Mr.Lipman is not that hard. English is my second lauguage. I am taking his class now. He loves to help students and his website is very helpful.

Steve Lipman is an excellent professor and is an expert in speech and communications. I believe that most of the negative comments come from overly sensitive students, and students not willing to put in the effort to earn high marks. He offers positive, constructive criticism. Sure, his course is challenging, but you will learn to give a speech!

This is not an easy class for the student who wants to slide by but you will learn to become a better public speaker. He offers straightforward, constructive criticsm which proves very helpful. I recommend for the serious student. I am puzzled by some of the other comments, I never saw him disrespect a student in class.

Mr. Lipman does talk a lot, but most of it is classroom discussion. And if you can't handle that, then y r u in a comm class anyway? We had a cool class and everyone thought he was great. He's one of my favorite teachers.

He is a good teacher. I'm a shy person and i won't feel comfortable talking in front of the class. Mr.Lipman helped me alot and gave me a confidence to do good in my speeches. Take his class and work hard. You won't have any problem in this class. And e-mail him often, if you have a problem, he will help you.

I like him!I like him bc he challenges me.I also learn a lot from him.I have taken other comm teachers before,and he is the best,in my opinion.He explains,very well,how to write speeches and how to deliver them.the only thing is,like i said,he CHALLENGES you.if you want to learn,def take him.if you want an easy A,look elsewhere. and he's v.funny!

I really like this professor. He doesn't believe in coddling students. Why he should sugar-coat his criticism when he can give real constructive criticism that could really help? I've never heard him insult or belittle anyone. He's great! Funny and very helpful!

He taught very well. Don't take this class if you expect to get an easy A, because you have to earn your grade. If Take this class if you want to learn a lot. After each speech, he critiques the speaker, and then the class critiques the speaker, so that everyone learns what to do/what not to do for their next speech. He wants people to do well.

He is am amazing teacher, he absolutely loves each and every one of his students, all of the feedback he gives is very honest. Although it may seem harsh sometimes, it is really helpful and is actually not as scary as you might think. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Go to his office hours for extra help w/ speeches take his advice and get a good grade! =D GL!

An excellent professor. Don't expect a decent grade without putting in consistant effort and attendance. He was always available for any guidance and questions and was always helpful!

unfair and unjust...you can't miss ANY class, even you're SICK!!! He will drop your point any way... he just do whatever he want to do...He said"if you don't like mystyle, just drop my class." My classmate just miss two classes, because she was sick, even she had a doctor's proof, teacher still drop her anyway. don't take his class never!!!!!!!!!!!

He is a very fun teacher. i had difficulty at first but he is VERY willing to help via e-mail. as soon as you start asking for help, the class is smooth sailing... no need to buy the book he only uses it for test purposes.

Great teacher! Very helpful! If you stay after class and ask him questions he's always willing to help. Definately, not an easy class though. If you put in the effort you get the grade. If you're one to hear the truth and learn from it, then this is the class for you. He's a very passionate and extremely intelligent teacher. A+

He's a very good teacher. He might not be "nice," but come on! he's supposed to critique you, that's how you're going to improve. So if you want to learn, take him. The work load was more than i expected, but then again, i'm learning more than i expected to in this class

Great teacher. Everyone in our class had a good time and really improved their speaking skills during the semester. Any criticism Steve does give is constructive. Don?t let the comments of others, who probably didn?t attend class or put in much effort, prevent you from having an enjoyable learning experience with this great instructor.

He has a VERY good sense of humor! This REALLY helps to make the subject MUCH more interesting. Check him out sometime for Comm 12. You're in for a treat! :-)

Steve is an excellent educator. This is a SPEECH Class, so expect constructive criticism delivered fairly. If you don't want to put in the effort and learn, go somewhere else.

Mr. Lipman is a GREAT teacher. The class is demanding and he is Critical, but what do you expect it?s public speaking.I never had a problem speaking in front of people but he made the delivery so much better. I would definitely recommend him to everyone. Be prepared to work, but it?s worth it.

