Good teacher; explains things well; very helpful to students.
Super helpful and friendly; very available for help outside class. He's not easy, but he makes sure all his students learn. Highly recommended.
Great teaher. He explains everything very well and provides plenty of opportunity for clarification and outside help. I wish more teachers were like this.
Very helpful, and gives great notes! Really a sweet guy
Great professor. Makes material very clear and is extremely helpful. I came away with a much better understanding of Calculus. ... was a class I certainly didn't mind going to.
great teacher, explains everything.
Awesome!!!
He's a nice guy, give plenty of example problems really easygoing
Difficult subject, but lets just say i'm not about to skip class cause I like lookin at him. Haha, he's a nice guy too.
Reminds me of a football coach when he writes on a chalkboard. You know, setting up the big play for a 4th quarter drive.
Steve is an effective teacher who cuts through the crap and shows students the most direct way to understand math concepts.
Intelligent, engaging, and thoughtful. GREAT instructor. Very helpful and takes time with every student in need.
Very nice guy, but OVER explains equations to the point of confusion. Becareful to have him as an instructor, depending on your learning style.
Very good professor, though he tends to run through the material a bit fast. Always willing to help, assigns useful homework and the tests are straighforward and fair (though he is a fairly harsh grader).
He is a great teacher and a great guy. He will help you as much as he can. He is a hard grader. Make sure you have time for your HW if your taking a summer class. He is very fast (but clear) and he gets threw the course. A very cool guy who likes math alot. Wish more math profesors were like him.
Kilner is a great professor, he is extremely helpful and is very clear when giving examples and will always stop and help students if they dont understand a concept no matter how simple or trivial it may seem. He can make things a little over complicated at times but overall he's the best professor Ive had at mcc. does run through things a bit fast
GREAT TEACHER!!! Taking Technical Discrete Mathematics, and doing very well. He explains things very well, and I LOVE the fact that he uses the chalk board instead of those stupid overheads. Sometimes he over-explains simple things, but that's ok. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED! I will take 160 and 210 with him if I can.
I think there ratings speak for themselves. Although MCC is one of the better 2 yr schools in the country, I really think that this guy should be teaching in a 4 yr school. I was afraid of Math before taking his Algebra class, and then I took Calc with him too. I had to take Calc 2 at B-Port. Wish he taught there...
I don't like Math, hadn't taken a Math course since H.S. Professor Kilner is the BEST Math teacher I've ever had, and one of the best professors. He gives thorough explanations, is very responsive to the class (he explains a concept, then not only asks but looks over his students to see if they've "gotten it"). He's very dedicated to his students
Professor Kilner is a solid math teacher. Without a doubt he knows math but he can be difficult to understand for math dummies. He is a fair grader and gives a lot of partial-credit on tests which you don't find with many professors. I felt at times when students asked him a lot of questions, he could be condescending. Bad days, maybe?
Best math teacher ever. Even after the death of my dad shortly after the beginning of of the semester, Kilner helped me excel beyond what I could have done even in a non-stressful environment. He has a excellent method of teaching; there was nothing I didn't understand in his class. Oh yes, and not to mention, he's quite a babe.
brilliant teacher, but sometimes almost too smart... even though i am a math major, i had trouble following his reasoning during a lot of his lecture. other than that, although i feel his class may be slitghly tougher, he is a very fair grader.
Very good teacher. I did not understand math in High School but once I took his 098 class, everything I had questioned in past math classes were cleared up. He does NOT use the textbook..not worth the money. Notes are VERY clear and organized. Highly recommended if math is not your strongest subject.
best teacher ive ever had! explains everything when you dont get it, and really cares about his students. deff. recommend this teacher
He's a brilliant guy and a good speaker. He's not a comedian like some professors, but in a high level course, that's not really what you want in a professor. Calculus II is hard. I'm a straight-A math major but this class was challenging at times. The best thing you can do is practice, take copious notes and come in with questions.
Great teacher, was always willing to help/answer questions even if they were slightly off topic. Very fun.
Very smart man and good teacher. Can break things down very clearly. HOWEVER, veryyyyy fast paced class. i wasnt able to keep up and im very good at math. Many people in my class have already withdrawn and I might consider doing the same...too fast paced for me.
