casual lecturing, not big on attendance, If u have 2 take poli sci 51 take him
Laid back. Gives Essays. Hippie. Knows his stuff.
On of the funniest teachers in SMC. An A is achievable if you just show up to class, take notes, and mildly study the notes.
I took this class over summer. It is sooo easy. I never read or studied and just paid attention in class and got a B. If you even mildly study, you will get a B or an A.
I Agree, he is a bit of a hippie. But a very, very, very, cool professor. Needs to drink water during his lectures because he can get short of breath.
I dropped his class only cuz i didnt want to do the term paper. He gives u 2 tests and a paper. The test is easy if u skim through the book and take detailed notes. Always says OK. Yeah he's the hippie type but cool guy.
I hardly showed up to class, and I got a B in the class. Take good lecture notes...skim through the book...study...and an A is definitely in your fate. Also, the Extra Credit paper gives you 10 points. Very cool and laidback teacher...I liked him a lot.
Absolutely brilliant man! Wants students to learn not stress! Good sense of humor, laid back. Does not test to torment! Interesting liberal views but is very gentle - respects all opinions. 3 multiple choice 50 questions tests, one extra credit paper.
he is the funniest profrssor in the SMC. 3 tests and 1 paper, but seems he doesn't check the paper. like his hair!!
Professor Kurving is so great. 3 M/C exam and one extra credit paper. exams are easy but take good notes and study them. He is funny and so helpful. I took this class over this spring and got B because I had other hard classes. RECOMENDED!
he is cool!!
great teacher and i know cuz i had him 2x. a bit of a hippie and real funny. ps 51- 2 mc test and a bs paper ps 1- 3 mc test and an ec worth 10 pts. u'll love his enthusiasism and he likes when you show up to his office hours
Really recommend him. Gives EC which eliminates stress. His tests are from notes. Covers everything in class. No need for books. Teaches u basics. Understands not everyone is pol sci major. Kinda weird, but nice once u get to know him. class ends earlier.
Awesome, funny teacher; gives good lectures; take good notes and study; no real need to read the book; tests are fairly easy and very straightforward; highly recommended class
cool professor, you'll learn but not stress out in his class, liberal but gentle on other views, i like him a lot, strongly recommend to take this course!
He is such of a freaking cool teacher! I loved his class and wish he taught more. Took it in summer, which was right amount of time and work. He's very clear and really knows his stuff.
He is very -clear- and -organized-, knows his material very well. Makes the class very easy and enjoyable. he never makes u feel dumb n is always there to help u. If u want to LEARN well N also ENJOY ur class --TAKE HIM-- A great person, a great teacher.
Dosent take attendence. Tests are easy. Really laidback.
i laughed the first time i saw him, he is a political junkie that knows everything concerning goverment and political issues. Style: he comes in, scribbles on the board and talks the whole lecture, BUT, the tests are pretty straightforward, its all in his lectures. i got an A easily.
Really wonderful! He gives clear, interesting lectures geared to truly help you understand the material. He stays on point. The subject entails the kind of reading that makes you have to read things at least twice but it is worth it! Best part is how he encourages students to talk to him any tim
Very cool, kind, although kind of meek. His appearancw ill remind you of an old school hippy/pol. activist but actually is very level headed and teaches in a straight forward manner. One of the best at SMC.
Prof. Kurvink is very approachable. He hangs around after class for students to talk to him about politics if anyone is interested. He pays attention to the important things and gives very clear lectures. He is really kind. I strongly recommend the class!
I would not consider it an Easy class. The whole class consists of 150 points. 2 tests (midterm and final) worth 50 points each plus a term paper (6-8 pages). so if you **** up on one thing u are done in the class. The tests are alright mostly on the things he goes over in class, be careful!!!

take notes, notes, notes, make sure you take notes cause that's what he tests on. x-tra credit (10pts) poss. study the notes..can't emphasize that anymore...take notes and study them. his tests are easy if you study the notes.
Do not take Pol 51 unless u have to. It is not an easy class unlike Pol 1. The teacher is nice. He does not grade easy. 2 mpc tests and a paper. Good thing is not much work, bad is that tests are extremely hard to get an A on. Studied maybe total of 2.5 hrs entire semester, got a B cause of the test

Great teacher! really chills, and the tests are pretty easy if you pay attention to his lectures and read the textbook accordingly. I've taking him twice, and you won't be sorry you did.