Very demanding, helpful in a sence that if you go asking for help he is there. Filling study guides doesn't necessarily mean your going to pass the quizes, or tests. The matterial is mostly in the book. The class is more like an advance publications class, and he does not know how to teach beginners.

Steve has a political agenda that he likes to teach in his classes. If you are not interested in learning about HIS views, then don't take his class. PS I thought this was a communication class not a politics class.

Best teacher @ MC. I find it funny that alot of people on here complain about the criticism...thats what a communications course is about (learning what you're doing wrong with speech and correcting it). And fyi, he gives CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM (tells you what was good & bad). He is funny, nice, and helpful. WORK HARD = A, SLACK = INCOMPLETE or F.

The Best teacher that i ever had in my whole life.

He is tough but if you do the work and come to class you will be rewarded.... do not expect this class to be easy because it is not... it is a demanding course and he made me a much better speaker than i ever thought i could be.. Props to STEVIE

If you plan to take his class, you need to know that this teacher is TOUGH he expects a lot out of his students. If your looking for an easy class find another speech teacher, if your looking to how to become a better speecher this is your teacher. He dose give 45 extra point if you do attend all the classes and if you just happen to miss a couple

"Mr. Steve" is probably one of the smarter professors I have had the pleasure of learning under. He's witty and clever, but don't mistake it for cockiness. You won't find another instructor who will give you extra credit for coming to class every day too. Don't cheat yourself. Come to every class and practice your speeches. He will reward you.

His expectations are higher than most and is especially critical to the content of a speech versus the actual presentation. Be prepared because he doesn't give make-ups, he grades tough and tests require some studying. If you want to learn, he's a great teacher. But if you want an easy speech class this probably isn't the right class.

You do not have to kiss his ass, but it won't kill you to be his friend, so yes, he does choose favorites. He's is very smart, he knows Public speaking front and back. You will learn what it takes to be a good public speaker. He's not a hard teacher, but he is he will challenge you. Very good teacher, I got a B.

The teacher is very knowledgeable about many topics.

He's a nice teacher but he expects too much from his student. I thought I got a B+ but he curved my grade and yes he does pick favorite. Over all I would recommend him to those who's serious in learning about public speaking bcuz you will learn alot from him, but if you wanna have an easy A, don't take his class :)

He is a very very very helpful, organized, and knowledgeable teacher. He's a hard grader so if you expect an easy class that you can skate by, don't take it. He's passionate about what he does and he's approachable for help. One of the best teachers I've ever had. You really learn a lot about public speaking. Excellent class.

Very knowledgable, funny and helpful. I had to work hard to get an A because he does expect a lot. Gives bonus for perfect attendance so SHOW UP and do all your assignments and you'll do fine. Very interesting class but alot harder than a basic public speaking class. Research required - weekly quiz - weekly homework + debates.

Really, the only positive to say about him is that he is willing to help on outlines. The biggest negatives of this class are the unreasonably, ridiculous high expectations of his debates. Unless you plan to make the Harvard debate team or want a very difficult class, save yourself and do not take him.

Prof Lipman is an amazing teacher. He really wants all his students to succeed and is willing to help anyone who reaches out to him. He grades fairly and consistently. Before taking this class, I was constantly told that he was a hard, unfair teacher. This is untrue. He is fair to ALL his students.

Slackers, DON'T take his class. Want to better yourself? TAKE HIS CLASS! I wanted to do the min. required going in, and I've learned so much! Interesting, helpful Lectures. Bit of a harsh grader, but it makes you work harder and get better & Ex. Cred. makes up for it. Very friendly/encouraging speaking environment. Excited to help if you ask him.