Amazing professor!! i never unserstood math in high school, but he explained things until you got them and i ended up with a b+ in the class. very caring and helpful. i would highly recommend this professor!!
awesome teacher i would recommend him to anyone he made math seem easy, i always do horrible in math and i cant believe i passed. seriously if u suck at math take him hell make it so clear and understandable!!! over all great teacher and hes pretty cute too =D
Awesome teacher! I am really bad at math and he really did a great job explaining the material. He would go out of his way to let you ask questions and ask for extra help. I highly reccomend!
Very good teacher, although I didn't understand his explanations most of the time.
The guy is a great guy, he really tries hard to convey his meaning and explanation in any way possible, that said, if someone asks a question or doesn't understand he will dumb it down more and more until an ape could understand. I think he's a great teacher for any topic and I feel bad I didn't really pay attention cuz I knew the stuff. Good guy!!
Talked to much! He sometimes acted like he didn't have time for questions.
Had him last semester, and I miss him now. Such a pro. best math teacher in my life. recommended to anyone and everyone.
This professor is the best math teacher I have ever had. He is clear and can explain things in so many different ways it would be impossible to not understand. He will take time to help students, although it may not always be during class time. He does not make things to easy but this is from a calc 2 perspective so it should not be to easy.
Best math teacher I have ever had. He could teach an ant to do calculus. I would build my schedule around this professor. He is not the easiest professor but he has so many ways of explaining topics it would be almost impossible to not understand. He is also very energetic and clearly loves his subject.
The man is a genius. I am currently going through depression because I will not be able to have him for differential equations.
EXTREMELY SMART. I took his course as my first college math course and it was rough. He is so smart, it almost seems unorganized and not planned. He knows what is it talking about but I was not getting it. Most people love him. You must go to class. I love math but this was eh. Just couldnt handle his teaching style. He is nice to look at tho.
I have had Kilner calc 1-3 and he has changed my experience at MCC. He is absolutely brilliant, and I can guarantee any question you have will be answered and you will understand everything crystal clear. I too am crying through differential equations because he is not teaching it! Best professor I have ever had hands down.
We had Professor Kilner as a substitute for just one day and he explained more to us and made basic foundational concepts needed for everything than our regular professor has all semester. We were all stunned at just how easy he made what had seemed like difficult concepts. I wish I had taken him for pre-calc instead.
Great teacher! Took Intermediate Algebra during the summer. It was intense - 7:20am, four hours long, four days a week - but he is a good teacher and I got an A. Would definitely take another class with him.
Great Teacher and very organized.
Amazing professor!!! I am extremely sad I cannot take him for calc 2. He is always available to help during office hours on any problem you have. His passion for the subject makes math more interesting and easy to learn. If you want to get an A you should do the practice problems he assigns!
Best teacher ever!! I took calc 2, 3 and now linear with him. It was my second time taking calc 2 and i learned more with Kilner over summer than I had the other semester with Zwick. He is clear and helpful. There is no better math teacher at MCC. Optional HW. But not actually necessary because he is so clear in class.
Very smart guy. If you are someone that struggles with math and needs to see every step to understand what is happening this teacher is not for you. He seems annoyed when people don't understand and will not take the time to help you with your questions.
Kilner is a great teacher. If you pay attention in class, take notes, and ensure you can do the problems he goes over in class, you'll be able to ace the in class tests. He puts all the harder questions on take home tests or extra homeworks to hand in, so you have more time. Added bonus: Kilner is hands down the hottest teacher I've ever had.
This class was very challenging and the lack of helpfulness and profession given was awful! Online courses themselves aren't easy and having no help and not wanting to give it just made it worse. Professors need to start actually caring and putting forth an effort to want to help because I see it way too much in community colleges.
Kilner is the best math Teacher. He is helpful and will always be there for you in class and out of class. He makes himself available at all hours and teaches great. I don't need any math classes besides 150 and he makes you want to go and take another math. Overall Great Guy and amazing Teacher
Professor Kilner is great. He moves a bit quickly so if math isn't your strong suit you may want to avoid. However, I found his way of explaining things, and the way he teaches to be excellent.
