes easy, but I learned little. I still don't get why AP Stats doesn't validate this course.
Dr. H was the worst professor I have ever had. He taught at levels way higher than he should have for the FIRST stats class. His exams were all multiple choice, and each question is worth 10 points - even though problems would have 7 steps. I would rather drop out of Carlson completely then have to take this professor again.
With distance learning Dr. H was easily the worst professor I had. His prerecorded lectures were boring and often didnt teach the content well at all. If you take the course with Dr. H be prepared to teach the content to yourself with the few resources he provides.
Dr. H is horrible. If you like to ask questions, he doesn't care. Exams are IMPOSSIBLE: class avg was 60%. His lectures are not helpful, and neither is the homework. HARD CLASS but this professor made is even WORSE. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, if you have to, drop the class!!! No one in my class every knew what was going on. Save your time and $$!!
Dr. H is very helpful if you put forth the effort to go to his office hours AND put in the work outside of class. His tests are VERY HARD, so you'll want to start studying far in advance for the final. He's a super nice guy and very smart, but you are going to have to work extremely hard for your grade.
I dread working on this class every single day. The homework is poorly correlated to what is taught during lecture. He is good at connecting content to the real world, and sometimes ok at explaining concepts, but execution of problem solving is poorly taught and I heavily rely on the textbook for this class. I feel like I'm teaching myself.
Lots of lecture videos. Engaging, although could definitely be more concise. Majority of grade dependent on assignments which are graded leniently. Course is graded on a curve so it is fairly manageable to get a good grade as long as you apply yourself. Seems to be the best stats teacher for this class from what I've heard
Dr. H is a fantastic teacher. But his method of teaching simply is by loading a ton of material into student's hands. He is clearly a great instructor, but his class is extremely hard. Handful of weekly assignments are on your plate every week, expect to give this class a lot of time commitment. He's a great professor, but get ready to work hard.
Tough class, but Prof. Huchendorf was solid all around.
It took a few weeks to pick up the momentum for this class, but by the end, I really appreciated Dr. H's structure in the syllabus/assignments. He was quick to respond to emails and clarify questions/uncertainty. Expect to put in a lot of time outside of class, but if you do, it'll pay off.
Dr. H is a cool dude and a nice grader. He lets you use notes and is a fair grader. He will put all the tools you need for an A right in front of you. Sometimes homework takes a while and his in class assignments get a little annoying. And lectures can get boring. But he is corny and funny, nice, helpful and offers extra credit often.
You are tested in materials before he teaches them. He does not give good examples of problems and really does not put in much effort to help you understand the material. By far the worst class experience I have had at UMN. I would highly recommend not taking his classes
I am very grateful for the chance to have Dr. H in charge with my class. He has incredible powerful experience in Data Analysis and Statistics for Managers and from the first module I was fascinated about this subject and Dr. H made it more captivating. Great knowledge addition for my business career. Thank you Dr. H
Dr.H is is pretty bad at teaching the material. He talks so fast and doesn't really give you time to process and think about what you just learned. If you miss a class, GOOD LUCK getting caught back up because this class is fast paced. He isn't very helpful and doesn't do much for you to help you succeed. He doesn't do exam reviews either.
Every 2 hour lecture is just information being thrown at you, there is one exam worth half your grade. No practice problems for this exam. A student in this class who had a family death and missed 2-3 weeks of class, the professor told him that he could not get any points for those assignments. Every time I asked a question I was more confused.