Comm 20 is pretty easy. Forget all the reviews that you have read this is the most recent review and don't base your judgement of the crappy ones that you read already. Comm 20 is a good communication class if you really are trying to take one. I recommend Steve Lipman

Knowledgeable teacher. Knows a lot about a lot of things. Very interesting discussions. Funny and cool. Hard Work Required, but it's easy to get help from him and that makes you want to put in more effort. You'll do better if you pay attention to the lectures and do the tests. Also, the course pack and office hours are your friends. Use them!

very helpful! if you pay attention in class, participate in class, read the book, you'll do fine! make sure you send him a draft of your outline to edit. He will criticize you a lot, even to the good speakers. But, you will improve your public speaking skills. Not that hard of a grader as long as you pay attention on how to make a good speech.

One of the best instructors I've ever had! Challenged me to open my mind and think critically. Steve Lipman changed my life in the best positive way. If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to take a class taught by him, I highly encourage you to do so. You won't be disappointed.

If you don't like to work, don't take his class. If you want to learn and become knowledgeable about the art of Argument & Debate from an informative professor then take Lipman. There is work to do, but if you do it and participate you'll get an A.

What's with the low ratings?? I had a blast and learned a lot. Steve is a great teacher--interesting lectures, always willing to help, etc. HOWEVER, you need to WORK if you expect to do well. Just follow directions, participate, and take advantage of the extra credit opportunities (there are plenty). You'll have fun and leave as a better speaker

he help me to built my personality by speaking, before i was very shield but i know i can stand up and speech without to be worry. He always answer the email anytime you send it and give you a feedback.

As long as you do the work, you will be okay. About 5 times you will have to go up to debate or speak. Don't be discouraged or afraid, he gives really good verbal feedback even if you feel that you did bad. He gives really good & interesting insights that make you think. He can be funny at times and is a lenient grader.

Always there in his office if you need extra help. He will try to nudge you to find your own faults and ways to improve rather than outright tell you if you ask him in person. Go ask for help, show that you try and he grades leniently. Pop quizzes are on lecture just a few days earlier, so memorize them. The book is not needed, save your money.

I didn't expect a lot to come out of the tests. I thought this class would mainly focus on speeches, but it didn't. I got A's and B's on all my speeches, even the major ones. However, I basically bombed and got C's D's on my finaltestspop quizzes. Managed with a D- at the end, so don't expect to get a good grade just based on your given speeches.

Fantastic teacher! He engages his students with speaking in front of the class immediately, which is a very good thing in my opinion. He makes everyone feel comfortable with his support and humor. He knows his stuff, he's very entertaining, and he obviously has a passion for what he teaches. I highly recommend Mr. Lipman and the COMM1 course!

Awesome professor! He is the most active professor I have ever worked with. He is thrilled to help student, but wants students to have the same drive. He works with all the students on a discussion level and by simply asking him what you could do better he know you were prepared and cares. He gives a ton of extra credit and is an easy A.

He makes you work for your grade, and to this day, his class is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. However, if you're prepared to put in time, your public speaking will significantly improve. I took him over summer session, and he also allowed a lot of time for discussion. He's tough, but he genuinely cares about his students!

One of the greatest professor I had in Mission. He is passionate in teaching. Very accessible outside of class. Don't get me wrong, there are homework and yes of course participation matters, but that is the point of the class... I hated public speaking, but because of this class, I am no longer afraid to speaking in front of an audience. A++++++++

Really wants you to get out of your comfort zone. He loves his job . This class allowed me to do overcome my fear of presentations! The Best!

I took Professor Lipman for honors Comm 1 and I'm taking him again for Comm 20. He is a great professor! He's very relateable and he really works with you as much as you need him to. I would say his classes are pretty easy A's, as long as you pay attention and put in effort. I'd defiantly recommend him!

Mr. Steve is the best! I learned so much in a short amount of time. I was so scared of speaking in public but I am now way more confident. (example: I did a speech last night and realized afterwards that I never got scared -- yippee) He really cares and gives you honest feedback that helps you grow. Don't listen to the others, just take him!