Professor Kilner is incredible. Has a very clear way of explaining difficult calculus and a great sense of humor. Makes himself available for project, homework and test help. I hate math and he made me love and excel at it. MCC is lucky to have him. Non-required book HW but i did it all and it helped.
Prof. Kilner is very helpful and is a great teacher! Despite the material seeming to be complex, Prof. Kilner works with his students and simplifies the math down until a 5th grader could do it. However, the class does require students to do their 'optional' homework and watch short online videos or else they will have a more difficult time passin
Awesome professor very helpful and good at teaching the material!
Kilner is a plain whiteboard, marker and textbook kind of lad. He does a great job explaining a concept from its origin to break you from any habbits or barriers you may have learned in the past, he tends to talk alot but he cares.I wish he did more pre-planning w the syllabus and test dates, and gave more graded work to outweigh low test scores
Would be tough without prior knowledge of precalculus.
Great teacher that made calc 3 very straightforward. I have had him for two semesters now and I will do my best to take at least one more class with him. He's very helpful if you go to ask him a question after class or go to his office hours. I bought an earlier edition of the book because it was $100 cheaper and it worked just as well.
I had Prof. Kilner for both Linear Algebra and Discrete. I really enjoyed his classes. He is great at explaining things clearly and really helping you to understand all of the concepts. The work was at just the right difficulty level. He is a very nice and good-natured person. Highly recommended.
FANTASTIC TEACHER!!! def recommend.
Professor Kilner is easily the best professor at MCC. He is always willing to help and is extremely clear on what he expects you to know. If you struggle with math, or excel, Kilner will be able to get you through his class. Be sure to ask questions if you're having trouble. He keeps a steady pace through his classes and is a fair grader.
I hated math in high school and would consider myself a poor student at the time. The class wasn't easy, but it was clear, concise and good grades were achievable. I've gone on to become a practicing dentist, so Steve Kilner was a small part of my education, but because of him I always mention the quality education provided at MCC!
Professor Kilner is a great math professor. Genuinely wants you to do well in his class. Not an easy course by any means, but he does give extra credit. He has a good sense of humor and is just an all around good guy. We had a few hw assignments and a group project, 4 unit tests and a final. He's so good at what he does. Definitely recommend.
Awesome professor. Always helpful and will make even upper level calculus seem doable and approachable. Took him for Calc II last semester and I'm taking Differential Equations with him now.
This professor is extremely difficult to understand. He skip many steps during the problem and makes it confusing. Calculus is hard and is the first time many of us are exposing to the integral and derivative. So he needs to slow down and explain certain steps.
Kilner is one of the best professors MCC has to offer. He is direct and does not use cheap tricks to mislead you on exams. If you want to do well in his class, make sure you grind out the recommended homework outside of class. Reach out to him, he'll explain whatever you don't understand. He's passionate about math and is always ready to chat!
I took the honors version of this course and beware of the project. It was a LOT of work and very difficult. His tests are pretty straight forward and he explains things very clearly. Definitely one of the best math professors I've had. If you work hard and use his office hours as a resource you'll be sure to pass.
Professor Kilner is by far the best math teacher that I have ever had. His lectures are always clear and complete and he always put things into context to give his students a deeper understanding of the material. I used to email him a lot with homework question and other problems and he was always quick to respond. He cares about his students.
Professor Kilner is a reliably good professor for any math class. Calc 2 is a tough class in general, but he makes things simple and is always happy to explain things more in depth. He offers extra credit on your test average if you complete bonus activities. He will also drop your lowest exam grade and replace it with the final if you score higher
Best math teacher I ever had! He made this class very doable! If you don't understand something or need math advice, he is there to help! Take good notes, do the practice problems, & see him after class or during office hours if you need help. Had not taken math in 7-10 years & managed to do very well in this class.
He explains things very clearly and covers every detail. He is energetic, polite, answers questions, and has a passion for teaching math. Even first thing in the morning, he brings enthusiasm and energy unlike any math professor I have ever had. Strong recommendation, If you take him you will know the how - just memorize your formulas and practice
My favorite math teacher at MCC. No surprises on his tests and he lectures go through everything thourghly. He is also very accessible outside of class and is super at helping you when youre having trouble with homework. Would definitely recommend to a friend
Kilner is probably the best math professor I've ever had(took 3 classes with him). His lectures are clear and concise. There are no surprises on his tests and the graded homeworks are a nice challenge to help balance out your grade. He's even helped me with other math classes I've taken. He's really passionate about math and his students!
