AWFUL: Got an A, but HATED it. Did all the work & was at every class. Late/sloppy. Unrealistic in terms of his expectations about his essays ("A" Eng. 2 student here). His exam & essay grading are unbelievably subjective, and you can't argue with him. If you must: be prepared, show an "interest", TALK a LOT, turn in rough drafts for his "opinion"& prepare the exam Q's ahead of time.

Lectures feels long, but participation is not mandatory, he will only take attendance first class. 3 books are assigned and you'll have to read one of them for the final group project. There's a few easy assignments throughout the semester where he gives almost everyone full credit. No late assignments accepted.

Professor Kauffman is a great professor in the sense that he knows what he's talking about. He is very inspirational and gets you thinking long and hard about the topics he's discussing. Although his early morning class lectures are extremely long and not necessarily entertaining, he makes you think in a way you would of never before.

The WORST teacher at SMC. Do NOT take this teacher. He should be fired. I worked my ass off and got a B. He doesn't care about anyone but himself.

He is a very interesting, knowledgeable prof. He does require 10 hours of community service and reflection to pass the class. Class is mostly lecture/discussion based which I found extremely interesting. Take home mid term/final. Heavy reading so keep up with it and use his office hours if necessary. Cool, laid back dude.

Prof. Kaufman is one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes his lectures engaging and fun, so as long as you take notes and pay attention you should get decent grades on the tests. However, the class is only graded on the midterm, the final, a project, and a few reflection assignments, so be sure to give it your all.

Great teacher, very knowledgable. I enjoyed his class and would take him again. Do the assignments and you will do fine. If you miss an assignment though it will mess up your grade as there are only a handful of assignments all worth a large percentage. NO TESTS THOUGH ONLY PAPERS AND PROJECTS.

He is very passionate about philosophy, with that being said he will give ALOT of information in his lectures so be ready to write. Within the class their is a lot of reading and ques from the reading will be on exams. Overall GREAT PROFESSOR!

Professor Kaufman is amazing. His lectures are really helpful for understanding the material. The lectures are heavy so be ready to take lots of notes as the exams are exactly the notes he presents as the powerpoint. He does not take attendance but if you want an A, you should show up because you won't understand the material if you miss a class.

This is a really interesting class, and I loved the community service element, but wish I had known about it prior to enrolling. There are no tests, and the grades are based on community service completion and subjective papers - which I really liked. Unfortunately, Prof Kaufman is not very caring or understanding with his students.

This class is the bane of my existence this semester. I have never had a professor so unwilling to work with me if I put in the effort. He does not care about extenuating circumstances. At all. His "type-up" assignments aren't very clearly outlined and are tedious at best. Plus it feels like he twists the material to suit his purposes.

I took Steve's PHIL 9 Logic class for a math GE and it was defiantly a very easy A for me. The class itself is very doable, suggested homework but never graded, 5 quizes (lowest one dropped), two midterms and a final. Steve isn't the most helpful but he really knows what he's doing. Get on his good side and you'll be just fine.

Very smart, eloquent and passionate about philosophy. Grade consisted of 6 type-ups, an informal presentation, midterm and final. No extra credit. Doesn't allow the use of technology in class. You just copy the notes that he projects in class. Can be boring sometimes. Doesn't post his notes online, so go to class.

This professor is one of the worst I have had. Volatile! When I was in his class, he dropped one girl because he clearly didn't like her. She said he told her it was because she had been absent twice, but 2 other students I got to know in class missed more than that and didn't get dropped. I had read on here to make friends with him; did, got a B.

Steven Kaufman has been my favorite teacher at SMC. His grading criteria could not be more clear, and simple! This class was amazing and I'd recommend anyone to take it. You submit a total of 6 type ups on any Wednesday of your choice, for the whole semester. If you get + on those you can pretty much fail the midterm/final and still pass. Easy A.

Prof Kaufman is a great professor. He may get impatient at times with students, but mainly it was because they were getting off-topic. He's very intelligent, and I mean VERY intelligent, and you can tell he loves to teach. He will not try to steer you to a specific moral philosophy and you'll cover A LOT of ground, but every class was engaging.