Great teacher, great class. I'm interrested in philosophy, and Kurvink's lectures made the class worth it. The book is difficult to read, but he goes through all the material you need to know in his lectures. Be prepared to do a lot of reading in this class and think critically about the paper
took class in winter 2005, knew nothing about the subject and the class was way too easy!i finished every exam in under half an hour. all you have to do is read the textbook and study the class notes. i got an A. he's approachable and explains everything well!
easiest class i had ever taken, take during winter/summer, no paper, just 3 tests and extra credit, no final. GREAT teacher, funny guy though, i think he's a hippie. You'll love his names for everyone!
HARD class not as i thought he was...take him but he's old and gruchy take someone like schultz youll be better off with her
Great Teacher - Really, one of the BEST. Made me change my major. Very funny and easy to understand. Three exams, no papers, just one for extra credit. Great for a short semester.
3 exams and one extra credit. Exams are 50 question multiple choice. Make very good notes and pay attention on class, read the book. Nice guy, approachable and helpful.
TAKE HIM! I loved his class. Made it easy to understand. Study your notes and read the book and you will do fine. I miss him in Poli.1:( He is the best teacher in SMC. I used to be red now I am blue and loving it:) Thank you professor K. sc
When I say this professor is good I mean it. 3 straightforward multiple choice tests, one extra credit paper. No group work, no in- class work. Tests not cumulative. All you have to do is sit down, take notes, skim chapters. Very chill class. The professor is very nice, down to earth, never intimidating, is gentle. Best class I ever took.
best teacher i have ever taken at SMC. best to take class during winter/summer. no papers, no final, just 4 tests and extra credit. he's a funny pot smoking hippie. tests are off the notes - no book needed. talk A LOT, but its worthe the A u get after only 6 weeks!
Kurvink is the man! This is the most chill, easy teacher at SMC. If you pay attention at all, you can easily get an A. I wish all my professors were hippies like Kurvink. I wanted to get this guy blunted after the semester was over.
he's amazing: open-minded. passionate. liberal. tolerant. kind. objective. an ideal teacher. an open book. a great guy.
I am a history major at UCLA. I graduated from SMC with 3.9 GPA. Kurivink was the most difficult teacher in the social science department. Never take this class unless you really have to! I find my UCLA upper division classes much easier than his!
I have no idea what previous person talking about. Stay in UCLA. Who care about your 3.9 GPA. This professor is great. All you have to do is sit down and learn, make sure take a lot of notes, skim chapters. Very chill class. The professor is very nice, down to earth, never intimidating, is gentle. Best class I ever took in SMC. Thanks professor.
Such a easy class, all u have to do is take notes and review the study guide. Very friendly, funny and overall a great professor.
Easy if you use the study guide and take notes. The terms in the study guide appear in order in the book. You can skim throught the book briefly and be prepared for the test. He has good lectures that have a climax and ending. Hes kind of a hippie and fun
Great teacher for pol sci. actually teaches and has easy exams. his lectures are very easy to follow and exam questions appear the same way he writes things on the board or says things. take good notes, follow the study guide and you can do awesome.
Should take very good notes. I am a non-native student; it is very hard to write down what he said. Should read the book, but the textbook is hard to understand. I spent a lot of time reading the book, but not helpful. It is also not easy to get a good grade for his term paper, which is 33/100 for your final grade. Not easy for international studen
If you show up for class and take notes, you should get an A. I barely even read the book. Easier than most instructors because he focuses on the basics. I had no interest in this course whatsoever and he made it bearable maybe even a little fun.
go to class and take notes. great teacher.
Awesome teacher! He made political science fun and interesting. To do well in his class you need to take good notes and read the text book. A++++ professor!
nice guy
If you've never taken Poli Sci or Phil, avoid this class! Otherwise you'll be completely lost, especially on the term paper which is worth 1/3 of your grade. It also seemed unfair that Kurvink took so long in giving us handouts that we needed for the paper. He is pretty funny in class but take at your own risk.
although he seems pretty easy for native speaker, he's not easy for international students...he has a sense of humor, but unluckily i don't really understand his lecture.. eventhough i study, i still get bad score..
liked him, take good notes. sometimes when he is talking, it may not seem important, but it will show up on the test. 1st test git a c, i took better notes and got an b on next one. make a good effort on the paper, don't wait until week its due. lectures are a little unorganized though
He is easy if you decide to take the class seriously, read the book in detail and take good notes. I got 2 high B, 1 A and got an A in the class. There are no hw and only 3 exams including the final.