Kilner is the man. He could be teaching at Harvard but instead he's here to strap us with knowledge so smooth you won't even feel it enter your head. I didn't even like math until I took multivariable with him and now I'm doing it as a minor. Best professor at MCC ez.
Math doesn't come easy to me at all but Kilner taught in a way that really made sense. I'd recommend him to any friend who needed to take college algebra. Also adds random extra credit if he finds that the class needs it which is SUPER helpful. Great review sheets and no surprises on the test. Willing to thoroughly explain anything that you need
Kilner is phenomenal. I took Calc I, Calc II, and Linear Algebra with him, and did well in all three classes. He isn't vague about anything on the tests or homework, and is completely willing to help if you're confused at all. If you visit him in his office he's willing to explain things and then some. He knows his stuff and the lectures prove that
I go to UB and I took calc II over the summer with Kilner at MCC and he's the best professor I've had so far. He explains things really well and in detail. It's easy not to do the practice problems he gives you because he explains things in class so well but make sure you do them. Exams are straightforward he gives a lot of partial credit.
The professor clearly defines his expectations and grading criteria. Calc II has to be the hardest classes you can take, but Professor Kilner explains it clearly and is accessible and organised. For summer Calc II, I would recommend learning how the class is formatted as early as possible, and staying on task after; the pace is brutal- stay alive!
Took kilner for Stats 1, one of my favorite professors so far. He made the material easy to understand and kept the class engaged and down to earth. Highly recommend if you struggle in math.
I have taken Calculus II, Calculus III, and Differential Equations with Professor Kilner and all I can say is good things. His notes from class are as well written as the scripture but with more explanations and less interpretation. He is always more than happy to help during office hours and just an email away. Prof. Kilner is the Goat.
My favorite math teacher so far. Very knowledgeable and can answer pretty much any question you have constructively. He makes sure all the material gets covered and is a fair grader. Highly recommended
Prof Kilner is a great teacher who makes concepts very clear, and is open to questions if you arent getting it. He also provides helpful resources for reviewing material.
The professor is honestly does amazing at his job. However, the course is very difficult. You will need to pay attention to his lectures and take notes in order to pass. His lectures are clear and great. Practice, practice, and practice. There are a few extra credit opportunities. The final test replaces your lowest test score which is really neat.
Prof Kilner clearly cares about student's success. He gives helpful resources and explains concepts very effectively. Showing up to class is huge. The tests and assignments are not overly difficult but you will definitely struggle if you do not attend classes. He is a reasonable and knowledgeable teacher.
I am an engineering student at a different university and took Linear Algebra with Professor Kilner. Kilner is a better educator than any professor I've ever had at a 4-year university. I would 100% recommend taking a class with him. He has clear lectures and explanations and shows true passion for both math and teaching.
Mr. Kilner has valiantly handled the challenge of remote learning during Covid19! Adjusting has been tough for all involved and he's always on top of it and available to help. As an instructor he's very practical and his lectures make sense. Fair grader. He's also quite cool for a math teacher. Definitely recommend.
I took as many classes as I could with Prof Kilner. His lectures are comprehensive without feeling overwhelming. When answering questions in lecture or in office hours, he pays close attention to the conceptual source of your confusion and patiently works to help resolve it. He transitioned to online like a pro during COVID. He's the gold standard.
Kliner's lectures were great and you can tell that he cares about his students. He has a way of explaining math that just works. If you don't get it, he'll rephrase it in a different way so it will! Also make sure you take good notes that YOU understand. I essentially wrote down whatever he did on the board and it was nice to look back on for tests
Took Multivariable Calculus over the summer session with him and it was one of the best classes I've ever taken. I currently go to school at RIT and Mr. Kilner was the best math professor I've had thus far. Very understandable and will dive into detail about the theory behind each and every concept. Great experience all around.
Fantastic professor, he made Linear Algebra a cake walk compared to other professor's. He always cracked jokes with students and cared about how well they do. His lectures consist of many examples giving you a lot of resources to use when studying. He gives a lot of preparation for upcoming exams and quiz's to make sure your ready.