Great teacher and great class to take. However as a full time student it was very hard to balance his class with the rest of mine because his class requires a ton of work.

This class is definitely hard if you aren't able to keep up with all of the speech preparation and reading. Not an easy A. He makes you work for the grade, but also makes himself available to students often and gives good criticism. Will work with you to make your speech good.

Mr. Steve is a great teacher. He really cares for each and every student. But if you don't work hard he won't run after you. He is very funny, I love his lectures. There is so much you can learn from your peers and him. By the end of the semester, you build a strong bond with your classmates because of how much he encourages this. Go Mr. Steve! :)

He is the best teacher that I ever had! He is very well organized and you just need to follow up the steps. You have to work hard but you will learn a lot.

One of the best professor I ever had in years. Watch yourself turning into a butterfly from an ugly caterpillar. Amazing lectures that will captivate your attention. Gives plenty of his office time to consult. Responds to emails within hours. My self esteem is skyrocketing now. I have no fear to present myself or my ideas to the public .

Steve is so passionate and I think he hopes everyone else will be too. He assigns 5 debates/speeches 2 debate analysis's and a few other assignments. Steve has his own book he's written and is always willing to help. If you don't put in the work don't expect a good grade. I will say he's a little unorganized though and it can be frustrating.

Most of the reviewers are right, Lipman is a hard grader and professor. But that's for a good cause, he immensely turned me into a much better speaker. Sometimes I felt like giving up but if you stick through it, show up to class and actually put in effort then you'll get a good grade. Grading is mainly based on speeches, less on other assignments.

Professor Lipman has high standards for his students which at times can be frustrating but it honestly made me a better public speaker. My oral communication is way better than it was before I took his class. Attend class, participate, and put in the effort to improve and you shouldn't have any issues.

If you're comfortable with public speaking, pick Lipman. If you're not comfortable with public speaking, pick Lipman. Point is - where ever you start, you will come out of this class a way better speaker. He really cares about you as a student, so you have to be able to take his productive criticism and build upon yourself. Inspirational professor.

I have mixed emotions about Steve. At first I couldn't stand him bc I thought he was condescending, overly critical & hard to please. But towards the end of the course I realized why he was tough & picky about the topics. He challenges his students to the point of making them work hard for it. It does pay off & you become a better public speaker.

I took Lipman's class for the second time about a year and a half after taking it for the first time. This being said- Yes he's a hard grader and not a lenient guy. HOWEVER if you are a communication major, TAKE HIM. He is extremely knowledgeable in the subject and even provides a textbook that he wrote himself. Gives great feedback too.

Bottom line is that Lipman wants you to be a better speaker. He doesnt expect you to be perfect, he expects you to try and to improve along the way. Take into account the course materials (concepts build as you go) and feedback from the professor/class, and youll be fine. Public speaking really is a skill to work on for life. Mindset matters.

I did not like Steve Lipman at first. However, despite my initial feelings, he grows on you. It easy to do well in his class if you show up and try. Honestly, I think he likes the mistakes; perfection in his class is not something I saw him wanting. Follow his instructions. He gives very clear and fair grading guidelines.

I adored taking COMM 020 with Mr. Steve. He is a great professor, he compiles the readings and writes them himself so they're way shorter than reading from textbooks. There are quizzes every week on the readings and a debate. It's a challenging class and it requires a lot of preparation, but if you want to get out of your comfort zone, take it!!

Whether he's tough or not really depends on your view about COM classes. If you see little value in them, then you'll have a hard time in his class. COM20 depends A LOT on group- and pair work, so don't take if you can't be so committed. But if you're up to the challenge, then you'll learn a lot. Advice: Stay after class and listen/talk to him.

Many speeches but they help you improve public speaking, always attend class it helps, some people think he might be strict but he is very direct on his expectations, to earn good grades you need to put in work to, he needs to see effort, improvement and you taking time to ask him for feedback