If you expect to get an A in Kurvink's class, then get ready to work for it. You should do all of the readings and take good lecture notes. He gives two multiple choice exams, and one term paper. While the exams aren't really too difficult, the term paper requires at least 20 hours of prep time. Luckily Kurvink is available to help you if necessary
The best professor. the only class that you really learn.I loved it and I worked hard in that class.Kurvink you rock.
Great professor. I'm not sure whether it was because it was during the summer but this class seemed really easy. All you've got to do is read the book. The questions on his exams are pretty obvious most of the time and he's very leniant with the essay questions. Highly recommended.
Great Teacher! Very knowledgeable, interesting lectures, trustworthy, fair grading, balanced approach to all issues, clear expectations for homework and tests and an all around heck of a nice guy!
Prof Kurvink was really cool.........took his class at night and the lectures didnt drag on....2 tests and 1 mid-term.......spaced so that you can do your best......i got an A so dont see why u can
He's a very good teacher but it's not as easy as everyone says he is.You really have to study especially if you're bad at philosophy as i am.
if you have no idea about phil and you can take notes and read you should get an A. if you have some phil knowledge and know who some of the basic guys are(hobbes, locke etc..) you should get an A. 2 test (they are super easy) one midterm EASYYY. He will also teach you a few things, believe me take him.
Seriously this is the best political science teacher ever. No homework, 3 exams, and 10 extra credit points if answer or ask a question, or you make a comment. I bought the text book, cracked it open maybe twice for like 10 minutes, and got A's on the exams. Not only is it a very easy A, but I learned a lot. He really kept my interest. Take him!
It took a while to get used to his style off teaching, but in the end I graded him an A+ professor. U should take your own lecture notes, his r limited. Ez tests(not tricky at all), dosent take role, and 10 points xtra credit for asking questions. He knows and loves politics, he's great! Totally recommend! :)
has a funny voice and makes stupid jokes but is a GREAT guy. amazing class, he is very helpful and nice. take him!
Fairly easy to get an A. Just come to lectures, take good notes, read the book and you will do well. Multiple choice easy tests with free points that Prof. Kurvink puts on tests. I had fun in the class.
I loved his class! No confusing at all. Before I took this class, I just liked philosophy. But now I just love it! Thanks Dr.Kurvink!
The tests are too difficult. Mention absolutely every detail he mentioned or you fail. All in-class, no extra credit, no take home. He discourages! class discussion which is sad considering that the topics covered can be very polarizing.
Don't take him, his tests turned out to be really hard and in parts unrelated to class topics. His lectures are boring and filled with too much information to keep up. No class discussion. Im a philosophy major and I got B-A-B on my tests... He's the worst philosophy teacher I've ever had.
This guy is definitely a good teacher. He has a dry humor only intelligent people will understand. If you participate and let him know you do, you are guaranteed a good grade. He makes a potentially boring subject interesting. If you do not manage to complete the reading, you get all you are meant to get from the reading in class by his lectures.
This has to be the worst teacher at SMC. Dont take this guy, he lost his mind, after all he looks like he is 200 and just escaped his psychiatric facility and all he manages his hours of a torture of a monologue, whipping you into hell with a bad grade if you don't recite his every word in a context that only he fully understands.
Bad teacher. Grades bad if you have an opinion that differs from his. Attendance mandatory and being 5 minutes late earns you a nasty look and a downgrade on participation. Avoid him like the plague.
Cool prof!Took class over the winter, got A.He is very laid back, the material was VERY interesting. He doesn't pick on you for differences in opinion at all, just construct an intelligent argument. You are in college, you know. Reading is expected, because you are in school, you know-to actually LEARN SOMETHING..3 EASY tests. The class was fun.
Ignore the negative comments. This was my 3rd class with Prof. Kurvink. They are easy if you read the assigned material, participate (gives 10 extra points for that)and take very good notes.2 essay exams and a paper to cover personal political philosophy-pretty easy. People that came to learn did very well in his classes. He is not there to fail u.