I've taken three classes with Prof Kilner (Calc 2 & 3, Linear Algebra) and I had good experiences with him. They were all online classes, so besides LA, the courses mainly consisted of assigned readings and a few problem videos. In LA he actually has recorded lectures. That said, he was always open to answering questions and helping you out.
Didn't do well in his class because of my own shortcomings, but definitely one of the best professors on campus. He will go above and beyond to make sure you're not falling behind and isn't afraid to make his policies explicit, for better or worse. Available outside of office hours if you reach out and plan in advance. Good spirit and energetic.
As someone who isn't particularly mathematically inclined Professor Kilner has been a breath of fresh air. I've had my fair share of poor math professors and Prof. Kilner is the farthest thing from that. You can tell he cares about what he teaches and for his students' success. I would definitely take him again.
He is a very harsh grader and rude as a person. I regret taking the course with this professor. Hope to get through the course as smoothly as possible.
I took his ten-week summer Calc 2 course. This is a tough course, but Dr. Kilner makes himself easily available on zoom & he is VERY helpful. Pearson is used for HW and textbook. It is CRUCIAL to read the text/do practice problems. I was doing math 6-7 hrs/day, 6 days/wk. BUT, if you do less than that, you can easily walk away with a B or C.
Difficult class, professor does a great job explaining the material.
Prof Kilner is one of the best math professors I have had in a while. He is quite a "chop buster" but it is all out of love, care, & fun. He makes sure everyone understands his lectures and gives good feedback. His lectures are super easy to understand, and you can def pass if you pay attention. Exams are super heavy, but easy as long as you study
Prof Kilner is very helpful and makes concepts clear. The course is challenging but manageable with dedication - 6-7 hours of study daily. Using Unstuck study alongside the textbook was a game-changer for me.
He seems to have a deep understanding of math but is not a good professor. He goes into far too many details without fully covering the basics. Expect in depth proofs on the first day of new material. He is also an extremely tough grader beware of tricky and obscure questions. His tests really try and mess you up and mistakes are graded harshly.
Professor Kilner is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. If you attend class and study as needed, you can easily succeed in this course. He provides study materials, and the assigned homework is similar to the tests.
Great teacher.
One of the most discouraging classes I've taken. Effort doesn't match results due to unrealistic expectations and outdated policies. Choose another section if you can.
Not worth the stress. Teaching style is cold, grading is unforgiving, and policies feel more like traps than guidelines. Other instructors provide a far better experience.
Funny enough, I figured from inside sources that this professor rate himself just to keep his rating higher🤣 I wouldn't even explain my experience here, but if you want to experience actual depression, take a class with him and then don't forget to come give your honest feedback here.
Cares about his own reputation and policies more than the student's situation. Regardless of how difficult the content may be, he expects everyone to learn it perfectly, even showing unnecessarily and confusingly extra work sometimes. If you have an alternative, go with someone else.
Not a bad communicator, but probably the worst when it comes to course structure and policies. No dropped exams, no calculators allowed, you're expected to memorize every prerequisite rule, identity, and function. The course is extremely text-heavy, and one mistake on an exam can tank your overall grade.
Test heavy and extremely harsh grader.
His class structure is a disaster.
Steven Kilner is the worst professor I have ever taken a class with. Take him on your own risk!
WHAT A JOKE! If you mess up one exam it brings your grade significantly down since there is not dropped exam policy and it' should be pretty apparent from the reviews in here that he has a test heavy class. Save your GPA, don't take it with this guy.
Very harsh grader. And confusing exams.
From the very 1st day, he will constantly be reminding you of has tricked, of course, policies and the way he has structured his class probably for the last couple of decades or so, he's just so full of himself.
It's pretty apprent from the reviews in here that he is a very tough grader.
the content is not easy but exams are not too difficult if you study well and do the work
If you love your life, DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HIM!!!
Terrible professor!
Kilner is by far the best math professor I've had in college. Guy really cares about the subject. Everything was explained super well and he was really understanding when I had to reschedule an exam. The type of professor that makes you love the subject to. I recommend him to anyone I know taking linear algebra, even non-mcc students.