Cool Teacher. He's funny and gives good lectures. The class i took, Political Science 1, was lecture based and included required reading that the test was based on. The overall grade was based on three things and they all happened to be tests. So its possilbe to dig yourself a pretty deep hole if you mess up on a test. I still enjoyed the class.
Understandble and approachable teacher who cares for what you have to say.
I'm no poli sci major by all means, but he managed to keep me engaged by deliverng crafty, humurous lectures that actually made me take a slight interest in poli sci stuff. i actually bought a Freud book, that i wouldn't have bought otherwise. Fair grader, take good notes as they were all i used for exams. Chill class, but work is for sure needed.
This class is boring and repetitive. He discourages class discussions of any of the topics. I got an A on all three essays which is almost the entire grade, all he wants to see is his own lectures spewed back to him with some outline. I didn't do any of the reading, I just studied my notes and got by without trouble. I very much regret taking him.
I am not a Poli Sci major and had fun learning in his class. The information that he gives is just what you need to know. Attendance is not mandatory, but 90% of questions of the tests are based on his lectures, so be sure to take or copy notes. Easy A if you read them and do well on 3 tests.
Great teacher, you don't even have to read the book, just listen to him and take good notes and the exams will be easy.
Definitely one of the BEST teachers I've had. Make sure to make comments or ask questions in class for extra credit and take good notes!!!
Great professor! Clear and interesting lectures. Gives study guides and uses everything he writes on the board for the exams. I strongly recommend him!
Love this professor! His lectures are interesting and entertaining. He's gets all excited talking about current issues, it's great. The tests are okay. A good combination of both lecture and text book.
He's okay. You do have to pay attention in class and read if you want to do good in the class. The class is out of 160 points and 10 of those points are participation points, which sucks if you're a shy person. Only 3 essays and that's it.
Great Chap! One of the best Professors at SMC. Very Intelligent, but very modest and humble. He will help you if you dont understand and will not put you down if you have a different view point. 3 easy ScanTron tests+1 paper on your political views. Attendance is complusory, but you wouldnt want to miss a class anyways! Great teacher, always happy!
Intelligent, funny, and knowledgeable. He makes political science very interesting. I recommend him if you need to take PS1. Pay attention in class, take notes, and just enjoy the class. You'll regret not taking him!
Kurvink is great! I recommend him. He's clear, helpful, and does not go against others views. His scantron exams are very fair; go to class and take notes, and the book helps if you miss something he said in class.
Good guy, Interesting class. Great class discussions. Like his analysis. Essay tests and a term paper. Not a lot of work, modest amount of reading. Very enjoyable. Got an A.
The guys a genius, yet very humble and helpful. He will teach you, not only the knowledge, but how to think! Three essay tests are easy. Very clear in class, and very helpful in and out of the classroom. He encourages healthy debate in class, and will never 'put you down' for your view, despite his left-wing leanings. Great class, Great teacher!
Professor Kurvink is extremely intelligent and does encourage class participation. You will receive extra credit points if you participate in the class discussions. I personally find Political Philosophy a hard subject, but he is very accessible and helped me to pass the class with a C. He is a great guy and extremely funny. I have respect for him.
He is awesome. He only lectures but he is funny and very clear. He doesn't ask for much but you learn a lot! take his class.
6WK WINTER 2013 POLSC1: Kurvink is a cool dude. From day one he's very up-front with how his class operates, what to expect, & welcomes crashers. 3 exams, multi-choice, match, T or F, 50pts each, 10pt x-cred avail. I didn't buy book, on reserve, only read for days I missed. He's funny, chill, just pay attn in class you should get an A. Thx Kurvink!
Most students get either A or B. Very discussion-oriented class. His hand-writing was not readable. The class notes were not clean or organized, combined with his handwriting. This might make this class difficult since the textbook is filled with literature; it was not textbook style.
I honestly think that Kurvink is one of the best INSTRUCTORS at SMC. What I mean by that is the man can actually teach extremely well, to the point that topics which I read that initially bored the daylights out of me became very clear and super interesting after his explanations. Also, it's not so difficult if you listen well and take good notes.
Kurvink is a great professor, he really knows his stuff. Lectures are really interesting. Take good notes. He's a funny guy who will help you get a good grade. Email responses are super fast. 2 in class essays, gives study guides, and one paper based on personal philosophy. Almost everyone gets an A on the paper which helps a lot. Very awesome dude
Kurvink is really great. Study for his tests a bit and show up to class and you'll get a good grade. He's a funny guy and he knows his stuff. Definitely recommend him!
Incredibly intelligent. Thought Provoking. I had zero interest or knowledge in poll sic until I took his class.
Teaches very well and tests are easy
Informative, thought-provoking, passionate. I am no person of politics or history, but this was manageable. Got A's on two tests so far. Haven't received the grade for third one. You should be a good note taker. Don't miss a class. In-class essays are tests. You will depend on notes for that. Prepare at home before. I searched internet than text.
Professor Kurvink is one of the most interesting lecturers I've had the pleasure of experiencing. He's an old-school liberal who cares passionately about his subject. Class participation is encouraged, but not required. He's a fair grader; you work for it, you'll get an A. Grade was based off three in-class essays about the theories covered.
Great Guy Great professor. Overall must take. Steve-O is a charmer
Steven Kurvink is very kind and clear on the material. I had learned more about politics and political thought this semester than had in my entire life. Princeton Readings in Political Thought is a great approach to understand how government began in America. I sure recommend the book, and the professor to all students... Sincerely, Liliana Prina
Prof. Kurvink is a really nice person who is very well educated in Political Science. The class is not difficult if you have taken American Government or American History in high school. It expands on many of the ideas most people already know about (like "checks and balances"). The tests are easy so if you study you can get an A without any issue.
Kurvink's lectures can be a bit disorganized; he expects you to take notes based on what he says rather than what he writes down. And he goes pretty fast, almost all of our class sessions were ended early (though it's like a three hour session). However, he gives you plenty of study guides, and his exams are straightforward, no surprises.
Dr. Kurvink is a really great professor. Every week he sends a lot of helpful reading guides to get you to prepare for both the class lecture and the test. He also really cares about his students and wants to see us do well. I highly recommend him!! He really is an amazing professor.
Steve is a magnificent professor. His lectures are very interesting and he is always there for you. I highly reccomend him if you want to learn a lot about the philosophical aspect of Poli Sci. He is very humorous as well.
Dr. Kurvink is one of those special professors that cares about his students. I took the summer course, and the lectures were clear and concise. He took role almost every time, but I think your grade is not dependent on it. Three tests and the lowest score was dropped. No hw and pop quizzes. Each test had a study guide that reflected the test
Really enjoyed this professor's lectures. You learn a lot too.
Definitely recommend Professor Kurvink! By far best pol sci professor! Really enjoyed his lectures. You will learn a lot through his explicit information throughout his lectures. Write down everything he writes on the board and take good notes from your book and your set.
Good teacher, there were only 2 exams and 1 paper the whole semester. Easy A if you do the reading and show up to class. Good guy, funny, interesting and cares about his students. Lectures can get a little boring, but because there are so few assignments the whole semester, it is easy to catch up and do work independently of the lectures.
okay! take him easy A/B !
He is incredibly knowledgeable and caring. Teaches in an unbiased way. He's up front about his personal views, but does not try to push them onto students at all (unlike other professors who try to indoctrinate students). As someone with unpopular political views at this school, I REALLY appreciate this. Will take again.
First college prof I ever had. Super interesting lectures (take notes!). Shares his political views but respects others. Dense reading, but make sure you do it. Encourages and answers questions. Class discussions occur during lecture, and debates are welcome. Focuses course on his PoliSci background. He was great to take during the primary campaign
classic guy, makes success easy, learned a lot
Awesome. He's a great professor.
Professor Kurvink is an AMAZING asset to SMC. He kept my attention throughout class and made me want to show up to listen to his lectures. I couldn't have thought of a better instructor to educate me on the political process during our elections. I would love to take another of his Poli Sci classes! The most laid back person you would ever meet.
Midterm and final; both essay questions. 1 big paper for the term. Pay attention and take notes for the exams, put some heart into your paper and you will at least come out with a B. + He provides plenty of reading/study/paper guides; won't be lost. Participation isn't mandatory, doesn't call you out on stuff; introvert heaven.
Grade is out of midterm, final, one paper on your political philosophy, and a 10 points of participation. Didn't do much the reading, he explains everything in class. If you miss a lecture make sure to read though. Tests are two essay questions based on the lectures. Can be hard to get an A bc the grade is based on 3 things, but it's not too hard
Easy class; just show up and take good notes. Going over the readings is pointless as he will go over everything you need to know in class. The only real homework given is the typed essay due by the end of the semester. The tests consist of several essay questions in which you choose one or two to respond to. Very straightforward.
Took the winter class, had 3 non cumulative exams. Teacher is cool, funny, and made learning interesting. He makes an outline on the board and goes over those topics. Take good notes and you can read the text for better understanding or to prepare for the lecture but not necessary. it did help me personally. Test are MC and True False. Easy A!
Great professor and great class discussions. The subject itself is very interesting. Although it's a lot to be covered and grade is dependent on 3 exams and the readings you do (which should be 4-5 with each exam, he goes over the readings in class though). Had to drop the class but would definitely take again if my schedule wasn't as full.
Professor is very boring. Material is reviewed in class but you can just read the book and be just as informed. There are a couple of test and 1 paper. Aside from that, he doesn't offer any EC so just do good on the tests.
Great professor! I recommend :)
A sanctuary for introversive musings & absent-mindedness (although no sleeping/snickering at memes to oneself), nonetheless it's essential to pay attention to the lectures, for most of the answers on all 3 tests will be revealed. Prof Kurvink is a pleasantly straightforward & humorously helpful soul. Highly recommended & liberal-indoctrination-free
Really great professor! Lectures are all interesting, informative, and funny. Read the textbook, take notes both in class and while reading, and take advantage of the reading guides and study guides and you will give yourself a good chance to do really well.
Took for summer* 3 MC exams, 50 qs each, no cumulative final! Great professor. Lectures are long but very interesting, make sure to read book and take great notes in class. He has a great sense of humor ! Exams are pretty easy but only if you actually prepare by studying the book and class notes. Also provides a helpful study guide. Take !
Amazing class. He is the type of professor you find at elite colleges, so we're lucky to have him at SMC. His ability to present material in a clear, captivating, nonpartisan way is outstanding. In both classes I took from him, I mentioned my support for Trump on the final papers, and got A's on both. Doesn't discriminate against conservatives.
Professor Kurvink is the most brilliant educator Ive had! He is extremely lecture heavy, but gets to the point quickly and clearly which doesnt keep you in class for 3 full hours. No homework other than reading. 3 midterms so your final grade is heavily test weighted. He is always available via email with quick responses,
Professor Kurvink is wonderful and has a lot of real-world experience. He's a wizened Vietnam War era hippy; he used to participate in rallies and demonstrations. His lectures are worthwhile; a relaxing and fascinating end to the day. You'll read from a few different philosophers as homework and he'll really help you understand them during class.
Although his lectures can get boring and heavy, they were usually very interesting. I enjoyed taking this course. Kurvink knows what he is talking about, he is passionate and open to different ideas than his. Just do the readings and participate in class, and you will easily get an A in his exams.
Kurvink knows politics. The lectures are long but he treats the class well. He's one of those guys that just "get's it". No surprises, what he says is what he does in terms of tests and grading. Great professor, also teaches at University level. Take his class you won't regret it.
Kurvink is a chill professor whose patience for nonsequiturs from unserious students is unmatched. He's also a very tolerant guy who actually appreciates dissent from his own liberal views. Not sure exactly why (maybe because he's mentioned that he was a hippie back in the day), but the guy reminds me of John Lennon.
Very informative class, he makes it so easy, I regret doing P/NP probably would've gotten A.
I'm very interested in politics but oh my god was this class incredibly boring.
Kurvink is one of a kind. An eccentric professor, the man is passionate about politics. I took political science 1 over the summer and it wasnt too hard. Showed up to all but one class and got an A. You do need to take great notes and study them carefully for the A, as he is very lecture heavy. Id definitely recommend taking him. Nice, funny guy.
He is eccentric and awkward in a way but at the same time funny and nice! I really liked him. Just take good notes be present study a bit and write a nice paper and you'll most likely get an A. It was an enjoyable, interesting class.
Professor Kurvink is an amazing professor with an objective way of teaching. It's hard to be unbiased when lecturing about philosophy, but he performs the art exceptionally. If you want to study a variety of philosophical and political beliefs, take his wonderful class! He also has you write a paper about your own philosophy, which was really fun!
kurvink is great. a witty hippie who ALWAYS gives both sides and doesn't show any biases. take him! it's the easiest class ever and you actually learn a lot in the most simplified way. 3 tests, no final and one easy paper based on personal opinion. extra credit for participation but make sure you remind him of it via email! or wont get the credit
This is a relatively easy class, although his lectures tend to get boring. When talking about certain topics, he gives his opinion and an opinion opposite from his view. He gives 3 exams (no final), 1 short personal opinion paper, and also gives extra credit for participation (you just have to remind him through email).
I took PoliSci1 over the Summer 2019 with Professor Kurvink. His lectures will always interesting I learned a lot. If you do the readings before hand you wont get lost when he does the lectures. I would definitely take this class again.
Professor Kurvink is the best professor I have ever had!! He made the concepts so easy to understand. Take good notes during the lectures and do the readings and you will easily receive an A. Is very understanding and takes take to explain every concept.
He's so good I took his class twice!
Kurvink's lectures are interesting so you won't get bored. Just show up and take notes, you dont need the textbook at all. Make sure you study for every test bc those are what determine your grade. No homework except for one two page paper
very entertaining and funny professor. somehow he made pol-sci very interesting and entertaining, moderate reading, i took his class in the winter and did very well even though it was very fast paced, i highly recommend his class.
Prof. Kurvink is a very sweet guy! A true hippy who spent his youth in the 60's :) He is a democrat but does not have any bias while teaching the material. You have to be good at taking tests to get an A since there is not much else he assigns. Don't be shy to talk to him after class or during office hours, he is understanding and caring.
Professor Kurvink is the most amazing professor that I had at SMC. He is easily approachable and eager to go into detail about subjects. He lectures like he is talking to you, not at you so you stay intrigued. Unfortunately because of the pandemic, I had most of his classes online but, he sent detailed and helpful lectures. He is a gem!!
Professor Kurvink, is very understanding, and offers so much help if needed. He gives feedback on essays, and how to improve if you ask! I would advise you to take his class, you wont regret it! Be ready to take notes, and read the lectures & readings given. I would definitely take his class again!
His class is broken down into 3 essays and participation. He's a good lecturer in the sense where he breaks down complex philosophies into simpler concepts. He likes to use analogies and stories from his own life to make the class easier to understand and interesting. He's always actively looking for engagement and rewards you for it. Very wise.
Professor Kurvink, is such an understandable professor, and gives really good lectures. He gives really useful feedback from your essays if you ask, and that can help you on the following one! Remember to take a lot of notes, and read the readings& lectures that are given, because it helps in understanding the essay questions.
Prof Kurvink is a really great guy with lots of cool experiences that he adds to lectures. He has very lengthy lectures, but, as long as you go over the study guides and do all of the assigned reading (which is a good amount), you will pass. He was very accessible, flexible and understanding.
Took his class during Winter during COVID times and he made it so easy for students. He is an awesome teacher, who provides cool detailed lectures. He's also easy to reach. His class is easy as long as you read the textbook/lectures (It's heavy reading) There's 3 exams and a ton of extra credit! If you're trying to decide to take his class, do it!
Kurvink made the course easy and accessible during this winter. He is a great teacher who wants you to understand the material. The course consists of 3 exams and extra credit! Fair and open note exams. Use the resources he provides! Read the textbook and lectures (heavy), and you will get a good grade! You can find the textbook online for free.
this class is really easy and the workload is very small. I did not give him a 5 because he can be a little picky when giving full points on essays. I reviewed the material on the lectures and book and my scores on the essays were 48 out 50 or 49 out of 50. Be careful because there's not really much of a comeback because the extra credit is nothing
Only assignments were extra credit and they were all 4 sentence opinion questions! 3 tests, & you get to choose 2 of the 8 or so questions to answer. 2 pages for each, but he just wants to see u understand it. He wont grade based on grammar, references, etc. If a question is about the constitution, explain what it is, your opinion, & youre all set!
Professor Kurvink was a real gem! His lectures were super interesting, and he is unbiased in his teaching. Took his winter class which was graded on three take home exams which consist of essays, and gives lots of extra credit. One of the best professors in the SMC Political Science Department!!
Impossible not to like, so heartwarming, caring, patient, kind, and receptive. His passion for political philosophy is infectious, you can tell he truly loves and values what he teaches and teaching students. Never judges or discriminates based on differences in political beliefs. Very "old-fashioned" and "traditional" lecture style. Minimal hw.
Most of the course is lecture and taking notes to optimize the grade you get on the exams. He loves what he does and it made it very easy to sit through and hour and a half of lecture. Dont hesitate to take him!
currently taking his asynchronus class for spring and he is just a super chill guy. There are 4 writing assignments (which are honestly so easy if you just do your work) and the rest are little reading response and participation questions. Def take him!
Very easy course if you do the work. Simple homework assignments. Grade is mainly gained from essays.
Professor Kurvink was one of my favorites to date. Kind to his students, and leaves thoughtful feedback. He even sent us some music he likes to listen to from the periods we studied, which I thought was really nice. Most of your grade will be papers (50 points per paper, there are 3) and the rest of the assignments aren't above 3 points.
I've received over 100% in most of my classes especially in my writing classes. For some reason none of my essays received higher than a B in this class. Lectures are simply a couple pages of notes he provides and the book assigned. Class was confused most of the time on what Professor Kurvink wanted from us. Not impressed.
I took this class online amazing professor! Just be prepared to read a lot but the reading isn't much it helps you support your assignments. A total of 3 essays professor is a tough grader so make sure you provide many examples and evidence when writing your essays.
Professor Kurvink keeps the class engaging with his entertaining lectures. The workload is manageable, with a few exams and writing assignments. Using Unstuck AI alongside the textbook was a huge help for studying and acing the class. Definitely recommend this professor!
I took poli sci 1 and 2 with this professor and I will say professor kurvink has the easiest classes you will ever take. If you don't mind writing essays you will love this class as the majority of this class is essays. Easy class to ace and to have higher your GPA!! Only bad thing is he doesn't leave feedback on work and doesn't respond to emails.
Easy A but good luck if your actually plan to learn. No clear instructions my advice is to really go into detail and write a lot. No extra credit. Very random assessment schedule
I took his class for Political Science1 and I was pretty nervous at first because this isnt a topic Im the best at. His class is really helpful with not a whole lot of work to do. There is a textbook that he bases his assignments off of but he also has his own lecture notes. I actually learned a lot from this course, highly recommend!
I took Steve's online Polic Sci class scholars class! Its a very good and easy class, participation is every week, gives 3 essays! I would take again!
I love his POLSCI 52 class!!! he makes the most interesting lectures and I found them to be very knowledgeable. The only thing I need to say is to put effort in your papers and you will be good to go! Definitely would take his class again for POLSCI.
I took it online in was very easy, he is very chill
Great teacher, interesting class, fun topics. I was a few points away from an A and I emailed him about it, never heard back, but I saw that I ended with A on my transcript. Very thankful.
I loved how this class allowed me to think critically of our current political world while tying it back to philosophy. I gained such a love for philosophy taking this course. No complaints, take it!
Overall, a good professor; however, Professor Kurvink could provide more feedback. In this course, I was required to complete three essay papers and one short paper; however, I received no input indicating what I missed or what I could have done to improve my papers. If you're taking this course, then do not expect feedback on how to improve.
Overall, Professor Kurvink was pretty good. His participation assignments were super easy (worth 1-3 points each), and he also had three exam essay papers. My advice is to write A LOT. I noticed that he appreciates when the student goes way above the word count and grades a lot better. Additionally, go in DEPTH and explain your own perspective.
He was great at giving feedback and explaining his reasoning. I took this class over the winter and only wrote three papers, although it was a lot of writing, as I had to write two essays for each one. His written lectures and notes sometimes lacked information but they were useful for the essays.
I honesty enjoyed his class and it was very interesting. Also try to go into detail for all the assignments and provide examples as well, he usually likes when students do that. He's a great professor and easy A! Def recommend taking him if you're a pol sci major and need POLSCI51. Always complimented my work as well !! He's goated!!
